GALLERY
U N V E I LI N G M O D E R N S I N G A P O R E A N D SOU TH E A S T A S I A N A R T National Gallery Singapore is a leading visual arts institution overseeing the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Situated at the birthplace of modern Singapore, in the heart of the Civic District, the Gallery is housed in two national monuments—City Hall and former Supreme Court—that have been beautifully restored and transformed into this exciting 64,000-square-metre venue. Reflecting Singapore’s unique heritage and geographical location, the Gallery aims to be a progressive museum that creates dialogues between the art of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the world to foster and inspire a creative and inclusive society. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Dear friends, This year marks the 200th year since the founding of Singapore by the British, as well as our nation’s 54th birthday. To commemorate these historic milestones, the National Day Parade celebrations in August will return to the Padang, where the first National Day was celebrated in 1966. The Gallery’s majestic buildings, themselves an integral part of history, will serve as the backdrop for the festivities. Occasions such as these serve as a reminder of the Gallery’s role within wider society. As an art museum, our job is never to simply display masterpieces by remarkable artists. We believe that by sharing the stories behind the artworks, we can encourage our visitors to broaden their perspectives and consider connections between themselves and others. This will go a long way towards building a more empathetic and creative society. Our current special exhibition Awakenings: Art in Society in Asia 1960s–1990s exemplifies the impact of artists challenging the socio-political conventions of their time. It features art that sought to change society through artistic experimentation, amidst rapid modernisation and the rise of nationalism and social upheavals in Asia. Bringing together art and history, we will launch an immersive multimedia experience in August, City Hall: If Walls Could Talk, to tell the story of the City Hall since 1929 within its grandest room, the Chamber. Art in Singapore: 19th Century Imageries then gathers leading researchers in September to examine how Singapore was represented by travellers and settlers who were picturing a new life. Finally, our young museum goers can enjoy engaging and interacting with art too at our ongoing Gallery Children’s Biennale 2019: Embracing Wonder and refreshed Keppel Centre for Art Education. Join us in this journey as we progress towards a thoughtful, creative and inclusive society.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that the price of one fresh rose equalled that of one kilogram of rice in 1970s and 1980s Indonesia? This work critiques the wealth disparity in the country at the time. Siti Adiyati breaks the aesthetic conventions of what materials could be used to make art, interspersing artificial plastic roses amidst a pool of live water hyacinths. It was first shown in Jakarta in 1979 as part of the New Art Movement Indonesia exhibition, where she was the only artist to use living plants in her work.

CITY HALL: IF WALLS COULD TALK 11 Aug 2019–Aug 2021 | City Hall Wing, Level 3, City Hall Chamber City Hall, formerly known as Municipal Building, has had a long and colourful history since its completion in 1929. Originally constructed to house the Municipal Council, the building was later occupied by Japanese authorities during World War II, and subsequently post-independence government offices. Today, City Hall forms one wing of National Gallery Singapore. As part of the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration, this immersive multimedia experience celebrates the building’s rich history by combining art with stories inspired by key events that took place in the grand City Hall Chamber.

This exhibition investigates how experimental artists acted as catalysts for change during some of Asia’s most turbulent decades. It spotlights artistic responses to major global events such as the Cold War, and explores how artists challenged political, social and artistic conventions. Co-organised by National Gallery Singapore, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Japan Foundation Asia Center, Awakenings draws connections across Asia through over 150 artworks by important artists from China, India, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia.

Wu Guanzhong (1919–2010) is one of the most significant Chinese painters of the 20th century, renowned for his innovative fusion of Chinese ink with Western modernism. He is also known for his writings on art and creativity. This exhibition explores the relationship between his artistic and literary creations by bringing together major works from Singapore's National Collection and major Southeast Asian private collections.

LIM CHENG HOE: PAINTING SINGAPORE Until 25 Aug | City Hall Wing, Level 4 Gallery Lim Cheng Hoe (1912–1979) was the leading watercolour artist of his generation and co-founded the Singapore Watercolour Society. Largely self-taught, he studied painting under the then-art inspector of schools, Richard Walker, and honed his skills in the 1950s and 1970s by practicing and interacting with fellow artists during outdoor painting sessions. Beginning with the early days of his practice in the 1930s, this exhibition features over 60 artworks, sketches and archival materials that highlight Lim’s mastery of outdoor watercolour landscape painting.

OUTBOUND features a series of unique commissions that transform the Gallery’s spaces and key entrances into sites for reflection, meaningful encounters, curiosity and playfulness. Each commission will be displayed for at least three years, acting as an artistic landmark to guide visitors through otherwise ordinary spaces while highlighting the Gallery’s iconic architecture. This inaugural season features leading artists Gary Carsley (Australia), Jeremy Chu (Singapore), Jane Lee (Singapore), Maria Taniguchi (Philippines) and Yee I-Lann (Malaysia), among others.

NG TENG FONG ROOF GARDEN COMMISSION: CHARLES LIM YI YONG Until 27 Oct | City Hall Wing, Level 5, Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery
The third work in the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series is SEA STATE 9: proclamation garden by Charles Lim Yi Yong, Singapore’s representative at the 2015 Venice Biennale. The artist completely transforms the Gallery’s roof garden with plants found in reclaimed areas from Changi to Tuas and the Southern Islands, offering not only a greater biodiversity of flora but also an inquiry into Singapore’s history of land reclamation. These narratives will be generated through the plants, whose transplantation, adaptation to survive, and eventual disposal tell the stories of Singapore’s urban and coastal developments. SEA STATE 9: proclamation garden is a work in progress, evolving over the exhibition period as the plants grow.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS LAW OF THE LAND: HIGHLIGHTS OF SINGAPORE’S CONSTITUTIONAL DOCUMENTS Ongoing | Supreme Court Wing, Level 3, Chief Justice's Chamber & Office
Organised by the National Archives of Singapore (NAS) and the National Library Board (NLB), this exhibition explores the history of Singapore’s constitutional development from a British settlement in 1819 to its emergence as a sovereign republic in 1965. It presents a selection of 23 rare documents from the NAS and NLB's collections, each capturing a key moment in Singapore's legal history and journey to independence.

“Siapa Nama Kamu?” means “What is your name?” The inaugural exhibition of the DBS Singapore Gallery poses this question, inviting visitors to consider how art may relate to issues of self and community, and what it means to look at Singapore through its art. Siapa Nama Kamu? weaves together a rich and captivating narrative featuring artworks in a broadly chronological sequence, tracing Singapore’s art history from the 19th century to the present day. Drawing on almost 400 works, it explores the influences and practices that have shaped and transformed Singapore art. Liu Kang Gallery Located within the DBS Singapore Gallery, this space commemorates pioneer artist Liu Kang’s role in the development of modern art in Singapore. In 2003, Liu Kang (1911–2004) and his wife Chen Jen Pin (1913–2009) generously donated close to 1,000 paintings and works on paper to the National Collection, forming the largest donation of a single artist’s work to the Collection to date.

LONG–TERM EXHIBITIONS BETWEEN DECLARATIONS & DREAMS: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century Ongoing | Supreme Court Wing, Levels 3–5, UOB Southeast Asia Gallery Housed in the former Supreme Court building, the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery presents over 300 artworks that trace the shared artistic impulses across Southeast Asia since the mid-19th century. The exhibition navigates the art history of Southeast Asia as one that is characterised by a continuous engagement with global artistic concerns as the region’s artists negotiated the meaning of art and sought to reinvent vernacular traditions. Displayed in a largely chronological sequence, the exhibition is punctuated by key turning points in artistic sensibilities, demonstrating that art is inseparably linked to the region’s tumultuous social and political histories.

LISTENING TO ARCHITECTURE: THE GALLERY’S HISTORIES AND TRANSFORMATIONS Ongoing | City Hall Wing, Level 4, ArchiGallery
The architecture of the City Hall and former Supreme Court buildings may be imagined as an ongoing conversation between different generations across time. The inaugural exhibition at the ArchiGallery offers insights into the enduring histories and architectural designs of the two national monuments and their dramatic transformations into a home for Southeast Asian art. It also features never-before-seen artefacts excavated from the Gallery’s grounds, and a commissioned sonic artwork by artist Zai Tang that draws on the historical, social and spatial memories created in the buildings.

This exclusive tour offers a glimpse into restricted areas of the former Supreme Court, usually out of bounds to the public. Go behind-the-scenes and find out more about courtroom proceedings and the experience of persons on trial as you: • Traverse a network of hidden passageways • Climb through a trapdoor into a prisoner’s dock • Gain access to the Viewing Gallery where members of the public used to sit during court proceedings • Discover stories of some of the highest profile cases in Singapore’s history since 1939, tried in these very courtrooms Note: This tour is not suitable for children below the age of 13 and visitors with limited mobility due to steep and narrow stairs, high steps, and content related to violent crimes. GALLERY CHILDREN’S BIENNALE 2019: EMBRACING WONDER Gallery Children’s Biennale 2019 features 11 interactive works by esteemed Singaporean and Southeast Asian artists that activate the senses and reignite one’s curiosity. Expanding on the theme “Embracing Wonder,” this edition goes beyond imaginative play to unfold new layers of discovery through art. Inspired by a child’s unfettered imagination and ability to embrace all things new, the works articulate the power of acceptance, belonging and openness. A series of free programmes are also available for children and families this school holidays. Admission is free for Singaporeans and PRs. 24

While modernism was once seen exclusively through a Western-centric lens, it is now widely accepted that there are multiple modernisms which operate in diverse historical contexts. Art historian Reiko Tomii focuses on collectivism in late 19th-century Japan in this talk. This local development of modernity continues to shape not only avant-garde and contemporary practices but the entire institutionalisation of modern art in the country.

Deocampo’s narration offers an insight into the struggle of queer and other marginalised communities during the events. It includes an intimate portrait of his friend Oliver, who is the subject of an earlier documentary film by Deocampo featured in the Awakenings exhibition. 26

Founder of the 1970s avant-garde art group Space and Time, Lee's seminal performances redefined the relationship between the body and the space it occupies during a time when both were being heavily regulated.

Their collaborative approaches resonated with film communities and inspired them to challenge their medium in radical ways. This programme presents film works that created cinematic spaces to embody the struggles of city dwellers in the charged sociopolitical environment of the past.

Launched in May 2019, the Keppel Centre is a dynamic space where art inspires new ways of learning. Visitors can explore immersive and interactive spaces that encourage imagination, creativity and self-led exploration.
