KapaHaka group The photo above says it all - a great representation of all our year groups from across the school. Della, Kiri and Amy did a great job together in leading and supporting our children as they took the opportunity to perform and enjoy the Civic Polyfest experience. Thank you to them and all our parents on the day who supported our children as they enjoyed that wonderful cultural performance. Create and Refine In case you didn't get to our assembly last Friday it was one with a difference! It kicked off with a bang by our Kapahaka group repeating their performance from the Polyfest festival and then led into a sharing time for our senior school that was based on our Term 3 Inquiry focus - Create and Refine. All four workshop elements were on display - from painting, to sketching, to clay, through to animation! While the children shared their 'creations' with some of our parents they also talked about and shared some of their refinement that had gone into creating the end product. This is a process that we are continuing to work on with our production coming up in the last week, Week 9, of this term. Community consultation Last week I linked our community consultation survey summary off our website. It makes for interesting reading and I hope that you have all taken the chance to browse through it. It gives a very positive snapshot into the life of

our school and reinforces the work that our staff do for our children every day. That summary is shared with, and discussed specifically, at our schools next board meeting. It helps gives a wider context to the reflection that the leadership team of myself, Mark and Evelyn provide to the Board from our formal performance appraisal process that we run across our school with our teaching staff. I can unequivocally say that our school has a staff who consistently put a lot of time and effort, both together and independently, into what we do for each and every child at our school. While it is the job they have chosen to pursue, it is for our teachers, a vocation rather than a job. Our teachers are passionate about the learning they facilitate for each and every child as they work together to create that atmosphere of possibilities throughout our school. This, unfortunately, can not be taken for granted and it is days like yesterday, where the leadership team get to sit and discuss together with different teachers the thinking and collaboration that goes into each and every day, which remind us of that. Yesterday was a discussion day of 'planning checks' and yet it was so much more than that. It was a stimulating, invigorating and inspiring afternoon. Personally, and collectively (I think I can speak for Mark and Evelyn also), I felt like we finished the day on a real high. We have a school that works very hard to give each and every child the opportunities to realise the potential that their learning can reveal.

During the interview round we had 96 responses for our survey. A quick summary of the results showed: • 100% agreed that our school is a safe and happy place. • 100% agreed that we have effective educational leadership in our school. • 100% agreed that our teachers provide stimulating and challenging environments for our children. • 100% agreed that our staff are easily approachable. • 93% agreed that our report and interview process provided helpful information about your child's progress. • 97% agreed that our school provides sufficient challenge and opportunity across a range of sporting and cultural activities. • 94% agreed that you are well informed about the life of school through notices, school newsletter, class blogs, school website and facebook page. • 35% liked that we have no school uniform, 45% wanted to investigate school uniform options and 20% were not bothered either way! If any of those points caught your interest then please go to our newsletter page on the website and browse the full breakdown of stats and comments made during that process. Enjoy! Congratulations to the “Sportsmanship & Fair Play cup” recipients (Hot Shots team members) who collected the cup from Netball Southland prize giving last Saturday

Community Sport Southland: is running a campaign to collect as much unused sports gear as we can, so that we can redistribute it to schools, clubs and community organisations in need. It’s called Pass It On – and that’s what we’re encouraging Southlanders to do! We would really appreciate any support you could offer the campaign. Myross Bush School is a ‘drop off point’ for people to donate their equipment, that would be simply fantastic!

Week 5 Term 3

RIMU 3 (Mrs Godby) We are having a change in our daily morning news. The children's news days will stay the same, however, we will now be focussing on retelling a story they have read. It would be great if they can come prepared with a book that they know. This can be one from home or one that they have read in class. We will be using the structure of a five finger retell where the children talk about the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story. Regards Jade Lanauze.

RATA 4 (Mrs Aurik) This week we are beginning our class dance for production. We are all really excited to get started. The children have really been enjoying the 'make a pair of dancing shoes' action stations. At this action station the children have made a range of shoes which they have then tested to see if they meet the purpose. Miss Withington and Mrs Aurik

MIRO 5 (Mrs Kahukura) Kapahaka, What a fantastic performance from our students and I was very proud of them all. Thank you for the donations of boxes, we now have enough. Have a great week. Kiri • Kapahaka was fun. Charlotte • I was nervous but very excited. Liam Devery • I liked Kapahaka but I was a little bit nervous at the start. Lily Symon • I liked the skirt and the top that you got to wear for Kapa Haka. Amelia McIntosh

MANUKA 6 (Mrs Carr) Thank you for all the terrific parent support and feedback with regard to Kapahaka, I am once again humbled by this wonderful community. As we continue to grow we will have to do some fundraising to have enough uniforms for everyone next year! We all enjoyed the Polyfest experience, here are some reflections... • It was really fun being a Kaea (Leader) and really fun performing with everyone on stage. Lucy McKee. • The uniforms all looked really great. Kapahaka is cool, I had a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. Ashley Phillips. • Kapahaka was fun, I liked being able to wear a Pounamu from Mrs Carr because I was a leader. Millie McKenzie. • It was my first year in Kapahaka and I really enjoyed it, I loved being on stage and I really want to do it again next year. Lydia Horton. TOTARA 7 (Miss Duncan) • I'm looking forward to the production practices. I'm excited to be a Sneetch that already has a star! Our production has a really good theme about fitting in and including others. Olivia C. • I am enjoying scripting a play in my action stations at the moment. We are working in a group planning a play called The Witch and the Wolf. It's going to have a narrator and a witch, a wolf, a serpent and a prince. It's a story about how every perceives the witch to be evil when she isn't. Jemmimah. • I enjoyed my art elective, which was painting. We did our art about Hunderwasser and how he didn't use straight lines and built his buildings around trees and the environment. It was great to show off our work in the activity centre last Friday. Katie J. KOWHAI 2 (Mr Herring) We are all really proud of Jessica and Georgia this week for representing our school at the Speech Competition at Bluff yesterday. They competed against other Year 5 and 6 students and spoke on 'Boring Speeches' and 'Why we should have a school uniform!' Well done, girls. I'm sure our inquiry on 'Create and Refine' helped you be very persuasive. It was also great to see so many parents at our Senior Arts Explosion on Friday. We hope you had a good chat with some students about how they refined their art work and made them look so amazing! We are really excited about starting our production practices yesterday. This week starts the 5 week journey to our Production performance in week 9! See you there.

Carpark drainage improvements started today. There was a large audience of potential digger drivers!

from the classroom

KAURI 8 (Mrs Polaschek & Mrs Lemin) We are so excited to begin the production. Lots of the Kauri Kids have parts in the choir or the dance, and we are all excited to begin thinking about our class Sneeches dance! Do you know how confusing 'd and b' can be? We are working on ways to remember which one is which. We are learning to be great at retelling the stories we have read. Ask your child to try the 5 fingered retell, with characters, setting, the beginning, middle and end, when they read to you after school!
