(CNN) -- An eye-catching spiral skyscraper with a garden on every level is being planned for Abu Dhabi. The so-called Stairscraper was one of the winners of the Total Housing Competition run by New York's Storefront for Art and Architecture, a non-profit organization which promotes innovative architecture, and Architizer, an online platform for architects. The Barcelona-based architect Nabito that designed the Stairscraper said it is in negotiating to build it in Abu Dhabi, but that details are currently confidential. Alessandra Faticanti, who founded Nabito with Roberto Ferlito, said: "We tried to join horizontal and vertical, designing a horizontal skyscraper, mixing the pragmatism of vertical buildings with the romantic idea of horizontal landscape cities."

Ferlito, 37, said the concept for the Stairscraper came to them while looking at a spiral staircase in Istanbul and trying to imagine it as a building. "We were in Istanbul for the opening night of a building we recently built and while we were speaking we've been astonished by a spiral stair hanging from a building in front of us," said Ferlito. "We started joking about the form, playing and imagining the possibilities of transforming it into a building." Marc Kurshner, co-founder of Architizer, said: "We were really beguiled by the project. Nabito have a great sense of humor and lightness of touch which is all too infrequent in smart architecture. "The Stairscraper deals with real life issues and takes them to their extreme."

CNN earth frontiers INTERVIEW BY CATRIONA DAVIS To NABITO ARCHITECTS. What is the Stairscraper? It is a device to generate social and economical sustainability. We tried to join horizontal and vertical, designing an horizontal skyscraper, mixing the pragmatism of vertical buildings with the romantic idea of horizontal landscape cities. We could define the project as the result of a sensual pragmatism. Generally we associate verticality with the organization and efficiency of a society and with economical sustainability and we associate horizontality with a model of city socially active in which there is strong interaction between functions and users and relations are encouraged. We tried blurring this two models into one criteria, mixing spaces into a hybrid building that is not only residential. We believe the idea of active sustainability, a whole interaction between the environment, the landscape, the society and the culture using in our project strong sensibility and respect. The stairscraper is a superposition of individual singular garden houses with the same characteristics of the horizontal sprawl but liberating the land and concentrating the uses and the energy. It is a Social collective of individualities. The Stairscraper is a 360 degree complex that incorporates all kinds of common facilities and public spaces at different levels maintaining the intimacy of the individual space with the same quality. How and when did you come up with the idea? It’s quite impossible to define the moment when the idea comes up. We are constantly imagining new ideas. Everything could be a starting point suggests us new relations in architecture. An emotion, the beauty of a form could suggest us the way to reach a complete complex castle of criteria For the Stairscraper idea, we were in Istanbul for the opening night of a building we recently built and while we were speaking we’ve been astonished by a spiral stair hanging from a building in front of us. We started joking about the form, playing and imagining the possibilities of transforming it into a building. We though that this form could lead us to a lot of possibilities related to the 360° degree perception of space and the pragmatism of the object. Tell me about the Total Housing Competition that it won We applied for The TOTAL HOUSING competition by “Storefront for art and architecture” in New York City proposing the idea as an abstract concept. And we won. At the same time we proposed the same idea – less abstract – to a client we have in the Middle East. They felt in love with the theme to generate a green desert and we are trying to move forward to begin the construction. So you can see how, really fast, we passed from an emotion to a sustainable criteria to an ongoing project to be built.
The aim of TOTAL HOUSING competition was to investigate on residential projects that address the incongruity between outmoded ideas of domestic space and contemporary urban lifestyles. We focused on the impossibility of proposing an Housing project today without thinking of something much more complex than simply the solution to meet a social need and right. The housing today represents the idea of understanding a wider habitat, a system of complex social relationships with the environment in search of enjoyment of life, mixing different ambits, different uses. “An habitat sensible to the singularities and to the collectivities at the same time. An horizontal skyscraper, designed for cultural exchange, uses, programs and activities in relation with work, communication and leisure. These human attitudes could not be more separate. The time of urban planning related to the division of time and space in 8h 8h 8h (hours for a tot m2 per person; time for work tot m2 per person, time for leisure tot m2 per person, time for the rest tot m2 per person) through which have been conceived modern cities with their standards, has given way during last 15 years, to the possibility of matching residential, recreational, educational and productive activities carried out in a 24-time continuum in which it is difficult to differentiate spaces for their activities. It's easy to say that in relation to the contemporary change in the space-time, these conditions also change the structure of society and the peculiarity of mobility in an urban environment, a social space, more and more defined by cultural diversity, and multiplicity of attitudes and activities. The work space becomes for example an open space to many other possibilities and activated in a productive and at the same time not necessarily circumscribed in a specific area (space-time) of the day. So the investigation of a "TOTAL HOUSING" can not be reduced to the study of some typologies of different and flexible, but rather should be extended to the environment of complicity with the urban complexity. Interior and exterior, intimate and social space, landscape and architecture, the habitat cellula and "his" sensitive relationship with the natural and urban environment at the same time.” When and where will it be built? We are in contact with companies in Abu Dhabi – but it is still confidential. We are in the previous phase of investigation about typologies of soils linked with structural solutions. We have to start working with local engineers to understand real possibilities of reaching water in the desert by the central structure to generate green in the terraces – like well recycling water system to form an oasis. Right now we are focusing on client real needs in order to recalibrate the number of floors and apartments of the Stairscraper and which kind of social and public other functions we will incorporate to generate the hybrid building. Will it be for housing or offices or both? What are the building's environmental credentials? It is Obvious that the building will be especially careful about sustainability using all the techniques, technologies and materials and method of construction to reach environmental sustainability. This is an obligatory condition of the contemporary project and of the contemporary ethic. We are moreover interested in the social and economic sustainability as an advantage for users, people client and investors companies. We are trying to design an active building producing synergy with different factors. Today we must be creative figures and propose strategies to solve real problems and always ready with flexible solutions. We live in a continuous new deal with society. We don’t want to crystallize an idea in a form, but being a volcano of ideas that relate to 360 degrees with presents initial conditions and with all the other actors involved. What is the purpose of the design? We already answer this question we guess, but we’d like to reach a plain satisfaction with this criteria. How many stores will the building have? How many apartments? The structure permit to reach elevate highness, but it will depend of the real needing. We plan the dwelling types with strong flexibility, to give the possibility to users to choose square m2 outside and inside ( so we will have double multiple combinations)and to combine modular spaces in horizontal and in vertical to fit personal and individual needs. Tell me about yourselves? Ages, previous architectural projects etc Thank you for the question. The office opened in late 2007 with two founders: that are the directors of the office. Alessandra Faticanti (1975) and Roberto Ferlito (1973) and incorporated last year two more partners: Sebastiano Palumbo and Luca Faticanti. Nabito Won the important European award “Nouveaux albums des jeunes architectes Paris 2007”,given by the ministry of culture. In 2009 NABITO won the Award “cavalierato giovanile della provincia di Roma” for Art and Architecture and it is feautered in the book “annual of best creativity talents ,young Blood” award given by the Ministry of culture, Rome. In 2010 Nabito is selected on the young Talent award by ministry of youth, Rome. Nabito have two offices, one based in Barcelona ( that is the creative one, the starting of a project) and another one In Rome ( Italy) that is more relate with operative construction. We recently opened a front concept store in Istanbul; we are working to open the same concept store at Dubai. . We inaugurate last summer an urban Park In Frosinone. We are trying to expand the office to develop big scale project in the Middle East. Actually we are working in several other ongoing projects in different scale, in Italy, in Turkey and in the United Arab Emirates. IN the architecture of NABITO, we try to reach a synthesis. A project is a concrete strategy. Each project has a different complex strategy and depends of multiple exteriors factors. The social, economical and cultural environment, create the condition to give a right interpretation to the program in each and different situations. We only have to be good readers to be intelligent proposers.
We are not interested in a linear process of evolution of an idea but we are focusing our work to an explosion of ideas projected into different forms to plan that could change radically in a single commission due to the complex system of external references. We work in different parallels planes letting open all the possibilities. We need complexity; we don’t like a linear scheme to act. We are romantics. We love sensuality not only pragmatism, we love a sensual pragmatism, an irrational rationality. In our office we collect every kind of junks, materials, and forms and sometimes we take one and we transform into a complex project relating it to the environment conditions. Sometimes a conceptual diagram is already the start of a project and is the first thing to approach because is clear that has to be like this. Sometimes we’d like to positively force the mystery of the beauty of a form in order to explain a complex of criteria. Sometimes a form lead us, (like in the “Stairscraper” for example), to have an incredible visionary thinking of how housing and Habitat could change way to live the urban and suburban space. It worked like this; from a simple form to a vision, to criteria, until reality. Our Profession is more complex than before, we are planning sustainable strategies more than buildings or master plans. The space we imagine is defined by this complex strategy to reach a complete sustainable project, socially and economically. Thinking about sustainability as a negative factor for progress is a big error. Sustainability has to be a big occasion for creativity to encourage positive thinking about society and to generate opportunity for the future. Sustainability is the condition to relate us with the environment and surrounding; it is an opportunity to increase creativity and relate different fields of action and different fields of functions. Is there is anything else relevant that you'd like to add? Nabito works with paradoxes. How could preserve individual’s needs in a collective whole? (INDIVIDUAL VS COLLECTIVE) How could involve public domain by private investments? (PUBLIC VS PRIVATE) How could maintain intimacy integrating with social spaces? (SOCIAL VS INTIMICY) How could you work with global Criteria’s rather than personal concepts? How could architecture be a collective action rather then an exclusive private thinking? (GENERAL VS PARTICULAR) How could you involved people into the process of a project rather then constitute a fixed idea?
