Cycling Day raises food and cash for animal welfare Sharoldine Bock
Namib Times won Cycle 4 Animals which was held at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club on Sunday. Yolanda Van der Westhuizen and Leon-Pieter Kuhn organised the event as a fundraiser to support the S.P.C.A. Walvis Bay. “A full tummy goes a long way to make the days easier for animals ending up in the kennels at the S.P.C.A.”, said Yolanda. A total of 230 contestants competed in the 8km cycling, which started at the Yacht Club, along the lagoon to Lovers Hill and back to the Yacht Club. The category 24 km cycling started at the Yacht Club along lagoon to Lovers hill, along the entire outskirts of the Meersig suburb and back to the Yacht Club. The event collectively 70 bags of dogfood, 80 bags of cat food and N$ 12 200 was raised from the entry fees. The plan is to equally distribute the proceeds between the Walvis Bay SPCA and the Feed a Paw Swakopmund. Yesterday, Pukewitz Toyota contributed animal food worth N$ 2 500 which will be donated to the Henties Bay SPCA. After the cycling, music artist Leon Jacobs treated the participants to music. The highlight of the day was when Sasha, a dog from the SPCA Walvis Bay got a home. We wish to thank the following companies for making the day such a big success: ESI, Pupkewitz Nissan, Katja Glöditzsch, Dream World Creations, Guans Packaging, BDO Spencer, Cycle 4 U, Namib Times, Belgian Choclatique, Boetie Bruwer, Ramos Realtors, J + B Estates, Baard Transport, Danny Beukes, Welwitschia Insurance, Freddie Fisheries, Steckels Toyota, Municipality Traffic Department, Western Industrial Supplies, Mica Hardware and Mannie's Bike Mecca. Namib Times walked away with the prize for best dressed team. But, as Yolanda put it - everyone is a winner. The Namib Times cyclist composed out of cyclist who competed years back, somehow it motivated them to start cycling more regularly.
