This summer NHA visited Camp Highroad, an outdoor adventure and retreat center, which gave us the opportunity to bond and get to know each other through a series of exciting obstacle challenges.
Mount Vernon was an amazing experience for all NHA students! We got to try our best to run the country in the Situation Room, and got to tour the home of the nation’s first President George Washington!

Montpelier
Montpelier was the home of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and one of the Founding Fathers.
“What impressed me was how interactive and engaging the whole experience was. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and made history come alive with interesting stories and facts.”

“We as Americans have become too out of touch with the way that the technologies we use every day work. Most of society would not function if it were not for computers of some sort, with computers being defined as electronic devices that can handle boolean operations, do basic arithmetic, and store data of some sort. We must be knowledgeable about technology because soon enough it will be our generation at the front of technological change. One of the goals of the National History Academy is to have an understanding of history from multiple points of view and be able to utilize the resources given.”

WEEK WEEK 2
“The past is never past, it is ALWAYS present”
Dennis E. Frye-
H a r p e r s F e r r y
“If I were to ask you to define America in one word and one word only, what would that word be? This is the exact question we (NHA) were asked when we visited Harpers Ferry by Dennis Frye, the Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The answers ranged from extremes such as division to liberty but there was no correct or incorrect answer. This really resonated with me because it gave us the ability to describe complicated things simply and truly hear each other. I think it is significant to go to historical sites because then it is not just words in a textbook but you see the landscape and you feel how the weather was which makes it all the more real. In this case, it would not have come so alive without our tour guide who guided us through this story, unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was as if we were there in that time as he spoke of this story as if he was there living with a fiery passion. It was truly moving.”

AAntietam ntietam
Garry Adelman had an extensive overview of the Battle of Antietam. He was an expert and explained in detail what happened on the day of September 17th, 1862. He led a small hike that explored the huge battlefield. In the blazing summer heat, Garry Adelman said the houses had been evacuated and no civilians were present. The white house on the hill, however, had bees present and in the battle, the troops were attacked by the bees, making it one of the scariest attacks. The barricades had fences covering them, and Adelman explained how the soldiers would come up and attack as well.

Tubing Antietam Creek
On July 8th, NHA was given the great experience to tube down the historic Antietam Creek. This experience was not only relaxing and a fun time with friends but also educational. We stopped at the Burnside Bridge which is a key landmark from the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War.

The students visited with Ron Maxwell, renowned director of Civil War films such as Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. His insights into historical filmmaking and storytelling captivated the students.

Gettysburg
Photos by Paola Perez
“During my time at the Academy, our trip to Gettysburg was a memorable experience. It was extremely moving to walk the revered grounds where a significant event in American history took place. I was able to feel the weight of history and gain a profound understanding of the sacrifices and decisions that have shaped our nation's trajectory by being in that location and standing at a significant location.” - Bryce Maddux
DOUG OWSLEY
Doug Owsley is an American anthropologist who is the head of Physical Anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. National History Academy was excited to have Mr. Owsley as a guest speaker. We had an engaging conversation about what particular conclusions anthropologists can draw from one’s bodily remains and what story they usually tell in terms of health conditions, habits, or even employment.

Historic Jamestowne!
With Mark Summers
Mark Summers, our guide, provided the NHA students with a unique perspective into the historical events that took place in Jamestown. He actively encouraged them to maintain a critical thinking mindset when interpreting historical events, and to remember that everything is nuanced and rarely ever a black and white situation!

Nats Vs. Reds
After an eventful day in Washington D.C. NHA attended a close and thrilling game between the Washington Nationals and the Cincinnati Reds. As the Nationals won, there was a spark of joy all across the stadium. For NHA, it was about more than just engaging in an exciting game of sports; it was about experiencing firsthand the cultural significance of baseball and its capacity to bring people from various walks of life together for a shared moment of happiness!!!

National Muesum of African American History and Culture
The NMAAHC is a huge museum full of African American music, art, sports, religion, and just overall culture. This museum goes in depth as to what African Americans went through during the Middle Passage, slavery, segregation, the Civil Rights Movement and so much more This museum was created in a way that makes it impossible not to explore the entire museum This experience is something that I personally will never forget

On the day of the monument walk the students walked on the edge of the Tidal Basin and were surprised by a downpour of rain The students of Fuller and Skrabanek’s classes waited out in the rain for their late bus It was all worth it because a bright rainbow greeted them in the end

When you have gone around D.C. you have most likely seen this man's name on a lot of buildings. He is a philanthropist who believes in funding museums for United States history to educate our youth. He is part of the reason that NHA could even exist.
Ernest Green
Ernest Green played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement. He and eight other high school students (the Little Rock Nine) were the first to integrate an all-white high school. Ernest Green was the first of the nine to graduate from that school. He came and spoke to us about his experiences, values, and feelings on segregation and how happy he is to know that African American kids around the world are getting the same opportunities as their white classmates.
Monticello
On July 24th, students attended a tour around Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello Students experienced a house tour and an in-depth tour along Mulberry Row, the center of Jefferson’s plantation activity. Additionally, NHA received a talk from Dr. Whitney Nell Stewart, an author and professor of UT Austin’s history program
UVA
With Hashim Davis!
The students of NHA visited the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, shortly after visiting his house. It was a fun experience and informative. Mr. Davis introduced us to the staff of the Office of African American Affairs at UVA. Mr.Davis was previously a teacher at NHA, making him a familiar face to TAs and Bill! We loved talking and asking Mr.Davis questions about college sports and community life.

Michie Tavern
The Michie Tavern was one of our last meals together at NHA. We made it last by enjoying our food that was provided to us by skilled cooks and servers. The ambience was roomy and warm filling us all with the friendly spirit. There was an abundance of fried chicken as seen below.

The Case Method by David Moss is a repeating “guest” at NHA. It is a book made up of 4 case studies (Madison, Lincoln, ERA, and Civil Rights). Every week, the students are assigned to read them. Teachers will have class discussions on it every classroom day, and at the end of the week, an allcamp discussion takes place.
Stuart Dorm
Stuart is a very supportive and welcoming space. Most of us socialize with each other in the common room where we watch movies, make snacks and most of all have many long conversations. In Stuart we were able to build friendships that will give us memories as we depart from NHA. We will all remember the memes sent by Ms. Fuller and the songs we would hear for wake up. The bed checks and always forgetting to check in and the dibs on a washer. Lastly, the elevator alarm goes off at the most random times. All these moments have brought us closer together.

The first day of Ms. Fuller's class was peculiar. Although it began awkwardly, as most teenagers are, soon we began discussing what exactly our class constitution should be. We made our own name cards, and soon, the awkwardness dissipated.
With time, we had incredibly complex debates, with lots of interesting discourse from everyone. We also made posters about significant figures. Our classes continued with the subject of our case and the discourse on the federal negative. The class holds severe discussions and conversations during debates as well.
For the case studies, students in Fuller's class split up into smaller groups, making it easier to work and dissect the cases from different perspectives. The study is also discussed as a class when the groups come back together to share what they have learned.
Despite all of the Fuller Shenanigans that take place, the class is a rambunctious, intelligent classroom, and we love it just the way it is.

WE STRIVE TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER, EVEN WHEN SOMEONE’S OPINION DOESN’T AGREE WITH OUR OWN. WE ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER TO SPEAK ON OUR OPINIONS.

We carefully discussed each case in Mr. Morrison’s class, and he tried his best to keep the class on topic. However, he related what they were learning about to real-life things and made on-topic jokes to keep them entertained. Mr.Morrison was an amazing teacher to have during National History Academy and I hope that other students get to experience him!!
