Message From the Editor Welcome to the premier issue of M The Magazine with REAL Success talk for Men. In this issue we take a look at the top 10 billion dollar sports stadiums in the U.S. The built-in technologies are awesome! Also, did you know there are new ways to brand when marketing to millennials? Listen to branding expert Howard Lim-tell us how. Don’t forget to take a look at the new trends in men’s hair and grooming in the segment called “Cuts’. This issue is loaded with interviews, top features and great information. But before you get started, I’d like to discuss a concept. What is the difference between a swamp and a river? The river has banks whereas the swamp spreads over everything. There are people that function more like rivers- they know where they want to go and they confine themselves to the banks that lead them to their goals. Even in the garden of Eden there was a river called the river Euphrates. On the other hand, there are those people that function as swamps-they spread over everything and cannot hold anything. Some of them can’t even hold a very good conviction. They are everything and nothing at the same time. These are the people that have cluttered desks, piles of paper and say “don't touch anything, I know where everything is. These people are not only Mr. Facing both ways, but they are Mr. Facing many ways. They literally self-sabotage their own lives and those around them. The apostle Paul put it this way, “this one thing I do”, they say “these forty things I dabble in”. Paul left a mark, they leave a blur. My prayer is that we leave a mark in the lives of people that cannot be erased. We are pressing towards the mark of the prize of the high calling. I’m Hamond Bouldin, Editor of M The Magazine with REAL Success Talk for Men and I hope you enjoy this issue. Hammond Bouldin

John William Coltrane emerged as one of the most innovative and influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. Born in Hamlet, North Carolina on September 23, 1926, the son of John Robert and Alice Blair Coltrane, he grew up in High Point, North Carolina where his grandfather, Rev. William W. Blair, an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) minister, was one of the community leaders. John Coltrane’s childhood attendance at his family’s black church shaped the spiritual dimensions of his musical orientation. Following his father’s death and the family’s sudden impoverishment, he and his mother moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1943 to ensure he would have a proper education. Coltrane’s mother Alice worked as a domestic servant while nurturing her son’s musical interest and encouraged him to enroll at the Ornstein School of Music. Coltrane’s musical education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, where he played with a Hawaii-based naval band. By this point Coltrane found that he was increasingly attracted to jazz. After he left the Navy in 1945 he made his professional debut as an artist. Coltrane worked for a number of bandleaders including Dizzy Gillespie and Earl Bostic. As his reputation grew, John Coltrane began to work with the most famous jazz artists of the era. Between 1955 and 1959, he played in a band led by the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis. He also worked intermittently with the famed jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. In 1960 John Coltrane formed a group which eventually became known as the Classic Quartet and put into practice a unique compositional and improvisational technique he had developed based on “modal” playing. Coltrane quickly emerged as the leading jazz tenor saxophonist of the era. Described by some jazz critics as the “high priest” of Page 34 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

avant-garde jazz, Coltrane’s style involved dense, rapidly changing chords with complex extensions built upon each note. Rejecting traditional harmonies, his quartet soon became a platform for introducing new ideas into jazz. John Coltrane’s innovative style was evident on his 1959 album Giant Steps, which remains a marker of musical excellence. Coltrane incorporated African musical traditions, slave spirituals and the blues into his compositions as well as elements of classical European and Indian musical traditions. Coltrane’s ability to draw inspiration from a variety of musical traditions was also evident on his albums India, Ascension, and especially A Love Supreme which was released in 1964 and soon became his most successful recording. By the late 1960s as the post-bebop era emerged, John Coltrane had gained status as the cultural saint of the Black Arts movement. A strong supporter of the civil rights movement, Coltrane’s song Alabama, written in response to the 1963 Birmingham church bombing that killed four little girls, symbolized the fusing of his musical, political and cultural consciousness and stood as a model for the emerging black power/ black consciousness movement of the period. Compositions such as Africa, Liberia, Dahomey Dance, Bakai, Dakar, and Afro Blue celebrated a new black aesthetic and freedom that expressly linked African America with Africa, thus celebrating the pan-Africanist transnational imagination. Coltrane was revered by a younger generation of revolutionary poets and writers who found comfort and inspiration in his music. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 of liver cancer.

Protect Yourself Against Credit Hacking

By Catlin Chin

Why You and Your Children Benefit from a Credit Freeze and How to do it. The question of “Why should I freeze my credit?” has been asked of me quite a few times lately since the enactment of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act. This law which went in effect late September 2018 is mainly known for loosening restrictions placed on banks but also adds a layer of protection for consumers.

However, this new law makes it mandatory for the three credit reporting agencies to allow consumers to freeze their credit as well as release the freeze at any time free of charge.

What Exactly is a Credit Freeze? A credit freeze is when you instruct any one of the credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) to not release your credit information to any third party that requests it. This could be a financial institution, loan

You may recall the Equifax Cyberattack where hackers were able to gain access to personal information for more than 143 million Americans. This included names, addresses, social security numbers, birthdates and drivers license numbers. Some credit card numbers were also compromised.

company, credit card company, insurance company or even a property management company or landlord (if you’re looking for an apartment). Each of the credit bureaus will have to get your express consent for them to release it to the third party.

After the hack, consumers were all looking for ways to freeze their credit. That’s when everyone found out that it costs money, up to $10.00 to freeze your credit as well as to release it, for each of the three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

How Can You be Protected by a Credit Freeze?

Page 40 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

If an unauthorized person steals your identity and tries to open a credit card or get a loan, the credit company will not be able to pull Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

What is not Protected by a Credit Freeze?

your credit report and therefore the thief would immediately be stopped from opening any new accounts with your identity. With the rise in hacking attacks on large corporations and even credit reporting agencies such as Equifax, you cannot be cautious enough in protecting your own identity because possible compromises are beyond your control. One sure way to protect yourself is to put a freeze on your credit report.

Keep in mind that the credit cards you already have will not be protected. Someone can still compromise the credit cards you have and make unauthorized charges. The best way to protect yourself is to limit the number of credit cards you use to keep track of all the charges. Periodically check your credit card accounts to ensure there are no unauthorized charges.

How to Request or Lift a Credit Freeze To request a credit freeze, lift a credit freeze permanently or temporarily, you must visit each of the three credit bureaus. Below are the links to each. • Experian Credit Freeze • Equifax Credit Freeze

How to Protect your Children’s Identity Did you know that more than 1 million children were victims of ID theft last year? It’s amazing how we all think that identity theft only happens to adults. According to statistics, two-thirds of the 1 million victims are children under the age of eight. Protect your children from a lifetime of headaches by putting a credit freeze on their account until they need it. Just remember to safeguard the PIN they are given. The service is also free for all children as well. Protect your future as well as theirs.

Page 41 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

• TransUnion Credit Freeze For each credit freeze you submit, each respective agency will issue you a PIN number which you will need, to release the freeze if needed. Both Equifax and TransUnion will also require you to have your own log-in information as well. As a side note: As the Holidays are approaching, an indirect benefit for me for freezing my credit, which I already did, is that I will not be spontaneously applying for department store credit cards. At least it will make me think twice as I will have to unfreeze my credit to apply. This added step of work will ultimately discourage me from making a purchase for something I probably don’t need anyways… Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

“The one thing about this particular role, that I’m playing (Beau) on “Being Mary Jane”... is that the character, I believe inspires hope...” Morris Chestnut shares that having such a critical role of the two-hour movie finale of the long-running, award-winning BET series, “Being Mary Jane” is an honor and also so much fun. Being Mary Jane” is the story of a successful and very ambitious African American female TV news anchor Mary Jane Paul and her often tricky career navigation with personalities on the job and with her quirky family living initially in Atlanta and later in New York City. Since the debut in 2013, the show developed a worldwide following of loyal fans. Chestnut and Union have worked together before on other projects. He says their “onscreen chemistry is basically fun magic”:

A few hours after the sunrise on a delightful spring morning we enjoyed a conversation with Mr. Chestnut, who was in New York. We learned just how truly charming, gracious and professional he is about his career, colleagues and personal life. Chestnut sharing that she, ‘Mary Jane Paul,’ played Gabrielle Union, is in a particular circumstance on the show finale. Mary Jane is pregnant with the father’s identity uncertain initially and there’s a crucial decision ahead of her.

Page 45 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

Chestnut also says that he hopes that any woman who finds themselves walking a similar path will understand that there is a way forward with inspiration...never give into hopelessness. The series finale of ‘Being Mary Jane’ airs initially April 23, 2019, on BET. https://www.bet.com/shows/being-mary-jane.html

Morris Chestnut is a working Hollywood actor. You can enjoy his incredible on-screen performance in the TV series “The Enemy Within.” Chestnut plays a federal agent who suffers the lose of his fiance’ from a treasonous act of a former CIA agent, who he now has to team with to solve crimes. Source:FootballStadiumDigest Next-generation technology will be key for future NFL growth, with an emphasis on the fan experience during games, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell. Speaking with CNBC at last week’s Allen & Co. Sun Valley conference, Goodell says the plans for future NFL growth has one central component: beefing up WiFi at NFL stadiums and then offering additional services to enhance that fan experience, as well as making fans at home feel like they’re at the stadium: Goodell says technology can be crucial for getting fans into stadiums. Some of that technology is as simple as giving fans the same access to media as they’d have at home. “Simply having Wi-Fi so that they can access their own devices when they come into the stadium,” is key, Goodell said. “They can use that technology to buy a jersey, to buy concessions, to find out the best way to enter into the stadium, or exit the stadium, what the traffic patterns are, what’s going on around the league.” And for fans who can’t make it to the stadium, Goodell said the league is working on augmented reality to provide fans that experience at home. “To see what it’s like to stand behind Tom Brady as he’s looking downfield, to be able to see what it’s like as a running back runs through the line or defender tries to defend a play,” said Goodell. “It’s going to be a new experience that I think is just another great potential for the growth of our league.”

Los Angeles Stadium The Rams and the Chargers The new stadium will be the centerpiece of the Hollywood Park project, which has an estimated price tag of about $5 billion. The cost of the stadium itself was originally estimated at about $2.6 billion. The stadium -- located along South Prairie Avenue, between West Manchester Boulevard and West Century Boulevard -- will have a seating capacity of approximately 70,000, expandable up to 100,000, with 260 luxury suites, more than 13,000 premium seats, and over three million square feet of usable space. The 298-acre overall project will eventually include a performing arts center, hotels, parks, retail shops, restaurants and residences. It's being developed by Rams owner Stan Kroenke. "It would be impossible to build a stadium and entertainment district of this magnitude without incredible and innovative partners who share our ambitions for Los Angeles, our fans worldwide and the National Football League," Kroenke said. "Since breaking ground at Hollywood Park, more than 12,000 people have worked side-by-side on this Page 50 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

project, and we are proud to now have SoFi join us on this journey as we prepare to open in the summer of 2020." "SoFi's commitment to disrupting the status quo within its own industry and becoming a leading innovator in financial services makes them the ideal naming rights partner for our new home," Chargers President of Business Operations A.G. Spanos said. Officials said SoFi Stadium will be the largest stadium in the NFL, and the first indooroutdoor stadium. It will host Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the College Football National Championship Game in 2023, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in 2028. Last month, officials announced that American Airlines will have its name affixed to a 2.5acre entryway plaza leading into the stadium Officials with American Airlines and the LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park did not reveal financial details, but Bloomberg reported that deal was worth $90 million over 10 years. The Allegiant Stadium will provide a worldclass home for the NFL Raiders upon the team’s relocation in 2020. The Mortenson | McCarthy joint venture team will build the $1.9 billion domed stadium, which will also host UNLV Football and a variety of other sporting and non-sporting events. The facility will feature 65,000 seats (expandable to 72,000), a retractable natural turf field, large operable walls that open to spectacular views of the neighboring Las Vegas Strip, and a variety of premium spaces throughout all levels. In addition to the stadium, the site will accommodate tailgating amenities, parking and a mixed-use commercial development. Allegiant Stadium will also serve as site of the Las Vegas Bowl beginning in 2020, which will feature a Pac-12 football opponent versus either a Big Ten or SEC opponent, as well as the 2020 and 2021 Pac-12 Football Championship Game.

The Raiders and Allegiant are also teaming up to provide additional enhancements, rewarding customers and fans with unique in-game and season-long promotions including the "Allegiant Connection of the Game" linking a lucky fan to their favorite Raiders player, and an opportunity to win "Fan Traveler of the Year" honors. The Raiders and Allegiant share a deep commitment to the community which offers even more synergy to the partnership as they will unite in programs and activations that benefit Southern Nevada residents. Headquartered in Las Vegas, Allegiant currently generates nearly $3 billion in annual economic impact for the state of Nevada. Legends Global Partnerships represented the Raiders to secure the naming rights agreement with Allegiant as a part of their duties as the stadium's official premium ticketing and sponsorship's agency.

Building Love in the Digital Media Age

How often have you heard people talk about looking for love and finding love? Those terms make it sound as if love is something you stumble over, full blown like a rose and ready to take home. In reality, love is not quite so simple. It is not something you find hidden in a corner or tucked away in your purse like a surprise five dollar bill. Rather, it is something you build, brick by brick and gesture by gesture.

range for finding a person with whom you can connect is much broader. The Internet has opened whole new worlds, and not just for ecommerce. Your own backyard now extends around the world, and you can easily “meet” someone who lives not just in a different time zone but in an entirely different day than you do. Social media has brought the whole world closer together – but it hasn’t made it any easier to connect with

If that makes love sound like hard work, you’re right – but it’s also joyous work. And it is no different now in the digital media age than it was in the days when your best chance at finding someone to love was asking your sister’s best friend to hook you up with her cousin. You still find someone to love by making connections, and you still build love one interaction at a time. The biggest difference between love BC (before computers) and love today is that the Page 70 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

that special someone, nor to build a life and a lasting love with that person once you’ve connected. So what exactly does it take to build a lasting love in a world where the next relationship is just an IM away, and ending a relationship is as easy as changing your Facebook status and blocking a screen name on your IM? It takes the same things it has always taken, the same things that turned arranged marriages into solid, lasting, lifelong relationships: respect, trust, faith and honesty. It takes living each day together and working with your partner to create the

life the two of you want to live. It means opening yourself up to intimacy and sharing your dreams, hopes and fears with that one special person. It means allowing that one special person into your life to collaborate with you, listening to their dreams and hopes and fears, and allowing them to influence and shape your dreams. Are you still hoping to stumble across your true love and live happily ever after? As long as you expect to just find love, it will continue to elude you. If you truly want love that lasts a lifetime, you’ll need to change the way you think about relationships and prepare yourself to build a solid and lasting partnership based on trust, faith, honesty and respect.

How Leaders Can Destroy the Myth that Followers are Expendable.

Jason Carthan Page 75 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

In the early 1900’s Fredrick Taylor created the notion that organizations should function like machines and that followers represented cogs in the machines. Cogs to be replaced when worn out or no longer of lasting value. Fast-forward to today and that notion of being expeof ndable is still alive and well! Why? Because many traditional business schools still perpetuate that same idea a mechanistic approach to leadership. However, much has changed, most notably, today’s followers and their preferences for leadership styles.

description and roll their eyes at the notion of catering to followers over profits, but the research doesn’t lie as you can see in this Harvard Business Review Article. Followers have a strong desire to follow as much as a leader has a strong desire to lead depending upon the situation and context.

A New Breed of Follower Followers today prefer a more diplomatic and relational environment that fosters the ability to grow into a position while clearly offering alignment with the leader and the company’s mission and vision. Traditional business schools would balk at this Page 76 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

The Leader Needs to Grow Too I have to admit in my early years of leading, I was often trying to find my way when interacting with followers and was driven more by what I thought a leader should look and act like, rather than what best served the follower. It wasn’t until I began to see the tremendous capacity for influence upon others that I began to understand the importance of developing my own leadership philosophy. You see, I understood that my philosophy could be informed by the examples of others, the theories I researched and my own personal experiences, however, it became clear to me that the true test would be found in developing my own perspectives on leadership behaviors through experience. I use the word test because it would involve risks associated with leading well or failing miserably when I interacted with my followers. For that reason, I began to think Page 77 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

deeply concerning my own values and what I hold dear or what I regard with disdain in terms of leader behaviors.

Developing a Leadership Philosophy That being shared, my own personal philosophy of leadership is still evolving based upon situational occurrences with followers and my faith. However, there are certain values and beliefs that must be present when formulating my leadership style preferences. These values include, but are not limited to the presence of what I call, “Relationship Cultivation” or the belief that followers should be first over the company’s bottom line profits. I share this with you today, because it is my strong belief that a leader should develop both a servant mentality and a high level of ethics in order to foster a well rounded and healthy Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

leadership philosophy. The servant leader embodies many of these "Relationship Cultivation" characteristics and seeks to serve followers as they grow and develop.

A Leadership Path Forward How can leaders destroy this myth that followers are expendable and should be replaced at the very first sign of trouble? At a very practical level, leaders can be the

So, what is this ethereal thing called hope and how can it be the catalyst for creating an organizational environment where employees are valued in a significant way? The positive psychological constructs of hope can be defined as a process or endeavor to think about one’s goals and the motivation to take action to achieve them. The Positive Psychology literature reveals this as an overall process that requires two components of goal-directed thought…“agency and pathway.”

Agency and Pathway Thinking Agency thinking is the ability of an individual to

catalyst in their respective organizations by fostering an organizational culture of hope that creates more followers who are actively engaged and bought into the mission and vision of their respective companies. This is a core concept of my high value I Speak Life Academy Private Coaching™ program. When followers are bought into the culture and mission and vision of the organization, they are more likely to be productive which creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of the company being more profitable and successful in both the short and long-term.

compartmentalize their actions, behaviors and desired path forward with a strategic way of thinking to overcome a problem or achieve a certain level of success. While pathway is the concrete plan to take action on the necessary steps to bring that agency thinking to life. When you have agency thinking and the necessary pathway, hope becomes manifest and is birthed forward. So, you see when a leader creates a culture of hope by deputizing followers and mobilizing their followers own internal resources, they have become valued and actualized members of the organization who have a stake in the overall functioning and long-term success.

The Case for Hope as a Catalyst Page 78 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

In today’s society, with an unstable job market and an up and down economy there has never been a greater need for followers to hold on to hope regarding their work contexts. Furthermore, a work environment built upon hope provides a roadmap for a follower to realize internal desires to achieve goals and reach success and selfactualization. For example, while two followers may have similar natural abilities and talent, the more hopeful one is likely to be more successful, especially in moments of stress in a workplace context.

Review Article the impact of a leaders actions is explored even further. Make no mistake, followers will either rise to the occasion to be successful or remain low, dependent upon how they are perceived and treated by the leader. In my free Pillars of Success Course, key behavioral characteristics are revealed that point to what both leaders and followers can do to best position themselves to rise rather than remain low.

In other words, a followers hopeful thoughts reflect the belief that one can find pathways to desired goals and become motivated to use those pathways, which impacts the wellbeing and overall success of their particular situation. Therefore through a leaders cultivation of hope, they not only assign a high value to their followers, but they create a lasting legacy of influence.

Hope is Contagious What is the impact of a leader that instills hope in their followers over the long-term? The impact is tremendous. When a leader creates a regular atmosphere of hope through their actions and communication style, they are intentionally creating a framework for followers to understand how they too should engage one another. Followers who then engage hope and then enact hope in their broader organizational cultural context create a positive movement for existing employees and other followers who may be on boarded to the organization as well. How? In this Harvard Business Page 79 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

At the end of the day and in my estimation, the true measure of a leader’s impact is found in the health and productivity of his or her followers. Are they fulfilled, healthy and productive? If so, then the leader is on to something special and it should be cultivated, celebrated and modeled for others to see. After all, if you have something of value, shouldn’t it be shared with others? We know that Jiro Ono dreams of sushi, but he might now have to also add Michelin stars to the stuff of his imagination. The 94year-old sushi chef's acclaimed Sukiyabashi Jiro—which viewers around the world were introduced to in the heartwarming 2011 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi—has been stripped of its three Michelin stars in the company's latest guide, per The Guardian.

Michelin’s policy is to introduce restaurants where everybody can go to eat." Despite Michelin's distinction in wording, the point remains the same: Sukiyabashi Jiro used to have three Michelin stars, the highest a restaurant can earn, and now it will not. Chances are, the loss of stars isn't going to lessen Jiro's prestige, anyway; the

That doesn't mean that the high-end sushi restaurant's quality has gone down, however, as tends to be implied by the loss of stars. Rather, the celebrity-frequented Sukiyabashi Jiro has simply gotten too exclusive. "We recognize Sukiyabashi Jiro does not accept reservations from the general public, which makes it out of our scope," a representative for Michelin told the Guardian in a statement. "It was not true to say the restaurant lost stars but it is not subject to coverage in our guide.

If the cost of the omakase dining experience (40,000 yen, or about $366, not including tax, the flight to Japan, and lodging in Tokyo) doesn't stop you, the difficulty of getting a reservation certainly will. The topic has been the subject of many a travel guide, which recommend tricks like going through the concierge of a hotel on good terms with the restaurant or having a Japanese speaker make the phone reservation on your behalf. Regardless, with only 10 seats, the restaurant's website states that it's not even currently taking phone reservations. "We at

Sukiyabashi Jiro wish it were possible to accommodate all guests at our restaurant, but this is unfortunately not possible given the reality of our situation," it says. Whether the restaurant has Michelin stars or not, Jiro will continue being a master of sushi, his food will continue to be delicious, and the reservations will continue to be impossible to acquire. Good for Jiro.

• You want to observe someone else’s personal space. Don’t stand too close to someone. Be about an arms length away. • Respect the personal bubble.

There is an old adage that you cannot take back your first impression. Fair or not, this is true. So make it a great impression. When meeting someone new for the first time, whether it may be a friend, colleague, etc., keep this in mind. A smile always goes a long way. Being on time is also critical and a sign of respect. Allow enough time for parking, traffic or connections because a barrage of excuses doesn’t impress anybody. Your body language is very important. • Don’t fold your arms or cross your legs. Just stand up nice and straight. -Maintain great posture is really important. • A proper handshake is good to learn at a young age (no knuckle crunchers, wet noodles, or endless handshakes please). • If you go by a nickname say it up front (e.g. Lizzy short for Elizabeth or Ally for Allison). Page 90 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

Keep in mind that this is how we do things in the United States. I always tell my clients that other cultures have their own practices and we should respect and learn from them. There is a wonderful book called Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: How to do Business in Sixty Countries by Terri Morrison and Wayne Conaway. They address what is appropriate greeting etiquette country by country. For instance, if you are meeting someone European, he/she may give you the twocheek kiss if you are a female as is customary in their culture. You should also carefully monitor the tone of your voice (this is important on the phone as well). You don’t want to shout. If people tell you that your voice is too loud, please listen to them. If they ask you to speak up, please do. You also don’t want to sound like a know-it-all. WHEN FIRST MEETING NEW POTENTIAL CLIENTS OR COLLEAGUES: • Best to address them as Mr. or Mrs., or even Dr. if applicable, until it becomes clear they have given you permission to use their first name. • If multiple people are involved and you are making introductions, it is far better to Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

err on the formal side until someone corrects you. For example, you might say “Hello Mr. Jackson,” and he may correct you by saying, “Call me Dave.” • Spit out gum prior to any business meeting. Need I say more? • When out at a business meeting that involves alcohol it is better to abstain from drinking or if there is a lot of pressure have one drink maximum. Business deals can easily head south when alcohol gets involved. Behavior can change very quickly (and usually not for the better)! THE ART OF CONVERSATION People are intrinsically fascinated by other cultures. I believe that it is appropriate to start a meeting by sharing a little bit about yourself or your culture. But take caution when doing so, it is important not to start off the conversation with anything too personal. Being a good listener is important too. • It is acceptable, often times advised, to take notes, but is polite to ask for permission first (especially if the notes are going into your cell phone). • Asking open-ended questions and taking notes demonstrates that you are interested in what the other person has to say.

this article, the World Cup is taking place, and it seems that everyone I encounter can relate to the soccer games taking place in one way or another. Once the business talk begins, an easy lead-in to the conversation is to perhaps ask whomever you are speaking to about their personal experiences with the company. NAVIGATING A BUSINESS MEAL WHICH MIGHT INCLUDE AN INTERVIEW If possible, let the client order first. Follow their lead. Please do not get a 5-course meal if they are just ordering a salad. For example, if the client orders a cob salad, do not order the T-bone steak with 5 sides. • Be careful if you choose to order spaghetti with marinara sauce (my favorite) or another food with a sauce. • Avoid pizza, ribs, or other finger foods for lunch since these foods DO get messy and it is hard to look professional when eating with your hands. • Avoid foods that stain, are difficult to eat, or can get stuck in your teeth easily (broccoli, spinach or pineapple are the usual culprits for me • If you are tired, please do order coffee or iced tea with your meal as a way to perk

• In a group setting, try to ask various questions to different people and “work” the table. (This is important because it shows that you care about what others near you have to say, even those who may not usually prefer to voice their opinions). Tip: always have some conversation starters or ice breakers in your back pocket for awkward silences. It can be about anything, sports, movies, etc., while you are trying to get to know someone. Small talk is better than no talk at all. At the time I am writing Page 91 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

up, unless you have done so prior to the meeting. • Preview a menu on a restaurant’s website prior to dining there. )This is beneficial if you are an indecisive person, picky eater or have a lot of dietary restrictions that may prevent you from ordering food in a timely manner or the person you are meeting has these issues).

• Make sure once the meeting begins that you have put your cell phone and any other electronic devices away. • When sitting down, the first thing to do after you have introduced yourself is to put your napkin on your lap. • The number one reason that a business lunch can turn sour is if the waiter or waitress is spoken to rudely.

• After you schedule a meeting to write it down or put in your electronic calendar immediately.

• Do not ask the person interviewing you how much money he or she earns.

• Confirm the meeting the day before.

• Do not arrive starving to a business meal

• On the day of the meeting, allow plenty of time in case of traffic or parking issues.

• Don’t not hassle over the check. If you asked a client out to lunch, you always pay.

• It is ALWAYS better to arrive early rather than late. Being late can cost you the job or even the business you were seeking. There are absolutely no excuses that a potential employer wants to hear.

• When selecting a restaurant, pick somewhere you have been before and can recommend. • Pick a place that is not too noisy and will have an atmosphere conducive to the progress you hope to make in your meeting. ELECTRONICS AND SOCIAL MEDIA When is it acceptable to check your cell phone at the table? I get asked that question almost as often as my children asking me for rides or a raise in their allowance, which happens quite often. Always put the phone on vibrate or silent before the meal and give your client undivided attention. Keep your cell phone completely off the table. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you are expecting a call from a

Page 92 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

doctor. If this is the case, it is important to make your client aware beforehand that this call may come through. Cell phones are generally just detrimental to meetings. That is why some businesses are now collecting all cell phones before everyone sits down. Do not post information about your interview on Facebook or any other form of social media. Your potential employer can track this down and it definitely will not be for your benefit. DRESSING APPROPRIATELY The number one reason a business lunch can go wrong is dressing too casually. Making a great first impression includes dressing appropriately for your meeting. Dress code does vary by career industry. For example, if you are meeting with a lawyer or someone in the financial industry, you probably want to wear a suit or a fancier dress and heels. However, if you are interviewing at Whole Foods, the dress code will be much more laid back. It is still never acceptable to show up to an interview in shorts, jeans or a tee shirt (or short skirts or short dresses for ladies). The Internet has great examples of what constitutes dress code from formal, to business casual, and so forth. Do your research beforehand and dress appropriately. Please make sure not to wear a hat at the dining table, ever. If you are unsure of what type of dress is acceptable in the field you are meeting, it is always best to be overdressed rather than underdressed.

what can happen. One time, I had an interview that I thought went horribly wrong in my opinion, and was still offered the job. This is a good time to hand out your business card and make plans for follow up if you have not already. Sending a handwritten thank you note is fabulous and proper after a meeting or interview. However, in some industries (e.g. law firms), hiring is done the same day as the interview. In this case, it is best to send a same-day thank you email as soon as possible after the meeting since hiring decisions may be made that day. Remember even if this is an informational interview and the employer doesn’t have a job right now, or you are just getting to know someone this can only make you stand out in a positive light!
