2024-2025 Report on Philanthropy

Board Chair Message

Dear NCS Community,

This past June, our family celebrated a milestone as our daughter, Meredith, graduated as part of the Revolutionary Class of 2025. Handing her diploma to her was a privilege and a moment I will always treasure.

This year also marks a milestone for the school itself: 125 years of believing in the power of young women. Our history began in 1900, when Phoebe Hearst made a visionary gift of $200,000 to open NCS— the very first school on the Cathedral Close. Her philanthropy set in motion a legacy of educational excellence and opportunity that continues to shape generations of young women today.

At the start of this anniversary year, Elinor invited the Board to think boldly about what it will take to ensure NCS thrives for the next 125 years. Through thoughtful discussions and generative conversations, we reaffirmed our deep commitment to the NCS mission and developed an adaptive strategic framework to guide the school’s future. I am deeply grateful to my fellow Board members for their wisdom, vision, and especially their generosity in underwriting this important work.

Our community’s philanthropic support this year has had a profound and measurable impact. The Purple & Gold Fund reached new heights, and the endowment grew by nearly $10 million through new contributions and investment income. These resources strengthen our foundation and expand our capacity to pursue bold ambitions for our students. With the right leadership, the right

vision, and your continued partnership, I am confident that NCS’s future is bright.

I also wish to recognize and thank the Board members who concluded their terms of service at the end of the school year: Jason Goodwin, Liz Hayes, Wray Mouio, Tushar Patel, Carmen Perkins, Roland Reynolds, and Mieka Wick ’93. Their dedication, counsel, and generosity will benefit the school for years to come. At the same time, I am delighted to welcome four new at-large members—Alexa Chopivsky ’97, Kim D’Abreu, Sandra Ortiz, and Brendan Sullivan—whose expertise and commitment will strengthen our work in the years ahead.

As you read this report, I hope you feel the same pride and optimism I do, knowing that your gifts are being put to the highest and best use. Just as Phoebe Hearst’s generosity launched a school that has helped young women unlock their power for more than a century, your support today ensures that her vision continues to flourish—preparing the next generation of powerful, purposeful leaders our world needs.

Gratefully,

Financial Summary

Operating Budget July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025

The Importance of Philanthropy to our Financial Model

Each year, the Governing Board’s goal is to balance funding the school’s operations with maintaining a tuition level that does not unnecessarily overburden families. Philanthropy, derived from the Purple & Gold Fund and the endowment, supports 10% of each student’s experience.

Prioritizing our Greatest Asset

Faculty and student-facing staff salaries are our most significant expense because they are our greatest investment—the mentors and educators who bring our mission to life and shape every student’s experience.

National Cathedral School

2024– 2025 Donor Honor Roll

This Report on Philanthropy marks a milestone year in more ways than one. As we began celebrations for our 125th Anniversary earlier this year, we witnessed record-breaking fundraising achievements. Through the collective generosity of 1,500 members of the community, NCS raised over $8.8 million. This total represents gifts of all sizes and purposes. Much of this support, through the Purple & Gold Fund, had a direct and immediate impact on the life of the school, aiding a wide range of priorities, including student access, cocurricular programming, faculty professional development, and much more.

Along with current operational support, you also invested deeply in the long-term health of our school, contributing to the growth of the endowment. The impact of a gift rarely stops with the recipient. Each student or teacher who benefits from your generosity in turn impacts hundreds of lives through their work, exponentially increasing the value of your philanthropy. Your support is essential, thank you!

We recently invited 1900 Society members to tell us why they give to NCS year after year.

As a loyal member of our 1900 Society (3+ years consecutive giving), alum Nalini Butterworth ’24 shares why they give every year: “I have been donating to the Purple & Gold Fund since I entered NCS in fifth grade—coming on ten years ago.

As a student who received financial aid, I am familiar with the opportunities granted to an NCS student, but also have gratitude for them. What I am most thankful for as an alum are all the faculty and staff who supported my curiosity, a fact that led me to my favorite hobbies, my college and major, and has more importantly shaped the student I am today.”

Q&A

Erik & Sara Swabb, Tippi ’33

Last fall, we were excited to welcome the Swabb family–Erik, Sara, and Tippi ’33–to the NCS community. Erik and Sara joined NCS from another private school and generously supported NCS with a Satterlee Society level gift to the Purple & Gold Fund.

We interviewed Erik and Sara to learn more about what brought their family to NCS and what inspired them to give back to our community.

What brought your family to NCS?

We had heard about NCS’s great reputation from friends and community members. Our neighbors are a wonderful NCS family! From the beginning of the application process and from our first visit to campus, we felt warmly welcomed by Head of School Elinor M. Scully, administrators, faculty, and staff and were given a wonderful introduction to the life of the school.

As we learned more about NCS, we were drawn to the strong academic foundation the school provides its students and to its commitment to developing wellrounded young women. In particular, NCS’s emphasis on character, community, and service really resonated with our family.

What inspired you to support the school with a Satterlee Society gift?

We gave because we have been so impressed with the quality of the teaching here. It truly feels like each teacher knows Tippi individually and tailors their lessons to her. It is so wonderful to know that our daughter has an adult support system outside of her family that cares about her personal and academic growth. Her teachers and other trusted adults even give us tips to help us draw her personality out more!

What has stood out to you about the NCS community so far?

We’ve been impressed with how well-run the school is (and NCS is not our first private school experience!). We feel that the school makes a real effort to be organized and timely in its communications and have appreciated that the school has committed administrators and staff, in addition to its teachers. We brought a medical concern to members of the Lower School team and felt immediately supported by their timely responses.

We’ve also appreciated that there are a variety of ways parents can get involved in school life. I (Sara) have been volunteering as a parent ambassador and have made great connections with families across the school.

What are you most excited about in becoming part of our school community?

It’s been such a wonderful experience watching Tippi transform into a more confident person in the care of her teachers and peers. We can’t wait to watch her continue to grow during her time at NCS! We are also excited for her to explore the full breadth of what NCS has to offer in terms of extracurriculars, from visual arts and theatre to athletics and community service, as she transitions into the Middle and Upper Schools.

Since the Dillons initiated this challenge, 54 alumnae have responded by joining the Satterlee Society, unlocking $67,500 in additional funds for NCS! Join the Dillons with a

Over the past three years, the NCS endowment has experienced substantial growth. As of June 30, 2025, the endowment stands at $57.8 million. Both new contributions and strong investment returns drive this growth, demonstrating notable progress on our path to leveling the philanthropic playing field. And, as the chart on the following page demonstrates, we must continue to make growing the NCS endowment a philanthropic priority.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the donors who established newly endowed funds. Their generosity provides NCS with an enduring source of income to support our highest priorities—most notably, our people. The income generated from these funds is directed primarily to advancing the success of our students and the excellence of our faculty.

Newly Endowed Funds in 2024–2025:

• Frances “Parkie” Adams Blaylock ’49 and Dan W. Blaylock Endowment for Faculty Support

• Chopivsky Family Fund

• Carolyn James Ficklen Interdisciplinary Fellowship Fund

• Penny Glass ’59 Scholarship Fund

• Julia Lello Lacy Legacy Fund

• C.V. Starr Scholarship Fund

Growing the Endowment is a Key Priority

We believe NCS offers a worldclass education in the heart of Washington, DC and philanthropic support is a critical tool that enables NCS to continue to distinguish itself and its programs, ensuring our students have the opportunities they need to thrive and excel. Despite recent gains in the endowment, it still does not rise to the level of our peer schools.

This resource gap presents a challenge today, and an even greater challenge in the future. Unless significant investments are made to NCS’s endowment, the disparity between NCS’s endowment and those of our peer schools will increase exponentially over time due to the power of compounding interest.

An Endowment Resource Gap Grows Wider Over Time

Q&A

Ficklen Family Endows Fellowship in Honor of Long-time Teacher

National Cathedral School is delighted to announce the Carolyn James Ficklen Interdisciplinary Fellowship Fund, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of Ellen Ficklen ’69, Paul Zador [Ellen’s husband], and Anne Ficklen ’74. Carolyn James Ficklen, or Mrs. Ficklen, as she was known to generations of students, taught at NCS for 20 years. A geologist by training, she developed an interdisciplinary Geography course and was part of the NCS Science, History, and Religion Departments.

The income from this fund will support faculty professional development with a preference for activities that contribute to interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of the world.

We spoke with Ellen ’69 and Anne ’74 to learn more about what inspired them to create this fund in honor of their mother and in support of NCS faculty. Mrs. Ficklen’s third daughter, Frances ’71, died in 2005. She similarly appreciated her mother’s great legacy.

Tell us about your mother. Why did you decide to name this fund after her?

Anne: Our mom, Carolyn James Ficklen, was one-of-a-kind. She was a lifelong learner and was endlessly curious and creative. She was an expert in the field of geology—Vassar College still uses specimens in Geology 101 that she collected as an undergraduate, and, before she became a graduate student at Columbia University, our mom discovered and named a fossil. Then, she used “her” fossil as the basis of her master’s thesis! But she also loved learning about things outside her own field of expertise. Every day at NCS she posted a New Yorker cartoon in the faculty room and wrote a quote or proverb on the blackboard for her students to reflect on. She was famous for her annual haiku contest; the Class of 1984 dedicated its yearbook to her using haikus!

Ellen: Our mom possessed an enviable mix of strengths. Part of her creativeness was her ability to juxtapose ideas from different fields. Plus, she was truly kind and had a great sense of humor.

Why are you passionate about supporting NCS faculty?

Anne: How can you not be! My teachers were engaged, supportive, and deeply invested in my growth and the growth of my classmates. Ellen and I believe NCS educators deserve the chance to explore new perspectives and to deepen their expertise. Through this gift, we hope they feel recognized and appreciated for everything they do.

Ellen: I spent a bit longer in the DC public school system than Anne did. At NCS, I felt seen as an individual by my teachers. I deeply appreciated the attention they gave to my classmates and to me. Many of our teachers were Seven Sisters graduates, some of whom had graduate degrees. All of them wanted engaged work lives. They were incredibly smart women who were interested and interesting.

Is there someone in your life who taught you about the importance of giving back?

Ellen: A commitment to helping others is core to our family identity. Our mother and grandmother were teachers; our father, both grandfathers, and an uncle were Presbyterian ministers. Anne and I were talking recently about just how often the word eleemosynary—meaning charitable giving—came up during our family dinners! The importance of service and giving back were constant threads throughout our childhood.

Anne: NCS helped continue to support the spirit of generosity in us. I remember carefully picking out my present for our Gift for an Unknown Child service every December. I know my gift mattered to the child who received it; I always wanted it to be a great one.

What is your message to faculty members who benefit from this fellowship?

Ellen: Our first message is thank you. You’re stupendous. Our second message is to have fun and to enjoy this opportunity!

What do you hope our community learns from your philanthropic example?

Anne: There are all sorts of ways you can give back to the people and communities that have supported you. Feel free to think creatively about what that something might be.

The Class of 1984 dedicated their yearbook to Mrs. Ficklen

They expressed their appreciation for this beloved NCS teacher in the form of haikus:

This year we give For dedication to us We wish you the best.

You taught us all of Contour lines and did it all With such great love.

Mrs. Ficklen, your unique approach to teaching has embedded geographical highlights in our hearts long since Eighth Grade. Who can forget that contour lines never touch, the haiku contest, or the term Mohorovicic discontinuity? Thank you for your twenty years of enthusiastic effort, your warmth and caring, and, most importantly, your friendship to the school community.

If you are interested in honoring the legacy of Mrs. Ficklen and expanding opportunities for NCS faculty, you can contribute to this fund by designating a check to the NCS Ficklen Fellowship Fund or by contacting Development for other ways to give at ncsdevelopment@ncs.org or 202-537-6667.

Olivia B. ’26 gives back to NCS

When we asked why, here’s what she had to say: “Throughout my time at the National Cathedral School, I have been surrounded by faculty, staff, and fellow students who have given me so much through their genuine thoughtfulness, dedication, and passion for the NCS community. Furthermore, I have discovered that NCS’s strength lies in its diversity.

Through the various academic offerings within the Close, I have been able to explore a vast array of passions. From painting live models, exploring narratives by James Baldwin and Virginia Woolf, to conducting biological experiments, NCS has championed curiosity and selfdiscovery. Above all, the numerous student-run programs and organizations, such as the annual Diversity Forum and the Black Student Union, have provided me with opportunities to learn about and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and identities that enrich and define the NCS community.”

Parkie Adams Blaylock ’49 and Dan Blaylock Make a Transformative Gift

In recognition of the pivotal role that the teachers play in creating a stellar educational experience for the students at National Cathedral School, Frances “Parkie” Adams Blaylock ’49 and Dan W. Blaylock have established a $500,000 endowment for faculty support. This endowed fund will help ensure that NCS continues to attract, retain, and sustain highly skilled educators who are dedicated to creating the most transformative learning environment possible for our students.

Parkie has held NCS teachers in great esteem since her days as a student, and she has stayed close friends with many, including her Latin teacher, Clara Burke, and recently retired fourth grade English teacher, Molly Hemphill, who invited Parkie to her classroom on numerous occasions to explore creativity and poetry with the students.

For over 75 years, Parkie Adams Blaylock ’49 and her husband, Dan Blaylock, have loyally and generously demonstrated their commitment to NCS and the devoted faculty who have committed their lives to the care and shaping of our students. Parkie continues to be a dedicated leader in the community. She has served as a Governing Board member for four years (1994–1999, Vice-Chair 1997–1998) and as a Class Representative, annual giving class agent, and reunion volunteer for decades. During the 2004 Reunion Weekend, Parkie was awarded the Bettie Warner Thompson ’46 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for her lifelong support, loyalty, and dedication to NCS.

Parkie and Dan have been enriching the experience of NCS students and teachers for longer than anyone in NCS’s history, and now they have ensured that the impact of their philanthropy will continue on in perpetuity! We could not be more grateful for their generosity and leadership.

Last year, recurring gift sizes ranged from $4 to $900 monthly, totaling over $50,000 and proving that every contribution, no matter the size, adds up! Monthly giving is a great way to maximize your impact.

Alumna and current parent, Victoria Sherk ’92, tells us why she gives via recurring payments: “I love the recurring gift option! I don’t have to remember to send my annual contribution, and I ultimately end up giving more than my annual goal. It’s super convenient.”

Visit ncs.org/support/make-a-gift to set up a recurring gift today!

Honoring the Legacy ofJohn LeMoyne

JOHN LEMOYNE ELLICOTT P’75, A FIXTURE ON THE CLOSE, was a former trustee of the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation and a former Governing Board Chair of NCS. He gave generously of his time, talents, and resources to NCS. LeMoyne passed away peacefully in January 2024 at the age of 94. In a final and enduring act of generosity, LeMoyne included NCS in his estate plan, providing support to the school’s endowment and strengthening opportunities for generations of NCS students to come.

Colleagues and friends remember him for his longstanding service on the Close. Rev. Canon Jan Cope, Provost of the Washington National Cathedral, says

“LeMoyne let his life speak for the things he most valued: family, friends, his law practice, the Cathedral Close community, and God’s great creation.” Fellow NCS parent and law partner, Peter Trooboff P’93, P’96, recalls a common refrain from leaders on the Close in need of counsel: “Better call LeMoyne.” Former Head of School Aggie Underwood cherished his ability to guide with subtlety and strength, noting his “amazing wisdom and way of suggestion that led to the best advice and subsequent decision making of almost anyone with whom [she] had worked.”

LeMoyne’s legacy embodies a consistent generosity of spirit, a deep support for women leaders, and a strong faith in the transformative power of education.

Cornerstone Society

The Cornerstone Society was established to recognize those who support NCS through their estate plans. These remarkable donors recognize NCS’s foundational role in their lives and exhibit the vision and foresight to ensure that the school’s legacy will endure.

Liz Augustine ’75: Investing in the Future of NCS

We are excited to welcome Liz Augustine ’75 into the Cornerstone Society and are inspired by her thoughtful generosity. Before returning to campus for her Reunion in May, Liz notified the school of her decision to include NCS in her estate plans. Liz shared a few reflections on her NCS experience and on why she’s decided to make NCS one of her top philanthropic priorities.

My life would have been very different had I not attended NCS. My family has a long tradition of educating women going back generations. Attending NCS was a perfect fit for my ongoing family legacy. I credit NCS with providing me with a strong foundation for my future career, which was the expected outcome of my education.

One unexpected outcome is that my NCS connection has deepened over the last 50 years. My class has grown closer, and our relationships remain strong. Between the Reunions, we’ve spent long weekends together across the country. We are in frequent communication and support each other through life’s highs and lows.

When I was back on campus recently, I was pleased to hear about, and witness evidence of, the emphasis on each individual student. I believe that if you can bring your whole self to your studies and to your work, you can spend more energy learning and accomplishing. If you have to hide parts of yourself, more energy goes to that effort, which serves as a brake on the work you want to do.

As a student, I felt that anyone was welcome at the school, but you needed to fit yourself into the general concept of an NCS student. I noticed that there is now more room for, and curiosity about, differences in cultures, family life, and learning styles than when I was a student. That approach can only make the school stronger and more effective.

The makerspace astounds and pleases me. It would have been completely affirming to my 15-year-old self. It makes me want to be an NCS student today! The resources— the physical plant and all the labs—are extraordinary.

I believe in ensuring that an NCS education is accessible to talented, interested, and motivated young women of all backgrounds. I believe that NCS gives students the tools to put their stamp on the world—sometimes in very public ways, other times more quietly. It is satisfying to know more girls will have the opportunity to attend NCS, to derive strength and power from each other, and to go on to lead interesting and effective lives. Including NCS in my estate plans makes me feel hopeful about the future.

Anyone can become a member of the Cornerstone Society simply by confirming their bequest plans. Planned gifts leave a lasting impact on NCS. Learn more about how you can build your legacy by reaching out to the Development Office at ncsdevelopment@ncs.org or 202-537-6667

For a list of more than 200 Cornerstone Society members, please visit the NCS website at ncs.org/support/planned-giving

Volunteer Leadership 2024–2025

Our success is only possible because of the countless community members who have offered their time in service to our students, faculty, and the entire NCS family during the 2024–2025 school year. Classrooms are more vibrant and our community is better connected as a result of your care. A special thanks to our alumnae and parent leaders who guided the efforts of our dedicated volunteers. To all of you, we share our immense gratitude!
