EARLY LITERACY LOW LITERACY: A TYPICALLY BRUSSELS PHENOMENON? – The number of low literate and numerate adults increases: supposedly 1 out of 4 adults. » Growing complexity and amount of information sources require ever better skills (multiple literacy). » Recent Belgian PIRLS and PISA results show that the reading proficiency and the reading motivation decrease rapidly among children and youngsters. » In our digital world, it is becoming increasingly difficult for children and adults to remain focused on (long) texts: deep reading is in danger of extinction… – Literacy and socio-economic status: the cycle of literacy is deeply intertwined with the cycle of poverty. – Family literacy: the degree of literacy of the parents is an important predictive factor for the literacy level of the children.

The benefits of reading — even for a short time each day — are varied and life-changing, from improving employability, language skills, social skills, and family bonding, to reducing stress and anxiety. It takes a village to raise a reader. We cannot tackle the situation by ourselves: we need to work together, cross-sectorally. » ODR is an intense cross-sectoral cooperation between preschool organizations, public libraries, both social and cultural partners, school and adult education. » Every professional/volunteer working with young children and their parents can give the message about the importance of an early literacy start.
