Mindfulness as a Practice Just as any skill we perfect, Mindfulness is a practice. The

Be kind to yourself. Start out being mindful in small amounts of time every day and gradually focus on extending your “Mindful time” daily. It gives us the ability to cultivate awareness, the capability to stop our mind chatter, and keeps us from going to the past or projecting into the future. Based on my experience there are several forms of Mindfulness. The first is Basic Meditation, the second is Mindfulness Meditation, and the third is Mindfulness Living. Look at them as being branches on the Tree of Life. They are all part of the tree, yet each of the branches has a different distinction. In Basic Meditation the purpose is to flow inward. The intention is to guide the mind into releasing itself, and to give our thinking a rest. This can support us in realizing our higher self and create oneness with the divine.

An example would be guided meditations that take you to the forest, beach or somewhere amazing to you; this is an individual and personal process. In Mindfulness Meditation the intention is to train the mind to focus on the experience we are having in the present. We are consciously focusing on a designated thought that arises from our awareness and we have no judgment about it. An example would be to close one’s eyes and concentrate on what is happening in the present.

Mindful Living

is an artful way of being aware of your surroundings and the habits that we have at any given moment. It is a way of looking at what we do on a conscious basis where our choices reflect our actions on purpose. An example of that would be being consciously aware of the food we are eating at the present moment, or brushing our teeth with awareness at the time we are doing it, or having a telephone conversation with a friend and actually paying attention to what they are saying, and not checking email, Facebook or Twitter while we are talking to them!
