TOP 10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT

ERIC CHURCH

Since Eric Church entered the scene with his first single, “How ‘Bout You,” he has captivated country music lovers everywhere. With everyday hits like: “Drink in My Hand,” “Springsteen,” and “Hell of A View,” nine studio albums later and he is still surprising fans with incredible songwriting and earth-shaking vocals.

O

ver the years, he has built a reputation for being a hardcore touring artist and rocking performer, leading to winning the title of 2020’s Entertainer of the Year. Known for being the “rebel” of country, he is proving to fans that he is much more than that. With his outlaw tendencies and his bad boy persona, people may think they know everything they need to about Eric Church. While Eric prefers to keep everything low profile, his mysterious nature isn’t that hard to shake because we found 10 things you might not know about this country super star.

1

ERIC IS HIS MIDDLE NAME

Eric Church, the name truly rolls off the tongue. A name for a true country Rockstar, but actually- Eric was born Kenneth Eric Church. He later decided that knocking off the Kenneth would prove to be a stronger artist name. Although, he was named after his father and he loves his name, for country, keeping it simple just seemed to work better. A simple little fact about Eric, but definitely something we can’t imagine being any different!

Eric was born Kenneth Eric Church

2

THE SIGNATURE SUNGLASSES & HAT LOOK

We know it well, Eric’s aviators and ballcap. His signature, trademark look. He is one of the coolest stars in country because you can always expect the whole shebang any time he is on stage. But it isn’t just because he is cooler than all of us, it is actually because he wears contacts, and the bright lights on stage would dry them out and they’d fall out. He would be performing blind- Literally! Someone suggested to him that glasses would be a good option to combat the issue, and lo and behold, the Eric Church look was born. Because we want him to be able to see!

We know it well, Eric’s aviators and ballcap. His signature, trademark look.

3

A HIGH SCHOOL JOCK?!

We can’t entirely picture it, can we? Eric Church being any cooler than he is right now?! Well, get ready. Eric was quite the high school athlete and played in any sport he could. Although he has the image of being an outsider that stays away from the crowd, he was most certainly in the midst of any and every sport. He says that basketball was where he shined, but he also loved to play baseball, football, and even a short stint with golf. He told Greensboro.com that he joined the golf team when he realized that anyone on the team got to leave school at 10am for matches and didn’t have to be at school all day. And there it is, the cool guy getting even cooler.

4

HE WAS FIRED FROM A RASCAL FLATT’S TOUR

Taking it back to early on in his career: On one of his first tours, Eric opened for Rascal Flatts on their Me & My Gang Tour of 2006. What would seem like the most powerful combination of country music actually ended quite sour. Eric’s dynamic energy and performance style was “too loud” and “too long” for the tour leaders and he was eventually kicked off the tour. After Flatts asking quite a few times for them to keep it down and stay his allotted time slot, and time after time of Eric just not listening, they cut the cord. It isn’t clear whether Eric has held a grudge, but we’ll just leave that open to interpretation.

5

ERIC KEEPS A VERY SPECIAL LIST ONSTAGE WITH HIM

Keeping it nice and simple here: Eric carries a list of people that have held him back in his career with him onstage every night. He openly admits that he is 100% the type to hold longstanding grudges and admires others that do, too. Can we guess who might be at the top of that list… maybe Rascal Flatts, but we will never know for sure. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a list of people that have gotten in the way of your career, and literally still make it to the top of country music history?

6

HE’S AN ADVOCATE OF MARIJUANA

As country can be an all-encompassing genre filled with people from all over the country and from all walks of life, one attribute country is known for is being conservative. Although we had our fair share of pro-cannabis artists over the years, like Willie Nelson, Eric Church has become well known for loving his cannabis. Even to a point that it was poked fun of during the ACM awards, as Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan joked that his dressing room looked like the inside of a dispensary. He was also called the modern-day Willie Nelson, but we don’t think anyone tops Willie!

He was also called the modern-day Willie Nelson, but we don’t think anyone tops Willie!

7

HIS FAMOUS SONG SPRINGSTEEN WASN’T INSPIRED BY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

We all know and love his hit single Springsteen, as it tells the love story between a couple in the middle of a concert hall. The interesting part to this high powered, yet soft spoken song is that it wasn’t based on a Bruce Springsteen show at all. Eric Church shares that he went to a concert when he was younger with a girl, and to this day, when he hears the artist, it is the soundtrack to the girl. He said, “I never think about her any other time, except when that song is on.” And as it surprises us that it isn’t based off Bruce Springsteen, Eric shares that he still has a lot of respect for him as an artist. MYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

8

HIS NICKNAME: THE CHIEF

He is often revered as the Chief by media and his fans, and it seems obvious that this nickname stems from his Police Chief, signature aviators and hat look. And while it is true, Eric holds this nickname close to his heart as he shares the namesake with his grandfather, who was the chief of police in North Carolina, where he is from.

Eric holds this nickname close to his heart as he shares the namesake with his grandfather

9

ERIC HAS A MARKETING DEGREE

In his early twenties, Eric promised his father that he would finish college if his dad would agree to fund his dreams for the following 6 months in Nashville. Apparently, it was a done deal, because Eric earned his degree at Appalachia State University with a Marketing Degree before moving to the heart of Nashville, where he eventually signed with Sony.

10

ERIC AND HIS WIFE ARE EXTREMELY CHARITABLE

His tough guy persona is known very well, but his soft side, he definitely likes to keep close to his chest. He and his wife founded a charity called Chief Cares in early 2013 and have since helped underprivileged families and children throughout the entire state of Tennessee and Eric’s home of North Carolina. Reaching across the globe, the charity has even helped to fund no kill animal shelters, and aided orphans in Nepal. An incredibly well-rounded artist with a spark of mystery, Eric Church is known for being an enigma. We hope this opened the door to a little more information about the famous artist. We celebrate with him for his latest trilogy album Heart & Soul. Eric is on tour yet again for the Gather Again Tour, visiting all over the country. Keep up with Eric Church’s latest at www.ericchurch.com

We hope this opened the door to a little more information about the famous artist. 9

NIGHTLIFE IN NASHVILLE Nashville is chocked full of sights and sounds, places to explore, and restaurants to devour local wonders. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or just moved here, sometimes we run out of things to do in this eclectic city. Don’t worry, that is what MYNASHVILLE is here for! Take a sneak peek into some of Nashville’s hidden treasures, or some of your new favorites!

FOR MUSIC

BBQ is an American staple, but also a Tennessee staple! Central BBQ, located near Capitol View, has become a fan favorite after only 6 short months of opening. Originally a Memphis born restaurant, Central BBQ has made its way to Nashville, and we are loving it! If you’re here for the smoke, then they are here for you! From ribs to pulled pork, to the best brisket you’ve tried, Central BBQ aims to please. Discover your smokey possibilities today!

Although this spot is known for their creeper salsa, Nada Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is a local’s best friend, located right off Broadway. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable enough to down a couple of cocktails and probably order the entire appetizer menu, but that’s not a bad thing! Their tacos are out of this world, as well as their cocktail menu! They can mix you anything you’d like; however, the restaurant’s favorite is their Summertime Sabbatical, a margarita with hints of watermelon, cucumber and springtime wonder! Check them out today, de nada!

EXIT/IN is a local’s favorite, located near Elliston Place. This is definitely the place for rockers, as most of the music played here is live and loud. EXIT/IN has been around since 1971 and still stands as one of the best open mic night and live music venues in the city. This “slice of history” venue has hosted musicians such as Etta James, Johnny Cash, REM, and Billy Joel, just to name a few. EXIT/IN supports local musicians and some of the greatest musicians of all time, as they say they are, “dedicated to preservation of the past.” Get your creative music juices flowing at EXIT/IN tonight!

BROADWAY DEFINED Welcome to the town that lights up like a Christmas tree every day of the week! The city that makes dreams come true! You put on your coolest country garb (is Rhinestone Cowboy still a thing?) and hit the town!

I

t really doesn’t matter where you go on Broadway, it seems that every place is packed with people having fun. Music is coming out of every nook and cranny and every place feels like it’s flirting with you to come on in! But, is there more to this than meets the eye? Let’s break down Nashville’s iconic Broadway strip.   Broadway is the well-known strip in downtown Nashville. The entertainment district that is known far and wide for its live country music and honky tonk bars. But it also has some pretty cool history, retail shops and restaurants that you won’t want to miss!   Wikipedia gives us a bit of its history stating, “Originally named Broad Street, the eastern end of Broadway ended at the shipping docks on the Cumberland River. It was one of the first roads to run east-west in Nashville, and the first public high school in the city was built on the road in 1875. It eventually became a street lined with hardware stores, feed stores, and various other businesses and had a section known as “Auto Row” at the beginning of the 20th century due to large numbers of car dealers and tire and auto shops. A new post office – now the First Center for the Visual Performing Arts – was built next to Union Station on Broadway by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression.”   Broadway has quite the history and, in fact, if that is something that interests you, you may want to check out Christ Church, established in 1949. Its gothic architecture is worth a peak! Another must see stop is the Union Station Hotel which began as a train station back in the 19th century. The lobby has beautiful 100-year-old stained glass and vaulted ceilings reaching 65ft high. The interior is decorated with original art honoring Nashville’s music history. Gorgeous art deco that you won’t want to miss!   Ready to hit some fun stops? Check out Nashville Underground! “Boasting

Broadway is the well-known strip in downtown Nashville. The entertainment district that is known far and wide for its live country music and honky tonk bars. the highest and largest double deck rooftop on Broadway. Nashville Underground delivers an intimate authentic Nashville experience where you can Drink, Taste, and Hear Nashville.” This place is crazy big! 40,000-square-ft of honky tonk and just up from the beautiful Cumberland River. They have four floors filled with bars, food, live music and even a mechanical bull to try your luck on! In fact, “Management claims the rooftop bar is the highest in the city.” Oh, they also claim to have the coldest beer on tap in Nashville at 29 degrees. (Gotta try that!)   Looking to try some “Moonshine” on your visit? Then Bootleggers Inn is where you want to go at 207 Broadway. They are said to be the only bar in Nashville to still serve it! They also have some incredible live music and two floors of nonstop fun.   One of Broadways newest honky tonks is Jason Aldean’s Kitchen and Rooftop Bar at 307 Broadway. I’m sure y’all know who Jason is, but you really need to check out his new venue which just opened in 2018. The main restaurant is one of a kind, featuring a large bar with a 1961 4020 John Deere Tractor as a tribute to his number one song “My Big Green Tractor.” The food is what one MYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

would expect, a great mix of his Southern favorites including some of his mommas own peach cobbler to tickle your taste buds! They have the largest rooftop patio and the party never stops! (I’m sure that’s no surprise!) If you’re a Jason Aldean fan, then get on over there and grab yourself some merchandise, a signature cocktail and dance the night away to the panoramic views of Broadway! Oh, and get a selfie while your there!   Lastly, if you’re a sports fan, you may want to head on over to Bridgestone Arena, home of The Nashville Predators. The arena hosts everything from sporting events, to the CMA’s Awards to incredible concerts. It’s also home to The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.   Broadway is and always has been an icon of ‘The Music City.’ I hope this gives you a few tidbits that maybe you wouldn’t have been privy to while sightseeing on your own. The point is, there is not a boring spot along this strip. So, pull up your cowboy boots, tip your hat and enjoy a good ‘ole southern time! MN   Y’all come back now, ya’hear! PUB CRAWLING! Going on a bar crawl is the best! You get to hang out with your friends, get a little exercise, and best of all get your drink on!

A

lthough if you have only participated in them before it can be a little more of a challenge to plan one for yourself. So, here are some things to keep in mind to plan the best bar crawl your friends, coworkers, and acquaintances have ever been on.

First things first: You must set up a route! There are a few things to keep in mind, firstly, how many bars you want to stop at. We recommend 4-6, as it gives you enough places to stop at, but not too many so that you are exhausted at the end of the night. Also, make sure to keep all the bars in close proximity; you’re doing this to visit bars, not to go on a hike. Although, if you absolutely must go across town, make sure that the bars are close to public transportation. Lastly, you will want to consider the type of group you are planning this for. Think of the kinds of bars they would prefer, some groups want to visit a good ole dive bar, while others want to spend their night in high-end lounges. Also, don’t choose bars that are going to have high wait times or that you might not be able to get into.

bar all night. You can try punch cards, scavenger hunts or some type of reward or prize system. Anything will work as long as you and the group will enjoy it. One thing you should definitely not forget is food! Everyone will need to fuel up if they want to last the whole night. Try and get something to eat about half way through. You can either take a break and head to a nearby food joint, or you can order food at one of your stops. Just make sure to plan ahead, and factor it in to your total time.

Try and get something to eat about half way through. You can either take a break and head to a nearby food joint, or you can order food at one of your stops.

Next, make sure that you give the bars on your route a heads up, and let them know the date, approximate time and amount of people to expect. This is just the right thing to do; this way the bar will know to be ready for a group and prepare for it. There is nothing worse that planning out a whole night to find that the bar is closed for an event or way understaffed for a large group. The bars on the route will really appreciate it, and they may even let you use a special area of the bar or give you some group discounts. Now, you can plan some fun for your group! If your group is the kind that loves to have a theme- now is the time to pick it out. Choose something that everyone can relate to, so that everyone will dress up and participate. You should also think about adding some incentives, so people are motivated to go to the next bar instead of giving up and staying at the same

Don’t forget to coordinate everyone. Social media is a great way to do this; you can make a group for your bar crawl! This will keep everyone up to date, so no one forgets the date or time, and it will keep communication open especially for any last-minute changes. Also, this is a great way for everyone to post their pictures, and any other fun experiences from the night. These easy suggestions will help you plan the best bar crawl your group has ever been on. So make sure to stay safe, have fun, and let loose! MN

Keep it simple with the basic three, cleansing, toning and moisturizing. (Don’t forget to hydrate as well to rid the body of toxins and encourage a radiant glow!) Skin care doesn’t have to be expensive either! I’m into natural and clean skincare and after a visit to my holistic esthetician I learned that Honey was a great replacement for expensive face washes! What a treat! It feels like a

spa every time I use it and my skin is beyond soft! In fact honey is not only super nourishing and hydrating but it’s also full of probiotics, is antibacterial and incredibly healing. I use an organic raw honey that has a bit of honeycomb in it, great for exfoliation! I also use a home made toner of essential oil of Frankincense and distilled water. Frankincense has been used for centuries on the skin and is hailed as a powerful anti-aging essential oil. It is said to slow signs of aging amongst many other things. It’s been amazing for me. Lastly, I swear my castor Oil on my face and body. It does not clog pores and it’s a packed with much needed essential fatty acids our skin needs and penetrates deeply hydrating the skin like nothing I have ever tried before! One little secret to remember when using castor oil is that less is more! Also,  be sure to massage it into your skin in a circular motion. Trust me, your skin will glow! (I also mix in various essential oils depending on what I feel my skin is in need of at the time. Lavender, rose, orange, clary sage, frankincense, ginger etc.)  Feel free to experiment and see what works best for you!  **The most amazing and purest essential oils I’ve discovered and used personally (Also used in top notch spa’s around the world) are by world renowned artisan Trygvè Harris and founder of Enfleurage. Enfleurage is New York’s first and only store specializing in essential oils and incense from all around the planet. They import directly from farms and stills, bringing in high quality, fresh and sparkling, essential oils from 6 continents. Nothing is added to their oils and hydrosols. No preservatives, no isolates, no ‘enhancers’, no alcohol (except for a few alcohol tinctures.) They also have all pure botanical perfumes available, truly one of a kind!  They are pure heaven! “When you breathe in Enfleurage Essential Oil, you are breathing in its soul. Purely.”  They also ship worldwide, go to www. Enfleurage.com.  You can also visit their distillery at www.enfleurage.me! STRETCHING & FLEXIBILITY TIPS It’s not enough to build muscle and achieve aerobic fitness. You need to think about flexibility, too. Stretching can help.

Y

ou may think of stretching as something performed only by runners or gymnasts. But we all need to stretch in order to protect our mobility and independence. A lot of people don’t understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily. Why stretching is important Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage. For example, sitting in a chair all day results in tight hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way, which inhibits walking. Likewise, when tight muscles are suddenly called on for a strenuous activity that stretches them, such as playing tennis, they may become damaged from suddenly being stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support the joints, which can lead to joint injury.

Find a physical therapist (your local directory is a good place to start) who can assess your muscle strength and tailor a stretching program to fit your needs. If you have chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or arthritis, you’ll want to clear a new stretching regimen with your doctor before you start. The cumulative effect of stretching Stretching once today won’t magically give you perfect flexibility. You’ll need to do it over time and remain committed to the process. It may have taken you many months to get tight muscles, so you’re not going to be perfectly flexible after one or two sessions. It takes weeks to months to get flexible, and you’ll have to continue working on it to maintain it. A hamstring stretch will keep the muscles in the back of your thigh flexible. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you. Slide your hands down your legs until you feel a burning sensation. Hold for 30 seconds, then slowly return to a sitting position.

Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean, and flexible, and this means that exertion won’t put too much force on the muscle itself. Healthy muscles also help a person with balance problems to avoid falls. Where to start With a body full of muscles, the idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming. But you don’t have to stretch every muscle you have. The areas critical for mobility are in your lower extremities: your calves, your hamstrings, your hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh. Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also beneficial. Aim for a program of daily stretches or at least three or four times per week.

Proper execution We used to believe that stretching was necessary to warm up the muscles and prepare them for activity. However, mounting research has shown that stretching the muscles before they’re warmed up can actually hurt them. When everything is cold, the fibers aren’t prepared and may be damaged. If you exercise first, you’ll get blood flow to the area, and that makes the tissue more pliable and amenable to change. All it takes to warm up the muscles before stretching is five to 10 minutes of light activity, such as a quick walk. You can also stretch after an aerobic or weight-training workout. Hold a stretch for 30 seconds. Don’t bounce, which can cause injury. You’ll feel tension during a stretch, but you should not feel pain. If you do, there may be an injury or damage in the tissue. Stop stretching that muscle and talk to your Trainer or Doctor. MN

5 TIPS TO GET

RID OF CELLULITE Time to talk about something we all hate, cellulite. One of the most frustrating things a woman can deal with. It seems to appear out of nowhere. Right? Like one day, you are rocking the booty shorts feeling cute next thing, you are trying to make an extra large men’s t shirt look cute at the pool to cover our cellulite areas.

F

rom my personal experience, if I don’t drink enough water then I end up with cellulite on my triceps and under my buttocks which is two very common areas for women, because women tend to store fat in triceps (back of the arm), low belly, hamstrings (back of legs) as well as our hips. No matter how much cardio you do and how much spinach you eat... it still sticks with you. Has that ever happened to you? That’s because you need to switch to these tips. So what is cellulite!? It is when the fat cells congregate under the skin and create a dimple-like appearance above the skin. Some cellulite is just in our genes but most of it can be treated by these following tips.

1

STAY HYDRATED: If you don’t drink enough water, you will end up holding more water which can make your cellulite look worse. Staying hydrated will keep things flowing and will be able to help the appearance of cellulite. So try to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. I personally try drinking a full gallon a day, especially if I eat bad.

2

CLEAN UP YOUR EATING! Having bad eating habits will never do us any good. Its ok to have your cheat meal or cheat day but on a normal basis try getting at least 3 good meals of good, clean whole foods. I recommend a lot of greens, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins to keep your body good on the inside and out.

20

MYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

3

LIFT WEIGHTS: When you lift, your muscles will grow and help tighten the skin, which will help diminish the appearance of cellulite. Don’t be scared to go heavy, the heavier the better but always remember good form over all! I do recommend to mix of isolation and compound movements to really get all areas and push yourself.

4

FOAM ROLL/MASSAGE/ DRY BRUSH: Working on breaking down that hard tissue and flushing your system with water right after will help get the toxins out so you will get your smooth appearance back. I recommend to foam roll after your workout and massage cellulite areas in the shower with warm water. Be sure to drink water after this to flush out the toxins.

5

ESSENTIAL OILS: This is something I actually just decided to try out. I got sick of buying all the creams that have a bunch of chemicals in them. So I took the natural route and decided to order grapefruit, rosemary, fennel and lemongrass. I mix them together with a little coconut oil and massage in, where it is needed.

Try these tips for at least 2 weeks and let me see those before and after pictures. MV

BROTOX: A MEN’S GUIDE TO BOTOX The talk of the town is that “Brotox” is what’s trending. Wait what? Yes, you read that right. Brotox is the popular term used for botox treatment in men!

E

VERYONE deserves to look good AND feel good – so let’s normalize it and stop pretending we don’t care about looking younger Boys! Yes, this means that you can have healthy and rejuvenated skin, not just your lady. Did you know that botox is the top leading choice for non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the U.S? And did you know that botox is more than just a procedure for wrinkles? It can also help if you suffer from any of the following health conditions such as excessive sweating, neck spasms, or lazy eyes. And I know what you’re probably thinking. Is Botox safe? YES! And it doesn’t have to look unnatural! This procedure is completely safe (when administered by a professional doctor and in small doses) and it’s super quick and most patients don’t even require any numbing treatments, but if you need it, it’s there! For the treatment, a botulinum toxin is injected into the facial muscles in the area that needs assistance. What this does is that it allows for the chemical to send signals to the nervous system and tells the muscles to relax-which is what helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and helps us to look younger. And we get it. We understand how intimidating it can feel to choose whether Botox would be right for you so we have a few more things for you to consider in terms of your own skin care goals and needs to help make that decision a little bit easier! Some common areas of the face where men get Botox are around the mouth (say

goodbye to laugh lines), between the eyebrows (eliminate frown lines), and in the forehead (rid of creases.) After the procedure, be prepared for some minor side effects. You may have some bruising, swelling, and mild pain within the area that typically lasts about one to four days after the injection. The doctor may also recommend avoiding intense physical activity or refraining from alcohol for at least a day. Botox will usually last about three to six months before you start seeing the appearance of your wrinkles so be sure you do your research on a reputable professional and clinic- because looking & feeling good will never go out of style. A LONG LINEAGE OF ATTORNEYS AND PUBLIC SERVANTS

Worrick Robinson, IV, comes from a long lineage of attorneys and public servants. Today, nine of his cousins are attorneys.

T

L to R: Bryna Grant, Sarah Pratt, Worrick Robinson, Alycia Adamberger, Lynn Ingram

he Robinson family’s entrance into politics and law began in the family-owned Robinson Grocery Store in the Old Hickory area known as Rayon City. Being the only grocery store in the area, and surviving the great depression and war era, the Robinson’s built close ties with the community by providing food and goods to the community, often extending credit when times were difficult, and families were left to starve. The family later sold the grocery store and started the first funeral home in East Nashville, Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home. Eventually, Worrick’s great uncle, Garner Robinson, was elected Sherriff of Nashville and later as County Trustee. Garner became the first of numerous elected family members, that also included a state senator, state representative, and a public service commissioner, in addition to judges. When asked how and why he became an attorney, Worrick jokingly explains that he didn’t have a choice. In an eight grade civics class, students were assigned the task of writing a paper about their career of choice. When Worrick talked to his father, Worrick III quickly replied that Worrick IV was going to law school to become an attorney. Part of the exercise included interviewing someone in the chosen field, and Worrick’s father drove him

32

downtown to the esteemed Norman Law offices to speak to his cousin, Phillip Robinson. Despite his cousin’s description of the long hours, the preparation, and the demanding commitment to zealous advocacy, Worrick walked away with a career plan. Worrick credits his success to his team of associates, paralegals, and legal assistants, as well as the mentors that made the time to support and assist him over the years. He discusses three mentors that have shaped his career. Aubrey Harwell has served in an advisory role for over thirty years. Worrick credits Harwell for his sage advice, his ethical approach to advocating and his internal drive to be the most prepared advocate in any legal matter. Judge Muriel Robinson was instrumental to introducing a newly licensed Worrick to the Nashville Bar, the judges and to other local dignitaries. Worrick also credits “Judge Muriel” for “throwing him in the fire” early to teach him how to be efficient, quick on his feet and creative in his legal style and argument. Finally, Worrick credits John ML Brown for teaching him trial strategy and critical thinking. Trial strategy is an art and Brown is a master and was willing to break down and discuss legal theory, strategy and respect for the law and the legal process. Worrick has a diverse practice that inMYNASHVILLE MAGAZINE • WWW.MYNASHVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

cludes civil and criminal law representation. He has been a part of numerous high-profile cases in and out of Middle Tennessee representing both college and professional athletes, numerous artists, and business executives. When asked if he has a preference as to cases, Worrick is quick to point out that for him, it is about helping people; often representing individuals who are good-hearted and well-intentioned who make a mistake or a bad decision that results in an arrest or a civil lawsuit. Much of Worrick’s practice also includes advising and representing individuals or businesses who find themselves in a crisis and critical decisions must be made during a rapidly evolving, dynamic situation often due to intense media attention and scrutiny. Crisis Management defense is an evolving practice for attorneys and Worrick enjoys the complexity and various moving parts of the cases. Although he is busier than ever, Worrick enjoys the team of attorneys and paralegals who he works closely with each day. His approach to cases has become a collaboration of attorneys and associates. Having at least two sets of eyes on each case is significant, not only for Worrick, but it is more beneficial for the client. Clients often find themselves in a legal arena, where most have never entered. Clients are nervous and anxious and need access to their legal advisor, but even with today’s various forms of communicating, an attorney alone may not be accessible, and having very capable associates, paralegals, and legal assistants is more important than ever. Worrick believes he has found the right team of experienced individuals to provide clients the very best legal representation. Worrick’s family lineage has a long history of serving the public, and his daughter Aubrey will be a first-year law student in the fall of 2022. While he is not yet interested in seeking a political office, he still sees himself continuing the family legacy by serving the public one client at a time. He can be reached at his firm, Robinson, Reagan & Young, PLLC located at 446 James Robertson Parkway, Suite 200, in Nashville and by telephone at 615-726-0900. MN

POLSINELLI PC

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS IN NASHVILLE Since entering the Nashville market five years ago, national business law firm Polsinelli—noted as an industry leader in health care—has solidified its long-term commitment to expanding its footprint in the Southeast.

B

ut on a recent visit to Polsinelli’s Commerce Street office, it became apparent that while the firm’s talent is nationally renowned, its spirit is deeply rooted in Nashville. The full service law firm has approximately 900 attorneys and has been serving clients across the United States for over 50 years. Polsinelli’s engagement with clients does not stop at the borders. Striving to align legal services to clients’ business goals is at the forefront of their mission. Providing the best client service possible helped attract experienced attorneys locally, nationally, and globally. Providing much more than legal needs, Polsinelli has strategically distinguished themselves as a one-stop-shop for businesses and individuals. Founded in April of 2015, Polsinelli’s Nashville office launched to better serve local clients and meet the growing demand for legal services in the Southeast. We had the opportunity to peak through the doors of Polsinelli’s Nashville office, and get to know five of their leading lawyers, and five of our Top 100 Lawyers in Nashville: John Peterson, Kolin Holladay, David King, Bobby Guy, and Meri Gordon.

David King agree, the culture that they have built together, as well as directly with their clients, is what initially drew them to Polsinelli. David, who has practiced for over 35 years but is the newest on the team, shares, “This firm is very intentional about culture, and that was exactly what I was looking for.” Kolin adds, “It’s a small, local firm culture, with large firm resources… One of the first things Bobby said to me after joining the team was, ‘Welcome Home to Polsinelli.’” Office Managing Partner John Peterson explained that as Polsinelli has expanded, they have identified individuals who have strong local ties to the clients they service and who aren’t shy about collaborating with each other. Over the years, Polsinelli’s footprint has grown nationally, and their lawyers’ reach has grown with it. John, who focuses his practice on various commercial litigation matters, says, “Polsinelli gave me the opportunity to have all the resources necessary to provide full services to my clients, not just locally but anywhere in the country, in the best possible way.”

The firm’s office, located in downtown Nashville, close to great restaurants and live music venues, is like a breath of fresh air. The office is as open concept as any office I’ve seen, set with conference rooms and seating areas, giving team and client meetings an inviting feel where creativity can flow.

What truly sets Polsinelli apart is the plethora of practices and industry focuses you find in one place. Polsinelli’s main areas of focus in Nashville are healthcare, commercial litigation, corporate transactions, and real estate, among much more. The firm’s deep bench of talent is versatile and stretches across multiple sectors of the economy, making Polsinelli a law firm without walls and able to solve a variety of complex business challenges.

When first meeting this team, you are immediately struck with their jovial, collegial energy. It is evident that these lawyers spend much time collaborating in and outside of the office, as they have a natural way of making you feel like a part of the team. Kolin Holladay and

With a particular focus on the health care community, Polsinelli’s Nashville office grounded itself in the epicenter of healthcare providers, aiming to be a trusted resource to their needs, big or small, locally, nationally, or internationally. Bobby Guy, David King, Kolin Holladay, and

Meri Gordon have been instrumental on the healthcare front, as the firm has frequently earned accolades, recognized as being at the top of its class. Polsinelli was included on the 2019 Best Lawyers® “Best Law Firms” list by U.S. News & World Report. The firm also received 11 Tier One practice rankings and 21 additional national practice rankings. Additionally, the firm was recognized as “Law Firm of the Year” for Health Care in 2018’s “Best Law Firms” for the second time in four years. Bobby adds, “We are the only AmLaw 100 firm with a top healthcare ranking, full national footprint, and focus on the midmarket.” The members of this all-star Polsinelli Nashville team have established themselves as national leaders in addressing key challenges facing the healthcare industry, but it’s ties to the Nashville business community are still strong. Kolin, a noted health care M&A dealmaker, also served as president of the Associate for Corporate Growth (ACG) Tennessee chapter, honored as “Chapter of the Year” for 2019. Their true sense of community was evident throughout my visit, and I left their office feeling as though I joined the team. It’s unlike any law firm I have witnessed and gotten to know, so I understand why so many clients choose Polsinelli and continue to trust their unceasing capabilities. Stay connected with Polsinelli! ATTORNEY MICHAEL PONCE Attorney, Michael Ponce, is passionate about helping people, and, more so, in making a difference right away with his clients. What started as a one-person general practice firm in 1994 has blossomed into a 30+ bilingual law firm known for representing people who have been injured or wronged.

P

once Law handles cases in employment law, social security disability, workers compensation, vehicle accident injuries, wrongful death cases, class action lawsuits against manufacturers and many other types of injury law cases. Michael and the firm have always helped out in the community, but this year, they have taken it to new heights. Michael has always been a go-getter, completing his MBA before starting law school. He received his law degree with honors from Tulane University, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In his third year of law school, his professor was somewhat of a mentor to him, and inspired him to start his own practice rather than work for a firm after graduating. Already a professional in the business world, he drew up a business plan and launched his firm a couple months after passing the bar exam. As the owner of Ponce Law, Michael takes pride in hiring great people who aim to stand up for the little guy and, more importantly, people who treat people with respect. When you are working with people who are hurting, it is important to be that calming presence that helps them get their life back together. Sometimes, it means calling about medical bills for a client, arranging transportation, or just being able to answer questions. Over the

years, Michael continues to improve how the firm interacts with clients and helps them to resolve their legal issues. For many people, it is the first time they have ever spoken to a law firm, and some tend to feel overwhelmed. But Ponce Law’s motto is to ensure clients know they are in the right place and will be cared for. Ponce Law is a contingency based practice, which means that clients don’t have to pay for their legal services up front. Ponce Law only collects a fee out of the settlement for the client. So essentially, if they don’t win, they don’t get paid. This takes the financial burden off the clients, and, this means the firm does not take on frivolous cases. Through the years, the firm has grown, and so have the accolades for the firm. In 2017, Ponce Law became the first law firm in Nashville to receive the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethical Commerce. This year the firm was awarded the Gold Award from Martindale Hubble for Client Satisfaction. Ponce Law has also been voted Best of Nashville in various years as well. Ponce Law is well respected, and most clients come from referrals from previous clients. This speaks to the character of the firm even more than awards. Along with ensuring client needs are met and exceeded, Ponce Law also has a

passion for being involved in the community. In the spring, Ponce Law hosted the Outstanding Teacher Contest where teachers were nominated throughout the Middle Tennessee area and then voted on via email. The top two received checks for themselves and their schools. And this November, Ponce Law is sponsoring a tribute called “Thank a Veteran,” where people were able to give a shout out to a veteran they know and thank them for their service. On November 20th, four of the veterans were chosen at random and given $500 each. At Ponce Law where they truly shine is how they treat each other. The firm aims to generate a family friendly atmosphere where all feel included. Employees and their families go to the Nashville Sounds games, the Nashville Zoo, bowling and even volunteer together at the Nashville Rescue Mission. There are monthly birthday luncheons with the whole staff in attendance, and every employee receives birthday presents and birthday cake. There are also monthly learning sessions for each department to keep up with the latest developments, so that employees can grow with the company. According to one of the attorneys at the firm, “Michael is an amazing leader and his team loves working for him. He is in the office every day and takes a hands-on approach. Michael is a great teammate and advocate for his clients and is truly deserving of being honored as a top attorney.” Employees, partners, and clients alike can all agree that Michael has your best interest in mind and will help you to get the results you deserve! SO, YOU WANT TO BE A REAL ESTATE AGENT?

Story By: Lilly Ruiz

Interested in being a realtor? Welcome to the club! I’m sure you’ve heard great things, that it’s an easy way to make big bucks and make your mark!

W

ell, not to burst your bubble, but its way more than that! Being a realtor is going to take hustle and, more importantly, patience. Before even considering being a real estate agent, you need to learn as much as possible about the business! Did you know that over 90% of the new agents quit within the 1st year? Why do you think that is? It might seem like all easy money and glamourous on TV, but in reality, it’s everything but! Firstly, you must be willing and able to hustle and grind. You might be used to long weeks already, but have you put in 60+ hours a week, plus working while you’re at home? That means giving up a lot of family time. It means working every single day and many late nights. Basically, it means working your butt off and being happy to do so! It is all about putting in the work in the beginning and maintaining that stamina.

forth, showings, 3-5 hours at open houses, and the list goes on and on. Really is a long list!! Know that the job is not about you. It is about consistently being willing to help others and put your needs aside for a better purpose. Aim to go home learning something new every day and wanting to learn because the passion runs so deep. If not, this business just isn’t for you! Unfortunately, many people get into real estate just for the paycheck and aren’t willing to work hard, care about the clients they have, or have the knowledge to do this for the long haul. This business just shouldn’t be about the money, it should be about the commitment to the client, and the care it takes to carry out a deal. You are helping someone find the home of their dreams, and that’s a big deal! The more you are focused on the check

Because, no- you won’t just get your license and become rich. It’s not as easy as social media or your TV can make it seem. To truly get your career in real estate started, you will have to have some money put aside. Being a Realtor is going to be expensive. It is your business. If you will take away anything from reading this article, it would be: This is YOUR business, Treat it as one!! You will be working for yourself! Everything you do, money you make, houses you sell, it is all YOUR hard work going into it. So, the minute you don’t have a house to sell or a client to find a home for, your money will be spent and not made. Remember to try and stay busy! Getting your license is the easiest part, but not enough! Real estate school won’t teach you what to expect after you get the license, it is not even close to the whole picture. It is about 30% of the actual job. Real life in real estate is going back and forth with realtors, title officers, loan officers, waiting for forms going back and

THE REAL ESTATE

Nashville is nothing close to shy when it comes to being one of the hottest cities to live in the nation! According to current stats it tells us that about 100 people are moving here PER day.

A

lso known as Music City, this is THE PERFECT place to cater to all walks of life: the student trying to figure it out, the family looking to build a solid foundation, the creative artist searching for inspiration, the entrepreneur who wants to flourish, whatever path you’re walking on, this is the city for you. This all-encompassing city has been growing and growing over the past few decades and the ever-changing landscape of real estate has been one to watch. There are many hustling towns including Austin, Texas and Las Vegas is even growing before everyone’s eyes. But Nashville is setting the tone with a growing median housing rate of about 7% from last year.

Now as much as every city may be feeling that influx, there is something to be said about what draws people to Nashville, and it is not just the country music.

ing. Navigating the current market is best met with a great realtor with the experience and up to date knowledge to guide you through.

People are calling Nashville one of the “hottest” places in the U.S. to live, and no, it’s not because of the hot chicken. With COVID bringing everyone into their homes for most of the year, people are now investing in real estate more than ever. Real estate is on the rise, and it is a smart investment, but many wonder, is now the time to buy or sell? Although that question is loaded, as many don’t know when the market will get back to “normal,” many real estate professionals encourage everyone to have good representation whether you are buying or sell-

Based on the 2021 market report from the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, the median price of homes keeps on rising. In fact, from January of 2021 to May, it has raised almost $75,000 over time. Now sitting at an average of $415,000 for a residential home, and the inventory staying at around the same, about 2,900 homes on the market, there could be a house out there for everyone who wants one. But with those 100 people a day moving to Nashville, you have to be ready to put in an offer immediately. There is much to say about urgency at this point.

MARKET IS ON FIRE! The price per square foot in Nashville has raised about 25% since last year, as it becomes more and more a destination spot for people across the country.

It is officially a seller’s market, but that doesn’t mean buying is impossible. You will just be competing with other homebuyers, so get competitive with your realtor and be ready to offer more than the listed price. Yes- you heard that right. More. Everyone wants a good deal, that’s a given. But offering $40,000 or more than the list price is almost crucial to having the offer be accepted. And just because you offer more than the list price, don’t think you are the only one. It must be an attractive offer to the seller too, not just an attractive price. For the sellers of Nashville, this is the time. Not a now or never situation, but it would be a great time to turn that equity

into profit. And just because it is a seller’s market, doesn’t mean that you can just list your home and expect offers to roll in. Every realtor will tell you, staging, staging, staging. It is one of the smartest investments you can make to get your home sold quicker than average. Having your home look top notch is what will get it sold quick and for a good price. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to make some improvements to your house, and then can really pay off in the end. According to Redfin, some of the most return you can get from improvements come from installing quartz counters, turning your home office into a staged den, and installing a tankless water heater. Now it may seem off to improve a house that you won’t even be living in anymore, but the benefits come after the sale every time. The market is on fire right now, if that wasn’t clear already. Every market trend

report will show that everything is on the up and up. Some may benefit from it, and some will have to put some grit and effort in. All in all, the city is booming in all different directions which is no wonder why everyone wants a piece of the pie. With new developments and over twenty schools to choose from, the opportunity for career options and placement can be crossed off your checklist of security and give you a peace of mind. Plus, we can all agree that the lack of income tax is appealing too! Making the decision to become a homeowner is a big deal and we understand that, so we want to ensure we provide you with nothing but the best guidance with our Top 10 Realtors in Nashville, to guide you every step of the way. Be sure to read further so that one of these amazing realtors can make your next big move a success. MN

BERNICE BURNS, YOUR GUIDE TO REAL ESTATE IN 2021

The current housing market can seem like a whirlwind to today’s buyers and sellers. There is nothing more important than having the right agent by your side to give you the knowledge, guidance, and support you need when looking to buy or sell. to where she was able to afford bigger and better each round. Getting her feet in the real estate water, she pursued her dream of being a realtor shortly after and has watched the real estate market fluctuate and grow in Nashville over the years.

Today, Bernice has diversified her real estate operations, and not only helps buyers and sellers, but also does property management and some commercial buying and selling as well. She also works with a developer and builder in the Green Hills and Berry Hills area to utilize properties for VRBO and some for long term lease as well as sales. Bernice understands the importance of continuing education in real estate and staying aware of what is new and upcoming, which helps her to provide the best quality service and up-to-date knowledge.

B

ernice Burns of RE/MAX Advantage grew up in a large family of General Contractors, so real estate and investing is in her blood. Starting with her own personal real estate story, Bernice began purchasing houses and fixing them up while living in them, to sell for substantial profit 2 years later. Over time, she was able to set herself up

Bernice says, in this seller’s market, it is not unusual for sellers to be met with multiple offers, and prices above market list. It is also important that sellers move out quickly and stage the home, making it sell much quicker and for the best price. For buyers, Bernice says, “With many houses going over asking, the list price has become more of a ‘starting bid,’ like

in an auction.” So, be ready to go above market price if you really want the home, you will be competing with hundreds of other buyers. But don’t be discouraged when you don’t land the first home, there are always more on market every day, and the more you look, the better prepared you are to evaluate the next home. Sometimes, it just takes being creative when making offers and a seasoned realtor will help guide them through this. The current market in Nashville is competitive. TOP 5 HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS Keeping up with home maintenance, especially as a new homeowner can be a daunting task, and something we often forget about. Follow our Top 5 Home Maintenance Tips that will save you from unnecessary costs and damage to your home. The more you care for your home, the more your home cares for you! Flush your water heater Your water heater is used every day, which means you probably have buildup and sediment inside. All you need is a bucket and common knowledge of your tank; this will greatly help the longevity of your system. Replace batteries in smoke and CO2 detectors The dreaded beep of the smoke detectors. Changing these batteries at least once a year is always the smart choice to avoid those annoying beeps, but also to always make sure your home is safe from unsafe exposure. Look for leaks, everywhere Every faucet you can think of, and even the toilet, should be checked every couple of months for leaks. It is usually just an old washer that needs to be changed, but this simple fix can save you from mold, paint damage, water damage, and wood rot. Vacuum your dryer vents and air ducts It’s safe to say we all want to avoid dryer fires. If your clothes aren’t drying quick or there is a weird smell, it may be time to clean the vent. And the same goes for your air ducts, and while you can clean ducts yourself, it’s best saved for a professional. Check and replace your air filters Want your air conditioning and heating unit to last longer, peek at your air filters every couple of weeks and see if it needs to be changed- especially during cold winters and hot summers when the unit is constantly on!

5 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP YOUR HOME ORGANIZED Being a wife mom and a business professional who works crazy hours, it can seem impossible to keep up with staying clean and organized. However I have found these tips and tricks help me stay on top of things throughout the week!

1

Use an app to keep track of your grocery shopping list. I personally use an app called “Out of Milk” it tracks my shopping trends, coupons at my local stores, and the best part is my husband and kids also downloaded the app and we can all update the shopping list in real time this way we never have to double back to the store (it’s a real time and money saver).

2

Take 15 mins out every night to clean the following. Do the dishes after dinner, vacuum and sweep (I have a dog so vacuuming needs to be done daily in my house) if you don’t have pets you can do every 3 days or so. And take out the trash. This keeps my home tidy during the week and allows me to just do the detailed cleaning on the weekends!

3

Make sure to clean your bathrooms weekly. I always keep separate cleaning products directly in the bathroom under the sink, this way they are right there when I need them. Wipe down the sink and fixtures, clean the toilet itself (gross, I know sorry, I hate this part) then clean the shower and don’t forget to clean the shower doors or shower curtain! Next sweep and mop the flooring.

4

Laundry also should be done weekly. My laundry is usually done on Friday nights. I don’t know about you, but folding laundry and hanging it up is my least favorite part. I find watching a good tv show or my new obsession listening to a good book helps me get it done in no time, I guess it’s because my mind is somewhere else.

5

Don’t forget to donate or throw away unused items once a month! I clean out my pantry once a month and donate any food that isn’t going to be eaten any time soon, same with my families clothes (I have two growing sons) when the jeans and sneakers get to small it goes into the donation pile and gets dropped off once a month. Same for my clothes as well. I’ve lost a ton of weight and keep losing so I am donating all my clothes that are now too big. My rule is if we haven’t used it in a month and don’t think we will be using it next month it gets donated or thrown out! This way we avoid clutter and hoarding.

The main thing to remember is a little mess never hurt anyone, and family time should always come first, we all aren’t perfect. But if you can try this routine or even add in some to-dos of your own it will cut down on your stress immensely and give you more time on the weekends with your family. AND THAT’S WHATS IMPORTANT!
