Akotoa have started using the SOLO stages to help them learn in the workshops. This photo shows a group of students working towards a workshop goal of 'Adding and Subtracting tenths and hundredths.' The students sit at the station that best fits their understanding. Some are at unistructural because they know one thing - so they are working with materials. Others on the far side are learning at the multistructural station and working with the equations in word problems. This helps all of the group learn at their own pace and at the place that suits them.

School Donation A huge thank you to the 47% of families who have already paid their school donation for 2014. This voluntary support is one way that all our families can actively support our school in delivering the best possible learning opportunities for all our children. Our school makes a conscious effort to keep this request realistic and has therefore kept it at the same level as the previous few years. The donation request is totally separate from your school account which is an itemised account of actual costs incurred, including sports fees. If you would like to discuss any aspect of this donation then please make the effort to talk to any board member, or myself, about it. School Accounts Term 1 accounts are due. Please make a concerted effort to pay these as quickly as possible as they are for costs that the school has already incurred to provide the teaching and learning programmes that we have. School makes every effort to keep these accounts realistic and to make the use of our schools operational grant go as far as possible before any request for payment is passed onto you.Your support with the payment of these accounts is much appreciated. School website and Facebook Our website (http://myrossbush.ultranet.school.nz/Home/) and Facebook pages have the latest and most up to date information on school life. All sports notices are listed on the website under sports news page. All updates on daily events are posted on our Facebook wall. Please make a point of bookmarking these pages on your phone and/or home computer to keep in touch with what is happening. Regards Tim Lovelock

MIRO 5 (Mrs Godby) & RATA 4 (Mrs Aurik) We have really enjoyed our swimming lessons. The children have all made great progress. It is often a good idea to follow up with some more swimming in the holidays to maintain the progress made so far. Miro is taking assembly this week and the children are all very excited about it. You will find the script with what they have to say in their homework books. It would be helpful if you can practise this each night so that by Friday the children can all confidently read their parts. The children are looking forward to seeing you all there so if you can come and support them that would be great. This week will be the last week for spelling and maths basic facts flash cards testing for the term as we have a short week next week and next weeks assembly is on Wednesday.

KOWHAI 2 (Mrs Kahukura) & RIMU 3 (Miss Burton) Yesterday was our last day for swimming and we look forward to highlighting our achievements in pink. It is always exciting to see the progress that has been made through practice and persistence. We look forward to showcasing these skills at our school swimming sports today. This week Kawaka have started learning a new skill. We have set our goals and talked about the habits of mind that we will use to help us reach these. We have linked resources on our Ultranet page for children to continue practicing these at home. Have a great week, Keri and Kiri.

TOTARA 7 (Mrs Carr) & KAURI 8 (Mr Herring) • The goal setting inquiry is lots of fun as we get to do knitting or juggling and we are learning lots about how to use the Habits of Mind to achieve our goals. Thomas Lemin. • I feel good when I can get a pink circle for my goals on my learning pathway, it means I have evidence that I have achieved a goal. Emma Henderson. • I think the learning pathways are fun and help us learn because of all the activity links on them, they help us to understand, practise and share our skills. Jayden Haywood. • I am enjoying school swimming because we are doing dives off the board, I am looking forward to the School House Swimming day. Ella Wylie Certificates: Emma Henderson, Amy Marwick, Adam Stevens, Thomas Lemin.

from the classroom

MATAI 9 (Mrs Polaschek & Mrs Lemin) A great big welcome to Liam Kerslake and his family who made an awesome start to his school days in Matai this week. Swimming has finished and we are all so proud of how much progress we have made over the last 10 lessons. We got there by being brave about trying new things, and by practising, practising, practising! These are strategies we can use with any new goal we set for ourselves. We are continuing to talk about fractions in maths this week - Do you know the symbol for a half? Did you know we ALL have our own calendars that we can write on now? They help us learn about the days and months, as well as how to write and sequence numbers. We are also very proud that we won our first tidiest classroom award last week! Good job caring for your environment. We are sending the sunhats home today, please wash them and return to school, thank you. Certificates were awarded to Charlee O'Conner for making good choices and Amelia Young for great progress in maths.
