Young ballerina Marie van Goethen dreamed of becoming a world famous dancer. She gave up her dreams to support her family as an artist’s model, yet still became one of the most famous dancers in the world as the subject of Edgar Degas’ bronze statue La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans. A note from the composer, Dr. David M. Bridges Nashville Ballet presents the charming children’s story of a young girl and her relationship to Degas as he chooses her to be the model for his famous sculpture.

The original commission called for a string quartet to provide the musical accompaniment and I added a clarinet because it is a very French instrument and this is, obviously, a very French themed ballet. The clarinet is, in fact, the primary sound in the musical score.

Paul Vasterling, the choreographer, was very helpful in providing clear ideas for the kinds of sounds he wanted for the 12 scenes in the ballet.

To construct the score, I used variations on two different short original melodies to represent the general moods and feelings of each scene and to give the audience a kind of audio signature that supported and elaborated the story’s characters and moods. I also had to keep in mind that the music needed to be accessible to children as Nashville Ballet performs it in many of their outreaches.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, 10 years after he began his association with the company.

He joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer and later served as a teacher, Ballet Master and choreographer. After several years of turnover in the Artistic Director position, Mr. Vasterling was hired for the job, a position he has held ever since. In the spring of 2010, at the board’s request, Mr. Vasterling took on the additional role of CEO for the ballet.

A choreographer with a deep affinity for music, Mr. Vasterling has created more than 40 works, ranging from classical, full-length story ballets to more contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists. His ballets have been performed from South America to Asia, to great acclaim.

Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, and has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Jiří Kylián, Lew Christensen and Twyla Tharp, among others. He has also encouraged company dancers who have shown an interest in choreography, giving them the same opportunity to create that he received from artistic directors.

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University and a Fulbright Scholar, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership, the company’s resources have grown by close to 300 percent and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 24, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish NB2, a pre-professional company of 35 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power, as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity. Mr. Vasterling also serves on the executive committee of Dance USA’s Board of Directors.

LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds, and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minnesota, Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine.

SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Outreach, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations.

During her nine years as Director of Education and Outreach, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company.

While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s educational outreach program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company, outreach and School of Nashville Ballet.

TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States, and before joining the staff of Nashville

Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996.

ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance. In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo & Juliet, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Education and Outreach Department, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

NICOLE KOENIG, School Dean Nicole Koenig danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for over a decade, performing numerous soloist and principal roles in ballets by Balanchine, Petipas, Choo San Goh, Lynne Taylor-Corbett and original roles

by Paul Vasterling. A passionate teacher, Ms. Koenig received her Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance in London in 2007 and attended the teacher’s seminar of Canada’s National Ballet School in 2008. Emphasizing anatomical correctness, musicality and artistry, Ms. Koenig’s philosophy fosters longevity and artistic success in her students’ careers. She has received an outstanding teacher award from the Tennessee Governor’s School as well as the Outstanding Dance Educator award from the Tennessee Association of Dance. She has coached dancers for Youth American Grand Prix, Boston International Ballet Competition and the Jackson International Ballet Competition. She has also coached principal couples in Nashville Ballet’s productions of Sleeping Beauty and Nashville’s Nutcracker.

SCOTT LEATHERS, Resident Lighting Designer Scott Leathers has served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Ballet since 1987. He has also served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Children’s Theatre since 2003, Kentucky Repertory Theatre (‘04-’08), Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Ballet TN. He periodically serves as interim Lighting Director for the Ryman Auditorium. Mr. Leathers has designed lighting for theatre, opera, ballet and modern dance since 1981 to critical acclaim. His design experience includes work with the Nashville Repertory Theatre, Opera Omaha, Studio West Dance Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Theatre Craft, Stage One, American Negro Playwrights Theatre, Amun Ra Theatre, Musical Theatre Louisville, Karen Steele Dance Quintet, Ballet Omaha, Ballet Austin, Cumberland County Playhouse and Dollywood. He has also worked internationally with performing arts organizations such as Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp (TECSSwitzerland) and Ballet Manila (Philippines). He has also designed scenery for numerous productions including Nashville Ballet’s productions of Robin Hood, Postcards from the Boys, The Bell Witch, Harvest Home, Western Stars and Fête Champêtre.

DAVID M. BRIDGES, Composer David Bridges has composed music on commission for The Middle Tennessee Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Ballet and Belmont University, The Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra, Belle Voci (a professional choral organization), The Nashville Chamber Singers, The Belmont University Chamber Singers, Nashville Ballet, The Stones River Chamber Players of Middle Tennessee State University, The Arts Festival of Faith of Alexandria, Louisiana, The J. Laiten Weed Trust of Yankton, South Dakota, Neal Ramsay and the Neal Ramsay Duo, The Nashville Children’s Choir, and other concert, church, and academic venues. He has been a guest artist for the Tennessee Arts Academy and composer and guest artist for the Huntsville Academy of Arts and Academics. Dr. Bridges holds a Ph.D. in music history from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. He was selected in a national search to be a Fellow of Melodious Accord, which enabled him to study composition and arranging with Alice Parker in New York City. He presently teaches in the School of Music at Belmont University.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS (CONT’D) JON ROYAL, Narrator Jon Royal is an actor, director and teacher. He was seen recently in Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s production of Macbeth. Other recent appearances include Superior Doughnuts (Tennessee Repertory Theatre), Holes (Nashville Children’s Theatre), Julius Caesar (Nashville Shakespeare Festival) and Bud, Not Buddy (Nashville Children’s Theatre). Mr. Royal has been working with youth for the last 20 years, and currently serves as a teaching artist for Nashville Children’s Theatre, Nashville Shakespeare Festival, TPAC Education and Shakespeare Center Los Angeles’ Will Power to Youth program. He also serves as a private acting instructor for students of all ages.
