Rising waters prompt flood warnings BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Shoreline property owners are urged to stay on alert this week as water levels across the Quinte and Cataraqui watersheds are still dangerously high. A rain-soaked weekend coupled with high winds across the Great Lakes have caused both the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority and Quinte Conservation to issue flood warnings on Tuesday that will stay in place through at least today. A flood warning means flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities and could lead to damage to property and road closures. Though the flood warning remained in place, there was good news on Tuesday for municipalities along the Moira, Napanee and Salmon Rivers. “All of the major river systems in our watersheds have peaked overnight,” Quinte Conservation general manager Terry Murphy said in a release on Tuesday. “If we do not get any major rainfall residents should start to notice a continual drop in water levels on the rivers. Napanee OPP report that they were contacted to respond to a complaint of dog that had been barking for more than five hours at a residence in Tamworth. At this point, nothing is going to dent Caleb Fitchett’s chances of participating at the Skills Canada National Competition later this month in Winnipeg. Fitchett, a Grade 12 student at Napanee District Secondary School, qualified to participate in the auto collision repair category thanks to a gold-medal performance in the Skills Ontario competition in Toronto last week. “I’m nervous and excited,” he said when asked about competing in Winnipeg. Fitchett has been honing his skills in the tech wing of the high school for the better part of three years now. Although he competed at the Limestone skills competition last year, this was his first time making it to the provincial competition, let alone the national competition. “It was a great experience, and it was really cool to see all the different set-ups for different competitions,” said Fitchett of the provincial competition. “It was really cool to work with something that you never get to work with, new equipment and what not.” At both the national and provincial competitions, students’ skills will be put to the test in dozens of different skilled trade and technology categories. The auto collision repair competition lasted one day. During the contest, Fitchett said he had very little opportunity to see what his fellow competitors were doing, or judge how he might be faring against them. “I felt pretty good, but I really had no idea (how I was doing),” he said. Despite the fact he’s one of the best students at auto collision repair in the country, Fitchett isn’t going to pursue it as a career beyond high school. Instead, he’ll be studying to be a heavy equipment technician at Fleming College starting next year. Although it might be something he does as a side job, “I just do the autobody part for fun and personal experience,” he said. That’s not to say he’s not taking seriously the competition at the end of the month — he’s even practicing “a few days a week” at the school to make sure he’s at the top of his game.

SPWC ‘Baby Shower’ set for Mother’s Day BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Considering Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre staff and volunteers play the role of ‘mom’ to hundreds of orphaned animals, it just seems fitting that their annual baby shower fundraiser would fall on Mother’s Day. Sunday’s event marks the one time a year the wildlife rescue centre opens its doors to the public, inviting visitors to get a first-hand look at the work they do. Volunteer staff will demonstrate how they feed the many patients in their care, which include the likes of baby squirrels, turtles, several species of birds, reptiles, an assortment of farm animals and many more. Live entertainment will run throughout the day, starting with local band the Fade Kings taking the stage at 10 a.m. The Andrew Mack Band will follow. Kingston’s Canine Unit will also be on hand to demonstrate how they work with dogs to disarm suspects or search out an illegal substance. A barbecue, face painting, pony rides and baby farm animals will also be on site to create something for everyone. For the adults there will be vendors, draws and a silent auction.

The Baby Shower is critical to the success of Sandy Pines, as it’s their biggest fundraiser of the year. The past year has been a busy one, as they field close to 100 calls a day from people all across the province who are reporting a animal in distress. Sandy Pines is a rehabilitation centre, providing veterinary care and shelter for wild animals of all shapes and sizes. Whenever possible, they will nurse them back to health and release them back into the wild. Admission to Sunday’s event is free, though donations will be gladly accepted. They have also included a wish list of needed items which includes unsalted almonds, nuts, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, bird seed, masking tape, duct tape, bungee cords, toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, disposable gloves, rubber gloves, postage stamps, dish soap, liquid laundry detergent, XL garbage bags and computer paper. Sandy Pines is located at 8749 County Rd. 2 in Napanee. The baby shower runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Founded in 1994, they care for about 3,400 mammals, birds and reptiles each year, relying on the support from over 200 volunteers and donations from the public.

Spotlight to shine on local artists at showcase BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Greater Napanee’s artistic community is coming together next week — and they’d like you to join them. The Greater Napanee Arts and Culture Committee is hosting its first-ever Spring Arts and Culture Showcase this coming Wednesday at the Strathcona Paper Centre. The event runs from 3-7 p.m. Whether you’re an artist or someone who’s interested in the arts, “it’ll be great for everyone to attend,” says Greater Napanee Economic Development Co-ordinator Lyndsay Tee, one of the event’s organizers. “There will be artists of all different kinds coming to showcase their work, and artists will be there to talk about what it is that they do. It’ll be a great social, networking opportunity, and a chance for people to see, hear and experience the art-

“I will have a display up and I’ll have some of the curriculum that I use, as well as some information. I will be there and be able to let people know the kind of things that I’m doing,” she says. “This year has been the beginning of (the business), and I’m just really loving it, and it has grown quite a bit,” Sheffield adds. “I’m getting new students. I’m just hoping to get the word out there a bit more that I’m doing this vocal coaching, and I’m hoping to grow my number of students for next year.” Tee says there’s still room for more artists to participate. “If there are artists in the community interested in participating, they’re welcome to contact me… it’s free to attend as an artist showcasing your work, and it’s also free to attend for the public, to attend and check things out,” she said. Mission work in Africa attracts local volunteers

AKING a charitable donation is one thing, but travelling to a developing nation and seeing the impoverished conditions first-hand is compassion on a whole different level. That’s what Helping Cope Through Hope founders Tom and Cheryl Martin strive to do when they bring their friends and neighbours on weeks and months long mission trips to places such as Zambia, Uganda and Peru. The Napanee couple recently returned from a 10-week trip, during which time they were joined by seven other people from Lennox and Addington County and area. While overseas, they delivered livestock to poor families, helped to establish safe living conditions and paid schooling costs for young students who were at risk of being kicked out of school. “The thing this year that was really amazing in Africa was the people that came with us,” said Tom Martin, who founded Helping Cope Through Hope with his wife back in 2005. “What they did was unbelievable. We (otherwise) wouldn’t have been able to do all of it.” Among those who made the trip was Dan Fleury of

Napanee. Originally just intending to take photos of the volunteers at work, he quickly felt compelled to help after seeing what people were going through. He and his wife Ellena agreed to sponsor a young girl, who in turn decided to change her name to ‘Ellena’ as a token of her appreciation. Fleury also bought and delivered four goats, all on motorcycle, to families in need. “I really didn’t know what I was going to see or get into,” said Fleury. “To see it in their homes and how they live day-to-day was eye-opening.” He says the ability to see his dollars make a difference first-hand was satisfying. “You donate to a foundation and it’s just like writing a cheque,” said Fleury. “It’s neat being able to spend money from my hand to the guy I’m buying chickens from and throwing them in a bag.” Martin says the trips are all about getting people out of their comfort zone and exposing them to how the other side of the world lives. Nicole Sheffield of Forrest Mills put her teaching skills to good use on the trip, volunteering to teach English while counselling at-risk youth. She too sponsored a child in need. from Sunbury also took part in the trip, going from Jan. 19 to April 29, meeting with a young girl they sponsor in Zambia. While there, they helped to purchase homes for several families as well as cover the cost for school for several young students at risk of being expelled from school. What struck them most about the trip was how mothers would put their own needs ahead of their children when advocating for help from the visitors. “It was just ever so important to them to have their children educated to help break them from the poverty cycle,” said Nancy. “They weren’t afraid to come forward and advocate for their children.” Her husband added that witnessing it first-hand made it easier for them to spend money to help those in need. “I think we have a real clear focus on how we can help them going forward,” he said. “When you see the impact you have on the family, it’s incredible.” To date the Martins have brought 129 people with them on their mission trips, which they typically make once a year. Picturing Our Community

Weather warnings Only a matter of months ago, this region was as dry as it had been in recent (or not-so-recent) memory. Just this last week, rivers and streams were overflowing their banks; water is slowly creeping up to peoples’ homes, businesses and cottages in some areas, and sump pumps are working overtime. Seems a bit erratic, doesn’t it? Scientists who study climate and weather are suggesting these wild swings in extreme weather events will no longer be things we expect once in a generation; these will be more frequent, and potentially more destructive. More droughts, more floods, more windstorms. Paul Beckwith, a climate systems scientist who works with both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, didn’t mince words when he spoke to The Montreal Gazette this week about the flooding that’s hit Quebec and Ontario: “There is a very clear picture emerging that we’ve changed the chemistry of the atmosphere with our greenhouse gases and we are really seeing the consequences now.” Although some still cling to the notion that human activity isn’t to blame for the weather changes we’re experiencing, it’s hard to find anyone who denies that something isn’t happening with our weather. Whether we blame the phenomenon on man-made factors or natural factors, it has become apparent that we need to wrap our heads around the fact that crazy weather is becoming a fact of life, and we have to become better at dealing with it. Natural disasters are (naturally) disruptive events. They’re also costly, both to the public and private purse. However, any preventative measures we can take now might limit the disruption. Ironically, it was only last week (during Emergency Preparedness Week) that Greater Napanee Emergency Services and their counterparts around the province were urging residents to get ready for the next disaster before it hits. Too often, these public appeals are sloughed off. Although this week’s flooding is taking its toll along shorelines, this area seems to be getting off easily compared to other jurisdictions in eastern Ontario and Quebec. We might not be so lucky next time. Perhaps the emergency preparedness message might be better heeded in light of recent events. And, of course, these events should prompt us to consider our collective role in what’s happening with the weather. We’ve heard the warnings that our weather will become more severe if we don’t reduce the carbon we pump into the air; even governments that subscribe to the phenomenon haven’t come close to achieving what scientists say needs to be done to mitigate the problem. The cost of these events, if they continue at this rate (or worse), will add up for governments and for property owners. If we thought the economic cost of tackling climate change was prohibitive, we seem to be getting a peek at what the economic cost of doing nothing is. We can’t help to think that this week’s flooding was a warning shot over our bow. We’ll be interested to see how we, collectively, react to that warning.

Reflections on motherhood Of all the handles that I use to describe myself, ‘mother’ is the one that I am most proud of. It has also been my greatest challenge: it has been unending source of worry, and reduced me to both tears of joy and sorrow; it has frustrated me beyond belief and caused me the greatest fits of laughter. Being a Mom has been a privilege. I have loved it, each and every stage. Becoming a mother was such a monumentally significant event that each precious detail of the day our children were born can be effortlessly recollected. It was impossible not to be overcome by the miracle of creation, when holding our babies, skin to skin, for the first time. Within moments, the contract I made with them was cemented and I willingly embraced the epic responsibility of caring for these new, little souls. I didn’t mind the early years — the lack of sleep, endless diaper changes, breast feeding, bottles, tumbles and tantrums. Our children were born closely together. When our youngest arrived, we had three under three. I was astounded at the remarkable changes that occurred in those first years of life. The hasty developmental transformations from completely helpless infants, to walking, talking little beings within their first

more difficult to deal with though were the disappointments, broken hearts and at times even, broken spirits. Helping them learn to accept life on life’s terms and the inevitable challenges, letdowns and unavoidable failures were probably the hardest things to teach them of all. Celebrating with them when they were doing well was the easy part. It was helping them navigate, when the waters got choppy, that was the truest test of my mettle as a mother. Learning when to hold them up and when to let them go required all of the patience and understanding that I could muster. For me, however, the most difficult phase of all was saying goodbye. I know I wasn’t the best mom, but I was the best mom I could be. It comforts me knowing that, together with Randy, we prepared them for life. Our children are young adults now, with their own unique talents and abilities, setting their own courses. I couldn’t be prouder of them or love them more. I also glean a measure of peace knowing that no matter how old they are, they all still come home, even if it’s just to visit. Whenever they do, I will be here to welcome them, with a listening ear, a hot cup of coffee and a hug — because I am Mom and that’s what moms do!

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago May 7, 1952 ■ Some crafty break-and-enter artists gained entry to a downtown apparel store and helped themselves to hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise. The thieves broke into the Bell-Moore clothing store sometime overnight by using some planks to get from the roof of a nearby storage building to the roof of the store. They then taped a sealed window before breaking it, reducing the sound of broken glass, then hopped inside. Police said they believed more than one person was involved in the break-in. They reported that the thieves made off with more than $1,600 in clothing. ■ The first phase of the construction of a new sewage treatment plant was underway in Napanee. Engineer J. Douglas Lee of Lee & Brooks of Kingston gave town council an update on the progress of the project. He told council that the new outfall sewer had been laid, and work had started on the building of the grit chamber. He said they hoped to have the new facility built by 1953.

35 Years Ago May 5, 1982 ■ It appeared as though it wasn’t just Napanee area schools that were seeing a steady decline in enrolment. According to statistics from the Lennox and Addington County Board of Education, a number of schools in Camden East and Sheffield Township were below capacity. Built to accommodate more than 100, there were only 20 students attending Camden East Public School, while Centreville Public School was built to house 215 students, although only 138 were actually enrolled. Enterprise Public School was at 62 per cent capacity, Newburgh was at 77 per cent capacity and Tamworth was at 52 per cent capacity. ■ Gibbard Furniture Shops announced that its regular three-week summer shutdown would be extended to five weeks this year. Some 157 workers would be affected by the shutdown, which would start in June. Gibbard’s move was mirrored by many other Canadian furniture makers, the vast majority of which were not operating at full capacity. Jack McPherson of Gibbard blamed high interest rates for the drop in furniture orders — those with money were saving, and the cost of borrowing was prohibitively high, he said.

Back for a fourth year, the June 10 showcase caters to young artists who don’t have a wealth of experience showing their work in public settings. ‘Coldest Night’ provides boost to summer camp program

Enduring the chill of a winter’s night back on Feb 25 paid off for Napanee’s Salvation Army, as they raised just under $12,000 during the ‘Coldest Night of the Year’. The fundraiser saw 100 volunteers collect pledges for walking routes that ranged from two, five and 10 kilometres Their final tally for money raised came in earlier this week, with $8,403 of the money collected staying right in the MAY 14 COMMUNITY BREAKFAST Come one, come all to a community breakfast at Emmanuel United Church Hall at 63 Factory St. in Odessa. The overnight camp, which will take place north of Toronto in early August, has just three spots left for any parents or guardians interested in registering their children. The cost is $250 per child, but subsidies are available. Children six to 16 can attend and will partake in activities that build cohesiveness and self confidence. ierra Manley’s late goal wasn’t enough for the NDSS Golden Hawks senior girls soccer team, who fell 2-1 to the visiting Bayridge Blazers on Monday. The Blazers got on the board early, picking up a fluke goal on a bad bounce in the opening 10 minutes. They had a chance to double the lead but keeper Sara Kennedy blocked a penalty kick, deflecting it out of bounds to prevent any rebound. Early in the second half the Hawks had a penalty shot of their own, turning the ball over to Melissa Grooms. She launched a strong shot but was just high, eluding the outstretched goaltender but ringing the ball off the crossbar. Missed chances continued to plague the Hawks throughout the game as they just couldn’t finish their scoring plays. The Blazers doubled their lead after Kennedy made an initial save but was then beat on the rebound. That goal would prove to

Robbed by injuries of a spot on Canada’s U16 travelling rugby team last summer, Erika Barton refused to give up on her dream of representing her country. That grit and determination paid off this spring as the Napanee native came back to earn a spot on Canada’s U18 squad, which will take part in a two game series with the US Aug. 1 and 5 in Ottawa. “It’s an unreal feeling,” Barton said of making the team, which was officially announced on May 3. “It was a rough year (last summer) because I got injured so many times. Making that list, it just all came together.” Barton, who will play in a hooker-flanker role, is one of 24 players who made the list compiled by coach Dan Valley.

She was well on her way to making the squad as a U16 last year, first making the long list before an injury caused her to miss out on making the short list. She was hoping to build on her previous experience of having suited up for Ontario to compete at national tournaments. By her own admission after missing the national cut last year she was devastated and worried that she may have missed her opportunity, forced to sit out of the Ontario Summer Games and miss out on the Ontario provincial program. Despite the setback, she never once considered giving up on her goal. “I had a giant support system behind me, especially (high school coach) Sean (Dunleavy),” said Barton. “It’s something you’re going to keep pushing for if you really want it, and I did.”

The senior boys game went ahead on a turf field, with the Blazers edging the Golden Hawks 3-2. That left the Hawks with a 1-5 record on the season and failed to qualify for the postseason.

Dunleavy, who has coached at the national level and is currently on the Queen’s Golden Gaels women’s rugby coaching staff as well as a coach for the Hawks, recognized Barton’s talent early. Having worked with her for the past five years, he knew she had the potential to make a national team. “I think it’s nice when those hard work stories pay off,” said Dunleavy. “Last spring I thew a challenge at

Didn’t achieve selection to the UK tour and we chatted about it and thought how could we use that as motivation and challenged her for the NDSS season last year. Don’t just be a good player, be the best player around here and the best player at every game and show those skills that got you noticed in the first place, and she did that.” Dunleavy says it’s not just a natural ability that has carried her this far, but also a drive to get better mixed with a humble attitude. “She’s not someone who walks around with the ego of a player who has repre-

sented the province multiple times and is about to represent Canada,” said Dunleavy. “She’s a pretty unassuming player that loves the game.” The international series in August is part of what figures to be an extremely busy summer of rugby for Barton. First on her schedule will be attempting to help the Hawks to a KASSAA title, with playoffs set to get underway tomorrow. Following the high school season she will play for the Kingston Panthers club team, take part in the national training camp and then close out the season at the Guelph Gryphons training camp.

ritt Benn proves to be the exception to the rule that is ‘never meet your hero.’ That’s what the current members of the NDSS Golden Hawks girls rugby team learned recently when their Olympic idol shipped them four boxes full of Team Canada shirts, cleats, socks and headbands. The 2016 bronze medalist donated gently used gear to her former high school as a way to give back and encourage the next crop of

rugby stars. For those that know her, the gift was completely within Benn’s character. “She lives on the other side of the country, travelling the world and competing,” said Hawks head coach Sean Dunleavy. “We’ve always had a ton of respect for her and she’s a huge piece of our early success as a program. Anytime she’s back in town she sticks her head in, but for her to reach out and offer some belongings and equipment to other athletes in need and maintain that connection to us while she’s doing all these

amazing things shows her humility and how much this place still means to her even though she lives in BC.” Dunleavy says the team is still a little unsure how they’re going to divvy up all the gear she has shipped them but says it will go a long way to inspiring young athletes to take up the sport. Benn and her National Sevens Canadian women teammates are currently taking part in the HSBC World Series, getting set to host the next round May 2728 in Langford, BC, site of their training facility.

Thursday, May 11, 2017 OFA Student Bursaries The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is offering three bursaries in the amount of $2,000 per recipient. The bursaries are available for students of OFA families who are entering or currently pursuing a postsecondary education in an agriculture-related program. The bursaries funds were raised at the 2016 Annual General Meeting silent auction. The bursaries will be awarded regionally, including one recipient from each region across Ontario (Northern, Eastern and South-Western). Eligible applicants include students of OFA families from across the province. Applicants should be able to demonstrate volunteer and industry related accomplishments, an interest in agriculture and rural issues, community involvement and satisfactory academic performance.The selected recipients will be announced at the 2017 OFA Annual General Meeting. Springtime in the Rockies Mary Hale grew up in a Latter Day Saints household, and, naturally, was educated in their schools. She graduated from Brigham Young University, where she had been a class officer, and wrote for student publications. She wrote several operettas which were performed by local theatre groups, and on radio. She collaborated with several professional musicians and was the first Utah woman to be accepted in membership in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. At age 16 she wrote a poem, which was inspired by the Utah Lake and Provo Canyon. She called it ‘When It’s Springtime In The Rockies’. She thought it would fit well as a song, so she took it to a music teacher at Brigham Young University, Robert Saur, who wrote music. He glanced over it, promised to look at, but put it aside until he had more time peruse it. She never heard from him. In the meantime, she

That means just because shoreline homes haven’t flooded yet doesn’t mean they won’t — even a few days after this weekend’s massive rainfall. Early forecasts are also calling for showers this weekend. “People on shoreline areas or areas that are flood prone need to be aware of this and take some action,” said Fazackerley. “Most of the response for emergency response is from the municipality so they would contact their municipalities for more information.” Greater Napanee council discussed the matter at its regular council meeting on Tuesday, opting not to call a state of emergency. “There are a lot of residents in this municipality on the lakeshore, Hay Bay, Bay of Quinte and the Napanee River that are lake level,” said councillor Max Kaiser. “They’re very concerned about the water level rising. I don’t think we need to consider a state of emergency but I do think we need to have a dialogue with our provincial and federal counterparts that sees resources made available.” Mayor Gord Schermerhorn agreed that council should talk with local MP Mike Bossio about possible relief for flooding victims, but also urged home owners to secure their property. With many resources being diverted to Quebec, obtaining sand bags is proving difficult for Ontario residents. Fazackerley says concerned homeowners can visit www quinteconservation.ca and www.crca.ca for advice on how to prepare for a flood, where to get sandbags and how to stack them to maximize their effectiveness.
