s the cooler months settle in, winter brings with it the perfect excuse to cosy up at home, and the opportunity to even tackle a few projects while you’re at it.
In this issue, we’re all about embracing the season with smart ideas to warm up your space, starting with our useful advice on fire pits. Whether you’re dreaming of a DIY backyard build or simply need help choosing the right style for your landscape, we’ve got the inspiration to get you started.
This month, you’ll also find clever laundry storage solutions to bring calm to even the busiest of spaces, plus a guide to choosing the right fence for your property, whether it be classic pickets or modern PVC.
And as always, we round things out with styling tips to keep your home looking its best.
Until next time, happy renovating.
Winter is the ideal time to focus on home projects that bring warmth and comfort. From building your own fi re pit to sealing up draughts and choosing the right textiles, there are plenty of winter renovation ideas that are practical and stylish.
While constructing your own fire pit is an inexpensive option, there is the option to buy a stylish pit that will elevate your backyard design. Keep in mind that not all pits are created equal. Here are a few things to consider:
Size: A larger backyard can handle a generous, built-in fire pit, while smaller courtyards may suit a compact, portable model.
Fuel type: Wood-burning fire pits provide atmosphere and a traditional feel, but gas options
are often better for patios or decks, especially if smoke is a concern.
Style: From modern corten steel bowls to rustic stone surrounds, your fire pit can become a design feature in its own right. Choose one that complements your outdoor palette and existing materials.
Functionality: Some fire pits double as tables or come with barbecue plates, offering year-round usability.
There’s nothing quite like gathering around a fire pit on a crisp winter night. It adds ambience to your outdoor space and encourages entertaining, even when the temperature drops. And with a bit of knowhow, you can build one yourself. You’ll need:
• Fire bricks or heat-resistant pavers
• Gravel or crushed rock
• A shovel
• A spirit level
• A metal fire ring (optional but useful for longevity)
Step 1: Choose your location. Find a level, open area at least three metres away from structures, trees or fencing.
Step 2: Mark out your circle. Use spray paint or a string tied to a stake in the centre to outline your pit — around one metre in diameter works well for most backyards.
Step 3: Dig about 15 centimetres of soil from inside the circle and fill it with a layer of gravel or crushed rock for drainage.
Step 4: Lay your bricks. Stack your fire bricks or pavers around the edge, checking they’re level as you go. You may want to use construction adhesive for extra stability or incorporate a metal fire ring inside.
Step 5: Let everything settle for 24 hours before lighting the first fire. Always follow safety requirements.
• Never place a fire pit directly on grass. Use a level, non-combustible surface like pavers or concrete, or use a concrete type structure.
• Position your pit at least three metres away from structures or combustible materials.
• Never leave your fire unattended. Keep children at a safe distance and supervised constantly.
• Keep a hose or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Use dry hardwood only. Never burn stained, painted or treated timber.
• For balconies or small spaces, consider a gas fire pit.
• To extinguish, use a metal lid, or cover the fire with sand or dirt. Water can cause smoke, mess and corrosion.
Of course, fire pits aren’t the only way to cosy up your home this season. Here are a few more winter-friendly renovation projects to consider.
Seal the gaps: Small gaps in windows and doors can let in chilly draughts and send your heating bills soaring. Now is the time to install weather stripping and door seals.
Upgrade your insulation: Proper insulation is one of the most effective ways to keep your home warm. Consider talking to an insulation expert about reviewing your home and providing you with options.
Textile upgrade: Switching out light summer curtains for heavier blockout curtains can
From
help trap heat inside and add softness to your interiors. A new set of curtains or blinds in your chosen hue can also give rooms an instant seasonal update.
Mood lighting: Winter’s shorter days call for ambient, layered lighting. Replace harsh downlights with warmer globe tones and consider adding dimmers or floor lamps to create a cosy atmosphere.
Bathroom bliss: If you’re
looking to splurge a little, heated towel rails, underfloor heating or a bathroom refresh can add serious comfort during the coldest months.
Outdoor comforts: Add a roof or awning to your deck, throw down a weather-resistant rug, or install cafe blinds to create a winter-friendly outdoor room. With a fire pit close by, your outdoor entertaining season doesn’t have to end in May.
When it comes to home renovations, the laundry is often overlooked, but rethinking this busy space can make a huge difference to your daily routine. A well-planned laundry should be functional and organised to make life easier. The answer? Storage.
Custom joinery is one of the most effective ways to improve storage in the laundry. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets can keep bulky cleaning items, brooms and vacuum cleaners tucked out of sight. Overhead cupboards make use of vertical space and are ideal for storing items you don’t use a lot or laundry powders in labelled baskets or tubs.
Pull-out hampers or tilt-out laundry baskets built into cabinetry keep dirty washing hidden while freeing up floor space. Look for slimline drawers between appliances or beside sinks for storing pegs, gloves, cloths and other everyday essentials.
Stack and save space
If you’re short on room, consider stacking your washer and dryer to free up valuable floor space for additional cabinetry or open shelving. Open shelving above your appliances provides easy access to washing powders, stain removers and spare cloths,
especially when grouped into matching baskets or canisters for a tidy, styled look.
Wall-mounted solutions
Don’t forget the walls — vertical space can be just as valuable as floor or bench space in a laundry. A wall-mounted hanger or drying rack is a great way to air-dry shirts or delicate items without taking up room.
Fold-down or retractable designs are particularly useful for compact laundries.
You can also mount your ironing board and iron onto the wall using a purpose-built organiser. It keeps everything in place, ready to go and frees up storage space elsewhere. Some designs even include a shelf for starch sprays and lint rollers.
Baskets and containers
Open shelving or cupboards can quickly become messy without a little organisation. Use matching baskets or storage tubs to store everything and anything, such as softeners, cleaning cloths and even laundry capsules. Label each container so you know
exactly where everything belongs. For a natural, textural look, opt for woven baskets or rattan containers. For a cleaner, more minimalist style, choose clear or white tubs with simple labelling. Either way, keeping items grouped together will |make your laundry feel calm, clean and cohesive.
If your laundry also doubles as a mudroom or secondary storage area, consider adding bench seating with cubbies underneath, hooks for school bags, or a built-in broom cupboard. Multi-functional storage not only adds practicality but helps maintain a clutter-free zone.
Organise and store anything from towels and sheets to cleaning products and laundry detergent, with the wide Like-It linen stacking basket in from Howards Storage World. Featuring a ventilated design and an open front, this multi-purpose basket is great for creating instant organisation.

In contemporary home design, media rooms are as common as a second bathroom. They provide additional living space for families and are a comfortable area for entertainment. Here, are some ideas for styling your media room.
1. Crafted from solid timber and plywood framing, the Titan four-piece modular lounge with chaise boasts goose feather. Available in your choice of colour, size and con fi guration, it is from Domayne . 2. Your media room can double as a relaxed space for reading or even a catch up over a cup of coffee. Lamps are a great way to introduce soft, ambient lighting into a room. The Cadiz table lamp in antique gold will suit most interiors. It’s from Discount Lighting and Fans . 3. Not sure whether to choose blockout curtains or a modern blind or shutter? It’s okay to have a mix of both, as demonstrated in this living space fi tted out by Shade Me Sunshine Coast . 4. Timber or laminate floors? That’s okay, simply add a plush rug to warm up your space. The Jelly Bean, pictured here in powder blue, is soft, textured and lightweight. It’s from Choices Flooring . 5. The media room is a great place to incorporate a feature wall into your home. Whether it be a bold splash of colour or a more muted tone, it can either be a unique statement or used to tie the space in with the overall palette and design of your home. Wallpaper is a great option. We like the Momentum 7 geometric pattern, available from Ivory T Wallpaper Australia
Celebrity interior designer and founder of Kurved by Design Kellie Richardson says you don’t need a huge budget to make a big impact when it comes to sprucing up your bathroom. Whether you are renovating to sell or just doing a little DIY upkeep, Kellie says costeffective upgrades can dramatically shift a home’s appeal, especially if you are considering flipping a property. “Smart styling creates emotional impact and emotional impact drives better offers,” she says of building sales interest. “You do not need $10,000 to add value. You just need to know where to spend $1000 wisely.” Here are Kellie’s top tips for elevating your bathroom without blowing your budget.
Towel holders, toilet roll holders and shower caddies can instantly upgrade a tired space. Brands like Barelli offer sleek styles in contemporary colours, including black, that are simple to install and effective in updating the space.
Bathrooms love greenery. Add an indoor plant or two, like peace lilies or ferns, to soften the space and add life. Even artificial plants can create a calming, spa-like feel.
A fresh basin can be purchased and installed for well under $200 and it can modernise a vanity instantly. Look for curved or organic shapes for a more up-to-date feel. The impact is dramatic.
Changing your tapware to matte black, brushed gold or even gunmetal is a quick way to bring a designer feel to the room. These pieces are easy to replace and often available in budget-friendly kits from major retailers. Simple changes can be done yourself or by a handyman.
Transform your kitchen without the mess of demolition. Engineered to last a lifetime, our durable surfaces, along with made-to-measure doors, can be installed in as little as a day.
Perfect for makeovers or brand new kitchens.
Swap out basic frameless mirrors for round, matte-framed or backlit options. A new mirror is one of the most affordable ways to shift the overall tone of the room and add a focal point.
Ditch faded or mismatched towels. Choose lush, hotel-style towels in warm neutrals or pops of colour to add energy and personality. Roll or layer them for a boutique look.
Instead of retiling, consider tile-specific paint. It can completely transform the colour and finish of outdated tiles with a clean, modern look for a fraction of the cost.

Leading trend researcher, CSR, has launched its own style guide to provide homeowners with a build and design toolkit.
The way we design Australian homes has always been influenced by global trends, but what makes them truly ours is how we adapt these ideas to suit our unique landscapes, climates and lifestyles. Whether you’re building from scratch or renovating your dream home, understanding the design and building process and making informed decisions is the key to creating a home that reflects your personal style and stands the test of time.
After years of industryleading trend research and forecasting, one of Australia’s leading building materials companies, CSR, has launched its CSR Style Guide — a comprehensive home design and build toolkit covering exterior material colour palettes and unique home designs.
Inspired by global trends and adapted to suit Australians, the guide assists homeowners on their building journey, offering practical tools, expert advice and a wealth of inspiration from
leading Australian brands Bradford, Cemintel, Hebel, Monier and PGH.
By combining curated material palettes, innovative home designs, and insights into the unseen layers of construction it provides a holistic approach to building.
“With the right knowledge, homeowners can shape every aspect of their home — from the colours and materials to the performance elements that ensure comfort and sustainability,” says Renee McGinty, CSR’s marketing general manager. “It’s about creating a space that doesn’t just look beautiful but also feels right for the way you live.”
Here are the main elements to consider when creating your dream home:
1. Define through design Every home begins with a vision, and understanding your style or ‘look’ is the first step. The CSR Style Guide showcases six popular home designs, each with its own unique character, to inspire your build journey.
Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines and minimalist elegance of a contemporary home, the raw textural elements and bold contrasts of industrial design, or the dramatic gabled rooflines and open spaces of a barnhouse, there’s a design to suit every taste. For those seeking timeless charm, the classic style offers traditional gabled rooflines and distinctive
fibre cement cladding, while the modernist design is a highly liveable design style with its nod to mid-century inspiration and connected indoor/outdoor spaces. If a fresh, breezy aesthetic is your preference, the coastal style with its varying rooflines and mixed materials has a simple and effortless look.
“Your home’s design should make a bold statement,” Renee explains. “The shape, materials, and colours you choose define its character and how it fits into its surroundings.”
The CSR iDesign Visualiser Tool takes this one step further by allowing you to see how different designs and palettes come together in a digital 3D environment. You can visualise everything — from the roof tiles to the facade materials — before construction begins. By defining your style early in the process, you can streamline decisionmaking and confidently communicate your vision to your builder or designer, ensuring a smoother build journey.
The colours you choose for your home define its personality and connection to its surroundings. A well-chosen palette can evoke calm, create bold drama, or tie your home to nature. The CSR Style Guide features nine curated material colour palettes, including bright whites, strong darks and rich browns.
“Colours can completely change the look and feel of a home,” says Renee. “With curated palettes, homeowners can create a cohesive design that reflects their style while enhancing their home’s character.”
The white and grey palettes create a relaxed, airy feel, ideal for coastal or classic styles. These work beautifully with weatherboard-style cladding like Cemintel Edge, white-painted trims, or light roofing options like Monier Horizon in Silver Perch.
In contrast, bold blacks and strong darks add depth and drama, perfect for industrial and barnhouse designs. Pair darktoned bricks like PGH Morada
Eco Guard fencing, modern coastal style—perfect for homeowners who want a contemporary privacy fence with long lasting durability.
Ideal for homes, businesses, and outdoor living areas, Eco Guard fencing reduces noise and requires no painting or staining.
• 24 times thicker than colorbond, will never rust, ideal for coastal environments. Unlike timber it will never rot or warp.
• Acoustic sound reduction, enjoy peace and privacy.

Nero with Hebel cladding in a bold render for a sharp, contemporary look. Black aluminium window frames and timber batten fencing can complete the aesthetic.
For warmth and authenticity, rich browns or soft earth palettes bring earthy tones to life, pairing beautifully with barnhouse or modernist homes. Terracotta
“Colours can completely change the look and feel of a home”
roof tiles, bagged bricks, or timber accents work seamlessly with Cemintel Territory Woodlands cladding, timber decking and pebble driveways. Landscaping with native plants, such as eucalypts or drought-tolerant grasses, further enhances the connection to nature.

3. Add depth with texture
Texture brings character and individuality to your home’s facade, transforming a simple design into something extraordinary. Combining materials with varying finishes, creates a facade that is visually striking and full of dimension.
For instance, pairing smooth fibre cement cladding with textured bricks adds contrast and depth, resulting in a layered, architectural look that stands out in the streetscape. This approach also allows you to highlight key features of your home, such as entryways or accent walls.
Texture also lets you express your personal style. A modernist home might use earthy textures like stone or bagged brickwork for a natural, grounded aesthetic, while an industrial design could emphasise bold contrasts with rough, raw finishes for an urban edge. By thoughtfully mixing materials, you can create a cohesive yet dynamic design that reflects your style.
Beneath the surface of every stunning home lies a carefully considered foundation of materials .While a home’s facade and design style often take centre stage, it’s the unseen layers that make it functional and liveable year-round.
Insulation plays a critical role in regulating indoor temperatures, keeping your home cooler in
summer and warmer in winter, reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems.
“Choosing the right products during the build is crucial,” explains Renee. “These elements are harder to retrofit later, so planning ahead pays off in comfort, energy savings, and long-term value.”
Whether it’s roof sarking to prevent condensation, acoustic insulation for quieter living spaces,
or wall wraps to protect against weather extremes, these hidden layers elevate a house into a truly well-designed home.
5. Bring it all together
Thoughtfully planned landscaping extends your home’s materials and design style, ensuring a seamless connection between the building and outdoor spaces.
A garden that complements your home’s architecture adds visual harmony inside and out. Pathways, fencing and plants should enhance your facade. For example, a contemporary home pairs well with minimalist timber fencing or organic paving stones, while an industrial design benefits from bold metal features softened with greenery.
The CSR Style Guide ensures homeowners are not just inspired but informed, giving them the confidence to work with builders and designers.

sturdy and appealing fence option. It offers full privacy and is available in 15 colours, as well as various styles.
Paling timber fence: This no-fuss option is a go-to for side and back boundaries. It’s affordable, easy to repair and install and provides full privacy. Choose treated pine for budget-friendly fencing, or hardwood for a longer-lasting solution. If you opt to install a timber fence in the front, it is worth coating the material in a high-quality stain with a tint to improve aesthetics.
PVC fencing: If you’re after a low-maintenance and long-lasting fence, PVC might be the answer. Gaining in popularity, it’s rot- and termite-resistant, doesn’t require painting and comes in a range of styles. It’s particularly popular for front fences due to its modern and high-end look.
Beyond style, think about what you need your fence to do. Is it purely decorative? Do you need privacy or is the aim to keep sound out? Is it for keeping pets in or kids safe? Consider the following tips when searching for the right fence.
Privacy and security: Solid
timber paling or slatted fencing with minimal gaps are great for screening out neighbours and creating secure backyards.
Aesthetics and charm: Decorative fences like a picket, PVC or rendered wall are best for front gardens and adding kerb appeal.
Low maintenance: PVC and
powder-coated metal fences need less upkeep than timber and are great for homeowners looking to minimise work.
Durability: Look for treated or hardwood timber that can withstand Australia’s climate. Sealing, staining or painting your timber fence will help it last longer and resist weathering.
• Check local council regulations before installing a new fence — some areas have height or style restrictions, especially on street-facing boundaries.
• Consider your neighbour. If you’re replacing a boundary fence, they may need to contribute to costs. It’s always best to discuss your plans with the neighbours early.
• Hire a professional if you’re unsure. A poorly built fence can lean, warp or rot prematurely.
• Maintain regularly — even the best fences need a bit of care. Clean off mould, repaint or reseal timber and check for loose boards or fastenings.
