WORDS FROM OUR CEO

Dear ConnCAT & ConnCORP Family,

I am honored to share with you the tremendous strides and impactful outcomes achieved by the ConnCAT and ConnCORP family of businesses, Orchid Cafe, Orchid Hospitality, and The Lab at ConnCORP and Petals Market.

As we reflect upon the accomplishments of 2023, I am thrilled to share with you this annual report detailing just some of the incredible successes and transformative impact our organization has achieved. The past year has been marked by significant milestones, innovative programs, and collaborative efforts that have reinforced our commitment to excellence. And none of this would be possible without the decades-long success of our premier organization, ConnCAT.

Our adult programming has seen substantial growth and achievement throughout 2023. ConnCAT’s adult programs have earned certification from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education through 2025, reaffirming our commitment to providing high-quality education and training.

As a result of the ongoing success in this area, we celebrated the achievements of 30 graduates who completed our adult programs, marking another year of impact and empowerment. In Summer 2023, Cohorts 23 in Phlebotomy and 10 in Culinary successfully completed their programming and externships, contributing to a pool of skilled professionals in their respective fields.

Our commitment to youth development remained unwavering in 2023, with several initiatives and partnerships aimed at empowering the younger generation. Through a number of generous grants, we’ve been able to fortify our offerings and ensure our students have the best resources available to support their continuous success.

ConnCAT received a grant from the United Way to support our youth Summer programming, enabling us to provide enriching experiences for young minds. A substantial grant from CT Humanities facilitated the upgrade of our Mac Lab, equipping it with 18 new Mac Computers, 20 new PCs, laptops, printers, and other technological enhancements. This not only revitalized the defunct computer lab but also paved the way for the implementation of 3D printing. As a result, six students participated in a 3-day 3D printing class, generously provided by Funbotics. After completion, these students received printers to continue their learning at home.

Our commitment to collaboration and community involvement has been at the forefront of our efforts in 2023.

From hosting a roundtable with Senator Cory Booker and State Treasurer Erick Russell exploring and discussing baby bonds, to collaborating with Pathways to Wellness to address topics of

loss, grief, transition, and rebuilding, we’ve utilized partnerships and collaboration to adopt a culture of continuous improvement.

In the realm of economic development, we are proud to report that our initiatives have continued to uplift the Black community here in New Haven. Through strategic partnerships and innovative programs, we have empowered individuals with skills, resources, and opportunities to thrive in the local economy. Our entrepreneurship workshops and small business support initiatives have fostered sustainable growth and created a positive ripple effect within the community.

The arts remain a powerful vehicle for expression and empowerment. Our commitment to fostering creativity and cultural enrichment has resulted in a myriad of artistic endeavors that celebrate the richness of Black culture. From exhibitions and performances to community art installations, ConnCAT has served as a catalyst for artistic expression, contributing to a vibrant and culturally diverse New Haven. This work laid the foundation for the opening of Orchid Gallery in 2024.

local culinary talent and supporting food-related entrepreneurship, we are contributing to the growth of the local food industry and enhancing the culinary landscape of New Haven.

As we embark on the new fiscal year, we are filled with optimism and determination. We remain committed to our mission of empowering the Black community through economic development, arts, technology, and culinary arts. Your continued support will play a pivotal role in helping us realize our goals and make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

Recognizing the importance of biotech in the modern world, we have implemented initiatives aimed at bridging the bio divide within the Black community. Through our BioLaunch program, we are equipping individuals with the skills and tools necessary for success in the quickly growing bioscience industry.

Our BioLaunch program, introduced in 2023, has already seen remarkable progress. Cohort 1 has completed training and is currently enrolled in a 2-month externship program, while Cohort 2 commenced training with 10 enthusiastic participants.

Our culinary arts programs have not only provided culinary skills training but have also served as a platform for economic empowerment. By nurturing

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for being an integral part of the ConnCAT and ConnCORP family of businesses. Your belief in our mission has fueled our efforts and inspired positive change in the lives of many.

Together, we are making a difference, and I look forward to the continued journey ahead.

Serving Success: Chef Shayne Miller’s Remarkable Rise

In the vibrant culinary scene of New Haven, Connecticut, one name stands out for its unique blend of talent, dedication, and passion: Shayne Miller.

As the Assistant Culinary Chef Instructor of ConnCAT, Shayne’s journey embodies the transformative power of education and practical experience in the culinary arts.

Shayne’s story begins as a culinary student at ConnCAT’s renowned Culinary Arts Program. Like many aspiring chefs, Shayne had a burning desire to master the craft of cooking. Through ConnCAT’s immersive curriculum, he gained invaluable skills, from knife techniques to flavor pairing, under the guidance of seasoned professionals in the industry.

Upon graduating from ConnCAT, Shayne embarked on a culinary journey across the country, working in kitchens recognized for their innovation and excellence.

Shayne’s journey took an unexpected turn in July 2023 when he embraced a new challenge as a private contractor for a company tasked with refining operations at the Graduate Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin. Far from home and his daughter, Shayne navigated this opportunity with grace and skill, identifying and redirecting any operational discrepancies with finesse. Despite the distance, Shayne’s commitment to excellence shone through, earning him both financial success and valuable insights into the intricacies of the culinary industry.

Where are they now?

Martin to lend his expertise to a series of open houses in September. It was during this time that Shayne’s journey came full circle as he was offered a position assisting Chef Jenna with Cohort 11, serving as a guiding light for the next generation of culinary talents.

For nearly a decade, Shayne immersed himself in the fastpaced and demanding environment of professional kitchens. Each experience, whether in bustling restaurants or high-end hotels, added layers to his expertise, shaping him into a chef of remarkable caliber. Yet, it was his roots at ConnCAT that laid the foundation for his success.

At ConnCAT, Shayne not only learned the technical aspects of cooking but also cultivated a deep understanding of the artistry behind each dish. He embraced the philosophy of using food as a medium for storytelling, blending flavors and textures to create memorable dining experiences.

Returning to ConnCAT, this time as the Assistant Culinary Chef Instructor, Shayne brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a relentless pursuit of culinary excellence. He serves as an inspiration to current students, demonstrating that with dedication and perseverance, dreams can indeed become reality.

However, Shayne’s heart remained tethered to his roots and his community. A preplanned commitment awaited him back in New Haven, where he played a pivotal role as a Food Vendor at the 2nd Black Wall Street Event on the New Haven Green in August 2023. This event marked a significant milestone for Shayne, showcasing not only his culinary prowess but also his unwavering dedication to his family and his burgeoning catering business.

Indeed, Shayne’s entrepreneurial spirit burns brightly, fueled by his participation in the Collab Food Business Accelerator program, which began just as the pandemic struck. Despite the challenges posed by the global crisis, Shayne remained resolute in his goal of running his own catering service. His vision, coupled with his relentless determination, sets the stage for a future filled with promise and opportunity.

Following the success of the Black Wall Street Event, Shayne returned to ConnCAT, where he reunited with Chef Jenna

In his role, Shayne is not just crafting dishes; he’s crafting opportunities for the next generation of aspiring chefs. He actively mentors students, sharing his wisdom and guiding them on their own culinary journeys. Through his leadership, ConnCAT continues to be a beacon of hope and empowerment for the community.

Shayne’s culinary journey is a testament to the transformative impact of education and hands-on experience. From his beginnings as a student at ConnCAT to his current role, Shayne embodies the spirit of innovation, creativity, and resilience that defines ConnCAT’s mission.

As we reflect on the past year, Shayne’s story reminds us of the power of education to change lives and uplift communities. With him at the helm, ConnCAT’s culinary program continues to thrive, nurturing the talents of future chefs and enriching the culinary landscape of New Haven and beyond.

With each step he takes, Shayne continues to embody the values of resilience, innovation, and community that define ConnCAT’s mission.

Flowing With Phlebotomy

Nicole Bowers’ Journey After ConnCAT

Among our many success stories at ConnCAT is Nicole Bowers, whose transformative journey through the phlebotomy program serves as a testament to ConnCAT’s impact.

Nicole, a native of New Haven, embarked on her educational journey at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Following her college years, she joined Teach for America, which led her to Atlanta, Georgia, where she taught middle school science for four years. However, a desire to be closer to family prompted her return to Connecticut in 2008.

It was during a period of unemployment that Nicole’s aunt introduced her to ConnCAT’s phlebotomy program. Nicole recalls, “My aunt told me about the phlebotomy program that was being offered at no charge, that they would train you to become a phlebotomist, and that they had ties and sponsorship with Yale New Haven Hospital and other entities.” Intrigued, she applied and was accepted into the program’s second cohort.

Under the guidance of instructors like Shukkriyah Hasan, Nicole found herself in an environment that fostered not only skill development but also a sense of community and accountability. “Upon walking into ConnCAT, there was a feeling of family and welcomeness,” Nicole reflects. “They were truly invested in preparing people for careers they could sustain their families on.”

The rigor of the program, coupled with the unwavering support of ConnCAT’s leaders, instilled in Nicole a newfound confidence. She notes, “From a confidence standpoint, Erik Clemons and Mrs. Hasan continually poured into me and helped me to build my confidence in my ability to see things and do things beyond what I was doing at the time.”

Nicole’s experience with ConnCAT proved to be life-changing. Equipped with the skills acquired through the phlebotomy program, she was able to move into the next phase of her career “Because of the phlebotomy skills that I had learned at ConnCAT, I was able to secure

16

employment at Yale New Haven Hospital,” Nicole explains.

However, Nicole’s journey didn’t stop there. Inspired by her experiences at ConnCAT, she pursued further education, earning her associate’s degree in nursing. With ConnCAT’s support, Nicole seamlessly transitioned into a nursing role at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she continues to make a difference today.

Reflecting on her journey, Nicole remains grateful for the opportunities afforded to her by ConnCAT. “I am just immensely proud to have been a part of the ConnCAT family,” she says. “I’m proud of all of the growth and development that they have done.”

For Nicole, ConnCAT isn’t just a program—it’s a lifeline. “ConnCAT has always said that they were invested in New Haven and the growth and development of this area,” she emphasizes. “They are people of their word, and it’s a really great feeling to know that at some point I was a part of that legacy.”

As Nicole looks ahead, she remains committed to paying it forward, serving as a mentor and advocate for others seeking to follow in her footsteps. “I believe in giving people the opportunities because I’ve been blessed and been given opportunities,” she says. “Blessed to be a blessing, kind of thing.”

Nicole’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and community support. Through ConnCAT, she not only found a path to success but also discovered a family that continues to uplift and empower individuals in New Haven and beyond. Where

are they now?

By 2022, our strategic initiatives yielded positive results, gaining visibility and capturing market share. The substantial backing of ConnCAT and ConnCORP, coupled with our established personal connections and relationships, contributed significantly to our success. The rebranding of our identity to Orchid Hospitality in 2023 marked a transformative phase, accompanied by substantial team expansion from 5 to 30 employees.

Technological Advancements and Operational Enhancements

Our commitment to excellence is evident in upgrading our catering platform to Perfect Venue, a pivotal tool instrumental in our growth. This platform seamlessly converts leads into confirmed contracts, enhancing our overall efficiency. Our website (www.orchidhospitality. events) was also transformed, featuring a dynamic landing page and integration with Perfect Venue. This integration facilitated rapid responsiveness, enabling us to produce proposals within minutes and streamline our contract negotiation process.

Our utilization of technology at Orchid Hospitality is multifaceted, encompassing various aspects to enhance our operational efficiency and guest satisfaction. One prominent facet is our strong presence on social media platforms, where we actively engage with our audience, share updates, and create a vibrant online community.

In addition to our social media endeavors, we have implemented advanced technological solutions to streamline our internal processes. Our inventory management system, MarketMan, seamlessly integrates with our Point of Sale (POS) system, Clover. This integration ensures real-time data synchronization, optimizing inventory control.

Complementing this, our deployment of the Homebase schedule system further exemplifies our commitment to technological innovation. Integrated with our POS system, Homebase enables efficient staff management by providing a platform for shift trading among team members. This fosters a collaborative work environment and minimizes the challenges associated with last-minute schedule changes, such as calling in sick or unexpected no-shows.

The combined use of MarketMan, Homebase, and Perfect Venue enhances our operational efficiency and contributes to creating a more dynamic and responsive workplace. These technologies empower our staff, allowing them to adapt to changing circumstances seamlessly and focus on delivering exceptional service to our guests. Through the strategic integration of technology across various facets of our operations, Orchid Hospitality remains at the forefront of innovation in the hospitality industry.

Diverse Catering Engagements

Orchid Hospitality has been a proud participant in a diverse array of catering events, including engagements with prominent institutions such as Clifford Beers, Yale University, Yale Medical School, Southern Connecticut State University, Monitor My Health, Arts and Ideas, Promising Scholars Award Dinner, weddings, family gatherings, BBQ events, and various nonprofit board meetings. Our collaboration with Monitor My Health involved successfully providing 6,000 healthy meals to five camps in the greater New Haven and Bridgeport areas over the summer. The venture’s success resulted in acquiring a year-long contract, committing us to provide 25,000 healthy meals per month, potentially increasing to 35,000 meals.

Petals Market: A Culinary Haven

Petals Market, our neighborhood haven where communities intersect, offers an array of fresh fruits, vegetables, groceries, pizzas, and sandwiches. Leveraging third-party delivery platforms such as DoorDash, UberEats, Slice, and Snackpass, we have expanded our reach to cater to a broader audience.

Future Outlook

With the formidable infrastructure and the organizational bandwidth to execute at the highest level, we anticipate propelling next year’s sales to unprecedented heights. The catering hall at ConnCORP stands poised to emerge as another lucrative revenue stream, solidifying its position as a vital component of our profit center. As we reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, the future unfolds with immense promise and a wealth of possibilities for Orchid Hospitality.

ConnCAT prograMming

Medical Assistant Program

We will take a proactive step in meeting the industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals. The program will equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field of medical assistance while helping to address the shortage of qualified professionals in the greater New Haven area.

Phlebotomy program evening/night program

The phlebotomy program has an extensive waiting list, indicative of its popularity and the pressing need for more opportunities in this field. We are actively pursuing an evening/night program in response to this demand. This expansion will not only accommodate those unable to attend during traditional hours but also enhance accessibility and flexibility for aspiring phlebotomists.

By introducing an evening/ night program, we aim to cater to individuals with diverse schedules, including working adults, parents, and individuals with daytime commitments. This initiative aligns with our commitment to providing inclusive educational opportunities that empower individuals to pursue their career goals without constraints.

ConnCAT Place on Dixwell

We’re developing a state-of-the-art mixed-use retail, residential, and cultural hub in Dixwell’s Historically Black Community Center, rooted in restorative economic development.

ConnCAT Place on Dixwell will include a diverse cross-section of uses to deliver a vibrant, high-quality, compelling, and sustainable mixed-use environment which will not only transform Dixwell Plaza but will serve to catalyze transformation throughout the entire Dixwell Avenue corridor and adjacent neighborhoods.

Our investment of $220 million in the development of ConnCAT Place will create immediate economic impacts due to the construction activity as well as long-term benefits from the ongoing economic activity that will be possible due to this project.
