BERNARDO CONTRERAS

The studio's first prompt consisted of our own interpretation of an art piece. The piece I chose to experiment with was "Strips and Strings" by Mary Lee Bendolph (Seen to the left). Once we had an interpretation of the painting, we were tasked with creating reproduction and improvement pieces of the painting along with a 3D model of it. The main challenge of the remix pieces was the fact that we had to reuse the main qualities of the painting to create a piece that held a connection to the original. Once we got to the 3D aspect of the assignment the prompt changed forcing us to now create a form that held a familiarity to that of the reproduction and improvement pieces we had created prior to the models. This art piece was interesting to work with as there was nothing in particular that stood out, everything was one chaotic mess, without a dominant orientation.
Throughout architecture light plays a vital role as well as shadows. To do this we chose 3 images and recreated them to understand how light works in different habitats. The studio was tasked with creating a light vessel to study the qualities that light is capable of creating. The vessel created was focused on the study of the light quality it created rather than the shadows produced. My design began as a triangular prism with both ends removed. One of the ends had slits that intercepted each other in varying angles. The model also included a colored wall to create a glowing quality once the light shined through the slits.
Our third prompt asked us to design a courtyard between the architecture building and the library. The design of the courtyard was left for us to decide, it could be anything as long as we had intent and a good reasoning for our ideas. I chose to design a skatepark outside the library with shrubs and hedges with the prime utilization of sound absorption and privacy.
In addition to our courtyard we were asked to design a pavilion that took inspiration from a sukkah. This pavilion was to fit seamlessly with both the look and theme of the site. My pavilion design provided for a break from the action on the opposite side of the hedges. This pavilion was designed as a space where one could walk inside and sit down and cool down.
