SYNOPSIS PROLOGUE, Happier Times The child Cinderella and her father spend a lovely moment in the garden of their home. Cinderella’s childhood with her father was a happier time filled with warmth and love.

ACT 1, Years Later Cinderella is living with her beautiful, but evil stepmother and two ugly, self-centered stepsisters. When the stepmother receives an invitation to a formal ball given by the Prince of the Kingdom, she immediately displays her preference for her own daughters and her complete lack of concern for Cinderella. The stepmother and stepsisters are very excited about attending the event, because the Prince may choose a bride from the attendees of the party. The stepsisters begin to plan their wardrobes. They begin to bicker and fight, displaying their selfish natures.

When Cinderella enters the scene, she is barefoot because the ugly stepsisters do not allow her to wear shoes. She is undaunted by them, and when they taunt her with their lovely slippers she teases and confuses them. When they leave the room later, she quietly puts on the shoes and dances, dreaming of the ball. The sisters re-enter and begin taunting Cinderella again, but at that moment a beggar woman appears in the doorway. The sisters treat her poorly and play tricks on her, but Cinderella is kind and allows the old woman to warm her hands by the fire and sends her off with a loaf of bread.

Meanwhile, the evil stepmother arranges for a tailor and a dance master to prepare the ugly stepsisters for the ball. The stepsisters fight over their wardrobes and wigs. The dance master tries to teach the stepsisters to dance, but becomes frustrated by their clumsiness. The dance master notices Cinderella’s beauty and grace, and wants to dance with her. Their interaction enrages the stepmother, and the stepsisters rip Cinderellas’ shoes from her feet. They get excited for the ball and leave Cinderella in despair.

The beggar woman re-enters and reveals that she is actually Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. She comforts Cinderella and brings her to a magic garden where four fairy assistants, each representing a season, give her the gifts she needs to attend the ball. She receives flowers, a dress, a pumpkin turned coach and her magic slippers. They send her off to the ball, but not before warning her that she must leave the party by midnight when the spell will be broken, causing everything to disappear.

— 20 Minute Intermission — ACT 2, At the Ball At the ball, attendees dance and greet each other merrily waiting for the Prince to arrive. After a great fanfare that attendees hope to be the Prince, the stepsisters and stepmother make a grand entrance.

The Prince finally arrives and charms all of the ladies of the court, each of them vying for his hand in marriage. The ballroom dims and the Fairy Godmother enters, heralding the appearance of Cinderella. She enters and immediately sees the Prince, and goes to him to introduce herself. He is immediately smitten and they spend the evening together, falling in love. The Prince gives oranges, a rare and treasured gift in these times, to his favorite courtiers, saving the best one for Cinderella.

Only one of the sisters receives an orange and they violently fight over it. Time passes quickly and it is soon midnight, when the magic of the Fairy Godmother begins to fade. When all of the finery is gone, the Prince sees a young woman in rags running away from him in distress. All he is left with is her lovely slipper, which she leaves in her hurried exit.

— 20 Minute Intermission — ACT 3, Days Later At home, Cinderella dreams of the magical night at the ball. Meanwhile, the Prince searches in vain for the woman who fits the lost slipper. After trying the slipper on all of the women of his court without success, he invites women from foreign lands to try on the shoe. The Prince then begins to travel the countryside looking for his beloved. He arrives at Cinderella’s house where the ugly sisters hilariously try to fit their huge feet into the delicate shoe. He is about to leave when the jester alerts him to the beautiful woman by the fireplace, Cinderella. As he approaches Cinderella with the shoe, the evil stepmother grabs it and throws it into the fireplace in a fit of jealous rage. But Cinderella has the matching shoe, which proves that she is the Prince’s love. The Fairy Godmother, along with her fairy entourage, enters to transport them to the magic garden where Cinderella and the Prince dance off to their happily ever after ending.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Café, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and, most recently, Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University, Mr. Vasterling has set a new standard for arts development. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 23, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second pre-professional company of 35 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity.

LISA DIXON FRENCH, COO Lisa Dixon French recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee following a successful tenure as Executive Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra. While in Portland, Mrs. French led a highly inclusive strategic planning process that focused the organization on service to the community by enriching lives through music. Mrs. French also strengthened the orchestra’s financial stability, with increased contributed and earned income, increased endowment funds, and five years of balanced operating budgets that grew from $2.5 million to $3.3 million from 2010-2015. Originally from Edina, Minnesota, Mrs. French went to Portland from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. French is also a graduate of an executive level orchestra leadership program through the League of American Orchestras. This intensive one-year fellowship program included residencies with the Boston Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Memphis Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.

Mrs. French graduated from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) in clarinet performance and music education, and received an Arts Leadership Program Certificate. Mrs. French has also served on the Board of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Board of Visitors for the University of Southern Maine.

SHARYN MAHONEY, Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney joined Nashville Ballet as a company dancer in 1989. Since her retirement from performing, she has continued to work with the organization as School of Nashville Ballet faculty, Artistic Associate, Director of Education and Community Engagement, Ballet Master and currently, Director of Artistic Operations. During her nine years as Director of Education and Community Engagement, Mrs. Mahoney worked closely with Artistic Director Paul Vasterling to develop and fine-tune NB2, Nashville Ballet’s official second company. While in that same position, she initiated the ballet’s Community Engagement program, which has grown tremendously and now proudly reaches more than 43,000 children and families each year. As Director of Artistic Operations, she works closely with Mr. Vasterling to supervise the company’s artistic endeavors, overseeing the company, Community Engagement and School of Nashville Ballet.

TIMOTHY RINEHART YEAGER, Ballet Master A native of Washington, Pa., Timothy Yeager received his dance training at Sally Miller Dance, Third Street Music School Settlement, Syracuse University and North Carolina School of the Arts. Mr. Yeager spent 10 seasons with the North Carolina Dance Theatre where he achieved the rank of principal artist. While there, he starred in ballets by Salvatore Aiello, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes De Mille, David Parsons, Peter Pucci and Paul Taylor, among others. He has also performed as a guest artist with The Dancers Ensemble, Chautauqua Ballet Company and Tampa Ballet. Mr. Yeager has taught master classes and led intensive arts residencies throughout the eastern United States. Before joining the staff of Nashville Ballet in 2001, he served as the Ballet Master with the Moving Poets Theatre of Dance in Charlotte, NC. From 2003 to 2010, he was also Ballet Master for Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, a summer season company located in Asheville, NC. Mr. Yeager has the honor of being a repetiteur of the Salvatore Aiello Trust and has been staging Aiello’s ballets since 1996.

ALLISON ZAMORSKI, Ballet Master Originally from Virginia, Allison Zamorski began her formal dance training with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. She was an honors graduate from the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts High School Dance Program, majoring in both ballet and modern dance.

In 1999, after being awarded a scholarship with School of Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski relocated to Nashville to train under the direction of Adam Sage. She danced in NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, developing her skills as an apprentice, and was promoted to full company member in 2002 under Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Ms. Zamorski danced professionally with Nashville Ballet for four years and had multiple ballets set on her, including Vasterling’s Cinderella, Romeo & Juliet, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. After retiring as a dancer in 2006, Ms. Zamorski continued her expression of dance as a faculty member with School of Nashville Ballet, teaching a variety of dance classes to children and adults including ballet, pointe, modern, character, improvisation and repertory. She has worked extensively with the Community Engagement Program, exposing approximately 35,000 Middle Tennessee residents to the art of dance. Now, as Ballet Master with Nashville Ballet, Ms. Zamorski assists in the staging and rehearsals of various main company performances. She also oversees all NB2 performances, rehearsals and schedules, as well as youth casts in Nashville Ballet productions. Also, Ms. Zamorski has the distinct honor of being entrusted to set the works of Paul Vasterling in Nashville and throughout the country.

NASHVILLE BALLET STAFF, LEADERSHIP AND GUESTS (CONT’D) SCOTT LEATHERS, Resident Lighting Designer Scott Leathers has served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Ballet since 1987. He has also served as the Resident Lighting Designer for Nashville Children’s Theatre since 2003, Kentucky Repertory Theatre (‘04-’08), Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Ballet TN. He periodically serves as interim Lighting Director for the Ryman Auditorium. Mr. Leathers has designed lighting for theatre, opera, ballet and modern dance since 1981 to critical acclaim. His design experience includes work with the Nashville Repertory Theatre, Opera Omaha, Studio West Dance Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Theatre Craft, Stage One, American Negro Playwrights Theatre, Amun Ra Theatre, Musical Theatre Louisville, Karen Steele Dance Quintet, Ballet Omaha, Ballet Austin, Cumberland County Playhouse and Dollywood. He has also worked internationally with performing arts organizations such as Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp (TECS-Switzerland) and Ballet Manila (Philippines). He has also designed scenery for numerous productions including Nashville Ballet’s productions of Robin Hood, Postcards from the Boys, The Bell Witch, Harvest Home, Western Stars and Fête Champêtre.

NATHAN FIFIELD, Principal Guest Conductor Nathan Fifield is a regular guest conductor at top ballet companies including San Francisco Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Houston Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. He is currently the principle conductor of the Tulsa Ballet. He recently conducted John Neumeier’s The Little Mermaid with San Francisco Ballet and premiered the joint San Francisco Ballet/Pacific Northwest Ballet revival of Balanchine’s classic Coppélia. Mr. Fifield made his European debut with Opera de Bordeaux’s Sleeping Beauty, and has lead both Tulsa Ballet and Nashville Ballet in new productions of Rite of Spring. Equally at home in the opera world, Mr. Fifield is also currently the music director of Light Opera of Oklahoma. He has led many productions including Carmen, Le Nozze di Figaro, Hansel and Gretel, West Side Story and Into the Woods, and has worked with such companies as Utah Festival Opera, Opera in the Heights and Chelsea Opera. His teachers and mentors include Michael Tilson Thomas, David Hayes and Gustav Meier.

JAMES KRONZER, Guest Scenic Designer James Kronzer resides in Washington, D.C., where he has designed shows for The Shakespeare Theatre and The Kennedy Center among others. His work has been seen on Broadway, Off-Broadway and regionally in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Denver, San Diego, Atlanta, Florida, Salt Lake City, Portland and Knoxville. He has designed numerous national tours as well as a new musical for Disney called Twice Charmed. Mr. Kronzer has adapted designs for the national tours of Shrek, Spamalot, The Producers and The Wizard of Oz, and has also designed numerous shows for Norwegian Cruise Lines. For TV, he has designed specials for both Showtime and Comedy Central starring comedians Joe Piscopo, Nick Cannon and Whitney Cummings. Mr. Kronzer has received eight Helen Hayes Awards (D.C.) and two Barrymore Awards (Philadelphia). He is a member of United Scenic Artists. More of his work can be seen at www.jameskronzer.com.

JUDANNA LYNN, Guest Costume Designer Judanna Lynn has designed costumes for most of the major dance companies in the United States, among them New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Ballet West, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Met, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet, Hartford Ballet, Hubbard Street, The Jose Limon Dance Co., Louisville Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Washington Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet’s latest production of Nutcracker. Other credits include the costumes for Ballet de Santiago’s Festival of the Lion King for the opening of Disney’s theme park in Hong Kong; Houston Ballet’s highly acclaimed productions of Don Quixote, Dracula and Cleopatra; the musical Lyle for Charles Strouse; The Hartford Stage/Old Globe Theatre’s production of Tintypes; the musicals Once On This Island for the Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis; Hats! and Tin Pan Alley Rag for the Cleveland Playhouse. Ms. Lynn formerly danced with San Francisco Opera Ballet and was a resident costume designer of The Juilliard School.

She is also a painter whose work has been seen at the Rizzoli and Miniatura Galleries in New York City, the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art and in private collections.

DENISE EASON, Guest Coach Denise Eason returns to Nashville after a 20-year residency in Hartford, Connecticut where she was with the Hartford Ballet and after retirement, an adjunct professor of dance at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. From 1989 to 1994, Mrs. Eason was a Nashville Ballet company dancer and now returns as company teacher and coach. Mrs. Eason moved to Connecticut to join the Hartford Ballet in 1994 under the direction of Kirk Peterson. There she danced many principal and soloist roles by Balanchine, Choo-San Goh and Peterson to name a few. Among her favorites were Tall Girl Principal in Balanchine’s Rubies, Sanguinic and Choleric in Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Third Movement Principal Girl in Choo-San Goh’s In The Glow of the Night, Myrtha in Peterson’s Giselle and Sugar Plum and Snow Queen in Peterson’s American Nutcracker. Prior to joining the Hartford Ballet, she danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Chautauqua Festival Company, Michigan Opera and Septime Weber Dance. Mrs. Eason has had the privilege of teaching a wide range of students. From teaching at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neil Theater, teaching company class to MOMIX, being a faculty member of academies affiliated with professional ballet companies, to now teaching and working with the dancers of Nashville Ballet. Mrs. Eason brings with her a career of over 30 years of professional ballet and teaching experience.
