DR. ME Flag: Brief Overview Brief

Concept

Audience

The brief is to create a flag. The flag can be based around any subject or design area. It must be 1m x 1.5m.

Our first initial concept was to use bookbinding and paper craft to create a flag that was made out of paper, but fold down into a book.

The audience is anyone who appreciates design at a large scale and subjects which conformt to the use of flags.

The second concept was to use illusion design and create a design that messes with the viewers eyes and makes them look a second time at it.

The flag is pattern based, so it will include bright and vibrant colours to attract the audience.

Background Information

Purpose

Deliverables

A flag is a piece of fabric (most often rectangular) with a distinctive design that is used as a symbol, as a signaling device, or as decoration. The term flag is also used to refer to the graphic design employed by a flag, or to its depiction in another medium.

The purpose of the brief is to create a flag design which will be printed onto fabric and displayed within an exhibition held by DR ME.

1. 1m x 1.5m fabric flag.

The first flags were used to assist military coordination on battlefields, and flags have since evolved into a general tool for rudimentary signalling and identification, especially in environments where communication is similarly challenging (such as the maritime environment where semaphore is used). National flags are potent patriotic symbols with varied wideranging interpretations, often including strong military associations due to their original and ongoing military uses. Flags are also used in messaging, advertising, or for other decorative purposes. The study of flags is known as vexillology, from the Latin word vexillum, meaning flag or banner.

Tone of Voice

The brief for me was a collaborative project, so this was great experience working alongside someone else, the brief had a short turn around period and was working with materials that I hadn’t before. These were all elements to which I don’t normally work with, hence giving me further experience.

Illusion Research We decided to go with the second concept which was using the idea of illusion design. This decision came around because we tried many times to make the idea of the book and paper craft work, but it wasn’t fisable. Researching into illusion design gave us some ideas on how we could create the design for the flag. We wanted to use bright colours, so CMYK came to mind.

Initial Designs We created a variation of different illusion designs for the flag.

Final Flag After creating the initial designs, we evaluated each one and decided to go with the third design. This was because the colours used compliment each other better, but they also work against each other well to create the illusion. Also within the centre of the design there is a wave created by lines, this reflects the idea of the flag blowing in the wind.

Final Flag Images From deciding on the final flag design, we printed it onto poplin through a digital fabric printer. The quality of this print was amazing to say its printed directly onto fabric. The colours look great on the fabric and work against each other really well to create the illusion.
