SANFORD’S BEST & SEMINOLE’S FINEST CELEBRATING

A NIGHT OF COMMUNITY, CONNECTION, AND CELEBRATION AT THE 9th ANNUAL BEST OF SANFORD

The 9th Annual Best of Sanford lit up the historic Ritz Theater in Downtown Sanford on September 16th, honoring Seminole County’s excellence and the city’s spirit. Presented by My Sanford Seminole Magazine, the gala drew community and business leaders, volunteers in formal attire, pausing for that red carpet moment.

A cocktail reception preceded the awards, spotlighting Arajet as the newest airline at Orlando Sanford International Airport. Arajet’s inaugural flight from Sanford took place on

October 26th to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Among the attendees were representatives from Sanford’s sister city, Deltona. “This is always a great event,” said Deltona Mayor Santiago Avila Jr.

Returning emcees Amber Clore-Morales and Derrick Andre Daniels brought their signature energy, guiding the audience through winners across categories from arts to dining. This year’s featured guest was local TV personality Steve “Trooper Steve” Montiero. Our traditional guest emcee, Omayra La Bella, reigned on the red carpet. In all, more than 50 awards were celebrated: Arts & Culture, Beauty, Health & Wellness, Food, Drink & Dining Experiences, Services & Community, plus two top ten lists: Best of Downtown Sanford and Best of Seminole.

Special guests, Dawn Kraus, President of Leadership Seminole and Dr. John Gyllin,

Vice President of the Seminole State College Foundation, presented three prestigious honors:

• Trailblazer Award: Sheriff Dennis Lemma

• Industry of the Year: Arajet Airlines

• Lifetime Achievement: Seminole State College of Florida

Sanford Mayor Art Woodruff presented Perla Bello-Crosby—Editor-in-Chief, Founder, and Publisher of My Sanford Seminole Magazine with a key to the city and proclaimed September 16 as Best of Sanford Day.

Senator Rick Scott echoed Mayor Woodruff’s praise thanking Ms. Crosby for "honoring the dedicated leaders, businesses and organizations that help create opportunities for Floridians in the Central Florida community." This event continues to be one that all look forward to year after year.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

As a proud Dominican in Central Florida, my heart is complete. More than three years ago, I interviewed Víctor M. Pacheco about his dream to link the Dominican Republic and Sanford. On Sunday, October 26, that dream touched down at Orlando Sanford International Airport. Arajet’s first flight is about family, culture, and opportunity. ¡Qué orgullo dominicano! This new bridge belongs to all of us.

Dear Readers,

What a wonderful evening we shared celebrating the ninth anniversary of Best of Sanford. It was emotional, historic, and joyous, especially as we welcomed Arajet, the Dominican airline inaugurating service on October 26.

Seeing the Sanford Airport Authority Chairman of the Board, Kenneth Bentley, and Seminole County Vice Chair/Commissioner, Andria Herr, welcome Arajet VP Manuel Luna to the stage with a warm embrace and a few beats of merengue was pure joy. With board members, the full leadership team, and President & CEO Nicole Martz present, their message was clear: Arajet is rekindling international connections at Orlando Sanford International Airport. Fittingly, they received our unanimous Industry of the Year Award, presented by Mayor Art Woodruff, who also issued an official proclamation welcoming them and recognizing Best of Sanford Day.

All night long, winners crossed the stage at the Ritz Theater, a venue that shines brighter with each edition of this celebration, lifting up the small businesses and industries of Sanford and Seminole County alike.

As a proud Dominican naturalized American, my heart was already full. And then came an honor I will never forget: the Key to the City, which I humbly received from the City of Sanford Mayor and Commissioners. I dedicate this recognition to my family and to the many Hispanics who come to this great nation to give their best. Above all, I dedicate it to the Sanford community, which has opened its arms and hearts to me for so many years, sharing a vision of a diverse, joyful city, rich in talent and history, welcoming both locals and visitors from around the world.

A wonderful new chapter begins. May we all give thanks to God for this opportunity and continue building together. As President John F. Kennedy reminded us: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Thank you!

ELSA LACUNA BRINGS STYLE AND HEART TO SANFORD and Love, Laughter Fashion

Infectious laughter — that’s what you experience when you meet Elsa Lacuna! The dynamic Filipina entrepreneur has spread joy and love across the globe, and now she brings it to historic downtown Sanford.

BOLD MOVES, BIG LOVE

What began as an online store in 2023, Love Fashion & More emerged into a 1,000-square-foot brick-and-mortar store. The store, which recently celebrated its grand opening, is a reflection of its owner’s love for fashion, business, and most importantly, people. You’ll find clothing, accessories, luggage, and gift items. Soon, Elsa will be featuring her own brand, but for now, you’ll find items from designers such as Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer. As a special touch, Elsa’s collection

of handbags from designers like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci is on display.

Ever the businesswoman, after graduating from college in her native Philippines with a degree in Business Administration, Elsa’s first business was as a wholesaler of gas, Coke and Pepsi products, and rice. Other ventures included Lacuna Mini

PETE WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Mart, Sweet Corner Ice Cream House & Restaurant, Lacuna Music Center & Sporting Goods and Lips Salon, where services ranged from hair styling, make-up, and facials.

While Elsa loves the Philippines, she also loves her new homeland. After moving to the U.S. in 2006, she became a U.S. citizen in 2010. Not long after moving to Sanford, she started working at Dillard’s in the Seminole Town Center. While a single mother of her daughter, Kristina, Elsa worked long hours and holidays. Her hard work and sales acumen earned her a spot as a top producer and responsibility for the high-end men’s department. However, after 18 years of giving her heart and soul, Elsa left the department store to focus on her own business. “I got to the point where I didn’t want to work for others,” Elsa explained.

FULL LIFE, OPEN HEART

Elsa will tell you she is at a point in her life where she is enjoying the “flexibility of me time and celebrating her life.” She wants to travel more, even though she has already experienced 52 countries, and Switzerland, her favorite, five times. Having inherited her father’s green thumb, you can spot her landscaping at her Sanford home. Other interests include cooking, painting flowers and ocean scenes, and sports.

The grandmother of three is an “avid tennis player” who also enjoys reliving her younger years as a basketball player when she’s shooting hoops with her grandson. Her other activ-

ities include kayaking on the Wekiva River or cycling around the area. Both of which work up her appetite for her favorite pastime—dining out at one of Sanford’s restaurants.

In addition to her love of people, fashion, and an active lifestyle, Elsa also has a heart for service. In the Philippines, she became an active member of Rotary when customers who

frequented her ice cream parlor and restaurant encouraged her to join. A natural leader and go-getter, Elsa served as Club President and received numerous awards. Helping 1,243 students gain access to a college education in computer literacy is a project still close to her heart. Now in her adopted home, she continues her commitment to the community as a member of the Rotary Club of Sanford and the Sanford Chamber of Commerce.

As she prepares to celebrate 60 this December, Elsa’s journey spans continents, ventures, and communities, but what remains constant is how Elsa lives with style and intention. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. See for yourself at Love Fashion & More located at 106 S. Palmetto Ave. in downtown Sanford. n

ARAJET'S HISTORIC ARRIVAL:

VICTOR M. PACHECO EXPANDS THE SKIES OVER ORLANDO SANFORD INTERNATIONAL

AIRPORT

When Arajet’s inaugural flight from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, landed on October 26 at Orlando Sanford International Airport, it marked the airline’s debut, and the return of international service in a new era, to the Sanford area, opening a nonstop bridge between Central Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

For Founder and CEO Victor M. Pacheco, the Sanford launch represents both national pride and strategic growth. “This is extremely important because Orlando is one of the main tourist cities in the United States, and Punta Cana is the same in the Caribbean, so we anticipate extraordinary traffic,” said Pacheco.

A Connection Built

In just three years, Arajet has grown from an ambitious start-up into the third-largest airline in passenger traffic in the Dominican Republic. “We have become a leading airline recognized for the high quality of our service,” Pacheco noted. “We won the award for Best New Airline in the World in 2023, and this year we will fly more than 1.5 million passengers.”

As the flag carrier and largest airline of the Dominican Republic, Arajet operates low-cost

flights throughout North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The new route directly links Sanford with Punta Cana, a resort town on the country’s eastern tip known for its world-class resorts. The airline continues to expand its

international footprint. Pacheco’s next goal is to consolidate the U.S. market and position the Dominican Republic as “the new air hub of the Americas.”

Beyond logistics, Arajet’s purpose runs deep. The significant diaspora — people from the DR and other Latin American countries who now live in Central Florida — will now be able to maintain close ties to their homelands more easily. “It’s the reason our airline exists,” Pacheco explained. “I wanted to create an airline that makes it easier for people to feel closer to their homelands.”

With more than 70,000 Dominicans living in the Orlando area, the airline expects strong

Founder and CEO

local demand. It also sees opportunity among U.S. tourists seeking affordable Caribbean destinations. “Florida is the second U.S. state, after New York, that contributes the most tourists to the Dominican Republic,” Pacheco added. “With this route, we want to strengthen tourism to the area and work with Sanford Airport to make it a popular option for all travelers.”

A Warm Welcome

At every level, Arajet’s identity is rooted in its service culture, where professionalism meets Dominican hospitality. “Our most important differentiator is the warmth of our service,” Pacheco said. “From the moment you arrive at the Arajet counter to the merengue or bachata music you hear onboard, our crew personally welcomes each passenger.”

Arajet currently plans three weekly flights between Punta Cana and Sanford, with the goal of daily service as the route grows. “Next year, we’ll receive six new aircraft, which will enable us to increase frequencies.”

That ambition has not gone unnoticed. At Sanford’s Annual Gala Awards ceremony, Sanford Mayor Art Woodruff presented Arajet with

the Industry of the Year 2025 award. The city also issued an official proclamation celebrating the airline’s arrival. “It was a surprise when we received the news, but we accepted it with great humility and gratitude,” Pacheco said. “It was also a sign that this route will be historic for the people of Sanford and Orlando.”

Introducing global service to a facility that already handles more than three million domestic passengers each year was only possible through partnership. “The Orlando Sanford Airport has treated Arajet exceptionally well, so we are extremely excited to make history together.”

A Dream Taking Flight

With its recent October launch, Arajet brings much more than low fares: it has brought a sense of home for thousands of people and new tourism opportunities for Central Florida. n

For Pacheco, connecting Sanford to the Caribbean fulfills a lifelong vision. “It is another piece of the dream of making my country a key player in aviation across the continent,” he reflected. “When we decided to fly to Sanford, I was surprised we would be the only international airline operating there. That is both a challenge and a privilege.”

SANFORD MEANS BUSINESS

A Strategic Hub with an Exceptional Quality of Life

Sanford means business. As one of Central Florida’s most connected cities, it has become a strategic hub for industries and entrepreneurs while offering an exceptional quality of life. With strategic incentives, modern infrastructure and a thriving community, Sanford is where growth and opportunity meet.

T ake Pro-Business, Globally Connected

Industries and entrepreneurs find a welcoming environment, supported by targeted city and county programs that encourage capital investment and job creation by the private sector. This pro-business approach has attracted a wide range of employers and continues to promote smart growth with a focus on corporate partnerships that benefit the quality of life in Sanford by becoming net contributors, rather than drawing on public services. The Sanford Industrial Park, developed by the Industrial Development Corporation, drives this growth by providing modern infrastructure for logistics, light manufacturing, and warehousing.

Connectivity on the transportation front adds to the appeal of corporations developing operations in Sanford. With direct access to air, rail, and major highways, the City is a natural hub for

distribution and trade. As a primary gateway to the greater Central Florida area, Sanford is one of the best-connected cities in a region experiencing constant growth and redevelopment opportunities. Air travel from Sanford is refreshingly simple and airport leadership is committed to expanding route offerings, domestic and abroad. Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) offers travelers an enjoyable and stressfree experience, with no heavy traffic and no long lines. From SFB, travelers can reach more than 70 destinations across the United States, along with the expansion of international connections to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic,

and other key Latin American hubs.

Sanford is also connected to other major cities on the eastern seaboard by land and rail. That’s right, Sanford is home to Amtrak’s Auto Train Station, one of only two in the country, offering direct passenger and vehicle service to and from Lorton, Virginia. The city’s proximity to the I-95 corridor places Sanford in the sights of countless businesses looking to work on the east coast, and particularly in the south. Today, a diverse economy thrives in the city, with healthcare, education, aviation, and hospitality among the key sectors that are already well-established.

Sanford Civic Center
Orlando Sanford International Airport

Healthy Community, Strong Future

Alongside its economic growth, Sanford invests in the people who call it home, strengthening healthcare, education, and workforce training for today, and well into the future. This commitment is clear in a new emergency hospital and a strong network of medical facilities that provide spectacular care to residents and visitors alike. Families also have excellent educational choices, from highly rated public schools to respected private institutions, both K-12 and technical school options are abundant.

The city is home to the main campus of Seminole State College of Florida, part of the Florida College System. The college offers associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, technical certificates, and continuing education programs. It is also a leader in workforce development, providing specialized training in healthcare, information technology, construction, business, and aviation. This pipeline of skilled talent supports local industries and promotes future growth in a number of industrial fields.

Historic Downtown and recreational spaces add to its appeal as a place to live, work, and grow. The Downtown District blends quaint charm with modern vitality. The brick storefronts and restored landmarks speak to the city’s past, while lively breweries, art galleries, and a wide range of restaurants result in dynamic energy that point to the future. Together, these destinations create a gathering place filled with festivals, concerts and cultural events yearround.

Abundant Recreation, Connected Community

Just as investments in healthcare and education strengthen Sanford’s future, the city’s lively

The Sanford Riverwalk situated along Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River is another highlight, with miles of scenic trails for walking, jogging, and biking, plus waterfront views, picnic areas, playgrounds, and access to boating and fishing. Families and visitors also enjoy the nearby Sanford Museum, Veterans Memorial Park and the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, a regional favorite that adds to Sanford’s rich mix of recreational options.

Meanwhile, surrounding neighborhoods continue to expand with new residential communities, providing attractive options for young professionals, families, and retirees alike. This sense of growth, and Sanford’s welcoming community, greet visitors from far and wide.

Visitors find plenty of ways to feel at home in Sanford. Convenient hotels sit just minutes away, while downtown also offers Airbnb rentals that let you live like a local, nestled in one of the unique neighborhoods that call Sanford home. Exploring is part of the fun, or as we call it in Sanford, “Sanfording.” The City embraces its golf cart culture, giving guests and residents

a relaxed and playful way to cruise between breweries, shops, and the Riverwalk.

Sanford means business, but it also means more — a connected community, an active lifestyle, and a place where opportunity takes root. Here in Sanford, growth isn’t just possible, it is an expected reality! n

Dear Kristen, I’ve started noticing fine lines on my forehead and some loss of volume in my cheeks. Friends keep suggesting Botox and fillers, but I’m nervous about looking frozen or overdone. What should I know before trying injectables?

— Curious but Cautious

Dear Curious,

Great question — doing your research is the smartest first step! Here are the basics I share with new patients:

Toxin vs. Filler: BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes muscles to smooth facial lines like frown lines, forehead lines and/ or crow’s feet. Dermal Fillers restore volume in areas like cheeks or lips, soften deeper folds and contours chin and jawlines to restore youthfulness.

How Long It Lasts: BOTOX® Cosmetic results last 3–4 months; dermal fillers last 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product and area of treatment.

Looking “Over Done”: A skilled injector's goal is to provide natural, refreshed results. We start conservatively and adjust as needed.

Think of injectables as subtle enhancements — the best work leaves you looking like yourself, just more rested.

Q: I’ve lost weight with GLP-1 and now have hollowing in my temples and under-eyes. How can I restore volume?

Q: My lips feel dehydrated and have lost volume, but I don’t want oversized lips. Can you treat lips with just half a syringe?

A: Absolutely. Lip treatments are completely customizable. Many patients benefit from a conservative approach, such as using half a syringe to restore hydration and subtle volume without altering their natural profile. Kristen-Anne Thomas, MSN-FNPBC, specializes in “Baby Lips” — a technique

and Juvederm Volbella (for

designed to rehydrate and rejuvenate lips while maintaining a soft, natural look.

Q: I feel fatigued, tired, and foggy. I’m too young for menopause, but I can’t seem to feel energized or well-rested. What options do I have to feel better?

A: At Reviv Beauty Medspa, we offer a curated collection of clean peptide therapies designed to restore balance and vitality. Peptides can improve sleep quality, support skin elasticity and hydration, calm anxiety, reduce inflammation, enhance memory, sharpen focus, and strengthen mitochondrial function for sustained energy. Each treatment plan is fully customized, with your progress closely monitored, to help you feel like your best self again.

Bottom line: Your first injectable appointment should feel collaborative, not pressured. Start conservatively, ask questions, and work with Kristen-Anne Thomas, MSN-FNP-BC, who prioritizes natural, refreshed results. The best outcomes come from a true partnership between patient and injector.

Beyond injectables, Reviv Beauty Medspa also offers Regenerative Medicine, Medical Weight Loss, and Advanced Microneedling — a comprehensive approach to help you look and feel your absolute best, inside and out. ❧

Celebrating Sanford’s Rising Stars

This year’s winners remind us that Sanford continues to grow in both quality and variety. From culinary creativity to community care, the surprises delighted everyone! Alebrije Mexican Restaurant earned cheers for its authentic flavors

and warm atmosphere, proving that passion and heart can turn a local eatery into a city favorite.

A standout newcomer, Brewlando Brewing, brings fresh energy to the former Sanford Brewing Company location. As the official craft beer of UCF Athletics, they’re already achieving success, and this year they captured Best Microbrewery in Sanford! It’s a great accomplishment for new owners and a big win for Sanford’s ever-rising craft scene.

Among our shining stars, Sunshine Pharmacy continues to stand out for its commitment to health and community. With two locations serving Sanford and Longwood, their personal means to care for neighbors like family is what sets them apart.

Each of these honorees, and many more, represent the spirit of Sanford: diverse, dynamic, and dedicated to excellence. Here’s everyday heroes who make Sanford not just a place to live, but a place to EXPERIENCE!

For more than eight years, Sunshine Pharmacy has proudly served our community with exceptional pharmaceutical care and genuine compassion. Family-owned by Paul and Channi Sodhi, Sunshine is known for personalized service, trusted advice, and a true commitment to patient well-being.

BEST MICROBREWERY BREWLANDO SANFORD:

Brewlando has become a staple of Central Florida’s craft beer scene, recognized for its creativity, community spirit, and award-winning brews. Winning Best Microbrewery at this year’s Best of Sanford celebration highlights the passion and purpose behind every pint they pour.

Born from a moment of compassion, Brewlando began when its founders helped displaced brewery staff find stability and purpose. That gesture of kindness evolved into a mission to build a brewery grounded in connection, creativity, and community. Today, their taprooms welcome guests with warmth, innovation, and a sense of belonging.

Sanford is home to Brewlando’s innovation hub, where the team experiments with small-batch brews and collaborations that push craft beer’s boundaries. Their signature Jernigan’s Hazy IPA— juicy, tropical, and smooth—has become a fan favorite both locally and at UCF’s football stadium.

Outside the brewhouse, Brewlando supports initiatives like Ales for ALS, the Sanford Sizzlin’

Summer Program, and their Foster Children’s Holiday Tree Drive—using their platform to connect people and give back.

The partnership is official: Brewlando is the Official Craft Beer of UCF Athletics and has launched its new Brew-CF game-day line to capture the energy and pride of Knight Nation. They’re also debuting limited-edition beers that celebrate Central Florida’s heritage. As Brewlando continues to grow, one thing remains unchanged—their commitment to people, place, and purpose. Whether a longtime local or a firsttime visitor, you’re invited to raise a glass, share a story, and be part of the Brewlando journey.

65 AND READY

Our Editor Shares Her Medicare Journey

This year, the editor of My Sanford Seminole Magazine, Perla Bello-Crosby, turned 65, a joyful moment filled with gratitude and reflection. Perla didn’t grow up with Medicare as part of her world. Born in the Dominican Republic, she never had to think about this program until she became eligible. This experience inspired her to speak out so others in the community, especially those unfamiliar with the U.S. healthcare system, can be better prepared

Perla’s Advice for Others Turning 65 to Help Navigate this Journey:

1 . Mark Your Calendar Early: Set reminders months in advance so you don’t miss enrollment dates.

2 . Ask Questions: If you didn’t grow up with knowledge about this topic or perhaps you aren’t familiar with the U.S. healthcare system, don’t be afraid to seek guidance. Seek help from licensed advisors or senior-focused care centers, who can make the process much easier to understand.

4 . Don’t Wait: Even if you feel healthy, delaying enrollment can create future problems.

5 . Share the Knowledge: Talk to friends and family so more people avoid confusion or costly mistakes.

“I want others to know that Medicare is automatically gifted without a proper enrollment, but you have to be proactive to ensure you don’t miss out on all the benefits of this program.”

Perla shares her story as both a personal journey and a community reminder: don’t miss your Medicare deadlines. For her, the process was a learning experience. For readers, it’s a chance to get ahead, be informed, and approach turning 65 with confidence! n

3 . Compare Options: Look at your prescriptions, preferred doctors, and budget before deciding between Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Understanding the various options available will help you make this decision. Part A covers hospital care, Part B covers doctor visits and preventive services, and Part D helps with prescriptions.

The right primary care provider makes all the difference – make sure your Medicare plan supports your care needs.
