WHAT IS COLLEGE TRACK?

Today in the United States, only one in five students from low-income communities who enroll in college earn their degree. Unprecedented income inequality and social injustice stack the odds against students from underserved communities. At College Track, we believe a four-year college degree is the key to unlocking the potential in every student.

We make a ten-year promise to the students we serve, from ninth grade through college graduation. They receive academic, social-emotional, and financial support to reach their goals. The results are clear—College Track students graduate college at a rate that is more than double that of their low-income and first-generation peers.

Dear Friends, Over the last year, our students and alumni gave us reason to be audaciously optimistic in the face of growing adversity. Political forces conspired to divide us rather than unite us. The promise of the American Dream seemed to slip even faster through the fingers of underserved communities, particularly for our undocumented students.

From an economic standpoint, millennials may be the first generation in American history to be worse off than their parents. The cost of in-state tuition at public universities has grown 237 percent over the last 20 years, while the income inequality in the U.S. has intensified, leaving us in the bottom third of countries worldwide for income equality.* When equipped with a bachelor’s degree, our alumni rise above a myriad of challenges to change the trajectory of their lives, families, and communities. We are proud to say that College Track alumni are securing jobs at the same rate as graduates nationwide and earning higher salaries than their low-income peers.

Darius, a College Track alumnus (featured on page 10), is an example of the type of leader and problem solver we have the privilege to serve. Now a UC Santa Cruz graduate, he has worked hard to secure long-term professional and financial security.

To ensure our students achieve upward social mobility, we piloted a new scholarship strategy that addresses the growing cost of tuition while guiding students to attend Best Fit colleges—where they are most likely to graduate.

Our Ten-Year Promise Our program model is designed around a ten-year promise we make to students— to support them from ninth grade all the way through college graduation. High school students spend the first four years of College Track at our centers, where they prepare for the academic, social-emotional, and financial demands of college.

College Matriculation

College Support Once our students enroll in college, they continue to build on the trusted relationships they established with our staff while in high school. Our College Completion program addresses the common reasons why students from low-income communities often drop out of college.

Financial Assistance Our merit-based scholarships, awarded in high school and distributed in college, reinforce habits for college success (i.e., earning money for a high GPA, consistent attendance, etc.), while our need-based scholarships bridge a crucial financial gap.

Advising College Completion Advisors continue to support the students they worked with in high school by contacting them regularly, visiting them on campus, tracking their transcripts, and identifying ways they may need additional guidance.

Social-Emotional Wellness The physical and emotional transition to college is difficult for many students, especially for low-income and first-generation students who have experienced trauma. Our social workers train each College Completion Advisor to motivate students to persist through each year of college.

One of our core responsibilities is to identify a college that is right for each student. A Best Fit college has a strong track record of success for low-income and first-generation students, and meets the following criteria:

I always tell my students that the world is bigger than one city. They can live a life past the hustle, past what the media portrays, and sometimes even how they’re labeled by adults.

Sitting anxiously in my high school guidance counselor’s office, I looked up at all the college flags on the wall, knowing that is where I was headed.

Many of the flags were for colleges I had already visited. At College Track, I had a mentor who made sure I was on top of all the deadlines for college tours, essays, and scholarship applications. My calendar was booked months in advance, and I even interviewed at Harvard University.

So when my counselor gave my transcript a cursory glance and asked if I had seen the army recruiter yet, my disillusionment was palpable. Trying to be respectful of those who serve our country, I politely declined and said, “Thank you, but I have completed my A-G requirements, and I’m here to talk about college.”

Her entire demeanor changed. “Oh, you know about those?” she asked as she proceeded to open college brochures and go through admissions information.

She finally saw me as a candidate for college instead of a black male statistic. College Track had prepared me to advocate for myself in this moment, and in so many more that followed.

I joined College Track my sophomore year of high school and soon found a group of people I can only describe as family, who provided me with the positve energy I needed in my life. The moments at the College Track Oakland center were joyful and peaceful,

and sometimes they cut a stark contrast to what was going on at home. On one occasion, a conflict with my brother left me injured. I went to school and didn’t say a word to anyone. At the end of the day, I remember walking straight into my College Track site director’s office and sitting down. A gentle question from him, “How you doing today?” released a flood of tears that I had held back all day. He listened, shared some of his own personal experiences, told me I wasn’t alone, and reassured me that I was loved and supported. Through this process of mutual understanding, I was able to stay focused and continue to push towards my goals.

In 2008, I enrolled at the University of California Santa Cruz, where I cultivated my love of working with youth and discovered that I had a gift for mentoring. I interned at a food justice program and took on a leadership role—organizing 20 high school students from alternative schools to grow gardens and run a farm stand. I also worked with the Boys and Girls Club as a basketball coach, where kids learned teamwork through constructive play. In a short period of time, I went from being a young city kid from Oakland to a college student who loved to be a hands-on mentor. The insights I shared with my students about navigating life’s waves were the very lessons I learned from my College Track family.

It finally clicked for me that completing my degree was a stepping stone to help me make a difference in the lives of young people. That was all the fuel I needed to see it through.

At UC Santa Cruz, I made friends quickly and I got involved in everything. I petitioned to start a Black Men’s Alliance (which is still thriving today), interned at the Women’s Center, joined the rugby team, and directed a play about Hurricane Katrina.

Then, my life pivoted in a way I never expected—in a way that would affirm my purpose forever. My younger cousin, Davante, looked up to me, so when I started school I made it a point to show him what college was all about. I would bring him and his best friend to campus regularly and they stayed with me in the dorms. One night before Davante’s birthday, I texted him but I didn’t get a response. The next morning, I woke up to learn that Davante had been shot and killed.

I never had a moment to grieve when I went back to campus. I didn’t care about finishing school anymore.

I’d completely lost sight of my motivation to graduate.

With the support of campus advisors and my College Track family, I was able to keep going. I remember countless conversations with my mentor, reminding me of the future I had ahead of me, and how much Davante would have wanted me to continue.

It finally clicked for me that completing my degree was a stepping stone to help me make a difference in the lives of young people. That was all the fuel I needed to see it through.

Today, as a Homeless Youth Liaison for the Santa Clara County Office of Education, I advocate for families whose voices often go unheard. In any given week, I will look for a student who hasn’t shown up to school, connect families to shelters, or buy bus passes and clothes for students living out of cars or on the street.

This fall, I started a master’s program in Public Administration at San Jose State University. I’m committed to learning about the systems and policies we need to change in order to honor our young people and communities. And, I believe in a world where we all take part in that change together.

Losing him made me reflect on teen gun violence, and how youth are growing up in a troubled society, and yet they are labeled as troubled youth.

Alumni Outcomes We believe that a college degree unlocks the potential of every student and leads to a successful career with financial security.

To that end, we survey our graduates to gain more insight into this assumption and to discover which support services correlate with more successful career outcomes. We measure our students’ upward social mobility—the ability to earn more money than their parents—because equity matters, both in education and in the working world.

4 STEPS TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE After examining our graduates’ outcomes, we identified four concrete steps students can take to increase the value of their college degree. Overall, our results highlight the importance of addressing the academic, financial, and social-emotional pressure that can prevent students from graduating.

Multiple summer internships in a student’s field of study open more doors after college. Students who secure at least two internships in college are more likely to be employed within six months of graduation and have a starting salary above $50,000.

Graduates with lower GPAs in college have lower salaries after graduation. Our data show that an “A“ student earns $10,000 more in their first job than a “C” student.

Students who work more than 15 hours per week have a harder time maintaining a “B” average or higher. Graduates are torn between working to pay for their education and having enough time to earn the grades to graduate.
