This game, where the object was to get your team across a raging river using the stepping stones, was especially good for discussion about how our decisions impact on the needs of others.

School Visitors Over the last couple of weeks we have had St Pats (Invercargill) Kaitangata and Rangiora Schools come to our place to 'unpack the programme' that is living and breathing at Myross Bush. They have been asking questions around what ICT tools we use, how ICT tools fit into our learning programmes, how our team teaching is working with our 20th Century single cell classroom design and more. We love sharing the journey that our school is on and it is great to show visitors around and hear our children telling them how everything works and why. The visitors are always blown away by the happy hum that is evident across all our learning teams. The evidence of student engagement and ownership in their learning pathway is highly evident across the different ages and stages. Community 'Unpack The Programme' Night Tuesday 27 May Starting in the Activity Centre at 7pm It gets easy to presume that because most schools pretty much look like they did when we went there that what happens inside school will be much the same as well. However, inside 'the cover' of each schools this perception is either reinforced, or in our case, turned upside down. The understanding of what effective teaching and learning looks like in the 21st Century has developed and changed. This framework of collaboration across our school has 're-poured' our foundation from which our teaching team is further enabling the learning capabilities of all our learners. We want every child to be an active learner,

to take responsibility appropriate to their age and stage in the learning process for developing their thinking and problem solving abilities. It's about trying to get that mix of surface and deep learning about right. So what does this look like? We want to give a further opportunity - like at the start of the year to hear about how our teaching and learning programmes work. But, unlike at the start of the year this won't be a night of classroom routines, but a night of developing the understanding around why we are doing what we do and how we are doing it. See you on the 27 May at 7pm! FOS social night out ~ Saturday 17 May from 7pm This is a night out that is about having some fun - no fundraising involved - for our school families. Please let the office know if you are intending to come. We already have approximately 50 people going so it will be a great night out! Term 2 FOS meeting ~ Tonight at 7.30pm in the Staffroom Our Friends of the School have one meeting a term. They are one of the key supporting elements in the life of our school. Their meeting is tonight at 7.30 and it would be great to see as many of our families represented there as possible. Regards Tim Lovelock Principal

MIRO 5 (Mrs Godby) & RATA 4 (Mrs Aurik) This week we are busy learning how to be encouraging and supportive while we play. We are having fun learning tītī tōrea or Maori stick games. You will find a link on our class blog. Also new to the blog this week is a small clip on how to tell the time to the hour and half hour using an analogue clock. You will find both of these links under the School Room heading on the side. We will continue to cover different aspects of time over the next few weeks so any discussion about when and what time things happen in your house helps to make this learning more relevant. In Maths we are continuing to work on fractions this week. We are learning how to find fractions of sets and shapes. Have a great week. Evelyn and Natalie

TOTARA 7 (Mr Murray) & KAURI 8 (Mr Herring) Akotoa We are well under way collecting material (Written content, photos and video) for our eBooks on this term's Inquiry; Play! You have probably been well involved already and we're grateful for your help. These ebooks should be a rich, media celebration of all the hard work that's happening in our workshops this term and we're very excited about sharing them with you in week 9 - hopefully in ibooks. We have moved our Akotoa blog to a Twitter feed and it's something we like to call 'micro-blogging.' You might have noticed this embedded into our Akotoa Ultranet Space and it aims to give regular snapshots of what we're up to each week. They are very photo based and short / to the point. If you would like to receive text updates whenever we post (and there will be a few great pics coming from next week's Dunedin trip) you can send 'Follow @explorersmbs' to 8987 (Telecom and Vodafone only) and you will start receiving our Tweets on your phone as a text. (Normal txt charges apply). We have included a sheet with photos on how to do this, too. This is just another way to keep you in touch with our class. Lastly - we are VERY excited about next week's trip to Dunedin for the Year 6’s. Mr Murray is carrying on with our workshops and learning pathways for Monday and Tuesday with our Year 5s and we will be in touch with everyone throughout the 2 days. I will see all the Year 6s (Mr Herring) and parents at 5.45am on Monday morning! Mr Herring, Mr Murray

KOWHAI 2 (Mrs Kahukura) & RIMU 3 (Miss Burton) Week two and Kawaka are exploring 'Play' as our inquiry. We are looking at the physical, social and emotional benefits and are really enjoying the games we have been playing. • I am enjoying our games and learning new things about sportsmanship. Nick • I think the games are new and interesting. Amelia. • I am puffed after running around but I feel good. Lily A few reminders: As our weather is getting cold and wet the fields are muddy so a change of clothing would be very helpful.

from the classroom

MATAI 9 (Mrs Polaschek & Mrs Lemin) We are enjoying our latest inquiry about playing and how this is healthy for our learning. We have been learning some new games and playing some old favourites. We talked about what we need for the game to be fun and healthy. The children will all have the opportunity to bring their favourite game to school and share it with their friends. Another focus of our inquiry is looking at what games people have played in the past. Some experts are coming to talk to us about this. Watch this space. Check out our blog each week. It is a great place to check out what we are doing each day. www.mataimbs.blogspot.co.nz Certificates: Amelia McCorkindale, Kaia Henare and Meg Scott.

Overdue library notices are going home today. Certificates: Cody M and Daniel. Fletcher and Destiny.
