Nashville was the first city to acquire an FM radio license and David Cobb was the radio announcer (dj) who created Nashville’s nickname, “Music City” in the 50’s. Two wellknown thoroughbreds, both Seabiscuit and War Admiral, are from Nashville. The world’s longest-running live music radio show, calls Nashville home. You know it as the Grand Ole Opry, but was originally called the WSM Barn Dance. Oprah Winfrey started her news career in Nashville at WLAC-TV while she attended Tennessee State University. MYCHARITY

CRUISING for CANCER Jenn Benns is at it again! And it’s not like she ever stopped! credible nonprofit that benefits from the funds raised throughout the challenge. Within this countrywide challenge, you have one month to reach your personal mile goal and your fundraising goal. Jenn’s personal goal was 300 miles and $8,000 in donations. While the support for Jenn was already amassing social media during her journey with cancer, there was an overwhelming wave of support in her fight for childhood cancer, and donations came pouring in.

T

here are not many women like Jenn, and it’s probably because she is as strong as they come, mentally and physically. Her story is one of faith, and in the power of telling yourself: just don’t give up, keep going. A warrior and survivor of breast cancer and lung cancer, a group was formed during her fight called #TeamJenn, and us at MYNASHVILLE were avid supporters of this cause. Jenn and her team didn’t have the chance to meet the children, however they met one very special doctor that shared their passion in ending childhood cancer, Dr. Vivian Weiss. Follow her online @DrVivianWeiss

Under her team, of course named Team Jenn, she joined up a total of 89 people of all ages from across the U.S. During the month of September, Jenn caught COVID-19 and continued to bike to reach her goal. A superwoman if we’ve ever seen one, on September 30th at 11:17pm, Jenn reached 300 miles. Her complete team raised over an incredible $125,000 and rode over 29,000 miles collectively. Jenn shares what she learned throughout this year was the power of one person saying YES. The power of herself saying yes to joining this bike challenge, the power of her supporters donating every day, and to everyone in the nation for supporting this cause led to this moment in time. This significant gift to a cause without a cure. Team Jenn had the opportunity to go to the hospital where their donations were sent, which was Monroe Carell Jr. Chil-

Jenn, as you will learn, is the toughest type of woman. So, as she bared chemotherapy and treatments, she continued to get out into nature and continued her active lifestyle. She began biking during treatment in August of 2020, where she purchased her first bike on Facebook Marketplace, a beach cruiser. Biking and hiking became her life and what everyone and she shared that it really kept her going.

The Great Cycle Challenge is one of the most special kinds of ways to raise money for a cause, especially one that happens every day without most people knowing or seeing. “Children are our future, and the future of our health,” says Jenn. You never know what could happen if you just say YES! MV Join the Great Cycle Challenge! Visit greatcyclechallenge.com and search for Team Jenn! As her love for biking grew, she joined the Great Cycle Challenge in 2020, and began biking all over the valley, all while undergoing chemotherapy. But she had a greater fight to feed, and that was ending childhood cancer through the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, which was the in-

dren’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN. It was during the midst of the pandemic, so Jenn and her team didn’t have the chance to meet the children, however they met one very special doctor that shared their passion in ending childhood cancer.

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

CARRIE UNDERWOOD A LOOK OUTSIDE OF HER MUSIC CAREER

C

arrie Underwood has become such a household name in country music, and all music for that matter. She has ventured in so many projects inside and outside of music that it’s hard to remember her as just the small-town girl that was on American Idol 17 years ago. Little did she- or anyone- know the amount of success that would come her way because of the outcome of one show. Carrie just finished her Las Vegas residency at Resorts World Theatre, and recently released a new album called “Denim and Rhinestones.” Fans are excited to hear that she will begin a US Stadium tour starting in October of 2022, stopping in 43 cities across the country, and of course, making a stop right here in Nashville at Bridgestone Arena.

With bestselling records like “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats,” and a newer favorite, “If I Didn’t Love You” featuring Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood has a likability to her that appeals to a wide audience range. Being a nationwide and international touring artist, she remains humble, relatable, and always ready to serve her community. While tapping into her incredible career as a musician, we found that she is much more than a singer. Here are 5 things that you didn’t know about Carrie Underwood! FITNESS Carrie Underwood is an avid fitness enthusiast. This is arguably one of the things you can tell she feels very passionately about outside of her music. She makes being healthy a top priority no matter how busy her life gets. She models how a busy working mom who also nurtures a career, hobbies, relationship, can make living healthy a year-round thing. Carrie Underwood’s passion for fitness led her to a partnership with Creative Labs & CAA, in collaboration with her personal trainer Eve Overland, to create a fitness app called Fit52. The fitness app is designed for the person that is balancing a family, work, friends, hobbies, etc. It contains workouts for beginners to more advanced fit conscious people, and best yet, can be completed in as little as 30

minutes. The app claims to eliminate the complexity of creating your own workout routines. Any person who makes working out a part of their lifestyle will tell you that it’s important to change things up to continue to challenge your body with different work outs. With Fit52, you get a different workout each time. A card is randomly revealed to provide you with a different full body work out each time. WRITING In 2020, Carrie Underwood released her first book. The book, called “Find Your Path: Honor Your Body, Fuel Your Soul, and Get Strong with the Fit52 Life,” is a gentle approach to trying your best to be the best you 52 out of 52 weeks in the year. It’s a practical way of incorporating diet and exercise into your busy lifestyle every week. She believes that health and fitness is a lifelong journey and although we are human and may have our bad days, it is important to try and be healthy overall. In her book, she lays out recipes, work out plans, and introduces you to Fit52. Carrie explains that the essence of Fit52 is to adopt a lifelong healthy lifestyle so if you do have an off-day and cave into the sweets or comfort foods, it won’t throw you completely off path and it’s easier to pick back up your healthy habits. MOVIES/TV The country singer has dabbled in acting. She was on the TV show “How I Met Your Mother” and made her film debut “Soul Surfer” an inspiring true story of surfing champion Bethany Hamilton who survived a shark attack in 2003. Carrie Underwood played a small, but important role. She played Sarah Hill, a religious leader who was key in helping Bethany through her healing journey. Staying true to her Christian faith, Carrie Underwood has said she is very selective of the roles she chooses to play. She hasn’t been in any recent roles but has said in the past that she isn’t ruling out acting. ENDORSEMENTS Companies are eager to have Carrie be the face of their brands. This is shown through various endorsement deals, including a nail polish collection with Nicole by O.P.I., which includes a signature MYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

golden shade called Carrie’d Away. Then there was the global endorsement by Skechers, Olay Skin Care, and the fitness apparel line “Calia, by Carrie Underwood”created exclusively for Dicks Sporting Goods. Most recently, she became a member and joined the likes of Jennifer Lopez for the hydration sports drink Body Armor, and it’s no surprise that she’d put her name stamp on it given her passion for fitness and health. Carrie is pretty much everywhere! She has had a string of endorsement deals since shooting to fame and the songstress doesn’t show signs of slowing down. PHILANTHROPY Part of what makes Carrie Underwood so likable is that she is still and will always be the same hometown girl from Oklahoma. Her values and the things she cares for remain with her to this day. She demonstrates this through her involvement with her philanthropic work. She has supported numerous causes as she believes it is important to give back to the community. She created C.A.T.S. in 2009. C.A.T.S - Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation to thank her hometown, who she says has been very supportive of her. The foundation directly impacts the community in a variety of areas. Some of the ways the foundation has helped has been by opening a shelter so dogs can be rescued, and she strongly supports spaying or neutering. The foundation is also committed to helping children in the community reach their goals by awarding scholarships and giving donations like equipment to the schools in the community. Merchandise for the C.A.T.S foundation can be found on the website https://www.thecatsfoundation. com/. The web site states that all proceeds from purchases benefit the C.A.T.S. foundation. Carrie is also donating $1 from every ticket sale of her new US tour to benefit and support U.S. military veterans through the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. PUB CRAWLING! Going on a bar crawl is the best! You get to hang out with your friends, get a little exercise, and best of all get your drink on!

A

lthough if you have only participated in them before it can be a little more of a challenge to plan one for yourself. So, here are some things to keep in mind to plan the best bar crawl your friends, coworkers, and acquaintances have ever been on. First things first: You must set up a route! There are a few things to keep in mind, firstly, how many bars you want to stop at. We recommend 4-6, as it gives you enough places to stop at, but not too many so that you are exhausted at the end of the night. Also, make sure to keep all the bars in close proximity; you’re doing this to visit bars, not to go on a hike. Although, if you absolutely must go across town, make sure that the bars are close to public transportation. Lastly, you will want to consider the type of group you are planning this for. Think of the kinds of bars they would prefer, some groups want to visit a good ole dive bar, while others want to spend their night in high-end lounges. Also, don’t choose bars that are going to have high wait times or that you might not be able to get into.

bar all night. You can try punch cards, scavenger hunts or some type of reward or prize system. Anything will work as long as you and the group will enjoy it. One thing you should definitely not forget is food! Everyone will need to fuel up if they want to last the whole night. Try and get something to eat about half way through. You can either take a break and head to a nearby food joint, or you can order food at one of your stops. Just make sure to plan ahead, and factor it in to your total time.

Try and get something to eat about half way through. You can either take a break and head to a nearby food joint, or you can order food at one of your stops.

Next, make sure that you give the bars on your route a heads up, and let them know the date, approximate time and amount of people to expect. This is just the right thing to do; this way the bar will know to be ready for a group and prepare for it. There is nothing worse that planning out a whole night to find that the bar is closed for an event or way understaffed for a large group. The bars on the route will really appreciate it, and they may even let you use a special area of the bar or give you some group discounts. Now, you can plan some fun for your group! If your group is the kind that loves to have a theme- now is the time to pick it out. Choose something that everyone can relate to, so that everyone will dress up and participate. You should also think about adding some incentives, so people are motivated to go to the next bar instead of giving up and staying at the same

Don’t forget to coordinate everyone. Social media is a great way to do this; you can make a group for your bar crawl! This will keep everyone up to date, so no one forgets the date or time, and it will keep communication open especially for any last-minute changes. Also, this is a great way for everyone to post their pictures, and any other fun experiences from the night. These easy suggestions will help you plan the best bar crawl your group has ever been on. STRETCHING & FLEXIBILITY TIPS It’s not enough to build muscle and achieve aerobic fitness. You need to think about flexibility, too. Stretching can help.

Y

ou may think of stretching as something performed only by runners or gymnasts. But we all need to stretch in order to protect our mobility and independence. A lot of people don’t understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily. Why stretching is important Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage. For example, sitting in a chair all day results in tight hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way, which inhibits walking. Likewise, when tight muscles are suddenly called on for a strenuous activity that stretches them, such as playing tennis, they may become damaged from suddenly being stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support the joints, which can lead to joint injury.

Find a physical therapist (your local directory is a good place to start) who can assess your muscle strength and tailor a stretching program to fit your needs. If you have chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or arthritis, you’ll want to clear a new stretching regimen with your doctor before you start. The cumulative effect of stretching Stretching once today won’t magically give you perfect flexibility. You’ll need to do it over time and remain committed to the process. It may have taken you many months to get tight muscles, so you’re not going to be perfectly flexible after one or two sessions. It takes weeks to months to get flexible, and you’ll have to continue working on it to maintain it. A hamstring stretch will keep the muscles in the back of your thigh flexible. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you. Slide your hands down your legs until you feel a burning sensation. Hold for 30 seconds, then slowly return to a sitting position.

Proper execution We used to believe that stretching was necessary to warm up the muscles and prepare them for activity. However, mounting research has shown that stretching the muscles before they’re warmed up can actually hurt them. When everything is cold, the fibers aren’t prepared and may be damaged. If you exercise first, you’ll get blood flow to the area, and that makes the tissue more pliable and amenable to change. All it takes to warm up the muscles before stretching is five to 10 minutes of light activity, such as a quick walk. You can also stretch after an aerobic or weight-training workout. Hold a stretch for 30 seconds. Don’t bounce, which can cause injury. You’ll feel tension during a stretch, but you should not feel pain. If you do, there may be an injury or damage in the tissue. Stop stretching that muscle and talk to your Trainer or Doctor. MN

Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean, and flexible, and this means that exertion won’t put too much force on the muscle itself. Healthy muscles also help a person with balance problems to avoid falls. Where to start With a body full of muscles, the idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming. But you don’t have to stretch every muscle you have. The areas critical for mobility are in your lower extremities: your calves, your hamstrings, your hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh. Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also beneficial. Aim for a program of daily stretches or at least three or four times per week.

Keep it simple with the basic three, cleansing, toning and moisturizing. (Don’t forget to hydrate as well to rid the body of toxins and encourage a radiant glow!) Skin care doesn’t have to be expensive either! I’m into natural and clean skincare and after a visit to my holistic esthetician I learned that Honey was a great replacement for expensive face washes! What a treat! It feels like a

spa every time I use it and my skin is beyond soft! In fact honey is not only super nourishing and hydrating but it’s also full of probiotics, is antibacterial and incredibly healing. I use an organic raw honey that has a bit of honeycomb in it, great for exfoliation! I also use a home made toner of essential oil of Frankincense and distilled water. Frankincense has been used for centuries on the skin and is hailed as a powerful anti-aging essential oil. It is said to slow signs of aging amongst many other things. It’s been amazing for me. Lastly, I swear my castor Oil on my face and body. It does not clog pores and it’s a packed with much needed essential fatty acids our skin needs and penetrates deeply hydrating the skin like nothing I have ever tried before! One little secret to remember when using castor oil is that less is more! Also, be sure to massage it into your skin in a circular motion. Trust me, your skin will glow! (I also mix in various essential oils depending on what I feel my skin is in need of at the time. Lavender, rose, orange, clary sage, frankincense, ginger etc.) Feel free to experiment and see what works best for you! **The most amazing and purest essential oils I’ve discovered and used personally (Also used in top notch spa’s around the world) are by world renowned artisan Trygvè Harris and founder of Enfleurage. Enfleurage is New York’s first and only store specializing in essential oils and incense from all around the planet. They import directly from farms and stills, bringing in high quality, fresh and sparkling, essential oils from 6 continents. Nothing is added to their oils and hydrosols. No preservatives, no isolates, no ‘enhancers’, no alcohol (except for a few alcohol tinctures.) They also have all pure botanical perfumes available, truly one of a kind! They are pure heaven! “When you breathe in Enfleurage Essential Oil, you are breathing in its soul. Purely.” They also ship worldwide, go to www. Enfleurage.com. You can also visit their distillery at www.enfleurage.me! Super cool and really gives you an insight and education of what goes into making these amazing oils. MYBEAUTY & HEALTH

LOVE TRAVELING, BUT YOU DON’T WANT TO RUIN YOUR PROGRESS? I totally get it…

My mindset around traveling used to be a lot different than how it is today.

I

committed to: I will find a balance with health even when I travel so I can have the best of both worlds and that’s exactly what I did.

Wouldn’t you love to come back from a trip to find out you dropped 5lbs? I think the number thing is definitely a mindset. Most people when they travel get into this mindset of “Hey, it’s vacation!” and go all out, then feel bloated when they get home from over doing it. Wouldn’t it be nice to truly feel refreshed when you got home? If that’s what you want, then let’s change that mindset to finding balance while on vacation so you can enjoy yourself and feel great. FOOD WHILE TRAVELING Let’s face it, most places these days are extremely accommodating to someone living a healthy lifestyle, so when you sit down in a restaurant, instead of falling into old habits and going for the pizza or burger, opt for something a bit healthier such as burger with a lettuce wrap and fries. Yes, I said fries. You can have that balance and not be totally screwed up. But let’s say you just do chicken and vegetables for lunch then for dinner you want something bad. Then go for it! 1. you are on vacation and 2. one meal won’t screw up your progress even if you do it 3 days in a row! I did that little trick for a week in Miami and it was totally fine because 80% of my eating was good and we stayed so active while we were there. Which is another tip, I’ll share in a few. Staying on the topic of food, if you are traveling and know that there are only fast-food places on the way to your destination, then pack healthy options! You can get easy snacks or pack a cooler full of goodies for yourself. It really is that simple.

18

Just recently, we went on a quick trip, I knew I’d probably get hungry because of traffic and I know my habits… if I don’t have healthy snacks then i will be walking into a gas station and picking up candy in no time. So I packed up my healthy snacks and when we hit the gas station, I thought about the candy but knew I wanted ice cream and wine later so chose to stick to what I packed and passed on the candy! So, my tips: pack healthy options and pick healthy options 80% of the time while you are traveling. You will feel better energy wise and more confident because you kept your word to yourself. HOW TO STAY ACTIVE WHILE TRAVELING This used to be my biggest mental block because the gym I use is amazing and I always feared that I wouldn’t get an amazing workout while traveling, but MYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

then I realized how great it is to switch up my routine and do different exercises! It’s a great way to get sore, and do something new and exciting. Plus, it keeps me creative because most gym hotels suck! So now, I just pack my bands, workout in the hotel for 10 minutes and for cardio, I aim to do 20 minutes of walking around and exploring to get in my workout. A lot of times, we overthink things and feel that we have to be in a gym to actually workout but that’s not the case. You can stay active by doing simple body moves, using bands, using luggage as weight then go out and walk around. Don’t stress about not doing your exact normal routine. Focus on the positive on how you actually got active. That’s a huge win! Tana Ashlee The Weight Loss Expert

4 WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT!

Nashville summer is officially here! And while our weather isn’t as bad as some places can be, we still get our fair share of sun! Here are 4 fun ways to beat the heat this summer:

1.

2.

HIT THE POOL: This one is a no brainer! Whether you have a pool in your backyard, you borrow your friends, or you have to scour Broadway hotels for one, the pool is the epitome of beating the heat this season. Remember to have your favorite drink or beer in hand, bring your best tanning oil and sunscreen, and make sure all of your best friends are in attendance because you might as well make a whole day adventure out of it.

3.

LAKES AND RIVERS: Nashville is the perfect place for relaxing at the lake or bobbing down the river, and there are a couple great spots to do both. Percy Priest Lake has campgrounds you can spend the weekend at, fishing, and boating, while Harpeth River has tons of activities to do with the whole family.

4.

GET OUTDOORS Beating the heat can also mean embracing the heat, right? We think so! There are way too many fun things to do outdoors, so why stay inside?! We have the Nashville Zoo, a plethora of music events coming this summer, and not to mention some of the most beautiful hiking and biking trails. So yes, get out there this summer, just maybe pack on the sunscreen!

VISIT A MUSEUM: While it is a must that we appreciate the culture and arts, a museum is the perfect way to stay in air conditioning while enjoying some time away from home. Consider the Tennessee State Museum or visit the Gallery Iconic Guitars at Belmont. Or get your greek on at Nashville’s Parthenon!

BROTOX: A MEN’S GUIDE TO BOTOX The talk of the town is that “Brotox” is what’s trending. Wait what? Yes, you read that right. Brotox is the popular term used for botox treatment in men!

E

VERYONE deserves to look good AND feel good – so let’s normalize it and stop pretending we don’t care about looking younger Boys! Yes, this means that you can have healthy and rejuvenated skin, not just your lady. Did you know that botox is the top leading choice for non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the U.S? And did you know that botox is more than just a procedure for wrinkles? It can also help if you suffer from any of the following health conditions such as excessive sweating, neck spasms, or lazy eyes. And I know what you’re probably thinking. Is Botox safe? YES! And it doesn’t have to look unnatural! This procedure is completely safe (when administered by a professional doctor and in small doses) and it’s super quick and most patients don’t even require any numbing treatments, but if you need it, it’s there! For the treatment, a botulinum toxin is injected into the facial muscles in the area that needs assistance. What this does is that it allows for the chemical to send signals to the nervous system and tells the muscles to relax-which is what helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and helps us to look younger. And we get it. We understand how intimidating it can feel to choose whether Botox would be right for you so we have a few more things for you to consider in terms of your own skin care goals and needs to help make that decision a little bit easier! Some common areas of the face where men get Botox are around the mouth (say

goodbye to laugh lines), between the eyebrows (eliminate frown lines), and in the forehead (rid of creases.) After the procedure, be prepared for some minor side effects. You may have some bruising, swelling, and mild pain within the area that typically lasts about one to four days after the injection. The doctor may also recommend avoiding intense physical activity or refraining from alcohol for at least a day. Botox will usually last about three to six months before you start seeing the appearance of your wrinkles so be sure you do your research on a reputable professional and clinic- because looking & feeling good will never go out of style. BRADY HARRIS, MD For maintaining or creating your most elite body, local Nashville cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Brady Harris, offers his services to your aesthetic wants and needs.

H

e is a triple board-certified surgeon, and his wide range of specialties, including facial, body, and breast cosmetic procedures have created a high demand for his services in the greater Nashville area. From those stubborn pockets of fat that won’t go away to the Mommy Makeover you’ve always wanted, Dr. Harris offers top of the line services at Elite Body Sculpture as well as at his private practice, Image Surgical Arts. Elite Body Sculpture is known most famously for providing a state-of-theart minimally invasive body sculpting procedure, known as AirSculpt® and Dr. Harris is one of the key providers for this service. This liposuction procedure is for candidates who are healthy, nonsmokers, and also those interested in transferring the removed fat to different areas. This creates an hourglass shape for women and a more chiseled appearance for men. Dr. Harris shares regarding the benefits, “While there aren’t necessarily a lot of overall physical health benefits directly from liposuction, indirectly patients will often see the changes in their bodies and be encouraged to live a healthier lifestyle to maintain those results.” Through his privately owned practice, Image Surgical Arts, Dr. Harris has an incredibly complete catalog of services, from med spa services like filler and botox, to cosmetic surgery of the entire body, including tummy tucks, Mommy Makeovers, and various breast procedures (augmentation, lifts, etc.). Within his practice is a stateaccredited surgery center, which allows all procedures that require general anesthesia to be performed in-house. Patients can feel at ease returning to the same office for their consultation, procedure, and follow up appointments.

24

Among his specialties, liposuction has remained one of his most frequently requested services. While there is volume reduction liposuction, which is simply removing the fat for a slimmer physique, Dr. Harris specializes in high-definition liposuction and is one of the top surgeons in the country performing it. As opposed to volume reduction liposuction, high-definition liposuction provides increased muscle definition from taking additional fat

out of the most superficial level of fat below the skin. It is truly a testament to Dr. Harris’ surgical artistry, where anatomical knowledge is required and a commitment to precision is shown in the final results. When it comes to transforming the body into its most elite state, there is one surgeon that shines brighter than the rest, and he is one of MyNashville’s Top 100 Doctors. MN

Step By Step: LIFE ON THE CUTTING EDGE

Driven by the positive impact that she has on her patients, Dr. Yerusalem Lanier is healing the world one step at a time by relieving pain, improving function, treating infections and preventing life-threatening complications in the field of Podiatry.

A

fter all, if our bodies are temples, they must stand on solid foundations. Dr. Lanier has devoted her life’s work to ensuring the health and wellness of the foot and ankle and has grown into a leader in her field, operating four locations. What initially inspired her to pursue this profession (and what keeps her interested in it), could be summarized essentially by this one sentiment: Dr. Lanier’s love for people. It was her love for her parents who have had many complications with their feet, from ailments such as gout and diabetes, that sparked her willingness and passion for helping others. The “joyful interactions” with her patients, her dedicated team, as well as others she comes in contact with throughout her day is held in high regard by the doctor as “a source of great satisfaction.” Dr. Yerusalem Lanier genuinely loves people, a hallmark of a great and skilled healer. Dr. Lanier completed undergraduate studies in Nashville at Fisk University. She graduated from Kent State Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, then progressed to residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at St. Vincent Hospital outside Boston in Worcester, MA. After completing this specialty training, she moved back to Nashville and opened Cutting Edge Foot and Ankle Clinic. Dr. Lanier is excited to be adding an additional location in the near future, for a grand total of five loca-

tions from which to serve those in need of care. “Our patients often make long drives to get to us, which is why we’re excited our multiple locations are making it less of a chore for more and more in the Nashville area. Our Brentwood expansion makes it so much easier for our patients from the south side to get in to see us!”

Regarding who should actually be a patient, or rather, what qualifies one to have the need for a podiatrist, the doctor says “Not everyone needs to see a podiatrist. But if you are noticing any foot problems, we love to catch things early.” She goes on to offer her expertise: “Anyone with diabetes should get regular care to prevent major, potentially life and limb-threatening complications. If you have foot pain for any reason, we can tell you what the problem is and we can often fix it.”

Dr. Yerusalem Lanier continues to amaze us as one of the frontrunners of podiatric medicine, and we celebrate alongside her as she was recently honored as Nashville’s “Three Best Rated” in the field of Podiatry. There is no doubt that she is on the cutting edge of her field and we can’t wait to see what’s next! By: Daryl K. Jones

THE MAKING OF FUTURE SMILES: Pediatric Dentistry with Dr. Judson Wood

“Treating each child as if they are my own.” This is the mantra of pediatric dentist and owner of Associated Children Dentistry, Dr. Judson Wood DDS.

I

t can be argued that dentistry is in the DNA of the doctor, as Dr. Wood is a third-generation dentist. Despite his paternal grandfather and his father both being dentists, it was his mother (who was a dental hygienist) who would ultimately inspire Dr. Wood to choose dentistry as his profession. While most children were choosing which afternoon television program to watch, young Dr. Wood had to choose between a gifted magnet school with no sports and a private school with a football team to start his freshman year of high school. Much to his mother’s delight, Dr. Wood chose to focus on his academics at Hume Fogg Magnet School in downtown Nashville, solidifying his decision to become a doctor or a dentist, rather than to become an athlete. Dr. Wood attended University of Tennessee Knoxville for his undergrad, and Meharry Medical College in Nashville for his dental schooling. He states that the most enjoyable part of being a pediatric dentist is “being able to see the smiles on the kid’s faces from day to day.” Dr. Wood feels a genuine connection to his patients as well as their parents. So much so, that he categorizes the differentiating factor between pediatric dentistry and

other forms of dentistry as being the requirement to “build relationships with not only the patients but their parents as well.” The doctor states in regard to his profession, “It really does help me continue to feel young by relating to them with things such as the newest tennis shoes, sports, video games and different things that take me back to my childhood.” Dr. Wood’s advice for parents looking for a pediatric dentist is to “find a reliable, willing dentist that you and your kids can grow old with.” He makes his patients and their parents feel comfortable by ensuring that they see the same dentist, or at least the same group of dentist, at every appointment, thus fostering trust and lowering anxieties for his clients. Dr. Judson Wood makes it his personal mission to make sure that patients have “no fears” when they enter the office, and leave having had a blast and looking forward to their next appointment with Associated Children’s Dentistry. The treasure chest full of toys for the patients doesn’t hurt, either. For those looking to get into the profession of dentistry, Dr. Wood warns that the most difficult part of his pediatric dentistry is making the parents real-

ize that it is alright to allow the dentist and the child to develop a personal relationship, absent the child’s parents. The doctor says it is similar to trusting your child with their teacher at school. “A lot of parents want to come back for every visit, and we have to explain to them we need to build a rapport,” states Dr. Wood. “The more the parents trust us, the more the kids will, and that makes my job a lot easier,” he explains. He adds a little more wisdom for the prospective dentist by advising that nothing worth having comes easy. “Dentistry is a great profession but it’s not an easy one. you have to be willing to work hard and put in the effort in order to get the reward,” submits Dr. Wood. “Long hours of school, possible residency, and then the same when you start out practicing. The rewards will come, but it takes time.” Dr. Judson Wood and his team at Associated Children’s Dentistry perform an array of treatments from white fillings to extractions, stainless crowns, space maintenance, and also complete rehabilitation via the operating room. Dr. Wood has been proudly serving Tennessee communities for over 11 years and prides himself on being a dentist who is going to “be there.” He truly cares about the people and for that, we celebrate Dr. Judson Wood and Associated Children’s Dentistry. MARK JOHNSON, MD, FACS Why have over 8000 people come to our office, from all but one state and many foreign countries, over the last 18 years? Because Prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma, if properly used, are the most effective strategy to fix a wide variety of problems. ago using only Prolotherapy. Holley had severe neck and back pain after a 40-mph impact on her driver’s side door. Symptoms worsened despite a lengthy course of physical therapy and medication. Because imaging studies were “normal,” she was told: “There is nothing more we can do.” A pain clinic was recommended. Instead, Prolotherapy completely cured all of her symptoms.

What does this treatment do, and what problems does it cure? These agents trigger the body’s most powerful healing response, which strengthens ligaments and tendons, heals meniscus and labrum tears, and repairs cartilage. Some uses are obvious: sports injuries, and trauma caused by accidents or hard work. Some uses are not so obvious at first glance. We have a greater than 90% long term success rate treating joints with “bone on bone” in which Total Joint Replacement is recommended; or when arthroscopic repair of a rotator cuff, labrum, or meniscus is recommended; or in necks and low backs when fusion, epidural steroids, or nerve ablation have been recommended. Dr. Johnson had a prominent surgical practice at St. Thomas West Hospital. He also had a 25 year back problem that landed him in his own hospital for several days. A lumbar fusion was recommended based on MRI findings. But a good friend—a national authority on Prolotherapy—completely cured his pain, spasms, and radiating symptoms 18 years

To cure problems, we must know the structures and process that cause symptoms. Many people try many things, including surgery, yet pain persists in one joint or body-wide. Why? Imaging often fails to locate pain sources, or misdirects treatment. Pain and tenderness represent damage, not inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medication causes additional damage. Widespread pain is often due to a healing system problem that can be corrected. For people in whom “nothing has worked,” we have excellent results, because we correctly identify the sources of pain and successfully treat them using the patient’s own healing system. The key to our success is a correct diagnosis. Dr. Johnson said, “Holley and I determined to find ways to maximize the results of this treatment, which helped both of us so much. We have been far more successful than we anticipated. Our results overall are better than virtually anyone in the country using these same agents, and notably better than those who use stem cells.”

Dr. Johnson is Board Certified in Prolotherapy. He has taught in national medical meetings for over a decade. He presented his diagnostic and treatment strategy to researchers, and a study using his techniques is awaiting funding. Beyond the science, though, Dr. Johnson and Holley strive to take the best possible care of everyone who walks through their door. Healing has been God’s gift to them, a gift they delight in sharing. THE REAL ESTATE

Nashville is nothing close to shy when it comes to being one of the hottest cities to live in the nation! According to current stats it tells us that about 100 people are moving here PER day.

A

lso known as Music City, this is THE PERFECT place to cater to all walks of life: the student trying to figure it out, the family looking to build a solid foundation, the creative artist searching for inspiration, the entrepreneur who wants to flourish, whatever path you’re walking on, this is the city for you. This all-encompassing city has been growing and growing over the past few decades and the ever-changing landscape of real estate has been one to watch. There are many hustling towns including Austin, Texas and Las Vegas is even growing before everyone’s eyes. But Nashville is setting the tone with a growing median housing rate of about 7% from last year.

Now as much as every city may be feeling that influx, there is something to be said about what draws people to Nashville, and it is not just the country music.

ing. Navigating the current market is best met with a great realtor with the experience and up to date knowledge to guide you through.

People are calling Nashville one of the “hottest” places in the U.S. to live, and no, it’s not because of the hot chicken. With COVID bringing everyone into their homes for most of the year, people are now investing in real estate more than ever. Real estate is on the rise, and it is a smart investment, but many wonder, is now the time to buy or sell? Although that question is loaded, as many don’t know when the market will get back to “normal,” many real estate professionals encourage everyone to have good representation whether you are buying or sell-

Based on the 2021 market report from the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, the median price of homes keeps on rising. In fact, from January of 2021 to May, it has raised almost $75,000 over time. Now sitting at an average of $415,000 for a residential home, and the inventory staying at around the same, about 2,900 homes on the market, there could be a house out there for everyone who wants one. But with those 100 people a day moving to Nashville, you have to be ready to put in an offer immediately. There is much to say about urgency at this point.

MARKET IS ON FIRE! The price per square foot in Nashville has raised about 25% since last year, as it becomes more and more a destination spot for people across the country.

It is officially a seller’s market, but that doesn’t mean buying is impossible. You will just be competing with other homebuyers, so get competitive with your realtor and be ready to offer more than the listed price. Yes- you heard that right. More. Everyone wants a good deal, that’s a given. But offering $40,000 or more than the list price is almost crucial to having the offer be accepted. And just because you offer more than the list price, don’t think you are the only one. It must be an attractive offer to the seller too, not just an attractive price. For the sellers of Nashville, this is the time. Not a now or never situation, but it would be a great time to turn that equity

into profit. And just because it is a seller’s market, doesn’t mean that you can just list your home and expect offers to roll in. Every realtor will tell you, staging, staging, staging. It is one of the smartest investments you can make to get your home sold quicker than average. Having your home look top notch is what will get it sold quick and for a good price. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to make some improvements to your house, and then can really pay off in the end. According to Redfin, some of the most return you can get from improvements come from installing quartz counters, turning your home office into a staged den, and installing a tankless water heater. Now it may seem off to improve a house that you won’t even be living in anymore, but the benefits come after the sale every time. The market is on fire right now, if that wasn’t clear already. Every market trend

report will show that everything is on the up and up. Some may benefit from it, and some will have to put some grit and effort in. All in all, the city is booming in all different directions which is no wonder why everyone wants a piece of the pie. With new developments and over twenty schools to choose from, the opportunity for career options and placement can be crossed off your checklist of security and give you a peace of mind. Plus, we can all agree that the lack of income tax is appealing too! Making the decision to become a homeowner is a big deal and we understand that, so we want to ensure we provide you with nothing but the best guidance with our Top 10 Realtors in Nashville, to guide you every step of the way. Be sure to read further so that one of these amazing realtors can make your next big move a success. MN

M

yNashville Magazine is proud to be part of the big reveal of Nashville’s newest addition to the simpliHŌM family, Dawn Doll and the Destination Home Team! Founded in 2018, simpliHŌM has been guided by their motto, “Making Real Estate Simple.” This resonates deep with Dawn and her team. Dawn Doll is excited in her new leadership role, formalizing her years of mentorship of clients and colleagues. As a serial entrepreneur, claiming “networking” as her super-hero ability, this 2020 Greater Nashville Realtors Rising Star Award Winner founded Destination Home Team, based on her personal belief that the journey should not just be simplified, it should be skillfully guided by trusted advisors to achieve the ultimate destination- the home of your dreams! Before moving to Nashville, Dawn owned and operated a successful fitness studio in Minneapolis, MN. Living and working in Nashville now for over 7 years, don’t

at

be surprised if you still see her making a presence within the Nashville fitness scene-- BUT, you certainly won’t miss her in all-things real estate, dedicating her focus and passion to the growth and engagement of her team, network of fellow agents, and, most important, clientele. She puts her actions in her belief, “A person’s most important assets in life are their health and their home!” Dawn loves educating first-time home buyers, rolling out the red carpet in luxury homes and helping people find their homes across all the niche neighborhoods with full concierge service. Moreover, Dawn recently earned her Florida real estate license and plans to expand to sandy beaches of 30A! You just can’t keep this Minnesota girl away from the water! A LONG LINEAGE OF ATTORNEYS AND PUBLIC SERVANTS

Worrick Robinson, IV, comes from a long lineage of attorneys and public servants. Today, nine of his cousins are attorneys.

T

L to R: Bryna Grant, Sarah Pratt, Worrick Robinson, Alycia Adamberger, Lynn Ingram

he Robinson family’s entrance into politics and law began in the family-owned Robinson Grocery Store in the Old Hickory area known as Rayon City. Being the only grocery store in the area, and surviving the great depression and war era, the Robinson’s built close ties with the community by providing food and goods to the community, often extending credit when times were difficult, and families were left to starve. The family later sold the grocery store and started the first funeral home in East Nashville, Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home. Eventually, Worrick’s great uncle, Garner Robinson, was elected Sherriff of Nashville and later as County Trustee. Garner became the first of numerous elected family members, that also included a state senator, state representative, and a public service commissioner, in addition to judges. When asked how and why he became an attorney, Worrick jokingly explains that he didn’t have a choice. In an eight grade civics class, students were assigned the task of writing a paper about their career of choice. When Worrick talked to his father, Worrick III quickly replied that Worrick IV was going to law school to become an attorney. Part of the exercise included interviewing someone in the chosen field, and Worrick’s father drove him

44

downtown to the esteemed Norman Law offices to speak to his cousin, Phillip Robinson. Despite his cousin’s description of the long hours, the preparation, and the demanding commitment to zealous advocacy, Worrick walked away with a career plan. Worrick credits his success to his team of associates, paralegals, and legal assistants, as well as the mentors that made the time to support and assist him over the years. He discusses three mentors that have shaped his career. Aubrey Harwell has served in an advisory role for over thirty years. Worrick credits Harwell for his sage advice, his ethical approach to advocating and his internal drive to be the most prepared advocate in any legal matter. Judge Muriel Robinson was instrumental to introducing a newly licensed Worrick to the Nashville Bar, the judges and to other local dignitaries. Worrick also credits “Judge Muriel” for “throwing him in the fire” early to teach him how to be efficient, quick on his feet and creative in his legal style and argument. Finally, Worrick credits John ML Brown for teaching him trial strategy and critical thinking. Trial strategy is an art and Brown is a master and was willing to break down and discuss legal theory, strategy and respect for the law and the legal process. Worrick has a diverse practice that inMYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

cludes civil and criminal law representation. He has been a part of numerous high-profile cases in and out of Middle Tennessee representing both college and professional athletes, numerous artists, and business executives. When asked if he has a preference as to cases, Worrick is quick to point out that for him, it is about helping people; often representing individuals who are good-hearted and well-intentioned who make a mistake or a bad decision that results in an arrest or a civil lawsuit. Much of Worrick’s practice also includes advising and representing individuals or businesses who find themselves in a crisis and critical decisions must be made during a rapidly evolving, dynamic situation often due to intense media attention and scrutiny. Crisis Management defense is an evolving practice for attorneys and Worrick enjoys the complexity and various moving parts of the cases. Although he is busier than ever, Worrick enjoys the team of attorneys and paralegals who he works closely with each day. His approach to cases has become a collaboration of attorneys and associates. Having at least two sets of eyes on each case is significant, not only for Worrick, but it is more beneficial for the client. Clients often find themselves in a legal arena, where most have never entered. Clients are nervous and anxious and need access to their legal advisor, but even with today’s various forms of communicating, an attorney alone may not be accessible, and having very capable associates, paralegals, and legal assistants is more important than ever. Worrick believes he has found the right team of experienced individuals to provide clients the very best legal representation. Worrick’s family lineage has a long history of serving the public, and his daughter Aubrey will be a first-year law student in the fall of 2022. While he is not yet interested in seeking a political office, he still sees himself continuing the family legacy by serving the public one client at a time. He can be reached at his firm, Robinson, Reagan & Young, PLLC located at 446 James Robertson Parkway, Suite 200, in Nashville and by telephone at 615-726-0900. MN

GREETINGS FROM THE KITCHEN!

IT’S THE BERRIES!

Spring has arrived! Okay, maybe for some of us anyway. When I think of spring, I think of getting ready for longer days, going to farmer’s markets, and enjoying all the great foods that come into season. One in particular that comes to mind is strawberries!

RECIPE Strawberry Crostinis with Orange Mascarpone Cheese and Honey These strawberry crostinis with caramelized onions, orange mascarpone cheese, and honey sure do make for a tasty little treat. Enjoy them with a nice glass of wine or mimosa. 1.

I

remember while growing up, going into the fields and picking as many strawberries we could find, in hopes that we might be able to make a pie or fresh strawberry jam. The only problem was that half the time, by the time we got home, we had eaten most of them. Besides the great flavor we all look forward to every year, here are a few tasty tidbits for you to consider about strawberries: They are packed with essential vitamins, fiber, potassium and phytonutrients. One single serving of strawberries packs more vitamin C than an orange. They are low in sugar, only 8 grams, which makes them a perfect addition to any healthy diet. They are also high in antioxidants - Vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene and lycopene. They are high in potassium, which helps balance electrolytes and maintain healthy blood pressure. Strawberries are rich in fiber, which

is important for heart health. We’ve always been told to eat from the colors of the rainbow, and now we know why. Not only are strawberries good for you, they taste great as well. Use them as a topping for a yogurt and granola parfait, cook them down slightly and make them into a jam, chop them up and put them on salads and in salsas, freeze them and make an amazing smoothie, and, who could forget, add them to tasty desserts? Strawberries have many benefits to consider, making them a perfect addition to your culinary repertoire. With warmer weather, longer days and an abundance of tasty produce heading our way, I say we get outside, enjoy what all nature has to offer, and cook up something spectacular! Grill slices of baguette for approximately 1-2 minutes per side or until toasted. I grilled the baguettes over Royal Oak charcoal. Mix an 8oz. container of Mascarpone cheese with 2 tsp. of orange zest and a tsp. of honey. Adjust to taste. Caramelize a ¼ c. of sweet onions in a hot cast iron skillet using 1 Tbl. of butter and 1 tsp. of olive oil. Stir in 2 c. diced strawberries, cooking 2-3 minutes more, just until the natural sugars start to come out of the berries, and they begin to caramelize.

Once everything is ready, assemble by spreading 1-2 Tbl. of mascarpone cheese mixture per slice, top with the caramelized strawberry and onion mixture, and drizzle with honey. Simple elegance for all to enjoy.

5 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP YOUR HOME ORGANIZED Being a wife mom and a business professional who works crazy hours, it can seem impossible to keep up with staying clean and organized. However I have found these tips and tricks help me stay on top of things throughout the week!

1

2

Use an app to keep track of your grocery shopping list. I personally use an app called “Out of Milk” it tracks my shopping trends, coupons at my local stores, and the best part is my husband and kids also downloaded the app and we can all update the shopping list in real time this way we never have to double back to the store (it’s a real time and money saver). Take 15 mins out every night to clean the following. Do the dishes after dinner, vacuum and sweep (I have a dog so vacuuming needs to be done daily in my house) if you don’t have pets you can do every 3 days or so. And take out the trash. This keeps my home tidy during the week and allows me to just do the detailed cleaning on the weekends!

4

Make sure to clean your bathrooms weekly. I always keep separate cleaning products directly in the bathroom under the sink, this way they are right there when I need them. Wipe down the sink and fixtures, clean the toilet itself (gross, I know sorry, I hate this part) then clean the shower and don’t forget to clean the shower doors or shower curtain! Next sweep and mop the flooring. Laundry also should be done weekly. My laundry is usually done on Friday nights. I don’t know about you, but folding laundry and hanging it up is my least favorite part. I find watching a good tv show or my new obsession listening to a good book helps me get it done in no time, I guess it’s because my mind is somewhere else.

5

Don’t forget to donate or throw away unused items once a month! I clean out my pantry once a month and donate any food that isn’t going to be eaten any time soon, same with my families clothes (I have two growing sons) when the jeans and sneakers get to small it goes into the donation pile and gets dropped off once a month. Same for my clothes as well. I’ve lost a ton of weight and keep losing so I am donating all my clothes that are now too big. My rule is if we haven’t used it in a month and don’t think we will be using it next month it gets donated or thrown out! This way we avoid clutter and hoarding.

The main thing to remember is a little mess never hurt anyone, and family time should always come first, we all aren’t perfect. But if you can try this routine or even add in some to-dos of your own it will cut down on your stress immensely and give you more time on the weekends with your family. AND THAT’S WHATS IMPORTANT! TOP 5 HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS Keeping up with home maintenance, especially as a new homeowner can be a daunting task, and something we often forget about. Follow our Top 5 Home Maintenance Tips that will save you from unnecessary costs and damage to your home. The more you care for your home, the more your home cares for you! Flush your water heater Your water heater is used every day, which means you probably have buildup and sediment inside. All you need is a bucket and common knowledge of your tank; this will greatly help the longevity of your system. Replace batteries in smoke and CO2 detectors The dreaded beep of the smoke detectors. Changing these batteries at least once a year is always the smart choice to avoid those annoying beeps, but also to always make sure your home is safe from unsafe exposure. Look for leaks, everywhere Every faucet you can think of, and even the toilet, should be checked every couple of months for leaks. It is usually just an old washer that needs to be changed, but this simple fix can save you from mold, paint damage, water damage, and wood rot. Vacuum your dryer vents and air ducts It’s safe to say we all want to avoid dryer fires. If your clothes aren’t drying quick or there is a weird smell, it may be time to clean the vent. And the same goes for your air ducts, and while you can clean ducts yourself, it’s best saved for a professional. Check and replace your air filters Want your air conditioning and heating unit to last longer, peek at your air filters every couple of weeks and see if it needs to be changed- especially during cold winters and hot summers when the unit is constantly on!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS UNDER $200? NO WAY! Upgrading your home can be tricky. Especially when you are trying to save a buck or two! Doing it yourself can save you a pretty penny and can turn out to be a fun experience to share with family or friends! Below are 3 easy, and great, home improvements to try. Let us know your favorite or if you try one! PLANT SOME GREENS

ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSET

CABINET REBIRTH

Every chance you get, get green! Seeds and dirt only cost about $20, for everything! This is an easy way to make your yard a bit more pleasant to the eye and could be quite relaxing to do on the weekends or in your spare time. Either plant the greens straight into the ground or purchase a couple of pots and planters to place in a line. It might be time consuming but get your family to join in and the project will be done in no time!

The dreaded messy closet. We all avoid it, but this season is the perfect time to get it out of the way! Starting with hanging all the clothes you know belong on a hanger. Then, travel to the nearest department store (even Walmart!) and purchase a Vertical Closet Organizer. They can be quite different price points, but the most you should spend would be around $120. Install the organizer to the middle of your closet, and BAM!, storage space at your fingertips.

If you know your bathroom or kitchen is a bit outdated, but don’t want to spend an arm and leg for new cabinetry, buy some paint and a sanding block. It is time to repaint and reinvent your cabinets. Make sure that you unscrew the cabinets off before you start painting or buffing! The best way to put color into your cabinets is by using Gel Stain which is shiny but will stick better than paint. The required materials will run you around $75 total, including the Gel Stain! Brand new room in 3..2….1.
