What is a Female Executive? I am the one that makes the bread, weaves the fabric, creates the peace, negotiates the smiles, shuts it down and wakes it all back up. I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind. I am the one that gives birth and keeps life going-whether I have to nudge it with my heart, my mind, my blood or my foot! I keep the bass rhythm of life moving. “I am the female that executes the needed, the necessary and the fantastic.” I am ”THAT” female executive.

Message From the Editor Welcome to one of our special holiday issues for E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. The theme for this issue is “There’s Great & Then There’s LegendaryBuilding 100 Year Old Brands”. We have two amazing interviews with Branding professionals Howard Lim and Linkedin Diva Lori Ruff. Also, in this issue, we feature two legendary cattle women Terry Stuart of Stuart Ranch and Barbara Van Cleeve Executive Rancher and professional photographer. During this holiday season, we are featuring awesome recipes, tips on holiday etiquette, Wines that go with turkeys and variety of turkeys that go with everything! Before you get started with this issue, I’d like to introduce a concept called “Do the Deep Work”. When I say “Do the Deep Work” I mean be willing to tear down old habits and behaviors in order to rebuild better or new ones. Every profession, whether it is sports, music, medicine, technology-you name it, when that industry changes or you reach a plateau then it’s time to “Do the Deep Work”. We’ve all seen television shows where they find a house, strip it down and rebuild it with new appliances, walls, internal design etc. When the team is done, you can’t even tell that it was ever the same house. The designer had a vision that required a major removal of the old in order to rebuild from the foundation up. This concept is transferable to individuals, careers, relationships and especially marriages. I challenge you to build things with lasting foundations. You can always add on, update, move things around and completely renovate, as long as the foundation is strong. Take time to build “air ducts” aka lines of communication, be patient and gentle with yourself and others . You can do the deep work, you can take it to the next level, you can tear down the old and bust out with the new!! You can!! I hope you enjoy this issue. Althea Ledford

grow to be teenagers you may hear “teens are a bit isolated and angry, but don’t worry it’s their hormones”. These adages and more are commonly heard in our culture, but today modern-day slavery interrupts these maxims and the ability to be free for some children in our country.

Modern Day Slavery In the United States we have many expressions about children. You may hear “let a child be a child”, “let children be free and play”, or “let the child explore, he’s a child and that’s what they do”. When children Page 30 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Kristina was “a high school student” in Inglewood, CA and coerced into sex trafficking. Her trafficker groomed her for one year with words of affection, being her best friend, telling her that her friends were not good for her, and that she could rely on him. She felt like she “needed to be loyal to him. You know that ride or die chick. Down for your man. So, to help him out”, he coerced her to have sex with adult men for money. “Helping him out” was followed by force and a mandate to give all monies received to him, and years of sexual exploitation. The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) by force, fraud, or coercion to perform a sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act is sex trafficking. Boys as well as girls are victims of this horrific crime also known as modern day slavery. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Many of the images bout Sex Trafficking in the United States are images of children in a third world country. This is misleading because sex trafficking is rampant in the United States of America. Kristina was an American high school student in the beautiful sunny state of California. A state where many come to try to realize their dreams. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “every two minutes a child from the United States is trafficked for the purpose of human exploitation”. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that over 100,000 children are victims of sex trafficking. Foster children are especially vulnerable to being lured into sex trafficking and other forms of human trafficking. Clearly, this is a civil rights matter and a crime.

This is a Civil Rights Matter and a Crime

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest civil rights organization in the United States of America (www.naacp.org). On September 28, 2019, Dr. Anissa McNeil led the NAACP Inglewood/South Bay Branch Sex Trafficking Information Forum at Inglewood City Hall. A Page 31 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

View Mental Health Services, Centinela Youth Services, Inc. and Saving Innocence. These experts defined sex trafficking, informed the residents and community members of Inglewood how children are forced, frauded, and coerced into sex trafficking. The panel of experts also provided statistics on human and sex trafficking. The panel also included two survivors, Kristina and Tika, identified action steps for the NAACP Inglewood/South Bay Branch. Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA www.bacaworld.org), Forgotten Children, Inc (www.forgottenchildreninc.org), Children’s Law Center (www.clccal.org), LA County Department of Mental Health (https://dmh.lacounty.gov), Los Angeles County District Attorney of Los Angeles Bureau of Victims Services (www.da.co.la.ca.us), and Star View Community Services (httpps://www.starsinc.com) provided information booths filled with pamphlets, flyers, fact sheets about sex trafficking. Each organization had representatives who were very informative and guided community members to obtain and understand the information displayed at their information booth. The Sex Trafficking Information Forum was the first act by the Inglewood/South Bay Branch of the NAACP to address one the largest crime against crimes in our community. Why should you care? The children forced, frauded, or coerced into sex trafficking are not strangers. They are members of our community. They are our daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, church members, students, and community members. Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Foster children are extremely vulnerable to being forced, frauded, or coerced into sex trafficking. Children’s Law Center represents foster children in California Superior Court. Tiffani Cortez, attorney for Children’s Law Center- CSEC Unit reported “the majority of girls in our court are black and brown. Since CSEC court began our cases haven’t diminished but steadily increased”. Shari Farmer, Field Deputy of Bureau of Victim Services for Los Angeles County District Attorney reported that “on average a victim returns to the trafficker 12 times Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

After being abused from the age of 3, I was sexually exploited in Hotels close to LAX before he or she is able to leave their trafficker”. The victims of sex trafficking need support from social services and law enforcement to successfully leave their trafficker. Someone needs to stand up for their civil rights! Tika stated that “after being sexually abused since the age of 3, I was sexually exploited in hotels close to LAX. I had to work everyday so I would go into a store and take anything to be caught and sent to juvenile hall. Juvenile Hall was break for me. A time to rest, meet my basic needs, and sleep before going back to the motels to my Page 33 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

trafficker. I have been arrested 26 times and stayed with my trafficker until I was an adult”. Indeed, Tika needed the assistance of social services and law enforcement, but she also needs someone to stand up for her right to be a child and not to be forced into sex trafficking. Who will stand up for her civil right to be a child, live freely, and without the threat of being forced into sex trafficking? Both Kristina and Tika are African American. Is there a reasonable expectation, that a baby has a right to be a child? Do we have the right to be children? Do African American children have the right to be children? Do children or should children have a right to be free from sex trafficking? Is that a civil right? Who will defend this basic civil right?

Historically, in the United States the NAACP has fought for the civil rights of African Americans. As a member of the illustrious organization, I believe that the NAACP is the entity to fight for their civil rights and I led an information forum to inform the community and begin our efforts to address one of today’s greatest civil rights issue for the African-American community and the country. We must stop merely watching this happen to children in our community and get informed and involved. In the United States, we have federal and state laws which protect children from abuse and neglect. Each state also has Foster Care Bill of Rights. The Child Protection Act Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

of 1933 which was enacted to help states improve the quality of their criminal history and child abuse records. These are just a few federal and state laws enacted to protect children. Is it reasonable to advocate for the inclusion of a child’s right to live free from sex and human trafficking in these laws? Is sex trafficking a civil right? Using the Information Forum as a catalyst, I have formed the NAACP Inglewood/South Bay Human Trafficking Task Force, and I will take the action steps provided by survivors Tika and Kristina and this prevailing question to continue to inform our community and begin to fight for children to live free from human and sex trafficking. About Dr. Carol Soloway Column Host I have managed to change careers after each decade of my life. With writing, I synthesized of all of the knowledge and skills I’ve accumulated along the way. My first career was as an English teacher during which time, I completed a Master’s degree in English. Ten years later, I went back to school and became a chiropractor and established a rewarding practice which my son - also a chiropractor now runs. Another decade passed and another career beckoned. I became a Qualified Medical Examiner and have been enjoying the challenges of that career for (of course) ten years.

Dr. Carol Soloway

Since writing has always been my passion, I returned to school and took numerous creative writing courses, including the Squaw Valley Community of Writers summer program. My first novel, SEX HAPPENS, became an Amazon bestseller. Now, I’ve written GRACIE’S GONE which is a novel about dark family secrets revealed when sixyear-old Gracie is abducted. Percentage of proceeds go to Child Rescue, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates trafficked children. I live with my wonderful husband who is nothing like any of the characters in the novel. Together, we have five grown sons with families of their own, all of whom have promised not to read the sex scenes. Page 44 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

because they do not know where to begin or fear leaving what is comfortable or they are in the throws of managing personal and / or business crisis and want to understand what next steps they should take. The game of life begins with your mindset and I help women who feel inadequate, burnt out, and straining under the yoke of too much to do in either their professional or personal life become unstuck from the mindset that plagues their success.

Paula Bridgewater The life of a woman has never been more celebrated as it is now. But rarely a blueprint is provided on how to manage the daily interior life that most women battle as they explore the frontier’s of career, entrepreneurship and the intense stress of balancing family and spouse. In the age of social media culture where successes are flaunted, few women have a safe space to talk about the things that are not going well. But for women, by nature our strength comes from being able to connect openly not only about our successes, but in particular about our failures large and small. For the past 10 years, I have coached women to handle the real stresses that they will face while climbing the corporate ladder, seeking clarity on their career transition Page 46 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Terry Stuart Forst Robert Clay Freeny, born January 14, 1812, came by stagecoach in 1838, to Fort Towson Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. He soon married Sarah "Sallie" Ellis, the daughter of John Ellis, the Choctaw son of Mo-Shu-laTubby. He was a famous chief of the Choctaw Indians back in Mississippi, prior to the tribes removal west on the Trail of Tears. Robert and Sarah's son, Robert Clay Freeny (Clay), was born on August 8, 1850. He was 13 years old in 1863 when his family moved

Sarah Ellis Freeny died July 24, 1868. At the time of her death, Sarah was 46 years old and the mother of 12 children- James, John, Andrew, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Robert, Henry, Ruben, Daniel, Benjamin and Frances. In late 1868, Robert Clay Freeny moved his family west of Caddo for a short time Clay Freeny married Josephene Baxter after the death of his wife Mary Beck in 1894. Clay and Josephene had 7 children. He raised cattle, horses, mules and farmed. In August 1902 Clay Freeny became “County and Probate Judge” of Blue County, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. He served in that capacity for four years and was forever recognized and identified as Judge Freeny. His only daughter with Josephene, Carrie Ida Freeny was born in 1900. She attended Tuskahoma (Red Warrior in Choctaw) Choctaw School for Girls. Tuskahoma has served as the capital of the Choctaw Nation. “Her transportation to school consisted of a buggy ride from the ranch” On January 24, 1880, Robert Terry Stuart was born to Champ Terry Stuart and Betty Raines in Lawrence, Texas. Champ Stuart was a cattle rancher, “one of the old timers who knew the trails by-ways of the Texas plains…a guy who had a way with lassos and a dogie” an excerpt from the book, This is Colonel Stuart by Henry G. Bennett. “The eldest of 2 brothers and 2 sisters, he grew up in a household where his father had a strong backbone and expected no less from his sons.”

After college, Colonel Stuart taught school, sold life insurance and wanted to study law. His “life saving” occupation came as a windfall-hauling rock and he made a killing.

As the oldest ranch in the state of Oklahoma under continuous family ownership, we are proud and honored to carry on a great family legacy. To quote my grandmother Carrie Ida Freeny Stuart, in reference to our forefathers, “These beloved pioneers have left a a great heritage for us. Many years of hardship and devotion to their country and family have produced hardy men of strong character. From this background came our great state of Oklahoma in which there is much pride among her people." - Terry Stuart Forst Page 53 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

In 1930 Colonel Stuart met Ida Freeny and in 1931 they married. It was the wish of Judge Freeny that his only daughter to have the family homestead. Meet Sandra Yancey I’m an ordinary woman … from a small town. My father died on my birthday when I turned five years old. My mother, from Mexico, raised me and my two older brothers on welfare until she remarried. My step-father died six weeks before I married the man I met my senior year in high school. (He was a drummer and no one thought we stood a chance.) I lost my brother to a car accident when I was 26 and he was 27. He was killed instantly. No goodbye, and no getting over it for a long time. My husband and I are still together. We’ve had to overcome all the regular stuff couples deal with, not to mention shifting careers and paychecks. We’ve raised two children, one of each. We are a close-knit family and fiercely protective of each other. These days make those teen years worth it. I invest constantly in my personal development. I earned my Master’s degree in Organizational Development from The American University in Washington D.C., and a two-year post-graduate certification in Organization and Systems Design from the prestigious Gestalt Institute. environments – you know, a bunch of small talk when I was focused on BIG dreams. And so, in a room above my garage, I bootstrapped my way to create one of the largest and most decorated business network organizations in North America, eWomenNetwork, a one-stop complete success system for entrepreneurs. It’s a multimillion-dollar enterprise with over 500,000 women connected through 118 chapters spread across North America, Canada and Australia.

I am featured in Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur’s Soul and have four other #1 bestsellers. I’ve produced a movie, The Glow Project, and because of it, I rang the NASDAQ bell and had my company’s logo featured in Times Square. (Such a cool moment!) I believe in giving back, too. My foundation has awarded cash grants to 115 non-profit organizations and scholarships to 167 emerging leaders of tomorrow. We provide free online business training to every non profit on the planet! CNN named me an American Hero for my philanthropic work. My principles for life are basic and practical. I don’t get distracted. that we take and the choices that we make each and every day. Take our three eWomenNetwork Orange County members spotlighted in this month’s edition... After being told by a school counsellor that her son’s dream - to become a brain surgeon was a ‘waste of time and money’ Shellee Howard put on her ‘mom face’, toured colleges, studied the admissions process for 20-30 hours a week on top of her day job, went back to college herself and secured seven full rides for her son before he finished high school. She then wrote How To Send Your Kids To College Without Losing Your Mind Or Your Money to help other parents realise and fulfill their kids’ dreams; so they didn’t need to go back to school!

Success leaves clues. Whether it’s a mom returning to high school to become a college counsellor after the system failed her son (read article here); or a celebrity chiropractor turned author bravely trekking 6500 miles in an RV to raise funds for the nation’s missing kids (read about Dr. Carol Here)… Success leaves clues. It leaves clues in our relationships, in our jobs, in our careers and in how we take care of ourselves and our families. It leaves clues in the actions we choose every day. Failure also leaves signs - which we can fix at any moment. Because it’s not enough to want to be successful, we have to choose to be successful and we do that by the actions Page 68 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Success leaves clues. In high school. Across the country. In the recording studio. To be truly successful is about making a decision.

It’s about deciding what we truly want and then making a commitment to achieve that desire, to carve a timeline and outline of how we’re then going to track and measure our progress. Success is just a series of best practices, done every day.

Gracie’s Gone to Child Rescue, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates trafficked children. And then there’s Vaughn Fahie, who since age 16, has recorded and produced over 10,000 hour-long sermons, even creating iTunes type platforms for his church’s ‘Download Club’. Not to mention turning a car accident six years ago that stopped brain activity in part of his left lobe and his prefrontal cortex, into a way to help the elderly, the sick and the terminally ill.

There are no limitations to what we can do. No matter what happens, because we are willing to do whatever it takes; whether it’s making our kids’ dreams come true, publishing a book, creating our signature talk, holding our first event, or simply just putting ourselves ‘out there’. It’s not about just making the effort. It’s about choosing, making the commitment and taking massive actions to set yourself up for success. Ask yourself each day, are the things I’m doing leading me closer to my goal? And don’t think you can do it alone. Find your community. We all need to surround ourselves with doers and believers, individuals that will empower us, support our ideas and shine a light upon our dreams. Student to College Without Losing Your Mind or Your Money. “And then I wrote a book about it so others could do for their children what I did for Ryan - he was offered seven full rides but chose Harvard - valued at $60,000 a year - for free; and graduated with zero debt in four years. “He’s now in his second year of Med School at the University of California, San Diego; next year he’ll decide if he wants to be a brain surgeon or orthopedic surgeon.” Ms. Howard, the founder of College Ready, based in Corona del Mar, who over the past two years alone has secured over $1 million in scholarship offers for B-average to Ivy League students, said sadly her experience with her son’s high school counselor was not uncommon - with just 1 counselor to 500 students on average, across the nation. Shellee Howard

And parents were not helping either.

High School Counselor Sends Mom Back to School

“They often leave the entire transaction to teenagers even though a college degree costs as much as a first home,” Ms. Howard said.

When 13-year-old Ryan Ouillette’s high school college counselor dismissed - as a ‘waste of time and money’ - his dream to attend an Ivy League College and become a brain surgeon, his mom did what all moms do...

“College debts range from $30,000 to $350,000 and yet parents allow their 17year-olds to effectively ‘buy their first home’ without even seeing it.

Mother-of-two Shellee Howard put on her ‘mom face’, toured colleges, studied the admissions process for 20-30 hours a week on top of her day job, went back to college herself and secured seven full rides for her son before he finished high school. “I did it because I was a single mom who couldn’t afford college and I had no idea how I was going to get my son into medical school, let alone pre-med,” said Ms. Howard, best selling author of How to Send Your Page 70 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

“And they’re going into massive debt because of it.” Ms. Howard said with 2300 accredited, nonprofit, four-year colleges and universities in the United States alone - and no uniform admission protocols - other common mistakes included: • Leaving college planning until the senior year when it was too late to fix academic mistakes or meet the 200 hours of community service hours necessary. • Wrongly assuming it was better for a Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

student to get all A’s in non-challenging classes that were not academically weighted, in lieu of a ‘rigorous’ curriculum. • Allowing children to pick subjects based on what their friends were studying or what their friends claimed colleges wanted. Parents also allowed students to apply for schools outside their budget and that did not offer aid - setting them up for disappointment even if they were accepted into the college academically.

Ms. Howard said with high school suicides at an all-time high due to college application pressure, stress and overwhelm; parents needed to help students eliminate activities that made little to no difference on the success of their College applications. “Testing is the quickest way to get a free or reduced cost to college,” she said. “If a student tests well in their junior year on the PSAT, i.e. they score at the top, they can get into several colleges for free based on just that one test. “Students need to know the minimum they need to do to get into college to achieve their dreams - with or without the approval of their high school counselor.”

Real lives’ of OC eWomen hits bestseller A celebrity chiropractor turned erotic novelist has used the ‘real lives’ of Orange County business women as inspiration for her latest best seller. Qualified Medical Examiner, Judge Judy oncamera expert and former English teacher Dr. Carol Soloway said she based characters and drew plot lines for her latest book, Gracie’s Gone, from real goings on inside the OC’s eWomenNetwork’s Chapter at Costa Mesa. Two of the police officers involved in the search for Gracie - Sgt Sabatino and Officer Tanya Targett - are named after OC eWomenNetwork’s Managing Director Diana Sabatino and former Australian investigative news journalist, Tanya Targett, who is on the OC eWomenNetwork leadership team. Currently on a national RV book tour, covering some 6500 miles to raise funds for missing children, ahead of National Missing Children’s Day on May 25, Dr Soloway said Biker’s Against Child Abuse (BACA) volunteers who presented at an OC meeting inspired the book’s ending. “They demonstrated how they present comfort bears to children who had been abused, trafficked and taken,” Dr. Soloway said. “It was so powerful that there were tears throughout the room and even though it was three years ago, it stuck in my mind so much, that when I wrote Gracie’s Gone, I had to draw upon that experience for the last scene - the BACA going to the child’s house after she’s returned.” Dr. Soloway, who last year received the International Association of Women’s “Woman of Achievement Award”, is donating 25 percent of each book sold to Child Rescue, an organization which helps to recover, rescue, and rehabilitate trafficked children. “Abductions and child trafficking are not issues that occur only in poverty-stricken nations or underdeveloped areas of the world,” she said. “It happens in our own backyard.

“In the United States alone, two full classrooms of children do not return home each school day and yet it costs just $1800 to rescue one child. “So, the goal is to recover enough children to fill one classroom and then from there, we’ll recover an entire school.” Orange County eWomenNetwork Chapter Managing Director Diana Sabatino urges American families to get behind Dr. Soloway’s ambitious 6500-mile RV trip around the country. “The story and characters grab your heart and put your attention on the reality of the nightmare of child abduction in our world,” Ms Sabatino said. “Carol’s talent in writing, her dedication to a cause and her desire to really make a difference is inspirational.” Ms. Sabatino said the eWomenNetwork was proud to support Dr. Soloway with nine chapters featuring her as their keynote speaker at their monthly meetings in Arizona, Texas, Virginia, New York, Connecticut and Vermont. “The eWomenNetwork is a women-focused organisation so the whole community rallied behind her to support her mission and to help her get her message out,” she said.

About Carol Soloway Dr. Soloway is a State Appointed Qualified Medical Examiner in chiropractic, a National Board of Chiropractic Examiner and International Association of Women (IAW) Orange County Chapter President. She is a chiropractor to the stars and this year received the IAW’s Woman of Achievement Award. Author of the bestselling novel Gracie’s Gone. Dr. Soloway is a mother of three, grandmother of 12 and plays a mean game of competitive tennis. Dr. Soloway is donating 25% of proceeds from Gracie’s Gone to help rescue, rehabilitate and recover missing children.

who gives a voice to small business owners and entrepreneurs. His ability to play any song from ear alone, on piano, clarinet, or saxophone translates into an unrivaled talent to ‘cut silent gaps’ turning multiple recordings into one perfect podcast take. “The gift of being able to play by ear means my hearing and my listening is very attuned to the cadence, flow and pace of who I’m recording,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn Fahie

As a 16-year-old he used a cassette deck to record and edit his pastor’s sermons. From cassette to CDs and MP3s, he’s since produced over 10,000 hour-long sermons, even creating iTunes type platforms for his church’s ‘Download Club’. But there’s more to Vaughn Fahie than sound bytes, there’s the car accident six years ago that stopped brain activity in part of his left lobe and his prefrontal cortex, which led to the meditative jazz ‘Peace of Mind’ CD and concerts he gives to the elderly as well as the terminally ill. “Whether it’s a podcast, their audiobook or a sermon, it means I can guide and coach them to make their speech more musical, more flowing and more engaging to listen to.” He said the key was to put intention into every word, as he does himself with his music. “Music enters into the soul without your mind’s permission and it is a carrier of any message that the musician is delivering,” the 48-year-old said.

“My music, when I play it, I play to the soul and it heals and it inspires. “My music encourages and it changes and it sets the atmosphere in every single note that I play because I play with intention and purpose. “And I do that whether it is to lift up internally, set the atmosphere in the room or event, or when I do healing serenades for people at the hospital.” His music also healed his own body. Suffering severe concussion just six years ago, unable to drive and struggling to speak - but with six major concerts already booked - he discovered his brain knew music on autopilot. “Even though I couldn’t finish sentences or drive, my musical performances were never affected,” Vaughn said. From his realization came another gift - the creation of his Peace of Mind CD - which he has given to those battling cancer, as well as sick children and elderly patients. “I learnt that as musicians, 95% of our brain is activated while we are playing and that’s why I made my CD, to help others,” he said. “Because music activates hand, motor skills, rhythm, listening and coordination. “When I play at the senior centres a lot of patients that can’t even speak will start tapping, smiling and clapping even though they never have been able to before. “Instrumental music without words seems to help people reflect in their memories to interpret the music any way they like, making it their own.

Turkeys

Traditional Baked Turkey Ingredients: • One 20 pound fresh whole turkey, giblets and neck removed from cavity and reserved • 3 sticks of unsalted butter, melted, plus 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic • Cheesecloth • Roasting pan • Foil 1) Rinse turkey with cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Let stand for 2 hours at room temperature. 2) Place oven rack on lowest level in oven. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Fold a large piece of cheesecloth into quarters and cut it into a 17-inch, 4-layer square. Immerse cheesecloth in the melted butter and let soak. 3) Place turkey breast side up, on a roasting rack in a heavy metal roasting pan. Page 89 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Remove the pop up cooking timer that comes with the turkey. It's best to use an instant-read thermometer because it is much more accurate. Fold wing tips under turkey. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon each salt, granulated garlic, and pepper inside turkey. Fill large cavity and neck cavity loosely with as much stuffing as they hold comfortably; do not pack tightly. Tie legs together loosely with butcher's twine. Fold neck flap under, and secure with toothpicks. Rub turkey with the softened butter, and sprinkle with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, granulated garlic, and pepper. 4) Lift cheesecloth out of melted butter, and squeeze it slightly, leaving it very damp. Spread it evenly over the breast and about halfway down the sides of the turkey; it can cover some of the leg area. Place turkey, legs first, in oven. Cook for 30 minutes. Using a pastry brush, baste cheesecloth and exposed parts of turkey with butter melted butter. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue to cook for 2 1/2 more hours, rotating the pan and basting every 30 minutes and watching pan juices; if the pan gets too full spoon out juices (reserving them for gravy). 5)After the third hour of cooking remove and discard cheesecloth. Turn roasting pan so that the breast is facing the back of the oven. Baste turkey with pan juices. If there are not enough juices, continue to use melted butter. The skin gets fragile as it browns, so baste carefully! Cook 1 more hour basting after 30 minutes. 6) After this fourth hour of cooking, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. Be careful not to poke into a bone. The temperature should reach 180 degrees (stuffing should be between 140 degrees and 160 degrees) and the turkey should be golden brown. The breast does not need to be checked for temperature. If legs aren't fully cooked, baste turkey, return to oven, and cook another 20 to 30 minutes. 7) When fully cooked, transfer turkey to a serving platter, and let rest for about 30 minutes. Slice, serve, an enjoy! Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Deep Fried Turkey Ingredients:

Smoked Turkey Ingredients:

• 1 (10-pound) turkey • 2 tablespoons House seasoning, recipe follows • 2 tablespoons of your favorite dry rub • 3 to 5 gallons peanut oil

• 1 (12 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed • 1 (20 pound) bag high quality charcoal briquettes • hickory chips or chunks

Cooks Note: To measure the amount of oil needed to fry the turkey, place turkey in fryer, add water to top of turkey, remove the turkey and the water line will indicate how much oil will be needed to fry your turkey. Having too much oil can cause a fire. The pot should not be more than 3/4 full or the oil could overflow when the turkey is added.

Directions:

Directions:

1. Place the charcoal into the bottom pan of the smoker. Light the coals and wait for the temperature of the smoker to come to 240 degrees F (115 degrees C). Lightly oil grate. 2. Rinse turkey under cold water, and pat dry. Place hickory chips into a pan with water to cover. 3. Place turkey onto the prepared grate. Add 2 handfuls damp chips at start of cooking, then a handful every couple of hours during the cooking process. Leave the lid on - DO NOT keep looking at turkey, or you will let the heat out! Continue smoking until the internal temperature of the turkey reaches180 degrees F (82 degrees C), or keep going until the coals die out. Page 90 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Wash bird inside and out, and allow to drain. Rub turkey all over with House Seasoning. Coat turkey with dry rub. Allow the bird to sit until it reaches room temperature. Heat peanut oil in a turkey fryer or a very, very large stockpot to 350 degrees F. Lower turkey into hot oil, very carefully, making sure it is fully submerged. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird. Remove turkey from oil and drain on paper towels. House Seasoning: 1 cup salt, 1/4 cup black pepper & 1/4 cup garlic powder. Game plan: The heat and time required to safely

Oyster Cornbread Dressing Ingredients: •

2 1/2 pounds cornbread

2 sticks (8 ounces) unsalted butter, plus more as needed

2 cups medium-dice celery (about 6 medium stalks)

1 cup peeled, medium-dice celery root, also known as celeriac (about 1/2 medium celery root)

3/4 cup small-dice red onion

Kosher salt

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh thyme leaves

1 tablespoon celery seeds, crushed

Freshly ground black pepper

1 1/2 cups stock or low-sodium chicken broth

12 fresh oysters, shucked and liquid reserved

3 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves.

To save time, you can make your cornbread ahead of time and freeze it. If you don’t want to make your own, buy a pan of good-quality cornbread at a bakery or specialtyfoods store.

Special equipment: An oyster knife has a broad, thin, but sturdy and rigid blade. Some have a small hook at the tip to help wedge open the shell. An oyster knife Page 92 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

cook stuffing that’s packed into a good-size turkey usually results in a breast with the flavor of sawdust. The stuffing should be cooked to 160°F, the same internal temperature required for the turkey, so you’d think it would work perfectly. But when the bird is at 160°F and ready to serve, the stuffing (insulated against the oven heat by the bird) is still undercooked and needs at least another 90 minutes in the oven. Which is why preparing your stuffing separately, as done here, is ideal. The cornbread needs to dry in the oven overnight, so plan accordingly.

Instructions: 1. Heat the oven to 275°F and arrange a rack in the middle. 2. Using your hands, crumble the cornbread into pieces no larger than 3/4 inch onto a rimmed baking sheet. Spread into an even layer and bake for 15 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the cornbread dry out inside the oven overnight. 3. The next day, transfer the cornbread to a large bowl and set it aside. Heat the oven to 350°F with the rack in the middle. Coat a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with butter; set aside. 4. Melt 1 1/2 sticks of the measured butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the celery, celery root, and onion, season with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 minutes. 5. Add the thyme and celery seeds and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to the bowl with the cornbread. 6. Drizzle the stock or broth and the oyster liquid into the bowl and stir until completely incorporated. Fold in the oysters, eggs, and parsley. 7. Transfer the stuffing to the prepared baking dish. Cut the remaining 1/2 stick of butter into small pieces and scatter them over the top of the stuffing. Bake until golden brown on top, about 40 minutes. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Instructions: 1. Heat the oven to 375°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Coat a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with butter and set aside. 2. Place the cornbread in a large bowl; set aside. 3. Melt the measured butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until foaming. Add the apples, celery, onion, salt, sage, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion has softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Apple Pie

• 10 Tbs. (1 1/4 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 10 Tbs. cold vegetable shortening, cut into pieces • 7 Tbs. ice water • 1 tsp. distilled white vinegar For the filling:

• 2 1/2 lb. baking apples, peeled, cored, quartered and cut lengthwise into slices 1/2 inch thick • 1/2 cup sugar, plus more as needed • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg • 1 Tbs. fresh lemon juice • 2 Tbs. unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 1 egg yolk • 1 Tbs. heavy cream

Directions: To make the pastry, in a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center, add the butter and shortening and, using your fingertips, rub them into the flour mixture until small, flat pieces form. In a cup or small bowl, combine the water and vinegar. Using a fork, gently mix just enough of the liquid into the flour mixture so it comes together in a rough ball; do not overwork. Discard the remaining liquid. Divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours. To make the filling, in a bowl, toss together the apples, the 1/2 cup sugar (adding more to taste if the apples are tart), cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice.

and sides of the dish. Trim the edges even with the rim. Roll out the remaining dough into a 10-inch round about 1/8 inch thick. Turn the apples into the pastry-lined pan, mounding them slightly in the center. Dot evenly with the butter. Brush the edges of the dough with water. Fold the dough round into quarters and unfold over the apples. Press together the top and bottom crusts to seal, then trim the edges flush with the rim of the dish and crimp to form an attractive edge. In a small bowl, beat together the egg yolk and cream and brush over the pastry. Make a few slits near the center to allow steam to escape. Bake for 25 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F and continue to bake until the apples are tender (insert a knife blade through a slit) and the top is golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes more. Transfer the dish to a wire rack and let the pie cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. Makes one 9-inch pie; serves 8.

Pumpkin Pie

• • • • • • • • •

1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1 cup half-and-half 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional 1 piece pre-made pie dough Whipped cream, for topping

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color. For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-andhalf, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.

Ingredients: • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened • 2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed • 1 cup sugar Page 98 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream.

Turkey and Wine-Perfect Together! Laurie Foster The Wine Coach

For people that love food and wine, Thanksgiving just might be the perfect holiday. It is the one time of year we assemble where it’s about dining and thankfully no major gift giving is involved. The traditional meal in our house consists of the infamous turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and if Page 104E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

maybe some green bean casserole to round out the plate. With so many different dishes in one meal it may seem like finding a wine that pairs with everything is as likely as balancing the budget. With a little work however you can find some great wines that can handle the variety of dishes found on a Thanksgiving dinner table. As far as the budget goes we’ll leave that to Washington. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Sparkling Wines are great way to start your turkey dinner especially if they have a touch of sweetness or at least ample fruit. This allows them to stand up to the spices and herbs that are found in most of the side dishes. Try a Champagne or sparkler that is not Brut or bone dry. Extra Dry styles are the next step up in sweetness and you can find great examples in many price ranges from Italy, France, Spain or California. One of my personal favorites is Italian Prosecco. Made in the Veneto region of northeast Italy, Prosecco has fruit flavors of apple and citrus and many are frizzante or semi-sparkling making them softer as well as food friendly. There are several white wine grape varieties that have both the fruit and acid to handle a Thanksgiving feast. My favorites include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris and Viognier. You can find great domestic wines that fit this bill or if you are feeling adventurous look to France, South Africa or Australia. If you cannot bear to be without Chardonnay, try a lighter unoaked style from Page 105 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

California, Australia or New Zealand. These will usually say unoaked, unwooded or virgin on the bottle to indicate they are not aged in oak barrels. These Chardonnay have fresher fruit flavors and retain more food friendly acidity than the bigger oaky styles. Don’t forget red wine. According to recent studies by the Wine Market Council red wine is preferred by 60% of wine drinkers so you’d better have some red wine options at the table. Fortunately there are several reds that will be a great addition to your Thanksgiving festivities. Pinot Noirs are a great option because they not only have great fruit flavors but enough acidity to stand up to the salt and acids found in many of the Thanksgiving dishes. Syrah and Zinfandel are also good choices with jammy fruit and a touch of spice to complement the flavors on your plate. Zinfandel is a California specialty but you might look to its Italian relative Primitivo for a change of pace. If you want to spice things up try a Syrah (aka Shiraz) from Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

California, Washington, Australia or the Rhone Valley in France. To add something new to this year’s dinner start with a sparkling wine to loosen everyone up and then serve several white and red wines with the meal. Then everyone can compare how each wine pairs with the various side dishes as well as the Turkey. It adds a modern twist to your traditional meal!

Try these wines to liven up your Thanksgiving feast: Mionetto Prosecco NV, Veneto, Italy Made from Glera grapes, these sparklers from the Veneto region of Italy are made in a variety of styles from frizzante, which in Italian means slightly sparkling, to fully sparkling like Champagne. Prosecco tends to be fruitier than Champagne or other dry sparklers making it more accepted by a wide range of wine and beer lovers. Fruity, but dry, this lively wine is the perfect way to start off your Thanksgiving feast. Add a touch of peach nectar to a Prosecco, and you have what’s called a Bellini. Salute! (Retails $18)

Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing and goes with so many different dishes especially salads, appetizers, white meats and seafood. Some of the best New World Sauvignon Blancs come from New Zealand specifically the Marlborough region. New Zealand is made up of two islands; Marlborough is in the northern part of the south island. This wine has lively acidity and aromas of herbs, grapefruit and passion fruit. The fruit flavors along with its crisp acidity will help this wine stand up to all your turkey sides. (Retails $16)

Willamette Valley Vineyards Whole Cluster Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley Jim Bernau, owner and founder of Willamette Valley Vineyards, is obsessed with making the best Pinot Noir that the Willamette Valley can deliver. The Whole Cluster Pinot Noir uses a process similar to that in Beaujolais, France delivering a softer wine that has aromas much like that a fresh fruit berry salad. The balance of fruit, acidity and structure in this wine make this a perfect accompaniment to your Thanksgiving meal. (Retails $22)

The work force is fluid and will never offer the stability it had in previous decades.

You have to figure out how you are going to survive in an inconsistent, marginally predictable work environment. It’s time to retool yourself into an E3. E3 is a career planning concept that creates multiple ways to plug into the workforce. As career options change. E3 gives you the option of plugging into a project in at least 1 of 3 levels.

Question: Who should consider becoming an E3?

Answer: College students, anyone currently

This is a new concept in career planning. Students must design their education goals to be able to interchangeably plug into their career paths at least 3 levels. We have tagged those areas as Elf, Engineer and Entrepreneur. Students should select Universities that understand an E3 career strategy even if they call it something else. Those, already in the current workforce that the time to retools their skills set into an E3 format will experience: *Greater Career Agility, allowing them to connect and disconnect with a variety of teams and projects. *Greater stabilization of Income. Simply by having a greater range of earning options, you can create multiple streams of income. *Options to increase earning potential.

in the workforce or planning to continue working for the next 7 years.

Entrepreneur

Here’s How E3 Works

Retool Yourself as an E3. Develop the skill sets (in any discipline) to be able to interface with a variety of projects at these specific levels. It may take time but the payoff is worth it.

Engineer

Elf

They don’t all to be in the same area or profession. You’re creating career options, functionality and agility.

You must have a plan to Plug in. Through networking with entrepreneurs, corporations, Business owners and project managers, you create an awareness of your availability and skill sets. You become a temporary or permanent team member to a variety of projects.

Project #2

Start Plugging In

Engineer

Once you’ve networked and people know who you are and your skill sets, your ready to start practicing this new concept. As you become propficient in a new skill set, you can launch that into your network as well.

Elf Engineer

Page 111 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Engineer Project #1

For example plugging in as an elf for a large corporation while functioning as a engineer (specialist) on a couple of other projects.

Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Elf Elves Plug in.... Becoming an elf is the first step in creating enough relationships to gain a sense of control of your future. Elves benefit from networking and being available to do small or simple tasks with minimal training. The training requirement is relevant to the profession. For example a programmer would consider a small programming job and elf job for his skill set. On the other hand a managing chef would participate with certain projects taking instruction from the head chef making that would be his version of elfing. Elfing is a lot like that part time job that you can always come back to. The stronger your network, the stronger your elfing options. Instead of going through an agency, you marketing and Place yourself.

Page 112 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Great examples of Elf tasks include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Tutoring Moving Secretarial work Answering phones Programming Data entry Social media projects Packing Baby sitting Pet sitting House sitting Customer Surveys Quality checks Substitute Teacher

• • • • • • • • •

Bookkeeping Receptionist Stock Rooms Waitress Sales Transcribing Editing Manufacturing Paralegal

Elfing is actually the backbone to any project. Without someone to do the work, the projects could never be finished.

Engineer Engineers (Experts and Specialist) Plug in to trouble shot and problem solve.

an engineer (specialist), you must become trained in an area with longevity.

Plugging in as an Engineer (specialist) requires greater responsibility and usually pays significantly more. As an Elf, you can have little to no skills set but as an engineer or specialist you are the expert in that area.

For example you would not want to train in an areas that is becoming extinct due to a new technology. Or learning a skill that is being automated. So do your research.

Those in the workforce with both an elf network and an engineering (specialist) network can build up to a surplus of opportunities. Engineers are called in to design projects, perform a specialized task, trouble shoot or problem solve. Every person doing an E3 concept should be able to do something in the top 5% of the workforce. In the medical industry, an specialist would be the heart surgeon, the ear, nose and throat doctor or someone in medical research. In a technical environment an engineer would be someone designing a specific part of a program or testing a function within a program. In the food industry an engineer (specialist) would be the dessert or pastry chef. Because there is a greater investment of training to become Page 113 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Great examples of Engineering (specialist) include: • Program designer • System security • Social media analyst • Financial planner • Investment Banker • Business Developer • Business Planner • Any Specialized Craftsmanship • Senior Mechanic • Auditors • Fireman • EMT • Civil Engineer • Production Lighting Specialist • Attorney • Movie Directors • Stunt persons • Navy Seal

Entrepreneur You Plug into the Universe and people plug into you. Entrepreneurs are the creators and the visionaries. As an Entrepreneur, you require the services of both elves and engineers.

Every Entrepreneur that started from meager beginnings was either an elf, engineer or both.

This is the top of the food chain. Ideally, every E3 should be working on their own dream or plan for self employment. This is the final step in stabilizing one’s future.

The skill sets for becoming an entrepreneur are vast extending beyond both elf and engineer. By being an E3 you will plug into several corporate and entrepreneurial situations and learn from a variety of scenarios. You will also be able to observe the most up –to-date practices. You have the advantage of pollinating great business ideas.

Without your own dream you will always be at the mercy of the workforce, team or environment. The entrepreneurial track is riddled with failures and disappointment. But it also has the makings of an empire. Someone once said “the Best Way to Predict the Future is to Create it” One example of an elf turned engineer was Albert Einstein. He worked in a patent office when he began working on his theory of relativity. Thomas Edison had Engineers working for him and he himself was an Engineer turned Entrepreneur.

Page 114 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Another added benefit from working through an E3 situation is your partners and associates may be your first line of funding and/or support. Remember these are relationships your building over time and the best group to vouch for your character, skill set and work ethic. E3, and concepts like it, are the workforce of the future because you can change adapt and learn while you still can make a living.

Barbara Van Cleve’s heritage is rich with family history and firsthand experience. Her family’s ranch, the Lazy K Bar, was founded in 1880 on the east slopes of the Crazy Mountains near Melville, Montana. Her father, Spike Van Cleve, was a unique combination of writer, poet, Harvard scholar, and expert horseman-and “a pure quill Montanan,” as her father once put it. As a photographer, she has held a camera since she was 11 years old when her parents gave her a “Brownie” camera and a home developing kit. Her youthful interest in photography soon grew into a lifelong commitment. Ranch work also began early for Barbara. Barely six, she could be found helping at the corrals or sitting astride a horse. Ever since she has Page 116 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

been documenting the “true grit” and romantic beauty of her experiences on the ranch and on other ranches in the West. Along the way, she earned an MA in English Literature at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; she has been a Dean of Women at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois; and she taught English Literature, and later photography, for over 25 winters at DePaul University, Loyola University and Mundelein College, all in the Chicago area. At the same time photography continued to be a passionate avocation. In her free time, she worked for Rand McNally as a textbook photographer and also established her own stock photography agency. The long summers were usually spent on the family ranch in Montana.

She moved to Santa Fe in late 1980 to concentrate on photography full time and had her first major exhibition in the fall of 1985. Since that time she has had over 60 one-person shows and has been in over 100 group shows. Her work is in public and private collections in the United States as well as internationally. Her photography has been published in Roughstock Sonnets, (with poetry by Paul Zarzyski), Way Out West, and Cowboys:

When asked what is the one piece of advise you would give young professional women. She replies “ I would say that a younger professional woman must be fully secure in the knowledge of her skills and her work ethic. Above all she must realize that a male colleague is not superior to her simply because he is male. That is rubbish. Men have a narrower range of the abilities required in the professions; whereas women have a much broader range due in part to their femaleness i.e. intuition, empathy, emotional awareness etc. Therefore she should believe, be completely convinced of the strengths she brings to her position. She should not look to other people for confirmation of her belief in her self. Just be fully convinced that she can do anything she wants to do.

Yes, there is a "glass ceiling" but I don't advocate scheming and manipulation to break through it. She should be secure enough to resign a particular position if a well deserved promotion is not forthcoming. “

Navigating the Holidays Etiquette Tips for A Smoother Holiday

Once November hits we start thinking about the upcoming holiday season. For some of us that is exciting and for some of us we associate it with a fair amount of stress. Some of us are very excited to take our china out once a year and plan a full holiday meal and put up holiday decorations. Some people simply choose to go away for some of the holidays so they don’t have to host company or holiday meals and can avoid family conflict. No matter which religion you practice (or don’t) there are some common threads

Page 126E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

that getting ready for the holidays involve.

Table Settings What if I don’t own china or have enough nice dishes for a full table to set but I want to host Thanksgiving at my place this year? • China is beautiful but not necessary in my opinion. • Perhaps we registered for china if we are married and feel like we have to use it. It is often passed down as an heirloom and has sentimental value too. • Table settings can range from one plate Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

for the main course and one plate for dessert to multiple plates and courses. This is a personal choice of the host. There are numerous websites that show beautiful layout arrangements from simple to advanced. Know your stress level as a host or hostess so you can plan for a casual approach to entertaining so you can have fun with it and this starts out with figuring out your menu and dishes. • Generally if the host is having fun, everyone else will follow the lead. If the host appears stressed that may wear off on company. • It is perfectly acceptable to assign guests different dishes to bring. You should know that there are beautiful knock off disposable china place settings which can be purchased at Costco, Smart and Final, Party City, etc… amongst other Page 127 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

stores and this is very acceptable in this day and age. You can also buy beautiful disposable silverware (caution some of these are a little tricky to cut into chicken or meat with. I have had many a plastic utensil break on me). • Remember if you are a guest you are not typically the one doing the dishes. • Think about how many courses you are serving so you have an idea of the quantity you will need to buy before you get to the store. • Thanksgiving can be a great time to teach your children to set the table if you have not done this yet. • It is also a good time to explain why you use different sized forks and spoons with fancier meals. Sometimes adults don’t know the differences either.

Table Decorations • Some people like to place name holders at individual seats so people know where to sit. • This can also be very helpful with holiday events where there are divorced parents with both in attendance. • These can also be helpful if you are trying to mix up the ladies and the men and the children. • Making the placeholders can also become a great art project for children prior to the holiday if they are seeking a way to be involved in the day’s planning and events.

Page 128E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Putting flowers or holiday themed decorations out at the table gives a very festive look. • Candles are also a great addition if young children are not present. • For a guest coming that is very craft oriented they may have a field day making some holiday decorations, but be specific on what you are asking them to do. Make sure you will have room at the table for decorations before putting too much thought into it. • Michael’s Arts and Craft Stores have tons of great ideas on display and the supplies you need to replicate.

Invitations • Request an R.S.V.P. with a specific date on the invitation whether it is sent in the mail or electronically. As the host you need an accurate head count. • Don’t be surprised if a lot of people don’t R.S.V.P. even when you asked them to. In this case it is o.k. to follow up to see if they are coming.

Holiday Arguments • A holiday meal is not the time for divorced couples to discuss issues. If there is business that needs to be taken care of then find a way to approach this before or after Thanksgiving so everyone can enjoy the day! • If you and your spouse or significant other differ on how to handle conflict with company around figure it out early in your relationship. A quarrel with your mate can make a special day go south. • If you have issues with your own child(ren) be careful to pick your battles and really limit it on the holiday. You all want to have happy memories later on. • Don’t draw a third party into your issue. • If you need to vent to make it through the day then go outside far away where no one can hear.

Page 129 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Hosting In-laws or Your Own Parents I have a brother-in-law that I adore. He told me many years ago that after three nights house guests can smell like fish (meaning that 3 nights is the perfect amount of time for a visit). If guests are traveling a far distance it is o.k. to also consider the option of a hotel for a portion of the visit even though this may be uncomfortable to introduce. • Set a timeline for the visit before you make the invite. Choose this timeline very carefully with your spouse or significant other. • If your houseguests have airline tickets they will not be leaving early. • Have an activity planned each day. Even if the event is an afternoon card game or scrabble game or taking the Grandkids to the park, it will give everyone something to look forward to and offer some structure. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

• Take out food for dinner some nights of the visit is A o.k. You do not have to cook for your company very night nor should you be expected to. Your parents or in-laws should at least offer to pay for the take out food or eating out. • Have some good movies on hand for watching at night after dinner. • Keep up your regular exercise routine if you have one. Your houseguests will understand and you will need the break and mental release. • Encourage your houseguests to take a walk weather permitting so you can get some time alone in your house. • Allow and encourage in-laws to get involved. Everyone wants to feel needed. No one wants to feel like they are a burden. And, you may really need an extra set of hands if you are the host. • If you have children this is a good opportunity for you to get a date night out while the Grandparents watch the kids for a couple hours (if they are able to do this). It also gives special bonding time for the Grandparents and grandchildren. You may need to bring this idea up….. • If there is a real issue brewing in the house let the actual son or daughter of the In-laws be the one to deal with it.

Hostess Gifts Do not under any circumstances show up for Thanksgiving dinner without a hostess gift or a dish for the meal (even if you ask the host what you can bring and they say “just yourself.”). If you want to contribute a dish to the meal ask the host or hostess in advance what you can contribute towards the meal so you are not duplicating. Great hostess gift recommendations are: • Flowers Page 130E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

• Bottle of wine • Pretty disposable napkins for the bathroom (especially during the cold and flu season this is a great gift) Don’t show up and regift something that may have been given to you by a member of the group you will be with. Also if you are even considering regifting make sure the item is in its original packaging and has never been opened. If it is a food item make sure it is new and fresh. Thanksgiving reminds us to be thankful for what we have. Putting some advance planning into the holiday season and sharing some of the ideas in this article with your extended family can make the day special for everyone! Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Love One Woman’s Courageous Journey to Save her Marriage

By Shauna Shanks Love is easy to give when you are getting it back. Are we still called to God’s plan of how to love when we are getting none in return? Shauna Shanks’s brave journey through obedience reveals the outcome of when we dare to follow God’s ludicrous outline for love as described in 1 Corinthians 13. Wrecked with news of her husband’s affair and his request for a divorce, Shauna finds herself urgently faced with a decision. Does she give up and divorce her husband and move on, or does she try to fight for her marriage? The former choice seems to contradict God’s plan for how to love, such as “love never gives up,” “love is patient,” and “love is kind.”

Page 133 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Taking God at His word and assuming the love chapter was really meant to be followed literally word by word, she not only finds herself falling in love with her spouse again, but also falling in love with Jesus, which changes everything. First Corinthians 13 presents an audacious, illogical, and irrational context of how to love, meant to be applied to every marital context not just the fairytale marriage. If God’s instructions seem illogical and audacious, you might just expect the same kind of results in return! This book is not air-brushed. It was written in the midst of the author’s deepest trauma, and she purposefully did not edit out her mistakes and failures during that season. This book will resonate with women who do not feel like the picture-perfect Christian woman with the fairytale life and marriage. A Fierce Love is the story of a train wreck and reaching out to God not in the calm but in the chaos and finding hope for the future.

Rachel Maddow

Big Oil and Gas versus democracy winner take all In 2010, the words "earthquake swarm" entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia - including his iconic crystalencrusted white glove - was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon. Unlikely as it might seem, there is a thread connecting these events, and Rachel Maddow follows it to its crooked source: the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry. With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the Page 136E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

globe, revealing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas along the way, and drawing a surprising conclusion about how and why the Russian government hacked the 2016 US election. She deftly shows how Russia's rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia's rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the West's most important alliances, and the United States. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, most notably ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson. The oil and gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, "like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can't really blame the lion. It's in her nature." Blowout is a call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest businesses on Earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of the world's most destructive industry and its enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, "Democracy either wins this one or disappears." Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

w researched reports. And in our highly polarized world, Maddow amiably engages the staunchest conservatives, while never hesitating to expose their light-on-facts defenses. As a result, she's become the top anchor for MSNBC and a beloved representative for all that progressive America holds dear. The news that Maddow was the first publicly-out lesbian to anchor a prime-time TV news show seemed almost anticlimactic to her millions of viewers, who will be surprised and intrigued by little-known details of her life, as written by New York Times bestselling biographer Lisa Rogak.

The first biography of the most popular anchor in cable news. Rachel Maddow has beaten the odds in a way that’s novel in today’s America: she uses her brain. In a world of banal and opinionated soundbites, she regularly crushes Sean Hannity’s ratings thanks to her deeply Page 137 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Growing up in a conservative California town – and viewing herself as a perennial outsider – helped spark an early interest in activism. After attending Stanford and Oxford, she opted for a minimum-wage job as a radio DJ in a tiny Massachusetts market while finishing her Ph.D. She planned to pursue a career as an activist, but 9/11 changed all that, so she returned to local radio where she could help listeners by "explaining stuff." A stint at Air America raised her national profile, which led to her groundbreaking MSNBC show where she dissects the news of the day with an approach found nowhere else on TV.
