Scott Butler This coming week, people around the world will pause to reflect on the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. 9/11 changed the course of history and with it, all of our lives. For more than a decade, our Nation’s forces have continued to fight against terrorists – and against all those who intend our Nation harm. We have all made sacrifices and endured hardship over the years, and many of us – too many of us – have lost friends or family along the way.

This year, our chiefs and chief (selects) will lead a ceremony to honor all those lost during the tragic events of 9/11, and those who continue to serve, to ensure such events are never, ever repeated. I encourage all of you to come out and take part in this remembrance ceremony. The ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11th at the Midtown complex. Not long after, our talented chapel musicians will perform a remembrance concert at the chapel for the community, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Both events are sure to inspire.

On a lighter note, the 2012-13 sports season will “kick off ” this weekend! I want to invite the entire Sigonella community to get involved and support our schools as they begin their seasons. The first event of

the season involves our own Jaguar football team taking on Rota – the team that ended the Jags season last year with 7 onside kicks and a few injuries – on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Annex Field at NAS I. Revenge – absent the injuries, of course – will be sweet!!

On Sunday, the Sigonella Swordfish will welcome Naples Tigersharks to our pool beginning at 8:30 a.m. Please come out and show your support for our youth sports programs.

After the rain over Labor Day weekend, I don’t have to remind you all that rainy season is approaching and that can make driving here in Sicily an even greater challenge. Please take some time to make sure that your vehicles are in condition to handle the Fall and Winter road conditions here, and that you have an emergency kit tucked away in the car…just in case you overestimate the reliability of your island beater or in case of an emergency. You can never be too prepared!

Lastly, I want to thank our Voting Assistance Officers for the work they have been putting in to ensure that the Sigonella community is well-informed and afforded the opportunity and resources to cast their vote as we approach this year’s election cycle. If

you haven't registered to vote, or you have registered but you haven't requested your absentee ballot, NOW is the time to do so.

The Sigonella Swordfish are competing in their first home swim meet, Sunday, September 9. Come out to the Remembrance Day Swim Meet at the NAS I swimming pool from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and cheer on the home team as they swim against the Tiger Sharks from Naples.

For the 2012- 2013 season, the Sigonella Swordfish team is comprised of more than 70 swimmers ranging from ages 6 - 17, led by Coaches Tracey Bonvie and John Youberg.

Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Sigonella Commanding Officer Commander Jeffrey Buss took part in the September 3 wreath laying memorial ceremony, hosted by Associazione Kakiparis. The ceremony was in remembrance of the World War II Cassibile Armistice that was signed on September 3, 1943 by Italian General Giuseppe Castellano of the Axis powers and American General Walter Bedell Smith for the Allies.

The armistice, which was not disclosed until September 8, marked the unconditional surrender of Italy after the Allied troops' landing in Sicily as part of Operation Husky.

Siracusa Deputy Mayor Concetto La Bianca presented Buss with a participation award to thank the Navy for having sent a delegation to the memorial ceremony which was first held in 2000.

"We are honored to host once again a delegation representing the young and brave American soldiers who liberated Sicily in 1943," said La Bianca.

It was an event Buss was more than happy to attend.

"It is very important that people remember the events and the great sacrifices that were made here 69 years ago," said Buss.

Mold and mildew What you should know

BY MARY JANE RUSSO Housing Department, Sigonella Problems with mold? Just what is mold and how can it affect you? Mildew and molds are fungi - simple microscopic organisms that thrive anywhere there is a moist environment.

Molds are a necessary part of the environment. Without them, leaves would not decay and aspects of soil enrichment could not take place. It is their ability to destroy organic materials, however, that makes mold a problem for people - in our homes and in our bodies. When exposure is great, some individuals, particularly those with allergies and asthma, can experience illness that could be mild to serious or anywhere in between. It can also cause flu-like symptoms, fever, fatigue, respiratory dysfunction, frequent and excessive nose bleeds, dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and liver damage.

How can you identify mold? Mold may look cottony, velvety, rough or leathery and have different colors like white, gray, brown, black, yellow or green and may develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure. Even worse, it will continue to grow until steps are taken to eliminate the source of moisture, and effectively deal with the mold problem. Mildew (mold in early stage) and molds grow on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, decaying leaves and other organic materials.

How can you prevent mold? Controlling moisture is the key to stopping indoor mold growth and subsequent damage to property. Use of air conditioning and a dehumidifier during warm, humid weather while keeping the windows closed can also help. Just make sure that it has a hose in order for the water to drain away continuously. Also wipe down shower walls after bathing or use shower cleaning products to help prevent molds in showers and tubs.

How do you know if mold is active or dormant? If you brush a mold spore and it smears, it is active. If it is powdery and dry, it is inactive. Freezing, air drying and exposure to UV light are all methods that will inactivate mold. Once it is inactive, you need to either vacuum it up or wipe it off.

Do not vacuum indoors unless you have a HEPA filter (HEPA is a type of filter that can trap a large amount of very small particles that other vacuum cleaners would simply recirculate back into the air of your home thereby spreading the spores). You can also use chemicals to kill mold spores such as a solution of bleach or mold/mildew cleaning solution on all surfaces that have come into contact with it. Inactive mold spores can spread to any item by direct contact and re-infect under the right conditions.

As a resident, it is your responsibility to clean up moisture and spills to prevent mold or report them as soon as you become aware of them. Here are some of the warning signs to help you identify mold: ■ Recent flooding from inside (plumbing problems such as sink, tubs and toilets) or outside (storm water etc.)

■ Water leaks in floors, walls or ceilings ■ Broken water pipes ■ Wet or damp carpets ■ Poor ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms Contact your UH Building Manager or Marinai Inspector if the contaminated area is over 3’ x 3’ square and you cannot handle the job yourself or if you have any questions on how to eliminate it. They will be more than willing to assist you.

Remember, stop mold before it starts by cleaning up water spills and leaks immediately!

Feast of Madonna di Ognina Schedule

Feast of Madonna di Ognina in Catania, September 7-9 Each year, the fishermen of Ognina demonstrate their devotion to the Virgin Mary with the Feast of Madonna di Ognina. This year, festivities begin on Friday, September 7 with a fried fish feast and concludes on Sunday, September 9.

History of the Feast of Madonna di Ognina The origin of the festival dates back to the 19th century. A statue depicting the Virgin Mary was placed on a wooden carriage and paraded through the few streets of the Ognina district.

On September 12, 1889, a fire occurred after the festival. The devotees left the candles lit on the wooden carriage setting both the carriage and the statue on fire. A new statue was needed to replace the damaged one. While this new statue was being carved in Paris, a wax sculpture depicting the child Virgin Mary, named “bammina” (female child) was temporary displayed in the sanctuary. The new statue, carved by a French monk, replaced the original in 1889.

Originally, the financial support to organize the festival was provided by the residents of the area. Money was collected and put into a moneybox named “Caruseddi.” Those moneyboxes werebroken during a short ceremony held on the Friday preceding the main festival. Today, in leui of collected donations, each fisherman allocates half of his weekly income, called “menza parti” to support the organization of the festival.

History of the Ognina Sanctuary The sanctuary that hosts the precious statue was built in 1392, although historic chronicles state that the named “Santa Maria di Lognina” was already paying tributes to the Vatican in 1308. In 1676, historian Giovanni Andrea Massa wrote that pilgrims from all over the world came to the Ognina Sanctuary to thank the Virgin Mary for the graces (healing or other miracles) she had granted them. After a terrible earthquake in 1693, the church was rebuilt in a new location facing north.

Devotion to the Virgin Mary One of the famous stories passed down through generations tells of a miracle that saved the gulf of Ognina. According to legend, on March 26, 1933, a violent sea storm threatened the gulf, destroying parts of the pier and damaging boats. It brought waves more than 40 feet tall. Gripped by panic, local fishermen turned to the Virgin Mary for help. They moved the statue of the Madonna from the alter of the Ognina Sanctuary and placed it on the church’s square. Miraculously, the sea calmed down just hours later.

Today, as in decades past, fishermen trade a special greeting among each other as a tribute to both Jesus and the Virgin Mary. When two boats cross paths during night fishing, a crew leader says “Virgin Mary!” and the other replies “Jesus.”

Then, they exchange information on the outcome of the fishing.

From the Catania Train Station take Viale Africa. Turn right at Piazza Europa and drive for about a mile along the Riviera.

There is a little port right before the overpass that leads toward Acicastello. The Ognina Sanctuary is located under the road.

Opera music at Taormina Greek Theater Olive oil labels must be better regulated

by EC, says Italy; Quality is cornerstone for country's agro-product image (ANSA) - Rome - Italy's Ministry of Agriculture is asking the European Commission in Brussels to better regulate source information on the labels of bottles of olive oil. Italy wants to be sure that operators are complying with EU labeling rules that require information regarding the origin of the oil be clearly stated and easy to understand. "Olive oil is a symbol of the Italian agroproducts... (and) Italian growers understandably require recognition for the quality of their product, which is not always renumerated by the market," said Italian Agriculture Minister Mario Catania. Italian producers struggle to be properly paid for the quality products, and therefore labeling that clearly distinguishes great oil from poor imposters is very important, said the minister. The European Commission has been deliberating the issue of labeling.

Ferrari Goes Green With a GeothermalPowered Museum in Modena

(Inhabitat.com) Modena - Ferrari, the sports car legend, has recently opened up a new Museum in Modena, Italy. Working together with Future Systems and Shiro Studio, Ferrari designed a museum dedicated to the man, Enzo Ferrari. The building stands on a sustainable partial bermed construction and is powered by geothermal energy. (Over 50% of the main exhibition building is set below ground level) It maintains temperature whether it’s cool or warm outside. The windows have thermo sensors, which get activated during summer to allow for cool air to circulate, increase

energy eďŹƒciency and decrease energy use. The museum building also sports photovoltaic technology and water recycling systems. The bright yellow exteriors are coupled with modern white interiors, giving it a plush futuristic look. The building’s ceiling is made up of translucent materials, thereby letting the natural light inside. The curves of the building represent those of the stylish curves of Ferrari cars.

The Museo Filangieri Reopens in Napoli After Decades of Renovations (Italy Magazine) Naples -After closing in the nineties for renovations, Naples' Filangieri Museum, founded in 1888 to hold the personal collection of Gaetano Filangieri, has finally reopened to visitors. The museum is best known for its setting: the 15th-century Palazzo Como, inspired by the Florentine Renaissance architectural style. Inside, like the insignia on a modern baseball cap or Fendi wallet, the symbol, a nested 'G' and 'F' (Gaetano Filangieri's initials), is stenciled at regular intervals along the walls in contrasting red and blue, evidence of the extensive work done on the building to honor Gaetano's memory and collection.

Prince Filangieri of Arianiello was a lawyer, scholar and philosopher with a great interest in ancient antiquities.

His personal art collection includes not only fine art, but a vast array of weapons, china, miniatures and precious materials such as ivory, ancient glass, and coral.

Though the collection was damaged and looted during World War II, other private collectors donated their pieces to round out the remaining collection, including Domenico de Luca Montalto's Villa Livia liberty-style complex, complete with all period furnishings and art intact, which is also part of the museum. ACIREALE, Sicily - More than 25 chief petty officers (CPO) and FY13 CPO (selects) from Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella gathered at Chiesa di San Camillo, Mensa del Poveri in Acireale, to help those less fortunate, August 29.

The community relations project (COMREL) served as a training tool for the CPO (selects).

"One must learn how to serve in order to lead and that is no exception to future chiefs of Sigonella," said Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Adolfo Ancho. “Part of being a chief is taking care of your Sailors and taking care [of] the people that work for you.”

The CPO and CPO (selects) cleaned the grounds of the Chiesa, sorted donated clothing, and prepared lunch for those without means.

Showing devotion to duty by serving the underserved created an even stronger sense of teamwork amongst the CPO (selects).

“Working to help those in need and take an active interest in the well-being of our local community helps build long tern success," said Chief (select) Master-at-Arms Glenn Wade. "Helping others and working as a team also builds character. A strong character is a fundamental attribute that makes way for our ability to lead. Once we put those anchors on, it doesn't stop there. We are all neighbors and a part of this community. We want to give back and show our host nation that we are a part of the community."

The CPO (selects) will put on their anchors Friday, September 14 during the traditional Chief Pinning Ceremony.

Meet Rocsi Diaz!

USO Entertainment presents Rocsi Diaz. On September 12, you have the chance to meet her.

Diaz, a New Orleans native, hosts the nationally syndicated radio show “Rocsi on the Radio.”

She is also former host of Black Entertainment Television's (BET) 106 & Park. Lately she’s been trying her hand at acting.

She will talk to DoDDs students about education, anti-bullying and self-esteem, subjects that are most important to her.

“My passion lies in bettering and empowering our youth," Diaz said. "Through my charity, The RocStar Foundation, mentoring and speaking engagements and through how I live my everyday life, I try to be a role model – not only for young girls – but for the youth as a whole. I want them to know they can achieve anything they set forth in their mind. You always need that cheerleader in your life.”

Rocsi who revealed that she battled anorexia as a middle and high school student, wants to encourage young people to become confident, follow their passions and, as she puts it, “become the best you.”

Navy seeks members for FY14 MCPO, SCPO, CPO Selection Boards FROM NAVY PERSONNEL COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- Navy Personnel Command is accepting senior enlisted leadership's applications to serve on Fiscal Year 2014 active-duty and Reserve E-9, E-8 and E-7 selection boards, officials said Aug 31.

Master chiefs should not consider their career complete until they have participated as a member of an enlisted selection board, according Navy Personnel Command (NPC) Force Master Chief (AW/SW/NAC) Jon Port. "Participation by senior leaders in selection boards is paramount to the Navy's future. It is our responsibility to sit a selection board to choose those most qualified to relieve us."

According to the message, active and Reserve component master chiefs are encouraged to apply to serve on a board. Frocked master chiefs may also participate in the selection board process. There are no restrictions on active-duty serving on Reserve boards or Reserve/full-time support serving on active boards.

Senior chief petty officers may also serve on the active or Reserve

E-7 boards as either members or recorders. They may only serve as recorders on the E-9 or E-8 boards.

Chief petty officers may serve as recorders on E-9, E-8 and E-7 selection boards. Applicants should not discuss their application with any members from their command, other than those required to review their application.

Board dates, application procedures and guidance are available in NAVADMIN 264/12. Application deadlines vary based on the different board convening dates, see message for further guidance.

Preserving the integrity of the selection board process before, during and after a board is vital to the reliability of the board, according to Port. It is important that prospective candidates submit their application on their own behalf.

Forwarding via administrative personnel will compromise board membership and could invalidate their application. Applications should be submitted only by the member applying, their command, Fleet or Force master chief. Participation on a future board should not be discussed with fellow mem-

bers while serving on an earlier board.

Potential board members are charged with preserving board information the moment they are officially notified by NPC that they have been chosen to sit on a promotion selection board.
