Odessa P.S. students challenge for change BEAVER STAFF Right now, students in Odessa Public School’s Challenge Program are aiming for something other than just a good mark. As part of their annual ‘Challenge for Change’, students are working hard to advance good causes in the area. One of those events is coming up this weekend, with students Makenzi Montpetit and Matt Thompson organizing a toy drive at the Strathcona Paper Centre this weekend. The drive is being held at the same time as the eighth annual Combo Tournament. Toy donations can be dropped off at the SPC this Friday, Saturday or Sunday; donations will go to the Salvation Army Toy Drive, just in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, in early December, Shalisa Barton is holding two self-esteem building workshops for girls up to Grade 8 at Grace United Church. The workshops will take place on Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 in the church basement. The sessions run from 6-8 p.m. “We will have ice breakers, snacks and selfesteem raising activities by guest speakers, said Barton. “There are a lot of girls who think they have to wear makeup and change themselves to fit in. We want to show girls that it’s not the case. Seth DuChene-Staff

Heather Brown (left) and Nancy Adams knew they wouldn’t run out of stock to sell at the Salvation Army Christmas Bazaar at the church on Saturday, keeping their needles busy to keep up with demand. The fundraiser to support the Salvation Army attracted about 15 vendors — including Brown and Adams — who filled up the church basement with a variety of items for sale.

Among the guest speakers will be Alyssa Goodfellow of Lennox and Addington 4H. Barton says that, so far, she’s getting a lot of positive feedback from girls who are planning to attend. Letters are also being sent to local schools to advise students that the workshops are happening. She says that she’s hoping to have 30 girls attend each session. “The workshop is 100 per cent free. We just ask the girls to come with a positive attitude, she said. For information, contact shalisac4c@gmail.com.
