Celebrate Africa

ABOVE: Escape into the South American jungle, with the Amazon-inspired colour – Jungle Adventure – by Plascon.

The colour of escapism “Tropical is the 2015 trend that appeals to me in particular,” says Plascon’s colour manager, Anne Roselt. As hosts of the FIFA World Cup last year and the Olympics in 2016, Brazil, and particularly its rain forests, has been a source of inspiration for many designers. “We’re bombarded by so much digital information, that the allure of the rainforests allows us a feeling of escapism. Green colour-blocked furniture, water-colour effects and painted ceilings are some of the techniques related to this trend.”

Bielle Ross, editor of Elle Décor says ‘Africa rising’ is her top trend. “This drop-deadgorgeous country of ours is quite literally pulsating with unbridled creativity, potential, talent and enthusiasm. The colours, patterns, textures, narratives and materials of a characteristically African aesthetic are being celebrated, reinterpreted and reimagined to extraordinary effect by designers.”

potty Containers offer creative gardeners unlimited options and surprising practical benefits, as Tracy Melass explains.

Top three things to do Nick Stodel is head of Stodels Garden Centres and president of the International Garden Centre Association. His top three tips are: • Give your potted garden a fortnightly boost with a seaweed-based plant tonic to promote stronger, healthier plants that are more able to cope with stress. • Liquid feed them every two to three weeks to promote lush, healthy growth and lots of flowers. • Cut back any dead or faded flowers to promote more blooms and tidy up yellow or straggly looking foliage to keep your potted plants in tiptop condition.

How to

cook better Two self-taught home chefs with a flair for food and a quirky sense of humour decided to put their trial-by-error wisdom down on paper in a new cookbook titled Cook. Better. Brandon de Kock and Nikki Werner share their insights… HOW TO MATCH PASTA SHAPE TO SAUCE Smooth sauce = long skinny pasta For a smooth sauce that will cling to lengths of pasta, like a plain tomato sauce or creamy carbonara, choose spaghetti or linguine (which looks like flattenedout spaghetti but actually has an elliptical shape). The thinner the noodle, the stickier the sauce must be.

Chunky sauce = short pasta If your sauce is chunky, serve it with shells that scoop up sauce as you toss them around the bowl, or tubes – like macaroni or penne – where sauces slide down into the hollow centres. Sauce is also trapped by the corkscrew shape of fusilli and sticks to the rough, ridged surface of penne rigate.

Meat sauce = long wide pasta Wider, fatter noodles are somewhere in between because the pasta is wide enough to hold rich, heavy meat sauces – the kind that’s more of a slowcooked stew, where the meat is shredded and tossed with its sauce and the pasta. If you want a long noodle, go for tagliatelle or pappardelle.

Kruger’s best rest camps

The Kruger National Park is even more South African than braaivleis and rugby. It’s our cherished jewel and one of the world’s great game reserves. Justin Fox sniffs out its top five rest camps.

travel

Olifants The gorgeous Olifants Camp is perched on a koppie, which stands tall beside a bend in the Olifants River.

Letaba For many Kruger faithfuls, Letaba (meaning river of sand in Sotho) is a favourite camp.

Satara Satara is a large camp in the heart of lion country. Facilities include a shop, cafeteria, restaurant, garage and laundrette.

Lower Sabie A commanding location on the south bank of the Sabie, one of the few perennial rivers in Kruger, Lower Sabie has great views of the stream and Lebombo Mountains beyond.

Tamboti If you’re not keen on the (relative) hustle and bustle of the bigger camps, try one of the smaller bush camps.

TOURING TIPS Walking, taxis and the subway are the three best ways of getting around New York. If you’ve got a smartphone, you can use apps to plan your trip. There are many good free ones, such as Moove It and TripGo. These usually combine public and private options to give you the best plan for your budget and convenience. New York Pass is a tourist card that saves you time and money when out sightseeing. Cardholders get free entry to 80 attractions and can skip the long ticket queues (www.newyorkpass.com).

‌ and the kitchen sink Few of us can afford the largest of the SUVs, which means travelling with the whole family and their kit can be a challenge. Peter Frost hunts for other ways to travel with the kitchen sink. TRAILER TIPS Check your licence. To tow anything over 750kg (the normal weight of a small trailer) you need an EB licence. Insurers will not pay out in the event of an accident if you have the incorrect licence. Temporary EB licences can be applied for if the holiday season is too close to take the test. Load a trailer correctly, with the weight distribution so that the front, where the tow hitch is, is around 75kg. Pick it up to check:

if it is too heavy or too light you need to rearrange the contents. Remember, too light is worse than too heavy, as it will put backwards pressure on the tow hitch over bumps. Buy a trailer cover, even if the trailer lives in a garage – condensation and dust take a heavy toll on a stationary vehicle and your smart accessory will very quickly deteriorate. Wash it regularly too.

wellness

Always online isn’t always good If you’re too wired into work, feel like you’re ‘always on’ and can’t get downtime even when you’re at home, you’re ready for a digital detox. Tracy Melass plugs in.

T

he scenario is all too common: it’s dinner with good friends, the conversation’s engaging, and yet each of you glances at your phone every few minutes. When there’s a lull in chatter while you order, chances are you sneak a peek at that all-important email, or scramble for your handset when you hear the distinctive ping of a WhatsApp message. These are the warning signs of a digital junkie, or at least someone on the road to addiction. As cellphones, particularly smartphones, and laptops have become ubiquitous, the truth is we’re struggling more and more to know when to switch off.

The magic of

household insurance

Imagine taking the roof off your home and turning it upside down – everything that falls out of your house constitutes your home contents

money

Insurance can seem like a real bugbear. But when things go pear shaped, a good insurer is like a magical helper waving a wand to make everything right again. Just follow these basic principles. By Helen Ueckermann. Know your contents An easy way to determine which items fall under house contents is to imagine taking the roof off your home and turning it upside down – everything that falls out of your house constitutes your home contents. Here are some examples: • Furniture, furnishings, carpets and rugs, linen, blankets, towels • Electrical items such as TVs and DVD recorders • Clothes and shoes • Toys and sporting equipment • Handyman tools such as drills and saws • Gardening equipment When you explain to your insurer what you need to insure, you can’t be vague about it. You need to be precise about what you need cover for, as well as the value of the items.
