WELCOME TO THE LATEST EDITION OF OUR MAGAZINE I hope you have all had a busy start to the year!

We have been busy planning new courses and revamping old ones. The Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning course has now been updated for new starters, and includes an initial introduction to both the basic techniques and a practical hands on with different types of equipment. Feedback indicated that some of the previous attendees, who had not been in the industry, so had some knowledge gaps, which made some of the course content a little challenging. Secondly, we’ve had an exclusive course designed by The National Academy of Crime Scene Cleaners. Members can learn about all aspects of blood trauma in relation to carpet and upholstery cleaning. Contact the office to book your space as these are limited. Our brand new Commercial Cleaning course proved very popular amongst members, and the next one in June is already filling up fast. This one day course is designed to help you develop commercial work, focusing on the different types of commercial carpet cleaning and the appropriate methods and equipment to use. Furthermore, the importance of effective pricing and developing key business relationships. Course tutor, Paul Pearce shares his vast knowledge and experience of this. We have been up and down the country at our regional meetings, ensuring we involve all our members in the decisions around operating the Association. It is vital we fully understand and keep up to date with any regional variations. A big thankyou to all the members that have attended

so far, it has been fantastic to share some of our plans and possible future developments with you, and also discuss a wide range of industry specific topics and listen to any feedback or concerns. The date for The WCP Show 2018 is Saturday 8th September, which will be held at the NAEC, Stoneleigh Park. The feedback from last year’s exhibition was very positive and this year we will be adding some interactive sessions. The list of exhibitors and the day’s schedule will be announced soon. Finally, The Association is 50 years old this year and we have arranged a gala dinner on Saturday 21st April 2018 at the Crowne Plaza, Stratford upon Avon. I really hope you can attend and join in the celebrations of this fantastic milestone. Please see the back page for more details. That’s all from me for now. Remember - if you ring me, I may not always answer, but I will call you back - I will always be honest to you, and if I can help you, I will. Regards, Dave

THINKING ABOUT CLEANING RUGS?

by Paul Pearce

The cleaning of rugs has been a passion of mine for many years and I have great thirst for helping others to understand how they too can clean and look after these precious commodities. Some may think it a simple process to carry out a clean on a rug. In some ways they would be correct, but only if they are aware of what they are doing. You see there are so many things to consider when taking on a cleaning project of someone’s pride and joy, often offering memories of a holiday, a celebration, a gift, an heirloom or simply a rug which was purchased to match a design or colour concept.

The fibres that are used in rug manufacture, whether by hand or machine, can vary greatly. Wool, silk, rayon, goat hair, cotton, linen, jute, leather, polypropylene, nylon, acrylic, polyester and many more. What about how it’s made? Tapestry, embroidered, handmade, hand knotted, machine made, tufted, knitted or made from a kit. Your client will relate more to the sentimental value of the rug rather than what it costs. You could look at a rug and have a rough idea of what it had cost and wish to explain to your client that they could buy a new one for what it is going to cost to clean it. You’d be very wrong. Your client wants to have the rug cleaned, value has nothing to do with whether the rug is worth cleaning or even if it can be cleaned. Your goal should be to remove the soiling that is reducing the look of the rug as well as making it unhealthy for the environment it’s residing in. Of course, this all rests on your understanding of the various cleaning choices on hand for the type of construction, dyes and fibre content that you are faced with. Often a rug can be cleaned in-situ but the reality is that taking it off site is going to be far more beneficial. You have the ability to vacuum or beat it both sides. Sure, I have seen some carpet cleaners lay plastic down in their clients home inside and on the drive or patio to beat the rug, but is that really being professional?

THE CLEAN SHEET

When you take it off-site you can control far better what you do to it, you can event clean it multiple times if you feel it necessary. I’m not talking immersion cleaning either, although if you have the ability and the rug requires it because it is contaminated in some way, then even better. Mind you, you will also need the equipment to dry it efficiently as well. A lot of rug cleaning can be compared to the cleaning of upholstery, especially the dyes and the use of fine fibres such as silk, viscose and even wool. The chemical activity and pH of the cleaning solution needs to be monitored carefully. In fact, a neutral shampoo is often all that is needed to remove the soiling and this has less chance of moving or causing colours to bleed. Always carry out a test to determine whether colour will bleed and don’t forget the longer it stays wet the more likely it will be to move the dyes.

If you’re looking to get in to rug cleaning, the NCCA is offering a two day introductory course during 2018. See the dates and details on Page 12 of this issue. I have been cleaning rugs from all walks of life for more than 45 years. It has never diluted my appetite of cleaning any type of rug. It can come from China, Iran (formally Persia), India, Nepal, Tibet, Russia, Portugal, Spain, UK, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Caucuses, Turkey, America (North and South), Spain, Romania, Ikea and so on, the list is endless. However, does it matter that you know what country the

of origin. It will take you years of dedication to learn the exact area the rug came from and there are few that can do that. I certainly can’t, but enjoy learning every time I see a rug. There are many books on the subject. A couple worth seeking out are Peter Stones Oriental Rugs published in 2013 (more an encyclopaedia, offers so much information) and another book, Rugs Carpets of the World edited by Ian Bennett, published in 1997 and is a real insight into the rugs of the world. If you’re looking to get in to rug cleaning, the NCCA is offering a two day introductory course during 2018. See the dates and details on Page 12 of this issue.

IT AIN’T ROCKET SCIENCE! by Derek Bolton

Whether you use subcontractors or you have employees who carry out the cleaning for your company, or even yourself if you are an owner/operator, it is essential that you reinforce the basic guidelines from time to time. So often over the years I have taken a call from a cleaner who has a problem, after asking what it is I go on to ask questions about the fibres contained in the substrate also what chemicals and system has been used. I usually get chapter and verse of the procedures that allegedly have been carried out, it’s only when I probe a little deeper that I get to the truth. Once the real situation has been discovered then help can be given in an attempt to rectify the problem. Cleaning carpets and soft furnishings isn’t rocket science (I never thought I would say that) after all it looks so easy to pass a wand over a carpet or fabric and it come clean. It’s the knowledge behind it all that makes it look easy. Most cleaning companies these days offer a wide variety of services, [and soft furnishing cleaning usually is only a very small part of that service]. Dare I say less specialised/ more diverse, whatever you want to call it, it is important that you keep up to date not forgetting the basics of course. 1. Know what you are cleaning! With upholstery fabrics this isn’t easy, fibre identification tests taught on cleaning courses may NOT give you the information you are seeking, mainly due to the wide variety of fibre blends used. Colour bleed tests can be useful if correctly carried out. Wet tests that indicate how fibres react when in contact with moisture should be mandatory. 2. Don’t rely on labels! Many give vague or incorrect information some are there just to provide the manufacturer with a ‘get out’ clause. In essence it is all down to the cleaning technician’s judgement. Are you or your staff/ subcontractor up to making these decisions? NEVER rely on cleaning labels that are often attached to furniture. www.ncca.co.uk

3. Fully understand your cleaning products and equipment. There are some excellent products out there in the market place it’s all a matter of personal choice. a) READ the labels, most of them contain dilution rates. So often I get a cleaner call me to ask ‘How much shall I mix?’ My reply is, read the labels for the dilution rates and mix enough to do the job i.e. you will need more solution to clean a sofa than you would a chair (Now that isn’t Rocket Science is it?) b) DON’T immediately bombard a soiled fabric with too strong a chemical, there are other ways, safer ways c) Don’t use chemicals on a customer’s furniture or carpet/rugs until you are confident in their ability to do the job well and safely. In previous articles I have given you several sources for obtaining fabrics to ‘play’ about with d) HANDTOOLS - the good ones aren’t cheap but the really good things never are, they are pricy because a lot of research and development has been put into producing excellent products. What’s more they are so easy to use less strain on the wrists. Machines with variable pump psi ratios can help too especially when cleaning really fine fabrics e) Finally a little story… Many (too many) years ago when I bought my first extraction machine I paid the princely sum of £1694 plus a few bits of shrapnel, the machine had a 60psi pump and a single stage recovery vacuum. These days you can buy an extraction machine with TEN times the psi and vacuum power for more of less the same price…. and cleaners moan about prices. The same with chemicals when you break down the chemical cost to clean a carpet or three piece suite it equates to pence….peanuts Let’s say you keep the machine for two years….just take a moment to calculate what that investment has/will have earned for you. Surely your customer(s) are worth it? AREN’T THEY? NationalCarpetCleanersAssociation

NEW CORPORATE MEMBER Revolution Cleaning Systems LTD is the supplier and Master Distributor throughout the United Kingdom of Devpro (Tony Dang) Carpet Cleaning Wands, Rug Sucker & Rug wash Systems.

Revolution Cleaning Systems ethos is to bring industry leading products and chemicals to the UK market to assist the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry with their cleaning needs. Over the next 12 months, Revolution Cleaning systems will be working with our suppliers in America to bring a range of comprehensive cleaning solutions and equipment to the UK. In 2016 Revolution Cleaning Systems started importing titanium carpet cleaning wands from the US. Some market research quickly identified that there was not a great deal of choice when it came to titanium, lightweight carpet cleaning wands in the UK. The two ends of the spectrum appeared to be cheap inferior products. Or very expensive well engineered wands but at a price which, almost makes them an inaccessible resource. Revolution Cleaning systems set out to find a quality titanium wand which would delivery performance and value for Monday. RCS feel that the Devprop carpet cleaning wands offer just this solution. We currently stock a range of wands suitable for portable and truck mounted use. The range includes titanium carpet cleaning wands with the V3 2017 swivel making light work of previously fatiguing wand operation. Available in 12” 2 jet stainless steel heads, through to 14” 4 and 6 jet Aluminium heads all come complete with a

lightweight titanium vacuum tube in either 1.5 or 2”. Revolution Cleaning Systems also imports the rug sucker. Many carpet cleaning companies in the UK offer a rug washing or rug cleaning service. However, they don’t have the space, power, or financial backing to warrant the cost of a centrifuge for water extraction. Introducing the rug sucker, a must have tool for any rug cleaning facility. This versatile tool can be used for a range of tasks. It’s the perfect assistant for rinsing and washing contamination out of rugs, but it can also be used as a water extraction tool to remove large volumes of water from rugs which have been washed using a flood system. Water extraction times typically take between 8 and 15 minutes depending on the type of rug, and will work effectively even on large Chinese long pile woollen hand knotted rugs. A range of product videos and photos can be found on the revolution cleaning systems Facebook page. More information can be found on the revolution cleaning systems website. Myself and James are here to help, so if you have any questions, or wish to come and trial a product, please don’t be afraid to pick up to the phone. Tim – Revolution Cleaning Systems

THE CLEAN SHEET

FROM THE ARCHIVES: CLEANING HOTEL ROOMS For many years now I have looked after various hotels. Some large Five Star establishments along with motels and even Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Generally, they all need a similar attention to detail, but some more than others. The bigger and more exclusive the hotel the more frequently they will want your services. I look after one at the moment that has their own carpet cleaner (porter) and all I do is clean in the restaurant, lobby and lounges. The porter tends to carry out the emergency cleans and looks after the bedrooms, although I am reliably informed that as yet he has not undertaken anything in the bedroom other than what he can see when he walks in. Let’s look at the cleaning of hotel bedrooms for a minute and see how we can maybe improve our service. Those of us that clean bedroom carpets properly will know that the bed needs to be moved out of the way, so that a thorough vacuum can be carried out, and then to clean this area before the bed is put back in place. Have you ever stayed away overnight in a hotel and woken up in the morning with a bunged up nose, possibly sneezing and coughing, even runny eyes that you want to scratch at? Yes I know it could be all the soil in the pillow and mattress as well, it may not just come from the carpet. In fact that is a good reason to explain to the housekeeping www.ncca.co.uk

department that, not only can you clean carpets and upholstery, but also the mattresses. You would be amazed at the amount of soil that is collected in these areas and there are some good filter tools you can use to highlight this to your clients.

Smoking rooms will still be available and require cleaning and odour removal as they always have. Whilst bed linen and blankets NationalCarpetCleanersAssociation

THE CLEAN SHEET or duvets can be properly washed it does not remove the odours of the nicotine etc. from the mattresses, carpets, curtains and upholstery. All these areas need to be cleaned thoroughly to ensure any guarantee of success in removal. First of all a thorough deep vacuum of all these areas is required, (possibly advise new or washed pillows) moving as much furniture as you can during this process. Pre-spray in the normal way and give some dwell time prior to whichever process you are going to carry out. Test all fabrics for colour bleed etc. and carry out your clean in the usual way, ensuring that all soft furnishings in the room are cleaned to remove any smoke odour. You can also take down curtains and drop them into your drycleaner friend for re-hanging at a later date. When moving furniture away from walls to vacuum and clean please ensure to wipe skirting boards of any soil or even overspray caused by the cleaning process. Place all furniture (where applicable) back onto pads or blocks to ensure no dye transfer from legs etc. Re-align the pile by brushing it all one way after the cleaning process, this makes the carpet look appealing and assists the drying.

15

The mattresses can be cleaned in much the same way. Vacuum first, pre-spray and rinse extract, leaving the fabric to dry fully before any bed covers are replaced. The mattresses can be cleaned in much the same way. Vacuum first, pre-spray and rinse extract, leaving the fabric to dry fully before any bed covers are replaced. When I have cleaned mattresses in the past, it was perhaps due to an accident or during a spring-clean, which can be done at anytime during the year. I usually undertake to clean five to ten rooms a day and leave them off for twenty four hours, depending on the occupancy of the establishment. You will have to work closely with the housekeeping department as they will know exactly how and when they want rooms back. Be prepared that sometimes you will be stopped half way through your days quota because occupancy has gone up during the day and if the rooms aren’t let then money is lost. I have found over the years that hotels will often let you have rooms when their bookings are high but when bookings are low they don’t let you clean. So try and set up a monthly payment linked in with a maintenance program, so that in effect you can clean all year round or high and low season. Of course there will be hotels that are busy all year round, and don’t block rooms off, in this instance you will need to work even closer with the house-keeping department. I have found that cleaning in hotels to be very rewarding and worthwhile, as long as you don’t mind doing the late nights as well, when the restaurant, lobby/reception and lounge needs cleaning.

THE CLEAN SHEET

FROM THE ARCHIVES: LUXURIOUS SOFT FURNISHINGS This article was written to provide an insight in to top of the range soft furnishings, be it rugs, carpets, upholstery or drapes in all their different styles.

Although you are taught to complete a survey and test items thoroughly before carrying out any cleaning, you will need a very high level of expertise to even consider taking on work on some of these items. The soft furnishings at the top end of the market are items that are usually most at risk from damage, colour loss and texture change during the cleaning process. Some interior designers insist that the items should not be cleaned, however we all know that at some stage there has to be a regular maintenance plan in order to keep these prize possessions in tip-top condition. However, even with a regular cleaning schedule and professional stain removal, problems can occur. Axminster and Wilton wool carpets can be subject to shrinkage when wet cleaned. This is often due to installers not properly securing seams, which can then separate or open during cleaning. Seaming, in my experience, is often carried out with heat seaming tape, which is probably all down to the time and cost of installing this type of carpet. The sewing of the seams will obviously cost a little more, but come with many extra benefits. The first reaction of a client when they find one of their seams has ‘popped’ open is to blame the carpet cleaner, although the problem often lies with the original installation. www.ncca.co.uk

In the top end of the range of soft furnishings, high calibre hand knotted rugs and carpets are made with wool, silk, rayon/art silk or a combination of these fibres. Upholstery fabrics are sometimes even more complex, using cotton, linen, flax, silk and rayon. With these upholstery fabrics there can be three, four or even five blends of these fibres to construct the final design. With the increased use of silk and rayon fibres, the end products vary from being strong and durable, to very delicate; the latter being a problem for both cleaning and stain removal. Extra attention and care is needed when dealing with these types of fibres as they can, at any stage, be prone to dye bleed, colour change, or even alterations in their appearance and feel. By now you have probably realised that these types of fabrics are not bullet proof, unlike the solution died synthetic fibres, although even these have their problems.

By now you have probably realised that these types of fabrics are not bullet proof, unlike the solution died synthetic fibres, although even these have their problems. The high end of the fabric market seems to be growing, such is our opulent society, and these ‘speciality’ rugs and carpets are created without a single concern for their maintenance. Interior designers tend to feature an array of bright colours, ranging from purples, reds and yellows, plus rust, however the UV rays from sunlight NationalCarpetCleanersAssociation

NCCA_

THE CLEAN SHEET can alter or fade the dyes and they can even be affected by the different shades of lighting found in ‘designer homes’. You may also find that they bleed when wet cleaned, as the dyes may not have been tested for colourfastness, or have a British Kite Mark approval (although, even this does not always guarantee the problem won’t arise). The construction of fabrics in the high end upholstery market can include use of ratine (loop faced yarns), boucle, woven crewel, ribbed pile and patterned or crushed velvets, all of which can be subject to shading, pile distortion and texture change, even with the most professional cleaning and care. These types of fabrics are often of delicate construction. New chenille upholstery does not fair much better either, as it is subject to excessive shedding, loss of pile and, most alarming, pile removal while being vacuumed (be aware, this is a manufacturers problem).

rug or soft furnishing can actually look like colour change. This is usually more apparent under certain light levels, where even small differences can be seen in the way of pile distortion, loss of twist, greying or dulling. However, there can also be a real colour loss, so be careful when carrying out your pre-inspection. To the average person it may look like colour loss but to the professional with the expertise, the difference can be explained to the client. There are many risks to consider when cleaning these unique, beautiful and desirable high-endof-the-market creations, but with extensive knowledge, training, the correct equipment and cleaning products, the end results can be stunning. So the choice is yours, do you enhance and move forward your skills to the high end of the consumer market? Or just keep cleaning the same ploughed fields? Peter Collins – Honorary Member

Now, on to Jacquard fine woven fabrics. There are some beautiful designs, rich in texture and colour, ornate and elegant but, however impressive, they can be prone to dye bleed, colour loss and fading. Not only through exposure to the previously stated UV light, but also during and after the cleaning process, including the drying period. With these fabrics it only takes one weak dye to destroy the piece. Adding to this, these fabrics can also be subject to misuse by your client, their family or the household pets. When dealing with spots and stains you will ask the customer the usual questions… What have you done to remedy the stain? How did you go about it? Which products did you use? Etc. The answers are usually something near the truth, but you are not told everything as they have phoned you as a last resort, after other people have already made suggestions or tried a ‘remedy’, which may have bonded the stain to the carpet permanently. You may remember through your training that, on odd occasions, texture change in a carpet,

ROGUE CARPET CLEANER GETS CLEANED OUT Press Release – Devon Council Trading Standards A company director convicted of fraud, who operated two carpet cleaning companies, will have to pay back in full the £219007.12 that he made from his crime if assets are identified in the future. Adam Joseph Vallier, 35, of Hannington Road, Pokesdown, Bournemouth, had traded as A Star Carpet Cleaning Ltd and Premier Carpet Cleaning Ltd. He was investigated by Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards following complaints from consumers about the price they had been charged. Vallier travelled around the country targeting predominantly elderly people, enticing them with a ‘special offer’ to clean two carpets for £19. But once through the door, he or one of his operatives increased the price, to over £440 in one case. Devon County Councillor, Stuart Barker, who has responsibility for the Trading Standards service, said: “It’s sometimes easy to be duped by a supposed ‘special offer’, but the old adage holds. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The importance of using recognised, suitably qualified and accredited tradesmen should not be underestimated.” Vallier appeared before Exeter Crown Court on Friday 17 November for a confiscation hearing. Last year he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered to do 250 hours unpaid community work. Recorder, Mr Adam Vaitilingam QC, described Vallier’s behaviour as cavalier, corrupt and deeply unpleasant. The crimes committed by Vallier had a significant impact on his victims. Paul Thomas, Head of Service at Devon Trading Standards service, said: “The impact of rogue

trading on elderly victims can lead to feelings of distrust, anger and anxiety. As well as the effect on the victims, rogue traders, such as Adam Vallier, tarnish the image of legitimate businesses. It is therefore reassuring that he has been disqualified from being a Director for a considerable period of time. The Trading Standards service will continue to work hard to ensure rogue traders, such as Vallier, will be brought to justice. Rogue traders can cause harm not just to consumers but to legitimate, honest, hard-working traders and society as a whole.”

A company director convicted of fraud, who operated two carpet cleaning companies, will have to pay back in full the £219007.12 NCCA Training Director, Glyn Charnock, who was called upon as an expert witness in the case, had this to add: The National Carpet Cleaners Association is grateful to Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards for their efforts in pursuing this criminal and I was pleased to be able to help in securing the prosecution as an expert witness. Rogue traders like Mr. Vallier cause untold damage to the reputation of the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry, affecting the livelihoods of many reputable businesses, as well as the harm, both financial and emotional, caused to their victims. I hope this case highlights the importance of using qualified tradesmen with proper credentials and backing from a recognised body such as the NCCA. NationalCarpetCleanersAssociation

PROTECTING YOUR VEHICLE, TOOLS & EQUIPMENT As one of the recommended brokers to the NCCA, BeSure Broking Services are often asked advice on how our clients can keep their tools and equipment, which are stored in a vehicle, safe from theft. Did you know that the highest risk period is night time, and many insurers will not even consider giving cover! Whether you have chosen to insure your equipment or not, it makes sense to take all the steps possible to prevent a loss. The Metropolitan Police recommends you take the following steps to prevent thefts from vehicles: yy Always lock it - fuelling up or popping back into your house to get something are perfectexamples of how easy it is to turn your back for a moment and forget your vehicle is unsecured. So, get into the habit of locking your vehicle, even if you’re only going to be away from it for a moment yy Close windows and the sun roof to prevent ‘fishing’ - leaving windows or the sun roof opens invites fishing for items through the gap by hand or with, say, a bent coat hanger, which could also be used to unlock a door for them to get in. Thieves can be ingenious. Don’t give them the opportunity yy Fit locking, anti-tamper wheel nuts to secure alloy wheels - stolen wheels are valuable, so using locking wheel nuts reduces the risk of your vehicle’s wheels being stolen. yy Secure anything that’s on the outside of your vehicle - anything left on roof-racks, tailgate racks, holiday top boxes or tool chests are easily stolen when the vehicle is parked. the use of cable locks, padlocks and self-locking tool chests, which are secured to the vehicle, makes them more secure. Check out Sold Secure for more information and advice

19

yy Take it with your or hide it - Your mobile phone, coins, sunglasses, medication or other items that can earn quick cash are irrestistible to the opportunist thief. Remember, the cost of replacing a window is often much more than that of what’s stolen. It should go without saying that wallets, bags, purses and credit cards should never be left in an unintended vehicle. yy Hide electrical items and leave no clues - Leaving sat nav mounts, suction cup marks on windows or even cables in view gives it away that you may have left a Sat Nav, smartphone or other device in your vehicle. Even if they can’t see it, they may break in to see if it’s stored out of sight yy Take your documents with you - Having a vehicle’s registration and insurance documents could let a thief pretend to be the owner, which means they could sell it on quite easily yy Park in well-lit and busier area - It can take less than 30 seconds to break into a vehicle. Parking in well-lit areas and busy streets increases the chances of a thief being seen, so they’ll probably steer clear. yy Choose your car park wisely - If possible, always try to park in well-lit and staffed car parks or those with a Park Mark safer parking award - to find one, check out Park Mark. yy Advertise that no tools are left in the vehicle overnight - simple signs which can be transposed onto your vehicle, advertising the fact that no tools are left in the vehicle overnight could be enough to deter a would be thief yy Other steps that can be taken to protect your vehicle include - Van deadlocks, van security boxes and vehicle trackers The best way to protect your equipment from theft in vehicles is to not leave anything in an unintended vehicle. We however understand that this is not always possible. At BeSure, we understand everyone’s needs are individual so for a thorough review of your insurances, please get in touch! 8 STEPS TO A PHENOMENAL CLEANING & RESTORATION BUSINESS

PHENOMENAL SUCCESS STEP 5: PHENOMENAL MARKETING SYSTEMS Last month we covered marketing – attracting prospects. Have you ever attracted a prospect but didn’t close the sale? Did you attract the right kind of prospect? Or did you attract a price shopper? Before thinking about your sales process, make sure you’re doing a good job in marketing by attracting potential lifetime clients rather than customers that may or may not do business with you, and that will be gone with a cheaper price tomorrow. The next system is sales. Sales is everything you do to convert prospects into paying customers. Phenomenal sales converts the highest number of qualified prospects into customers. A phenomenal sales system is a group of working parts that duplicates results consistently.

MY 7 STEP SALES SYSTEM Many years ago, I developed a system that has proven to work in many small businesses around www.ncca.co.uk

the world. When you understand and apply this system, I believe you can close more sales because I have seen it work many times. Through this system, you will also confirm that you have the right type of prospect and you will disqualify the price shoppers (sounds nice doesn’t it?).

STEP 1: ESTABLISH RAPPORT Find out how they were referred to you, what triggered their interest in the ad, and build rapport around that. For example, a couple of questions you might ask… “How did you hear about us?” If they were referred, follow with “Great! What did so and so say about us?” You can then both build rapport around the person that referred them. If it was an ad “what was it about the ad that got your attention?” This step also helps you track your marketing results.

STEP 2: CONNECT EMOTIONALLY You may have heard that people always buy on emotion. They justify their purchase with logic, but the sale is really made on emotion. People only buy things because they have to they want to. NationalCarpetCleanersAssociation

THE CLEAN SHEET

21

STEP 4: PERCEIVED PROBLEMS. The purpose of this step is to identify the prospect’s needs, truly understand their fears and desires, and define the “perceived” problem. Make sure to ask enough questions in this step to truly understand what they feel the problem is, not what you think it is.

STEP 5: OUTLINE SOLUTION

The emotion of “have to” is to avoid pain where the “want to” is to get gain. One is the emotion of fear of loss (buying insurance), the other is the emotion of desire (getting that new Lexus).

If you have done a good job identifying the emotional needs and desires, you can now offer the right solution. But not too fast. You still don’t get to spew your features. Sorry! Instead, what you are going to do in this step is feedback what they have told you in the interview and confirm that they agree with the solution.

STEP 3: BUILD CREDIBILITY

Here are some rules to follow in this step: Approach the sales process as a consultant. What do consultants do? They ask questions to determine where you are so they can give you recommendations on how to get where you want to go. A doctor asks about your symptoms so he can give a prescription. A prescription without a diagnosis is malpractice! It is no different for the sales consultant.

Now it’s time for you to position your company as the company of choice, establish trust and believability, and help the prospect get their mind on the most important thing, which is NOT the cleaning or restoration, but rather choosing the right company.

Be sure to focus on benefits rather than features. Features are what the product or service is. Benefits are what the product or service does for them. As you’re going through the solution, connect the solution to your company values that were mentioned in step three.

You’ll want to have a one to two minute presentation about your company that demonstrates, trust, experience, and peace of mind.

And most importantly, get them to agree that you have recommended the right solution, before moving to the next step.

Start this step by asking the question “Would you mind if I take a moment and share a little about our company and how we are different than everyone else?” If you have serious prospect, they will appreciate this step. Price shoppers don’t care, they just want a price.

Be sure to focus on benefits rather than features. Features are what the product or service is. Benefits are what the product or service does for them.

In this step, you want to connect with the emotion they probably have. Most likely, they are fearful of choosing a new company to invite to their home or business. Let them know you understand that and share how you’ll help them avoid the pitfalls of choosing someone else, but do it briefly.

MEET THE DIRECTORS

MARTIN JOHNS I started cleaning in 2004 as a general cleaner concentrating on domestic and commercial cleaning purely to have the flexibility to spend more time with my young family.

Like most people, I fell into carpet cleaning and realised very quickly that I was out of my depth and soon completed some training. That’s when I developed a passion for knowledge and quickly went into end of tenancy cleans, whilst developing the carpet cleaning side of the business. To me good transparent customer service has always been my passion and strength. At first, I started employing people, but found them to be unreliable and had poor standards so I quickly had to reinvent the business.

My role now focusses on compliance, but as always, we need your help! My initial role within the NCCA was to help Glyn develop the membership structure which I felt passionate about. I also redesigned the survey forms with the new members in mind.

Furthermore, I wanted to help new members obtain good standards so took the role of personally contacting every new member who applied to join for around two years which was almost a full time voluntary position. My role now focusses on compliance, but as always, we need your help! If you see or hear of anyone who you believe is not a member, displaying or implying they are members, please contact the office and it will be investigated by myself or Nigel. I work with an amazing team of directors and with Dave at the helm, I’m proud to be part of the board and would like to continue to be as helpful as possible. Martin Johns
