NEW CBD DRAWS MAJOR INTEREST

A

Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Sunshine Coast Council, global infrastructure and property development company John Holland, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and SunCentral Maroochydore signalling the continuation of exclusive negotiations to develop multiple lots in the new Maroochydore city centre. John Holland, which delivered the $150 million Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital in Kawana, is poised to take a stake in the new city centre in a deal with an end value of more than $200 million. USC vice-chancellor Greg Hill says the university is considering a combination of student accommodation, teaching and community spaces in the new city centre, while the council has already committed to having its primary civic presence in the core commercial precinct, with customer service facilities, a council chamber and work space accommodation for staff and councillors. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council will maintain a strong presence in Nambour and Caloundra into the future. Jamieson says John Holland’s interest in the CBD project is a “huge vote of confidence in the future of the Sunshine Coast.” “We are creating Australia’s first truly smart city for the 21st Century – one which

John Holland Group Queensland and Northern Territory Project Director Chris Mattes, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill, SunCentral Maroochydore Pty Ltd Board Chairperson Doug McTaggart will generate thousands of construction jobs, more than 15,000 permanent jobs and provide a $4.4 billion boost for the local economy,” he says. “John Holland obviously understands the value in being part of the early stages of this development and the growth trajectory of our region, with the development of a new CBD, the opening of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital, the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport and our plans for an international broadband submarine cable linking the region directly to global markets.”

FAREWELL GARTH FRASER A Caloundra resident who was a worldrenowned expert in small scale model railways and a passionate member of the Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway committee has passed away. Garth Fraser was a brilliant electrical engineer of world standing with a love of railways and was the driving force behind the restoration of the original KRAUSS locomotive, which ran between Buderim and Palmwoods between 1914 and 1935. Garth graduated from the University of Queensland in 1953, then spent a year in the USA on a general electric’s graduate training program, followed by four years with the Canadian Navy based in Ottawa. In 1958, he returned to Brisbane to undertake further studies and was a lecturer at the Queensland University until 1971, when he moved into the defence industry in Holland and subsequently South Australia. He retired as chief scientist at AWA Defence Industries in 1990 and he and his wife Myra settled in Buderim until later moving into a retirement village in Caloundra in 2009. Garth had a love of model railways and was a member of the Caloundra District Model Railway Association. He was also a world-renowned expert in small scale model railways and in 2005 received the award of Master Model

Railroader from the worldwide National Model Railroad Association – one of a small number of people in Australia to receive this award. He also designed and built a diorama of the old Buderim tramway yards, which were located on part of the present school grounds, swimming pool site and the top end of Lindsay Road. The diorama includes models of the KRAUSS loco and rolling stock. It is displayed by the BuderimPalmwoods Heritage Tramway group and will be included in the display of the KRAUSS loco in Buderim when that eventuates.
