Executive Summary

In 2023, Nafasi Art Space has made good strides towards realising its vision and objectives as outlined in its Strategic Plan 2021/26, the organization's notion of success extends much beyond sound financial standing. In particular, Nafasi Art Space provides arts education to up-andcoming artists and underprivileged communities in the community, hosts live performances, ensures the highest calibre of artistic productions, facilitates exchanges with regional and international artists in the creative and cultural sectors, and—above all—provides a space for artistic collaboration and exchange. Nafasi Art Space exists to serve the larger Tanzanian artistic community as an inspiring home for the arts and exchanges.

Under the banner of the "Tukutane Nafasi" event series, Nafasi Art Space has held a number of public programmes and events in the past year in addition to Tukutane Dar Arts Week, a weeklong celebration of innovative artistic endeavours, exhibitions, discussions, and performances. In her role as host and coordinator, Nafasi had the honour of working with a variety of community venues and cultural partners to produce a truly remarkable event. The second event that had the Nafasi grounds buzzing with artistic activity was Wikiendi Live, a two-day festival that unites diverse artists from Tanzania and other African nations.

Executive Summary

Twelve talented curators and arts administrators are graduated from our main programme, the Nafasi Academy, and go on to contribute to Tanzania's artistic and cultural landscape. Nafasi was able to grow its network by supporting eight additional grantees from across Tanzania, the bulk of whom were located outside of Dar es Salaam, thanks to the "Feel Free" Incubations award with a total amount of 137,243,738 TZS disbursed to 2023 grantees.

Through the Global giving platform, Nafasi Art Space was able to raise $16,000 towards the goal of $50,000 in an going campaign. Throughout the reporting period, Nafasi continued to search for various revenue channels and grants through new and existing partners including the EU in Tanzania, World Bank, Total Energy Foundation and IGNITE Culture which raised a sum of 600,574,000 TZS for various project implementations and artistic activities.

Looking back, Nafasi can say that 2023 was a good year in making strides towards its four main strategic goals: expanding audience involvement, developing partnerships and networks, developing artistic growth, and ensuring the long-term viability of the organisation.

2023 nafasi academy

The 2023 Nafasi Academy for Curatorial Practice and Arts Management began during the Tukutane Dar Arts Weekend, where 25 shortlisted candidates took part in the week-long symposium. 18 candidates were then selected for the 10-month training programme and started their official training on 27 February 2023. The curatorial academy went through four intensive modules: The Curator and the Self, The Curator in Time and Space, The Curator and the Art (ist), and The Curator and the Audience.

A highlight experienced by the academy cohort included actively participating in the preparation of Torrents exhibition (June, 2023) and the Feel Free Grantees Showcase (August, 2023) as part of their practical exercise. As part of their training, the curatorial academy was placed with different Nafasi partners within the country for a month-long training to sharpen their skills. Some of these partners include Mkuki

na Nyota Publishers, UwaziBorn Talent, Action Music Academy, Mazi Arts & Culture, and Chamwino Arts Centre, to mention a few.

The Nafasi Academy cohort highlighted a number of important outcomes, such as improved ability to write creative and curatorial proposals, improved capacity to organise exhibitions and events under minimal supervision (obtained by actively participating in various Nafasi events), a better comprehension of the art community and methods to become involved, and, most importantly, increased self-assurance as curators.

The projects showcased will also be pitched in January 2024 and a few will be selected for the Incubation Grant.

A huge congratulations to the 2023 cohorts who have showed tremendous growth in their journey from when they started to their present state.

digital art lab

A subsidiary of the Visual Arts Department, The Digital Art Lab stands as a project aimed at supporting contemporary digital artists within and outside the Nafasi community by offering them a space to create, showcase, skills development and potentially collaborate in the realm of digital arts.

Throughout the year 2023, The Digital Art Lab has paved the way for innovations within the Nafasi Community. The Lab hosted 3 artists in residence across diverse digital art disciplines from 3D art, and NFTs to Immersive Augmented and Virtual Realities.

As a result, 3 different forms of digital art have been explored at Nafasi this year through exhibitions and workshops held by the residents; including NonFungible Tokens (NFTs), 3 Dimensional Art, and Immersive art involving extended reality technologies, particularly Augmented and Mixed Realities.

3 Artists namely, Natasha Karungi (from Uganda), Kadallah Burrowes (from United States of America) and Damien McDuffie (from United States of America) had their residencies at Nafasi Digital Art Lab throughout different quarters of the year.

As a result of these residencies, two collaborative digital art showcases took place:

Damien McDuffie had a collaborative exhibition titled “Bringing Art to Life” which featured 14 artists from Tanzania mainland, Zanzibar and United States of America.

Kadallah Burrowes collaborated with 3 experts from OnaStories to facilitate a hybrid immersive exhibition titled “/əbˈstrakt/” an immersive exhibition that invited the audience to define what the word abstract means to them.

galleries & studios

The gallery and studios at Nafasi Art Space are an integral part of the Visual Art Department, with a primary focus on facilitating the growth and promotion of the arts. This includes providing and maintaining artist studios, managing online gallery platforms, overseeing gallery operations, facilitating art sales, and organizing exhibitions and open studios.

Nafasi offers working studios to artists on a rental basis. These studios are currently occupied by a variety of artists, including member artists, artists in residence, and artists participating in the Nafasi Academy programme. The studios offered come equipped with essential facilities, such as a working table and chair, a fan, as well as functioning lights and electrical outlets.

Within the first quarter, basic fixtures were added to 2 container studios i.e. fans and lighting to enable occupancy. These studios were used by artists in residence throughout the year and 1 previously unused container was renovated into a studio allocated for digital arts and currently occupied by a 3D member artist.

Due to the demand for more outdoor container studios, 1 container previously used as the art store was repurposed into a studio and 2 indoor studios were repurposed into storage for artworks and gallery equipment.

Nafasi offers three primary physical gallery spaces for the showcasing of visual arts. These encompass a spacious exhibition hall, a dedicated permanent gallery, and a smaller gallery specifically designed for the Nafasi Academy program and independent artist exhibitions. These areas predominantly serve for gallery displays, group exhibitions held within Nafasi, as well as open studios catering to artists in residence. The main gallery was painted (floors and display boards) for the TORRENTS group exhibition in June. The damaged boards from the permanent gallery were removed in preparation for maintenance work.

AIRs & Workshops

Nafasi's Artist in Residency program fosters critical learning and contemporary art creation in Tanzania, encouraging open exchange regionally and globally.

The Visual Arts department selected 8 local and international artists for the 2023 program, hailing from countries such USA, Uganda, and Kenya, aiming to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community. Postresidency, artists praised the program ' s role in their artistic pursuits, forming valuable connections.

However, challenges, including securing funds and resources, were noted. Overall, artists expressed genuine satisfaction, underscoring the residency's profound impact on their artistic journeys and a collective desire for extended engagement.

The AIRS and members facilitated workshops on digital art, sculpting, pottery, mapping, and photography, broadening the artistic horizons of our community.

These sessions served as catalysts for innovation and the expansion of artistic knowledge, allowing members to experiment with new mediums.

Collaborative efforts between Nafasi artists Barnabas Mnamba, Thobias Minzi, and George Nyandiche, alongside residence artists Damien MCduffie (USA), Kadallah Burrowes, and Kashushu (Uganda), explored the integration of their art with digital disciplines like VR/AR, NFTs, and other platforms.

The impacts of these workshops among members of the Nafasi community showcased their work and ignited curiosity and a sensr of artistic development.

Memberships

The Nafasi artist membership programme was mainly created for both performing and visual artists or art students who want to be part of the Nafasi community. The programme offers opportunities, resources, inclusive membership, working space, and professionalisation of sales income. The visual art department was tasked to track participation and payments of current visual art members for the year 2022/2023, all the while listening to artists' concerns as members of Nafasi Art Space. As of now, the visual arts department has a good number of active members and there has been notable improvement in the rapport between management and the artists.

Nafasi embarked on a quest for new community members in May 2023, prompted by the low membership count at the end of 2022, which stood at just 8 members (4 males and 4 females). By June, the initiative resulted in the selection of 11 new members for the visual arts general membership program. Among these, 3 were female and 8 were male. As a result, Nafasi currently boasts a total of 19 active visual arts members, with 7 being female and 12 being male. These artists have remained actively engaged throughout the year, demonstrating enthusiasm and a willingness to participate in various Nafasi activities. The response from the members has been overwhelmingly positive, with their active involvement contributing to the vibrancy of the community.

In an effort to enhance its services, Nafasi conducted a feedback survey among visual artist members to understand their needs and gather insights for program improvement. The survey, designed to elicit open and honest feedback, received anonymized responses. The key outputs include a call for program diversification, with members expressing enthusiasm for workshops and community outreach initiatives aligned with their interests. Additionally, there's a recognized opportunity to foster informal networking and collaboration among visual artist members through their involvement in Nafasi's major programs. Looking ahead, the survey emphasized the importance of incorporating member feedback into future planning sessions to ensure that upcoming initiatives align with and meet the expectations of the diverse and dynamic Nafasi community for 2024.

galleries & studios: digital platforms

Recently, Nafasi has started creating online tools and platforms to promote visual arts via the gallery. This project began with the construction of a gallery-specific Instagram profile, which was followed by the development of a website and mobile application for the gallery. These platforms function as a medium for online art exhibition and sales facilitation.

In order to enable a more effective method of managing the platforms, the beginning of 2023 involved working with local providers for technical support, including server hosting and an SMS gateway provider, as the majority of the app ' s development, including the UI/UX design and internal testing, was completed by the end of 2022 with the aim of public launch in 2024.

In addition, Nafasi was able to extend its collaboration with Google Arts & Culture this year. This online resource features high-quality photographs and videos of artwork and cultural items from partner cultural groups all around the world. Users of the site may virtually tour the galleries of partner institutions, investigate the physical and contextual details of artworks, create their own virtual collection, and exchange the tales and creations of other artists.

At the moment, Nafasi is concentrating on upgrading its material on the platform in order to increase visibility.

Google Arts & Culture has unveiled the Pocket Gallery, a fantastic virtual gallery tool that functions as a great platform for maintaining our shows online. This year, the Swahili Modalities Exhibition (from ZIFF 2023) may be seen in our online gallery via the Google Arts and Culture - Nafasi Art Space page.

exhibition highlights

Nafasi Art Space offers an engaging and dynamic core programme featuring solo and group exhibitions that explore important societal themes. These exhibitions are held quarterly with the intention of showcasing artists from diverse backgrounds and various visual art mediums.

To enhance the visibility and promotion of the visual arts, Nafasi has also made concerted efforts to explore partnerships with various cultural organisations, spaces, corporations, and other arts and culture platforms, such as festivals. These collaborations aim to facilitate the organisation or hosting of exhibitions outside of Nafasi.

For this year, Nafasi has been able to successfully host 8 exhibitions on its own and through partnerships from institutions and festivals such as the EU, Rangi Gallery, the Irish Embassy, and the World Bank.

Nafasi hosted several impactful exhibitions in 2023, including the Nafasi Academy 2022 Showcase (Feb), Torrents (June), Wikiendi Live Members Showcase (September) on its grounds, with other exhibitions outside the Nafasi grounds such as I See You You See Me (Feb) at Rangi Gallery, Swahili Modalities (June) at ZIFF in Zanzibar and Synergia (July) at JNICC.

Collaborating with partners, Nafasi presented I See You You See Me (Voices of Rights: A Youth Perspective on Human Rights (December) with the EU and Progressive Voices: 16 Days of Activism Against GBV (November) with the Irish Embassy.

These exhibitions not only showcased local and international artists but also contributed to increased diversity. The participating artists hailed from various countries, including Kenya, DRC, Rwanda, Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda, reflecting Nafasi's commitment to fostering a global dialogue through the medium of art.

Voices of Rights: A Youth Perspective on Human Rights

In honour of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Union, through Nafasi Art Space, organised a 20-day tan art competition for young people ages 12 to 25. The competition's primary goal was to ascertain their opinions and level of knowledge on human rights in Tanzania and throughout the globe. The contest took place between November 17, 2023, and December 6, 2023.

The enormous reaction demonstrated the younger generation's rich and complex knowledge. The artworks that are on display are concrete results of their commitment, imagination, and above all sincere reflection on the subject.

The last exhibition enticed viewers to set out on a voyage to investigate the complex aspects of human rights via the prism of Tanzania's youth. Using various mediums, the young artists expressed their interpretations of human rights, shedding light on issues often overlooked or silenced.

consultancy: new innovations...

Nafasi set started on an exciting journey in 2023, launching fresh projects to improve its sustainability in line with the 2026 goal. Although Nafasi has always relied considerably on consultation, this time there was a conscious attempt to broaden angles.

Partnership projects with TotalEnergies, the World Bank, the Irish Embassy, and the European Union were started, with the goal of developing and achieving the objectives that these organisations had established. These initiatives were successful, which was a big step in the right direction towards Nafasi's goal and vision.

Voices of Progress: 16 Days of Activism Against GBV

Spanning from November to December 2023, the Progressive Voices exhibition was a culmination of a unique artistic initiative. Renowned Irish artist Mick O'Dea, with the backing of the Irish Embassy in Tanzania, conducted a series of live portrait paintings in various art spaces across Dar es Salaam. 75 Years of the Declaration of Human Rights: An Art Competition

The European Union, through Nafasi Art Space, as part of commemorating 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, hosted a 20-day competition for youths between the ages of 12-25 on an art competition. The competition was held with the main aim of gauging their thoughts and understanding of Human Rights in Tanzania, and the world in general.

The competition ran from November 17 to December 6, 2023.

On December 2, Nafasi hosted a 3-hour children’s workshop with the main aim of getting children between 12 and 17 from different backgrounds to share their thoughts on Human Rights through the medium of art.

A total of 29 children attended this workshop which ran from 9 am to 12 noon. All the attendees filled out physical forms and submitted physical artworks which were then uploaded on the digital application form.

The winners were divided into two categories: three individuals aged between 12 and 17, and three from the 18 to 25 age bracket. This deliberate categorization aimed to foster a balanced acknowledgment of talent, embracing the creative contributions of both younger and older participants. A cash prise was presented to winners by the EU Ambassador to Tanzania, Christine Grau at an event that took place at Nafasi Art Space.

team nafasi

Within the culture of Nafasi Art Space, there is a clear understanding of the organization's dedication to equity with respect to its own interests as well as the well-being of its workforce. The encouraging of staff members to develop a genuine interest and sense of pride in the company and the important job it does is at the core of this acknowledgment. The ethos also encourages each team member to conscientiously use their best abilities and efforts to the completion of their assigned tasks..

A significant aspect of this organizational culture is the expectation for employees to actively engage in studying the regulations that govern their roles and the overall functioning of the organization. This investment in understanding the guidelines and expectations contributes to a shared understanding and a harmonious working environment.

It is emphasized that the acceptance of an employment offer is synonymous with an acknowledgment and acceptance of these established conditions. This collective commitment sets the foundation for a workplace where fairness, mutual respect, and dedication are valued principles, fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere at Nafasi Art Space.

Safeguarding Training

Nafasi embarked on a successful journey of undertaking the Prevention Against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEAH) training, during which the organization diligently developed tools and established systems for reporting incidents. This comprehensive effort also involved crafting a robust PSEAH policy and procedures to guide the appropriate course of action when incidents occur.

In a significant development, Nafasi Art Space seized the opportunity to be mentored for a duration of six months by the Resource Supporting Hub (RSH). During this mentorship, two key staff members, the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Manager and the Human Resources (HR) representative, actively participated in sessions addressing safeguarding issues and Prevention Against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Sexual Harassment (PSEAH).

Recognizing the importance of this initiative, the Swiss Embassy, our donor, identified it as a significant risk that a growing organization like Nafasi requires support and awareness on this matter. The period between July and September was dedicated to working on the Organizational Capacity Assessment (OCA) and updating the Policy and Code of Conduct to further fortify Nafasi's commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment for all its stakeholders.
