president's REPORT

“The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members”

Changing the lives of our participants for the better has been a credo for NADO through the years. The role we play in our community as a force in connecting everyone together is at the core of what we are and aim to be in the years to come.

Reflecting on my tenth year on the Board of NADO, there is a real sense of fulfillment on the objectives we set, to transform the company from a grant-based service provider to a dynamic, customer focused, purpose driven, sustainable business.

The Board has also transformed over that period, demonstrating its commitment to appropriate governance of the company, ensuring high standards of service provision, strong financial controls and a staff culture that develops and nurtures its people.

I am incredibly proud of how we treat our greatest asset, our people. In 2024 we received the “Employer of Choice” Business Award which acknowledges not only our skilled and experienced workforce but how valued they feel to be part of NADO.

None of this would be possible without the great support we receive from our business community, Councils and Local Members of Parliament who have helped us greatly through grants and attendance at our events.

As intimated in previous annual reports we have instituted a Disability Advisory Board to provide active input to the Board and the executive of Lived Experience with disability. I’d like to acknowledge and thank the Disability Advisory Board for their deep insights, their recommendations and thought provoking commentary that has resulted in policy and practice improvements.

I’m proud to say that the data and feedback we receive from the community demonstrates the health of NADO and its ability to evolve even further and in the years to come we will look to diversify into the Aged Care sector as we continue to build our community of support and service.

Making this all very real is our executive team led by Denise Heath and it is with great pleasure that I congratulate them on their leadership and commitment to our strategy of continuous improvement and growth.

I would lastly like to thank The Board of NADO 2024, Vanessa Griffin, Ray Dyer, Anil Puri, Samuel Arnold and Susan Rochester for their time, commitment and the individual specialisations that each person gives generously to support our Vision.

chief executive officer's REPORT

This year has been a time of national review and reflection about how people with disability have experienced their services, education, work and community life as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of the NDIS.

The Disability Royal Commission’s Final Report was handed to the Government in September 2023 and included 222 recommendations on how to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to ensure a more inclusive and just society that supports the independence of people with disability and their right to live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

On the 7 December 2023, the final report of the Independent 10-year Review of the NDIS was released, with many of the recommendations reflected in the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024.

The Bill foreshadowed some significant changes to the way people will access support from the NDIS, including a shift to some joint Commonwealth and State funded disability supports (Foundational Supports), a definitive list of what can be purchased under the scheme and changes in registration requirements.

All in all, the sector is undergoing some significant changes which I hope once implemented will bring an appropriate level of oversight, as well as more clarity about how participants engage with the NDIS.

For NADO, given we are not immune from increased business costs and cost of living pressures, our end of year profit of $1,210,483 which includes the recognition of Covid support funds continues to provide a healthy financial position that supports our service quality, our housing strategy and Share My Ability as a community hub.

Our focus on quality was paramount this year with our Quality of Life program rolling out, providing a deep dive audit of our Supported Independent Living houses and the lifestyle support of our residents.

The Disability Advisory Board has also continued to provide input to the Board, with great conversations and recommendations concerning topics that have influenced NADO’s housing strategy, our delivery of PersonCentred Active Support and the future of Foundational Supports.

In June 24, the membership reviewed its Charter and have broadened their membership for further recruitment in the coming year.

Additionally, on the advice of the Disability Advisory Board we implemented a new role of Inclusion Officer. Sitting outside of line management Liz O’Neill is able to bring a more nuanced understanding of individual concerns and group dynamics to management for greater understanding of any underlying issues. She has also undertaken projects to promote inclusion such as having the right to vote as well as external consultation on a community project that seeks to improve conditions for vulnerable people in Western Sydney’s hot climate.

As per our Housing Strategy, NADO purchased a beautiful 3-bedroom apartment in the heart of Penrith, where two young women now live happily and harmoniously. In terms of the changes, I have seen since the NDIS was introduced, the ability to provide modern housing that is

appropriate to the participant’s needs and their time of life preferences has made sweeping changes to the options available compared to 10 years ago.

Our executive team had some movement with the leaving of Ellen McFarlane in the Quality and Compliance role and Mark Heinz in the CFO role, both retiring from the hurly burly to enjoy their golden years. After an intensive search, we welcomed Marlon Generoso to the CFO role and Racheal Neal to the Quality and Compliance Manager role. Both roles are critical to NADO’s success, and we appreciate the skills and experience they bring to the team.

We also celebrated a unique milestone whereby both Robb McGowen and I have now both held the position of CEO at NADO for 19 years. Whilst we had different challenges and opportunities, our common focus has always been on building a community around NADO that supports people with disability, their families and carers.

I’d like to thank the executive team, Brooke Wilkie, Julia Tierney, Deborah Ferriera, Linda Wilson, Marlon and Racheal for their tireless work and dedication. Equally, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the 260+ strong NADO team who continue to work tirelessly providing the support our participants need to live a good life.

I’d also like to thank the Board of Directors, who bring their professional skills to NADO, offering relevant, high level strategic support and guidance that continues to build a great organisation.

NADO could not do what it does without the investment of time and resources from our community of supporters, including our Friends of NADO, our event sponsors and the pro bono professional support that has been extended to us. I would genuinely like to thank everyone who joins our Vision of Changing Lives through Connected Communities.

treasurer's REPORT

NADO experienced solid financial growth in 2023/24, with total income rising by 5.6% to $22,872,881, resulting in a healthy surplus of $1,210,483 (up from $1,097,937 in FY2023).

I am pleased to report that, despite rising operational costs and increased competition, NADO has upheld its financial stability and growth trajectory, allowing us to provide quality services to people with disabilities across our community.

Financial Performance

In the 2023/24 financial year, NADO achieved a total income of $22,872,881, reflecting our consistent growth and dedication to meeting community needs. While income growth slowed slightly due to competitive pressures, our strong brand, effective marketing, and the team’s dedication to quality service have underpinned our progress.

Our annual surplus of $1,210,483 reflects a strong result, bolstered by the final recognition of COVID support funds from previous years. The result includes a substantial provision for anticipated costs associated with enhancing our IT and communications infrastructure - an investment that will

ensure our systems robustly support an efficient, quality service.

Our solid financial position provides us with the resources to further our mission, reinvest in essential services, enhance infrastructure, and continue delivering reliable, sustainable, highquality support.

Navigating Competitive and Cost Pressures

Achieving this result has not been without challenges. While services have rebounded from past COVIDrelated disruptions, we faced aggressive competitor tactics in our accommodation sector, temporarily impacting occupancy and profitability. This emphasised the need for a thorough review of management structures and staffing across NADO to ensure efficient cost management without sacrificing service quality.

While these competitive pressures have eased since, the review prompted beneficial changes in staffing and cost management practices, creating a

stronger foundation for future success. The management team should be commended for undertaking this review in a focused and professional way.

Cash, Assets and Future Outlook

While our cash balances decreased due to strategic property investmentsincluding a new 3-bedroom apartment in Penrith and renovations at our Colyton house - our overall financial health remains robust. Our cash position meets best-practice levels to buffer against future uncertainties, and our property portfolio increased by $1.2 million, further strengthening our net asset position.

Looking ahead, we are committed to a balanced approach of cost control, workforce efficiency, and quality enhancement. Our investment in marketing, systems improvements, and team training and development positions NADO to remain agile, competitive, and well-prepared for evolving participant needs.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank our Board, Executive Team, and every NADO staff member for their dedication and contributions to our mission. Special thanks go to Mark Heinz, our previous CFO who retired in September, and to Marlon Generoso, who has stepped

into this role with energy and valuable new insights.

As we look to the future, NADO will continue its focus on strategic growth, service excellence, and meaningful community impact, supported by our solid financial foundation. NADO remains well-positioned to adapt, innovate, and positively impact the lives of people with disabilities in our community.

NADO had once again improved its overall financial position despite the current challenges in the industry. It remains strong with an overall net asset position of $9.8 million.

NADO continues to invest in the ongoing growth of the organisation with the acquisition and building of new properties for our accommodation services.

Management have also been continuously working on measures to further strengthen NADO’s net current asset positions and operating cashflow. The organisation’s fleet and properties also had dramatic efficiencies this year which not only positively affected the company’s finances but also overall staff and participant morale.

Reporting requirements and deadlines have all been met with big thanks to our dedicated team namely: Brigitte Sirocic, Glen Robertson, Lisa Devery, Bhaumika Patel, and Paulina Wilson.

I would also like to thank our CEO Denise, the Executive Team, Anil our Treasurer, and the rest of our Board members for their continued support.

The Board will begin another process of chartering future strategy for NADO which will no doubt put our organisation in an even better position in the future.

service delivery REPORT

As the General Manager of Operations, I am pleased to be able to provide you with a reflection of our collective achievements and growth over the past year. We take pride in showcasing the exceptional leadership and management strides we've made. Our focus on nurturing talent, advancing succession planning, and delivering quality support services has been at the heart of our success. This report is not just a summary of our accomplishments but a testament to the dedication and hard work of every individual in our team.

At our core, we know that supportive leadership is critical to team cohesion. Our focus on succession planning, means making sure our team members aren’t just trained, but truly empowered with the skills they need to lead teams and achieve participant goals. We offer our staff opportunities to take on higherlevel roles temporarily, giving them valuable experience, and giving us depth and a ready pool to draw from when needed.

Under Sharon Morrison’s leadership, our Support Coordination services have truly elevated the quality of care and support we offer. Sharon and her team show incredible dedication and commitment to ensuring the best outcomes possible for their participants.

Our Supported Independent Living (SIL) program is thriving under the leadership of Vanessa Vella-Adams who together with her team manage the diverse needs and expectations of people we support. With a focus on fostering independence through the practice of Person Centred Active Support, we continuously aim to help individuals achieve their personal goals.

I’d like to thank Brendan Oldman, Community Programs Manager for providing leadership to our Day Programs, Individual and Group Recreation Programs, Children’s Programs and Share My Ability. With such a diverse range of service needs, Brendan was ably supported by an experienced team of coordinators who together ensured that participants were provided with the right support to help them reach their goals.

I’d also like to thank Vanessa Santucci, who has the ability, reliability and flexibility to adapt to evolving expectations, including playing a key role in the Plan Management Team and Sensory Store. She is often seen assisting at various expos and events providing useful information to the community about NADO services.

With growth in our services, the need to centralise our rostering system was necessary to have oversight of staffing and improve efficiencies. Rostering Coordinator Jessica Spiteri has introduced important strategies that take into account staffing availabilities, their skills and their learning needs. Jessica has implemented new systems and processes to track hours worked and predict staffing needs based on historical data, encouraging employees to take scheduled breaks to avoid burnout and improve their well-being. She is providing opportunities for cross training employees to perform multiple roles, allowing more flexibility in scheduling and reducing the need for additional recruitment. By focusing on these and other strategies Jessica has effectively minimised expenditure while maintaining operational efficiency and staff satisfaction.

This year we launched the Jamisontown Day Program at Share My Ability which caters specifically to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and higher support needs. Combining a well-resourced activity centre together with a professionally created Sensory Room, this program has been instrumental in creating a nurturing environment where participants can engage in individualised meaningful activities while receiving the support they require. Operating three days a week, the program has been warmly embraced by participants, carers, and families alike, making a significant positive impact on everyone involved.

We have successfully commenced the Quality-of-Life Framework, designed to ensure that people living in SIL Accommodation are enjoying the quality of life they deserve, ensuring that their needs and aspirations are at the forefront of our service delivery.

As we look forward to the upcoming year, our focus remains on enhancing leadership and management practices, expanding training programs, and ensuring that our services align with the highest standards of quality and care.

I would like to recognise the dedication and commitment of all NADO’s employees for their amazing contribution to the organisation.

I would also like to thank the participants, families and carers for your trust in our continued work. Collectively it is through your loyalty and commitment that we can together provide a stable support network for the people we support.

accommodation REPORT Vanessa

NADO remains committed to empowering participants to lead more independent and fulfilling lives through our Supported Independent Living (SIL) accommodation and short-term accommodation (STA) options for individuals with disability. We strive to deliver high-quality support services tailored to each person's unique needs and goals.

Our dedicated team works closely with participants to create personalised plans that foster independence, enhance skills, and promote community involvement. By focusing on individual strengths and aspirations, we aim to help everyone reach their full potential while enjoying a supportive and inclusive environment.

STA St Marys, affectionately known as The Cottage, sadly closed its doors in April 2024 after 20 years of dedicated service to our local community. During its time, The Cottage provided vital respite and shortterm accommodation for countless individuals living with disability, along with their carers and families. The property itself no longer met the current standards of accessibility and despite efforts to improve its liveability, we felt that we were able to provide a better experience for our customers at our Blue Mountains STA. Although the closure marked the end of an era, we carry with us memories

of the participants and families we had the privilege to support.

Our STA service continues to grow, offering vital respite to many individuals living with disabilities, along with their families and carers. Designed to be a home away from home, STA maintains participants' routines and daily living activities as much as possible. Our beautiful home in Winmalee has also provided much-needed medium-term and SIL accommodation for participants when housing options have been exhausted or when carers can no longer provide essential supports. STA serves as a crucial steppingstone for some participants aspiring to transition to SIL accommodation, while also delivering respite.

As one chapter ends, another begins with the opening of a Glenmore Park home in October 2023, giving three residents a safe place to call home. All three residents throughout 2023 had lived together at STA St Marys. This enabled them to foster a relationship and therefore deciding that they would like to live together in their own home.

Another home opened its doors in July 2023, providing a beautiful home for one resident. He quickly settled in, and in January, he welcomed another resident as his new housemate. Since then, they have been residing together, creating a supportive and stable living environment.

In January 2024, NADO proudly welcomed another new SIL house by purchasing a stunning apartment in Penrith. By March, this beautiful space had become home to two young ladies who decided to embark on this journey together. As they settled in, their shared living arrangement blossomed into a wonderful friendship. They transformed the apartment into a warm and inviting home, making memories and increasing their independence and love for social activities.

NADO continues to support 38 participants residing in SIL accommodation across 12 houses. Our focus is on providing personalised supports that promote independence

and enhance the quality of life for each individual. SIL accommodation is an essential service, fostering a sense of community and empowering residents to live fulfilling lives. We are committed to helping each participant thrive in their own unique way.

Accommodation (SIL/STA) has a special place in my heart and without a supportive team behind me it wouldn’t be possible to provide the supports and opportunities to each individual within SIL and STA.

I would like to thank the staff who work on the ground with our participants day in and day out providing supports and opportunities. Your dedication throughout challenges and successes is truly commendable.

A special thank you to the leadership team for your commitment, resilience and adaptability to changes makes you all nothing short of exceptional, and I truly enjoy working alongside you all.

A big thank you to the Accommodation Coordinators Kylie Loadsman, Aga Rogoz, Yusdi Maksum and Donna Newton.

And to each team leader, Karen Daly, Victor Santos, Tracy Shelton, Krystal McGauley, Cherrie Ryan, Tina Carroll, Zane Blake, Riana Stevens, Sally Hill, Janelle Butfield, Katie McMaster, Dannielle Merritt, Sarah Hamilton, Michelle Edwards, Josh Banayad and Deepak Saxena – thank you for your exceptional work ethic.

I look forward to working with you all and continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of our participants. Together, we can build an even brighter future and create more opportunities for growth and connection. Let’s keep inspiring each other!

community programs

Our St Mary’s Day Program incorporates a dance group that proudly performed a mid-year concert for their family, friends and carers this year. This program runs every Thursday with an external dance studio. St Mary’s continues to provide programs that nurtures and grows the skills of our participants. With Carey Tidyman Coordinating and Rehana Buksh as the Team Leader the program continues to be a success with the participants.

Our Penrith Central Day Program is also Coordinated by Carey with the assistance of acting Team Leader Lucia Sleiman. This program is a fun and funky program targeted to younger participants with interests in gaming, computers, art and being out in the community. The current Team Leader Harmony Lebans welcomed a baby in November 2023 and we look forward to her return in 2024/25.

New to 2024 was our Jamisontown Day Program (JDP) which is run from our Share My Ability Centre, JDP provides 1:1 individualised Day Program supports for participants aged 17 years and up, JDP provides a transitional program for school leavers and provides higher intensity supports for participants who may have difficulty being in a larger group program. JDP currently has 4 participants and is growing.

Our Riverside program continues to work hard on providing a program tailored to each individual. Riverside is currently running a weekly Thursday walking Program with one of the participants Dallas recently getting up to a 5k walk. Riverside is Coordinatored by Tina Khalifeh, with the assistance of two Team Leaders Cherry Silverio and Adrian Leonardo.

With the support of NADO staff, Lexi who attends our Lawson Day Program held her first market stall, selling her artwork and creating her own small business.

NADO Social Club (NSC) remains popular with our participants as they continue to book in for fun and exciting activities. Our Social Club offers social dinners, social bowling and community activities that allow participants to expand their social network and make friends. NSC has been running for over 40 years and is an imperative service to people with a disability in our local community.

Our Saturday Flexi Groups provide group social outing allowing participants to be out in the community, exploring new communities and being with friends. Thank you to Rebecca Smale who has been creative and innovative with her programming to ensure that each NSC and Flexi Group activity is an enjoyable and fun experience.

Team You continues to be popular for people looking for more individualised support. Kurt Tucsok joined Team You in 2023 replacing Anabelle Wells who moved into a Support Coordinators role. Jackie Long and Meg Hayes along with Kurt Tucsok continued to work hard with supporting our staff and participants. Recently in June we said farewell to Meg and we welcomed Lajorda Ah Chong to the Team You team.

Our Children’s Program continues to be a popular program with the school holiday programs on most days being fully booked for the activities. The children enjoy the action-packed program with lots of fun things to do. The Children’s program could not be a success without the Coordination of Kurt Tucsok and Team Leader Annemarie Cantrell. Our staff who work in this program are skilled and provide excellent quality of service across all programs in children’s services. Recently in June we said farewell to Milissa.

NADO continues to invest in our team providing professional development opportunities and the focus on growing our staff within. NADO has provided in 2023/24 Tafe courses to upskill our staff. Currently running is the Cert IV in Leadership and Management and Cert III in Individual Supports.

A heartfelt thank you to the leadership team and all staff involved in Community Programs. Your expertise, dedication, and support are crucial to the success of our programs and to ensuring participants receive the best possible care within the Person-Centred Active Support model. As we look forward to the coming year, we remain dedicated to enhancing our programs and services to better meet the needs of our community. Thank you for your continued commitment and hard work.

support coordination REPORT

SUPPORT COORDINATION, TEAM LEADER

As we reflect on the past year 2023/24, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the exceptional work each member of the NADO Support Coordination team has accomplished. Your dedication and commitment have been pivotal in ensuring our participants receive the support they deserve, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge your outstanding efforts.

This year, we have seen a notable increase in referrals from various organisations, including LAC, NDIS planners, Life Start, DCJ, and even through word of mouth. This surge is a testament to the trust and confidence our stakeholders, participants, and their families place in us.

The past year has brought many changes within the NDIS landscape, including funding cuts and discussions around the evolving role of support coordination. These developments have undoubtedly raised concerns for all of us. Despite the uncertainty, I am truly inspired by the way our Support Coordination team has risen to these challenges and excelled in advocating for the rights and well-being of our participants. Their efforts in supporting participants, particularly when their needs are not being met due to NDIS funding decisions, have been exceptional.

Their thoroughness in gathering and updating documentation along with their determination in navigating the S100 process and, in some cases, the AAT process, exemplify our core values.

The move back to the NADO head office in St Marys from our site in Lemongrove has been a significant boost to team morale, and it’s wonderful to be back among our colleagues.

We've seen some changes within the team this year. Bianca's decision to move to QLD after her maternity leave has been a notable shift. While she is sorely missed, we wish her all the best in her new chapter. Lydia, who stepped in as Bianca’s acting replacement, successfully applied for the full-time role and has seamlessly integrated into the team. Riana, who decided to return to Support Work to follow her passion, is also missed but

continues to pop in to say hello. We were fortunate to welcome Anabelle from the NADO Team You team, who applied for the full-time position and was successful. Anabelle transitioned over from Team You and has brought much joy, laughter and not to mention endless food to the office.

As we look ahead to the coming year, I am filled with anticipation for what we will collectively achieve.

Our participants continue to inspire us with their determination, and I am confident that, with the support of this remarkable team, our participants will achieve even more milestones and goals.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each member of the Support Coordination team - old and new: Bianca Hearnden, Jess Burnic, Alex Stevens, Riana Stevens, Marlin (Spencer) Nau, Lydia Ho, and Anabelle Wells. Your dedication, compassion, and relentless commitment to our participants are the driving force behind our success. Let’s continue to make a positive impact and empower those we support to achieve their dreams.

Here's to a year filled with growth, achievements, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

plan management REPORT

It has been a busy time for our Plan Management team with our caseload seeing a 30% increase since the last financial year.

Due to the growth in NADO’s Plan Management portfolio we were excited to announce our new business name– Peasy Plan Management. Peasy is a stand alone brand which focuses on “making things easy” for NDIS Plan Managed Participants.

The great thing about Peasy is that there was no change of personnel and NADO remained our participants’ registered provider, so our services continued as usual.

Careview, which is an app that allows Participants to easily view their funding and track their NDIS budgets, is now in its second year. The feedback we have received from our participants, their carers and support coordinators suggest they continue to be impressed with the ease and transparency of the platform, and their easy to access funding summaries.

February 2024 saw the full rollout of NDIS’ new customer relationship management system, PACE.

PACE and the new “My NDIS provider portal” is designed to be more userfriendly and make it easier for NDIA staff, partners and providers to do their job, which in turn provides us more time to deliver a quality experience to our participants.

Staff changes on our team have seen the departure of one of our amazing job-sharing team members, Melissa Graham. Melissa completed her university degree and left to pursue her career in behavioural therapy, we thank her for being a valuable member of our team.

I would like to thank Bhaumika Patel, Paulina Wilson and Melissa Graham for their tireless efforts in our plan management team, their wealth of knowledge and expertise paves the way for the exemplary service Peasy continues to deliver.

marketing REPORT

This year Marketing undertook various initiatives aimed at increasing brand visibility, promoting NADO’s diverse services, and driving engagement across our local communities across Nepean and Blue Mountains. Through a combination of print and digital marketing, community events, and partnerships, we continue to successfully reinforce NADO’s commitment to providing exceptional services.

The marketing strategies this year were centred around the following key objectives:

Increase Awareness: Enhance visibility for NADO Disability Services, its sub brands and its key NDIS service offerings.

Participant Engagement: Boost participation and engagement in our events and services.

Promote Inclusion: Highlight the value of inclusion through targeted campaigns and community-based activities.

Support Growth: Drive overall service growth through digital and offline marketing efforts, specifically for our new initiatives and events.

In February 2024, we introduced Peasy Plan Management, a new brand designed to make NDIS Plan Management simple, easy, and stressfree. The idea behind Peasy Plan Management was born from the need to remove the complexity that many people face when managing their NDIS plans.

This year also saw the reskin of the Sensory Store website, part of our ongoing effort to enhance the user experience. The updated design makes navigation easier, creating a seamless customer journey from product selection to checkout.

It has been another exciting year for Share My Ability, our sensory activity centre, which continues to grow and expand its offerings. One of the highlights of the year was the launch of our new Intergenerational Program, bringing together the young and the young-at-heart in a beautiful blend of connection and learning. Thanks to Wentworth Healthcare for providing this opportunity.

We also launched a day program within Share My Ability that is designed to support younger NDIS participants transitioning from the school environment into the next stage of their lives. This new offering provides a safe, engaging space for personal development and skillbuilding. We were thrilled to receive a range of new interactive equipment for the centre, thanks to the NSW Stronger Community Grant. These new additions have enriched the sensory experience for all our participants, extending enjoyment, learning and engagement within the centre.

Our annual Participant Photoshoot was another big success this year. Not only did we capture the unique personalities of our participants, but we also had the chance to collaborate with local businesses, including Holy Moley and X-Golf Penrith. These partnerships enhanced the experience, providing creative backdrops and fun activities that made the photoshoot truly memorable. The photos continue to serve as a visual representation of the vibrant and inclusive community that NADO Disability Services fosters.

At NADO Disability Services, our NDIS participants inspire everything we do. Through our marketing efforts, we proudly showcase their incredible achievements while promoting a culture of inclusivity and empowerment. By organizing community-driven events like the NADO Fun Day, Sensory Santa, Caring For Carers, and our Annual Golf Charity Day, we have the opportunity to give back to the community and create meaningful, supportive experiences for all.

This year we were proud to have achieved significant success in promoting our range of programs and services through targeted and creative marketing strategies. Our marketing initiatives contributed to increased brand awareness, stronger community connections, and growth in service participation.

As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited to build on this momentum, continuing to showcase NADO’s commitment to inclusion and service excellence, whilst evolving and adapting to the changing landscape.

community engagement and sponsorship REPORT

Community Engagement and Sponsorship’s main focus is building relationships with businesses, local leaders and the community as well as promoting our services through events.

Looking back over the 2023/24 event schedule, it was a jam-packed year. We don’t often get the chance to reflect on what we have achieved as we finish one event and move onto the next. Preparing for the annual report is a task that I enjoy as it gives me the opportunity to reflect on what we have done and achieved throughout the year.

Our Annual Leadership Conference held in July 2023 had approximately 50 Leaders ranging from our Executive Team, Coordinators and Team Leaders in attendance.

Michael Ekerts from Kinetik facilitated topic discussions such as Inclusive Leadership, Generational Leadership, Adaptability and Self Discovery. Topics covered on the day provided pivotal learnings to help with professional development for each of our Leaders.

Our Annual Staff Conference followed in August with over 180 of our employees, giving the Executive Team the opportunity to update staff on what we have achieved the previous year and future plans going forward. The afternoon was finished off with some magic by Brendan Mon Tanner – Magician who entertained and thrilled us all.

Both meetings are a great opportunity for staff to get together while learning and acknowledging their achievements, as well as that of their peers.

On top of the Sydney Disability Expo held in August 2023 in Homebush where we promoted Sensory Store and Share My Ability along with NADO Disability Services, we attended numerous mini expos’ including inhouse school expo’s giving our staff the opportunity to provide local parents with updated information on the growing services we offer through NADO Disability Services, Share My Ability, Sensory Store and Peasy Plan Management.

Our Katoomba and Lawson Day Programs hosted a stand at the Magpie Market in October and November. Here we promoted our services within the Blue Mountains as well as providing an opportunity for one of our participants the chance to sell her handmade crafts. Selling her products at a local store gave Lexi the customer/selling experience to continue her passion.

The end of 2023 saw us host our second Friends of NADO Caring for Carers event and Sensory Santa. Both events have now been cemented into our annual calendar with ongoing support from our Friends of NADO partners, Penrith City Council, Penrith RSL, CarersNSW and St Mary Rugby League Club.

In March 2024, we held our Friends of NADO Charity Golf Day at Lynwood Golf and Country Club. This event continues to be the highlight of our fundraising calendar. It’s fantastic to see familiar faces coming back each year, as well as welcoming new ones. It’s an honour to organise such an event and the support we receive each year is amazing. The funds raised at this year’s event exceeded our expectations with us raising over $83,000.

Grants received over the 2023/24 FY totaled just over $95,000 with thanks going to Penrith RSL, Penrith City Council, Carers NSW, St Marys Rugby Leagues Club, Wentworth Area Health, Stronger Communities Grant and the Blue Mountains City Council. We were also fortunate enough to have received donations of around $21,000 with thanks to Reozone, Penrith CBD Corporation and Sydney Brick Show.

I would like to thank Brooke Wilkie, Carey Tidyman, Jacki Long, Vanessa Santucci, Christine Samoluk, Spenser Nau, Zane Blake, Glen Robertson, Yusdi Maksum, Kurk Tucsok, Kylie Loadsman and Brent Jenkins who have helped out over the year at various events including Sydney Disability Expo, Friends of NADO Caring for Carers event, Sensory Santa and Friends of NADO Charity Golf Day, as well as Anthony Currall, Cameron Cook and Maryanne O’Reilly who also helped out at this year’s Friends of NADO Charity Golf Day. These events could not run smoothly without your help on the day.

A heartfelt thank you to all our supporters and donors! Your generosity makes a real difference, and we truly appreciate every contribution. Your ongoing support fuels our mission and inspires us every day. Thank you for standing by us!

quality assurance and compliance REPORT

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND COMPLIANCE

As we reflect on the 2023/24 year, the role of the Quality Assurance and Compliance Manager at NADO Disability Services has been a busy one ensuring our commitment to excellence in care for our participants.

The Quality Assurance and Compliance Manager is responsible for several critical areas. These include evaluating the quality-of-service delivery against established standards, evaluating feedback mechanisms to gather insights from participants, and leading continuous improvement efforts to enhance overall service quality. Additionally, the role ensures compliance with regulators, coordination of audits, and updating policies and procedures to reflect regulatory and operational changes.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role involves the interpretation of intricate frameworks and their subsequent translation into practical, everyday processes.

An example of this is the Quality of Life (QoL) Framework designed to assess and enhance the overall well-being of individuals, focusing on various domains that collectively define a person's quality of life. These domains typically include physical health, emotional well-being, social

relationships, and environmental factors. By evaluating these areas, the framework aims to identify strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring that services and support are tailored to enhance the individual's overall life satisfaction and functional independence.

Central to the QoL Framework is its alignment with human rights principles. This approach recognises that every individual has inherent rights to dignity, equality, and participation in society. The framework ensures that interventions respect these rights by promoting autonomy, preventing discrimination, and advocating for equitable access to resources and opportunities. By integrating human rights into the QoL Framework, NADO can uphold ethical standards and create environments that support the fundamental rights of those they serve.

NADO have ensured that the QoL Framework is closely linked to internal processes aimed at delivering person-

centred care. It guides the development and evaluation of services by aligning them with both the identified quality of life domains and human rights principles, in addition to the goals and aspirations of our participants. NADO utilise this framework to refine its practices, ensure compliance with best practices, and continuously improve the quality of support provided. This holistic approach ensures that NADO's services are not only effective but also respectful and responsive to the diverse needs of the participants we support.

The role of Quality Assurance and Compliance Manager has been crucial in upholding the values and standards of NADO Disability Services. The past year has seen significant progress in quality improvement, compliance management, and staff development. As we move into 2024/2025, we remain committed to advancing our practices, embracing new technologies, and ensuring the highest level of service for our participants.

I am honoured to be part of the dedicated team at NADO Disability Services, to work with a committed and like-minded team working towards making meaningful strides in our mission to provide exceptional care and support to individuals with disabilities.

sensory store REPORT

One of the significant benefits of sensory products is their ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress. At the Sensory Store, our dedicated team continuously strives to offer a diverse range of products that encourage learning through sensory exploration, problem-solving, and creativity for people of all ages.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the Sensory Store, in collaboration with NADO, places great importance on giving back to the community. This year, we proudly supported Western Sydney Youth, an organisation dedicated to working with disadvantaged, marginalised, homeless, and at-risk youth, by providing them with a variety of age-appropriate sensory products in celebration of their Youth Week Event.

Additionally, we were thrilled to meet Gabi, a parent representative from Clairgate Public School's P&C, to whom we donated a Sensory Gift Pack for their Annual Christmas Raffle.

Now in our sixth year of operation, 2023 marked an exciting milestone for the Sensory Store with the launch of our new-look website in June. The redesigned site boasts a modern and cleaner interface, along with an improved customer journey, making it easier than ever for users to find and purchase our products.

Engaging with our community is something we’re passionate about. This year, the Sensory Store team attended several events, extending our networks and connecting with likeminded organisations.

Our retail outlets and online store have experienced another year of exceptional growth, with sales increasing by an impressive 65%. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of our staff – proving that "teamwork makes the dream work."

As we move forward, the Sensory Store has exciting plans for the future, including:

• Expanding our network with schools and educational departments to help integrate sensory play into learning environments.

• Collaborating with Allied Health practitioners to identify products that support a variety of therapeutic goals.

• Developing themed sensory product bundles for holidays and specific seasons, such as back-to-school kits, holiday gift packs, and Halloween-themed items.

• The Sensory Store continues to make a positive impact in the community, showing steady growth while staying true to our focus of fostering creativity and supporting individuals through sensory exploration.

share my ability

A Year of Growth, Connection and Innovation

This year has been a standout for Share My Ability, filled with new programs, community engagement, and exciting upgrades. We proudly launched our first-ever "Connect and Create" Intergenerational Program, designed to bring together the young and the young at heart. Through this initiative, seniors had the rewarding opportunity to share their life experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with younger generations. The program is supported by Wentworth Healthcare and has fostered meaningful connections in a warm, open environment where participants of all ages feel valued and heard.

This year also saw the introduction of the Jamisontown Day Program (JDP), offering a fresh and unique experience for young adults and mature-aged NDIS participants. Along with access to all of our interactive and accessible equipment, JDP participants enjoy a variety of internal and out-of-centre activities such as art, music, dancing, drama, fitness, cooking, outdoor recreation, and festivals.

These programs are designed to support personal development and growth, focusing on essential skills such as communication, everyday living, forming new friendships, and increasing independence.

In addition to new programming, we were fortunate to install new interactive equipment through the NSW Stronger Communities Grant. This exciting upgrade includes a full-sized Jungle Activity Wall and two interactive touchscreen gaming panels, designed to enhance our participants' sensory experiences.

We are incredibly grateful to Melissa McIntosh MP, Federal Member for Lindsay, for her support in securing this grant, which allows us to offer even more engaging, interactive activities to the community.

Our popular school holiday programs continued to be a highlight of each term, focusing on both fun and learning in a safe, supportive setting. These programs are specially crafted to encourage the development of fine and gross motor skills, creative problemsolving, and sensory exploration.

Through activities like these, we aim to provide children with the opportunity to not only develop new skills but also make lasting friendships in an inclusive, encouraging environment.

We’re also expanding our offerings to include more school excursions, special events, party packages, and multipass options for the local community.

We look forward to another fantastic Sensory Santa event this Christmas, creating a joyful, sensory-friendly holiday experience for everyone.

disability advisory board

In 2023/24 the Disability Advisory Board (Advisory Board), comprised of Marie Butler-Cole, Kath Attree, Natalie Jackson, Simon Jaeger and Anthony Mulholland, held three meetings including one meeting to review the Disability Advisory Board Charter.

In August 2023, the Advisory Board reviewed NADO’s Quality of Life Framework, asking how do we know if the residents living in NADO managed group homes have a good quality of life?

At the meeting, views were discussed about a range of considerations, including staffing, safety, and accountability so that people supported in shared living feel a sense of freedom, safety and comfort, that the house looks homely - not clinical,

with personal items of residents evident with a nice balance between common and private space. Further, that NADO managed properties had easy access to public transport, shops and services.

In April 2024, the Advisory Board reviewed NADO’s Participant Money and Property Policy and discussed how NADO could contribute toward the proposed Foundational Supports structure.

It was discussed that NADO could be in a good position to provide or facilitate;

• Support groups for families to help find solutions to everyday problems and build connections

• Provide information to families who are new entrants to the NDIS as there is very little support and information available

• Provide education sessions to families on disability related topics eg autism

• Support participants with information to help them manage their own plans as adults

The Board have listened to these suggestions and aims to implement information sessions to improve community connections.

In May 2024 the Advisory Board reviewed their Charter and agreed to new provisions about increasing the membership as well as alternating face to face meetings with on-line meetings.

The Disability Advisory Board continues to be a fantastic resource to NADO’s Board, supporting the organisation to reflect on its practice with the wisdom that comes from first-hand experience of disability.

program and stories

new day program launches in Jamisontown

Jamisontown Day Program

March 2024 we were thrilled to announce the launch of our new Jamisontown Day Program located at Share My Ability, our Sensory Activity Centre in Penrith. This fully accessible program promises to be a hub of engagement and enrichment for participants.

At the heart of the Jamisontown Day Program are the exceptional features of Share My Ability, including interactive equipment, a liberty wheelchair swing, an inflatable bag jump, food preparation facilities, a calming sensory room, and advanced gaming technology. These amenities will provide a stimulating and supportive environment tailored to individual needs.

In addition to on-site activities, participants will enjoy a diverse range of off-site experiences such as art, music, dancing, drama, fitness, cooking, and outdoor recreation. These activities are designed to build life skills, support NDIS goals, and strengthen connections to the local community.

NADO is dedicated to enhancing mental health and well-being through our Community Day Programs. Our tailored programs address both physical and intellectual disabilities, aiming to foster new experiences, skill development, and increased independence.

We are excited to offer this opportunity for individuals to meet new friends, boost their self-esteem, and enjoy their time as valued members of the community.

connect & create

Intergenerational Program

At NADO Disability Services, we take great pride in being a leading advocate for inclusion and community enrichment. This year, we were excited to partner with Wentworth Healthcare to launch an innovative Intergenerational Program across the Nepean Blue Mountains region.

Commissioned by Wentworth Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, this initiative is a direct response to the Australian Government’s Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Through this program, we aim to foster meaningful connections between different generations, enhancing both the quality of life for seniors and the well-being of younger participants.

We look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will bring to our community, strengthening bonds and creating new opportunities for engagement and mutual support.

Wentworth Healthcare CEO, Lizz Reay, said an emerging issue across NSW is that older people are prematurely accessing Residential Aged Care.

“One contributing factor may be that older people’s physical and mental health is declining earlier than expected due to a lack of meaningful connections and activities designed to keep them healthier for longer. Intergenerational programs

are a new and innovative style of care, that has been shown to improve social connections and physical health outcomes for older people, and we are proud to be able to fund these types of programs in our region” she said.

In an era where bridging generational gaps is more crucial than ever, NADO Disability Services is proud to offer the "Connect & Create" Intergenerational Program. This initiative is designed to foster meaningful connections and create a vibrant community where the wisdom of seniors and the energy of young children converge.

The program brings together seniors aged 65+ and preschool children aged 3–5 through engaging group-based activities. These interactions are not only enriching for the participants but also instil a sense of purpose and pride. Seniors have not only connected with the younger generation but have also formed new friendships and social opportunities within the group.

Through "Connect & Create," we are building a community where

generations come together, learn from each other, and contribute to a richer, more connected society.

Denise Heath, CEO of NADO Disability Services stated “The Connect & Create Program seeks to break down barriers and create a sense of unity within our community. By bringing together participants from different age brackets, we aim to harness the unique strengths and perspectives of each generation, promoting a sense of happiness and belonging.”

Preschoolers from the Penrith City Council’s Jamisontown Children’s Centre have also flourished throughout the program with centre Director Leanne Ashcroft commenting, “They were shy in the beginning but now they are more confident and comfortable, even asking them for help when they need it”.

The success of the "Connect & Create" Intergenerational Program has been remarkable. Due to its positive impact, Wentworth Healthcare has engaged NADO Disability Services to host two additional groups, set to begin in October 2024 and February 2025.

We are excited to expand this initiative and continue fostering meaningful connections between generations, enriching our community further.

client inclusion

CLIENT INCLUSION OFFICER

The Client Inclusion Officer role started in October 2023 with the aim to provide an alternative avenue to report directly to management for Supported Independent Living (SIL) participants. This has provided participants the opportunity to give feedback, lodge a complaint or discuss any personal or interpersonal issues they might be experiencing. There are several examples of this service contributing to the improvement of the mental health and wellbeing of participants.

The first year has included regular visits to SIL residences to get to know the residents. There have been several projects undertaken, including Personal Finances, Voting Rights, and Climate Resilience in conjunction with the Red Cross. The role has also comprised of supporting members who serve on the Disability Advisory Board.

There are some exciting projects within the Client Inclusion area for the next year. They include providing workshops and information sessions that provide information to people with a disability and their families about the NDIS and identifying areas where NADO can be advised of opportunities to improve upon Person Centered Active Support in SIL homes.

Client Inclusion Success Story

A participant I came to know through regular visits to his group home, talked to me about issues that were affecting his life. He was depressed and anxious and feeling that his life was heading toward living in a nursing home. He was suffering from severe anxiety in relation to attending medical appointments, self-isolating and not attending social events.

Being the older resident of the household and having a generous and helpful personality, he felt a burden of responsibility for the younger residents in the house. I was able to see him on a regular basis to help him resolve some of the interpersonal issues he was experiencing and through conversation, helped him to overcome his fear of medical visits. Part of the resolution was for him to re-locate to a different house, where he now lives with one other independent mature aged man. I feel he has changed his outlook which has improved his quality of life.

independent living

In January 2024, NADO proudly welcomed another new SIL house by purchasing a stunning apartment in Penrith. By March, this beautiful space had become home to two young ladies who decided to embark on this journey together.

As they settled in, their shared living arrangement blossomed into a wonderful friendship. They transformed the apartment into a warm and inviting home. Both ladies with the support of their staff have worked diligently at fostering a shared living arrangement where they are making memories and increasing their independence and love for social activities.

The ladies have bonded over their shared love for all things horror, often planning outings to haunted houses and late-night movie marathons. Each

trip to a spooky attraction was filled with laughter and screams, their hearts racing as they navigated through creepy corridors. Afterward, they would settle in with popcorn and their favourite horror flicks, discussing plot twists and their favourite characters. These experiences not only deepened their friendship but also created lasting memories.

The ladies are very excited for their first Christmas together and to embrace a more independent lifestyle as adult young ladies.

friends of NADO caring for carers

On Friday, October 20, 2023, we celebrated National Carers Week with our Friends of NADO Caring for Carers event at Penrith RSL.

More than one in ten Australians are carers, making a significant contribution not only to our community, but also the national economy. National Carers Week is an opportunity to express our appreciation for the invaluable support these individuals provide.

Carers, whether family members or friends, offer unpaid care to those with disabilities, frail and aged, mental health issues, or substance-related challenges.

With over 85 attendees, this event was our way to give back to our community - celebrating all carers, not just those supporting individuals with disabilities. It was a chance for them to take a break, relax, and connect with others who understand their experiences.

After a delicious two-course lunch, attendees enjoyed a lively round of Musical Bingo, where the atmosphere turned into a sing-along, bringing out some karaoke fun!

We were delighted to share this special occasion with two of our Friends of NADO business partners, Anil from The Profit Coach and Adam, Dave, and Chris from ABCOE.

A huge thank you to our Friends of NADO partners, Penrith RSL, Penrith City Council, and CarersNSW, who generously donated funds through various grant channels. Your ongoing support makes events like this possible, allowing us to give back to our community and honour our carers.

"I would like to thank you and your wonderful team for the lovely lunch and afternoon. It made such a big difference to my life as it would have to all the other carers. You all are such beautiful souls and the wonderful speech that Denise made about carers, brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you for all your wonderful efforts."

"We would all like to thank you for today's NADO carers event at Penrith RSL. It was nicely organised and quite enjoyable which will be remembered by us for a long time. The food was excellent too. Thanking you again."

the friends of NADO charity golf day 2024

We are thrilled to share the success of our 6th Annual Friends of NADO Charity Golf Day, held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the stunning Lynwood Golf and Country Club.

This years event with the help from our major Supporting Partner Elite Sand and Soil, saw us reach full capacity once again with an impressive turnout including 27 sponsors, plus individual teams. The day went beyond golf, serving as a valuable networking platform where donors, sponsors, and supporters build meaningful connections in a relaxed setting.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our esteemed Master of Ceremonies, Troy Kennedy, who played a crucial role in the event’s success on the day. We are also deeply grateful to our long-standing sponsors, including Reozone, ABCOE, Evergreen Turf, Allotrac, Gallagher, and Mack Truck/ VCV Australia. Their continued support since 2018 underscores their unwavering commitment to our cause.

The funds raised are integral to our mission, allowing us to enhance our facilities, acquire accessible vehicles, and host events that cater to our community’s diverse needs. We are proud to announce that the proceeds from this year’s event enabled us to purchase a new Toyota HiAce, equipped to meet the transportation needs of individuals with disabilities in the Nepean community.

We extend our sincere thanks to Jason Roberts and his team at Elite Sand & Soil for his ongoing support leading up to the event, as well as on the day.

To all our sponsors and businesses who donated items to our auction and raffle prices. To every business and attendee who supported the Friends of NADO Golf Day 2024, your contributions have made a significant impact, helping us create a more accessible and inclusive community through NADO Disability Services.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event in 2025!

sensory santa

The reindeer were parked, fed, and watered a little earlier than Christmas Day last year as Santa made a special visit to Share My Ability on Saturday, December 8, and Sunday, December 9, 2023.

Following the success of our 2022 Sensory Santa event, many families expressed interest in returning for 2023. This year, we opened up more spots to give even more families the chance to experience the magic of Christmas.

We noticed that families were able to relax and truly enjoy the experience without the pressure to rush. Children engaged with Santa, listened to enchanting North Pole secrets, and asked plenty of questions. It was heartwarming to see the joy on their faces!

Santa also took the time to share how much the children had grown since last year and even reminisced about their parents, recalling fond memories from when they were little.

Santa at times left his seat to walk around the centre, and join children where they were, being flexible to different needs and so allowing for memorable photos and interactions.

Thank you to Santa (Santa to the Max) and his helper Miss Janette for popping in to Share My Ability and spreading the Christmas Joy a little early and spending time with our families.

Our Sensory Santa experience wouldn’t have been possible without the ongoing support from our Friends of NADO and St Marys Rugby League Club, who generously donated funds through ClubsGrants. Thank you for helping us create such a magical event!

"Thank you so much for a great experience. It was the first time we’ve ever visited, and we will return next year. My son and daughter had such a great time, and it was a joy to watch them have a play with Santa without feeling rushed to move on to the next person. I also love that we got a whole heap of photos too, what a bonus!"

"Sensory Santa was a beautiful calm experience for both my children with needs. There was no waiting in line, it was quiet, welcoming and the focus could just be on Santa! This made the world of difference to our children’s emotions and experience this is reflected in their photos. Thank you for providing this service and making Xmas and Santa accessible to all."

sweet victory

November 2023 marked the beginning of a new tradition at the Penrith CBD Christmas Tree Lighting, where NADO, alongside six other deserving local charities—including Penrith Community Kitchen, Luke Priddis Foundation, WestCare, Our Community Cares, The Haven, and Men’s Shed - participated in the inaugural Gingerbread House Challenge, supported by local businesses sponsoring each charity.

The competition was fierce, with everyone taking the challenge seriously. The goal was to build and decorate a gingerbread house that best represented our charity. The only rule was that while we could prepare items in advance, all construction had to happen during the event.

Judging the creations were Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh; State Member for Penrith, Karen McKeown; and Penrith City Mayor, Todd Carney. Each charity showcased incredible creativity, and I’m thrilled to announce that NADO, along with our sponsor Jeremy Moss from PRD Penrith, emerged victorious in the first Gingerbread House Challenge!

A huge thank you to Gai Hawthorne and the team at Penrith CBD for inviting NADO to be part of this fun event. Special thanks to Jeremy Moss, Olivia Smith from PRD Penrith, Carey Tidyman and Lucia Sleiman from our Penrith Central Day Program, and a shout-out to Jamie Clark for supporting the team throughout the building process.

The prize money of $750 was put to great use, with new art and craft supplies, kitchen items as well as sensory resources for our Penrith Central Day Program.

Congratulations to everyone for a wonderful effort! We’re already looking forward to 2024 to reclaim our crown!

sydney brick show

We were first introduced to The Sydney Brick Show back in 2018 through Robb McGowen, former CEO of NADO, when they held their inaugural exhibit in Penrith.

Before COVID, the Sydney Brick Show attracted massive crowds over both days of the event, captivating attendees with impressive LEGO builds—ranging from replica cars and robots to intricately detailed cityscapes.

The exhibition showcased the incredible creations of talented LEGO builders from Greater Sydney and across Australia, known as AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO). Their passion for crafting wondrous designs from these little bricks truly amazed visitors.

What sets The Sydney Brick Show apart from other fan events is their commitment to offering not only Australia’s premium displays but also a hands-on experience for all attendees.

Each year, they strive to introduce fresh ideas for the enjoyment of patrons.

Since COVID, The Sydney Brick Show has merged with another organization. We are incredibly grateful for their generous donation of $10,000 to NADO from their remaining funds.

Thank you, Robb and The Sydney Brick Show Committee, for your ongoing support and this generous contribution. We wish you all the best on your new adventures as you continue to showcase your talents for everyone to enjoy!
