SYNOPSIS PROLOGUE Scotland. Three witches appear from the mist. They encounter young Macbeth and young Banquo. The witches mark Macbeth for the fate of the kingship.

ACT I After a battle, Macbeth and Banquo, leaders of the Scottish army, meet the same three witches, who prophesy the future. They address Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland and tell Banquo that he will be the father of kings. The two men try to learn more, but the witches vanish. Messengers arrive with news that Duncan, the current King of Scotland, has made Macbeth Thane of Cawdor. The first part of the witches’ prediction has come true.

In Macbeth’s castle, Lady Macbeth reads a letter from her husband telling her of the events that have just transpired. Duncan will soon arrive at the castle. When Macbeth enters, she tells him that they must kill the king. Duncan arrives, and Lady Macbeth invites him to spend the night. Macbeth has a vision of a dagger, then leaves to commit the murder. On his return, he tells his wife how the act has frightened him. Macduff and Lady Macduff enter the scene. Macduff, a nobleman, discovers the king has been murdered. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth pretend to be horrified and join the others in condemning the crime.

Macbeth has become king. Duncan’s son, Malcolm, is suspected of having killed his father and has fled to England. Worried about the prophecy that Banquo’s children will rule, Macbeth and his wife now plan to kill him and his son, Fleance, as well. As Macbeth leaves to prepare the double murder, Lady Macbeth hopes that it will finally make the throne secure.

Outside the castle, assassins wait for Banquo, who appears with his son, warning him of strange forebodings.

Banquo is killed, but Fleance escapes.

Lady Macbeth welcomes the court to the banquet hall, where the guests are dancing. Macbeth hears news that Banquo is dead and his son has escaped. About to take a seat, Macbeth has a terrifying vision of the dead man. His wife is unable to calm her husband. The courtiers wonder about the king’s strange behavior.

Macbeth dances a soliloquy that illustrates his conflicting desire for power and his guilt over the recent murders. Duncan appears in Macbeth’s mind as he relives the treacherous act. Macbeth is engulfed by guilt.

— 20 Minute Intermission — ACT II Haunted by his murderous deeds, Macbeth demands more prophecies from the witches. Apparitions warn him to beware of Macduff, but assure him that “no man of woman born” can harm him and that he will be invincible until the surrounding forest of Birnam Wood marches on his castle. In another vision, he sees a procession of future kings, followed by Banquo. Horrified, Macbeth collapses. The witches disappear, leaving him on the ground, where his wife finds him. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth resolve to kill Macduff and his family.

Macduff and Lady Macduff dance a romantic duet and Macduff exits to lead the revolt against Macbeth. Lady Macduff is murdered by assassins.

Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking, haunted by the horrors of what she and her husband have done.

Meanwhile, Macbeth awaits the arrival of his enemies. He realizes that he will never live to a peaceful old age. Messengers bring news that Lady Macbeth has killed herself and that Birnam Wood appears to be moving. English soldiers appear, camouflaged with the forest’s branches. Macduff confronts Macbeth and tells him that he was not born naturally, but had a Caesarean birth. He kills Macbeth and proclaims Malcolm king of Scotland.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Cafe, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and, most recently, Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 24, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second pre-professional company of 35 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity.

LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minn., Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, N.Y.) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine.

SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty member, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Community Engagement, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations. During her nine years as Director of Education and Community Engagement, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company. While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s Community Engagement program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company, Community Engagement and School of Nashville Ballet.

TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States. Before joining the staff of Nashville Ballet in 2001, he served as the Ballet Master with the Moving Poets Theatre of Dance in Charlotte, NC. From 2003 to 2010, he was also Ballet Master for Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, a summer season company located in Asheville, NC. Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996.

ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance.

In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Community Engagement program, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS (CONT’D) SCOTT LEATHERS, Resident Lighting Designer Scott Leathers has served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Ballet since 1987. He has also served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Children’s Theatre since 2003, Kentucky Repertory Theatre (‘04-’08), Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Ballet Tennessee. He periodically serves as interim Lighting Director for the Ryman Auditorium. Mr. Leathers has designed lighting for theatre, opera, ballet and modern dance since 1981 to critical acclaim. His design experience includes work with the Nashville Repertory Theatre, Opera Omaha, Studio West Dance Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Theatre Craft, Stage One, American Negro Playwrights Theatre, Amun Ra Theatre, Musical Theatre Louisville, Karen Steele Dance Quintet, Ballet Omaha, Ballet Austin, Cumberland County Playhouse and Dollywood. He has also worked internationally with performing arts organizations such as Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp (TECS-Switzerland) and Ballet Manila (Philippines). He has also designed scenery for numerous productions including Nashville Ballet’s productions of Robin Hood, Postcards from the Boys, The Bell Witch, Harvest Home, Western Stars and Fête Champêtre.

KENJI BUNCH, Guest Composer Kenji Bunch has emerged as one of the most engaging, influential and prolific American composers of his generation. Hailed by the New York Times as “A Composer To Watch” and cited by Alex Ross in his seminal book The Rest Is Noise, Mr. Bunch’s unique blend of wit, exuberance, lyricism, unpredictable stylistic infusions and exquisite craftsmanship has brought acclaim from audiences, performers and critics alike. Mr. Bunch’s symphonic music has been performed by more than 40 orchestras and his genre-defying chamber works have been performed in premier venues on six continents. Mr. Bunch maintains an active career as a violist, and is widely recognized for performing his own groundbreaking works for viola. In the spring of 2011, he released a recording of his complete works for solo viola on Bulging Disc Records. A native of Portland, Oregon, Mr. Bunch studied at the Juilliard School, receiving his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in viola with Toby Appel and in composition with Robert Beaser.

ZENEBA BOWERS, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Artistic Director, Violin Zeneba Bowers earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music. She has served as concertmaster of Charleston Spoleto Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi (Spoleto, Italy) and the New World Symphony. She joined the Nashville Symphony in 1999 and became Assistant Principal Second Violin in 2001. Ms. Bowers founded ALIAS in 2002; the group quickly became a major element of Nashville’s classical music scene and garnered a Grammy nomination in 2011 for Best Small Ensemble Performance on its debut CD, Gabriela Lena Frank: Hilos, which she also co-produced. Under Ms. Bowers’ artistic leadership, ALIAS has received critical acclaim nationwide for the ensemble’s innovation, artistry, unique business model and groundbreaking programming.

CHRISTOPHER FARRELL, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Viola Violist Christopher Farrell has been a member of the Nashville Symphony since 1999. He received a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Dr. George Papich and a Master of Music degree from Indiana University as a student of Atar Arad. Other important teachers include Laura Altz and Connie Brouillette. As a member of ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Mr. Farrell can be heard on ALIAS albums Amorisms, Boiling Point, Music of Kenji Bunch and the Grammy-nominated album Gabriela Lena Frank: Hilos. In addition to performing with the Nashville Symphony and ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Mr. Farrell is an active studio musician and can be heard on numerous albums by an eclectic range of recording artists. Mr. Farrell’s compositions have been performed in ALIAS Chamber Ensemble season concerts at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and Nashville Symphony OnStage performances at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. In 2015, Mr. Farrell was awarded a Bonnaroo Works/ Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee Grant by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission for the creation and recording of Needle and Thread, Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp.

MELISSA ROSE, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Piano Melissa Rose has enjoyed a 30-year career as a collaborative pianist, performing internationally and throughout the United States.

Critics describe her as “powerfully musical” (Kansas City Star) and “an exceptional partner” (kcmetropolis.org). In addition to ALIAS, she appears regularly with Summerfest Concerts in Kansas City. As a pianist keenly interested in performing contemporary music, Ms. Rose has participated in numerous premieres and residencies with leading American composers. In the early post-Soviet period, she brought contemporary American music to audiences in Moscow and Kazan, Tatarstan, performing solo recitals and collaborating with Russian musicians in chamber music. More recently, she has recorded chamber works by leading contemporary composers on the Naxos, Centaur, Blue Griffin, Delos, Navona and Good Child Music labels. An Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Piano at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, she teaches collaborative piano and coaching both vocal and instrumental chamber music.

MATT WALKER, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Cello After two years as an English major at James Madison University, cellist Matt Walker transferred to Florida State University, where in 1991 he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music. After playing for three years with the Jacksonville Symphony and then five years with the Charleston Symphony, Mr. Walker won a position in the cello section in the Nashville Symphony in 1999. In 2002 he was one of the founding members of ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, appearing as a cellist and composer, as well as a bassist and guitarist.

The ensemble has garnered much critical acclaim locally and nationally for its artistry and adventurous programming, which has included world premieres of several of his own compositions. Mr. Walker is featured on ALIAS’ first CD, Gabriela Lena Frank: Hilos, released on Naxos’ American Classics label in 2011; he also co-produced the disc, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Small Ensemble Performance. As a composer, he has written many pieces which have been performed around the country and in Europe. Over years of working closely with many musicians in other genres (notably Lyle Lovett and Chet Atkins, as well as countless Nashville recording artists), much of his composition has become heavily influenced by swing, jazz and blues. In 2012, Mr. Walker was commissioned by Nashville Ballet, which premiered his Arabian Blues in May 2012 as part of the Emergence series.

That same month, Yo-Yo Ma premiered his cello duo Yo-Yo Joe. In the fall of 2012, Nashville Ballet’s performance of Arabian Blues in Emergence was recognized as a “Best of Nashville” work by the Nashville Scene.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Washington, D.C. | April 17-23, 2017 The Kennedy Center honors innovation and diversity in American ballet with the return of Ballet Across America. Placing artists at the center of the conversation as never before, the weeklong celebration explores new directions in the art form through programs curated by two of the biggest superstars in the ballet world: American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland and New York City Ballet Resident Choreographer and Soloist Justin Peck.
