DESIGN WITH STYLE

We caught up with Sunshine Coast landscape designer Ricky Burgess from Re:Scape Design to talk all things outdoor living, from his lifelong passion for landscaping to the latest in pool design and how to create a space that feels as good as it looks.

Contemporary Australian

This look is all about texture and tone and lends itself to coastal vibes. Think timber decking, large stone pavers, rust-coloured fencing and green plantings that tie the space to its surroundings. In one of Ricky’s projects, a water feature draws the eye while an oversized low bowl pot houses a native grass tree. “It’s about layers,” Ricky explains. “We work with off-whites, soft greys and warm timbers to create something that feels connected to the landscape. The goal is to blur the line between the built environment and the landscape. You want greenery everywhere you look.”

Native grasses like lomandra, kangaroo paw and dianella thrive in the Queensland sun, adding colour without a lot of upkeep. “Other plants we like to use in this setting include Elaeocarpus eumundi, which has to be one of my favourites. Being a rainforest tree, there is just something about it that is captivating in the right setting. Pandanus is another eye-catching feature tree. Pair this with some clumping no-mow grass or ground cover pig face and you’ve got an instant coastal Aussie garden.”

When you’ve spent two decades shaping backyards into beautiful spaces, you learn a thing or two about how people live. For Ricky Burgess, founder of Re:Scape Design, that understanding runs deep. He has been working in the industry since he was 17.

“Being a creative, I wasn’t great at school and more enjoyed being outdoors and working with my hands. I just had a real passion for creating and working out how things go together,” he says.

“I’ve learnt everything through doing, through pushing the creative envelope, and my aim is to build outdoor spaces that work specifically for each client.”

That creative drive has defined his business, which is located on the Sunshine Coast with a second

branch based in Brisbane.

Re:Scape Design delivers the full experience, from initial consultation and 3D design – so clients can view exactly what the end result will look like – to hands-on project management and construction. Ricky oversees every detail, from creating the vision to putting up stringlines with the pool builder or laying out the plants. Each project is personal and he ensures it stays on track.

“I’m not in it for mass production. For me, it’s just as much about the journey as the destination. Every space should reflect the people who live in it. A garden should inspire you. I love finding new ways to create spaces. I don’t do standard backyards.”

Read on for Ricky’s poolside design tips.

Hamptons

Fresh and timeless, a Hamptons-style poolscape is as classic as they come. Here, white-on-white palettes take centre stage. We love the use of painted fencing with cross-panel details, white pots and neutral stone tiles. The contrast of deep green hedging and manicured lawn keeps it feeling fresh and coastal rather than stark.“Lighting makes a huge difference,” Ricky says. “A few warm wall lights or uplights behind the hedging add that subtle evening glow.” Plants like murraya, box hedge or star jasmine complement the structured style.

Cape Cod

Emerging as a relatively new style for Queensland homes, the Cape Cod landscape style blends deep blues, whites and natural textures. This Re:Scape creation captures the look perfectly – a classic rectangular pool, edged by a glass fence, overlooks the wraparound verandah. The white structure will encourage climbing greenery, adding to the overall vibe. “Cape Cod is understated luxury,” Ricky says. “It’s about easy entertaining and spaces that feel open and effortless.” Timber tones and coastal plants like agapanthus and blue chalk sticks can be used to tie it all together. Add a couple of Adirondack chairs and you’ve nailed the look.

Mediterranean

This resort-inspired aesthetic is hugely popular here on the Sunshine Coast, and why wouldn’t it be? This project, completed by Re:Scape, is a great example of the look: smooth rendered concrete surfaces in pale grey, taupe and off-white form the base, while the architecture’s arches nod to that Mediterranean charm. Built-in benches, paired with low-slung lounges and oversized pots, add height and balance – key in good design. “We’re seeing more clients wanting that resort feel at home,” Ricky says. “It’s pared-back, but every element is intentional in its design.” Vertical plantings and tall feature pots introduce greenery without overpowering the palette. Hardy Mediterranean-inspired species such as olive trees, rosemary, bougainvillea and agave work well in the Queensland climate.

BALANCED DESIGN

A‘bold and unique’ property has been named this year’s Sunshine Coast Home of the Year.

Jager Build has secured the

prestigious title in the 2025 HIA Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Awards for its Horseshoe Hill project, which is positioned in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Held in October, the awards recognise the region’s best, and the award winners were announced in front of an audience of southeast Queensland’s leading

residential builders, designers and manufacturers.

The Home of the Year was described as a “striking rural residence that takes its name and form from the horseshoe. Four wings organise the plan, separating private and public spaces while maximising natural light, cross-ventilation and outdoor living. Materiality plays a key role in establishing a strong sense of place.”

Heavy stonework, light-toned vertical timber battens, natural light and a curved roofline are all architectural elements.

In a big night for the company, Jager Build won two other major awards, HIA Sunshine Coast Custom Built Home over $3 million and HIA Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Custom Built Home of the Year. They will now compete at the HIA Queensland Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards. Here, we take a look at some of the other big winners.

PROJECT

2025 HIA Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Kitchen Design

What the HIA says:

Kate Anderson Design won for their bold, sophisticated, monochromatic kitchen design. The Pink Patagonia quartzite, spanning the island and splashback, introduces a sculptural focal point that anchors the space. Strong veining and tonal variation in the stone are balanced by black 2pac joinery, detailed with vertical battens that conceal appliances and maintain clean, rhythmic lines. White cabinetry provides contrast and lightness.

PROJECT

2025 HIA Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Bathroom of the Year

What the HIA says:

St Andrews Constructions secured this title for its restraint, precision and timeless materiality. A soft palette of natural stone and neutral render provides a calm backdrop for the refined detailing throughout. The custom floating vanity in pale stone, paired with twin vessel basins and curved mirrors, sets a symmetrical focal point that balances elegance with functionality. Brass fixtures add warmth and tactility, while the open walk-in shower extends the sense of space and luxury. Natural light filters in through louvred glazing, enhancing ventilation and highlighting the textures of stone and render.

HOW TO:

CREATE A MUDROOM

Been dreaming of a space where the kids can drop the school bags, the shoes are hidden away and umbrellas have a home? If the answer is yes, then you need a mudroom.

The key to a good mudroom comes down to smart planning and a bit of clever construction. First, you need to fi nd the right area of your home. Look for space near the entryway, laundry or even the garage. Keep in mind that you want durable flooring such as tiles, concrete or vinyl planks, as well as a sturdy wall that can hold handles, hooks or joinery.

If you’ve got the space, consider framing a small nook or adding a half wall to de fi ne the area. A half wall, sometimes called a pony wall, can be built with a simple timber frame fi xed to the floor and secured to existing studs or ceiling joists for stability. If you’re con fi dent with basic carpentry, this can be a weekend project.

Otherwise, talk to a licensed carpenter about framing and fi xing it securely to meet load-bearing and safety standards. This clever hack will give the illusion of a built-in area but without the

need for major construction. For storage, combine open shelving with closed cabinetry to hide away the clutter. Flat-pack cabinetry or simple timber frames with plywood fronts can be customised to suit your space. Add vertical panels or VJ boards for texture and durability, then top with timber shelves or a built-in bench.

Don’t forget to include plenty of hooks for school bags and hats, as well as stylish woven baskets for shoes and a bench seat (if you didn’t have space for a built-in one).

Waterproof paint that is easy to clean is a must.

Style your new space with some greenery, a mirror or wall art.

tip!

Always secure cabinetry to wall studs and use suitable fixings for your surface.

QUICK WINS

We’ve compiled four handy tips to help with your renovation project.

Warm

up with texture

Layer timber, stone and fabric finishes to stop modern interiors from feeling stark. Even a single timber beam or woven pendant adds warmth.

Extra storage

Dead space under stairs, along hallways or above wardrobes can all be converted into concealed storage. Custom cabinetry keeps it seamless and clutter-free.

Keep bathrooms clutter-free

Niche shelving in showers and built-in narrow cabinets above vanities provide storage without bulky additions. It’s practical and keeps lines clean.

Future-proof flooring

If you’ve got kids or pets, choose hardwearing surfaces. Timber, hybrid planks or polished concrete handle knocks and spills better than some other flooring options.

Reverse

A long-time favourite due to its timeless appeal and luxe look, natural granite is recognised for its strength and individuality. Each slab carries its own mineral makeup, producing subtle variations in colour and texture. Depending on its chemistry, granite can appear in soft pinks, greys or blacks. It can also be polished to a mirror-like sheen and used indoors or outdoors on benchtops and splashbacks.

BENCHTOP

Choosing the right kitchen benchtop for your renovation is a big decision. Here, we break down the options.

For a touch of luxury, you can’t go past marble. Each slab is naturally unique, with colour and vein variations that add depth. Keep in mind that marble is more delicate than granite or quartz and it’s important to correctly seal to protect against stains. For this reason, many homeowners choose it for island features or low-use zones rather than heavy prep areas.

NATURAL GRANITE
MARBLE

RECONSTITUTED STONE

TIP

When it comes to selecting a benchtop, think about how you live and cook. Do you want low maintenance or are you happy to take care of natural stone? Does your kitchen act as a busy family hub? Talk to your local kitchen expert about your needs.

If easy maintenance and style is high on your list, consider using reconstituted stone (also called engineered stone). This man-made surface combines 93 per cent natural quartz with bonding agents, pigments and other additives to create a strong, versatile material. Caesarstone is a great example of the product, with its sleek, semigloss finish and consistent patterning. Reconstituted stone brings a modern, refined look great for contemporary kitchens.

LAMINATE

For renovators working to a budget, laminate has come a long way. Today’s designs and products, such as Laminex, mimic the look of stone and quartz well. Durable, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours and edge profiles, laminate gives homeowners creative freedom without the high price tag.

Pool feature

Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations managing director

Sean Lynch says smart pools are efficient, convenient and make cleaning and operating your pool easier.

SMARTEN UP

Fully automatic and programmable, smart pools are often made to the specifications of the pool owner. They are made to be efficient, easy to use, manageable and for remote operation. Thankfully, modern technology makes it possible to operate and oversee your pool with just a click of an icon on your smart device.

Plus, in a fraction of the time needed for traditional pools, smart pools enable pool owners to clean and monitor their pools.

Here are some details to think about when deciding if a smart pool makes sense for your family.

Should you invest in a smart pool? There are many different price packages available for smart pools, but the most fundamental pool operations are handled by simpler models. There are also sophisticated smart pool systems available that can control a myriad of different pool features.

Additionally, you have the

option of concentrating only on core management systems, like pool pumps and automated cleaning. A smart pool typically has high up-front expenses. In the long run, though, you’ll end up saving both time and money.

Interestingly, you don’t have to install all of the features of a smart pool at once. Installing your pool’s core and most important systems is a good place to start the process. More features that you like can be added later.

You can upgrade your pool whenever you want, thanks to the flexibility that comes with bringing a smart pool home. The initial installation will be required for a few core systems. This guarantees that it is functioning properly and relieves you of all future cleaning and maintenance concerns. Ensure your pool water remains sanitary all year round by buying a high-quality pool chlorinator online.

How they work

Although smart pools may appear

complex at first glance, they are easy to comprehend. Everything about smart pools is, first and foremost, purposefully made to make your life simpler. This means that nearly anything your smart pool does can be programmed, scheduled, or changed using a mobile device.

One central power source and control panel powers every piece of electronic equipment in your smart pool. There are many layers to your pool’s intelligent automation, ranging from the timer that regulates how long your pump runs to a gadget that checks your pool’s pH and modifies chemical compounds in your pool water accordingly.

The management systems

Every other feature of your smart pool is controlled by the pool’s important management system. It is the most crucial piece of modern technology in your smart pool, given that it enables one-button control of all other devices and equipment.

Today, pool technology companies have transformed this kind of system into websites,

applications and downloaded programs that you can control remotely. Originally, the control board for the management software had to be located in the home of the pool owner.

Make sure you select a reputable pool expert who can deliver a top-notch central management system.

Programmable pool pumps

Due to improper pump usage by most pool owners, automatic pool pumps are one of the most innovative features of smart pools. Most owners are aware of how expensive conventional pool pumps can be to operate in terms of energy. Because of this, it’s typical for people to use the pool pump less frequently and for shorter periods than is necessary.

There’s no need to worry about how long your pump lasts because automated pool pumps use up to 85 per cent less energy than conventional pool pumps. You can easily leave your pool pump running whenever you want with a smart pool.

Self-cleaning systems

Regular pool maintenance

includes scrubbing the pool with a long hose at an awkward angle and removing debris with nets. If you’re cleaning your pool by hand, no matter how hard you try, it will never be completely clean.

But with the aid of cuttingedge self-cleaning technology, smart pools can maintain themselves from the bottom up.

A system of nozzles mounted on the pool’s bottom powers the automated pop-up infloor cleaning system. Water is streamed through the nozzles and water jets.

Robotic salt chlorinators

Do you struggle to maintain the ideal pH balance in your pool? An

automated salt chlorinator might be something you want to consider. The pH level in your pool is always safe for your family, thanks to smart pools with automated salt chlorinators that automatically verify the levels and add chemicals accordingly. This means that you can take advantage of a cleaner pool without investing additional time to determine the precise chlorine balance in your pool water. Automated salt chlorinators never exaggerate the amount of chlorine required for a pool, so you may also be able to save revenue on pool chemicals each month.

KNOW THE RULES

When you are committing thousands of dollars to a pool project, it pays to be aware of the Queensland safety standards. Sure, any reputable pool builder will be across the dos and don’ts, but having first-hand knowledge is also beneficial.

According to Sunshine Coast Council, pools capable of holding more than 300 millimetres of

water, must comply with the Queensland pool safety standard. This includes:

• swimming pools

• indoor and outdoor spas

• portable and inflatable swimming pools.

In addition, all regulated pools and spas must have a compliant safety fence. This includes spas fitted with a lockable lid or cover.

FENCING TIPS

• Where corrugated metal is used for a swimming pool barrier less than 1800mm in height, the corrugations must be placed vertically or protected (in full height) with nonclimbable material.

• Ensure swimming pool gate hinges are at least 900mm apart from the top of the upper hinge to the top of the lower hinge.

• Ensure the overall height of the swimming pool safety barrier is at least 1200mm.

• Ensure the gate opens outwards away from the swimming pool enclosure.

Source: Sunshine Coast Council.

YOUR POOL SAFETY CHECKLIST

Whether it’s a new pool or you’ve had one for years, it is wise to do a safety check at the start of each swim season.

Replace, tighten or adjust the hinges on gates to ensure they self-close and self-latch from any stationary position, including the resting position.

Remove or trim back any branches of trees/shrubs that a child could use to climb over the swimming pool safety barrier.

Install permanently fi xed security screens on windows that open out into the swimming pool enclosure.

Permanently remove all climbable objects (eg. outdoor furniture, pot plants) away from the

swimming pool safety barrier and surrounding area.

Ensure clearance under the swimming pool barrier is no greater than 100mm.

Ensure the manual release for pool gate latching devices is at least 1500mm above the fi nished ground level and at least 1400mm above the highest lower horizontal member.

Ensure the manual release for the latching device is in good working order.

Ensure the gate has obstruction-free movement through the full arc of operation.

EXPERT TILE DESIGN & INSTALLATION

We have a fantastic range of pool mosaics, pool coping pavers/ tiles and pool surrounds . We have a range to suit any style pool and home.

Speak to our friendly team about a free quote for supply & installation of your new tiles.

AROUND THE POOL

There is more to buying a pool than settling on the size and shape. Once it is installed, you will need to make a decision about the surface material for the wet areas and surrounding gardens. A surface choice will depend on your budget and requirements. Concrete is a less expensive option than tiling or pebblecrete so weigh up the positives and negatives before making a decision.

DECKING TIPS

The summer sun can be harsh on wooden decking. There are a few ways to ensure a longevity of a pool deck – it will just take some time and commitment. Regularly clean the area and stain and steal the deck at least once a year. Consult with your local paint supplier to choose the right products. Stain should have an element of UV protection and be applied with a paint roller or bristle brush.

TILING

If you go down the route of tiling, it’s important to do your research. Australian standards recommend a slip resistance surface should be used around a pool. Talk to flooring professionals to find a style that has a long-life guarantee.

TRADITIONAL DESIGN

A heritage-style or traditional home requires specialised landscaping. This lawn design patterned with pavers blends naturally and creates a beautiful landscape.

Your pool and the surrounding landscaping should complement your home and its style. The contemporary use of concrete, plantings and timber is well suited to a modern and sophisticated home.
