THEATRE FOR THE PEOPLE I’m totally into people. Oh sure, I enjoy giving a dog a rub on the ear and I love a salmon for supper, but people – their child hearts, their old souls, their resilient bodies and their incomprehensible minds – are my life’s fascination. I think this must be why I have made the theatre my life’s work. Theatre is humanity’s microscope, a miraculous tool for studies in humankind, each investigation deeper than the last with each of us layering understanding upon understanding with each new discovery. That’s why I believe theatre’s great stories contribute to making our society less fearful, more compassionate and simply more fun.

This season is full of incredible specimens: the legendary Donnellys from Perth County all murdered in the night, a Japanese immigrant who survived Hiroshima, the Newfoundland hero and villain Joey Smallwood, brilliant mathematicians, a family negotiating the delicate details of life with disability, schoolchildren fighting an impossible battle, an empathetic but hardnosed hairdresser, a man reborn. All of these characters – these people – are loveable. All of them have some flaw that might appear in us, and some genius that might live in us too. Each one of our playwrights has built these characters on the truths of people – our jealousies and pride, our fears and generosity. And I believe when you put your eye to the microscope this season you’ll catch your own eye twinkling back at you along the way.

Each spring, NAC English Theatre co-presents Canada’s Magnetic North Theatre Festival, our country’s premier national theatre event. A ten-day cultural experience that brings audiences together with Canada’s leading contemporary theatre artists, this unique festival makes its home at the NAC and travels to a new host community every other year. Magnetic North has been staged 13 times in seven cities from Vancouver, BC to St. John’s, NL, providing a platform that has launched dozens of Canadian artists across the country and around the world.

From June 9-18, 2016 Magnetic North pops up in Whitehorse, Yukon, a wilderness city with a diverse and thriving arts scene. As the festival heads north for the first time to bring new Canadian theatre to the land of the midnight sun, this year’s theme is Navigating New Dimensions. Whether contemplating universal isolation, searching for an inner hero, or meeting strangers across time and space, Magnetic North Whitehorse will challenge audiences to open their hearts and minds to a new way of seeing.

As we look toward Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017 and the NAC’s 50th anniversary in 2019, we are proud of the many initiatives that will help us build a national stage for the performing arts across Canada, such as: ANADA SCENE, a national festival that will feature the very best work •C by artists and arts organizations from across the country; • A new production of Harry Somers’ epic Louis Riel, co-produced with the Canadian Opera Company; landmark NAC Commission that pairs three of Canada’s outstanding choreographic •A talents with three of the country’s most exciting composers; • The re-opening of the re-imagined National Arts Centre on July 1, 2017, thanks to a major investment by the Government of Canada.
