Supporting Exceptional Birth Experiences
A Message from North Oaks Health System's President & CEO
Now in our 64th year of serving our neighbors, family and friends on the Northshore, North Oaks Health System is making bold investments in our team, services, technology and facilities to ensure access to comprehensive and personalized healthcare to help you live your best and healthiest life.
The North Oaks team of healthcare heroes are as dedicated now to delivering the exceptional care our community deserves as we were when we cared for our first patient in 1960. Our dedication underscores our commitment to our mission of improving lives every time and with every touch.

North Oaks Medical Center Labor & Delivery Suites
We continue to raise the bar when it comes to our already exceptional birth experiences, thanks to recent renovations of North Oaks Medical Center’s Labor & Delivery unit. I encourage you to schedule a tour at www.northoaks.org/labordelivery to meet our team and find out why we have consistently earned the prestigious “Louisiana Birth Ready Plus” recognition for quality and safety year after year.

North Oaks Graduate Medical Education (GME)
Speaking of years, for nearly two decades, we have diligently planned and developed the layers of education and training necessary to create the North Oaks Graduate Medical Education (GME) program as an unparalleled opportunity for residents to learn and grow as physicians. This summer, our efforts culminated in the arrival of our first cohort of internal medicine residents. My gratitude extends to these residents for choosing North Oaks as the starting point for their careers and our GME physician leaders, renowned as some of the most accomplished medical minds in our region, for their commitment to helping to shape Louisiana's medical future!

North Oaks Clinic Building II
As we work to grow our medical staff we are also investing in infrastructure to support them. To that end, construction of the 95,809-square-foot North Oaks Clinic Building II is on pace. Steel is rising from the foundation of the nearly $50 million project. When complete in May 2025, it will stand five stories and significantly increase space for new providers and services, while ensuring we have room to grow for future needs.

North Oaks Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Center
Also in 2025, we look forward to opening the new home of the North Oaks Outpatient Rehabilitation Services center in the former Harley-Davidson building which is located in the heart of downtown Hammond. It will more than double the current space of our existing facility.

All of this is possible because our community believes in the care that we are providing to improve and change lives. Thank you for your loyalty and trust.
Sincerely,

Michele Kidd Sutton, FACHE President & CEO
Seamless Care Saves Local Woman’s Life
Last fall, Tiffany Tyler arrived at North Oaks Medical Center out of breath. “I thought it was the flu. I felt drained.
Just breathing caused pain,” Tyler explained. “I was really, really short of breath. I felt like I was going to pass out.”
Tiffany Tyler

Emergency Department
In the North Oaks Medical Center Emergency Department, Dr. Gary Mall recognized right away that her breathing issues were only part of the problem. Tyler’s heart was not beating normally, and her condition was rapidly deteriorating.
“My heart actually stopped,” Tyler confirmed. “They were trying to bring me back.”
Tyler’s aunt was in the room with her and later described how hard the Emergency Department team fought to revive her. “My aunt could feel how much they actually cared about me. She said they kept saying, ‘We’re not going to lose her.’ She could see the emotion on their faces as they worked to revive me.”
Once Tyler was stabilized, the integrated care available at North Oaks Medical Center meant she got swift resolution to her condition. Dr. Mall collaborated with hospitalists and cardiologists to develop a lifesaving care path for Tyler.
Cardiology
Tyler's health had been severely compromised due to irregular cardiac rhythms, which was disrupting her body's normal function and hampering her lungs' ability to discharge carbon dioxide – a consequence of her heart's abnormal pumping.

They concluded she needed a pacemaker. Dr. Georges Khoueiry, a renowned North Oaks cardiologist, placed it to regulate her heart rhythm.
Pulmonology
During a routine follow-up appointment at North Oaks Pulmonology Clinic later that fall, Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Littell was putting Tyler through the paces of a standard lung function test.

“I just couldn’t do it; it felt like something was stopping me from being able to deep breathe,” Tyler noted. Consequently, further testing followed with the Gastroenterology Department, which revealed that Tyler had stage 3 colon cancer. A tumor was indeed blocking the space her lungs needed to expand.
Hematology & Oncology
It was then that Dr. Georges Tanios with North Oaks Hematology & Oncology became part of Tyler’s care team. He tailored a targeted, cancer-fighting care plan for Tyler that included surgical and chemotherapy interventions.

“The level of care I received was just beyond words,” Tyler praised. “Everyone was incredibly warm and attentive. They truly took the time to listen to my needs.”
“The North Oaks team excels in what they do and truly care about my health and well-being. I’m sticking with North Oaks!”
- Tiffany Tyler
Tyler went on to attribute her survival to the top-notch care she experienced with every provider and in every setting of her healthcare journey with North Oaks Health System. She is convinced that, without the exceptional diagnostic and interventional skills of each North Oaks provider involved in her care, she would not be alive today.
North Oaks Patient
Heading Off SINUS ISSUES
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sinusitis affects nearly 29 million people each year. Common symptoms such as sinus pressure, headache, postnasal drip, fatigue, runny nose, bad breath, upper teeth discomfort and congestion are relatable for 12 percent of the population, or one in every eight people. In 10 percent of sinusitis cases, the condition is chronic. This type causes inflammation in the sinuses or a sinus infection with symptoms that persist for 12 weeks or more.

Chronic sinusitis symptoms can trigger endless discomfort, characterized by significant pressure, pain and dependence on over-the-counter medication to get relief. Some cases are caused by narrowed airways and polyps that can develop in the nasal cavity and sinuses. The pain and pressure will continue until the blockage is removed.
While not serious, it can make you feel miserable, necessitating an evaluation by a specialist in otolaryngology, more commonly known as an ear, nose and throat specialist or ENT.

North Oaks’ ENTs are experts at intervening with personalized solutions to help their patients end the cycle of chronic sinusitis discomfort. With locations in Hammond and Livingston, they offer a full spectrum of treatment options including balloon sinuplasty. This minimally invasive procedure requires little downtime and effectively clears blockages without the need to cut into nasal bone or tissue.

Supporting Exceptional Birth Experiences

When it comes to delivering exceptional support for healthy pregnancies, birthing and postpartum experiences, North Oaks continues to set the standard on the Northshore.
Exceptional Quality and Safety

For four consecutive years, North Oaks Medical Center has ranked as a “Louisiana Birth Ready Plus” hospital as designated by the Louisiana Department of Health & the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (LaPQC). This distinction places North Oaks among 18 birthing hospitals in the state meeting the highest threshold for quality, safety and patient partnership.
“We are dedicated to excellence,” asserted Tamara Mitchell, director of Women & Children’s Services at North Oaks Medical Center. “This achievement reaffirms our commitment to enhancing the lives of mothers, babies and their families. Earning this designation four years in a row underscores our diligent and consistent commitment to the healthiest outcomes possible for our community.”
As a birthing hospital, North Oaks Medical Center is also recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana as a Blue Distinction© Center+ for Maternity Care as part of its Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. The hospital has also earned the highest breastfeeding quality “Gift” designation from the Louisiana Department of Health for fully supporting breastfeeding mothers. Additionally, the hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) ranks among the top 25 percent in the nation according to the prestigious Vermont-Oxford Network.

Exceptional Accommodations

The top-tier care provided by the hospital’s women and children’s team converges with comfortable and well-appointed surroundings for families to welcome new additions, thanks to a comprehensive renovation of the hospital’s Labor & Delivery wing.
The refurbishment includes freshly painted walls, new flooring, lighting, cabinets, bathrooms and doors. Enhancements extend to the birthing suites, obstetrical rooms, medication rooms, guest bathrooms, nurses' stations, cesarean section rooms and waiting areas.

According to Mitchell, "These renovations reflect our enduring commitment to offering families the advanced technology and medical care of unparalleled skill and compassion to create memorable birth experiences for expectant mothers and their newborns.”
Exceptional Support

More than 220 mothers and mothers-to-be and their families had the opportunity to be among the first members of the community to tour the renovated at Labor and Delivery units at North Oaks’ inaugural Motherhood & Birth Fair this summer.
Derrick and Brittany Ducote from Albany shared, “It really put my mind at ease and made me feel comfortable to get acquainted with the staff and see the facilities ahead of my due date.”
The fair was the first of its kind in Tangipahoa Parish, helping promote and support healthy pregnancies and postpartum experiences with the aid of 34 event volunteers and 44 community partners.
In addition to tours, participants browsed more than 40 vendor booths and participated in breakout educational sessions.
Topics ranged from “An Open Forum on Adoption in Louisiana” to “The Continuum of Care: Before, During and After Pregnancy and Delivery,” presented by a panel of providers from North Oaks Health System’s own Magnolia Obstetrics & Gynecology clinic and community partners from North Oaks Obstetrics & Gynecology clinic. Other topics included “Nutrition for Pregnancy & Postpartum” and “Postpartum Mental Health: In and Beyond the Hospital.”

Dr. Jaime Edwards with Magnolia Obstetrics & Gynecology, a department of North Oaks Medical Center, asserted, “Our panel presentation on the continuum of care was very well attended with a lot of questions asked – even from fathers. That was good to see.”
Fellow panelist Dr. Dwan Mabry with North Oaks Obstetrics & Gynecology, added, “Participants have been really impressed with the amount of education they have received today. It’s been a tremendous success coming out of the gate.”

“This has been wonderful. I think that this outreach has really showcased everything that this area and North Oaks have to offer Northshore families.”
- Dr. Elizabeth Fritz, North Oaks Pediatric Clinic
Car seat safety checks, installations and demos, compliments of the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force, also were offered at the event.
Grace Skopec, a North Oaks community health educator who leads the health system’s prenatal class series and is a nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, was also part of the effort. “The turnout was exciting. We had a steady stream of parents bringing their vehicles through to get their car seats checked,” Skopec stated. “For parents who didn't bring a car seat, we were able to use a demo seat to simulate the installation process.”
For Kaimana and Rachel Kauhola of Independence, the car seat checkpoint was one of many attractions. “We just moved here from Washington state last year. It’s extremely helpful to know the car seat is installed correctly and to browse all the different resources that are available,” Rachel noted.

The Motherhood & Birth Fair was so well received by the community that plans are underway to host another one on Saturday, November 16. Registration and more details are now
The family also toured Labor & Delivery. “I really appreciated that everything is family-oriented,” observed Kaimana. “It reminded me of the culture back home in Hawaii where I’m originally from. The staff was open to answering any questions we had and welcomed suggestions as well.”

“I've never gone through this process before, so seeing where I'll be helps me feel prepared for what I’m going into.”
- Rachel Kauhola

The appeal of the birth fair extended to the Southshore with couples like Kateri and Archie Washington and Karli Meunier and Damani Wells of Metairie making the drive to Hammond. “I want to have my baby here when the time comes,” asserted Kateri. “I enjoyed the tour. I’m most impressed by how professional and genuine the staff is.”
Karli echoed Kateri’s comments: “We love it here. The Labor & Delivery area is very nice and big. I love that the baby can room with me. Everyone made you feel like family and answered our questions. We have decided to switch our physician and hospital to North Oaks even though we live 45 minutes away. I’m ready to make an appointment.”
“It’s definitely worth the drive,” Wells added. “I didn’t expect half of what I saw on the tour, and I love that I can participate in skin-to-skin bonding after the baby is born.”
Saleta Costanza, vice president of North Oaks Health System’s Primary Care and Population Health service lines, explained, “That is what the Motherhood & Birth Fair was all about – displaying the best practices that make our hospital and providers the Northshore’s healthcare partner of choice for exceptional birth experiences. In the process, it also highlighted the vibrant community of organizations and businesses who share our passion for supporting women and families along the journey to parenthood.”
Teens Spend Summer
Volunteering at North Oaks
Twenty-seven teens served more than 1,300 hours this summer through the health system’s Junior Volunteer program. The program offered high school students, ages 14 to 17, opportunities for community service and career exploration. North Oaks’ junior volunteers represented 11 Louisiana high schools found in East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Natchitoches, Orleans, Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parishes and one high school in Martinsville, Virginia.

Did You Know? Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs lifesaving blood.
Blood shortages can happen at any time, and blood donations are needed year-round. A low blood supply can negatively affect hospitals and trauma centers like North Oaks Medical Center impacting our ability to provide lifesaving patient care.
“Not only is donating blood synonymous with good citizenship and helping your fellow man, but also it may surprise you to learn that it has health benefits for you,” notes Dr. Robert Peltier, chief medical officer for North Oaks Health System, who is pictured donating with his son Lawton. “For example, giving blood has been linked to lower blood pressure and a lower risk for heart attack.”

Anyone who is 17 and older and weighs at least 110 pounds can donate blood, and 16-year-olds can give too as long as they weigh at least 130 pounds and have signed parental consent. Please help save lives by donating blood and encouraging your friends and family to donate with you.
