A sun-kissed corner of

FRANCE If you’ve set your travelling sights on the south of France, your two best options are glamming it up on the coast, or heading for the hills. Justin Fox picks his favourite nooks of the French Riviera and Provence’s back country.

travel

The air is shrill with cicadas, and the occasional helicopter making a breakfast run for croissants from the deck of an anchored superyacht.

T

he French Riviera holds an irresistible allure. With it’s postcard beaches and warm sea, olive groves and vineyards, medieval towns and tangled alleyways, travellers have been drawn to its beauty for centuries. The Riviera stretches from

Nice to Monaco along a spectacular coast, with cliffs plunging into the sea, vertigoinducing roads, secret coves, hilltop villages and some of the best cuisine in the world. It can be expensive, but it’s one of those places you’ve got to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Getting there and around You’ll need a Schengen visa if you’re on a South African passport. Nice and Marseille airports have daily flights to and from major hubs such as Paris and London. Check out www.travelstart.co.za for good deals on flights, especially with budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet. All the top car-hire brands (Avis, Hertz, Europcar) have outlets at the main airports and towns.

USE YOUR SANLAM REALITY BENEFIT Heading overseas? Reality Plus members can enjoy free access to the Bidvest Premier Lounge at SA’s major airports – don’t forget to use your voucher codes received via email to get access.

home

Detox your home

Are we unwittingly turning our homes into toxic traps? Gillian Warren-Brown takes a closer look at the chemicals and other nasties that can affect your family’s health, and offers some alternatives. Why not give these options a try? Cleaning agents • White vinegar or cider vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle will do a great job of cleaning most surfaces and killing certain bacteria. • Bicarbonate of soda is an effective oven cleaner and removes odours from your home, and half a cup mixed in a bucket of water works well for cleaning tile floors.

Pesticides • To keep mosquitoes at bay, burn citronella or lemongrass scented candles or essential oils. • Spray ants and cockroaches with soapy water or sprinkle diatomaceous earth (from a home or garden centre) in insect hideouts.

money

prosper

Tackle your bad money habits and

Bad money habits can mean the difference between gnashing your teeth during sleepless nights and forging ahead in life. Helen Ueckermann explains how to aim for the latter. For richer or poorer if you are married or living with someone, use the power of two to get ahead financially: • Define your shared money goals. This leads to peace of mind and a healthier relationship. • Stick to your money plan. Life happens and you need to adjust to unexpected or planned changes. A plan reminds you of your aims and how to reach them. Update your financial plan annually to make sure you’re still on track towards reaching your dreams. • Share the costs. From purchasing a home to going grocery shopping, combining incomes and sharing expenses make life easier. • Discuss your needs. Both partners need to be involved in decisionmaking to avoid disappointment and bitterness later on.

Running

Spinning

If you love the feel of your feet hitting tar or trail, but need some group motivation, then consider joining the Park Run phenomenon (www.parkrun.co.za). It’s taken off quickly globally, and it offers a free plan to get into decent running shape. Every week a 5km time trial is held around the country in parks and open community areas – all you need to do is sign up and they’ll provide your times each time you take part.

For cyclists, mountain bikers and triathletes who can’t get their two-wheeled fix in the outdoors – or just want an intense, quick leg-burning session – there are a few gym options to get your cadence and heart rate up. Planet Fitness has its popular RPM classes and Virgin Active offers daily spinning classes. Either way, you get a high-paced energetic workout combined with motivational music that’ll leave you breathless (and with shaky legs).
