With the new Art Academy Club comes a new era. After missing out a year, the CA9 class has come together to create this magazine. Each member has poured their heart and soul into the making this, so treat it with love. Though at times each had their own problems, we all managed to push through and got this done. With the guidance of Bayo, we all managed to get this in on time. With the start of the year looking up, I look forward to the works of others to make this year great. AAC: What is your favorite color? Thor: Blue. AAC: Your favorite font? Thor: Though it’s not usable all the time, I’d probably say Rockwell. AAC: What encouraged you to become a teacher? Thor: I mainly did it just because the opportunity arose, and more so the passion for art. I mean what better way is there to work on art all the time and be surrounded by it than by teaching art? I never really saw myself being a teacher when I was in school, but so far I’m happy. AAC: What is your favorite part of teaching? Thor: Being able to see students work is a great plus; and though I haven’t been here long, watching them grow or seeing where they’re at and where they could be is also exciting. AAC: Is this something that motivates you to keep teaching? Thor: Yeah, definitely! AAC: What’s it like going from a student to a teacher? Thor: It’s very different. Even though I still get to see the same assignments when I was here, there’s a lot more to being a teacher than I would have thought. It’s hard to explain, but there’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff that I didn’t understand as a student. Ultimately, it’s eye-opening. AAC: I heard Mr. Bayonet saying he was not very fond of you as a student, so I assume that changed since you now work with him? Thor: Yeah, absolutely. When I first came in as a freshman, I didn’t do a lot of work or I would do it last minute and turn it in. It wasn’t always bad quality work, which I think upset him more; but it could be even better if I actually spent more time on it. Over the years, I actually took time on my work and we became good friends while I was a student here. Afterwards, we even kept in touch. So I’d say he doesn’t hate me anymore.
AAC: What is one thing you’ve learned from the students? Thor: It’s hard to say, but everybody’s different in their strengths. Some are more paper and pencil, others are more computer skilled. Even though everybody has a passion for art in here, they’re still unique. AAC: How would you say classes now compare to the class you graduated from? Thor: In today’s classes, everybody gets along together a lot more. When I was here, not that there aren’t cliches now and you have your friends, it was very separated. You didn’t really interact with half of the group. In addition, I would say a lot of people in here now are more motivated and driven. Back when I was here, a lot of students would come into Commercial Art just because they wanted to come to Tech and it was fairly easy to get into Commercial Art at the time. Now the AP’s and guidance have gotten more strict with their standards so students that come in now are at least more motivated. AAC: What do you hope to achieve by the end of your first year as a Commercial art instructor? Thor: I wish to make at least some sort of impact. I don’t expect to change somebody’s life, but I also don’t want to be remembered as “the new crappy teacher.” I’m getting used to delivering assignments and making it to where I’m not reading directly from the slide and it’s just boring. I’d like to have that same spin or twist on it to make it interesting, kinda like Bayonet does. By the end of the year, I hope to NOT be the teacher that students dread.

The thought process of a bee is what inspired my design initially, then it lead to something else. I was quite confident in my shirt design and was almost certain I would win, I enjoy the idea of competition.

I first tried to use the word imagine, then tried new and different ways of conveying it, I saw a paint brush and pencil as weapons for artist to convey their feelings. I think my design connected to people who have artistic motivation to succeed.

I went through nine different designs before settling, in the end I was inspired by a vintage ad that included a television. To me, television was a great way to link Commerical Art as a lot of what we do is advertisements. I think the reason I won was because I used a different color blue which caught many eyes and also included bright colors such as pink. The colors most likely stuck with people.

I was stuck on the design for a while, so I started to just sketch and draw random things across my page. I eventually realized that I wanted my t-shirt design to reflect how I feel about art, and how its an extension of the person making it, hence the “design yourself’ part. Honestly, even though I thought my design was good, and I believed that it would give my classmates a run for their money. I was not expecting it to win. I thought that people might see the design as too complex for a t-shirt and decide not to vote for it. But, I am happy that my design was chosen, since I spent a lot off time designing the small parts of the design, so I would attribute my design being picked to attention to detail and obsessive behavior. The Art Academy Club started of this year with a bang, winning not only the trophy for “Best Wagon”, but also the trophy for the “Best Spirit Float”. At the same time, the Art Academy Club also participated in the school wide door competition, in which students and teachers alike banded together to decorate their doors to represent their clubs. While the Art Academy did not take this award, the decorations were made by every single person in the club, making it a great team building and creative activity. On Friday, September 14, Officers Sophia, Cassandra, Zoe and Ana took to the gym floor and displayed the Art Academy Float for the school to see, and the Wagon couldn’t have turned out better! The same can be said for the Spirit Float, made by all of the officers as well as a few select club members. Who knew that the Art academy could be good at decoration?

y mom was my main motivation because she was only one that supported me in doing art. I look up to her a lot as she is hardworking and determined it encourages me to feel and act the same way towards my art and role in CAA, because of this I wanted to engage more in the program to make it more fun and exciting.

This year is starting off hot! For the first time in AAC history, the club is allowing Non- Commercial Arts members to participate in the Art Academy Club. Having the largest set up out of all clubs present, the Art Academy club truly stole the show. Students and teachers alike were interested to see what the club has to offer. The reaction was overwhelming; students were very excited to see the school’s first art club. In order to appeal to more students, the AAC officers decided to display a wide variety of art, such as photography, illustration, graphic design, and the recently submitted T-Shirt designs. This paid off, as visitors were captivated by the wide variety of art on display. To add to that, the Art Academy Club grabbed students’ attention with stylish flyers (designed by Sophia Alonso). Overall, the Club Expo proved to be a great chance, and successful opportunity, to showcase what the Art Academy Club has to offer, while simultaneously inspiring others to take a deeper look at their more creative sides. Things can only get better from here, and as such the Art Academy Club is destined to succeed.

eptember 12th kicked off with a bang as our first official club day here in AAC. Our first year opening invites to anyone and everyone outside of the Commercial Art Academy led to record-breaking results, with 127 members! Starting out the day, we introduced our new officers for the year, expanding our usual six to nine officers. A moment of silence was held for Naylor (don’t worry, he’s not dead!), before leading straight into a moment of chaos for Thor! Speaking of

him, he designed our amazing Art Academy Club shirt. Every club member gets one for free, and don’t forget, the class shirts are $10 each — if you’re a club member, it’s $5. After glossing over the major events of the quarter, we ended with pride; each attendee was given a piece of the puzzle that unites us to illustrate for Homecoming’s door competition. We hope our next club day is as successful!

closing remarks with Bayo It has been a scary and an exciting start of the year. As many of our students, parents, and alumni know; Mr. Naylor has moved on from teaching. This program would not be what it is today without the solid foundation and legacy he continued to set in place. As I reflect back to the first week of school, it was the first time in 11 years, I knew my mentor was not going to be in the classroom. I’d be lying to you if I was not scared out of my mind. Yes, I know the policies and procedures of how our class is governed, but this was something different. I knew that my roll in the class changed. I knew that we hired one of our former students. I knew much now rested on my shoulders. That morning, I sent Mr. Naylor a very emotional text about this fear I was feeling. It was early in the day and I wasn’t sure if he would reply... but he did. Like always, he shared some comforting words that did calm and encourage me. He assured that the foundation that this class was built upon was still in place. The policies and procedures that have been developed over 48 years are strong and still in effect. I found comfort in knowing the officers that were elected would continue to carry our banner of success through this next school year to inspire the next generation of students. Our students are inspired and excited about what we have in store. I look forward to another amazing year and all that will transpire in our academy, our program, but most of all, in our student’s creative minds and hearts. Mr. Naylor, we hope that we continue to make you proud!
