orale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Sigonella hosted their annual Red, White, and BOOM celebration at Midtown on NAS I, July 5.

Sigonella community members gathered in the Midtown parking lot to enjoy some fun, food, and entertainment during the annual Independence Day celebration.

The event kicked off at Splasher’s pool with a cardboard boat regatta. The regatta featured two-person teams in homemade cardboard boats racing two laps in the pool.

Throughout the day there was entertainment for the kids with the usual bouncy house and inflatable slides.

Many organizations were also on-hand cooking up plenty of food for everyone. At 10:00 p.m., the event culminated with its ever popular fireworks display.

There was the John Lenze variety show, featuring a cow milking contest in which participants had to get as much milk as they could from the “cow” within a couple minutes. Of course, no Sigonella festival would be complete without a cornhole tournament.

NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler I would like to thank MWR, Security and all of the other Great Americans responsible for putting on the Red, White and Boom celebration for our country’s 237th birthday, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, last Friday.

I hope everyone that was here during the long weekend took the opportunity to come out and enjoy the festivities.

I also want to mention a couple of responsibilities we have as service members and citizens of Sigonella. Personal safety and security and that of our family and shipmates should be our top priority. It only takes a few minutes watching or reading the news to understand the amount of instability in this region and the reasons each of us must take a proactive role in the security of our community.

One important security measure that is in place is the restrictions on who is permitted to enter the base unescorted. This is a privilege that our military, dependent, or civilian employee ID cards give us. I can’t stress enough how important it is that we keep up with these and protect them from falling into the hands of those who may not have our safety and security in mind.

Remember…every lost ID card has the

potential to allow access to unauthorized personnel.

In addition to the security threat that a misplaced or lost ID card has, it also has a financial loss. There is cost to replace each Common Access Card (CAC) and that is money and time wasted that could be better spent in other areas. There are some procedures in place should you become separated from your ID card. First and foremost, report ANY loss to the NASSIG Security Department. If this occurs after hours or on a weekend, a temporary pass can be obtained until PSD can issue another.

However, prior to PSD issuing another ID card, the sponsor must complete a special request chit through their department.

Repeat offenders will be required to submit the request to the installation commanding officer.

Another responsibility we share in our security is escorting guests on the installation. You should all be proud of where you live and work and it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to show visiting family members and friends our Sigonella community.

As per NASSIGINST 5530.2D, authorized personnel may sponsor up to

six guests. As part of the procedures and by just using common sense, sponsors must be present when acquiring and returning the pass and during ALL times the guests remain on the installation.

Each of you can do your part in keeping Sigonella Safe. Stay alert and vigilant, and if you see something, say something.

aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella hosted a tenant command meeting on July 2 at the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Compass Room on NAS 1.

The monthly meeting is held on the first Tuesday of every month and is the forum for NAS Sigonella department and tenant commands to synchronize events and discuss issues that may affect the installation as a whole.

Commands often have very different structures, requirements, and tasking.

The sharing of information across organizations provides the installation with the knowledge needed to better support and meet the needs of all customers here in Sigonella.

lub Beyond sent a group of seven high school students and three adult leaders to meet with more than 400 other Club Beyond students from Navy, Army and Air Force bases all over Europe for a Service Project trip to the Czech Republic from 15-22 June. These students were willing to spend their first week of summer vacation sleeping in tents, sweating all day without air conditioning, building playgrounds, teaching sports and helping teach English classes and putting on Vacation Bible School for children in the Czech Republic. At the end of the week, seven playgrounds were dedicated and seven secondary schools. The principals expressed their gratitude and thanks for students who cared enough to travel, spend time with students from a different culture, and work hard to provide a playground the school could otherwise not afford.

Every evening all 400 students gathered for “Club” to sing songs and listen to the speaker share about the Christian faith. Club was an amazing time, and one evening during a thunderstorm, the entire room spontaneously rocked out to “Don’t Stop Believing” while some people filled and bounced balloons, others pulled bubbles from somewhere to cover the crowd, and still others played the air guitar and jumped off the stage. But the highlight for most people was in the discussion time each evening after the talk. One student

said after the trip “I had no idea God loved me no matter what” and another simply said, “Thanks for listening.”

This trip marked the end of a great first school year at Sigonella! Club Beyond is open to all military teens in 6th – 12th grade and both staff and volunteers make themselves available to be positive role models and journey with those teens through the hard challenges of adolescence. School’s out, but “Summer Club” kicked off 11 July and will have a day trip every Thursday! We’ll leave the base in the morning, come back in the afternoon and the first trip is to the beach! Club Beyond is still held every Wednesday and focuses on giving teens the opportunity to discuss the hard questions they have about life and applying Biblical wisdom to everyday issues.

The next Club Beyond trip is Winter Blitz in Innsbruck, Austria from December 29 to January 4. High school students will again join Club Beyond groups from across Europe to ski, snowboard or participate in a basketball camp. We’ll visit the town of Innsbruck, go to an indoor water park, a 6k sled run and ring in the new year with style. Like every Club Beyond trip, students will participate in Club every night! he 389th edition of the “Festino di Santa Rosalia” (Little Saint Rosalia Festival) will reach its high point this Sunday (July 14th) with a spectacular show honoring Saint Rosalia, the city beloved patroness. whose religious celebrations are observed annually on Sept. 4.

Even though Saint Rosalia’s Day is observed on Sept. 4 with religious celebrations, the summer festival is indeed a centuryold tradition for all the members of the Palermo Catholic community to give thanks to the saint who saved the city from a terrible plague epidemic in 1624. The evening parade is the highlight of this spectacular festival blending religion and Sicilian folklore.

It revolves around the “Carro Trionfale,” a majestic float on top of which a statue depicting the saint is placed. First introduced in 1686, this gilded Baroque float is typically shaped as a boat and built new every year. At the beginning of the festival, the city mayor shouts three times “Viva Palermo e Santa Rosalia!” (Long live Saint Rosalia) kicking off the festivities.

of the city.” Organizers said the saint will be invoked to save “once again” the city from the new plagues of the modern times (lack of job opportunities, lack of services and hope for elders, homeless, disabled and needy). A group of 300 children will follow the boat-shaped-float parade.

The statue depicting the saint was carved by Giacomo Rizzo, a local artist.

The intense devotion displayed by Palermitani (Palermo residents) to Saint Rosalia can also be observed in popular sayings such as “Santa Rosalia, pensateci Voi!” (Saint Rosalia, please take care of it! Palermitani use it when they are puzzled about something) or “Nun mi cuntari li tri ghiorna d’u fistinu.” (“Don’t tell me about the threeday festival,” which means: “don’t tell me what everybody already knows”).

Santa Rosalia is indeed invoked for intercession with God in times of need. Her relics, which are kept inside the Palermo cathedral, are venerated by millions of pilgrims around the globe.

Famous travelers from the 18th century described this breathtaking festival. Scottish Patrick Brydone is one of them.

He toured the south of Italy

and wrote a book called A Tour though Sicily and Malta (dating to 1773). Here is he described the float parade: “The triumphal chariot was preceded by a party of men on horseback, with trumpets and drums, and by all the high officials of the city in full regalia. The “machine” is truly enormous: it measures seventy feet in length, thirty in width and over eighty in height; as it passes through the streets, it towers above Palermo’s tallest houses. The lower part looks like a Roman galley, but it widens towards the upper part. The front part is broader and shaped like an oval amphitheatre, with seats all around: this is the great orchestra, thronged with musicians in several rows, one above the other. At the back of the orchestra rises a great cupola, supported by six Corinthian columns and adorned with numerous figures of saints and angels, with a gigantic silver statue of Santa Rosalia on the top.”

French artist and archaeologist Baron Dominique Vivant Denon wrote: “The fifth day was celebrated with a never-ending procession that began around sunset and ended one hour after midnight. Here you can see the Palermitans’ predilection for “pageants” and their extreme

devotion to their Saint. Each congregation brings its own pageant with a representation of scenes from the Old or the New Testament acted out by means of life-sized images or by children.”

Today, modern technology has helped in making the festival a breathtaking event. Thousands among pilgrims and tourists from all over the world will attend the 384th edition of the festino which will feature parades, shows, fireworks, food stalls and religious processions.

During this vibrant festival, don’t miss to check the food “bancarelle”(booths) which sell delicious local specialties and treats such as “Càlia e Simenza” (roasted chickpeas and salted pumpkin seeds), “ Sfincione,” (Sicilian pizza topped with tomato sauce, bread crumbs, salted sardines, onions and caciocavallo cheese), “Torrone” (nougat), “Pani e Panelli” (deepfried chickpea fritters), “Crocchè” (potato croquettes), “Pani ca' meusa” (sandwich filled with sautéed beef spleen which could be 'schietta' when sprinkled with grated caciocavallo cheese or “married,' with a fresh ricotta cheese) “Purpu Vugghiutu” (boiled octopus) and the refreshing “muluna” (watermelon) and “gelato” (icecream).

Life of Saint Rosalia Saint Rosalia, who is nicknamed Santuzza or little Saint, was the daughter of a noble family of northeastern Sicily and a descendant of Charlemagne.

She lived in the second half of the twelfth century. According to tradition, she left home when she was still young woman to live as a hermit in a cave of Mount Quisquinia near Bivona and later in another of Monte Pellegrino near Palermo where a small Byzantine church was erected.

She lived there all her life and she was buried in an adjoining cave. In 1624, her remains were discovered and moved to the Cathedral of Palermo. The devotion that palermitani (Palermo’s

townspeople) have for Santa Rosalia (Saint Rosalia) dates back to 1624. Rosalia is believed to have averted a terrible epidemic of plague that broke out in Palermo. According to tradition, despite the Palermitani repeatedly invoked the four city co-patron saints (Cristina, Ninfa, Oliva and Agata) against the terrible disease, however, plague still spread at a horrifying rate.

But a miracle occurred when a soap manufacturer named Vincenzo Banelli, whose wife died because of the epidemic, urged the Palermo Cardinal to hold a procession featuring the relics of Saint Rosalia throughout the city. Tradition holds that Santa Rosalia appeared in a vision to Banelli instructing him that if her earthly remains would be taken in procession through the city, plague would cease. Thus, on July 14, 1624, a magnificent procession featuring the saint reliquie or relics placed in a silver case of crimson velvet, and accompanied by the Royal Council, the Senate, illustrious citizens and all the clergy, took place in Palermo. At the end of it, the plague was over.

Since 1624, every year, the Palermo’s community has been celebrating with true devotion its patron saint.

Festival Schedule The evening of July 14th is the highlight of the festival that is running from July 10 through 15. Around 8 p.m., the parade of the Carro Trionfale leaves from the Cathedral and proceeds along corso (avenue) Vittorio Emanuele, the Royal Palace, the cathedral and piazza Vigliena also known as “Quattro Canti,” a breathtaking octagonal square illuminated by the sun’s rays from dusk to dawn in which the four oldest districts of the city intersect in one point. Later, “U’ jocu di focu,”an impressive firework show, is performed at midnight.

(Italy Magazine) - The Mazzei vineyard in Siena, Tuscany has made a wine named ‘Philip’ in honour of Italian Philip Mazzei, who is credited with the idea that all men are created equal.

Born Filippo (Philip) Mazzei in Tuscany, Mazzei was an Italian patriot, merchant, doctor, winemaker, horticulturist and pamphleteer. Mazzei moved to London in 1755 where he met Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Adams. In 1773, Mazzei led a group of Italians who went to Virginia where they introduced the cultivation of vineyards, olives and Mediterranean fruits.

There Mazzei was a neighbor of Thomas Jefferson, the American Founding Father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the USA. The two became friends, starting the first commercial vineyard in the Commonwealth of Virginia with George Washington. The vineyard was planted at Jefferson’s estate in Monticello. The vines planted included some from Tuscany, Naples and Sicily.

When Mazzei returned to Italy in 1779, he became a secret agent for the state of Virginia and shipped arms to the revolutionaries during the American War of Independence.

Mazzei then travelled in Europe promoting republican ideals, fund raising for his adopted nation and wrote a history of the American Revolution. He returned to Italy and died in Pisa in 1816.

Mazzei and Jefferson’s friendship was not just confined to a love of wine. They shared an interest in politics, exchanging ideas about liberty and freedom, and corresponded with each throughout their lives. Jefferson was influenced by Mazzei’s ideas and writings. In 1774, Mazzei wrote in an article for ‘The Virginia Gazette’ that Jefferson translated: “Tutti gli uomini sono per natura egualmente liberi e indipendenti. Quest’eguaglianza è necessaria per costituire un governo libero. Bisogna che ognuno sia uguale all’altro nel diritto naturale.” (All men are by nature equally free and independent. Such equality is necessary in order to create a free government. All men must be equal to each other in natural law.)

Two years later, Jefferson later paraphrased the idea for the doctrine that “All men are created equal” that is included in the Declaration of Independence. According to the Joint Resolution 175 of the 103rd Congress, the phrase in the Declaration of Independence “All men are created equal” was suggested by the Mazzei.

Mazzei’s descendant, also named Filippo, says the wine is dedicated to his ancestor and is “inspired by the values of life, liberty and happiness.” The first vintage dedicated to Mazzei is from 2008. Some 2,500 cases were produced, 2,000 of which are intended for the American market where they will be on sale from 4 July, Independence Day. Filippo said of his ancestor: “He was the first Italian immigrant to promote political and economic relations between the United States and Italy.”

Around 7,800 migrants landed in Italy so far this year (ANSA) - Rome - Around 7,800 migrants and asylumseekers landed on Italy's shores in the first half of 2013, UNHCR said Friday, while some 600 more arrived in Malta.

The United Nations refugee agency said that most of the migrants came from North Africa, principally Libya. It said

around 40 people have died trying to make the crossing from Tunisia to Italy so far this year.

In 2012, almost 500 people were reported dead or missing at sea. UNHCR attributed the decrease in deaths so far in 2013 to the efforts of the Italian and Maltese authorities to better coordinate sea rescues.

The crossing between Italy and North Africa is very dangerous and every year people die attempting it. On Monday Pope Francis will visit the Sicilian island of Lampedusa to pray with migrants and local people and will throw a wreath into the sea to pay tribute to the migrants who die at sea.

Politicians plea for home for Riace bronzes (ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, - Italy's culture minister must take fast action on moving world-famous ancient Greek warrior statues, the Riace Bronzes, into a safe home, two Democratic Party politicians said Friday. The bronzes, some of Italy's most-loved cultural icons, have been lying on their backs for more than two years in the home of the Calabrian regional government after being moved from a museum undergoing restoration work.

However, the work at Reggio Calabria's National Archaeological Museum has become a victim of budget cuts and red tape, which means the statues remain homeless. ''We call on the government to outline what steps it intends to take to safeguard the Riace Bronzes and complete the museum restoration,'' said Rosy Bindi and Demetrio Battaglia, politicians with the Democratic Party (PD).

Culture Minister Massimo Bray is also a PD member in Italy's coalition government cobbled together with members of the PD and the centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party.

Museum renovations began in November 2009 and since then the valuable bronzes have been in storage, away from paying visitors and students.

The bronzes' trip across town to the council offices was supposed to be a brief one.When they left storage at the Archaeological Museum on December 22, 2012, officials said it was ''just for a six-month restoration''.

The move was the first time in 28 years that the priceless 2,500-year-old bronzes had left the Museo Nazionale di Reggio Calabria.

The only previous occasion they were let out was in 1981, for a triumphant round-Italy tour.

Calabria has repeatedly refused permission for copies of the statues to be made and rejected pleas for Italian promotional events worldwide and for the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa.

In a citywide vote in 2003, the people of Reggio Calabria came out overwhelmingly against the ''cloning'' of the statues, which have been the Calabrian capital's biggest tourist draw since they were discovered.

The Bronzes were discovered in 1972 by a Roman holidaymaker scuba diving off the Calabrian coast and turned out to be one of Italy's most important archaeological finds in the last 100 years.

The statues are of two virile men, presumably warriors or gods, who possibly held lances and shields at one time. At around two metres, they are larger than life.The 'older' man, known as Riace B, wears a helmet, while the 'younger' Riace A has nothing covering his rippling hair. Both are naked.

Although the statues are cast in bronze, they feature silver lashes and teeth, copper red lips and nipples, and eyes made of ivory, limestone and a glass and amber paste.

Operations Department kicks off energy conservation initiative

T

he “midnight sun” has finally set on Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s operational base! If you’ve ever made the drive to NAS 2 at night, you couldn’t help but notice the giant light guiding your way. With the limited amount of resources available and in an effort to conserve those resources, the Operations department has stepped up in a conservation effort that will help ensure these are available for many years to come. It is an initiative to protect those limited resources and be good citizens and stewards of every American’s hard earned tax dollars.

The primary purpose of the light is for parking aircraft and conducting maintenance once the aircraft are in place, so there was an opportunity to find some energy savings with very little effort and no affect on the mission.

It is one of the many ways commands around Sigonella can help cut costs and save precious resources. “The biggest thing that we’re doing is turning off the giant flood lights until they’re

needed,” said Lt. Jenna Epifanio, air terminal officer. “It’s obvious from wherever you are that they are on and consuming a lot of energy.”

These efforts should not be limited to air operations.

“Resource conservation is the act of caring for what you have, using only what you need and reusing what you can,” said Capt. Chris Dennis, commanding officer.

“Nothing is free, nothing. Leaving lights on and computers plugged in and running wastes energy and money. Let's work together to ensure our resource dollars are used smartly toward building and maintaining our community rather than wastefully - in the end we only have so much money and when it's gone, it's gone.”

nergy availability costs and security are at the forefront of the challenges faced by our Nation, Department of Defense, and Navy.

Energy is essential for developing and employing our combat capability in support of National Defense. The cost of energy needed to complete Navy missions is becoming more volatile and less secure. Both price volatility and supply predictability are strategic concerns since Navy operational flexibility and sustainability are linked directly to our access to energy. High energy costs siphon away resources that can be used to procure Force Structure and to train and equip our Sailors. The potential for disruption of fuel supplies threatens our ability to perform in the battle space and the vulnerability of energy supplies to our facilities puts our ability to support our deployed forces at risk. Additionally, there are numerous current and prospective regulatory and legislative mandates related to energy and climate change.

Ashore and afloat efforts shall be focused across three cross functional tasks;

physical and strategic security, research and development, and policy/doctrine.

The overarching strategy will conserve energy, develop alternative energy options, and secure energy distribution.

The Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics (CNO N4) will lead efforts to develop a Navy Energy Strategy using a governance structure comprised of Working Groups, a coordinating Energy Transition Office, and an Executive Steering Committee.

The Navy Energy Coordination Office (NECO) has been established to support Task Force Energy and to coordinate the overall Navy Energy strategy. Specifically, NECO is responsible for supporting energy efficiency, conservation, and alternative energy investments for Navy tactical (maritime, aviation, and expeditionary) and shore forces, developing a comprehensive Navy energy strategy, and coordinating with Naval Systems Commands to ensure programs are effectively implemented. NECO resides in the CNO’s Energy and Environmental Readiness Division, under CNO N4.
