1/2 cup Food for Thought Roasted Garlic Dressing, divided 1 tablespoon coarse salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 boneless lamb shoulder (4-5 pounds)

PREPARATION: Remove string or netting from the lamb, and lay flat in a large baking dish or sheet pan. Season with salt and pepper. Pour half of the roasted garlic dressing over the lamb and massage into both sides. Re-roll the roast and slip back into the netting or tie with kitchen twine and place into a large resealable plastic bag. Pour in the remaining dressing. Refrigerate to marinate for at least 1 hour (preferably overnight), turning occasionally.

Remove the meat from the refrigerator 30-60 minutes before cooking. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees, placing rack in lower third.

Remove the lamb from the bag and drain any excess marinade. Place the lamb on a roasting rack in a foil-lined pan and place in preheated oven; after 15 minutes, lower the heat to 300 and loosely tent the lamb with foil and roast for 1 hour. Uncover and baste with juices.

Continue to roast until the meat is fork tender, another 30-40 minutes or until 160. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 15-20 minutes.

Remove twine/net, carve and serve.

A LIFE WELL-SHARED

I

always said sara was a lab-shepherd mix, but if 23andMe had been a thing 40 years ago, I’m sure it would have revealed she was a mutt from a long line of dogs who rambled freely through life. She was born in the woods when a friend’s dog, Tory, headed out behind their house, dug a hole and had her pups. One day, several weeks later, as I sat at work in the first year of the magazine, Thom, Tory’s human, called to say he had the puppies in the back of his truck on the street below and was taking them to the humane society. Would my small staff of early 20-somethings want to take a look?

The four of us tumbled out to see the puppies. My eye went immediately to the smallest, quietest in the bunch.

The runt. But editor and friend, Jeff Smith, said, “No, take that one. Look how alert and curious she is.” A harbinger if there ever was one. The truck pulled away and I was the only one holding a puppy—an alert and curious puppy who would challenge my life in so many ways and who gave me gifts beyond measure. I was 24, working 14 hours a day, and should never have had a dog. Hands down.

But she didn’t know that, and we muddled through.

She was a bugger. She would walk at my side down any road without a leash. But she could randomly not like another dog and love the next, hated people in uniforms and on occasion she would chase a deer. But she freely gave those dog gifts of devotion and intuition, and maybe the greatest gift of all, the need to walk, a long way, every day.

As such, she and I walked and skied the North—every day, every evening, every weekend. I was swamped with work and certainly would not have gone outside every day without her. Doing so kept me sane. The outdoor world of the North that had brought me such solace and joy was explored, now, with a good friend. We hiked to perches throughout the region and sat companionably through countless sunsets, her body leaning ever so slightly into mine. We lay in meadows on blue-sky days, her head resting just where she liked it on my leg. But it was teaching me to love whatever weather a day brings that I credit to her. She taught me the fun of walking in the rain; the fierce, humbling power of a March wind; the beauty of clear

winter skies completely doused with stars; the way the clouds can race across a November sky in a dash to nowhere when I might have just seen them as a sea of gray.

There is every kind of marvelous pet in the world, and their devoted humans, but it is hard to find a pet more enthusiastic and grateful to discover the North than a dog.

The North is, quite simply, a dog’s best life. There are beaches to roam, lakes to swim, trails to follow and endless critters to attempt to ferret out. And in Michigan, it is perfectly acceptable to head to the outside space of a restaurant, winery or brewery that allows dogs, for that cold beer after a hot-day hike or a warm bowl of soup by an outside fire. (Bringing your dog along does require a bit of planning, so check out two days of petfriendly fun in Traverse City and Petoskey on page 26.)

I don’t know what Sara would have made of a world where dogs are “with us” in so many ways. I suspect neither she nor I would have found out, as the cute beagle at the next table may not have sat well with her. She was a dog of the country, and when I scraped together enough money to buy a farmhouse on a land contract, we had our place. I remember sitting on the porch just after it was mine, seeing daffodils popping that I didn’t even know were there, and saying to Sara, “As long as I can come up with $491.27 a month, this is our home.” She was 6 years old; it seemed like we’d be together forever.

Seven years later, my husband, Neal, and I lived in a small cottage on the lake with Sara and two boys under 3. We had marvelous family hikes, and every day, I’d bundle the kids into a wagon or sled and walk the half-mile on our dirt road to the mailbox. It was on those walks that I realized how old Sara had gotten. Even that short walk eventually had her stopping for a moment, looking at me with an almost apologetic expression that said, “Just give me a minute. I’ll be OK.” I lost her when she was almost 14, but as any pet owner knows, it’s always too soon. With her went that idealistic 24-year-old left standing on the street as Thom’s truck pulled away; the harried magazine owner in over my head who so valued her warm, kind eyes and comforting weight against my leg; the newly married me with a husband who loved to explore as I did and who worked so hard to win Sara’s trust; NORTHERN MICHIGAN'S MAGAZINE

the pregnant me who was worried a baby would disrupt Sara’s relationship with me, only to find her favorite perch was on Ben’s blanket as he lay on the floor; and the mom of two who had to look upon my aging friend hobbled by arthritis, nearly blind, and understand that I would not, could not, have her forever. When we buried her, it was a profound loss; of her, and of so much life we’d shared. It's a heart-breaking loss so many know well.

I’ve walked every dog, every day, since. Our first corgi, Foxy, herded the kids from lake to fort, and allowed me to return to myself on long walks of quiet with just her as my companion.

The second, Toby, arrived as a pup to a house still busy with teenagers, then adapted to our empty-nester house— more than happy with our predictable routine, her loyal stillness by my feet.

But our household was just a bit too still for me. So, now we have a puppy, Scout. She’s a pandemic puppy as it turns out, although we were a month shy of knowing that when we welcomed her. She is light and joy—the happiest little being I have ever had as a dog, as if the universe knew we would need that in the time of COVID. She runs like the wind, embraces every new experience with such gusto and has made our pandemic home a place of laughter and puppy cuddles once again.

As Sara taught me to find sanity, awe and calm in the world as I faced the magazine’s daily challenges, and as Foxy gave me moments of return to myself, Toby and Scout have brought joy at a time of such suffering and challenge, reminding me daily that gorgeous perches still await, March winds still leave me awe-struck and winter stars fill our dark, clear skies.

Now, as I lie watching those blue skies from a favorite meadow, their weight against me brings back the younger me, the younger Sara, the continuum of life, and the many gifts found in this place of our hearts.

avid milarch, co-founder of the nonprofit Archangel Ancient Tree Archive in Manistee County, has planted champion trees on the grounds of the Pentagon, in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics and at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. He’s been interviewed by The New York Times and the BBC (among many others).

There’s even a book about him, “The Man Who Planted Trees,” by NYT journalist Jim Robbins.

to propagate our planet’s champion trees and fight climate change.

“We’re cloning the world’s oldest and largest trees that genetically have a predisposition to live several hundred or several thousand years,” Milarch says. “When you clone tree species state by state, country by country … you start to rebuild old growth forests. You’re bringing back that entire ecosystem.”

Archangel has cloned more than 130 different species of trees, creating living libraries of old-growth tree genetics. Currently, 15,000 redwoods, ranging in height from 4 inches to 15 feet are growing at Archangel’s facility in Copemish. The team in Northern Michigan has grown seedlings from the 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine Methuselah and 3,000-plus-year-old giant sequoias. (No one had ever cloned a giant sequoia over 80 years old.) In fact, when Milarch and his sons, Jared and Jake, first started talking about cloning ancient trees almost 25 years ago, the scientific community said it couldn’t be done; that the trees were too old. But Archangel found a way, sending climbers to the very tops of trees and the ends of the branches to collect cuttings of new growth; places not yet reached by the hormones and chemicals that don't allow a tree to be cloned. The cuttings are shipped overnight back to Copemish and work begins the next day to clone them. When the trees are strong enough, they’re planted in native habitats across the world—a redwood grove in New Zealand, sessile and common oaks in Ireland—the list goes on and on.

“Reestablishing our old growth forests by utilizing genetics of the strongest, oldest trees—that’s what Archangel is all about,” Milarch says.

Sure, you might have a hunting or fishing license. But do you have a unicorn hunting license? (No, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke.)

In 1971, the late W.T. (Bill) Rabe had been hired as director of public

relations at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. He needed to drum up some attention for LSSU, so he came up with a fantastical idea—the Department of Natural Unicorns. Rabe and a group of similarly fun-loving professors instituted several traditions over the years garnering national media attention, including the aforementioned unicorn hunting license, burning a snowman on the first day of spring and the annual “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.” Since 1976, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for the list, which now totals more than 1,000 entries. In 2020, nominations came from most major U.S. cities and many states, as well as Australia, the Czech Republic, England and Canada. Banned this year: COVID-19, pivot, unprecedented and Karen. With a little planning, your canine companion will enjoy camping just as much as you. These Northern Michigan spots are perfectly pet-friendly.

SOUTH HIGGINS LAKE STATE PARK

This 1,000-acre park south of Grayling features nearly a mile of shoreline along Higgins Lake, a spring-fed body of water known for its clarity and fishing. Pitch your tent or park your RV at one of the 400 modern, hardwood-shaded campsites and enjoy the sandy beach, boat launch and picnic area.

Dog-Friendly Hike: You’ll find a self-guided nature trail within the park. For a longer and history-filled hike, take the short drive to Grayling and spend an afternoon exploring Hartwick Pines State Park’s trails through old growth white pines—some of these trees stretch more than 120 feet skyward and date back to before the Revolutionary War. Pro Pup Tip: While all state park and state forest campgrounds are pet-friendly, not all cabins and lodges are, says Maia Turek, resource development specialist with the Michigan DNR Parks and Recreation Division. Visit michigan.gov/ ParkPets for a list of options when traveling with your furry family members.

EMPIRE TOWNSHIP CAMPGROUND

Located about 10-15 minutes from Glen Arbor, this is a rustic and hidden gem of a campground. Reserve one of nine goodsized electric hookup sites, all nestled within towering pine trees, or opt for one of the remaining 51 sites deep in the woods nearby—all rustic.

Dog-Friendly Hike: Check out the more than 21-mile-long Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, which spans from the village of Empire to Bohemian Road at M-22. Start at the trailhead in Empire, or drive to Glen Haven for a beach walk before hooking up to the trail near the parking lot and bright red Glen Haven Canning Co. building. Most of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is asphalt, but a three-mile section that goes through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District north of Glen Arbor is crushed stone, and there is also a boardwalk section over Narada Lake.

Pro Pup Tip: While Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore generally welcomes pets (Glen Haven beach is OK), certain areas, like the Dune Climb, are off limits. Learn more at nps.gov/slbe.

Dog-Friendly Hike: Head to the southwest side of the park for trails and waterfalls. The East River and West River trails follow Presque Isle River, the largest and most beautiful river in the Porkies. Spectacular waterfalls, cascades and rapids are a short walk from the parking area.

Pro Pup Tip: While it’s tempting to let your dog off-leash, be mindful of leash rules where you’re staying and remember that it’s possible for even the most well-behaved dogs to find themselves in a pickle if confronted with wildlife, strangers or other dogs.

W

hile waiting for a hike to begin during Earth Week last spring at Kehl Lake, I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. Glancing at the screen, I saw it was a close friend of mine, a college roommate, who dislikes talking on the phone and almost never calls. I picked up.

My friend could hardly speak but managed to get the words out that her daughter, 28 years old, had died that morning of a drug overdose. She had just heard the news. It was a call that I had somehow always expected I might get, and yet it nearly took me to my knees.

Her daughter had struggled with addiction mightily for 12 years. She was bright, beautiful, married and a mother to an adorable three-year-old. This was a girl who my own two sons thought of as a cousin. She loved Leelanau and came up every summer with her mom and younger brother to stay with us for a week. I can still see her jumping off our raft, surfing the waves at Van’s Beach, or toasting marshmallows by firelight, her long dark hair pulled back.

But tragically, as in so many cases across our nation, her drug addiction trumped everything. We went downstate to be with my friend and to attend the funeral. In the days that followed, I felt alternately 4 15

numb and perpetually on the verge of tears, sad for my friend and incredulous at her unimaginable loss.

I went back to work later that week and our staff carpooled out to tour the new Cedar River Preserve addition.

Our board had just taken the leap of faith to buy this incredible 80 acres that could have easily become a ridgetop development, with its sweeping views of Lake Leelanau.

It was a cool and overcast May afternoon as we trekked up and along the ridgeline. The trees were still stark and bare. But the bright green of spring ephemerals on the hillside took my breath away, contrasting beautifully against the darkness of a forest floor rich with leaf litter. Iridescent moss and patterned lichen fanned out on decaying logs. We heard a cacophony of birdsong and looked down on a kettle hole lake, formed by the glaciers.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something ease in me. Seeing all of the new life after such a long, brutal winter felt hopeful. The ancientness of the kettle hole, the girth of oldgrowth trees, even the skeleton of what appeared to be a deer gave me a kind of peace and perspective that only nature can provide. Life and death are intertwined so beautifully and naturally in the out of doors. It gave me comfort to be reminded that each of us is just a speck in time, whirling through a very big universe.

Somehow, it felt easier to accept the death of my friend’s daughter.

I couldn’t be more grateful that the Leelanau Conservancy has protected places like the Cedar River Preserve to hike in, to heal in and to offer peace and perspective.

My friend plans to come up this summer. By then, I hope that the new preserve will be open. We will hike its breathtaking ridgeline trail and spend time on Lake Michigan, too—walking in the pounding waves, remembering the little girl who once played along those shores.

roads that paralleled the river’s path, we wound farther up toward skinny water. Approaching a bridge, I was certain this covert culvert would be unscathed, only to discover the opposing ditch lined with every manner of rusted pick-up. We pressed on.

Kyle knew of another spot just a few bends up and we pulled onto a narrow access road. To our delight, it was completely vacant. Perhaps the prolonged truck time had heightened our appetites, as we emerged from the cab feeling collective voracity. We realized to our dismay that we had bypassed the plethora of meat sticks, sandwiches and pickled provisions Roy’s had to offer and now stood empty handed.

That is, until Kyle unveiled himself as the Saint of Trout Saturday. Packed in a separate soft cooler were cheese, pickled bologna and canned smoked oysters. We thanked him profusely and tucked into the grub. True, this was not the carefully packed lunch of my prior Opening Days. It was not the smoked snacks, crackers and almonds of which I had come to rely upon my dad to provide. But it was perfect. We sliced off cheese and bologna with a pocket knife. We ate smoked oily oysters from the tin with our fingers. We washed down our streamside feast with beer still cold and rehashed old jokes and laughed about the day’s misfortunes.

Stomach pangs now subsided, we wadered-up for one last hurrah. Ian and I tromped upstream to fish down toward the truck, and Kyle sloshed upstream to swing spinners. I tied on a size 14 elk hair caddis and tried to flick my lithe 4 weight between the tight overhangs of the bank. I made a few drifts before the inevitable jarring halt on my backcast. A dropping birch had snatched my fly. I tried to rattle its grasp to no avail and ended up donating one of my hand-tied creations to this arboreal fiend. I retied and worked downstream, maintaining a flawless record of zero hits (unless you count the birch). Soon Kyle came into view and we worked opposite one another, searching the last few pockets and bends. Ian sat on the bank and watched our glacial approach toward one another. I asked if he wanted to throw a few last casts, and it was only now that he divulged that both feet in his waders had leaks and he had been squelching in cold river water all day.

The trout ignored our many offerings, but that was largely to be expected. We shucked our waders for the last time, Ian put on a dry pair of socks and we climbed into the truck. Rather than retrace our path, Kyle led us farther up the two-track that I had known for so long but never pursued this far. We wended pasts pine stands and scrub plains, catching glimpses of the river that coursed as it chose.

This had not been the trout opener of years gone. It had been undeniably different in substance, circumstance and even in stream. Rather than trying to recreate that which cannot be replicated, we shifted our course the way the river deposits sand on a bank or scoops out an oxbow. It’s never the same river again, but its essence remains unaltered. Regardless of river chosen, or number of trout, the last Saturday in April is about chasing and sharing that riparian mania—a streamside obsession that flows uninterrupted from our past right on downstream to where we’re bound to go.

The wild violets that dot our forest floors are pretty enough to eat. Go ahead—let our six simple recipes fuel your culinary imagination.

beautiful additions to the top of a perfectly white cake. They are delicious when brewed in teas or made into a syrup. But did you know common blue violets are high in vitamin C and vitamin A? Stunning, tasty and good for you. Yes, please do eat the violets.

By April, our north woods (and shady lawns) are dappled with the purpley-blue to white shades of common blue, dog and long-spurred violets. In wetlands, you may come across a marsh blue. White and yellow violets bloom a bit later in the season and include the Canada, sweet white, Northern white and downy yellow. Besides color, you may recognize this second wave of violets because they’re leggier than their blue counterparts, though they still bear the characteristic five petals and heart-shaped leaves.

If you find yourself deep in the forest, face-toface with a five-petaled purple flower that looks violet-like—except that its leaves are long and linear—it could well be a bird-foot violet. Wish it well, and then be on your way; bird-foot violets are protected in Michigan. Also note, African violets are not in the same genus as the violets listed above and are not edible.

VIOLET SALAD Serves 4-6 8 cups of mild baby greens, washed and drained 1 cup violet leaves, washed and drained 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, washed, drained and chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lemon balm, washed, drained and chopped 1 tablespoon fresh tarragon, washed, drained and chopped 2 tablespoons violet vinegar (recipe below) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup olive oil 1 cup violet flowers, washed and drained Combine first five ingredients in a large salad bowl.

In a small bowl, whisk together violet vinegar, salt and pepper. Gradually whisk in olive oil. Drizzle over salad greens and toss. Arrange violet flowers on top. Serve immediately.

> Violet Vinegar Using a 1-to-4 ratio, violet petals to champagne vinegar, place washed petals in the bottom of a jar. Pour champagne vinegar over them and cover tightly.

Turn the jar upside down and back again several times to make sure the petals are fully immersed. In three or four days, strain out the petals. Rebottle the vinegar. (Can be stored in a cool dry place for up to a year.)

VIOLET CUPCAKES Makes one dozen cupcakes 3 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 3/4 cup vegetable shortening 2 ⅓ cups violet sugar (recipe below) 8 egg whites 3/4 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift the flour, salt and cream of tartar together. Using an electric mixer, cream together the shortening and violet sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add egg whites, unbeaten, alternating with sifted flour, salt and cream of tartar mixture. Beat well.

Add buttermilk, then vanilla. Beat until blended. Add soda and water mixture. Beat until blended. Pour into a jumbo-sized (3 ½-inch) muffin tin lined with muffin cups. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden on top. Cool, then frost with violet frosting (recipe below). > Violet Sugar Use to make violet cupcakes or stir into iced tea and lemonade.

For every cup of white sugar, use 1/2 cup of violet petals. Rinse the petals and spin thoroughly in a salad spinner or gently pat off excess water with a paper towel. Pour half the sugar into a shallow bowl and spread the damp violets on top. Cover with the remaining sugar, then lightly crush the petals into the sugar with the bottom of a glass. Use a fork to break up the petals and completely stir them through the sugar. Cover the bowl with a dishtowel until the petals are completely dry. Put in a covered container and store in a cool dark place. > Violet Frosting 2 tablespoons flour 3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup butter 3/4 cup violet sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla Place flour in a saucepan and stir in a few tablespoons of the milk to make a paste.

Add remaining milk. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens. Cool. Cream butter using an electric mixer, gradually adding violet sugar and salt.

Beat well. Add cooled milk mixture. Beat until fluffy. Add vanilla. Spread on cooled cake or cupcakes.

is the name of the game when you have two teenage boys. So, when I heard about cruising “The Breezeway” through Antrim and Charlevoix counties for a day trip, I began my campaign. It was every mother’s dream: beautiful scenery, small adventures along the way assured by my homemade scavenger hunt and bonding time inside the confines of a car whether they liked it or not.

“It’ll be gorgeous!” I told them as they groaned. “There’s a corn maze … and donuts and apples … and a steam engine!” (Really, there is, and the youngest one perked up at this despite himself.)

“And, get this,” I said, going over the Breezeway brochure, “there’s even a labyrinth!”

“A labyrinth!?” my husband, Tim, chimed in. “We’re going!”

I shot him a look. Finally, I pulled out my trump card, used for all negotiations with my family of boys: “There’s a great burger joint!”

“I’m in!” the eldest said.

THE

“BREEZEWAY”

IS A 26-MILE RURAL RIDE ALONG C-48 FROM ATWOOD (TUCKED ON US-31) TO ELLSWORTH, THROUGH EAST JORDAN AND ENDING IN BOYNE FALLS (AT US-131). THE ROAD CUTS THROUGH A PART OF MICHIGAN THAT IS MOSTLY UNTOUCHED. ROLLING HILLS, WORKING FARMS AND COUNTRY HOMES SET THE SCENE, WHILE THE FOUR BREEZEWAY TOWNS OFFER THE REST: ANTIQUE STORES, ARTISTS' GALLERIES, SHOPPING, RESTAURANTS, LODGING AND GROWING DOWNTOWNS WITH HISTORICAL BUILDINGS TO EXPLORE. PLUS, ALONG THE WAY: THE CHAIN OF LAKES, NATURE PRESERVES AND DRUMLINS (MORE ON THAT LATER!).

The start of the Breezeway is in Atwood (dubbed “Atwood the Adorable” by locals) and Royal Farms Farm Market and Winery holds down the intersection of US-31 and C-48. I want apples and cider and ... look, the corn maze! But I’m no fool. A corn maze is no way to start a day with teenagers.

I’m gonna need to deliver on those burgers first. (Note: Royal Farms opens for the 2021 season in May.) “Keep going,” I say to Tim, my eyes straight ahead. I’ll march them through it later.

ATWOOD

The Family “I know, let’s find the drumlins!” I say.

Small problem: None of us know what drumlins are.

After online research, it turns out they are low, teardropshaped hills of sand, gravel and “glacial till.” They were shaped under glaciers, and as the ice melted away some 4,000 years ago, left behind to form a series of low hills.

Kind of like “eggs in a basket,” according to Wikipedia. There are very few drumlin fields in the United States and two of them are in Michigan.

As I research, I discover another catch to the drumlins: They are best seen from above. I don’t tell the family this. This scavenger hunt is fun.

I’m not giving up easily.

We turn down C-48 and head east to look for the drumlins.

“There!” One of the boys shouts as he points to a hill.

I have no idea if it’s the drumlins.

That looks like a hill to me, maybe even an “egg hill.” In the distance, I see a series of rolling hills spread out around us.

It has to be!

“We found them!” I declare.

In satisfaction, the boys check it off our list. (Did I mention I made us a list of Breezeway goodies to find? See the sidebar on page 37!)

I’m looking for the grain elevator, next on the list. I’d have to be blind not to see it, but I’m looking so hard everyone else sees it first. It’s looming above the Ellsworth Farmers Exchange just inside the curve into town.

I’m impressed. I get out and walk backward across the two-lane road to get a picture. The locals give me a look. I’m not exactly a tourist, having lived just 90 minutes from here all my

life. But I feel a little thrill. Exploring “home” can feel just as new as anywhere else. The bonus is that I feel ownership.

I told you Michigan was great!

The Farmers Exchange has been a farmer-owned cooperative since 1918, serving surrounding counties. A quick step inside, and I find everything from rakes to tires to bird seed. The guy behind the counter waves at me and goes back to talking to a man in overalls. He’s covered in dust. I feel like I’m in my grandpa’s garage. I walk out with a wave and a lightness to my step. It’s official: I’m on vacation.

Which can mean only one thing—time for the labyrinth.

It’s tucked down in the Ellsworth Community Park. I wonder, have I ever taken my grown children through a labyrinth? I had let them run wild in a small one once as children, but now—insert Mom Moment of Joy—this one we can actually do! We will share the ancient practice of quieting our minds as we walk the path together.

It starts out well, at the giant Adirondack chair at the entrance. There’s a butterfly-winged chair, too. Then all of us scatter. I’m taken by climbing into that huge chair. Tim and Nelson are, for whatever reason, wrestling in the grass. Kendall, 17, is the only one finding peace and serenity in the labyrinth.

When the Ellsworth Labyrinth Garden was unveiled in 2004, it was the largest labyrinth in Michigan at 90 feet wide. It is striking, overlooking Ellsworth Lake, one of 12

connected lakes and rivers making up Michigan’s 99-milelong Chain of Lakes Water Trail that empties into Lake Michigan.

I make the boys pose for a picture because the sky is so blue and the chair is so big. There’s a small uprising, but I still have the burgers as leverage and they smile, laughing.

East Jordan feels like the centerpiece of this trip, because, well, that’s where the burgers are. Rolling into town, we see the Foundry Bar and Grill. It’s the promised land. The place is quiet—we are here late for lunch hour, early for dinner.

We perch on tall rustic stools and look out the rolling garage doors that overlook a marina on Lake Charlevoix.

Our waitress arrives with a shirt sporting their logo: “Dammm. Good. Food.”

It’s accurate.

Tim gets the Cowboy Chicken—a buttermilk-marinated fried chicken breast tossed in sweet BBQ sauce, topped with crispy onions, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and housemade BBQ ranch.

Nelson and I split a small pizza with his one and only favorite, cheese. Kendall orders a giant burger, and we all fight over the fries.

I try Cheboygan Brewing Company’s “Blood Orange Honey” beer. It’s an American-style wheat ale with the addition of wildflower honey and blood orange puree.

It’s perfect for a wine gal who only drinks beer when on the hunt for local (in this case, citrus!) flavor.

Next, it’s a walk downtown. There’s an antique shop, Busy Bridge, that I beg the rest of them to go inside with me. It’s full of awesome trinkets. I purchase a jigsaw puzzle of the steam engine on display in East Jordan, photographed by Michigan native Phil Stagg. It’s only 300 pieces, and I’m certain I can wring additional bonding time out of them later as we rehash our Breezeway day.

The jigsaw puzzle inspires a trip to the No. 6 Locomotive Steam Engine on display at the Sportman’s Park. The East Jordan & Southern Railroad operated from 1901–1961 and the engine is a historic landmark. While we get a pic, a fisherman walks by carrying a bow and a long arrow with a barbed tip. Tim gets the scoop: The guy bowfishes the Jordan River, which runs next to town. His catch? Usually carp.

We’ve never seen a real, live bowfisherman. I should have had it on my scavenger list.

Breezy History The Breezeway started 15 years ago when a group of likeminded people decided to piece together their quiet, little towns and give them a shared identity. The idea truly took off after their task force secured a $25,000 state grant to make an official map, mile markers and signage. THE ORIGIN, THE QUEST

O

ne of the things

I love most about writing stories for Northern Home & Cottage is discovering each homeowner’s Up North origin/ quest story: That first moment when someone feels their soul attach to our watery, forested dune landscape, and My brother, mom, grandfather and me their personal quest to spend as much in front the Soda Shop (now the Western Avenue Grill) in Glen Arbor, the summer time here as possible begins. The origin of 1962. story might be based on childhood summers here, or marrying someone who already had a connection here, or a hundred other scenarios. The quest is usually about renting cottages on various lakes to try them out, endless property searches, and working and saving to purchase a piece of the North.

Although my Up North origin story happened almost 60 years ago (eek!), I remember it vividly. My family lived in Ypsilanti at the time, but most weekends my parents packed my brother and me into our Plymouth Valiant and drove to Glen Arbor where my grandparents lived. The hills on CR-677 between M-72 and the Glen Lakes are still pretty good-sized, but in the early 1960s, before they were graded, they felt like a roller coaster—our car would actually catch a whiff of air as it crested each hill. On top of that fun, there was the excitement of who in the car could spot the aquamarine shimmer of Glen Lake first. It was during one of these moments, when I was maybe 3 or 4 years old, that I remember thinking: Why would anyone live anywhere else?

At age 18 I packed my bags and moved from my parents’ suburban Washington D.C. home to Northern Michigan and, except for my years at Michigan State, I never left. Not so arguably, I would have made more money if I’d stayed on the East Coast, but every morning when I walk the dog down the street to Sleeping Bear Bay, my life’s decision is validated.

This issue of Northern Home & Cottage has several origin/quest stories.

I particularly like Jene Matzen’s and Gregg Trahey’s search for lakefront property that ended when they fell absolutely and helplessly in love with a swath of river frontage—that was within their budget. I hope their story is an inspiration for anyone on an Up North quest.

family’s summer cottage, he knew he’d need to think big when adding on a porch since the home itself is only 800 square feet. Planning to use the porch as the main living area during the summer, Presley designed the porch to be 14 feet deep—deep enough, he says, for chairs to be turned for face-to-face conversation. He also put a roof over the porch so that it could be used even in inclement weather. Another important feature, he says, is the downdraft fan that cools on still, hot days and disperses mosquitoes in the evening. Add comfortable furniture, like this sturdy wicker, to Presley’s list of must-haves for a livable porch.

Functional certainly, but how did Presley make the porch so darn appealing? By going bold and even a bit whimsical with the design elements beginning with the classical 30-inch-tall Greek Revival architrave above the columns. Add to that the white and French country blue trim-work and black-and-white striped furniture cushions, and this porch is a head-turner.

Last, but by no means least, is the American flag mounted on one column. Besides its patriotic factor, Presley tells us he especially loves the flag for its red stripes. “Red is the most seasonally seen color,” he explains. “It’s a prominent color that makes a bold statement.”

RUSTIC KICKED UP Design Chuck Beale, Durango Homes Location Frankfort

“PORCHES DEPEND ON the style of the house and they need to be functional as well as having curb appeal,” says Chuck Beale, owner of Durango Homes based in Frankfort.

To that end, the porch Beale designed on this home in his Sleeping Bear Woods development, just north of Frankfort, is 8 feet wide, effectively creating an outdoor room for this diminutive 1,250-square-foot home. Keeping the elements rustic to match the rest of the cabin-style home, Beale used hand-hewn timbers for the posts and the gable. Small it may be, but the home’s interior sports upscale touches, including granite countertops, custom cabinetry and hardwood floors, so Beale added lux touches to the porch as well, including a rusted steel roof (that looks like copper) and Epay wood decking. The exterior is painted subdued, organic colors both to match the home’s interior but also to blend into its wooded setting. The final touch on a great porch, says Beale, is an inviting path to it—thus the stone pavers and steps and lovely woodsy landscaping.

“A GOOD FRONT PORCH should welcome guests in and give them a snapshot or preview of what to expect when entering the home,” says designer Kelly Konoske. Additionally, she says, the porch should have an inviting ambiance created by elements like flower boxes and plants. “Any greenery that brings the landscape onto the porch is a must.”

The porch Kelly designed for this Harbor Springs’ home does all of the above. Windows with black mullions that contrast with the porch’s white walls, ceiling and millwork details echo the chic modern look of the home’s interior—as does the modern aluminum porch furniture outfitted with linen cushions. Pots of easy-to-grow succulents (they don’t need direct light!) add flourish to the teak coffee table.

The glass-paneled railing system lets in the view, while the space beneath the bottom rail allows easy sweeping of the AZEK synthetic floor that looks like wood but holds up to wet, sandy feet much better. Meanwhile, the classic coastal-style columns with their clean, flat panels frame the view of Little Traverse Bay across the street.

n 2009, john and lisa dykema

bought a small fixer-upper cottage on the west side of Elk Lake. The purchase had come after years of consideration about where in Northern Michigan, exactly, they wanted to have a summer cottage. While the Dykemas live in Wisconsin, John is from Michigan and often vacationed in Northern Michigan—many of those visits on or near Elk Lake. Over a period of summers, the family “tried out” rentals on various Up North bodies of water, including Grand Traverse Bay and Torch, Big Glen and Elk lakes. Eventually, the couple opted for the cottage on Elk Lake because of John’s connection to the area and its gorgeous shades of Caribbean blue.

As excited as the family was about their new summer home, there was a problem. It

The cottage just wasn’t big enough for all those long limbs. When a lot (with another small cottage on it) went up for sale next to their cottage, the couple jumped at the chance to purchase it and decided to take both cottages down and build a home tailored to their family.

Besides having more space, Lisa dreamed of an Up North home that lived like a tropical beachfront escape—a barefoot-friendly dwelling with an abundance of windows to flood the home with light and views of Elk Lake. Also high on her wish list: A glassed-in front entry that would allow a view of the lake through windows on the lake side. “I wanted to feel like I was home, but also on vacation the moment I pulled in the driveway,” Lisa says.

Lisa researched Northern Michigan architects on the web, as well as in back issues of Northern Home & Cottage. Architect Ken Richmond soon rose to the top of her list.

When they met, Richmond impressed the couple with his enthusiasm and inspirational ideas for their site. As importantly, the Dyke-

20

mas trusted him to fuse their ideas for a home with a tropical ambiance into a design that fit into the Northern Michigan landscape. “That’s where Ken really took charge and gave us what we wanted and made our home look like Northern Michigan,” Lisa says.

With plans for the house rolling, Richmond recommended Midlake Builders, among several other contractors. After the couple met with Midlake owner Bob Schmerheim, they knew they had their design-and-build team. “Midlake was wonderful,” Lisa says. “Their workmanship was awesome, and if there were any problems or questions, they were on it immediately, contacting us and solving the issue.”

The home, finished last summer, is everything the couple envisioned and more.

Set on a slope above the lake, the property is blessed with three different directional views, up, down and across Elk Lake. Richmond took full advantage of those views with

a plan that “rambles” along the ridge in cabin-like living spaces (master suite, great room, study, guest wing) all connected by glassed-in hallways. While the Dykemas had originally requested a one-floor home, Richmond couldn’t resist designing in two watchtowers—one for John’s office and another as the gateway to an upper-level deck and a space that the couple is planning to turn into a bunk room.

“Going to the second floor gave another layer of panoramic interest,” Richmond says. “Each lookout has a separate view.” Needless to say, the couple is thrilled that Richmond pushed for the towers.

BESIDES HAVING MORE SPACE, LISA DREAMED OF AN UP NORTH HOME THAT LIVED LIKE A TROPICAL BEACHFRONT ESCAPE. By cladding the exterior in materials native to Northern Michigan—stone, wood shingles, cedar posts and planked white pine—Richmond assured that the home would fit into its Northern Michigan setting. “All the elements make it feel casual and campy, like an Up North compound,” Richmond says.

“I wanted white oak cabinets but I wanted the finish totally natural—not shiny or waxy. He created something special to seal everything.”

The home’s seamless connection to the outdoors adds to its timeless, organic serenity. A patio at the entrance of the home offers a lake view through one of the glassed-in hallways. On the lakeside, a patio sheltered by three walls gives way to an open-air patio set against a band of lawn that in turn eases down to the beach area and to a stone terrace set into the slope.

Both Lisa and Richmond credit landscape designer Anita Silverman with the graceful, subtle landscaping that perfectly complements the structures.

The home is everything John and Lisa wanted and more, right down to the view of the lake that is visible through the glassed-in foyer—the view that gives Lisa an “Ahhh, I’m home,” feeling, each time she pulls into the drive.

Gemma’s family enjoys summers at their home on Walloon Lake in Petoskey—her familiarity with Up North has naturally opened the way for her to garner clients in the area.

One such client recently asked Gemma to rejuvenate their Harbor Springs lake home, designed by renowned Northern Michigan architect Nick White. The home was originally built

by Jeff Ford of Evening Star Joinery, and Gemma feels fortunate that Jeff and his crew were able to work on the renovation/refresh with her. “His attention to detail and his execution of projects is fabulous,” she says.

Here, Gemma walks us through her thoughts on the timeless refresh of this beautiful Harbor Springs home.

The home has great bones, but the client wanted a complete refresh of the interiors when they purchased it. This beautiful property sits right on Lake Michigan with panoramic views within walking distance of downtown Harbor Springs. With a fairly constant stream of summer visitors, the clients need plenty of room for their family. The goal of the recreation room, shown here, was to create a space for the family to gather, play games at the custom game table, shuffleboard (behind the sofa) and watch movies as a larger group.

Whenever we start a project, we look at it holistically from the architecture to the exterior landscape. In this case, we developed the color palette to connect the interiors to the stunning lake views outside the window. Blue and white is always a timeless, serene and inviting color palette.

It is hard to pick a favorite in such a large house, but we just adore the living room space, shown in this photo. We focused a great deal on alignments and creating cohesion, here and throughout the house. For instance, in the living room, the coffee table was designed to align with the lines of the custom designed rug, which aligned with the center line of the fireplace, etc. This type of detail creates a harmonious effect.

We wanted to make the home luminous, serene and relaxing.

With that in mind, we refreshed the kitchen with new lighting and window treatments.

The billiards room was originally paneled with dark wood. Painting the wood White Dove by Benjamin Moore made the room flow cohesively with the rest of the light-filled home.

inding their piece of up

North took husband-andwife Jena Matzen and Gregg Trahey decades.

While they make their home in North Carolina, Gregg has summered in Northern Michigan his entire life—and after he met and married Jena, she joined him. In the beginning, the couple dreamed of Lake Michigan property, but that always seemed a bit out of reach. Nevertheless, they never stopped searching for their piece of the North, trying out rental properties in various locations on their vacations. For several summers, the couple rented a cabin on Green Lake in Interlochen, near the headwaters of the Betsie River— a beautiful river that they enjoyed canoeing.

Then one day in 2018, while they were at home in North Carolina, 12 acres on the Betsie River popped up for sale on Zillow. They could hardly believe their eyes. They recognized the property in the listing—they’d canoed past it.

Unable to reach the listing Realtor, they reached out to Laurie Bouwman of Bouwman Realty Group in Interlochen. “She jumped on it—called us back within the hour and got the ball rolling,” Jena says. With Bouwman’s help, the couple purchased the land in September of 2018.

Their search for a contractor went much the same way. The first contractor they met with basically turned them down after they told him they didn’t want a big house—just a well-designed house. Then they interviewed Colin Bushong of CMB Construction, whom Gregg had found on the internet. “When we met with him the stars aligned; we just adore him,” Jena says. “Colin is the king of collaboration. I had a total vision and at every turn Colin and his team helped me create that vision.”

The couple began the design process by giving Bushong plans they found on the internet that had many of the elements they

were looking for. Bushong then worked with Jen Markey of Thomas Building Design to refine the plans for the couple. The basic floor plan is a U-shape with a great room facing the river. A covered patio and the high riverside ceilings associated with the monoplane roof allows the 1,376-square-foot home to live much larger than it is.

Jena’s precise vision for her small but welldesigned house included a modern-rustic aesthetic—describing her tastes as “Champagne on a beer budget.” At all stages of the project, she credits Bushong and his team, including interior consultant Mary Kynkor-Bird, with figuring out a way to achieve the home style she wanted while sticking to the couple’s budget.

When Jena wanted a cement master bath sink but found it was too pricey, for example, Bushong suggested he build a custom vanity with a quartz top. She loves it. For granite kitchen

countertops, he sent Jena and Gregg to Cadillac Cut Stone to look through remnants where they found a pattern they are enamored with. To give the home a high-end, custom touch, Bushong purchased a teak butcher block online and had his carpenters use it to build kitchen shelving, a fireplace mantel and that stunning, grainmatched master bathroom vanity. Beyond the aesthetics that the teak brings to the home, all parties involved love the fact that the butcher block is manufactured from scrap wood, so it’s essentially a green product.

Because of Bushong’s resourcefulness, the couple was able to splurge on luxuries including a polished concrete floor, a curbless and doorless shower, hidden LED trim lighting in the great room that adds drama and steel louvers (fabricated by Wheelock & Sons Welding) on the exterior that offer shade from direct sun while giving the home an industrial vibe.

But Bushong’s greatest sleight of hand for the home was probably the exterior cladding.

“We really wanted to honor the property and build something that was going to blend in and not be obnoxious,” Jena says. “A lot of people float the Betsie and I didn’t want it to stand out more than it had to.” While weathered barnwood siding was the couple’s first

choice, they knew it was beyond their budget.

Initially, Bushong worked on several board-andbatten concepts to try to recreate the barnwood look, but nothing seemed quite right. Then he discovered WoodHaven Log & Lumber, based in Mio. The company manufactures a wood siding that mimics weathered barnwood. “Colin said, ‘I think this will work,’ and that’s how we ended up with a house that blends in and has drama to it,” Jena says.

Jena and Gregg aren’t the only ones who love their new home. The house won five out of six Judge’s Awards, as well as the People’s Choice Award, on the 2020 Home Builders Association of Grand Traverse Home Tour.

hef/owner michael peterson is putting a twist on the classic Neapolitan at his latest venture—American House Wood Fired Pizza in Elk Rapids. He follows the rules when it comes to making and baking the dough. Ingredients: Caputo 00 flour, water, yeast and fresh salt. Texture: Thin and puffy.

But when it comes to toppings, Michael and his team shake it up with ingredients like fennel sausage, leeks, blackened shrimp and crispy Brussels sprouts. n a region that is part of some 10,500 miles of Great Lakes coastline, I’ve long wondered why we don’t see more preparations of freshwater fish. Where is the walleye ceviche? What about pickled smelt? Shouldn’t our bagel shops have local lox? My cookbook collection is teeming with recipes for preparing ocean fish in such ways and it made me wonder: “Is it safe to ‘cold cook’ fish from waters without any salinity?”

While I don’t recommend packing your sushi knife the next time you go charter fishing, there is good news. Many experts agree that preparations like saltcuring and marinating in acid work on quality freshwater fish. “Any treatment that controls microbes and parasites in seafoods will work just as well for freshwater fish,” Harold McGee, author of “On Food & Cooking” and an authority on the chemistry of food, tells Traverse. Those with underlying health issues should stick to fish that is blast-frozen first, but those who eat raw oysters and beef tartare might join me in thinking about certain native species in new—or not so new—ways.

Scandinavians have been curing salmon in a combination of salt and sugar since the Middle Ages. In more recent years, adding grated beets to the curing mixture has become increasingly popular. Doing so gives any spring brunch spread a stunning, fuchsiahued focal point. While some include aquavit or gin, I like to use the same spice notes, without the booze. As the ice starts to melt and area fish begins showing back up at your favorite fish counter, give this easy technique a try with lean or “common” lake trout—which tastes incredible packed, literally, in all this flavor.

1. Place salt, sugar, horseradish, dill, beets and zest into a bowl and stir to combine.

2. In a hot dry skillet, toast the spices until they are crackling and fragrant, about 2 minutes.

Using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder, coarsely grind.

4. Sprinkle the ground spices onto the trout. Spoon the saltbeet mixture on top of the fish, pressing the mixture into the fish with your hands.

5. Fold the plastic wrap to create a tight seal, using a second piece if necessary. Place the fish on a baking tray and cover with a baking dish filled with cans or other heavy objects. Place in the fridge for three days, flipping the fish every 12 hours and draining any beet juice that has escaped each time you do so.

6. At the 72-hour mark, remove the fish from the refrigerator and unwrap. Scrape off the cure and massage under cold running water to remove anything stubborn. Transfer to a serving platter and pat dry with a paper towel. Working on an angle, thinly slice the trout and serve with bagels and cream cheese or as the plated main affair. –S.B.

3. Set a piece of plastic wrap that is more than twice as long as your side of fish onto a flat work surface, placing the trout—skin side down—in the center.

Ramp Gibson Serves 1

2 ½ ounces quality vodka, such as Valentine Vodka 1/2 ounce dry vermouth 1-2 bar spoons of pickling juice from the jar of ramps 1 pickled ramp for garnish Add ice to a martini glass to chill it. Fill a mixing glass or mason jar with ice and add the vodka, dry vermouth and 1 or 2 bar spoons of pickling juice. Stir the mixture 50 times to melt water from the ice cubes, a key ingredient in a proper martini. Discard the ice in the martini glass, strain contents of the mixing container into the glass and garnish with a pickled ramp and a peppercorn from the brine. –S.B. jelly jars with thoroughly cleaned ramps, bulb end down. Add a bay leaf and a few pinches of mustard seed, black peppercorns and fennel seeds to each jar. Bring 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar and 1 Tablespoon salt to a boil, stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve.

Pour the hot liquid into the jars, trim any excess leaves and seal.

ast of the mississippi, ramps are the quintessential harbinger of spring. When this member of the onion family emerges from the forest floor, foragers know that Northern Michigan’s growing season is just around the corner.

Due to the recent popularity of ramps, some suggest that we only harvest one or two leaves from each plant so that this wild edible can continue growing until it seeds itself.

Needless to say, if we are clearing a trail in the woods or otherwise end up with a sustainable shovelful of the entire plant, we use them wisely—pickling them so that they last well beyond their fleeting peak. Pickled ramps are great on salads and burgers, but we especially love them in our martinis.

Since the early 1900s, a martini garnished with a cocktail onion instead of an olive has been known as a Gibson. While experts debate the origins of this classic (illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, steamship tycoon Walter D.K. Gibson and boxing promoter Billy Gibson have all been linked to the original), no one can debate that using a house pickled ramp instead of a grocery store cocktail onion feels like a serious upgrade.

While many Gibson recipes call for gin, a clean high-quality vodka really lets the briny, garlicky flavors of a pickled ramp shine.

unners, bikers and equestrians rejoice —a series of trail connections that will allow recreators to journey north from Burt Lake to Mackinaw City continue to move forward thanks to the efforts of the Top of Michigan Trails Council.

The council, in partnership with numerous individuals, organizations and government agencies, is working to complete the Burt Lake Trail, a non-motorized 18-mile pathway that will be the first east-west connector in Michigan linking two major state trails—the North Western State Trail, which begins in Petoskey and runs to Mackinaw City, and the North Central State Trail, which starts in Waters and also ends in Mackinaw City.

This highly anticipated connection will pick up the NWST in Brutus and end at the NCST in Topinabee, 44

creating a 75-mile loop. The Burt Lake Trail will also connect to the Iron Belle Trail—a planned bike route from Belle Isle in Detroit to Iron Mountain in the U.P. About 10 miles of the Burt Lake Trail have already been completed since 2013, including a 1.8-mile stretch finished in May 2020 that runs from West Burt Lake Road to East Burt Lake Road. The next phase of construction, anticipated this year, will add 1.5 miles of trail allowing folks to bike from Maple Bay to Hoppies Restaurant on East Burt Lake.

The final proposed phases of the project are a 3.2-mile connection to the NCST and a 3.6-mile connection to the NWST. A trailhead is located at the south end of Mundt Road near Elmhurst; no parking on the trail.
