Editor’s Notes Nashville Music Guide is wrapping up another year of publiation and we are honored to say that after 24 years we are still providing promotions to artists, musicians and writers to Music Row and beyond. Our team were able to attend numerous events throughout this year ranging from album releases, showcases, seminars, festivals, conferences, tour stops, grand openings, sneak previews and so much more. We are always grateful to all those in the industry that reach out to share their news and allow us to be a part of their continued success. The music industry, at least in Nashvile, has always been a family and we are honored to be a part of it. Summer tours are over, awards season is upon the industry with some already announced like the CMA, SESAC, BMI and ASCAP Country award, which we have highlighted in this issue. Big congrats to Ashley McBryde on her Best New Artist win! For many artists that break before next year for the holidays is much needed. It is a time to relax, rejuveniate and spend time with ones that bring joy to their lives. To kickoff this holiday season, what’s better than a few new and some traditional holiday tunes and performances. In this issue we have highlighted several holiday events and albums to get you in the spirit. As well as a list of gifts and charitable giving back ideas. Tis the season for giving and thinking of others, the arts - whether it be music or artisans work can be such an uplifting gift. Bobby Helms Jingle Bell Rock “This Special Nashville Edition is the latest release by Country Rewind Records distributed by Select-O-Hits. The tracks were originally recorded in the early 1980s at Doc’s Studio in Hendersonville, TN, and were produced by Charlie Ammerman, who at the time was also Helms’ manager. Ernie Haase + Signature Sound put a little jazz into new Christmas album A Jazzy Little Christmas Highlights Quartet’s Faultless Harmonies
musicians who know the art form and who could steer the ship and help us vocally get to where we wanted to go was something that I’ll always look back on as one of the highlights of my career.” Billy Stritch has a pedigree in jazz circles that matches that of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound in Gospel music. Texas-born Stritch is the former music director for Tony Bennett and Liza Minelli among others, and is regarded as a top-tier jazz pianist. He is also no stranger to country music: with Nashville songwriter Sandy Knox, he cowrote the 1994 Grammy-award winning song, “Does He Love You,” recorded by Reba McEntire featuring Linda Davis.
Story by Preshias Harris Dedicated musicians all seem to have two things in common. They feel the need to stretch themselves creatively and they want to give back, particularly to those in greatest need. Take for example Ernie Haase + Signature Sound, the popular and highly respected Southern Gospel Quartet that has released more than twenty albums and numerous DVDs, often featuring other Christian artists. Their new album showcases a new side to their talent while maintaining the faultless harmonies and faith-based motivation that have made them global fan-favorites and multiple award winners. A Jazzy Little Christmas sees the quartet moving from their comfort zone of a Nashville studio to New York City to produce their first Holiday album in ten years. The group also jumped at the chance to include a charitable organization to benefit from the album. I sat down with Ernie Haase to talk about the new album, and I wanted to know what was his favorite thing about putting this album together. “It was being able to go outside the box for us,” said Haase. “Every record we’ve ever recorded has been here in Music City. The musicians here are excellent. But with this Jazzy Little Christmas, we wanted it to be authentic, and to be authentic you’ve got to have real jazz musicians to play. One afternoon, we met a fellow by the name of Billy Stritch who plays at Birdland Jazz Club and we got a conversation going and we just threw it out there. We said, ‘Hey, would you like to help co-produce a record for us?’ So being able to record those songs with true NashvilleMusicGuide.com 10
‘Giving back’ is an important part of the music business for Haase. “Our publicist came to us and said, ‘Hey, this New York thing keeps running, we’ve got an opportunity to partner with New York Cares and their Winter Wishes project,’ and we said, ‘Absolutely!’” Haase recalled. “That’s a great organization and we’re so happy that they were inclined to partner with us. So it’s a mutual love and respect and we hope we can bring some glad tidings and some joy not only to people who listen to the record but also to all the people that they’ll reach out to.” Winter Wishes is a program developed by the charity New York Cares to fulfill the wishes of low-income children, teens, families and seniors who may not otherwise receive a holiday gift. A Jazzy Little Christmas includes fourteen tracks beginning with a medley of “Happy Holiday” / ”It’s the Holiday Season” and wrapping up with another medley, “Peace on Earth” / “Silent Night.” In between are the quartet’s unique interpretations of Christmas favorites such as “O Holy Night,” “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” and “We Three Kings.” Additionally, there are two Ernie Haase originals, “Christmas in Manhattan” and “Sometimes I Wonder.” The album, released via Gaither Music Group, is available now at http://store.gaither.com/ and at Amazon.com, CBD.com and LifeWay.com. Give a little Christmas: Gift of Giving Back Spotlight
Every winter we hear a lot of talk about the “season of giving” and we rush around buying and wrapping pretty new things for our family and friends. Our debit cards sigh as we put them back in our wallets at the end of a long day. But what about the folks who don’t have the ability to buy those gifts? I never had much growing up, but we never did without. As an adult, I have climbed above that poverty line and my kids have much more than they need, but I know how it felt to pinch pennies, cut corners, even pay a bill late in order to buy a small gift for my kids. Those years while we were building our life without support were harder than I hope they ever know. It was during those years that Give A Little Christmas was born. My best friend and fellow editor, Krys, was interviewing a friend for our previous magazine when he mentioned Santa Claus. He said he had always wanted to give presents to homeless children with his long white beard and his rosycheeked wife. Krys ran with it and helped Glenn and Dottie Tubb start making plans. I will never forget our first event. Joey doesn’t climb out of bed easily and he had a particularly rough fall, recovering from a crushed hand. I had lost a lot of my odd jobs to his physical therapy and we had all been in a bit of a funk. That morning I told the boys
that we had to go sing for a bunch of kids and help Santa give them presents. I still have never seen Joey jump out of bed so quickly.
Our boys came alive when they met Santa and Mrs. Claus. They immediately went to work wrapping, distributing and helping however they could. Joey kept serving the Clauses plates of cookies and cups of milk. They glowed. That was the day I finally understood the spirit of giving, as it illuminated my children. Over the last seven years, Give A Little Christmas (GAL for short) has changed and grown into a blossoming 501c3. Glenn and Dottie had to retire for health reasons, I became the assistant director and our boys eventually learned the truth about the North Pole: it’s actually Southern. Elves are frequently long-haired teenage boys with slight drawls who look very cute in their fuzzy red hats. GAL serves parts of Wilson, Davidson and Rutherford counties, collecting and distributing toys for families who rarely qualify for any other assitance. We service families with sudden life emergencies of all sizes from inclome loss due to totaled cars and unexpected injury expenses to big life emergenices like severe health problems, house fires, domestic violence and more. This Christmas we already have over 160 kids signed up.

Not all families can attend, but those who do receive large black bags out the back door while the kids are entertained. This way they wake to toys under their tree without us having to slide down every chimney. 4. Adopt! We welcome companies and organizations to adopt entire families. We especially like to adopt them out when the families have special-needs children whose gifts are rarely in the donation bins.

His new single, “A Road and a Radio” is an uptempo country rocker that does exactly what the title says. All proceeds from ticket sales went to benefit the Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center for continued research of cures to fight against cancer. The lineup also included Curb recording artist Mo Pitney and the talents of rising singer-songwriters Allie Colleen, Ashlyn Grayce, and Charly Reynolds. CLASSIC COUNTRY NEWS: Rex Allen - America’s Last Singing Cowboy is the latest release by Country Rewind Records and the first in a new series, referred to as the Western Heritage Series which will also feature The Sons of the Pioneers and Tex Ritter. Rex Allen was a multimedia star before the term ‘multimedia’ was coined. He found fame as a singer, a songwriter, a Western movie star, a television actor and (in later life) as a narrator of Disney movies and TV shows. The new music is also available for streaming and download on all digital music platforms. Some of the tracks on this album were even a revelation to Rex Allen, Jr. “I had never heard “Blue Dream” before,” he said. “Not only had I never heard that track before, but I had never heard him sing it. I worked with dad on around 200 performances in my early life. The same goes for ‘The Blue Light Waltz.’ I’d never heard that song before, either! They are just gorgeous pieces of Western material with the Sons of the Pioneers singing background vocals. Bradley was inducted in the “Non-Performer” category, which is awarded every third year in rotation with the “Recording and/or Touring Musician” and “Songwriter” categories.

PERFORMANCE NEWS: Blackberry Smoke has released a new live performance video of their hit song “One Horse Town”. Following a diagnosis of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Ava underwent 30 days of inpatient chemo and was blessed with good news confirming she was in remission although the road to recovery was far from over. Thankfully, Paige is back home but remains on an eight-month chemo infusion program where she has weekly hospital visits for an infusion and does the rest of the treatments at home. Dwight Yoakam Receives BMI President’s Award at 2019 BMI Country Awards BMI presented its 2019 BMI Country Awards last night, honoring the prolific musical career of BMI President’s Award recipient Dwight Yoakam, as well as the Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year. The 67th annual event, which is the genre’s oldest awards ceremony, also celebrated the songwriters and publishers of the mostperformed country songs of the previous year. BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill hosted the ceremony at the Company’s office in Nashville, along with Jody Williams, BMI Vice President, Creative, Nashville. Yoakam, who was named this year’s BMI President’s Award honoree, joins an elite list of songwriters including Kenny Chesney, P!nk, Harlan Howard, Brooks & Dunn, Pitbull, Adam Levine, Billy Sherrill, Toni Braxton, and others who have distinctly and profoundly influenced the music industry. During the evening, rising country star Jon Pardi, supergroup The Highwomen, with guitar aficionado Jason Isbell, and country purist Margo Price with the legendary Bob Weir, paid musical tribute to Yoakam. Pardi brought his signature twang for an old-school rendition of “Guitars, Cadillacs,” while Margo Price and Bob Weir gave a rocking outlaw version of “Fast as You.” Finally, Nashville’s hottest supergroup, The Highwomen, serenaded the crowd with the perennial Yoakam favorite “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere,” with Isbell leading the band on guitar. Early in the evening, Mike O’Neill and Jody Williams presented Del and Dane Bryant with the inaugural Evergreen Award for “Rocky Top,” written by BMI writers Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The Evergreen Award recognizes those one-of-a-kind songs that have left an unforgettable imprint on our lives and an enduring legacy through the years. In addition to the presentation of the award, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder performed a rousing bluegrass version of the song. Senator Lamar Alexander, BMI Icon Dolly Parton, and two-time Superbowl winner and former UT quarterback Peyton Manning contributed videos paying homage to the song’s place in the history of country music, as well as within the state of Tennessee. The coveted Songwriter of the Year award was presented to first-time winner Nicolle Galyon and third-time winner Ross Copperman, who are each responsible for four of this year’s award-winning songs. Galyon is the first female to be named BMI Country Songwriter of the Year since Taylor Swift took the title in 2010. Her writing credits include Lee Brice’s “Boy,” Keith Urban’s “Coming Home,” Lady Antebellum’s “Heartbreak” and Dan + Shay’s “Tequila,” which was named 2019 BMI Song of the Year later in the evening. 2019 Ascap Country Music Awards With a star-studded lineup rivaling Broadway’s brightest neon lights, the 57th annual ASCAP Country Music Awards celebrated the industry’s biggest names on Monday, November 11 in Nashville. The evening was full of milestone moments for ASCAP’s family of country songwriters and publishers. Hitmaker Ashley Gorley cemented his place among country music’s greats, earning his unprecedented seventh ASCAP Country Music Songwriter of the Year honor. Pop and R&B songwriter Steven Battey won Song of the Year for his very first country hit, Luke Combs’s “One Number Away.” And for the seventh year in a row, Warner Chappell Music was named ASCAP Country Music Publisher of the Year for shepherding a record-setting number of country songs to the top of the charts. The stars came out to pay homage to their comrades in song. Kelsea Ballerini and Little Big Town were both on hand to honor songwriter Hillary Lindsey (“Girl Crush,” “Jesus, Take the Wheel”) with the ASCAP Global Impact Award. Brett Young, who earned our Songwriter-Artist of the Year Award in 2018, was on hand to pass the torch to this year’s winners, Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen of Old Dominion, and actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen (also an ASCAP member) added a touch of Hollywood as they presented the ASCAP Vanguard Award to their friends, Brothers Osborne. From the opening performance of “Tequila” (written by Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers and songwriter Jordan Reynolds) to Gorley, Bentley and Jon Nite’s moving rendition of “Living,” the 2019 ASCAP Country Music Awards were defined by spectacular performances. But in an evening full of unforgettable live music, a clear highlight was a tribute to the great Randy Travis, winner of the ASCAP Founders Award. Women in Country Music united for a historic, opening performance at “The 53rdAnnual CMA Awards” with a nearly nine-minute medley that saluted 87-year-old country queen Loretta Lynn, who looked on from a seat in the audience, as Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman sang Lynn’s hit “You’re Looking at Country” and the Highwomen quartet delivered “Your Good Girl Is Gonna Go Bad.”

Garth Brooks took the night’s biggest honor, Entertainer of the Year, and Album of the Year went to Maren Morris. In collecting her first female vocalist trophy from the CMA, 31-year-old Musgraves said, “I feel that the female energy, the female spirit is really important right now. I think the earth needs it right now.” Earlier in the night, Kacey Musgraves won for music Video of the Year for “Rainbow,” while Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus won Musical Event of the Year for their remix of “Old Town Road.” Blake Shelton took the stage to win the first award of the night for Single of the Year, “God’s Country.”Vocal Group of the Year went to Old Dominion. Miranda Lambert had a spark in her eye while singing “It All Comes Out in the Wash”. We were treated to Pink and Chris Stapleton doing “Love Me Anyway”. It was one of those performances that remind you why awards shows can be so awesome. It got a much deserved standing ovation. Old Dominion performed “One Man Band.” Later on in the show they won their second Vocal Group of the Year award. Luke Combs was all dressed-up when he accepted Song of the Year for “Beautiful Crazy”, but when he returned later to sing “Beer Never Broke My Heart” he was in short sleeves and a cap. And then the suit came back when he won Male Vocalist of the Year. Kelsea Ballerini went solo with her guitar while performing “Homecoming Queen?”. And then she launched into

The Lady Antebellum and Halsey collaboration featured stripped-down versions of Lady A’s “What If I Never Get Over You”, and Halsey’s “Graveyard”. They sounded great together. Then the guitars came out and the volume turned up when Brothers Osborne joined Brooks & Dunn for “Hard Workin’ Man”…. (and women too!) As a night dedicated to women in country music seemed right for a pregnant MAREN MORRIS to perform her song “Girl”. She also won Album of the Year for “Girl”. Blake Shelton did a nice thing while performing “God’s Country”. He showcased his fiddle player Jenee Fleenor, which was cool for two reasons.

Tracy Lawrence’s 14th Annual Mission Possible Turkey Fry & Concert Country Music Legend and award-winning philanthropist, Tracy Lawrence, will soon be warming up the fryers and gathering his friends for the 14th Annual MISSION:POSSIBLE Turkey Fry at Nashville Rescue Mission. Hang Out Music Festival (Gulf Shores, AL) Hangout takes music festivalling to the beach with a ocean view on the golden sands of Gulf Shores. Country Roots Campout (Robertson County, TN) How’s about a weekend of Country Roots music and canoes in Tennessee? The Country Roots Campout at the Canoe The Red River property about 35 miles North of Nashville, near the Kentucky border. Just about 10 minutes from Clarksville. Camping is free with all tickets. RV spots can be rented directly from the venue. They even have indoor restrooms and a laundry room.. The diversity of performances is what makes this festival so memorable. That, and its exciting location. Headlining acts to play the fest have included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem, Neil Young, Green Day, Kiss, Pearl Jam, The Cure, and many more.
