From the Editor’s Desk

Welcome to this edition of E The Magazine for Todays Female Executive. This month we are featuring a host of wonderful articles including Martha & Snoop Dog and an interview with Morris Chestnut on the series finale of Being Mary Jane. This month’s cover, we are featuring Sandra Yancey, Founder of eWomen’s Network. Sandra shares her philosophy, information about eWomen’s Network and Diana Sabatino, Managing Director, features 3 awesome members. E Magazine reaches the highest targeted audience of female executives in the country and our reach is still growing. Before we get started with this issue, here’s a concept to consider “Practice Being There” Visualize your next step and practice being there.

You must plan to become the next version of yourself. When it became evident, and a young Elizabeth Windsor realized she might one day become Queen Elizabeth or, her proper title, Elizabeth Regalia, she set about preparing herself. All attention was turned towards preparation of the future monarchy. It was important that SHE grasp the concept. It’s one thing for people to prepare you, it’s another thing to prepare yourself by visualizing and stepping into the next great version of you. Your destiny is something you have to expect, manage, and internalize. You have to become normal with spectacular and comfortable with extraordinary. “Calling those things that are not as though they were”. I hope you can receive the great purpose being generated with you life and step into the future only you can imagine and fulfill.” The universe opens for the person that presses towards the mark of their highest calling.” Get busy becoming the greatest version of you! I hope you enjoy this issue. -Althea Ledford

was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She is known for her work on Almost Famous (2000), Pulp Fiction (1994) and Vanilla Sky (2001) SOURCE HypeBeast By Default, we tend to credit directors as the sole geniuses behind our favorite films; George Lucus for the Star Wars saga, Wes Anderson for his quirky worlds of pastel, Quentin Tarantino for his meticulously stylized universes full of plot twists. However, behind every director is a carefully selected team fo artists. Designers and craftsmen who work to bring their vision o the screen. These are the people who often go unrecognized for making iconic films look the way they do.

Among some of the most overlooked are costume designers, whose role and expertise are crucial to how well a film may potentially perform. A good costume designer’s works is either so seamless and realistic you don’t notice it, allowing you to lose yourself in the films story or it’s eccentric and impossible to ignore, elevating already charismatic characters to larger-than-life levels. In the latter case, it’s not uncommon for these characters and their clothes to influence the world of fashion both on the runway and the street. To explore the dynamic of fashion and fashion in film, we spoke to Betsy Heimann, the costume designer of such quintessential films as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire.

Are You Speaking for Your Business or in the Business of Speaking?

Tracy Rupchuk, Speaker, Best Selling Author, Coach and Media Personality

I remember the first time I saw someone speaking from the stage and actually realized I could do that too. In fact, mine came out of a burning necessity level to change the course of an industry. I was absolutely new to internet marketing, and I was attending my first event called the World Internet Summit - where I saw for the first time people on a big stage, having fun, speaking for 90 minutes and making money. I watched as speaker after speaker came and went off that stage and in one boundI discovered quickly there are 3 Different less leap of energy I declared as I sat there “I Types of Speaking Categoriesam going to be on that stage in 1 year.” 1. Keynote - your purpose is to set the tone This came from 2 emerging impulses: for the event 1. I could not believe that at an event called 2. Public - you are educating on something, the World Internet Summit there was no making a point - often done at a chamber women on the planet capable of being meeting or luncheon. This is used to raise on that stage - and I was determined to your profile in a community and lead change that. generation. 2. They were having fun, making money, and 3. Platform - you are educating on a topic to getting treated like rock stars - and I wantsell them an opportunity to continue their ed me some of that! relationship with you at the end. Little did I know the enormity of the task I had just set in motion, and the learning curve that would come with it - but at the same time - the sheer joy speaking from the stage supplies.

Page 28 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

I have done all three types of speaking, my favorite is platform. I’m going to address 2 specifically because this is where you can make a career of it, or add it as a marketing tool for what you do.

Keynote:

Keynote speakers are there to set the tone for an event, motivate, transform and educate on a topic. Pros: • You are paid to speak - usually a flat fee plus hotel and travel • You can make a living being a keynote speaker if you are good • You are guaranteed to make money when you book a speaking gig • If you get in with a corporation, there is a chance for many consecutive workshops and trainings for contract work Cons: • The competition is enormous and speaker fees have plummeted over the years. • Many companies have had their budgets cut and the top speakers are cutting their fees to adapt • Fees are set and that is as much as you can make while you are there • Once you speak for an association or event, that is usually it for you. It is rare to have keynote speakers have a repeat appearance. They are about variety. • Paid speaking engagements require more customization to specific group, high energy, motivation, content and very little if no selling time.

a website and get a free gift from me or the notes from your presentation or even a free strategy session depending on the number in the audience. Explain the offer and guarantee that the offer will be short. Some agencies and associations may even allow 3 minutes to 5 minutes if it fits the theme of the event - for example you have a book that you will autograph at the end and offer it for sale at the end of your presentation. In your contract negotiations clients or meeting planners may be able to purchase your training materials in bulk as part of the paid program to avoid any selling, such as when you have a book available. This way all participants get product and you get paid up front. Negotiate this as part of your contract if you have a book that works well for the group.

If you are brand new to the industry, you may opt to provide a talk for free and use this as a lead generation for your business. If that is the case ask the meeting planner if it is alright to make an offer at the end of your talk - such as go to Page 29 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The biggest issue right now is the speaking industry was hit hard over the last few years and many speakers couldn’t survive so needed to turn to alternative forms of speaking. This is where I have the most experience selling from the stage, often referred to as platform speaking.

Platform speaking:

This is when you educate and enlighten on a topic, and then sell additional services to continue the education with you.

So what do I recommend? The answer is both. If you can get a keynote take it. If you can speak somewhere for free with the offer to sell something additionally, take it. Especially when you are just beginning, take every speaking opportunity you can for practice and to raise your profile in the market.

So if I had to do it all over again as I sat in that audience saying I was going to change the face of an industry would I? Not Pros: • You can offer to speak for free which gives in a million years. Within 5 short months of casting that wish to the a wider pool of opportunities to speak universe, I won new internet • Your earnings are unlimited for each marketing success, was flown speaking gig - if you sell well - you can make 10x more than you could ever make all expenses paid from Califrom a keynote fee. I have made 6 figures fornia to Singapore to appear on my very first stage in front in 90 minutes. My max keynote fee was of 3400 people and I paved the $12,000 way for women to appear on • Massive lead source the worlds largest stages as I traveled to 35 countries and Cons: became one of the top female • You take on all the risk. If you don’t sell it speakers in the world for intercosts you time and money net marketing. • Platform selling is a dog eat dog world if you are speaking at a multi-speaker event because there is only so much money in the room, and you are all battling for a piece of it • You constantly have to hone and work your presentation and your audience needs to specifically match your message so you have to be selective

Still not sure whether speaking is for you?

I feel privileged to be a part of it and I love the adrenaline rush I get, the feeling of connecting with an audience and helping them to understand how their brand, websites and social media work together, and most of all if you want to travel the world and get paid to do it - then speaking is for you!

Here are some of the general benefits: 1. Raises your professional credibility and differentiates you from others 2. Great for lead generation 3. Martha & Snoop “Skipping to the Bank Besties on a Straight Brilliant Business Coup

People Magazine “We love seeing them together”

Click to Watch The brilliance in the unlikely match of Martha and Snoop isn’t just fun, it’s great business! E Magazine takes a look at the award winning success of Martha and Snoop as they team up for another season of Martha and Snoop Pot Luck.

cooking show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, and they have, in many ways, learned to step into each other’s worlds. But that doesn’t mean the lifestyle and homemaking guru will be spotted smoking any of her co-host’s favorite herb anytime soon.

Unlikely surprises can be the stuff that catapults ordinary situations into extraordinary experiences. First let’s take a look at two media reviews about Martha and Snoop, then towards the end of this article, we will look at more unlikely matches that had an explosive reaction.

”I made a pact early on doing this show that I would never enter Snoop’s domain, his trailer,” Stewart tells THR. “I’ve never gone as far as the first steps into his trailer. All the guests go into his trailer, by the way. But not Martha.” Even so, the 76-year-old admits, “I get kind of high from secondary smoke. I’m not a smoker myself, but the smoke is quite thick around the set.”

Now wrapped on the second season of their VH1 cooking show ‘Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party,’ Stewart reveals what’s next for this unlikely duo. Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have just wrapped the second season of their VH1 Page 36 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

She may not be rolling spliffs, but Stewart insists she’s “never been a prude” about the habits of her 46-year-old co-star. “So someone smokes marijuana? Big deal! People smoke cigarettes and die from cancer. I haven’t heard of anybody dying from cannaTOC

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg may not be a couple, but we sure do love seeing them together. The unlikely pair recreated that iconic scene from Titanic in a promo video for the return of their VH1 cooking show—now turned into a special called Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Party Challenge—and their chemistry is undeniable … and hilarious. With the lifestyle guru filling in for Leonardo DiCaprioas Jack and the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper taking Kate Winslet’s place as Rose, the video begins as “My Heart Will Go On” fills a beautiful kitchen. Instead of flying like Rose, Snoop drops his frying baskets into two tubs of hot oil, exclaiming, “I’m frying! Martha, I’m frying!” as the music crescendos. They both sway in the wind a little more before turning to the camera for

matching smirks. It’s BFF goals, 100 percent.

What makes the “Martha and SnoopPot Luck” a business strategy: 1) Authentic Chemistry It’s awesome when both parties genuinely like each other. The chemistry translates over the camera. 2) Blending 2 or more matches of mature target markets. When both parties have a following, a big merge can have an explosive effect. 3) Element of surprise. When no one saw it coming and they love the outcome, it can start a trend. 4) Both parties bring out the extraordinary aspects of the other. Just like you add a dash of salt to bring out the sugar or a dab of honey to enhanse a sharp cheese, Opposite and sharp contrasts bring out the best in each other.

3 Keys to Achieving Sustainable Revenue Growth

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

• You are overwhelmed with the online world of “experts”. • You have invested money and time in marketing campaigns. • You are struggling with a flat pipeline of potential leads. • You have struggled with setting yourself apart in a saturated market.

Are you...Frustrated - Confused – Out of Ideas? My name is Lori Johnston. I am the founder of Allied Exchange. I work with businesses to build strategies to achieve revenue growth. Bridging the gaps between sales, marketing and operations. I am a Professional Member of IAW, WITI, PMI, NAWSP, HIMSS With over 20 years of experience as a collaborative change leader, enabling the growth of successful teams and organizations, I am an efficiency champion for businesses facing challenges in an ever-expanding digital world. Some of the organizations I have worked with include: Sony Corporation, Stanford University Medical Center, Shell Oil, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the list goes on. In my career as a sales professional with the focus to business process improvement, I have had the pleasure to work with a variety of companies. Last year I conducted market research for my own business and the same concerns kept coming up. What all the conPage 42 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

TOC

cerns had in common was how to achieve sustainable revenue growth. Sustainable being the key word here. With this research, I set out to investigate further and study what are some of the components to achieving sustainable revenue growth. Taking what I already understood in business and what I found further, I have put together the following three challenges that companies face. In doing so, I believe the solutions to these challenges are attainable for any business.

How to Prevent Misalignment to Revenue Growth

What you think the problem is is that there are not enough new and recurring sales. So, what do most companies do? They put their focus on increasing revenues. Makes sense, right? Wrong. That is an issue because the stagnant or declining revenues isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom. The problem is somewhere else and more likely probably more than one issue. One main question to ask yourself - Is everyone in the company on the same page and heading in the same direction? What the true problem is that the team is not properly aligned. It’s very likely that even if sales do increase for a period of time, you will still end up with employees who are confused, making the sales increase unsustainable. Here is what is really going on. Your employees don’t understand your business and they certainly don’t understand your risks. A company with the team properly aligned will find that their employees care about the direction of the company, knowing it requires Page 43 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

TOC

Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

a sustainable effort on their part. If the team understand the business goals and risks, they will feel connected to the results. By connecting with individuals, you are helping them to feel like they make a difference.

Steps you can take for Innovative Change What you think the problem is is that most organizations have barriers to creativity, ideas, and innovation. Some are obvious while some are not. Barriers emerge from attitudes and perceptions of the organizational leadership, while others come from the overall structure or even from the employees themselves. What the true problem is the resistance to new ideas and processes. This happens because it’s human nature to become uncomfortable when it comes to potential change. Here is what is really going on. Old habits, beliefs, and assumptions cloud the openness to new ideas and will overpower any creative or innovative initiatives. Therefore, once again, the status quo remains and nothing changes. Page 44 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

I am one who believes in the benefit of sharing stories about innovation in the workplace setting. By doing so, you can put creativity into context and eliminate any preconceived ideas about any barriers. It is important to communicate the benefits of adopting new ideas, for both the company as well as for the employees. This will help gain acceptance throughout the organization and for everyone to become adaptable to change.

Gain New Incoming Clients

What you think the problem is that you work hard, you’re doing all the right things, but your client list is not growing, and new customers are not coming in a manner that meets your expectations. You think that your sales and marketing teams must not be doing their jobs effectively. What the true problem is that it’s no secret that buyers have changed. Salespeople used to have all the information. But in our digital age, buyers can do their own research, diagnose their own problems, and to a certain extent, design their own solutions to problems. TOC

Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Here is what is really going on. It’s a new age of selling! Less prescriptive and product-focused than in the past. The rise of the inbound selling process requires new strategies for salespeople and companies to adapt to their changing reality. By definition, inbound sales are the process of focusing on individual buyers and their personal needs, points of pain, frustrations, and goals. A company needs to recognize this and change the way their salespeople sell to match how people buy. When Attempting on Your Own…Sometimes you need expert help Many businesses struggle to stay ahead of the competition, the day-to-day operations of the company are more than enough to keep a management team busy. The only focus is to continually attempt to maintain the status quo. That is not enough. Sometimes employees and managers are just too close to a problem inside an organization to see it or identify the root causes. No one likes to change, but sometimes change is needed. Businesses should be concerned with the company culture, employee morale, and any other issues that get in the way when an organization is trying to implement change. In order to achieve sustainable revenue growth, you must have the following in your arsenal: • Clarity on Goals, Risks, and Strategy! • Sales Engagement Tools, Processes, and Coaching! • Create an Outreach Program and Be Relevant! Page 45 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

There is a fantastic quote by Benjamin Franklin that I remind myself of every day. It is “By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”. Words anyone can embrace and do something about, both personally and professionally.   Lori Johnston, founder of Allied Exchange, is a Management Consultant specializing in Sales Performance and Process Transformation. Take our three eWomenNetwork Orange County members spotlighted in this month’s edition... After being told by a school counsellor that her son’s dream - to become a brain surgeon was a ‘waste of time and money’ Shellee Howard put on her ‘mom face’, toured colleges, studied the admissions process for 20-30 hours a week on top of her day job, went back to college herself and secured seven full rides for her son before he finished high school.

Message from Diana Sabatino, Managing Director “Success is not for the chosen few, it’s for those who choose it. ~ Unknown

Success leaves clues.

She then wrote How To Send Your Kids To College Without Losing Your Mind Or Your Money to help other parents realise and fulfill their kids’ dreams; so they didn’t need to go back to school! Then there’s Dr. Carol Soloway, who is on a mission to raise enough funds from her national book tour of Gracie’s Gone to recover two, full classrooms of missing children.

Whether it’s a mom returning to high school to become a college counsellor after the system failed her son (read article here); or a celebrity chiropractor turned author bravely trekking 6500 miles in an RV to raise funds for the nation’s missing kids (read about Dr. Carol Here)… Success leaves clues. It leaves clues in our relationships, in our jobs, in our careers and in how we take care of ourselves and our families. It leaves clues in the actions we choose every day. Failure also leaves signs - which we can fix at any moment. Because it’s not enough to want to be successful, we have to choose to be successful and we do that by the actions that we take and the choices that we make each and every day. Dr. Soloway, who is also still maintaining her day job as a Qualified Medical Examiner while speaking and touring nationally, is donating 25% of the proceeds from the sale of Gracie’s Gone to Child Rescue, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates trafficked children. And then there’s Vaughn Fahie, who since age 16, has recorded and produced over 10,000 hour-long sermons, even creating iTunes type platforms for his church’s ‘Download Club’. Not to mention turning a car accident six years ago that stopped brain activity in part of his left lobe and his prefrontal cortex, into a way to help the elderly, the sick and the terminally ill. Success leaves clues. In high school. Across the country. In the recording studio. To be truly successful is about making a decision.

It’s about deciding what we truly want and then making a commitment to achieve that desire, to carve a timeline and outline of how we’re then going to track and measure our progress. Success is just a series of best practices, done every day. There are no limitations to what we can do. No matter what happens, because we are willing to do whatever it takes; whether it’s making our kids’ dreams come true, publishing a book, creating our signature talk, holding our first event, or simply just putting ourselves ‘out there’. It’s not about just making the effort. It’s about choosing, making the commitment and taking massive actions to set yourself up for success. Ask yourself each day, are the things I’m doing leading me closer to my goal? And don’t think you can do it alone. Find your community. We all need to surround ourselves with doers and believers, individuals that will empower us, support our ideas and shine a light upon our dreams. I’m so honored and privileged to introduce you to some of those amazing like minded women and men in this edition, and encourage you to contact your nearest eWomen Network Chapter.

High School Counselor Sends Mom Back to School When 13-year-old Ryan Ouillette’s high school college counselor dismissed - as a ‘waste of time and money’ - his dream to attend an Ivy League College and become a brain surgeon, his mom did what all moms do... Mother-of-two Shellee Howard put on her ‘mom face’, toured colleges, studied the admissions process for 20-30 hours a week on top of her day job, went back to college herself and secured seven full rides for her son before he finished high school. “I did it because I was a single mom who couldn’t afford college and I had no idea how I was going to get my son into medical school, let alone pre-med,” said Ms. Howard, Page 52

Ms. Howard, the founder of College Ready, based in Corona del Mar, who over the past two years alone has secured over $1 million in scholarship offers for B-average to Ivy League students, said sadly her experience with her son’s high school counselor was not uncommon - with just 1 counselor to 500 students on average, across the nation. And parents were not helping either. “They often leave the entire transaction to teenagers even though a college degree costs as much as a first home,” Ms. Howard said. “College debts range from $30,000 to $350,000 and yet parents allow their 17-yearolds to effectively ‘buy their first home’ without even seeing it. “And they’re going into massive debt because of it.” Ms. Howard said with 2300 accredited, nonprofit, four-year colleges and universities in the United States alone - and no uniform admission protocols - other common mistakes included: TOC

• Leaving college planning until the senior year when it was too late to fix academic mistakes or meet the 200 hours of community service hours necessary. • Wrongly assuming it was better for a student to get all A’s in non-challenging classes that were not academically weighted, in lieu of a ‘rigorous’ curriculum. • Allowing children to pick subjects based on what their friends were studying or what their friends claimed colleges wanted. Parents also allowed students to apply for schools outside their budget and that did not offer aid - setting them up for disappointment even if they were accepted into the college academically.

His ability to play any song from ear alone, on piano, clarinet, or saxophone translates into an unrivalled talent to ‘cut silent gaps’ turning multiple recordings into one perfect podcast take. “The gift of being able to play by ear means my hearing and my listening is very attuned to the cadence, flow and pace of who I’m recording,” Vaughn said. Vaughn Fahie

As a 16-year-old he used a cassette deck to record and edit his pastor’s sermons. From cassette to CDs and MP3s, he’s since produced over 10,000 hour-long sermons, even creating iTunes type platforms for his church’s ‘Download Club’. But there’s more to Vaughn Fahie than sound bytes, there’s the car accident six years ago that stopped brain activity in part of his left lobe and his prefrontal cortex, which led to the meditative jazz ‘Peace of Mind’ CD and concerts he gives to the elderly as well as the terminally ill.

“Whether it’s a podcast, their audiobook or a sermon, it means I can guide and coach them to make their speech more musical, more flowing and more engaging to listen to.” He said the key was to put intention into every word, as he does himself with his music. “Music enters into the soul without your mind’s permission and it is a carrier of any

Suffering severe concussion just six years ago, unable to drive and struggling to speak - but with six major concerts already booked - he discovered his brain knew music on autopilot. “Even though I couldn’t finish sentences or drive, my musical performances were never affected,” Vaughn said.

From his realisation came another gift - the creation of his Peace of Mind CD - which he has given to those battling cancer, as well as sick children and elderly patients. “I learnt that as musicians, 95% of our brain is activated while we are playing and that’s why I made my CD, to help others,” he said. “Because music activates hand, motor skills, rhythm, listening and coordination.

ing the Best Credit Card Catlin Chen

When it comes to searching for a suitable credit card, most of us apply for one either from the financial institution we bank with, from an advertisement we saw on television, or through a promotion with 0% financing for purchases and/or balance transfers for a certain period. Given the vast number of credit cards that are available on the market today, it is nearly impossible to research each one of them to find out which ones are most suitable based on what you purchase the most and your spending patterns. Don’t worry, there is a 2019 analysis which I’ll share with you below for hundreds of credit cards in the U.S. News card database. But first, I’ll answer some questions I often get regarding credit card best practices.

Does having multiple credit cards affect your credit

Depending upon how much you spend, having multiple cards can improve your credit since it increases the amount of credit limit that is available to you. To maximize your credit score, you should always keep your debts under 30% of your total credit limit across all your credit cards. Personally, I think having four major credit cards is enough for monthly usage as well as for emergencies. I suggest using two credit cards regularly to maximize rewards as both may give higher rewards for different categories.

How to Use a Credit Card

This may sound cliché, but it always amazes Page 72

me as to how many people, including myself of course, tend to purchase things that are not necessary and cannot afford, on a credit card. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to use a credit card like cash or a debit card. If you cannot pay of the entire balance by the due date, then it’s probably time to start using cash as a strategy for self-control. TOC

of the pending stage, and then pay the credit card balance by either transferring the money from your checking account, if you bank with the same bank, or just pay the balance through online banking. You will still earn your rewards.

Can the Interest Rate be Increased by the Credit Card Issuer

Interest rates for credit cards are usually variable. The interest rate is tied to a benchmark which is known as the index rate, or prime rate. This is then added to the spread assigned by the bank to get the variable rate. The rate will vary depending on whether the Federal Reserve raises or lowers the prime rate.

In order to reap the benefits of rewards, you do not have to wait until the end of the billing cycle to pay the entire credit card balance. Some of you out there don’t like to wait until the entire balance accumulates on next months bill before paying it. What you can do for example, is after you make the purchase on the card, wait a few days for it to get out Page 73

E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Other factors that may increase your credit cards rates are: • Your credit score has experienced a significant drop which means your credit card issuer can increase your rate on the condition they notify you 45 days in advance. • You are 60 Days Late on Payments – This will not only have a significant negative impact on your credit score, but also your rate may increase dramatically. • If you received your credit card with a promotional rate, then your rate will increase after the promotion.

Cash Advance Fee

One major area that I see consumers overlook when accepting an offer for 0% balance transfers is that either they don’t know or forget there is always a balance transfer fee of TOC

Quality wine production is starting to become more of a norm, and the historical image of Puglia as a provider of grapes and grape juice to northern Italian wineries is becoming more a thing of the past. It is indeed in Puglia, in between Brindisi and Mesagne, that we find Fabio Zullo of Masseria Masciullo. Now, you might wonder: who is Fabio Zullo? Well, I did not really know Some subtext that describes this image anything about Fabio Zullo either until last autumn when I attended a luncheon with some This young agronomist, who for the last few other food, wine, and travel journalists at the years has been working for, and still does, restaurant Cibus in Ceglie Messapica. Even if this quote might sound a bit corny, I remembered I had read it somewhere when I started writing this article. I believe it can fit in here as behind simple pleasures or things often lays hard work and complex thought processes. And, I think it fits the wines of Masseria Masciullo. Let us find out why… Fabio Zullo comes from a family that has been farmers and vine growers since generations back. Today, they have about 100 hectares (240 acres) of land in a total of which 45 hectares (110 acres) are vineyard lots. On the rest of the land, they cultivate other things such as olives, fruit, and cereals. They have cultivated grapes for many years but mainly to sell the grapes to other buyers or make wine to sell as bulk wine.

Fabio Zullo– An Independent Winemaker in Puglia “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” – quote by Steve Jobs Page 91

In 1998, Fabio’s parents acquired Masseria Masciullo close to Mesagne where Fabio makes wine today with his sister Maria Rita and brother Alessandro. It is an old typical Pugliese farm from the 17th century where they have set up their winery in the old stable building. They only started bottling wine as recently as 2015. It is, therefore, only in the last couple of years that their winery has taken off. The family does all the work themselves without any staff or external oenologist. TOC

the decisions on their own. He says that his time working for the cooperative Libera Terra, where he met many people in the wine sector, proved to be a great learning curve.

Fabio’s vision

I asked Fabio if he could talk a bit about his vision, i.e. what type of wines he wants to produce. His answer was that his main idea is to make fresh, yet complex, and enjoyable wines. He wants to be able to make wines that are a pleasure to drink and that are not too heavy or overcharged with oak. In fact, when he is not convinced about a vintage, they do not bottle it but rather sell it as bulk wine.

The winery is organic and, according to the online newspaper Brindisireport.it, it was the first organic winery in the Brindisi area. Fabio told me that they had been making samples tests for several years before 2015 to identify those vineyard lots that are best suited for high quality wine production. In the wine cellar, they have mainly small vats of 2500 and 4500 liters to continuously do test fermentations and maturations. As I mentioned above, they have no oenologist but rather Fabio and his family make all Page 92 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

I think these traits are what spoke to me when I tasted his wines, i.e. the freshness, the clean notes where you feel the essence of the grape variety, the drinkability.

The grapes‌

What grape varieties are they focusing on then? Well, so far mainly Negroamaro, Susumaniello, and Chardonnay. They only do monovarietal wines but not because they are averse to blends, Fabio says. Fabio continues to stress that he needs to be convinced of the quality for him to bottle a wine. So far, he says that he has seen the best results by making Negroamaro and Susuamniello as monovarietal wines. TOC

A future step will probably be a blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. He already had the possibility some years ago to make such a wine, but he was not convinced about the quality and thus decided against it.

Negroamaro

This is a grape believed to have Greek origins as so many other southern Italian grape varieties due to Greek settlers in that area some centuries BC. Some research has, however, stated that Negroamaro is unrelated to any Greek grape varieties. The first written document referring to Negro Amaro, or Negroamaro, was as late as in 1872. (See Ian D’Agata, Native Wine Grapes of Italy, p. 365) Negroamaro is a grape that is most common in the Lecce, Brindisi, and Taranto area but it can also be found in Basilicata and Campania. Negroamaro is, for the most part, blended with other grape varieties such as Malvasia Nera or international grapes. It has been said that monovarietal Negroamaro wines can be boring and hard to drink. The grape’s high acidity and tannins are often considered best tamed by blending it with another grape. I think Fabio Zullo shows that Negroamaro can do splendidly well on its own! The fruity and spicy notes are very clean in both his Negroamaro rosé wine and Negroamaro red wines. The hints of graphite or shoe polish as some defines it are in no way overbearing. Indeed, you feel the freshness very well combined with complexity and a nice body without becoming heavy as a wine. Just as Fabio says himself, they are didactic Negroamaro wines where the colour is not too dark and the tannins not too intrusive. (See further my article about Negro Amaro rosé wines: Negro Amaro Rosé Wines Page 93 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

at their Best in Salento, Puglia)

Fabio had also brought a bottle of a Negroamaro 2015 (without label yet) that had been matured in tonneaux. He explained how they had matured the juice in four different tonneaux barrels and that they then tasted samples from each of the four barrels to see which one they liked best. Again, this is in line with their idea to only bottle the wine where they find very convincing quality.

This was a very good example of a Negroamaro in my opinion. It was still fresh and full-bodied without being heavy and without too much oak influence, and you felt the typical characters of the grape variety.

Susumaniello

The wine I was really fascinated by was Fabio’s Susumaniello IGT Salento 2016. This is a grape I have been wanting to learn more about and, especially, taste more of for some time. I have not tasted that many yet. I have often felt that I might not understand the grape because I was not often convinced of the Susumaniello wines I previously tried. Fabio explained that it is indeed a grape that is difficult to handle, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Its acidity can drop very quickly while it is maturing on the plant. On the other hand, he says that it can be very challenging to handle its tannins in the cellar.

bottle. Fabio Zullo’s Susumaniello IGT Salento 2016 that has been matured in steel is a fresh, fruity, smooth, and elegant wine where the tannins are in no way disturbing. Anyway, you get the picture, right? That l really liked Fabio’s Susumaniello Would you like to visit Fabio Zullo and Masseria Masciullo, you can contact them via their Facebook page.

For a long time, Susumaniello was considered to be of Dalmatian origin but more recently, it has been shown that it seems to be a cross between Garganega and Uva Sogra. (See D’Agata, p. 443) It is a grape where the productivity apparently drops very much after the first 10 years of the vine’s life. Susumaniello is, for the most part, used as a blend with Negroamaro and/or Malvasia Nera. It has been rediscovered or reinvented more recently and I believe it is a grape that we will see more of in the near future. The wine writer and book author Ian D’Agatha writes that it is considered a wine that needs at least 6-8 years in the bottle to settle and smoothen out the aggressive tannins. I believe that Fabio Zullo proves this is not always the case if you manage to handle its winemaking in the right manner. Of course, it will surely become even better with more years in the Page 94

seatic Era, while today it is the place where the police inspector Wallander solves crimes. It is an idyllic small town by the seaside. My journey thus started in Sweden, bringing me to Florence a bit more than 15 years ago to do a Ph.D in history at the research institute of the European Union. After re-ceiving my Ph.D. and teaching Modern History at the university for a couple of years, I decided to stay in Florence, changing my career path by using my sec-ond degree in languages and becoming a freelance translator. My interest in wine has been run-ning as a connective thought all through these years, leading me to become a som-melier.

My Wine Story

My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fas-cinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elabo-rating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some Page 95

fellow som-meliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to de-velop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-dominated audience together with a couple of translator colleagues, changing the course name to Words at the Winery. The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal mini-courses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fel-low sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firen-ze. At the moment, I am working on putting to-gether a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector.

Why Should I Live A Purpos Someone Is Waiting For Yo

Part of a new series by Dr. Anissa McNeail “I tell the stories of Foster Youth & Orphans” w

se Driven Life? ou!

www.edworks4u.org

I have known for some time that my purpose in life is to help children who do not have a mother or father to raise them. To help educate orphans and foster youth so that they will have a sustainable livelihood. I got it! And oh, what a relief and how joyous it is to know this. Knowing your purpose is just the beginning. Courage and knowledge are the necessary companions to knowing your purpose. You must have the courage to completely follow your purpose wherever it leads you and

when you arrive you must be an expert/ knowledgeable to provide exactly what you are intended to do. God has given you a purpose, will guide your steps, and has someone waiting when you arrive. I know this to be true! A colleague had a family vacation in Kenya and met a woman she thought did amazing work and referred the woman to me. I had never gone to Kenya and was not necessarily looking for a new project ( I build schools and education services internationally). I spoke with Jackie Ouko, Executive Director of Wagusu Complex Academy a few times and I knew I had to go to a remote village outside of Nairobi Kenya (in the bush) and when I arrived the Wagusu Village in Kenya a community was waiting. I arrived to a warm welcome of a community excited to have a school and to learn more I was astounded by the gold mines, hard work of the men and women of the village, the sacrifice made for their child to have an education, and their need and desire to learn more. The Wagusu Village is filled with gold. Most of the men and women in the remote village work at the mine. I did not want to just visit the mine but to actually work so that I had greater knowledge of what a day was like for the parents at a school which I will help build. Just my presence at the mine was astonishing to the everyone and they indicated that they were shocked to see me working. I had only heard of the riches of metals on the continent in Africa. Never in my wildest dreams would have I have imaged working to extract gold. When you show up for your purposed assignment you and the designed person or person will be amazed at the wonder of God.

This day was meant to be. It was purposed for me to arrive in this community, mine, and village at this time. They were waiting for someone to come, understand their plight, and be an expert to build a school. Immediately, I felt this connection. Not only was the community waiting but my assigned children were waiting. I had the opportunity to visit orphanages, provide information to improve their lives, and to teach the staff members how to provide better care for them. This is at the very moment when Kenya has a national law that all orphan children must receive every effort to be reunited with family members. I was able to explain how knowing your family is best, share my experience of growing up with my cousins, aunts, and uncles help form a connection which will far outlast the institutionalized life style of an orphanage. Now we are working together to rethinking how we care for and support these children. Page 101 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

When you showed up for my assigned purpose an orphan child was waiting for me. Waiting for me to be courageous and to fulfill my GOD given purpose. Needless to say that after two days in the Wagusu Village I was elated, my heat was filled, and I was overwhelmed at God’s planning. Never in my dreams or wildest thoughts would I have imaged that I would arrive in the village and work with most amazing people. Neither did I dream or expect that my willingness to live to purpose driven life will allow me to be a vessel for GOD purpose for someone else’s life and at the assigned moment in time we would meet and someone on the other side of the world was waiting for me to show up!! The next day, I walked through the bush and stopped for a herd of cattle to arrive at the school, which I know call my school. You see how quickly you can change from not knowTOC

ing to knowing! I arrived at a 4 room school with a preschool class in a tin room filled with students and an energized teaching staff. The school overlooks Lake Victoria and has ever promise to be a breathtaking center for knowledge. I worked with teachers, parents, and students. I will never forget a first grade student, Josephine, facial expression when I introduced myself as Dr. McNeil. Her eyes light up and she repeated doctor, doctor, doctor. Josephine was the first person to raise her hand in class, quickly solved math problems, and is a natural leader. She watched me intensely during my visit and by the final day working with teachers and students she said to me “I will be a doctor too!” On my final day, I met with parents and community members and like any small village word had spread that I was the tall doctor who worked at the mine. I shared my journey of being a homeless child, going into foster care, life of poverty, and using education to become a doctor. I also shared my purpose to help Jackie build a school, and everyone began to sing “ Yesu Okloo” in Swahili which means God is Undefeated. My heart swelled with love. I knew that I had arrived at the appointed time to fulfill God’s purpose. I now understand that each of us has an assignment, our steps are ordered, and if you are willing to live a purpose driven life God has a person, people, or a community waiting for you to do the work. I understand that my work and purpose is not about me. It’s about the person, people, and communities I serve. That don’t need my presence but they need my expertise and to bring the very best that I have to offer. All of me. This is love. Page 102 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Now, I know why love is the greatest gift of all. It requires all of you. When you give your all to a community they fill you up! I didn’t leave Kenya drained or tired. I left enthused and energized to continue my purpose. We must keep fulfilling our purpose……someone is waiting for us.

NG HER WITH SCENT YOUR KITCHEN

By Esmée St James

THE COGNAC SOAKED AROMA of Coq au Vin wafting from your sto-vetop are going to your head when all of a sudden, your culinary trance is interrupted by is a knock at the door. She’s here, it’s her first date at your place and you’ve brazenly offered to whip up something delicious for her to lure her over to your lair. So far so good, you’ve done your due diligence by asking her what she likes to eat, what she likes to drink, you’ve even tuned in to her musical preferences. Being the clever sleuth that you are, you’ve taken the time to listen attentively to her responses and have even made mental notes on any additional clues she’s dropped about what delights her. You’re sure you haven’t missed a thing. The aroma of your daring culinary efforts and attention to detail will definitely not go unnoticed, women are very sensually stimulated and… hold on there, pardner, put down the

toys! I’m simply talking about the moment your date crosses your threshold for the first time, she will have her guard up and whatever hits her olfactory glands first will tell her volumes. It’s natural instinct for a woman to be on the lookout for any-thing suspicious or potentially threatening. Much like a cat cautiously sniffing everything when she enters a new house, your date will be looking for reasons to bolt as she enters unfamiliar territory. It’s your job to help her feel safe, protected and secure. Your Coq au Vin will do much to alleviate her “doorstep doubts” but there’s more to consider. A woman’s olfactory glands are generally much more sensitive than a man’s. Like a fine French perfume “nose” or seasoned sommelier, her nose will detect the slightest nuances and can reveal volumes about you.

The portion of women’s brains that is devoted to scent detection is larger than that of men’s. One theory is that women require a greater sense of smell for select-ing a suitable mate. In other words, men can mate with many women and have children with each of them and have many offspring in a given time period. In contrast, women can only have one baby in a nine month time period so it makes sense for them to be more selec-tive about their mate. Male scent may confer key data like testos-terone levels (which can be desirable), and information about genetic compatibility or lack thereof via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. (1) While you may not be able to tell what your friends have been munch-ing on, I know a gal or two who can easily detect when you’ve lunched on filet mignon before seeing her. One of my own dates was quite be-wildered when I correctly guessed the label and year of chardonnay he’d been sipping earlier at a business lunch.

fire in passing. Puts you in another moment, doesn’t it? The object is to have your lady anchor your scent with a romantic, ‘scentsual’ experience. You know that old saying “I smell trouble”? Well, besides the aroma of a homemade meal you know she’ll love, here are three tips to avoid setting off one of her most powerful “trouble detectors” her nose: 1. Survey says that women prefer a recently showered man – clean is sexy. A bit of cologne is appealing, a light, fresh scent that will make her want to lean in closer for a sniff of your warm neck rather than back off for some fresh air. No doubt you’ve been bowled over at one point or another by a passerby’s perfume so obnox-iously foul that it could knock a buzzard off a garbage truck. Same thing but multiply that tenfold for her.

Our sense of smell has been proven to create the strongest sense memory, indel- 2. The same goes for your breath. foods, sodas strong cheeses and other pungent foods. Your breath should have her thinking, “hmm… I wonder if he’s a good kisser”, not “excuse me, I I think I forgot something on the stove!”. To a woman, bad breath is the death knell as far as smooching goes. 3. Drinking plenty of water, about eight glasses a day will help flush toxins that can cause halitosis. Choose water over juices and fla-vored drinks to help meet the quota and keep your breath fresh. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages don’t count, sorry, they’ll de-hydrate you, negating all that water you just chugged. Breath mints can temporarily mask things when in doubt, but don’t leave them in view. Women notice the details. They remember them. Take heart, the attention to detail you’ve demonstrated by creating a succulent, fragrant meal for her first date at your place will definitely not go unnoticed. She will appreciate all your hard work more than you know. Page 110 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

If you want her leaning in close behind to get a peek at your skil-let it’s equally important that you put the same effort into making sure you smell as delicious and tempting as your dinner. Who knows… your whipped cream, fresh berries and chocolate drizzle may end up some-where entirely different than the intended dessert plates :-) By using the tidbits offered in this and my other posts to your ad-vantage you’ll easily step into being the confident, irresistible gentleman you are. Turning Passion

The Relationship of Character and Transformation (Part Two)

Into Power

By Jodi Tucker

People with the ability to influence are seen as leaders. They have developed skills that have turned their dreams into the dreams of others. Martin Luther King didn’t speak of his desire to execute a strategic plan in his speech in front of the Reflecting Pool in Washington DC that warm August day in 1963. He shared his passion for moving people toward a common goal that united a nation in a way few had dared hope. Dr. King’s passion was unquenchable. Not just because he wanted to see his dream become a reality but because he intimately understood the need for leaders to understand the responsibility of their role was to bring healing and awareness into the process. Healing and knowledge that allow the leader to grow as they lead- and to embrace failure and change so they can understand the needs of those around them. This becomes leadership that turns an idea into a vision that changes the world. Page 114 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Passion is Contagious

If you have ever been around someone who is on fire about their vision, you can’t help but catch the spark yourself. They become, without a doubt, the heartbeat of any cause or change or idea that moves people into action. The people that change the world and get things done aren’t individuals who hold themselves apart from the experiences of others around them. They don’t “look down from on-high” hoping to get credit or applause. Real leaders give their passion away to the people around them- they make that power contagious. When I first started to get involved in human rights cases and advocacy I was ready to respond to the “Bat Signal.” I’d put on my boots and cape and swoop in for the rescue. I misunderstood that leadership wasn’t about rescuing. I thought that change could only TOC

happen if I forced it- if I fought hard enough and long enough AGAINST others. I armed myself to lead others into battle I found that I was very short sighted in how these conversations were going to impact the relationships I had with people long term; and how it would affect my relationship with myself. To rescue I had to shoulder the burden and keep all that passion inside of me because without it I didn’t have the energy to keep going- to be the hero others (and honestly myself included) expected me to be. It took a major burn-out for me to realize it’s just not good enough for leaders to view their role as rescuers or conquerors. I had forgotten to be contagious. I failed to give my power to others and to believe that I had enough- for me- for them- for the situation. I had cast myself in the one-dimensional role of superhero instead of understanding Page 115 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

that those sticky situations that I was in were an opportunity to share a dream and make change a shared experience. What if I asked the questions that would lead to deeper relationships and build bridges between me and others around the table? Its wasn’t until I watched Dr. King’s speech from the beginning to the end that understood how I needed to include healing and awareness in what I was trying to do. To make change, I had to give my power away.

Power Is Service

You see, power is about leading from behind-it’s not the cape and boots person who does this. Power that changes the world is much more humble. It sees itself as lifting others from underneath. Servanthood is sometimes thought of as a weakness. It isn’t – it’s the foundation for reaching dreams that seem impossible because serving others lets us do TOC

the remarkable- to heal and to be healed. When Dr. King spoke of his dream, he was talking about healing a nation torn in two. His vision was about healing within his community and uniting people far beyond any law or dictate had proposed to date. He listened to his followers and heard their stories. He shared their story- he told his. And in doing that he created a bond that didn’t just define the issue- it made it seem as if every man woman and child were finally being heard. Making others your priority requires a confidence and a surety that inspires people to action. In my past, I know I failed to see the opportunity to do this with the people I was engaging. I looked across the table at the lawyers or managers that were fighting not to support my

Page 116 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

clients, and I missed the point entirely. You see, when I saw them as an obstacle instead of partners it meant that I could not serve them. I could not reach them- I could only defeat them. I couldn’t find how their experience and mine might be the same and where my role might show them a different way of doing things not just that they had done it wrong up until now. Making change and gaining a victory are not always in line with one another. Once I realized that my real power in those rooms was the chance to make changes far bigger than winning a case -it shifted everything inside of me. I could see the hurt, the frustration, the defensiveness and the fear behind the actions of those around me. I could hear what they weren’t saying- and I

TOC

could respond to that. The outcomes became much more sustainable and meaningful because I was impacting the way they thought instead of fixing one situation at a time. That meant that the power I wielded made a difference beyond that room or conversation. It meant that even though they needed to change their actions- we did not have to be enemies to see that done.

es. Being that in tune with who you are can make the changes you want to see in your reality become possible.

The characteristics of listening and empathy are the first two pieces of the leadership puzzle in making change possible. When we continue to drill down on the aspects of leadership that make passion and power happen we find more things to think about and use to examine our leadership goals and style. What Power Is Humble I’ve been talking about here are two parts of Looking inside of why we do things the way we do them is frequently something we would leadership that you may not have thought of as passion and power…let me show you. rather avoid. If we look too hard we might see our failings and our belief in ourselves might take a hit- we might not be that great. The ability to reflect on who we are and what we believe is a significant part of distinguishing strong leadership. It’s what keep us from filling the room with ourselves versus filling the room with the potential for change. Strong leaders see change as a part of who they are and what is supposed to happen while they are influencing others. They know that in many ways the steps they take will affect their growth as much as it will roll out change for their team or organization. They know that their ability to listen and hear the stories of others has to build out who they are and what they believe. So they are careful and thoughtful about their approachPage 117 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

3. Healing

This might feel like a big jump here. How can healing be the goal of leadership? Isn’t that an individual responsibility? How can I be responsible in any way for you and your hurt? Yes, it is…you and I each have to seek to heal our failings and relationships. However, leadership that has the insight not just to take advantage of opportunities to heal but makes it a prioritycan change everything.

What if being their leader helps them become whole? When we make it known that this is who we are and what we value we draw people to us. What’s the impact? Our teams and our organizations flourish.

Once I saw that swooping in with my superhero mindset was shutting down my ability to reach into people’s lives beyond that moment of rescue I began to see that the more effort I made to focus on the quality of the relationship I had with them the more healing was possible. This doesn’t mean I required disclosure of their pain or even confirmation that there was any rift in the interacts they had with others in their organization or teams. I simply took my eyes off the goal of winning and put it instead onto the goal of impacting personal change for every person I encountered. Suddenly the idea that I was winning, and they were losing wasn’t appealing at all. Conflict morphed from stressful and adversarial to conversational and shared perspective. The rules didn’t go away, and the realities of some of the ugly that I was there to address were still there- but my personal approach was much more about the people than the outcome. In a corporate setting or as an entrepreneur, you might think healing isn’t going to cut it. It’s too competitive or demanding of a background to make this kind of people-focused idea possible. Especially for women. To show compassion might put you at odds with others who value results; but what if it doesn’t? What if your ability to make people whole and to focus on that affects your team and your business in a way that motivates your team and keeps them close to you? Page 118 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

4. Awareness

I used to avoid mirrors. I didn’t want to look at that lumpy belly or the way my pants fit. It is very hard to look at ourselves when we are bracing for the failures we think we have or are. But knowing who we are is necessary if we are going to step into places that put us in charge of other people. This doesn’t just apply to the board room or office- it applies to every place we are with people including our TOC

personal lives and families. Self- awareness is critical to being effective change agents in the world. I was recently given the role of mentoring a young woman who came into our organization

It was true that I had far more experience and ability than she did- my role was much bigger. It wasn’t so much that part of me that was most valuable as her mentor. I had to stop and think every step of the way about what kind of impact I could have on her career development and if I was capable of leading her into growing her skills. To do that I had to be brutally honest about the places I needed to develop myself. I didn’t just need to look in that mirror I was avoiding- I had to admit that I had some lumps and some not so great parts. Admission that wasn’t necessarily private. I shared my failing with the Chair of the organization since he was who I reported to. Perhaps he would want someone new. Perhaps I wasn’t the right person. The issue was- he just didn’t have a “perfect” supervisor to offer this intern. It was me, and that was it- warts and all.

as an intern. Her history and profile showed me that she had a lot of vulnerabilities, and it was communicated to me that it was my responsibility to support her growth. At first blush that might seem to you that clearly I had a lot to offer her, and it was my strengths, that identified me as her leader to others. Apparently they must have put me with her because of my more developed skill set. Here is where humbleness showed up for me. Page 119 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

As it turned out my ability to look in that mirror and acknowledge that I wasn’t all put together became my greatest asset. I didn’t just put my skills in the room I put my gaps in the room too. I saw her in me and me in her. It built up our relationship in such a way that I grew as much (if not more) than she did. In the end, being her mentor put me in a place of self-awareness beyond what I would have willingly agreed to otherwise. I was forced to be vulnerable and honest with who I was. To be frank- I craved that growth in other places and I deliberately shared with people openly where I felt I might need support and where I was concerned I would not be able to succeed. Both awareness and healing are the results of a passion to lead and the power to change lives. In our offices and our businesses, our leadership is critical to our success but more TOC

than that it is a vehicle through which we are felt in the world. It is an expression of our values and our desires to be better people.

Reflection Questions:

1. Where in your career or life have you defined success as “winning”? How has that served you? How has “winning” impacted the relationships with people around you? Where might healing have produced a better outcome? 2. Is your leadership position dependent on other’s perception of you as accomplished and more skilled? How would being honest about your failings and potential shortfalls be perceived by those around you? 3. What would others say about your ability to “make them whole”? Would this approach fit into your organization’s culture? How would this change your point of view about success and teamwork?

“Speaking

Truth to Power” Powerfully

In today’s political climate, it is important to have a better understanding of what “speak truth to power” really means, so it is not left to a select few in the media recognizing that we all can “speak truth to power.” In 2013, U.S. President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Medal of Freedom. We speak to power in three senses: * To those who hold high places in our national life and bear the terrible responsibility of making decisions for war or peace. * To the American people who are the final reservoir of power in this country and whose values and expectations set the limits for those who exercise authority. * To the idea of Power itself, and its impact on Twentieth Century life. Our truth is an ancient one: that love endures and overcomes; that hatred destroys; that what is obtained by love is retained, but what is obtained by hatred proves a burden. This truth, fundamental to the position, which rejects reliance on the method of war, is ultimately a religious perception, a belief that stands outside of history. Because of this we could not end this study without discussing the relationship between the politics of time with which men are daily concerned and the politics of eternity which they too easily ignore.” Page 124 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

power is not about wise-cracks on Comedy Central or Special Comments or street theatre. It is a fundamental shift in the way we all think about violence and how to reject it. “Speaking truth to power,” is a commitment to peace that must manifest itself in everything we do. Don’t get me wrong, Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann, Stephen Colbert and the media all have their roles to play but “speaking truth to power” is not entertainment or somebody else’s responsibility. It’s what we all need to do in order to fight the evil that we all talk about.” If you look at the original pamphlet and the article on Daily Kos, there are many suggestions on how we can accomplish fighting the negatives in the world. First, one must recognize that in today’s world both the pamphlet and article are extremely outdated, given the pamphlet was written in 1955 at the pinnacle of the Cold War and the article on the other hand, is now more than eight years old. Page 125 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Let’s review the basic tenet of the pamphlet, which states: “Our truth is an ancient one: that love endures and overcomes; that hatred destroys; that what is obtained by love is retained, but what is obtained by hatred proves a burden.” We need to focus on the three “positive” sections of the statement: “Our truth is an ancient one: that love endures and overcomes; …that what is obtained by love is retained….” In this article, I offer another perspective on how we can accomplish the same goal of “speaking the truth to power,” with an ancient, yet more modern approach. I was recently introduced to the field of thinking, generally accepted as “The 3 Principles.” According to Michael Neill, an internationally renowned transformative coach and the best-selling author in his November 16, 2014 blog, “The 3 Principles” is known by a variety of names. In the field of social work, it is often referred to as “Health Realization”; in the field of therapy, as “Psychology of Mind”. It has been referred to as “Innate Health”, “Principles-based Psychology”, and in the field of coaching as both “Clarity Coaching” and “Transformative Coaching.” As I am new to this teaching, there is no possible way for me to do justice to the power of these principles; even attempting to describe them as “things” diminishes them. Michael goes on to say that “each one of these seemingly separate fields have been developed on a foundation of an understanding of three spiritual principles, or fundamental universal constants: TOC

Mind is the formless intelligence and energy Thought is the creative force, which acts

of all things. It is the fundamental nothingness at the heart of everything - the infinite spaciousness out of which all things in the world of form come into being. It is that which all religions point to and all seekers seek the source of life itself.

as the missing link between both the spiritual and psychological and the formless and the form. It is like the “playdough” of the universe, endlessly being shaped and reshaped into the realities we live in.”

The 3 Principles philosophy is based on the Consciousness is the field of pure aware- body of work from Sydney “Syd” Banks, an ordinary working-man who experienced a ness that allows life to be both experienced spontaneous and profound spiritual enlightand understood. While we sometimes talk about “levels of consciousness,” as a spiritual enment in1973. principle Consciousness is a pure, constant As the founder of The 3 Principles, he is recawareness, unaffected and unbounded by ognized as a well-known philosopher, author how “awake” or “asleep” we happen to be in and lecturer who shared the understanding of the moment. The Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought. Through his experience, he uncovered three foundational Principles, elemental principles that create and govern the human experience: Universal Mind, Universal Consciousness and Universal Thought.

we liberate ourselves to enjoy our life. As we follow the basic tenet of love, we gain greater happiness, inner peace and become more loving towards others.

His profound insights into the function and power of human thought continue to help countless people experience significant results personally and professionally.

As we experience more wisdom and insight in our work while following the basic tenet of love, we connect more deeply with others because we’re not so obsessed with only ourselves. We can live more in the creative flow of inspiration and have the ability to move swiftly through various challenges.

Syd explains that if we can take the understanding of how life works, we eliminate much of the fear and superstition. Therefore,

You may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with “speaking truth to power?” Based on Syd’s philosophy, there is a space

within us where we are already perfect, whole, and complete and that is pure consciousness. As Michael Neill says, “the space inside of which all thoughts come and go.” He goes on to say that, “when you rest in the feeling of this space, and when you operate from the infinite creative potential of this space, you produce high levels of performance and creative flow.” If and when you explore this space more deeply, you will find yourself growing and living your life connected more deeply and living in the flow of inspiration, providing you the freedom to trust your intuition and speak the truth from your heart, which increases the power of “Self.” By increasing the power of your “Self,” you are able to share your truth from a “higher place,” which then allows you to “speak your truth to power.”

It is my fondest wish that this body of work briefly described above allows you “to speak your truth to power” through a natural, healthy strive for love and with satisfaction and meaning in your interpersonal world. This type of power represents a movement toward self-realization and transcendent goals in life; its primary aim is mastery of self, not others. This philosophy to “speak your truth to power” is more an attitude or state of mind than an attempt to maneuver or control others. It is based on competence, vision, and service. However, when externalized, it is likely to be more generous and creative, providing you the power to lead yourself and others from a place you have never experienced before.
