SANFORD'S CROWN JEWEL B Y R H O N D A D E ATO N

At the heart of every thriving downtown city, you can often find a diamond in the ruff — an attraction, building or activity with a history and a story that withstands the test of time. For the city of Sanford, the heartbeat of the historic district can be found at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center (WDPAC). 2 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 018

Operating since 1923 as the Milane Theatre, the facility is located just steps away from the city’s Magnolia Squre. Considered by many to be the city’s crown jewel, WDPAC has long provided a myriad of entertainment options for the masses. While the facility has undergone significant repairs and upgrades to keep it’s polish, it still has managed to keep its historic heritage and charm. In 2001 the theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Seven years later, a generous financial donation from Wayne Densch Charities, Inc., led to the center’s current name. The theatre boasts a variety of quality performances and events from plays, concerts, Broadway-style shows and well-known

performers, to its own repertory and junior repertory productions And while there have been many renditions of the facility itself, one thing has remained constant: to maintain the facility’s mission to preserve the historic theatre while providing quality, affordable, entertainment that fosters regional talent, and kindles a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. WDPAC is kept running by a handful of passionate volunteers and managed by a Board of Directors. Auditions are open to anyone in the community who has a desire to act, sing, dance or learn the technical aspects of a live theatre production. “Make no mistake, this theatre belongs to the community and your expertise, assistance, contributions and engagement

To learn more about ways to lend a helping hand, visit www.wdpac.com, or reach out to managing director Debra Beardsley for all available options. Better yet, get engaged by attending the center’s annual fundraiser. Happening this January, the event features a 70’s disco theme of “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” Tickets are currently available for purchase. “As a community facility, your support is needed to ensure that the future of this historic jewel continues to function as the lifeblood of downtown Sanford,” says board president Sarah Reece,

who has been engaged as a board member for the last fifteen years. Reece adds that the center is always seeking ways to grow, including the addition of new board members. “It’s is our desire to grow the Board to include members that may not necessarily be lovers of the performing arts, but that represent the diversity of the community, have a desire to share their networking connections, and work to build an enthusiastic team that is ready to work and support those who volunteer their performance skills,” says Reece. If you’re unsure of committing yourself as a member of the board, consider a donation of your time, talent or treasure. The WDPAC supports a thriving theater community and its patrons by providing quality,

affordable performances, artistic opportunity and cultural awareness while preserving the rich history and beautiful architecture of the facility that gives back to the local economy and county. It is the crown jewel of historic Sanford and where My Sanford Magazine will proudly host the Best of Sanford Awards in January. Come join us!

hen songwriters pair their lyrics with music, they are painting an audio picture of an emotion or event in their lives they want to share with listeners.

This little piece of lyric should be a valuable lesson for photographers, many of whom are inclined to sit out inclement weather in the comfort of their homes, saving their expensive equipment from the unpredictability of nature.

6 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 018

WAYNE BENNETT

Similarly, when photographers create an image they are creating a visual capture of an emotion or event they have experienced and want to share with others. In their song “Stand A Little Rain,” the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band says, “If you ever want to see a rainbow, you got to stand a little rain.”

Not every day we face is a beautiful sunny day. Some days we have rain and some days we have fog or worse. Mother Nature does not always appear to be on our side…but is she? Should you look at inclement weather and give up the notion of going out and creating some viable images? Absolutely not! I especially take advantage of foggy conditions — the imagery created can be magical. Some of the most compelling images I’ve seen are images created in less than ideal weather conditions, conditions where the photographer should be out shooting, not sitting at home wishing the weather was better.

WAYNE BENNETT

Picturesque Sanford delivers the perfect opportunity to create viable images in less than ideal conditions. Sanford is a beautiful town, especially along the waterfront. A photographer can use the scenic setting to create wonderful images in less than ideal conditions, conditions which allow the photographer to capture the beauty of a post-rain rainbow or create an ethereal, moody image in foggy conditions. It’s your choice as a photographer as to how to handle inclement weather, but for me it’s a simple choice…go out…shoot…and create! Wayne Bennett (waynebennettphotography.com) has been a professional photographer for the past 25 years, specializing in nature photo-graphy. He enjoyed an association of about 15 years with the Great American Photography Weekend (GAPW), the toprated photo workshop group in the USA. Through GAPW, he had the opportunity to learn from and teach with the best of the best in nature photography. Wayne taught photography at Disney Institute in Orlando for five years. He shot stock photography for Sharpshooters, Corbis and Alamy Agencies and has been published in several publications, including Outdoor Photographer. He continues to teach photography through seminars, workshops and tours.

HOLIDAY

SHOP SMALL, SHOP LOCAL, SHOP SANFORD B Y K I M B E R LY J O N E S

I want to shop where everybody knows my name.

T

he seasons of giving are upon us! I really need no reason to shop, but holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries are the best excuse. And I love shopping— for family, friends, neighbors, or for me. I happen to even think cars look better with new tires and a spiffy new faucet for a kitchen is just grand. And we are constantly remodeling our old house, Casa Verdé. So, shopping is a must. Well, at least I think it is.

Sanford Flower Shop

And I have a thing for collecting small birds in ceramic, metal, or wire. Don’t even try to buy me one, though, because it’s got to be just right and there’s no rhyme or reason to it.

But don’t get me wrong. I’m a peculiar and particular kind of shopper who often buys nothing at all if the exact right thing is not to be found. My favorite color is certainly ‘patina’ and I love vintage, but I’m not about to go digging around in a box of old doorknobs in a stinky antique store to find something perfect. I don’t just love to go into a modern ‘big box’ store or stand for hours looking for a millionth of a centimeter replacement doodad for one of my husband’s old tools. That’s what Amazon Prime is for — search, click, and boom. Two days later, that doodad is sitting on our front porch. Which leaves more time for the kind of shopping that brings me true joy. Small, local shops are my therapy. Give me a store with unique, specially curated items and I will be the best customer. Especially if you remember me and call me by my name. Living in Sanford’s Residential Historic District means I can walk to some of my favorite stores. It’s a beautiful fall-ish day in our neighborhood, so let me slip on some comfy shoes and take you along to Shop Small with me. (If we find something big, we’ll go get the car.)

The first stop on our small shopping spree is the Sanford Flower Shop. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but so worth walking the extra block or so to get to Commercial Street from Sanford’s bustling 1st Street. Upon entering the store on this day before Halloween, giant eyeballs stare

from the display window and a ghostly greeter hangs at the door. Something fun has been going on in this gem of a store since 1956; Kitt and her staff perform magical transformations each season. The displays are being changed over to holiday glitter today, and soon there will be a Winter Wonderland of beautifully decorated trees. It’s always enough to transport the visitor to someplace chilly in our imagination which is a treat for us Floridians. I never know what to expect when I come in. Nor do I shop here with anything general in mind for anyone in particular, but almost always find something wonderful. And let’s not forget the flower shop part of the experience! You can always say it with flowers and rest assured, the florists here can create a one-of-a-kind arrangement your special one will remember forever. Today’s find: A decorative sphere for the living room at Casa Verdé that blends well with one of the treasured birds I found during a prior visit to Sanford Flower Shop.

THE ROSIE LEE CO.

COURTESY KIMBERLY JONES

111 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL 32771 321-315-1370; rosieleeco.com A shortcut across the parking lot brings us to The Rosie Lee Co. where the owner, Kim Issac, greets us warmly. Rosie Lee is British slang for tea and Kim enjoys bringing a strong vibe of jolly old England to Downtown Sanford. She’s recently added a tea bar and brews up a lovely cuppa (hot or cold) while we browse her selection of French soaps and ‘oddments’. Of course the word ‘oddments’ intrigued me when I first saw the sign out front a year or so ago. Teacups are in abundance, as you’d expect, but there’s always something new and innovative going on at this establishment. You sit and sip your specially made London Fog tea drink on one of the lovely antique chairs and take note of the towels and pillows all around. The store has recently joined the Sanford Art Walk on the third Thursday of every month. Kim is now featuring British art. Clever paintings of Mick Jagger and John Lennon peer down from the walls. Kim’s knowledge of teas and natural products is evident and one soon realizes she’s not just another pretty face! Her clever husband, who is a Brit, recently fashioned a gizmo from scratch to heat water at various temperatures to ensure the tea she serves is perfection. Mr. Isaac’s Peculiarly Wonderful Aqua Agitator is a joy to behold and you simply must stop by The Rosie Lee Co. for a truly delightful shopping experience. Today’s find: Even though Kim loves birds as much as I, there’s not one here for me today. I

do find a cute kitty mug and tea infuser combo for a friend in Atlanta who fancies cats. It will make a great Christmas prezzie if I can wait that long to send it to her.

JEANINE TAYLOR FOLK ART

211 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL 32771 407-323-2774; jtfolkart.com Strolling on down 1st Street, we arrive in the truly unique world of one of Sanford’s loveliest and most gracious people, Jeanine Taylor and her Folk Art Gallery. It’s not just about the art work at this gallery. Since the early 2000’s, Jeanine has taken great care to offer fun and creative items to treasure. She and her staff are busy with a fall to winter transition right now and her excitement is electric. She doesn’t hesitate to stop and show us what’s in store for the new season and her beloved French bulldog, Louie, tags along. (It’s hard to tell who works harder at promoting Sanford, Louis or Jeanine.) Ornaments and whimsical gifties are certainly in abundance and Jeanine mixes it well with the funky paintings and sculptures of the many varied folk artists who display their work all year long. Jeanine’s shows and open houses are fun, educational and always the talk of the town. I’ve found many gifts for family and friends here, and even enjoyed one of the painting classes within the building; Jeanine also operates the Gallery on First which consists of actual working studios where professional and emerging artists welcome the public. New to the experience of art collecting, Hubs and I have found a couple of beloved paintings and bringing them home to Casa Verdé results in great celebrations on my part.

with Maguire and became a devoted customer. Her sense of community is the driving force behind her business. A modern general store has to support local, well-crafted items that are bold and functional. And it has to create a welcoming atmosphere, so the door to Magpies is literally always open during business hours. Each month, a chalkboard calendar with handwritten community events adorns one of the large display windows out in front of the store. The merchandise constantly changes and reflects Maguire eclectically good taste. Quite often, there’s some little yummy to sample and you can buy one of the tastiest popsicles around. One of the things I love most about the store is the selection of gifts for men. It’s a definite stop for me around Valentine’s Day when I’m out of gift ideas for that guy in my life who never wants anything. Except a shaving brush. I found one at Magpies Modern General Store along with quite a supply of shaving soap. And he loves the decorative nails I bought him. And the whiskey glasses. (I know him like a book.) Today’s find: Okay, okay, I scored a bird for Casa Verdé’s living room collection. It’s both wire and metal, so I had to have it. With a name like Magpies, a bird purchase was bound to happen.

As we leave, we spy a particular bird painting that has a bit of that Casa Verdé gray/green in it. Kimberly Jones

Today’s find: Some great ideas for decorating and a certain bird painting I hope to find off the walls of Jeanine Taylor Folk Art and on the walls at Casa Verde.

MAGPIES MODERN GENERAL STORE

215 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL 32771 407-495-8549; magpiesmoderngeneral.com As we continue down the sidewalk you ask, “A modern general store! What is that?” Well, let’s just step into the world of Maguire Wise and find out. Two years ago, I drove through Downtown Sanford to take my first look at Casa Verdé and found Magpies Modern General Store. I immediately struck up a conversation

I have to wrap up our fun excursion and get home to cook dinner. There’s a lot more to the Shopping Sanford experience than I have space to write and I hope you’ll join me again soon. We’ll explore some other great places like the furniture store (Washburn’s) which turns into crafty cocktail bar at night (The Imperial) and a confectionary (Wondermade) where love and air combine to give you a fabulous marshmallow taste experience. I do want to note one last thing — since the businesses are small and the owners need a day off, most of the stores in Downtown Sanford are closed on Monday. You can do your other shopping then. n

PERSEVERANCE

Perseverance. A powerful element in fighting cancer. Edith Picallo has persevered through tough challenges in her 70 years – immigrating from Cuba, losing her husband to cancer, raising three kids alone and beating cancer twice. A new stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis had her wondering if she had what it took to beat it again. Her initial prognosis was severe – less than a year to live. But when she found Florida Cancer Specialists, her doctor conducted genomic testing to personalize her therapy. The result – her tumor shrank 47 percent in just six months. Now, three years after her diagnosis, Edith’s story shows that when hope and science join forces, great outcomes can happen. “Florida Cancer Specialists did a genetic test to determine the right medicine for me and my lung cancer, and it is working.”

n estate planning attorney’s job can generally be divided into two fields of work. One involves assisting with estate planning. An attorney will help with the drafting of last wills and testaments, powers of attorney, revocable trusts, deeds, and similar documents that deal with the transfer of a home, vehicles, and bank accounts. This is a relatively simple, inexpensive process. The second field of work involves helping the families of a deceased individual who has not prioritized estate planning. An attorney must help families navigate the Florida default guidelines (also known as Probate Court) following the occurrence of an inevitable passing. This is a relatively complicated, emotional, and expensive process. Trust me, it is far easier to make a plan before Florida makes one for you. As you enter a new year, make a resolution to tie up loose ends and do some basic estate planning. Any account that is financial in nature, whether it is an annuity, pension, savings account, or other financial account, will go through probate court if: 1) there is no other owner listed on the account; and 2) there is no listed beneficiary.

Pet CBD Oil HELPS WITH:  ANXIETY  PAIN  SEIZURES  INFLAMMATION

by HEMPWORX

Either listing someone on the account or adding a beneficiary will allow the other person access to the account. There will be no need to follow any will, or to have the asset transferred by the probate court. You have made a plan for this asset. So which option is right for you? In my experience, it is almost always adding a beneficiary. A caution regarding adding someone to any financial account: what you are doing is making that individual an owner — immediately. While it avoids probate, you are trusting them to not use the money for anything they desire. You have made them the legal owner, and as such, they may take everything out of the account at any time. Additionally, should they have creditors or be subject to a legal judgment, your asset may be at risk.

If you only desire someone to access the account in case of emergency, a simple Power of Attorney may be a useful tool, allowing a trusted friend, family member, or loved one access only if and when needed, but allowing you to retain all ownership of the account. If you need something more nuanced to handle multiple beneficiaries, consider a will or trust. Don’t forget to make a plan before Florida makes one for you!

Contrarily, adding a ‘beneficiary’ to an existing account removes any probate issues and keeps you in 100% control of the financial asset. Whether listed as a ‘Pay on Death,’ ‘In Trust For,’ or another like name, tie up these loose ends! Talk to your financial institution about your option, its free and easy to do.

hristmas is a wonderful time to call Sanford home. The weather is milder, we get the occasional cold snap, and there are so many events and activities that you have to plan carefully so you don’t miss anything! As the mother of two young children, I look forward to the Christmas season and the opportunity to relive my childhood through my children’s eyes. We may not have snow, but we have a charming and historic downtown that provides the perfect backdrop to an oldfashioned family Christmas.

After dinner, stop by the Magnolia Square Market around the corner for a slice of Bienenstich and Christstollen and Gluehwein to take home. The Holiday Tour of Homes is a wonderful event for those who are interested in seeing charming historic homes beautifully decorated for Christmas. The Sanford Illuminated Christmas Parade is a show-stopper. Arrive early and set up your chairs on First St., because the crowds can get thick! Grab a hot chocolate from Wondermade and snuggle your kiddos while the parade passes by, with floats, music, and candy. December 8th; 8pm. Lake Monroe’s Illuminated Christmas Parade is a fun activity for the entire family. Throw a blanket down at Veteran’s Memorial Park and enjoy prime viewing of this annual sailboat parade. December 8th; 6-9pm. Christmas is not the end of the holiday season – there’s that magical week between Christmas and New Year’s when you can slack off at work, overeat and drink (because your diet starts on January 2nd) and party with the out-of-towners you only get to see once a year. New Year’s Eve is typically thought of as an adult celebration, but there are a few familycentric places that you can go to celebrate. Airport Lanes offers both daytime and nighttime specials on New Year’s Eve for those that want to bowl with their family members and get a jump start on physical activity for the new year. December 31st; alomabowlingcenters. com/airport

Seminole Town Center is hosting a “Noon Year’s Eve for Kids” event at the mall food court. There will be a ball drop at 12 noon, and children can enjoy face painting and a snack. www.seminoletownecenter.com; December 31st; 11-12pm; FREE. If you find yourself at home on New Year’s Eve you can make your own fun — don’t forget to go outside and let the kids bang pots and pans at midnight! Every parent strives to create a special and memorable holiday season for their family, and it’s great to know it can be done without ever leaving our special little town!

You know the saying... Out with the old, in with the new, right?

by Licensed Interior Designer, Amber Clore, ASID | CAPS

Such is true in design, especially as we near the end of 2018. We begin to wonder which design trends are going have staying power and which will fade to the background. Some trends never completely go away, they simply let others have their moment. White kitchens, built in shelving and calming bedrooms, for example; these are design trends that have staying power. While micro trends like the ikat pattern, all white spaces, and the copper/rose gold craze have already begun to fizzle out.

What I am saying is... not all trends are created equal. There are some design elements that we will see move straight into the new year with ease. I have to mention this moment we are having with floral. Yes, floral. We (the a.team, of course) have been hinting at this questionable fashion since early spring when the trend was to be expected. Theres no more question, florals of all shapes and sizes have taken over the scene. Don't be afraid, embrace it. Another 2018 trend slipping into the new year is a twist on the Bohemian (boho) style vibes. They will remain earthy and organic, but come to life with pops of bold (preferably jewel toned) hues.

Amber Clore, ASID | CAPS

As we transition to our fresh start in January there will be a strong emphasis on creating a visual story within a space using pieces that create a conversation. Like wearing a a pair of statement shoes to an event, establishing a "why" for every space in your home will set the intention for the feeling, layout and flow it should receive. On a basic level, I think we are just craving comfortable, practical and attractive places to live, work and play. But, like it or not, large geometric back splash tiles in the kitchen and bath, light and natural wood tones, mixed metal lighting and accents, bold black walls in small spaces, and lots of intricate trimmings (aka "pessamenterie") are going to liven up our decor magazines come the new year. She brings a spirit of BOLD, this one. I'm not complaining a bit!

RIVERWALK'S FINAL TRAIL EXTENSION BEGINS BY LISA HOLDER

anford city officials and the city’s partners gathered in late October to break ground on construction of the final trail extension project for the city’s popular RiverWalk. This final phase means that residents and visitors will be able to walk, jog, or bike along 4.86 miles of RiverWalk on a trail that runs from Mellonville Avenue to just west of Interstate-4. The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the west end of the RiverWalk trail, directly across from Central Florida Regional Hospital. Attendees included representatives from Seminole County, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), MetroPlan Orlando, CPH and Wharton Smith. Funding for the final Phase III of the $28M Sanford RiverWalk final trail extension comes from the Seminole County Trails referendum, Seminole County One-Cent Sales Tax, FDOT and MetroPlan Orlando. Construction of Sanford’s $14 million-dollar RiverWalk seawall (a project awarded to Wharton-Smith) is the first phase in the extension. At almost

three-and-a-half miles long, stretching from Central Florida Regional Hospital on the east to County Road 15 and Interstate 4 to the west, the seawall will provide both protection and support for the final trail extension. Planned roadway and pedestrian improvements along West Seminole Boulevard (old U.S. 17-92) should begin later in the year. Designed utilizing complete streets and new urbanism principles, the RiverWalk will showcase and bolster the city’s efforts to increase and promote pedestrianism, walkability, and a healthy community. “The seawall groundbreaking event signifies the city and our partner’s investment in a world-class amenity,”said Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett. “When the final trail extension is complete, this project will catapult Sanford to a whole new level, adding to the premier quality of life our residents and visitors experience in our city.” City officials view the project as being of regional importance, critical to the connectivity of nearby communities and an integral part of the statewide bike and pedestrian network.

Located along beautiful Lake Monroe’s south shore, a state designated scenic highway, this project will provide one of the most pristine bike and pedestrian experiences second to none in Florida. Residents and visitors will reap the benefits of a spectacular view of Florida’s unique and unspoiled waterway, right here in Sanford. In addition, the RiverWalk final trail extension will feature traffic calming elements including roundabouts, lane narrowing, and complimentary streetscaping. The extension will also connect to Terwilliger Trail, increasing connectivity between State Road 46 to RiverWalk and reaching multi modal areas that include stops for Sunrail and Amtrak. MORE FACTS ABOUT RIVERWALK: • The trail is Florida’s longest inland shoreline and connects with over a thousand homes along the pristine St. Johns River. • This project will serve as a central link between many multi-modal connections

including Sunrail, the planned transportation oriented development, Seminole and Volusia County Trail system, State Road 429, and I-4. • It will connect communities to various tourism destinations including the Central Florida Zoo, and award-winning local parks and springs. • Not only will this project provide important innovative safety features for pedestrians, it will also encourage job growth and economic opportunities, while also connecting with CSX/Amtrak stops and many recreational facilities. With projects like this taking place in Sanford, it’s no wonder this city is hot right now with no signs of cooling down. www.sanfordfl.gov Lisa Holder is the Communications Officer for the City of Sanford. She began her classical dance training at Miriam and Valerie’s School of Dance Arts located off of Elm Avenue, where she trained in Ballet, Pointe, and other dance genres she incorporates into all her performances to this day. After touring with three different professional ballet companies, she settled back in Sanford and began dancing professionally with Phantasmagoria, where she met her husband John DiDonna, who portrays the character of “Byron.” One amazing aspect of performing in her hometown is being able to perform in the same venues as an adult that she started in as a child. “I returned to Sanford because it is my home,” says DiDonna. “I am one of those people who loved where I grew up, nowhere else felt right.” Things came full circle when Dion became a teacher at the school where she was trained, and which is now called School of Dance Arts of Sanford. “That is also like coming home. I walk into the space and know this is where I have always belonged. Because of that, the creativity just flows!” A few years ago, she and her husband moved into the home of her childhood dreams right in downtown Sanford. 20 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 018

Pop Warner football and travel baseball was also there for those who could afford it. Q: YOU HAVE DEDICATED OVER 13 YEARS IN THE MINISTRY. TELL US WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? A: I am blessed and honored that God called me in this position. I have a heart for people and want right for everyone. I have seen how powerful God is when you do things that are pleasing to him as well when you don’t. I believe that this will also make me a better commissioner for our city.

J.P. PHOTOGRAPHY

Q: YOU HAVE BEEN ELECTED COMMISSIONER FOR THE CITY OF SANFORD. WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES IN THIS ROLE? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY?

Williams me brindó esta gran oportunidad, ella me mostró que podría ayudar a toda una ciudad. Q: AS A COACH/MENTOR TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION AND NOW AS A CITY COMMISSIONER, WHAT ARE SOME WORDS OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO OUR READERS?

A: There are many responsibilities in this role, but I believe that if I take care of these the others will fall into place. Those responsibilities include to make sure I govern the rules and laws of the state, and to be open and work with ALL the citizens of my district and the city as a whole. I have always looked for ways to help more of our citizens. But then this wonderful opportunity was brought to me by the great Dr. Velma Hayes Williams. She showed me that I could help a whole city.

A: I believe that God allowed me to be in other positions to prepare me for this great position. I tell people all the time that my childhood — being a little boy born and raised in Goldsboro with my grandparents helping my mother — shows that no matter what the obstacles are, you can still be whatever you want.

P: FUISTE ELEGIDO COMISIONADO DE LA CIUDAD DE SANFORD. ¿QUÉ RESPONSABILIDADES DERIVAN DE ESE ROL? ¿QUÉ TE INSPIRÓ A SERVIR A TU COMUNIDAD?

A DINING GUIDE TO

DOWNTOWN SANFORD BY LEON KONIECZNY

O

ne thing that Downtown Sanford does not lack is a wide variety of places to eat. There is something downtown for nearly every budget and taste. From a high-dollar perfectly cooked steak to an inexpensive gyro or a $4 slice of NY style pizza, you can find it in downtown Sanford. Whether your food cravings have you setting out as early as 6:30am or closing the night down at midnight, an establishment can always be found open, seven days a week. And there is plenty available to chase it down – from coffee, to wine, to locally brewed beer, and more. Sanford has it all. The premier fun spot is Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café, a staple of downtown for over 15 years. You’ll aways find a crowd here enjoying the good food, cold beer, and live entertainment. Plan ahead, as reservations are needed most weekend nights. For a more refined, high-end dining experience, Sanford is fortunate to have three great choices: The Tennessee Truffle, The District, and The Smiling Bison. That number is slated to go up late this year with the opening of The Old Jailhouse.

OPPOSITE PAGE AND TOP: PARK AVENUE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO; RIGHT: COURTESY THE DISTRICT; BOTTOM: COURTESY LEON KONIECZNY

On the other end of the spectrum, you can get a delicious, fresh, made-while-you-wait sandwich at several places, including Taste of Thyme, Magnolia Market, Moon’s Subs, Mr. Z’s, and Corner Café. Looking for more of a supper club atmosphere and fare? Try St. John’s River Steak and Seafood (and enjoy the stunning views) or The Breezeway. Then there is also great home cooking and plenty of it. Shantell’s, Colonial Room (a great diner and another long-time Sanford staple), and Christo’s, all excel at good home cooking. Sanford also enjoys a number of specialty places including El Zocalo for Mexican food, Zorba’s for Greek and Italian food, Fuel for the best BBQ around, and Negril Spice for Jamaican food. Of course, everyone loves pizza, and there are many good choices as well: Riverwalk Pizzeria, Mr. Z’s, Zorba’s, and Christo’s. You can even get a gourmet specialty pizza at The Smiling Bison. Sanford also has plenty of bars with food, featuring everything from light bites and appetizers to full-on, restaurant meals making them more and more restaurants with a bar. Be sure to check out Wop’s Hops (Sanford’s first micro-brewery), West End, Celery City Craft, Buster’s Belgian Bistro, Sanford Brewing Company, Luisa’s Cellar, The Imperial, Tuffy’s, and Deviant Wolfe (in partnership with their

The Smiling Bison

neighboring restaurants). And the latest addition to this lineup is The Sullivan, an Irish pub. Following a vegetarian lifestyle? Roots Raw Juice Bar has you covered. You can also get a great vegetarian meal simply by asking at Zorba’s, Christo’s, and a number of other places. If dessert is your thing, check out the dessert cases at Christo’s or the Colonial Room, and be sure to try the homemade marshmallows and ice cream found at Wondermade. For coffee, try Palate or Luisa’s Cellar. Is that all? Not really, Sanford is growing and changing by leaps and bounds. Along with the openings of The Sullivan and The Old Jailhouse, there is Henry’s Depot — a collective of boutique eateries set to open soon. Plus, there are more plans in development for other new establishments. And we’ve not even covered the many fine places just to get a drink. Whatever it is that you’re searching for — be it fast, cheap, good, vegan, high-end take-out or pizza — whatever you desire you can find in Sanford. Finally, here is my best of the best list, a curation of my personal favorites to be found at some of these fine places: • Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café - schnitzels and sausages • The Smiling Bison - poutine • The Tennessee Truffle - sausage gravy and biscuits • The District - ahi tuna tacos • Mr. Z’s - buffalo chicken cheesesteak • And for the best happy hour - The District and The Smiling Bison These are just a few of my top favorites as of today. Tomorrow I may find something new to fall in love with. I love eating and drinking

The District

everywhere in Sanford, because everywhere has something great and unique. Whatever your taste is, you’ll find it here in beautiful, historic, downtown Sanford.

Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford and Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past seven years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks — in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

‘Tis the Season for

WHISKEY

BY DRINK SANFORD

Once newbies to the craft, we cut our teeth on many different types of whiskey at The Imperial in Sanford. There we met Marti and Dick Waters, owners and distillers at Palm Ridge Whiskey in Umatilla, who explained to us the best way to taste whiskey — carefully and methodically — to truly savor the flavor. Step 1: Begin by capturing a small amount of whiskey in your mouth and keep it at the tip of your tongue behind your bottom teeth. Step 2: With your mouth slightly open, inhale a slow stream of air across your tongue; you will experience different layers of the whiskey. 28 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 018

Step 3: Lift your tongue to move the whiskey back to the middle part of your tongue to activate different taste buds. Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 a couple of times to compare and contrast flavors. Step 5: Finish by taking the whiskey up and over the top of your tongue (not allowing it to go under the tongue) and then swallow.

TIPS AND TRICKS • The same technique can also be used for other spirits. Try it with rum or tequila. • Don’t let the whiskey slip below your tongue as that is where the burning sensation comes from. • It’s never improper to add a few drops of water or an ice cube to your whiskey. Adding water helps “open” the whiskey, releasing new aromas and flavors.

DRINK SANFORD

W

hile whiskey is certainly suited to any season, most would agree the bold, brown spirit especially pairs well with chilly nights around the Yule log. Bourbon, Rye, Scotch, or Irish, served neat or in a cocktail --there’s no wrong way to enjoy a whiskey.

Make It At Home The hot toddy is a classic drink that includes all the hallmarks of a good cocktail, with the added benefits of fending off the chill of winter and a sore throat. You’ll need: ¾ cup water 1 ½ ounces whiskey 2 to 3 teaspoons honey, to taste 2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice, to taste 1 lemon slice 1 cinnamon stick (optional, for garnish)

LEFT: ADOBE STOCK; RIGHT: DRINK SANFORD

In a teapot or saucepan, bring water to a simmer and pour into a mug. Add whiskey, 2 teaspoons of honey, and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir until honey dissolves. Add more honey or lemon to taste. Garnish with lemon slice and a cinnamon stick. Drink Sanford is an art project that celebrates the craft, history, and the people on both sides of the bar in Sanford, Florida. Buster's Bistro

The Smiling Bison

BRUNCH

IN DOWTOWN SANFORD

BY LEON KONIECZNY

B L-R: COURTESY BUSTER'S BISTRO; COURTESY THE SMILING BISON; COURTESY CHRISTO'S

runch is defined as a meal usually taken late in the morning or early afternoon that combines a late breakfast and an early lunch, often done on a weekend. While Sanford has great breakfast and lunch choices every day of the week, we also have some excellent choices for brunch on weekends. If brunch plans have you heading out on a Saturday, then look no further than The Smiling Bison. Start off your visit with a refreshing mimosa, followed by some delicious choices from the establishment’s eclectic menu. Among my favorites is the breakfast poutine — think poutine with smoked bacon, fried potatoes, onions, and cheese curds, topped with a localsourced fried egg. Another menu favorite is the breakfast burrito, featuring house-smoked bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, cheese, eggs, and more, sitting on a bed of southwestern refried beans. There are other great choices on the menu as well, so embrace the leisurely pace of Saturday brunch and peruse all options before making your final selection. The number of restaurants in our area offering selective brunch menus naturally increases on Sunday. The premier Sunday brunch spot is Buster’s Bistro where you can find an everchanging menu served in a Belgian Beer bar. My

favorite — though no longer on the menu as of this writing — was the breakfast pierogi: a cheese and potato pierogi topped with scrambled eggs and bacon bits, sitting on a bed of a delicious red pepper sauce. For a more traditional brunch item, try the Buster’s Belgium Benedict: a semitraditional eggs benedict that is served on a Belgian waffle instead of an English muffin and accompanied with breakfast fried potatoes. Dining at Buster’s is also a bargain with various brunch items offered for only $8. For a more traditional diner experience, try the Colonial Room’s breakfast buffet. The resturant’s “all you can eat” selection offers typical breakfast fare: scrambled eggs, biscuits, sausage and bacon, and sausage gravy. And with all you can eat, you know you’ll never leave hungry. Tuffy’s Bottle Shop & Lounge is the new kid on the block for brunch offerings. With a huge outdoor patio and large indoor space, Tuffy’s changes up the theme of its brunch offerings each week. From Orlando Meats, to BBQ, to their own Da Kine Poke, every Sunday’s brunch menu may be different, but it’s always a popular place. Check their Facebook page to learn what will be offered from week to week. A new offering in town is the once-a-month Sunday brunch at The Higgins House, a

Christo's

wonderful dining experience delivered in a beautifully restored victorian bed and breakfast, and served by local favorite, Chef Sennet Williams. This small, intimate setting brings fine dining to the Sanford brunch scene. Reservations are required, and you’ll be glad you visited, as this is an upscale experience not to be missed. A once a month “for charity” brunch is now being held at Celery City Craft. This cooperative event features the melding of the talents of The Smiling Bison and Chef Nat Russell of The Tennessee Truffle. First launched in November 2018, this event takes place on the patio of Celery City with proceeds donated to a local charity. To find out when the next brunch occurs, follow the restaurants’ social media channels. And last, but certainly not least, Christo’s is open early every Sunday — and Sunday only — for their unique brunch offerings. I admit I have yet to eat there on a Sunday, but it is on my list and has been highly recommended by many local friends. There are many great brunch choices to be found in Sanford. I encourage you to try at least one and let me know what you think. You can’t go wrong eating in beautiful, historic, downtown Sanford. Trust me! n

RACKS BILLIARDS

SPORTS BAR AND GRILL REVIEW BY RACHEL SAMMONS

R

acks Billiards Sports Bar and Grill is not like any other pool hall with neon lights and covered windows. The inside sets it apart from any pool room you’ve seen before! The air is clear of smoke and upbeat hits play from a lit-up jukebox. The owners, Pedro and Tony explain to me, they created a sports Bar feel with an emphasis on different types of entertainment and Pool. Racks is definitely a neat place to visit. The back patio includes an area to play soccer pool. A new concept that combines pool and soccer on a giant pool table! The tabletops can quickly be converted into a poker game. Everyone is encouraged to have some fun and join their pool and dart tournaments Mondays-Thursdays.

As for the food, it goes beyond your average expectation from a bar and grill. The scratch-kitchen meals are prepared with fresh, quality ingredients— notably, their cheese and sourdough Parm bread. Their white pizza made with alfredo sauce, ham pieces, and homemade crust is to die for! It’s as creamy and oregano-y as the menu promises, but my favorite part is the crisp, thin crust. The Chicago-pizza-lover in me is impressed. Not to mention, their beer menu includes the best local crafts from the Sanford Brewing Company. Racks appeals to me on a personal level as I used to work at another locallyowned bar and grill, and I loved the camaraderie between the customers and staff. Racks is very similar as the owner and employees mingle with patrons and make them feel welcome. This is an enjoyable place for families to come together and have some fun. Racks Billiards is Sanford’s hidden treasure. n
