Ferries, Bridges, the Osage and the Lake

by H. Dwight Weaver

Since the beginning of settlement along the Osage River in the 1830s, travelers have often found the river difficult to get across, not because of deep water or flooding but because of the scarcity of ferries and bridges. After the 1850s ferries began to make their appearance at strategic points along roads that were the most heavily traveled. Suspension bridges (swinging bridges) made their appearance in the late 1800s, the first one being built at Warsaw in 1895. Joe Dice, a native of Warsaw, who helped in the construction of that bridge, later achieved local fame by building more than 30 other suspension bridges. Many of them spanned the Osage River. In Miller County, however, Dice built half a dozen bridges across Tavern Creek. Most of those bridges are now gone, replaced in recent years by modern structures. The coming of Lake of the Ozarks only complicated matters

for the natives and tourists in Benton, Camden, Miller and Morgan counties. Several suspension bridges that spanned the Osage were demolished with the coming of the Lake. Linn Creek’s swinging bridge, a toll bridge that carried State Highway 5, fell victim to the Lake. With its demise, the Gov. McClurg Ferry was established because the Lake severed Highway 5 where it crossed the Niangua River and the Osage River. Bridges at those points were not operational until 1937. After their construction the Gov. McClurg Ferry was out of business. Several other ferries continued to operate for a few years at different locations after the Lake was created but eventually closed. Various communities bordering the Lake and its major arms have, at one time or another, agitated for either ferries or bridges at their locations but have not been able to get county or state support for such projects. For the past 60 years it has been possible to boat Lake of the Ozarks from the Hurricane Deck Bridge to Warsaw without encountering a single car ferry

or passing beneath a single bridge. It seems rather remarkable to think that a bridge needed so badly for so long to connect the east and west sides of the Lake via Shawnee Bend did not get built until the 1990s. Today, the Community Bridge is that link. One can only wonder if any bridge will ever be built anywhere across the Lake between Hurricane Deck and Warsaw.

Gov. McClurg

Never face the facts. if you do you will never get up in the morning. -Marlo Thomas

ELDON, MILLER COUNTY’S LARGEST TOWN, IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST by Peggy Smith Hake Miller County became a reality in 1837 and for many years had very few towns within its borders. In 1850, there were only 4 towns ... Tuscumbia, Iberia, Mt. Pleasant, and Rocky Mount. A map of the county, dated 1875, still only shows Tuscumbia, Iberia, Mt. Pleasant and Rocky Mount. There were small post office settlements throughout the county, but no other established towns. By 1905, a county map shows the towns of Olean, Spring Garden, Etterville, Mt. Pleasant, Rocky Mount, Eldon, Aurora Springs, Bagnell, Tuscumbia, Mary's Home, Charles/St. Elizabeth, Ulmans Ridge, Brumley and Iberia. The town of Eldon was platted 15 March 1882 when it became apparent the railroad would be built there and not at Aurora Springs, which was the county's 'boom town' during those days. George Riley Weeks, a Civil War veteran, came

to Miller Co. circa 1867 from the state of Vermont. George brought his wife, Almira (Joslyn) Weeks and two children to Missouri following the war. Typical of other pioneer families, George and Almira decided they would like to see the “wild and wooly west”. When they settled in northern Miller Co., in Saline Township, they bought land northeast of present day Eldon and built a log cabin as their first Missouri home. Later he bought more land north of Eldon and built a larger frame home for his family. George and Almira had two other children after coming to Missouri, twin daughters, but both died young. George Weeks continued to buy many acres in what is today the city of Eldon. When it was determined that a railroad would be built through the area north of Aurora Springs, George decided to layout and plat a new town to surround the proposed railroad tracks. When the old Missouri Pacific Line (called the Jefferson City, Lebanon, and Southwest

railroad) was constructed through northern Miller County, George donated land to the railway company to build a depot. George Weeks platted the original town of Eldon to contain 109 blocks. The streets, named by George, included: Mill, Maple, Oak, Aurora, Pine, Spruce, Broadway, Locust, Grand, Chestnut, and Walnut (all running north and south). The streets which ran east and west were First Street to Fifteenth Street. By 1905, Eldon had two railroads, the Missouri Pacific, with a depot at Second & Maple Streets, and the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific with its depot located at the corner of Sixth & Maple Streets. George Weeks and Isaac Newton built the Eldon Roller Mills on the site of Gerbes Supermarket. The mill 'fired' and built the bricks for their own use at the mill. Behind the mill building was an old mill pond but today there is no evidence of the pond.

George Riley Weeks (1838-1910) and his wife, Almira (1840-1928) looked beyond their life span in the late 19th century and laid out the future on a parchment sheet when they platted the new town of Eldon in 1882. No one seems to know for a certainty why the name Eldon was chosen. Legend says it was in honor of an English nobleman named Lord Eldon ... if so, he would be proud to see the little city which carries his name today in the late 20th century. NOTE: Sincere thanks to Freda Walker Weeks of Eldon for the above information concerning the beginning of the city of Eldon. Learn more about Eldon at the Miller County Museum, and their website at www.millercountymuseum.org.

routes brought travelers. These facilities encouraged the growth of local industries, including grist mills, flour mills, tanneries, and distilleries. The 1830s saw the influx of German immigrants, who were mostly farmers.

Civil War Brings Strife and Division In 1839, Jefferson City was incorporated as a city, and in 1840 the population stood at 1,174 people, including 262 slaves. A frightening incident took place in 1849, when a ship carrying Mormon church members, some of whom had cholera, landed at the city dock. For two years, the plague infected residents in the area, paralyzing the local trade. In 1855, the Pacific Railroad line was completed between St. Louis and Jefferson City. However, the first trip between

the two cities was a disaster. As residents waited for the president of the railroad and other dignitaries to arrive, a pier collapsed on a bridge that crossed the Gasconade River, and the resulting train accident killed 28 people and injured 30 others. Regular train service did not begin until the next year. The coming of the Civil War (1860– 1865) brought to a head the question of whether slavery would continue in Missouri. While President Abraham Lincoln encouraged an end to slavery, Missouri Governor Claiborne F. Jackson favored the retention of slavery and the secession of the southern states, including Missouri.

assembly would embrace. The convention voted to remain in the Union. But Governor Jackson refused to recognize federal authority and also refused to send troops to fight for the Union Army. Instead, he rallied 50,000 volunteers for the state militia and marched from the capital to join Confederate forces at Booneville. But two days later, Union troops overran Jefferson City and pitched camp on Capitol Hill. In 1864, Confederate General and former Missouri Governor Sterling Price and his men marched to within four miles of the city and announced they would attack. Troops exchanged fire, but in the end Price withdrew and fled westward toward Kansas City, and Jefferson City remained in Union hands. Decades passed before the city recovered from the rifts occasioned by the Civil War. But the Missouri constitution of 1875 restored peace of mind to the citizens and a period of expansion began. Such industries as printing and shoe manufacturing developed in the city, and within ten years a bridge was built across the Missouri River, uniting the pro-South Jefferson City with its pro-North neighbors in Kansas. In 1896, the town of Sedalia tried to wrest the capital from Jefferson City, but the attempt failed when Jefferson City triumphed in a popular vote among Missouri citizens.

government. In 1904, The Supreme Court Building was constructed with funds from the St. Louis World's Fair. The next year St. Mary's Hospital was built. In 1911, street car service began in the city, and a dramatic fire brought the destruction of the old State House. A new one was completed in 1917 and the present Capitol building was dedicated in 1924. For the next forty years, the business of state government business continued to dominate the local scene, throughout the periods of two world wars and the Great Depression. The city slowly continued to grow, as more people left the local farms and gravitated to the city. In 1951, Still Hospital was built, and in 1954 a major prison riot took place at the state prison in Jefferson City. The 1960s saw the construction of Memorial Hospital, the opening of Rex M. Whitten Expressway, and Jefferson City's development as a manufacturing center. In 1983, the John G. Christy Municipal Building opened. A major flood in 1993 caused extensive damage, but by the end of the 1990s the city had fully recovered. Jefferson City, notable for its liveability, and relatively low cost of living and high per capita income, has entered the 2000s with vitality. You will need: 6.3 oz flour 3.2 oz sugar 2.1 oz softened butter 1 egg vanilla extract For the frosting: 7 oz powdered sugar 2 tablespoons of lemon juice 1 packet of small colored candy. Mix the flour, sugar and butter, then add the egg and a few drops of vanilla. Ask an adult to heat the oven to 390°F (medium heat). Place a sheet of parchment paper onto a baking sheet ready for the oven. Roll the dough (0.4 inches thick) onto a table top dusted with flour. Using cookie cutters, cut shapes. Set the cookies you cut out onto the baking sheet. Ask an adult to place the baking sheet in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Spread the frosting over the cookies while they’re still hot and have some fun decorating them with the candy.

Chili for the Family INGREDIENTS 2 pounds ground beef 2 cloves garlic, chopped One 8-ounce can tomato sauce 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 cup masa harina (corn flour, found in the Mexican food section of many supermarkets) One 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed One 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained and rinsed Shredded Cheddar, for serving Chopped onions, for serving Tortilla chips, for serving Lime wedges, for serving

DIRECTIONS Place the ground beef in a large pot and throw in the garlic. Cook over medium heat until browned. Drain off the excess fat, and then pour in the tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt and cayenne. Stir together well, cover, and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. If the mixture becomes overly dry, add 1/2 cup water at a time as needed. After an hour, place the masa harina in a small bowl. Add 1/2 cup water and stir together with a fork. Dump the masa mixture into the chili. Stir together well, and then taste and adjust the seasonings. Add more masa paste and /or water to get the chili to your preferred consistency, or to add more corn flavor. Add the beans and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with shredded Cheddar, chopped onions, tortilla chips and lime wedges.

A Letter from Santa Claus

by Mark Twain Palace of Saint Nicholas in the Moon Christmas Morning My Dear Susy Clemens, I have received and read all the letters which you and your little sister have written me. I can read your and your baby sister's jagged and fantastic marks without any trouble at all. But I had trouble with those letters which you dictated through your mother and the nurses, for I am a foreigner and cannot read English writing well. You will find that I made no mistakes about the things which you and the baby ordered in your own letters--I went down your chimney at midnight when you were asleep and delivered them all myself--and kissed both of you, too . . . . But . . . there were . . . one or two small orders which I could not fill because we ran out of stock .... There was a word or two in your mama's letter which . . . I took to be "a trunk full of doll's clothes." Is that it? I will call at your kitchen door about nine o'clock this morning to inquire. But I must not see anybody and I must not speak to anybody but you. When the kitchen doorbell rings, George must be blindfolded and sent to the door. You must tell George he must walk on tiptoe and not speak-- otherwise he will die someday. Then you must go up to the nursery and stand on a chair or the nurse's bed and put your ear to the speaking tube that leads down to the kitchen and when I whistle through it you must speak in the tube and say, "Welcome, Santa Claus!" Then I will ask whether it was a trunk you

Some things have to be believed to be seen.

ordered or not. If you say it was, I shall ask you what color you want the trunk to be . . . and then you must tell me every single thing in detail which you want the trunk to contain. Then when I say "Good-by and a merry Christmas to my little Susy Clemens," you must say "Good-by, good old Santa Claus, I thank you very much." Then you must go down into the library and make George close all the doors that open into the main hall, and everybody must keep still for a little while. I will go to the moon and get those things and in a few minutes I will come down the chimney that belongs to the fireplace that is in the hall--if it is a trunk you want--because I couldn't get such a thing as a trunk down the nursery chimney, you know . . . . If I should leave any snow in the hall, you must tell George to sweep it into the fireplace, for I haven't time to do such things. George must not use a broom, but a rag--else he will die someday . . . . If my boot should leave a stain on the marble, George must not holystone it away. Leave it there always in memory of my visit; and whenever you look at it or show it to anybody you must let it remind you to be a good little girl. Whenever you are naughty and someone points to that mark which your good old Santa Claus's boot made on the marble, what will you say, little sweetheart? Good-by for a few minutes, till I come down to the world and ring the kitchen doorbell. Your loving Santa Claus Whom people sometimes call "The Man in the Moon"
