Tukutane Dar is a biennial art symposium which was launched for the first time in 2020 aimed at bringing together artists, curators and other art stakeholders to engage in a week full of presentations, panels, workshops and showcase events at different locations across the city of Dar es Salaam.

the swahili phrase "Tukutane" meaning "let's meet or let's gather"
The core intention of Tukutane Dar is to provide opportunities for networking and dialogue that stimulatecreativity, connection and collaboration in the arts, building a more resilient arts ecosystem across Africa.
"It is a 5 day experience of art, film, music and dance across 7 different locations in Dar es Salaam"
The week officially began at Nafasi Art Space with roundtable discussions centered around the first theme of the week "Creativity"
The curatorial masterclass preceded the exhibition opening which was the official launch at one of the partner venues, Rangi Gallery.

"First impression matters"
The opening day of the event set the tone for the entire week.
Imagine sitting in a roundtable with various art enthusiast from around the globe discussing and sharing about art!
From the beginning of the first day of the arts week, the imagination ceased to exist, and the reality set in!
Tukutane Dar brought together delegates, artists and other art enthusiasts who engaged in open roundtable discussions, therefore creating a room for people to connect and discuss possibilities of future collaborations.
Q. How can we support the production of art that is bold, brave and visionary?
This was an open discussion that required two venues to be tackled.
In the afternoon, a Curatorial Masterclass was held at Rangi gallery where curators, Dr. Sheyi Bankale, Ms. Rosie Olang and Julia Taonga
Kaseka from UK, Kenya and Zambia respectively, provided their insights and views as they facilitated this masterclass to a group of invited artists, curators and delegates.
Finally..
The dialogues continued by practically engaging the audience with 6 artists who showcased their works in an exhibition named "I See You See Me" at Rangi Gallery in the evening.

Week continued at 2 other venues namely, CDEA and Ajabu Ajabu Audio-Visual House
A Film Writing & Review Workshop was facilitated at the Ajabu Ajabu Audio-Visual house followed by film screenings from Nafasi Film Club & a feature film from Flora Gomes.

Roundtable discussions began early in the morning at another partner venue, Culture a Development East Africa (CDEA).

In roundtables, artists, curators and deleg engaged in discussions about the theme and interesting points were laid out.
"When speaking of visibility we discussed art as a sector, art as a valid form of work, and art as a value. In our discussions, the visibility of these were centered around the proper use of social media, and possibily campaigning on specific topics"

In the afternoon, project presentations fro former and current grantees of the Feel fre grant program followed.
Later on, the discussions moved to a new ve Ajabu Ajabu Audio-Visual House, where a Fil Writing and Review Workshop was conducted followed by screening of short films create the Nafasi Film Club members and a feature by Flora Gomes.

arts week day 03 Two workshops were hosted at another partner venue known as ASEDEVA Namely, Theatre + Community Development, and Mapping Creative Spaces 023 - Evening thematic overview 1 - 5 F E B 2 0 2 3 The 3rd Day began at the Creative Arts department of the University of Dar es Salaam, offering a chance for students and staff to engage in panel discussions focusing on the impact of arts in the society. 03 Feb 2023Morning
In a glimpse of an eye, it was already day 03 of the arts week and discussions were centered around the third and final theme for 2023, "Impact".
In the morning, the artists, curators and delegates joined the community of artists at the University of Dar es Salaam Creative Arts Department to discuss the question:
Q. "How do we make art more impactful and measure what contributions it makes to society?"
A panel discussion moderated by Remi Busch was facilitated, inviting creative directors from various art spaces around the world, Rucera Seethal, Dr. Sheyi Bankale, Teesa Bahana and Samba Yonga from South Africa, UK, Uganda, and Zambia respectively.
In the afternoon, discussions moved to another partner venue, Art for Social & Economic Development in Africa (ASEDEVA) where two workshops were held, namely, Theatre for Community Development as well as Mapping of Creative Spaces.

The evening was even more exciting with live music performances from different contemporary artists, Makadem from Kenya and Duutopacoustic from Bagamoyo, Tanzania in what was called Marafiki Night Live.

In attempts to foster the exchange between artists and art stakeholders, Tukutane Dar has been able to successfully bridge the gap between the two through inviting art delegates. The delegates constituted creative directors, established curators and art managers from different countries around the world coming together for a series of exhanges with local artists and art practitioners taking part in the arts week.

Nafasi Art Space introduced, for the first time, the Nafasi Mobile App that is aimed at promoting and selling artist works online by organizing online auctions and sales.
In acknowledging the contribution of the arts week to the development of Tanzanian art industry, the Executive Secretary of the National Arts Council of Tanzania, Dr Kedmon Mapana shared the new vision of the arts council in developing the Tanzanian art industry
The arts week marked a very important occassion for the 2022 Nafasi Academy cohort as they showcased their artistic progress throughout 2022, topped off with their certification new artist graduates of the Nafasi Academy for Contemporary Art
Finally...
The night was full of entertainment as we witnessed traditional dance from 4 traditional dance crews and 1 solo Singeli singer. It was a whole vibe at Nafasi Art Space
04 Feb 2023 - Evening
At last, all the entertainment returned home to Nafasi Art Space.
For the first time ever, Nafasi Art Space introduced its mobile Application.

Was the App soft-launch all? No! A presentation from the Executive Secretary of the National Arts Council of Tanzania, Dr. Kedmon Mapana, followed as he shared with the artists and delegates about the new vision of the arts council (BASATA).
"The new vision of BASATA is centered around a paradigm shift, moving from policing the arts, to supporting arts development"

Afterwards, the 2022 cohort of Nafasi Academy artists were awarded certificates for successful completion of the arts course from Nafasi Art Space that was proceeded by a showcase of all the artworks they made throughout the year.
And finally...
The night at Nafasi Art Space was equiped with music entertainment as 4 traditional dance crews from different parts of Tanzania and 1 solo Singeli singer from Dar Es Salaam
