The poem follows a mysterious raven that ultimately drives a heartbroken man into madness, particularly with the repetition of the word ‘nevermore,’ which reminds him of his loss.

“As a student reading The Raven for the first time, I was immediately struck by the pounding meter and internal rhyme. As you read you can almost hear a tune, and within the 18 stanzas lives a story so descriptive that, to me, it seemed it was meant to be a ballet. This is my interpretation of The Raven, inspired by Poe’s writing and the poem’s supernatural atmosphere that has dictated where my language of movement takes the dancers.”

LIZZIE BORDEN (CONT’D) SYNOPSIS Prologue: Lizzie is taken back in time by her ghosts and memories. We meet her father and stepmother and she remembers the jury at her trial. They tell her story.

Scene 1: As the ghosts and Lizzie continue their time journey, she is confronted by the memories of her community and its ghosts, including the reverend of the local church and the Borden family servant, Bridget.

Scene 2: Lizzie dances an elegy with herself as a young girl and the ghost of her real mother. She is visited by a frightening shadow person, who steals away her childhood.

Scene 3: Lizzie relives her mother’s funeral and the subsequent replacement of her mother by her stepmother.

Scene 4: The dark home: Lizzie dances a fractured song with her father and stepmother and relives a typical day in the Borden household.

Scene 5: Lizzie encounters ghosts of loving couples from her town and remembers her longing for a normal life, free of the extreme Victorian constraints of the Borden household. She is visited by a possible suitor, the reverend of the local church, but he is rebuffed by Lizzie’s father and stepmother.

Scene 6: Lizzie struggles with her anger toward her father and stepmother. The mysterious shadow person returns and introduces her to the axe and the idea that comes with it.

Scene 7: Lizzie’s friend Bridget takes her to church, where she finds comfort. There she finds the reverend and they dance a loving duet. Again, her father and stepmother enter and take away her chance of love.

Scene 8: Lizzie recalls some of her happiest moments at a dance held at her church. The community plays a popular Victorian parlor game, the hat dance, and in the midst of the revelry, the shadow person appears to whisk her back to the Borden household.

Scene 9: Lizzie relives the morning before the murders occurred, wrestling her demons and the axe.

Scene 10: Bridget discovers the murders and alerts the town.

Scene 11: Lizzie recalls the final verdict at her trial and remembers the tone of the rest of her life, living alone, albeit wealthy, in Fall River.

CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE “No one really knows what happened in Fall River, Mass. in August 1892, when Andrew Borden and his wife were found brutally axed to death in their home. Borden’s daughter, Lizzie, was subsequently accused, tried and acquitted. Whatever happened, it is a dark, fascinating story. After much research, I have come to my own conclusions.

“The ballet I have created takes place in the mind of Lizzie Borden, in her memories, and is a stream of consciousness fantasy based upon my own conclusions about what may have happened in the Borden household in 1892, and before.”

NASHVILLE BALLET LEADERSHIP, STAFF AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Cafe, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. In 2004, Mr. Vasterling received a Fulbright Scholarship that enabled him to work with three different companies in Argentina, paving the way for Nashville Ballet’s tour there a year later. His ballets have also been performed internationally in Asia as well as across the U.S. to great acclaim, including a debut appearance on stage at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in April 2017. Most recently, Mr. Vasterling was selected as one of the Fellows in residence for the 2017-18 academic year at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University, the first international institute devoted to the creation and academic study of ballet. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 25, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second pre-professional company of over 20 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity.

LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minn., Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, N.Y.) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine.

SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty member, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Community Engagement, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations. During her nine years as Director of Education and Community Engagement, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company. While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s Community Engagement program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company and Community Engagement.

TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States.

Before joining the staff of Nashville Ballet in 2001, he served as the Ballet Master with the Moving Poets Theatre of Dance in Charlotte, N.C. From 2003 to 2010, he was also Ballet Master for Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, a summer season company located in Asheville, N.C. Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996.

NASHVILLE BALLET LEADERSHIP, STAFF AND GUESTS ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance. In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Community Engagement program, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

DENISE EASON, Associate Ballet Master Denise Eason returned to Nashville after a 20-year residency in Hartford, Conn., where she was with the Hartford Ballet and, after retirement, an adjunct professor of dance at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. Mrs. Eason was a Nashville Ballet company dancer from 1989-1994, and she returned to Nashville Ballet in 2016 as a company teacher, coach and faculty member. Mrs. Eason moved to Connecticut to join the Hartford Ballet in 1994 under the direction of Kirk Peterson where she danced many principal and soloist roles by George Balanchine, Choo-San Goh and Peterson, to name a few. Among her favorites were Tall Girl Principal in Balanchine’s Rubies, Sanguinic and Choleric in Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Third Movement Principal Girl in Choo-San Goh’s In the Glow of the Night, Myrtha in Peterson’s Giselle, and Sugar Plum and Snow Queen in Peterson’s American Nutcracker. Prior to joining the Hartford Ballet, she danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Chautauqua Festival Company, Michigan Opera and Septime Webre Dance. Mrs. Eason has been a faculty member of academies affiliated with professional ballet companies, and she brings with her a career of more than 30 years of professional ballet and teaching experience.

SCOTT LEATHERS, Resident Lighting Designer Scott Leathers has served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Ballet since 1987. He has also served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Children’s Theatre since 2003, Kentucky Repertory Theatre (‘04-’08), Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Ballet Tennessee. He periodically serves as interim Lighting Director for the Ryman Auditorium. Mr. Leathers has designed lighting for theatre, opera, ballet and modern dance since 1981 to critical acclaim. His design experience includes work with the Nashville Repertory Theatre, Opera Omaha, Studio West Dance Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Theatre Craft, Stage One, American Negro Playwrights Theatre, Amun Ra Theatre, Musical Theatre Louisville, Karen Steele Dance Quintet, Ballet Omaha, Ballet Austin, Cumberland County Playhouse and Dollywood. He has also worked internationally with performing arts organizations such as Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp (TECS-Switzerland) and Ballet Manila (Philippines). He has also designed scenery for numerous productions including Nashville Ballet’s productions of Robin Hood, Postcards from the Boys, The Bell Witch, Harvest Home, Western Stars and Fête Champêtre.

CHRISTOPHER STUART, Guest Choreographer Christopher Stuart, originally from Sandy Hook, Conn., has always had a niche for choreographing. His vast experiences as a dancer and performer helped him articulate his choreographic voice through improvising and exploring different forms of movement. Mr. Stuart has created pieces for Nashville Ballet, NB2, Quixotic Fusion and Ballet Arkansas. In Nashville Ballet’s 2012 Emergence performance, he collaborated with ALIAS Chamber Ensemble and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. In 2012, he choreographed and staged Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s Macbeth. For the past four seasons, Mr. Stuart has created pieces for Nashville Ballet’s annual Ballet Ball with music performed by Holly Williams, Kellie Pickler, Clare Bowen, John Oates and Muddy Magnolias. For Nashville Ballet’s 2014 Attitude series, he created Under the Lights, a full-length work to the music of Johnny Cash performed by Sugar + The Hi-Lows about which ArtsNash said, “Stuart’s choreography proved to be a seamless blend of classical, modern and popular dance styles.” Mr. Stuart was a finalist in Ballet Arkansas’ inaugural Visions Choreographic Competition in 2014. In 2015, he choreographed a piece to the music of the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers. In May 2017, Nashville Ballet presented the world premiere of Mr. Stuart’s Seven Deadly Sins. Most recently, he was accepted as a choreographer at the National Choreographers Initiative in California, and received a Commission Initiative Grant from New York Choreographic Institute in 2017. Mr. Stuart has been dancing with Nashville Ballet for the last 14 years and has risen to the rank of principal.

NASHVILLE BALLET LEADERSHIP, STAFF AND GUESTS PHILIP FEENEY, Composer Philip Feeney is a pianist and composer, specializing in composing music for dance. He has written works for many companies, including several full-length ballets for Northern Ballet, including Dracula, Hamlet and Cinderella, and one act ballets for Cullberg Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rambert Dance Company with choreographer Didy Veldman. He has forged a longstanding collaboration with choreographer Michael KeeganDolan for Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, for whom he has written eight works, including Giselle and The Bull. Mr. Feeney is at present engaged on a new production of Beauty and the Beast for Milwaukee Ballet, to be choreographed

by Michael Pink, for whom he has previously written the critically acclaimed ballets, Peter Pan, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Mirror, Mirror. Mr. Feeney is currently musical director of Ballet Central and longstanding pianist at London Contemporary Dance School.

EMILY BOWLAND, Guest Musician Clarinetist Emily Wasson Bowland maintains an active career as a performer and teacher. An equally versatile performer on clarinet plus E-flat and bass clarinets, she enjoys an interesting and diverse career, both live and in the recording studio. Ms. Bowland currently holds the positions of Principal Clarinet of Orchestra Kentucky, 3rd/Bass Clarinet of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and she performs with the Nashville Opera Orchestra. As a soloist, she has appeared with Orchestra Kentucky and on recitals at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium and the Society of Composers, Inc. Ms. Bowland has been part of several recordings with the Nashville Symphony, including the release of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. She also performed in the world premiere of Trey Anastasio’s Time Turns Elastic with Orchestra Nashville, which was featured in Rolling Stone magazine. An enthusiastic supporter of contemporary music, Ms. Bowland is a core member of Nashville-based new music ensembles Intersection and Chatterbird. Ms. Bowland is active in the Nashville studio scene, having performed on many movie and video game soundtracks, as well as in recordings for publishing companies and solo artist projects. She can be heard on Jack White’s Grammy-nominated debut solo album, Blunderbuss. She is also featured in a recording with roots musician Pokey LaFarge as a part of the film soundtrack for The Lone Ranger (2013). Ms. Bowland holds a bachelor of music degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a master of music degree from the University of Southern California. Her major teachers have included Yehuda Gilad, Mitchell Lurie and Richie Hawley.

SARI DE LEON-REIST, Guest Musician Sari De Leon-Reist performs regularly with some of Nashville’s finest musicians and ensembles on stage and in the recording studio. She is a member of the Grammy-nominated Alias Chamber Ensemble. She plays with the Nashville Opera Orchestra and is a regular substitute for the Nashville Symphony. Ms. De Leon-Reist was a soloist with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and the Nexus Chamber Orchestra. In the popular realm, she can be heard on the recordings of Lady Antebellum, Kings of Leon, Faith Hill, Ben Folds, Train, Carrie Underwood and countless others.

Sari received her bachelors of music degree in cello performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Irene Sharp. Later, she received her Suzuki Certification through an intensive two-year pedagogy program at School for Strings in New York City, where she later joined the faculty. She was also formerly on the faculty of Mannes College of Music and The Childrens’ Orchestra Society of New York, as well as the Tennessee Governors School for the Arts and Lipscomb University. Ms. De Leon-Reist currently teaches at Blair School of Music.

ALESSANDRA VOLPI, Guest Musician Italian pianist Alessandra Volpi began her piano studies at the age of 4 under the direction of Maestro Gaeta in Carrara, Italy. She had her orchestral debut at age 10 and furthered her studies at the Livorno and Milan Conservatory in Italy. At 16, she was awarded a full tuition scholarship to continue her music education with Maestro Gary Amano of Utah State University. In April 2003, she was presented with the Robins Award as Talent of the Year by Utah State University and taught as a faculty member there for four years. Ms. Volpi has played concerts with various orchestras and performs extensively in the United States as well as in her native country of Italy. Her career has given her the opportunity to work and study with many legendary mentors such as Leon Fleisher, Stewart Gordon, Jerome Lowenthal, Olga Kern, Marina Lomazov, Norman Krieger, Charles Rosen, Mitzuko Uchida and Maestro Endre Hegedus in his native country of Hungary. In the past year, Ms. Volpi has participated in master classes at Carnegie Hall as well as the Piano Sonoma Festival at the Juilliard School in New York City. Ms. Volpi is currently working as a collaborative pianist at Belmont University and is the pianist for the Belmont University Opera. She has also been the rehearsal pianist for Nashville Ballet since 2014 as well as an avid collaborator with musicians of the Nashville Symphony and musicians and ensembles across Tennessee.
