Editor’s Notes Nashville Music Guide is wrapping up another year of publication and we are honored to say that after 25 years we are still providing promotions to artists, musicians and writers to Music Row and beyond. This year has shuddered our industry to the core. I know we have never experienced such a silent year in our lifetime. Knowing the value of live music has been vastly taken for granted. No live concerts. No music festivals. No time together as a music family. This year has been tough to say the least. While this year has anything but normal for anyone in the music industry, we have strived to keep you up-to-date with coverage and content like we have in the past. And the industry as a whole has found ways through our amazing and ever growing means of technology to stay in touch, share the music, and still feel human connections during a time where social distancing has become the new norm. At least for now. For many artists that break before next year for the holidays is much needed. It is a time to relax, rejuvenate and spend time with ones that bring joy to their lives. This year is a little different; this year we have seen more holiday music by artists than ever before. And that cheer is really need more than ever. It unites people and helps uplift spirits especially during this time when everyone can truly use it. So whether you get to be with your loved ones this year or not, we hope that the this issue can brighten up your holiday season, with a few new and some traditional holiday tunes and virtual performances. In this issue we have highlighted several holiday events (virtual and socially distanced) and music to get you in the spirit. As well as a list of gifts and charitable giving back ideas. Tis the season for giving and thinking of others, the arts - whether it be music or artisans work can be such an uplifting gift. Plus, it is a great way to help an industry that has been hit so badly by the pandemic this year. Also in this issue, you will find our Best of 2020 section which highlights some of our favorites around the city in the Musical Realm of Nashville. We love our city so and love that everyday we get to share all the excitement it has with others. We would like to thank all of those that have continues to support us and we are all hoping that 2021 brings better things for us all AND more music!! Chris Tomlin Miracle Of Love “Christmas is a great surprise to the world, and personally this Christmas continues the spirit of unexpected gifts. When I found out we were expecting our third child this December, I was surprised… to say the least,” said Chris. “Around that same time, I was starting to write for this Christmas project. As I sat down the concept came so quickly. Christmas is about celebrating a gift from God, a surprise child for Joseph and Mary, a true Miracle Of Love. For me, it is another gift to be able to write a song about the surprise of our third baby girl and the parallel story of the birth of Jesus. As a songwriter, I felt so inspired and loved how each line of these songs could have a double meanings.”

Mid-Western Holiday Songwriters The Mid-Western Songwriters, Jeana Potthoff and Richard Roman, have been writing songs since 2010. They have written over 70 songs but have never even met each other. She lives in Nebraska and he lives in Ohio. They email and call on the phone, but have never Facetimed or Skyped. “In fact some day when we win the Oscar, my thank you speech starts with “This is the first time Jeana and I have every met in person,” said Roman. There hope is that their holiday songs are discovered so they can be a gift unwrapped during the holiday season. The four holiday songs they currently have released are “Keeping The Lights On For You,” “No One Knew,” and “Memories Come Back to Me.” Neither one of them sing and Roman jokes that people pay him not to sing. So they received permission from the Bluebird Café to have someone sing their songs for them. Besides their holiday Songs, Jeana and Richard write songs to touch hearts with powerful messages.

Give a little Christmas: Gift of Giving Back Spotlight

Every winter we hear a lot of talk about the “season of giving” and we rush around buying and wrapping pretty new things for our family and friends. Our debit cards sigh as we put them back in our wallets at the end of a long day. But what about the folks who don’t have the ability to buy those gifts?

I never had much growing up, but we never did without. As an adult, I have climbed above that poverty line and my kids have much more than they need, but I know how it felt to pinch pennies, cut corners, even pay a bill late in order to buy a small gift for my kids. Those years while we were building our life without support were harder than I hope they ever know. It was during those years that Give A Little Christmas was born. My best friend and fellow editor, Krys, was interviewing a friend for our previous magazine when he mentioned Santa Claus. He said he had always wanted to give presents to homeless children with his long white beard and his rosy-cheeked wife. Krys ran with it and helped Glenn and Dottie Tubb start making plans.

I will never forget our first event. Joey doesn’t climb out of bed easily and he had a particularly rough fall, recovering from a crushed hand. I had lost a lot of my odd jobs to his physical therapy and we had all been in a bit of a funk. That morning I told the boys that we had to go sing for a bunch of kids and help Santa give them presents. I still have never seen Joey jump out of bed so quickly. Our boys came alive when they met Santa and Mrs. Claus. They immediately went to work wrapping, distributing and helping however they could. Joey kept serving the Clauses plates of cookies and cups of milk. They glowed. That was the day I finally understood the spirit of giving, as it illuminated my children. Over the last seven years, Give A Little Christmas (GAL for short) has changed and grown into a blossoming 501c3. Glenn and Dottie had to retire for health reasons, I became the assistant director and our boys eventually learned the truth about the North Pole: it’s actually Southern. Elves are frequently long-haired teenage boys with slight drawls who look very cute in their fuzzy red hats.

GAL serves parts of Wilson, Davidson and Rutherford counties, collecting and distributing toys for families who rarely qualify for any other assistance. We service families with sudden life emergencies of all sizes from income loss due to totaled cars and unexpected injury expenses to big life emergencies like severe health problems, house fires, domestic violence and more. This Christmas we already have over 160 kids signed up.

every chimney.

4. Adopt! We welcome companies and organizations to adopt entire families. We especially like to adopt them out when the families have special-needs children whose gifts are rarely in the donation bins.

How The Elves Work

5. Get Ready For Next Year! We have a donation page where individuals and companies can opt to contribute monthly to our cause. Santa works all year and we do, too.

1. Collect! We host toy drives all over and all the time. We even have toy drives in the summer, a list of confirmed drives is included here.

As a special bonus, all contributions of time, gifts and money are qualifying donations and can get you a nice tax write-off or those much-needed volunteer hours.

2. Wrap! We throw wrapping parties where “elves” help us wrap the donations and label and bag them for distribution.

To have a box at your business, email givealittlechristmas@gmail.com

3. Party! We throw a big party for the kids to come meet Santa. Not all families can attend, but those who do receive large black bags out the back door while the kids are entertained. This way they wake to toys under their tree without us having to slide down

Ana Cristina Cash “Mele Kalikimaka” Cash put her spin on the Hawaiian holiday classic. A lively song with a dreamy, tropical melody and lyrical sentiments of trading in the stereotypical wintry Christmas for a sandy beach one.

Ronnie Milsap “Merry Merry Christmas Baby” Opening with a few descending notes, the keyboards fall in, then Milsap’s smoky voice rises. Slightly nostalgic, and wrapped in ribbons of Jim Horn’s sax, and old school background vocals.

George Shingleton “O Little Town of Bethlehem” A twangy, plaintive take on the traditional Christmas song, “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” Basic and stripped down, the song features Shingleton on vocals and Shane Sanders on resonator guitar.

Cory Marks “Jingle My Bells”

The song is a dynamic and emotional celebration of the wonder and power of Christmas. The original tune starts off with a sparse piano intro that evolves into a full orchestra crescendo of “love has come to save us.”

Cory’s rendition of “Jingle My Bells” carries the same rowdy feel as the original, kicking it up a notch with a supercharged tempo and a whole lot of fiddle.

Kelly Lang/TG Sheppard “Christmas in Mexico”

Ingrid Andress “Christmas Always Finds Me”

Kelly and TG have released their first-ever holiday single together. It is a sweet and romantic trip to sandy beaches and warm sunny days, buoyed by the sounds of mariachi trumpets and steel drums.

Inspired by this year’s pandemic time warp, Andress delivers the bittersweet xmas song 2020 deserves by reminding us that despite the tense times we’re living in, we’ll always have the holiday season to pick us back up.

The Christmas ballad showcases piano and cello instrumentals. “I’ve always wanted to release a Christmas song. Victoria Bailey got in the holiday spirit this year with the release of her single “Christmas Must Be Tonight,” a cover of a song originally released by The Band in 1977. “I love Christmas so much, and it’s been a dream come true to track a holiday song,” says Bailey. “The Band is one of my all-time favorites, and this song is so special to me. I wanted to put a ‘Victoria’ twist on it. My band and I recorded it live around one mic, acoustic, in the studio. There was so much beautiful energy in the room with the back-up vocals and string instruments, and it truly did feel like Christmas! It turned out exactly how I wanted – raw and live – and it just really represents who we are as a band and who I am as an artist.”

“WON’T BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS” HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH FEAT. ABIGAIL HODGES

you love.

“Green & Gold” is a love song, but it is also a song of longing. It’s a song that looks at the stressful rat race that has become the holiday season and wishes it would all just take a deep breath of crisp winter air and remember that it’s meant to be enjoyed, especially with someone

“As much as I cringe at the word, I suppose it’s a song about escapism,” said Jocoy. “ We have these ideas in our heads about “silent nights” and “peace on earth,” but in reality, it’s the capitalist dream. “Green & Gold” is about finding solace in the little moments that make the season so special and trying to make them last as long as possible; even if that’s just for one night.” “LOVE ONE ANOTHER” - LERA LYNN

Nashville songwriter, Lera Lynn has released a holiday EP that’s title track “Love One Another” is the perfect seasonal anthem for giving back. “When I wrote the lyrics for “Love One Another,” I was looking for a timeless and universal holiday message,” said Lynn. “Now, for America, the message seems more ‘timely’ than ever.”

“WHITE CHRISTMAS IN THE SAND” & “THERE’S NO NEED FOR MISTLETOE” JERROD NIEMANN Jerrod Niemann is doubling down with the holiday tunes this year. “White Christmas in the Sand” finds laid back inspiration in a breezy, beach side holiday. Serving up a warm, lighthearted twist on traditional Christmas music, the reggae-infused tune is sure to put a tropical getaway at the top of everyone’s wishlist. In wistful contrast, “There’s No Need for Mistletoe” channels heartbreak with a traditional Country sound and lyrics that reflect on a former flame during what should be the “most wonderful time of the year.”

“CHRISTMAS WILL BE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR” - GARY LEVOX Gary LeVox, most well-known and beloved as lead singer of Rascal Flatts, released “Christmas Will Be Different This Year” featuring Stephan Moccio (Big Machine Records). The thoughtful holiday track, that is especially poignant this year, was co-written by LeVox with Natalie Hemby and Moccio. The GRAMMY and Academy Award nominated composer/producer and Decca Records recording artist Stephan Moccio, who also produced the song, is featured as the pianist on the track.

“Years ago, I had a friend that was playing the fiddle and steel guitar for the Oak Ridge “IF WE MAKE IT THROUGH Boys,” said Niemann “He mentioned they were DECEMBER” - TERA LYNNE FISTER working on a Christmas album and wanted to know if I had any songs. ARTIST NEWS: Multi-Platinum trio Lady A will help fans celebrate the holidays this year, with the release of On This Winter’s Night Deluxe. After the timeless record initially landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums chart, the trio expands the collection to 16 songs including four brand new tracks.

CJ Solar got into the Christmas spirit early this year with his first holiday release, “The Only Present I Want.” Reminiscing of a Christmas past, CJ knows if it’s wrapped up in paper and tied with a bow it’s not what he really wants on Dec. 25. The single is available now on Raining Bacon Records via PlayMPE.

“We’ve always loved the holiday season, but it has become even more magical now that we’re parents,” Hillary Scott shared. “So, we thought we’d add on a new, original song that was inspired by our kids and our take on a few of our favorites, which has brought us so much joy. I think we could all use a little extra holiday cheer this year!”

“I wrote this with my buddies Devin Barker and Andy Wills a couple years ago,” said CJ. “As I was thinking about hopping into the studio this summer I thought, ‘what better year would it be to release some Christmas music to get the holiday cheer going?’ So we recorded it alongside some other music I’ll be releasing soon!”

The four additional songs reinvented for On This Winter’s Night Deluxe were produced by Dann Huff and include “Wonderful Christmastime,” “Christmas Through Your Eyes,” “Little Saint Nick” and “That Spirit of Christmas.” It is “Christmas Through Your Eyes” that sparked the project, written by Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott, the track perfectly captures the true spirit of the season. MEDIA NEWS:

Nashville-based independent singer-songwriter Ben Rector brings listeners a breath of fresh air with his new single “The Thanksgiving Song”. The sense of nostalgia and homecoming throughout the song is profound as he reflects on the love and belonging that comes from being surrounded by family on Thanksgiving - especially given this unprecedented year. “We made it through, I do believe, the longest year in history... Thank God that it’s Thanksgiving Day,” sings Rector.

A lifelong bluegrass and country music fan, legendary singer, songwriter and producer Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees) has long dreamed of a project that would bring him together with some of the artists he admires the most. With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, that dream has become a reality with Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1—out January 8 on Capitol Records.

“I realized I hadn’t ever heard a Thanksgiving song or Thanksgiving music,” said Rector, “and I felt like everyone has an emotional connection and a lot of memories around Thanksgiving, just like they do Christmas, and it felt like a good opportunity to try to connect to that. It honestly just felt odd that I hadn’t ever heard someone try to do that, and I figured I’d give it a shot.”

Across twelve of the Gibb Brothers beloved songs reborn, the album features collaborations with Alison Krauss, Brandi Carlile, David Rawlings, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch, Jason Isbell, Jay Buchanan, Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Olivia Newton-John, Sheryl Crow and Tommy Emmanuel. In advance of the release, “Words of a Fool,” featuring Grammy Award-winning Jason Isbell, is now available.

Additionally, Rector announced his Christmas album, A Ben Rector Christmas, out November 13th. You can pre-save the album at https://ffm.to/abenrectorchristmas.

Known for their smooth, brother-like harmonies, BlackHawk was originally made up of trio Henry Paul (lead vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar), Dave Robbins (harmony vocals, keyboard) and the late Van Stephenson (harmony vocals, electric guitar). Recording Just About Right gave Paul and Robbins the chance to reunite with their original backing band from the 90s, performing again alongside Bobby Huff (percussion) and Dale Oliver (lead guitar).

The new single was written by Thomas Rhett alongside Rhett Akins, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley and Parker Welling. The song infuses inspiration from classic country songs and whip-smart storytelling to breed a fresh new take on a country state of mind.

Paul explains that this reunion “made for a very memorable musical moment. Many of the songs we chose were personal favorites from our early records spanning nearly a decade.” Fans will recognize top hits including “Goodbye Says It All,” “Every Once in a While,” “I Sure Can Smell the Rain,” “That’s Just About Right” and 18 more of the band’s applauded tracks. Parker McCollum Hollywood Gold

The six-track EP features Parker’s breakout debut, “Pretty Heart,” and the title song inspired by the name of a racehorse that his grandfather bought. The name seemed too good not to be a song title, according to Parker.

Terry McBride Rebels and Angels

Terry (formerly of McBride & the Ride) co-wrote the title track with Chris Stapleton and recruited Patty Loveless as his duet partner on the song. Another highlight: Delbert McClinton guesting on “Went For One”.

The Springs share family recipe for holiday treat reindeer bait So, for this holiday season they have decided to share a little bit of their family traditions in the form of a yummy treat, Reindeer Bait. “The holiday season, for us, is all about time spent with family. We bake some of the best family recipes passed down for generations. There are so many memories we cherish (and new ones to make) around the oven, and at our tables.” For more recipes, home decor diy ideas, and music follow them on their socials at TheSpringsBand.

Although they both grew up in Alabama, Holly Helms and Stewart Halcomb of The Springs first met playing the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. “Up before me was this girl. She sounded great. She was beautiful. I instantly knew I had to talk to her,” says Stewart. Little did they know they would become partners, offstage and on, amassing over one million streams across platforms, and opening for stars like Florida Georgia Line, Kelly Clarkson, Reba, Little Big Town, Eric Church, Alan Jackson, and many more. When it comes to The Springs, the only real surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner. “It took three or four years before we became a duo,” explains Stewart. “We didn’t pursue anything initially but the more we dated, we realized that we made a great team,” details Holly, “We each have our strengths, and when we put them together, people in the industry noticed.” Once together, there was no stopping them. Their live shows began to endear them to a rapidly growing fan base; they have made regular appearances at CMA Music Festival; charted on the Billboard Country Chart with their latest release, “Old Fashioned,” hitting #33; and their albums have landed on top 10 lists on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Music. But perhaps most importantly, the two are now married. “We got engaged at the Bluebird, right where we met,” smiles Stewart, “I was able to get her parents and my parents there on both sides of the stage. It was magical.” Several years on, they are strong as ever, with new music coming in the spring, a tour in the works, and more. “God has truly blessed us in so many ways. We are so thankful for the success we’ve had thus far, and are so excited to see what happens next,” says Holly, “The best part is we get to do it with our best friend, and the person we love the most.” The happily married duo have been doing what a lot of other musicians have been doing this year, taking this time and putting it in to their family and finding ways to stay connected with their fans at the same time. Which happens to be their affinity for all things cooking, baking and DIY.

Remembering Billy Joe Shaver Imagine you’ve been writing songs for almost 20 years and you’re at the end of your rope, ready to throw in the towel, when you get a message on your phone that says “trim this and I’ll record it on my next album” and then Billy Joe Shaver is singing a song he started and wants you to finish it. It all started when I had gone to one of Billy’s concerts when he came to Nashville with a friend of mine, who was also a friend of Billy’s. He was going to introduce us, but Billy wasn’t feeling good after the show and didn’t see anyone. I bought his autobiography at the show that night. Billy was a big boxing fan and wrote in his autobiography how much he admired heavyweight contender, Earnie Shavers. Just by chance, prior to becoming a songwriter, I was a prize-fighter and was in the ring with Earnie in 1983. I was able to put Billy and Earnie on the phone together for, what Billy called, “a great conversation.” At the next concert, the crowd was so packed, that Billy Joe actually tapped me on the shoulder so that he could pass to go backstage. I was prepared for just such a moment and put a note in his pocket and told him that it was the phone number for Earnie Shavers. Billy Joe called him and then called me and that started our friendship. Billy and I would swap phone calls and text messages, talking about boxing and songwriting. Before I met him at the Factory, he suggested we write a song together about a boxer. This is when I slipped pass security and confronted Billy back stage somewhat of how he did Waylon. Pictured is my son’s guitar, the one I used convincing security I was in Billy Joe Shaver’s band to get back stage when he was performing at The Factory, in Franklin, TN, for Music City Roots. I walked up to Billy and put 3 songs in his shirt pocket and said “you promised to write a song with me and I’m going to hold you to it”. It took 2 years, but Billy Joe Shaver finally called. Billy would later tell me the story behind the song. He said “I had a fight with the devil last night and didn’t think I was going to make it, but I did. I asked Jesus to get me through this just one more time.” The next morning, when Billy woke up, he sat on the foot of his bed and started writing the song, entitled “Fight with the Devil”. Billy wanted to use a boxing analogy for the song, of fighting the devil and winning, so he sang me a verse and a chorus in a phone message in 2018. I worked on my part of the song, mixing my lyrics with his, and sent him an email with the possible song. He wrote back:

validation of 20 years, and equal to winning a Grammy. Over the years, we would talk many times, swapping stories of our bar-room brawls and close calls, always hanging up the phone laughing. Just before midnight, Friday night (October 27, 2020), Billy called from the hospital to say, “when I get out, I’m going to push your songs and help you”. Billy always ended his calls saying, “I love you, brother.” I want people to know the Billy Joe Shaver off stage, always pulling for the little guy and the unknown songwriter like me. “Just be yourself in life and in your lyrics”, he would say. Byline: Ken Boutwell (www.kenboutwell.com) Billy Joe Shaver, the outlaw-country music pioneer who wrote some of the genre’s greatest songs, died Wednesday in Waco, Texas, after suffering a stroke. He was 81. Connie Nelson, a friend of Shaver’s, confirmed his death to Rolling Stone. “Billy Joe Shaver is among the greatest troubadours in American music history,” said Kyle Young, CEO, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. “He spoke in poetry, and he lived his life like he wrote his songs, with poignant hilarity, chuckling sadness, and the wisdom of a dust-bitten sage. Most every line he wrote rings with truth and beauty, but the one I’m thinking of today is, ‘You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.’” “October 28th, I lost one of my greatest songwriting friends, Billy Joe Shaver. It’s a sad day and I’m just so torn between raising hell and lowering heaven a little bit. I felt it all the way from Nashville to Waco when he passed. I just go from looking back on our wonderful memories together to tears, then back to memories again. I have a lot to say about Billy Joe Shaver. He’s written so many songs, and I’m so glad I got to write a few of them with him. The whole songwriting community has suffered a huge loss today and most importantly the fans of country music. Billy was one of a kind, he wasn’t like anyone else. When he loved, he loved hard and I loved him right back. I just can’t find the words right now. Billy, he never had any trouble finding the right words when it came to a song, he was a master. Billy’s on his way to heaven and I’m just so glad I got to spend some of his life and some of my life together. I miss you already, my friend. Adios.” – Tanya Tucker

“GREAT, LETS SPLIT IT. IF THATS ALRIGHT WITH YOU GOD BLESS YOU AND FAMILY”

Shaver’s debut album, Old Five and Dimers Like Me (1973), contained many songs noted for being performed by other artists such as David Allan Coe and Waylon Jennings. When I Get My Wings (1976) included “Ain’t No God In Mexico” (also a hit for Waylon Jennings). Gypsy Boy (1977) included “Honky Tonk Heroes” and “You Asked Me To”. Shaver also wrote numerous songs for artists such as Patty Loveless and Willie Nelson.

He approved my lyrics, and liked what I added, but his declining health kept us from getting into a studio to cut it. For me, as a songwriter, that was

In 2019, Shaver received the Poet’s Award from the Academy of Country Music to honor his achievements in songwriting.

BMI Salutes Its Top Songwriters for the 2020 BMI Country Awards BMI paid tribute to the best in songwriting for its 68th Annual BMI Country Awards. The top songwriters, publishers and administrators of the previous year’s most-performed Country songs were celebrated across BMI’s digital and social channels. Major award winners for Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year were also announced. To honor these achievements, BMI created a special page on its website where fans can watch video messages, listen to award-winning music and learn more about their favorite Country songwriters. The special page also includes an exclusive video feature from BMI Icon Dolly Parton in conversation with some of our award-winning songwriters. For more information on BMI’s top country songwriters, go to bmi.com/country2020. Each year, BMI celebrates its Country Awards by honoring the best and brightest writers in the genre. This year, the legendary country music superstar and BMI Icon Dolly Parton is joining the celebration to honor our creative family! Dolly has written some of the world’s most beloved hits, which have amassed over 22 million performances, and has received 36 BMI songwriting awards. Her career has truly inspired and influenced countless songwriters. In honor of our awards and her upcoming book, Songteller, Dolly joins us for a personal conversation with seven of our award-winning BMI songwriters who discuss their favorite Dolly songs, her impact on the art and craft of songwriting, and just how much she means to them. “The BMI Country Awards are always the pinnacle of our year, and we look forward to this time when we are able to applaud our creators,” says Clay Bradley, VP, Creative Nashville. “To celebrate the most successful songs in our genre, our songwriters, publishers, and our community is a huge honor. This year has been a challenge for all of Music City, but this community has adapted beautifully and supported one another so unfailingly. Though this ceremony may look different, BMI is as proud as ever to once again honor the most performed songs of the year.” The in-demand award for Songwriter of the Year was given to hitmaker Ross Copperman, who received this honor for the fourth time. He penned six of the year’s most performed songs, including “Catch,” “Living,” “Love Ain’t,” “Love Someone,” “Tip of My Tongue,” and “What She Wants Tonight.” The clever, classic country break-up song “Whiskey Glasses,” co-written by Ben Burgess, was awarded Song of the Year, nabbing Burgess his first BMI Country Award. The song has been certified three times platinum and was a multi-week number one single at country radio. The song also topped Billboard’s year-end charts (both Hot Country and Airplay) as the number one Country song of 2019. Warner Chappell received the coveted Publisher of the Year designation for the third year in a row. The publishing powerhouse represented 21 of the previous year’s top 50 songs, including Song of the Year “Whiskey Glasses,” “The Bones,” “God’s Country,” “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “10,000 Hours,” and “Good As You.” BMI also celebrated the songwriters and publishers of the 50 most-performed Country songs of the previous year. This year’s group of honorees includes 20 first-time BMI Country award recipients, who have amassed over 19 million song performances collectively.

2020 Ascap Country Music Awards The Nashville music community’s resilient spirit was on full display as ASCAP honored the writers and publishers of country music’s biggest songs of the past year at the 58th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards. Held November 9-12 across all @ascap social media handles, our first-ever virtual Awards brought fans, friends and the industry along for the ride as our winners shared exclusive photos, videos, acceptance speeches and a few surprises. Superstar songwriter Ashley Gorley and Warner Chappell Music further cemented their legacies, earning Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year (respectively) for the eighth time; Josh Osborne, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi - the four songwriters behind Song of the Year “One Man Band” - are also longtime ASCAP Country Music Awards vets. But the diversity of our winning songwriters, which this year included veteran pop songwriters crossing over to the country charts, and 11 songwriters winning for the first time, was also a testament to the incredible expansion of the country songwriting community, and country music in general.

54th Annual CMA awards: The Heart of Country Remains True In a year like no other, “The 54th Annual CMA Awards” brought the Country Music community together, live, for the first time in months to celebrate the very best in the genre. In a night filled with riveting performances, heartfelt speeches and emotional tributes, Country Music’s Biggest Night™ proved, once again, that even in the toughest of times, the heart of Country remains true. Eric Church, performing “Hell of a View,” was awarded the night’s top honor of CMA Entertainer of the Year, a first for the artist. “If there was ever a year not to win...” Church laughed as he took the stage to accept the night’s ultimate trophy. “This year, at least for me, has been about loss – loss of life, loss of playing shows, loss of freedom, loss of kids being in school... And you know what the win is? The win is we all were here tonight, together as Country music – in person, live and I believe this, I really believe this: It’s gonna be music that brings us out of this. That is the one thing that’s gonna save the world. Politicians are about division; music is about unity.” Before leaving the stage, the stunned entertainer added as a rallying call, “And I promise you, it’s gonna take everyone in this room to unite.” Now six studio albums into his career, the North Carolinian always approaches things differently. Whether playing back-to-back nights in nearly 30 cities on his 2019 Double Down Tour or pushing himself to new creative limits with his recording process, Church has steadily amassed a faithful congregation – the Church Choir – since 2006’s release of “How ‘Bout You.” Many of those fans took to social media to congratulate the star, with an outpouring of comments proclaiming, “Congratulations Chief!” And it was those fans he was speaking to in the press conference following the awards show. “When you go to a concert and your favorite artist plays your favorite song, and you throw your arm around the person next to you, you don’t worry about whether he’s a Republican or a Democrat, whether he’s pro-life or pro-choice. You’re in that moment and you’re pulling on the rope the same way. I think what we’re missing right now in America is more of the stuff that unites us versus what divides us,” Church shared. “I swear — it’s going to be music that saves us… It’s going to be about how we do it, and how we do it responsibly, and how we show that this is how we’re gonna leave COVID in the dust.” Maren Morris, performing “The Bones,” was the night’s biggest winner, taking home three awards for CMA Single, Song and Female Vocalist of the Year. Luke Combs took home two awards for CMA Album and Male Vocalist of the Year. NashvilleMusicGuide.com

With an audience full of the biggest names in Country Music, safety was the top priority throughout the event’s production. “It was a privilege to bring the Country Music community together tonight,” says Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “We have worked tirelessly over the past few months to develop a safe environment that would allow us to deliver a show our fans have come to expect. We have followed all protocols established by the CDC, local health authorities and creative unions to ensure the safety of our staff, our crew and our artists at every turn. Every single person was tested prior to entering our footprint, with many individuals being tested repeatedly out of an abundance of caution. Our process enabled us to catch any positive test results immediately and before any of those individuals ever stepped foot into the venue. I am grateful for the grace and the patience shown to us during this process and to those individuals that were unable to join us tonight, you were greatly missed and we wish you and your families the very best.” Trahern added, “I am so proud to be a part of this community. It has been a very difficult year with many of us having suffered tremendous loss. My hope is that with the help of our incredible community of artists, we were able to shine a bit of light into the world through the magic of Country Music.” Jason Aldean, Brothers Osborne, Dierks Bentley and Ashley McBryde kicked off the night with a special collaboration honoring the late Charlie Daniels. Having felt the loss of many

legends this year, the show also honored Country greats Kenny Rogers and Joe Diffie with tributes from Little Big Town and Jon Pardi, respectively. Hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker took the stage for a breathtaking collaboration of Mac Davis’ “In the Ghetto,” a tribute to the Country legend and three-time CMA Awards host. You could also hear a pin drop when McBryde took the stage to perform “One Night Standards,” while Rucker brought the feel-good vibes with his chart-topping “Beers & Sunshine.” Proudly honoring Country Music Hall of Fame trailblazer and 1975 CMA Awards co-host Charley Pride with the CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, Jimmie Allen took the stage for an emotional introduction followed by a surprise performance of “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” with Pride. Old Dominion took viewers back to 1980, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic film “Urban Cowboy,” performing Johnny Lee’s “Looking For Love.” Continuing the tradition of one-of-a-kind performances, “The 54th Annual CMA Awards” delivered the world television premiere of Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s No. 1 single “10,000 Hours,” captured remotely at Los Angeles’ famed Hollywood Bowl. Also, performing off-site, Keith Urban treated viewers to an intimate performance of “God Whispered Your Name” from his native homeland, Australia, dedicating his performance to frontline workers. Other highlights included Lambert delivering her

latest hit single “Settling Down” while Combs also took the stage for a stellar performance of “Cold As You.” Ingrid Andress made her CMA Awards performance debut with a spectacular and tearful rendition of her top hit “More Hearts Than Mine.” Thomas Rhett featuring host McEntire and Chris Tomlin filled the room with inspiration, while Chris Stapleton performed a stripped-back version of his latest single “Starting Over” with Morgane Stapleton. Pearce and Lady A’s Charles Kelley performed a soulful rendition of “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” Rounding out the evening, Kelsea Ballerini, Gabby Barrett featuring Charlie Puth and Brothers Osborne all wowed the audience with one-of-a-kind performances.
