by Dean Cynthia Briggs Kittredge Patterns of theological education are shifting in response to economic and historical changes in the role of the church in society. Formation for ministry at Seminary of the Southwest shapes students in the Christian tradition while involving them intensively in the realities of contemporary culture. This issue of Ratherview depicts a com munity in active and prayerful engagement in the good news of Jesus Christ. The Duncalf-Villavaso Endowed Chair in Church History honoring Frederic and Alma Rather Duncalf and Ernest and Ethel Rather Villavaso is now fully endowed by the successful Campaign for Leadership. Professor Dan Joslyn-Siemiatkoski is one of the creative theological faculty who thinks critically about the role of the church in God’s mission and the forms in which it has expressed itself throughout history. Students who learn from Professor Siemiatkoski will be equipped and informed to lead communities in the work of being the church in the present. Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Theology Charlie Cook brings his own historical perspective on the church and the seminary to the profile of Dan and the story of the Rather family. The programs of the Loise Henderson Wessendorff Center envision pastoral leadership exercised beyond the parish and brought skillfully into the professions of healthcare, mental health, the armed

2

services and social service agencies. Seminary of the Southwest was a pioneer in this broad vision of ministry with the establishment of the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry in 1996. With the establishment of the Bishop Dena A. Harrison Fellows Program, which honors our alumna, chair of our board and bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Texas, we make another stride to widen the way Christian leaders serve in the community. Graduates of the seminary’s Master of Arts in Counseling will work in collaboration with mental health providers in East Texas to meet the mental health needs in the counties in that region of the state. Made possible by a grant from the Episcopal Health Foundation in thanks for Bishop Harrison’s visionary leadership, the Harrison Fellows Program promises to expand and enliven how Christian ministry is embodied. Dr. Gina Minnix and Dr. Stephanie Ramirez, joining the faculty as professors in counselor education, bring new expertise to our community and strengthen the curriculum of the MA in Coun seling. We are grateful for the confidence that the Episcopal Health Foundation has placed in our program and in our graduates. We strive to do all our good work with the core values of hospitality and celebration. I hope you will sense that spirit in these pages.

The Rt. Rev. C. Andrew Doyle, bishop of the Diocese of Texas, and Executive Chair of the Episcopal Health Foundation Ms. Linnet Deily, spoke at the 2015 Matriculation Dinner honoring Bishop Dena A. Harrison, center, and the establishment of the Harrison Fellows Program.

Bringing History to Life By Charles James Cook, Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Theology The interior of Dr. Daniel Joslyn-Siemiatkoski’s faculty office is exactly what one would expect of a church historian—scholarly journals and books, stacked on shelves and tables, a chair or two in the middle of the room, positioned across from a comfortable sofa, forming a natural arrangement for personal conversations or group discussions. Tucked in a corner, barely visible, rests the contem porary heartbeat of effective communication in our digital age—the desktop computer, planted securely on what appears to be one of those rickety slide-out tables that somehow miraculously bears the necessary burden thrust upon it. In this case—the burden of history. Just inside the office door, on the wall, is a framed picture of Richard Hooker, the much revered Anglican priest of the 16th century. He is credited with developing the grand synthesis of our particular tradition. Hooker’s so-called three-legged stool of scripture, reason and tradition is well-known to every seminary graduate, and multitudes of people preparing for the rites

of baptism and confirmation in our parishes. The Richard Hooker in this picture seems to convey a facial expression that says, “I know something you don’t know; but you will find out later in time.” As any worthy historian knows, the interpretations of events are never completely fixed. It often takes time for even the greatest truths to unfold and emerge with greater clarity. For example, as our contemporary church confronts the challenge of change, Richard Hooker might actually be a reliable source. Dr. Joslyn-Siemiatkoski is the Duncalf-Villavaso Associate Professor in Church History, a chair and position he has held since 2014, having arrived from a faculty teaching position at our sister sem inary, Church Divinity School of the Pacific. The names Duncalf and Villavaso have a rich history of their own; a history that is deeply intertwined Continued on following page...

with the Seminary of the Southwest. Almost seven decades ago, the Duncalf and Villavaso families, heirs and descendants of C.T. Rather, were seeking to donate five acres of land, including their historic home, located on the northern

It would be the beginning of a grand experiment for theological studies boundary of the University of Texas. Their original intent was to find some educational or charitable purpose for the property, which would also honor the memory of Ernest Villavaso, Jr. who had died at a young age and whose childhood years had been happily spent on the grounds of the estate. Legend has it that the families first offered the property to another religious denomination, who were not interested at that time. It was then that the visionary Bishop of Texas, John E. Hines, approached the donors about the

4

idea of building a theological seminary on that location. Actually, what would eventually become the Seminary of the Southwest, had already begun, with several promising students already taking classes at All Saints’ Episcopal Church on the University of Texas campus. A real campus to call their own remained a distant dream. When Bishop Hines and the generous donors signed and sealed a mutual agreement, that campus dream became a living reality. As Richard Hooker knew so well, it takes time for vision and truth to take hold. It would certainly be true in this case. A theological seminary now had a place to call home—a place ideally situated within sight of governmental politics, higher education, and commerce of almost every conceiv able kind. It would be the beginning of a grand experiment for theological studies; a program intentionally designed to meet at the intersection of church and world; Christ and culture. It all emerged from an unexpected and formative gift, given by those interested in a young institution who, in turn, would form and inspire others—therefore, honoring the memory and legacy of one much loved. That mission continues to this day. Few would argue with the importance of teaching history in a theological seminary. However, there may well be differences of opinion concerning what role and significance history plays in a moment when the church appears to want

to reinvent itself, perhaps to remain culturally relevant. That remains an ongoing debate; one that is certainly not a new endeavor. What is clear is that wisdom is to be discovered in understanding how history influences institutions of every kind—especially the church. The Seminary of the Southwest is an example, in that it was shaped and formed by persons, places and events that occurred over time—some antici pated and some not—and those influences brought forth unique and wonderfully peculiar identities, behaviors and practices. Uncovering and understanding those influences can be crucial for effective pastoral leadership. This is the gift that church historians can offer those who come to learn from them. Dr. Joslyn-Siemiatkoski certainly brings this insight to his own teaching practice. Sitting on that comfortable office sofa one afternoon, he said that he is not so much interested in clergy and lay leaders becoming professional historians, but that they know how to appreciate a context and culture when they enter into it—as newcomer and stranger—and to take the time to listen to the historical accounts that

Seminary of the Southwest is most grateful to Mrs. Kitty King Powell of Houston, who gave a major gift to fully fund the Duncalf-Villavaso Chair in Church History honoring Frederic and Alma Rather Duncalf and Ernest and Ethel Rather Villavaso during the Campaign for Leadership.

Mrs. Powell’s late husband was Benjamin Harrison Powell, IV, whose mother, Marian “Mamie” Rather, was a niece of Charles Rather who built the estate home which was eventually bequeathed for the seminary’s campus. Benjamin Powell was close in age to Charles Rather’s grandson, Ernest “Bebe” Villavaso, and the two grew up together playing on the beautiful treeshaded lawn that is now our campus. Generations of students, past and future, are beneficiaries of the tremendous generosity and vision of the Rather, Duncalf, Villavaso and Powell families.

What is clear is that wisdom is to be discovered in understanding how history influences institutions of every kind—especially the church. shaped and formed this new community, including the mythological components that over time have gained prominence. As a means of engaging this important process, he has his students enter into conversation, not only with him, as professor, but with one another. Conversation becomes the pathway to understanding why a now distant moment in history still influences the contemporary church. The students are given a guide at the beginning of each course, in the form of an outline of topics to be explored. The unspoken key is this—to have informative conversations, to learn from one another, each conversationalist needs to know enough to make a contribution. This process brings history to life. Recently returning from a trip to Jerusalem with other scholars, Dr. Joslyn-Siemiatkoski shared thoughts about his experience. He did not make this journey as a tourist or as one on religious pilgrimage—this trip focused on the issues that present themselves today; not issues from ancient times. There were times, on this journey, that he found himself very much an outsider; needing assistance to navigate the course before him. Reflecting on this, he wrote, “My visit in the end was about gaining humility. Thrust against all I did not know, I gained a new empathy for those who are on the outside of the majority American culture that I thrive in. Although not having gone to Jerusalem as a pilgrim, I returned with the new eyes and full heart gained by many a pilgrim.” Humility. Discovery. Becoming a pilgrim. These are the essential qualities of a church historian, a teller of stories, once and always known and now under stood in new ways. Somewhere, Richard Hooker is smiling.

Physical Wellness for Ministry Seminary of the Southwest launched its Comprehensive Wellness for Ministry program this past spring with focused programming on financial wellness. In the fall of 2015 our campus will be attending to the area of physical wellness, and in subsequent semesters we will focus on spiritual wellness and vocational wellness. Director of Community Wellness Micah Jackson explains the seminary’s response to a vocational situation in the church. “The priests, scholars, counselors, chaplains, and spiritual directors who graduate from our seminary are embarking upon vocations which are demanding in many ways. Comprehensive Wellness for Ministry is a program designed to support our graduates in the transition to their early ministries and also set them up to be successful in their vocations for many years to follow.” The fall schedule designed by Professor Anthony Baker includes the following activities: • Evening in the Park, Eastwoods Neighborhood Park, September 12, 2015. 4:30-7:00 p.m. Fun, games, food, and an introduction to the Theology of Physical Wellness by Director of Comprehensive Wellness Professor Micah Jackson.

• Wednesday evening cooking classes with Chef Barbara Frisbie, October-November. • Challenges and Successes Check-ins. Five to seven minutes of sharing each Monday and Saturday by one person (staff, faculty, or student) about progress in living out their Rule of Life* in habits of physical wellness. • Training throughout the semester for the 3 Kings 3 Miler 5K Fun Run sponsored by St. Joseph Episcopal Church in Salado, Texas, on January 2, 2016. Southwest will take a team of runners. Sign-up required. *Professor Jackson led the design team for our Comprehensive Wellness for Ministry Program, and he explains the place of a Rule of Life in the program. “Our design team came to understand that the best time to develop and instill these habits of wellness was during the formation process itself, and that the best way to do so was through the ancient Christian concept of Rules. Ultimately, we hope that students will have learned during their time here how to revise their rule to changing circumstances, and to live into the discipline it represents.”
