TRANSITIONS ARE RARELY EASY, BUT IN THE

case of the leadership transition that Seminary of the Southwest experienced this spring, I cannot imagine a more graceful change. We move into the future following a seamless transition between two magnificent leaders. The board received news of Dean and President Douglas Travis’ retirement with surprise and sadness. As you will read in this issue, Doug’s accomplishments were impressive and significant. He led the seminary through difficult economic

times in 2008 and through our Campaign for Leadership, detailed on page 15, raising over $12 million for annual fund, scholarships and endowed faculty chairs. Doug is loved and appreciated by this community, which was clearly evident at the celebration of his tenure. The Weeks Center on campus was filled with alumni, students, faculty, staff, trustees, family, and friends from our sister seminaries Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest and from congregations which Doug had served. The board cannot thank Doug enough for his leadership and commitment to the seminary’s mission. His faithfulness, good humor, compassion and countless trips on Southwest Airlines for meetings with bishops and friends will not be forgotten. We are a stronger, healthier institution because of his gifts and service, and we wish Dean Emeritus Douglas Travis Godspeed in his retirement and future ministries. Our next leader was already in our midst and equipped with gifts and graces to provide leadership for our future. It was with great joy that the board announced in March that Cynthia Briggs Kittredge had accepted our call as dean and president beginning June 1, 2013. Dean Kittredge is the perfect person to lead at this time, and we are extraordinarily blessed to have her gifts and talents devoted to our institution and

Congratulations to this spring’s graduates. Their commencement is an important reminder that all that we do is for their education and formation for ministry wherever God leads them. Each one, in her or his own way, makes a mark on this institution for the better, and we are glad that each found a home with us for this important period in their lives. For all these blessings, Seminary of the Southwest is deeply grateful. We pray for God’s continued guidance and mercy as we puruse the thrilling enterprise of theological education for the church and the world.

its faithful service to the church. She has demonstrated her excellence in research, writing and teaching as professor of New Testament since joining the seminary in 1999. More recently, she has added to those accomplishments her demonstrated gifts of leadership and administration as she has served since 2010 as academic dean. Cynthia is known and respected throughout the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion for her scholarship, wisdom and faithful ministry. We could not be happier with this vitally important transition, and we look forward to an exciting future under her leadership. Plans are underway for the installation of Dean and President Kittredge on Friday, September 13. I hope that many of you will be able to join with her family and friends throughout the church in celebrating this significant new role for our beloved colleague. As the Campaign for Leadership nears its completion, we thank the many generous individuals, congregations and foundations who have brought us so far towards our goal. We would not have enjoyed this success without the leadership of Barbara and Claude Payne, who have so graciously and ably chaired the Campaign. Their tireless and creative service has been received in this community as a great blessing, which we celebrated at Commencement in May as you will read on page 8.

Dean & President Cynthia Briggs Kittredge will be installed at a Festival Eucharist on Friday, September 13, 2013, at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Austin. Details and RSVP can be found at www.ssw.edu/installation or by calling Stacy Morales at 512-472-4133.

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SEMINARY OF THE SOUTHWEST W HER E A S T HE V ERY R E V. DOUGL A S T R AV IS

has faithfully, diligently, and devoutly served as Dean and President of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest since June 1, 2007; and, Whereas this sixth-generation Texan and fourth-generation clergy person shared these rich traditions with us—in particular a new understanding and appreciation for the great metropolis of Tulia, Texas, deep in the heart of Swisher County on the high plains of the Panhandle; and, Whereas he gave generously of his time and talents—in particular his gifts of leadership, team building, and organizational effectiveness—to foster and grow the talent and professionalism of the faculty, staff, administration, and board, thereby bringing a healthy spirit of respect, accountability, and collaboration to their work together as mature Christian leaders for the benefit of the seminary; and, Whereas he traveled extensively to bring the Southwest story to bishops, dioceses, congregations, alumni, friends, donors, church leaders, and the Council of Deans; and, Whereas he represented the U.S. seminaries at the first international consultation for Anglican Communion theological college Principals and Deans, held in Canterbury in May 2011; and, Whereas his travels expanded the awareness and understanding of the seminary and enhanced its standing among its sister seminaries throughout The Episcopal Church; and,

4

Whereas the seminary experienced dramatic growth in enrollment in its degree and diploma programs; and, Whereas the financial foundation of the seminary has been and continues to be strengthened by dramatic growth in Annual Fund giving and the success of the Campaign for Leadership, including the largest gift in our history; and, Whereas his focus on the Creeds, the Conversation Covenant and the vision of forming mature Christian leaders has further distinguished Seminary of the Southwest as a Seminary for the Whole Church; and, Whereas his humility, sense of humor, forthrightness, and deep faith have made him a worthy leader and role model for mature Christian leaders and endeared him to this community; Be it therefore resolved on this 12th day of May, 2013, that the trustees of Seminary of the Southwest extend their profound gratitude, deepest appreciation, manifold thanks, and best wishes to

and bid him Godspeed as he leaves this campus, but not the wider seminary community.

Farewell Sermon

A Toast to Doug

Excerpt of last sermon from Dean & President Douglas Travis

By Cynthia Briggs Kittredge

It is more important that we be friends than it is that we succeed. It is more important that we be friends than it is that we be professional. It is more important that we be friends than it is that we use the latest marketing technique. It is more important that we be friends than it is that we be colleagues. As we are such friends—as we are friends in Christ—there is a third one always with us, the one who gives us breath, the one who gives us energy. This one who makes it all work, and then it is not “I” who am succeeding. It is “we” who are succeeding, in Christ. Have this mind among yourselves, the mind of the one who emptied himself taking the form of a slave. And always recall what this one said: I do not call you slaves any longer, because the slave does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends...

Dear Doug, On behalf of the faculty I want to thank you— You came to be our Dean. (You may not have been sure what you were getting into.) You stayed. You didn’t bail when there were big challenges. You were real. As with politicians, the most important part of being Dean and President is sincerity, and if you can fake that you will surely succeed. But you didn’t need to fake it, because you were real. We knew when you were frustrated, tired, bored. We knew when you were proud of us, of our teaching, our scholarship, our modeling mature Christian leadership.

Focus on your friendship in Christ first and, to quote yet another mystic, all shall be well.

You dared to engage. You showed up. You allowed yourself to be seen. It is what Brené Brown calls vulnerability. Vulnerability is not knowing victory or defeat, it’s understanding the necessity of both; it’s engaging. It’s being all in. (Daring Greatly, Brené Brown, p.2) So thank you, Doug, for coming to be our dean, for staying, and for daring greatly. Excerpt from Dean & President Douglas Travis’ last sermon preached in Christ Chapel for Commencement Evensong, May 13, 2013. Entire text can be read at http://www.ssw.edu/resources/sermons

Kittredge Leads Seminary of the Southwest

Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, who has served as professor of New Testament since she joined the faculty in 1999 and as academic dean since 2010, began her tenure as dean and president of Seminary of the Southwest on June 1, 2013.

She was ordained a priest in 1985 and is canonically resident in the Diocese of Texas. She has served as assisting clergy at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd since 1999.

The Rt. Rev. Dena Harrison, chair of the board and bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Texas, announced the board’s appointment of Dr. Kittredge in March when Douglas Travis made known his plans to retire after leading the seminary since 2007. “On behalf of the board of trustees, it is my great joy to announce the Rev. Dr. Kittredge’s appointment as our eighth dean and president. She is the perfect person to lead the seminary at this time, and we are extraordinarily blessed to have her gifts and talents devoted to our institution and its faithful service to the church,” said Bishop Harrison.

Dr. Kittredge’s research has centered on early Christian communities, Paul’s letters, the Fourth gospel, and hermeneutics. She has published Community and Authority: The Rhetoric of Obedience in the Pauline Tradition and Conversations with Scripture: The Gospel of John and co-edited Walk in the Ways of Wisdom: Essays in Honor of Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza and The Bible in the Public Square. She contributed “Biblical Studies for Ministry: Critical and Faithful Interpretation of Scripture in an Either/Or World” in Transforming Graduate Biblical Education: Ethos and Discipline, Kent Richards and Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, eds., Society of Biblical Literature.

Martha J. Horne, dean and president emerita of Virginia Theological Seminary, will preach at Dr. Kittredge’s installation on Friday, September 13, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Austin. Horne was the first woman appointed president of an Episcopal seminary, and Kittredge is the third. Katherine Hancock Ragsdale is president and dean of Episcopal Divinity School, which she has led since 2009.

Kittredge served on the Theological Education in the Anglican Communion Steering Committee from 2009-2012. She was elected president of the Anglican Association of Biblical Scholars in 2008 and has served on the board of Evangelical Education Society since 2005; she now chairs the board.

Dr. Kittredge holds degrees from Williams College and from Harvard Divinity School where she earned a ThD in 1996.

Dr. Kittredge and her husband, Frank D. Kittredge, Jr., live in Austin and have three grown children.

The Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry, bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, spoke of our “God of passionate love” and reminded the graduates of the power of love to heal, to change lives and to change the world. Quoting the words of the African-American spiritual, There is a Balm in Gilead, Bishop Curry moved the congregation with his powerful message.

Barbara King Payne Audiences, a national organization that supports and promotes the arts for young people. You have organized and led trips to Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and China. Your appreciation for world cultures, plus your keen sense of design and style, led you to serve as director for the procurement of crèches from Anglican provinces worldwide for the Peace Museum in Bethlehem. You were appointed liaison to the spouses of Episcopal Church bishops for the 1998 Lambeth Conference. St. James’ House, Baytown, Texas, Friends of Nursing, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Houston, and the Anglican Communion Compass Rose Society have been blessed by your loving service as a trustee. While your husband, Claude, was rector of St. Martin’s, Houston, you co-founded and served as buyer for the Gift Shoppe, which provides funds for outreach activities of the church.

Mrs. Barbara King Payne, teacher, musician and co-chair of the seminary’s Campaign for Leadership.

Musician, teacher, tour organizer and guide, trustee, campaign co-chair. Your many gifts, gracefully shared with the church worldwide, have been an inspiration and blessing to all who have been touched by your ministries. You have shared your musical expertise through teaching and performance as harpist and pianist with the Beaumont Symphony and Civic Opera, through participation with church choirs and through service on the board of Young

10

You taught grade school to help put Claude through seminary, and you attended the mini-courses offered by the seminary faculty. Sage advice offered by the faculty, which you took to heart, was never to criticize Claude’s Sunday sermon until at least Tuesday. At last, with more time to enjoy your friends and family, or reading, gardening, playing bridge or golf, you accepted this seminary’s request to co-chair the Campaign for Leadership, a three-year fundraising commitment. With deep gratitude for your leadership and in recognition of your life of ministry and support, Seminary of the Southwest is pleased to bestow upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Claude Edward Payne Chemical engineer, priest, bishop, author, visionary leader. You have brought your passion for the spread of the gospel to your ministries, and you have had a major influence on energizing the mission of the church.

Following God’s call to ordained ministry, you went on to earn an MDiv from Church Divinity School of the Pacific. You served four parishes, the last being St. Martin’s, Houston, before being elected bishop for the Diocese of Texas.

Earning a chemical engineering degree from Rice University, you began your career with Union Carbide, now known as Dow Chemical, where you installed the first computer on a company production unit—not surprising for a man known as an excellent administrator and a forward-thinking leader.

As bishop, you chaired St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System and with $150 million, established Episcopal Health Charities, for community healthcare. You served as a trustee of Baylor College of Medicine, where you hold emeritus status. You chaired the boards of Camp Allen, where you doubled its size with a $14 million expansion; Episcopal High School; St. Stephen’s School and Seminary of the Southwest. You co-authored, with Dr. Hamilton Beazley, Reclaiming the Great Commission, which documented the vision and experience of moving the focus of your diocese from maintenance to mission. This work and vision caught the imagination of the wider church, and you hosted six annual Clear Vision conferences for Episcopal bishops and their staffs. Your “retirement has not meant golf and bridge, two favorite hobbies; rather, you have co-founded the Gathering of Leaders, which enhances leadership for younger clergy in the U.S. and Canada; you serve on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Panel of Reference for mediation with global conflicts; and you accepted our seminary’s request to chair, with your wife Barbara, our $15.9 million Campaign for Leadership.

The Rt. Rev. Claude E. Payne, author, visionary leader, co-chair of the seminary’s Campaign for Leadership.

Your Miraculous Expectations, Clear Vision and Big Holy Audacious Goals have inspired the Church and raised the bar for the leaders and institutions you have touched. In recognition of your accomplishments, your faithfulness and your tremendous service, Seminary of the Southwest is honored to bestow upon you the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa.

Soul X Southwest i*DPOu CZ .JSFMMB $BSSPDDJOP JT JODMVEFE JO Soul X Southwest, literary journal of Seminary of the Southwest, published this spring by TFOJPS FEJUPST $ISJTUJOF )BWFOT BOE $ISJTUJBO )BXMFZ This first-in-recent-memory publication includes original poetry, prose and visual arts by students, spouses, children and faculty at the seminary. Faculty advisor, Anthony Baker, writes, “What a gift, then, this journal is to an institution that commits itself to the methods, practices, and structures of theology. In these pages, we invite ourselves to remember, in a flash of playful confrontation, that what binds us to our work and to one another is not just a curriculum and a rhythm of weeks and semesters, but, more fundamentally, the common desire to invite one another...on paths that lead us toward the real presences that we can, from time to time, experience.
