O

f all the things that have shaped my musical sensibilities, perhaps nothing has been as powerful as the mixtape.

My older sister, Patrice, went away to college, got cool and became a campus DJ; she mailed her younger sisters mixtapes of her sho. We listened to them until they garbled and wore out or broke. To this day, I can’t hear Duran Duran’s “Union of the Snake” without imagining it segueing into “Original Sin” by INXS; The Pet Shop Boy’s “Suburbia” merging into New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle.”

Her tapes were like a Godiva sampler box—meant for experimenting, finding favorites, sharing. With them, my sister was shaping a new identity for herself and offering us a glimpse into her world. Those pink-and-yellow Sony 90-minute cassettes whet our appetites for more and different music of similar and complementary flavors, and our sensibilities were transformed.

I became a mixtape master myself, sometimes copying from those original Sonys to create totally new experiences and forms of self-expression. Chill mixes, dance mixes, road-trip mixes, teen ennui mixes layered thick with Depeche Mode.

When I went to college and fell for another student who was a legit, beyond-campus DJ on Cincinnati’s alt/ indie station 97X, I’d tape his show and listen with an ear for unlocking his sensibilities—and his heart. We became friends but I was terribly shy, dazzled by his ease and charisma. The only way I could reach him was a mixtape of my own. The carefully selected, melodramatic run of Sinéad O’Connor and The The and XTC was the perfect medium to say what my words couldn’t, wrapped in coded lyrics, carefully chosen order and the element of surprise: I get you. I see you. Please see me.

It worked, even if our subsequent relationship didn’t; what real-life college connection could surpass the perfection of those perfectly curated musical maps of our souls?

Although the format may have morphed, from plastic cassettes to burned CDs and Spotify playlists, the essence of the mixtape remains the same: the mixtape is, as writer Andee Tagle quipped in and article in The Atlantic on the

subject, a love language of its own. The curation, the assemblage and flow, from A side to B side, were painstaking creations that led the listener down a musical path toward some inevitable feeling or conclusion.

For me, every magazine we create feels like a mixtape— I’ve often used the metaphor to explain what an editor does, and the curation angle is on point. But more deliciously and shamelessly riffing on the concept is our story this month “Your Summer Mixtape,” a deep-dive into the Northern Michigan music scene profiling the vanguards, the up-andcomers and those on the cusp of discovery. Baked into the story are the songs we can’t stop thinking about, and the story itself flows in mixtape form, artist choices and song picks perfectly paced from beginning to end. D

e vor dairy farm & creamery owners Henk and Jackie De Vor were taking a break in their Kalkaska pasture, chilling with their herd and a picnic—their favorite way to de-stress—when Jackie said, “I wish everybody could have a day in our life.” Thus, the inspiration to offer “cow cuddling” was born.

Here among the red barns and pastures of the former Shetler Family Farms, the De Vors raise and milk their grass-fed herd and make Old World farmstead gouda as well as several varieties of ice cream. Their Jersey girls love soaking up attention; as Jackie likes to say, “Happy cows make the best milk.”

The De Vors started offering hour-long cuddling sessions with the herd in 2022. Cow cuddling isn’t a foreign concept to Henk, who grew up in the Netherlands and studied agriculture and cheesemaking. Cow hugging (koe knuffelen) is a common therapy there for children with disabilities, and some farms offer it as a wellness practice.

Still, the couple was surprised when the concept took off so quickly here in Northern Michigan. More than 100 people came to the farm last year to hang out and snuggle the gals—parents with children, couples, work friends, people seeking healing and those coming just for the joy of it. The De Vors even helped one man surprise his wife on their wedding anniversary, crafting a table atop a giant milk can, setting it with a charcuterie tray and champagne, then hiding it all behind a tractor.

Like this friendly farm couple, Jersey cows are sociable and curious. The De Vors say they’re never worried when they lead visitors into the pasture, where 100 cows might circle around. People tend to bond with a single cow or a few from the group. Chewy, a favorite, has been known to (gently) take a guest’s arm or coat in her mouth, leading to hilarious photos. Cashmere and Chickadee are “pure love,” says Jackie, while Honeybee is the class clown who’s always licking guests or mischievously stealing their hats. Last fall, two notoriously shy cows went right up to a new guest, lying protectively at her feet to everyone’s surprise. “Do you think they can sense that I’m pregnant?” the woman asked. “We just found out this morning.”

The real party begins at 6 p.m. on Friday with a massive street bash radiating from the intersection of Ludington Avenue and James Street. INTERLOCHEN ARTS FESTIVAL

If you’re the type of person who lives for a chocolate sampler or beer tasting flight, Interlochen delivers the same feels for the eclectic music lover. This year’s headliners include ’80s throwback Styx, Motown royalty the Four Tops and Temptations, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and alt/pop touring phenom Train (whose devoted followers call themselves Trainiacs). Plus, performances by the hundreds of campers who study music, film, theater, visual arts, creative writing and dance at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

GREAT LAKES CENTER FOR THE ARTS

BAROQUE ON BEAVER

For 10 days, Beaver Island hosts singers and instrumentalists drawn from across the state and beyond who perform at churches, galleries, schools, even outside the lighthouse.

And, despite the name, it’s not just Baroque music or even strictly classical.

The concert hall in Bay Harbor celebrates its fifth year of bringing world-class performers to Northern Michigan. Progressive bluegrass mandolinist Sam Bush, multi-Grammy winners Arturo Sandoval and the Manhattan Transfer, and the original “rock band with horns” Chicago are among those on tap at the tiny waterfront community.

MUSIC IN THE PARKS

BAY VIEW

The lawn fills up with chairs, blankets, people, even the occasional four-legged visitor for these neighborhood concerts with a laid-back vibe. The Thursday night shows feature some of the area’s best talent (Miriam Pico, the Bay Area Little Big Band), bringing together Traverse City community members, visitors and Grand Traverse Pavilions residents.

This summer community near Petoskey began as part of a cultural, religious and political education movement called Chautauqua. Each year it hosts operas, musicals, chamber music, vespers performances and pops concerts. On the pops end, this summer brings Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox and Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Talk about venues. The Glen Arbor Arts Center welcomes regional and national artists to perform at the center, as well as at scenic beaches and historical barns. This year’s artists in residence, PULSE Saxophone Quartet, will be performing at various spots from June 12–25. photo by Carly Paszek

Traverse City’s Cherry Fest is more than just pie (though we’d never scoff at pie). Chicago is popping up here for a show, as is Theory of a Deadman, Jordan Davis and more.

The bayside outdoor setting at the Open Space says summer like nothing else.

Blues, rock, funk and R&B artists from Detroit, Grand Rapids and elsewhere perform in Cadillac, Manistee, Ludington, Pentwater, Reed City and Elberta on a different night each week.

Moored in West Bay, Traverse City’s largest private sailing yacht is a queen among the charter boats and daysailers with a poetic stature and an easy grace. Her name is Althea, a classic two-masted yawl with more than six decades behind her. In Greek mythology, Althea was the daughter of a king, a queen in her own right and, in some accounts, the mistress of Poseidon, god of the sea. A fitting name for this boat that shines like revered royalty, small waves lapping affectionately against her hull.

The low evening sun sets the water to sparkling and the teak deck gleams as the last few passengers climb aboard for a sunset cruise. Captain Brett Derr uses the massive wheel to steer deftly past the tall ships docked at Discovery Pier, then raises the mizzen as first mate Jack Smiley preps the main. Once under sail, the boat glides toward Power Island, the turns so smooth I hardly notice. “She tacks on a dime,” Derr notes; the bay’s consistent winds make this region one of his favorite places in the world to sail.

Derr is no stranger to the North’s waters.

He captained the iconic Tall Ship Manitou, a replica of an 1800s cargo schooner, for seven years before founding Compass Rose Sailing Company with his wife, Heather, in 2021, a longtime dream inspired by a childhood where summers meant living on a boat.

Derr is a child of the sea.

Born prematurely, Derr spent his first few weeks in an incubator. His parents, anxious to get on the water for their inaugural twomonth summer boat trip, tried again and again to convince doctors to let them take their son home early. Derr laughs while telling the story—and also insists it’s true. His parents’ love for the water was fueled by his father’s childhood, spent growing up in upstate New York and spending family vacations in the The Althea still has its original woodstove, an important feature for offshore racers who’d live aboard for many days at a time.

The steel construction is modeled after North Sea fishing cutters. A picture in the cabin shows the original signal flag, written partly in Dutch, and there’s a stack of Hudson Bay wool blankets—what the original crew would have used.

The thought of summer arriving used to fill Drew Hale with fear. “We really fried eggs on the sidewalk, man,” he recalls from his years growing up in El Paso.

After 15 years in Northern Michigan, he has finally stopped looking at lakes as a mirage, even though he is still a Texan at heart. It’s home now with his wife Emily Hale—and so, like good locals, they never take summer for granted.

For a man with three adopted boys (all turning 10 or 11 this year), a new boat hobby and a career in country, blues and rock music, Hale seems downright relaxed. His faith grounds him and has always been a big part of his expression as an artist, and where music started for him as a shy piano-playing kid.

There’s something special about this summer for him. Launched last year in Petoskey, The Shouting Bones (aka Holly and Eric Jaqua) may not have existed without caffeine and a stubborn, patient crush. “He thinks he was into me first, but I really made the first move,” Holly shares. That was more than five years ago when she hired The Pistil Whips to play a show at her coffee shop and Eric walked in (he’s been playing with the group for more than 10 years now; their new album is expected this fall).

She was into playing punk rock at the time, and he was into her. The Michiganders married last year; the indie-centric duo has always wanted to write and perform together. “To play now feels more special and there’s more of a bond,” Eric adds.

Their name, funnily enough, was the first one that felt right after they used a band-name generator app live on the recording of their podcast Rep Your Set to pick one. They’ve leaned into it with macabre and tongue-in-cheek ballads like “I’m Going to Be the One Who Holds You When You Die.” Some of their upcoming sessions will be at local haunts including Ethanology Distillation in Elk Rapids, Mammoth Distilling in Bay Harbor and The Little Fleet in Traverse City. facebook.com/shoutingbones

With stirring arrangements, reflective lyrics and a voice that stretches from warm and wooly to a cool, airy silk, the music of Eliza Thorp casts a meditative cocoon that still commands we sit up and listen.

The Petoskey native and Berklee College of Music grad credits NoMi’s Caroline Barlow and Charlie Millard (whose accordion graces Thorp’s excellent ’22 album, Stories We Told Along the Way) “for believing in me as a musician and giving me a stage (literally) to share my stories.”

Check. Living in Frankfort? That, too. It all makes sense in the world of troubadour Tim Jones. His wife Katie Jones had long summered in Frankfort, and after she was named executive director of the lovingly restored Garden Theater downtown, they relocated. Much to his delight: “I’ve always wanted to be here,” Jones says. However, finding a home wasn’t easy—by a long shot—and their experience led him to become deeply involved with the Frankfort Area Community Land Trust.

His rootsy sound embraces country and Americana. The singer-songwriter has lived in Los Angeles (where he and Katie met), New York and Nashville, and is or has been a part of Whiskey Wolves of the West, Truth & Salvage Co., Old Pike, Beej and Teej and other outfits, noting that he

prefers working with others. Jones also teaches songwriting at Interlochen Center for the Arts and leads songwriting workshops at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

acoustic-folk way around North America, our collective heart cracked. When word came that the family planned to park in Nashville indefinitely, it fully broke.

Yet we couldn’t hate Music City for taking her. It’s where the prolific singersongwriter, who has released one album nearly every year since her first (2007’s Blackberries, recorded in a Charlevoix pole barn), recorded what we believe is her best LP yet: 2022’s Time Traveler.

An honest, introspective account of her last half-decade—crisscrossing three countries, growing her family, losing her beloved father, finding her way again— every track seems built by and for the wheel-turning rhythms of the road.

That road ultimately brought Rae and family back to Northern Michigan, but don’t count on a live show soon. Rae’s husband/manager Jason Stewart tells us she’s pressed pause on recording and performing until 2024, while she works on another project: “Baby number five … due July 5.”

Michigan Rattlers

Stripped-down steel-toe rock with a rustcountry edge and pure Midwestern heart, the Michigan Rattlers—Graham Young (lead vocals/guitar), Adam Reed (bass), Christian Wilder (piano) and Tony Audia (drums)—are as rollicking a live band as they are barstool therapist for the lonesome and life-weary.

We’ve loved ’em both ways, always, since their Petoskey high school days as a classic rock cover band to their bandmate-by-bandmate trickle to Los Angeles and the inevitable raves that followed their first EP of originals, 2016’s self-titled Michigan Rattlers, and 2018’s Evergreen.

Rolling Stone called them one of “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know” and by 2019, audiences around the nation—at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Electric Forest and dozens more—heard and loved ’em, too. The pandemic halted the band’s relentless tour

A natural southpaw, Blake Elliott began playing her mom’s guitar upside down before finally buying (and restringing) her own. “Music was part of the household,” says Elliott, who was immersed in everything from James Taylor and Barbra Streisand to The Chieftains and Weather Report.

Working past what she calls “horrible” stage fright early on, the Traverse City musician became one of the region’s most recognizable performers, with her soulful, bluesy take on originals like “Back in Line,” which “is about the end of a relationship and you know you’ll be okay,” she shares. At the other end of the spectrum, “Here I Go” is about falling in love at an inopportune time.

For artists Katie Larson and Sav Buist, it wouldn’t be summer without multiple stops in their home state, among their most loyal and long-standing fans.

Recently signed by Sony Masterworks, The Accidentals offer a unique blend as diverse as Michigan itself. And this year marks a new dawn for the hit band, as longtime drummer Michael Dause is stepping away to focus on other projects after eight years with the group. Detroit’s Katelynn Corll, who recently sat in at SXSW in Austin, will now wo’man the sticks and help shape the group’s sounds. According to Buist, they’re leaning into a time for “the music to assume a little less structure and a little more freedom and improvisation. We want to create experiences rather than just concerts.”

Life sometimes feels crazy (working flexible jobs, recording, touring seasonally and now accidentally running a mini artisanal pizza empire with his wife, illustrator Em Randall), yet Midwest musician Jack M. Senff has no regrets. Instead, he shares simply, “I don’t make a dime in music, but I have to catch these songs coming out of me while I can, right?”

Senff writes and scores the effusive albums, creates his own sounds and poetry, and always attempts to capture his here and now through the lyrics. As a way to give himself space and freedom, he hustles his vinyl records, his band merch and most recently launched Make Believe Pizza with creative and life partner Randall (vegetarian pies so popular via Instagram they sell out immediately; friends at Bubbie’s Bagels are hosting a popup each week this summer in Traverse City to help meet demand).

Following a migration to the hustle and bustle of elsewhere (Brooklyn, specifically), singer and songwriter A.S. Lutes has returned home and regained his passion for music. “My heart was always tuned to the Northern Michigan clock, and the city had different hours,” he shares.

Still, finding time to compose and perform is challenging—he and wife Lana Winter have one-year-old twins, a huge adjustment that coincided with the opening of The Alluvion, a new artist-driven performance space in downtown Traverse City that Lutes helped create—yet, he’s more than fine with it. When his boys watch him play (surprise live-recordings via Instagram where

Dad teases out new songs, ideas and connects with his loyal NoMi followers between parenting), Lutes is passing on something visceral and timeless.

This summer he’ll perform at The Union in Northport as part of a summer residency with some surprise collaborators, and, “I’ll work on songs from my upcoming album before recording,” Lutes says.

Northern Michigan can’t lay claim to Billy Strings; the 2021 Grammy-winning Bluegrass phenom only graced Traverse City for a few years between his hard-knock childhood as William Lee Apostol in central Michigan and a life-changing move to Nashville in 2015. But anyone lucky enough to have caught the kid dropping jaws while flatpicking on a TC street corner—or, eventually, on stage every Thursday night at the former Little Bohemia—talks like a proud parent: The boy done good, like we knew he would.

Astride his high, lonesome voice and heartstring-plucked lyrics, Strings runs his guitar wild, pushing traditional bluegrass into a new era of his own hard, fast and loud invention, prompting sold-out shows, legions of multi-generational fans and collaborations both awesome (Bluegrass legend Del McCoury, country star Luke Combs) and unexpected (Post Malone, masked rapper RMR).

Our favorite, though, is his 14-track collab with the man who taught Apostol to play guitar, his father, Terry Barber. A soundtrack of the seminal songs of Apostol’s childhood, 2022’s Me/And/Dad is a tender tribute to Bluegrass roots, Barber’s unique sound and the magic father and son make when their guitars sing together.

Happy news, fans: Though Strings’ several headliner shows this summer in the Midwest are sold out, he’s extended the tour with a stop at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Halloween.

CURATING A VERY FINE HOUSE

M

y home, a 1968 brady bunch-esque two-story, is filled with

family pieces: my parents’ antiques collected from across the country, and furniture my grandfather made—one ancient walnut tree downed in Yonkers, New York, in the 1940s spawned a collection of chairs, tables and stools so vast I have yet to count them all. My walls are covered in my dad’s own paintings—many are Northern Michigan landscapes, but the watercolor of a jazz saxophonist playing in a Cleveland bar that he painted when he was just 16 still astounds me. In between the paintings, photos of my loved ones grace every other available inch of space.

As a woman of a certain age, I look forward to freshening my home, a task that includes improving my curating and Marie Kondo skills, though it is doubtful that I will ever clear everything out and start again. But what if I turned back the clock 30 years? What style house would I live in? How would I decorate it? I would definitely look to two of the women whose work is featured in this summer issue of Northern Home & Cottage for inspo.

In our story “A is for Amazing,” ace renovator Carrie Drier shows us how to live large in a tiny A-frame. I share Drier’s love of these mid—last century cottages that feel as elemental as felled trees tied together in a teepee shape.

If I were her age I’d find one, too, and then look to her for direction in curating the space and furnishings. As in: No, Lissa, you don’t need every piece of furniture your family ever sat in or dined on. How about saving just that Gothic chair with its ornate, A-shaped headrest as a whimsical play on the classic shape? (I’d sneak in those old walnut stools later.)

And the art. I truly believe my artist dad would have supported me purchasing a large Katherine Corden canvas of a beach scene to feature on that back wall of the A-frame—the one that doesn’t have a sliding door to the outside. I think he would have respected her drafting skill, especially with figures, and that she has revisited the age-old theme of leisure (Renoir’s “Luncheon of the Boating Party” being the most beloved example) in a contemporary way. That painting hanging in my new/old A-frame would do precisely what Corden wants it to, as she says: “… communicate to visitors that family and friends and leisure are important [here].”

And then I’d invite all my friends and family over in their flip-flops and shorts and swimwear to grill out on the deck—exactly the lifestyle I’ve lived Up North for well over 30 years, but with a stylish, modern twist.

THE SCULPTED SCOOP Functional art that sweetens life’s daily moments.

AFTER retiring as a neurologist, Richard

Foa was drawn to working with wood, but not in the traditional, hand-hewn way—he was lured by the elegant, sculptural shapes created by woodturning, which allows for soft, clean curves and spheres created by manipulating wood against a lathe.

Not only does Foa use a lathe to make wooden sculptures, but he also loves elevating utilitarian items such as a simple ice cream scoop and bowl. This scoop ($25) is

made from Brazilian cherry, while the bowl ($40) is crafted from Michigan maple and coated with black milk paint, an old-fashioned and completely natural product.

Whether decorative or functional, most of Foa’s works are made from locally sourced hardwoods. “We have a host of nice woods here that people around the world envy,” he says.

DATED TO DREAMY Gretchen Knoblock resets the style clock on the great room in a 1990s Long Lake home.

GRETCHEN KNOBLOCK and her team at New Leaf Interiors worked with contractor Jeff Simonis to transform this dated home into a flowing space where rooms open into each other to easily accommodate plenty of people, but still provide cozy respites for quieter times of reflection and relaxation.

The great room reno included removing the walls on either side of the fireplace so it felt more connected to the kitchen. The wall with the bear on it (see before photo) was also taken out, a move that opened up the entire space to the rest of the house, flooding the entry and back hallways with natural light and allowing the magnificent lake view to be seen from the entire main floor. This airy feeling was accentuated by opening the staircase to

“float” to the lower level and switching out a spindle railing with a cable version.

“We rebuilt the whole exterior wall to accommodate larger, linear, more modern windows that expanded the view,” Knoblock explains.

Likewise, out went the chunky stone fireplace and golden oak woodwork and in went rusticmodern interior finishings, including white oak flooring, a reclaimed barnwood ceiling and a Wellington porcelain-tile fireplace with an inset television screen. Sherwin-Williams’ Urban Putty (walls) and Backdrop (trim) pull the look together.

The soft, contemporary furnishings include swivel chairs from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, a Surya rug, and the T-Brace coffee table and Maxwell sofa from Restoration Hardware.

BEACH BLISS Northern Michigan artist Katherine Corden captures the loungy, lovely grace of an afternoon on the water.

A MAN PULLING ON A T-SHIRT, a woman twisting her hair into a ponytail, friends stretched out in beach chairs, chatting amiably. Traverse City–based artist Katherine Corden weaves the sublime sacredness of a beach day out of small, perfectly executed moments. “I love drawing and painting the human figure, and people relaxed at the beach are my favorite poses to capture,” she says. While Corden’s deft figures are the bones of her work (a skill she attributes to a doctorate in physical therapy), her energetic palette breathes life into the flotsam and jetsam of the day: “The unexpected colors of a beach towel or someone’s bathing suit; the shadows cast from people moving on the beach and setting up for the day; flip flops or sandals discarded in a pail … all provide inspiration,” she says.

KITCHEN AND BATH DESIGNER DAWN WHYTE BROUGHT DAZZLING STYLE TO EACH OF SEVEN FULL BATHROOMS AND TWO HALF-BATHS IN A TOP-TO-BOTTOM RENO OF A HOME ON LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY. HERE’S A PEEK:

with their five children in a small, 1970s-era cottage outfitted with only one full bathroom and two half-baths, the homeowners decided it was time to add on so that the family could summer together as their clan grew in years to come. More bathrooms was a main focus of the whole-house redo that took several years. Six more bathrooms to be exact, as well as updating the original three. To make that happen, the homeowner worked with Kitchen and Bath Designer Dawn Whyte. “I walked by her shop and really liked her style,” says the homeowner. “It’s great because working with her is turnkey— she has a lot of tile and other materials right in her showroom that makes it very convenient. And she can really specialize.”

The pair’s search for just the right fixtures and surface elements extended from Whyte’s Petoskey showroom to Detroit and Grand Rapids. The result is a bevy of bathing beauties—all charming, all completely different. “I didn’t want them to be boring,” says the homeowner. “I wanted them fun and unique and to take advantage of all of the different tiles available.” fter years of summering

The cabinets are painted SherwinWilliams blissful blue, “just the color that I was looking for,” says the homeowner. arrie drier has always loved the rustic

A DESIGNER TRANSFORMS A CRAMPED COTTAGE INTO A BRIGHT AND SPACE-SAVING HIDEAWAY WITH A FRESH, MODERN VIBE.

charm of A-frames—the iconic cottages admired for their affordability and snowshedding roofs that spread throughout ski country in the middle of the last century. Drier once even planned a vacation to Salt Lake City around a stay in a particular A-frame—there, she learned an important lesson about functional space.

“Use of space is hard with an A-frame,” she explains. The cabin in Salt Lake was so tight it didn’t have space for a dining room table, and the living room was overly cramped.

When she bought her own A-frame outside of Lake Ann several years ago, Drier knew she wanted to maximize the living space with a full kitchen and enough room to play games at the kitchen table.

She also envisioned an open living area with views from the dining room table into the loft above. That dream was just the beginning of a much-needed total makeover for the old structure (built in 1991) that had long been used as a hunting camp.

Drier was in Covid-19 quarantine when she first saw a listing for the 1,100-square-

In the living room, a green L-shaped couch plays off the colors of the forested setting outside. Removing the fireplace and replacing it with a mini-split heating system opened up the living area, making space for a dining room table (game night!) and a daybed under the stairs to the loft. Finally, Drier replaced the hodgepodge mix of beat-up wood and cheap sheet vinyl flooring with luxury vinyl. The living room light is a 13-inch Mirage Chainmail Pendant from CB2. A Cosmo Bronze Pendant from Crate & Barrel hangs above the dining room table.

foot cottage, so she sent her husband along with her contractor, Kevin Umbarger, to look at the place. “It was in really rough shape,” Drier says, “but from the beginning, I had this vision of scalloped cedar shingles and a black metal roof.” A closedin front porch interfered with the sleek lines of the building, but, she says, “I knew once we ripped the front porch off it would make the whole A-frame stand out.”

On that first tour, Drier’s husband took a video of the cottage for her and when he showed her the kitchen, he tried telling her it wasn’t in too bad shape. Though she didn’t say anything at the time, Drier knew immediately it all had to go. The new

A furniture piece acts as a small kitchen island with two seats. Enclosing the old back door created space for a stackable washer and dryer, and a new sliding door opens up to the backyard.

Drier has been designing vacation homes since 2015 through her company Roost North and had done several smaller remodels before this A-frame project, so she’s had plenty of time to refine her style: a blend of streamlined modern with cozy and unusual accents—which is why she chose to keep some of the wood paneling inside the house.

Drier painted the walls with what she describes as her go-to white—Origami White from Sherwin-Williams. The terracotta color of the kitchen cabinets bounces off the white walls, giving the inside of the A-frame a light pink hue—not part of Drier’s original plan, but she likes the way it turned out. “I decided it’s what the space is meant to be,” she says.

“I didn’t want to rip out everything,” she says. “I wanted to keep some of the character.”

Creating space wherever possible became a priority. The team tore down a half-wall that divided the toilet from the vanity and closed off one of two separate entrances, creating room for a new vanity with double sinks. Sherwin-Williams Origami White walls and a custom mirror that mimics the shape of the A-frame round out the bathroom’s clean style and create a sense of spaciousness.

Under the roofline upstairs, Drier carved out room for a bedroom outfitted with twin beds, each with custom built-in shelves. She found more storage by replacing what she describes as an “ugly” old railing across the open side of the loft with a custom art deco-style bookcase that doubles as a railing. The newly freshened loft also features a king-size bed, new carpet and expanded

When Drier’s contractor tore down the paneling in the bathroom he found a surprise—a giant mural of a lake.

Sentimental as the mural might have been for someone else, Drier had the mural drywalled over—preserving a bit of mystery behind the walls. “The mural is still there for someone to discover in 30 years if they remodel again,” she says.

The living space extends with a new deck, which acts as an outdoor room offering plenty of seating. A pea-gravel pathway leads to a nearby fire ring and two custom A-frame storage sheds for keeping firewood dry.

Although the hideaway is just minutes from the village of Lake Ann, Drier hopes the tiny A-frame creates an in-the-middle-ofnowhere feeling of spaciousness and escape and a backdrop for the next generation’s memories.

A FAMILY REIMAGINES A BEACH HOUSE TO BLEND PERFECTLY WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD VIBE.

with the idea of a home on Sleeping Bear Bay in Glen Arbor. Especially for these homeowners, who for years had spent winters snowboarding and skiing Sugar Loaf and The Homestead along with summer vacations mooring their boat in the bay and offshore near South Manitou Island. When it was time to upgrade to a cottage of their own, the couple homed in on Glen Arbor, eventually narrowing their search to two houses, one on each side of the bay. Both homes, while different, were lovely, met their requirements and had drop-dead gorgeous water views.

In a stroke of genius, they asked their Realtor if they could spend an evening on each deck to watch the sunset while getting a feel for the property and setting.

of serenity. It offered a few more days of sunsets over the bay before the sun slipped behind Sleeping Bear Point at summer’s end, but it had less protection from the prevailing winds. At Cottage #2 they fell in love with the raised deck, bigger windows and open floor plan. The cottage’s layout made them feel more connected to the beach and the outdoors in general. A surprise was that the height of the deck nearly eliminated mosquitoes. They also observed a hive of activity on the beach. As they would learn later, the home next door was owned by people known far and wide as the gold standard for a big, friendly, funloving and active extended family.

Their decision? The deck and the more protective westward setting of Cottage #2 triumphed. Bay Cottage, as it was named, was a comfortable 1980s two-bedroom, three-bath home with an open floor plan and no garage. The couple knew that eventually they would need more space for their own big, friendly, fun-loving and active extended family. After 10 years, they decided it was time for Bay Cottage 2.0—a new cottage that would include the features they’d come to love about the old one, while adding bedrooms and storage.

Drawing on the inspiration from a folder of ideas the couple had meticulously gathered over the years, Caleb Norris and the team at Norris Design Productions worked with them to design a home that added space and storage while retaining the features of the existing home.

They kept the expansive raised deck and open floor plan they had come to love, replicated the original living space so that it lived small when it was just the two of them, but added space for

The couple chose to work with Caleb’s father, Scott Norris, owner of Scott Norris Construction. In addition to building highquality homes on-time and within budget, he also had a reputation for being super honest, approachable and transparent, all traits that were important to the couple.

sublime shoreline. The interior is flooded with views of Sleeping Bear Bay through expansive windows and glass doors that span the main floor—perched as it is 10 feet above ground level. Interior designer Carrie Long, who has previously worked with the homeowners, helped them pull together the design details. “We pingpong ideas off one another and it builds this energy,” she says. What Long calls a “casually chic” style blends natural materials including white oak flooring and cabinetry, quartzite counters, gray stone marble fireplace and a leather sofa. Long calls the unique collection of lighting pendants that she and the homeowners found from across the country “the jewelry of the space.”

Over the years, the couple has enjoyed becoming a part of the community.

Which brings us back to those neighbors with the steady hive of activity on their beach. What became of them? Both of the friendly, fun-loving and active families have become, well, like family.

The expansive deck off the great room offers front-row seats to the view of Sleeping Bear Bay.

he secret to a banging benedict: it’s all about that base. At Sam’s Graces Café in Petoskey, co-owners Victoria and Chad Conklin use a “lean dough” recipe for their English muffins, which yields a fluffy, chewy texture perfect for swiping up every last drop of lemony hollandaise sauce. The intimate 40-seat café—with a sweet streetside patio come summer—serves up a (fab) classic Benny with ham, but in the Great Lakes State, we suggest ordering yours with smoked whitefish.

The beer menu includes a range of styles, including a golden milk stout, ESB and Mexican lager. It’s rounded out by several ciders, seltzers and meads.

A few to sip: the Ole Crazy Legs stout, Sour Señorita raspberry sour, Niebla hazy IPA, blackberry hibiscus seltzer.

Loco Boys, a play on the phrase “Local Boy,” is a collaboration between owner Mike Mohrhardt and co-owner/brewer Andy Largent, both raised in Traverse City. The family-friendly brewery pays homage to Mohrhardt’s Mexican heritage, including the from-scratch kitchen, helmed by Chef Bryon Figueroa. Dabble among the “tour of house salsas,” then plates of fried plantains, birria tacos and, one of Mohrhardt’s favorites, enchiladas de mole poblano.

The traditional Mexican sauce includes a complex list of as many as 30 ingredients. Mole poblano is one of the most-beloved variations, with three types of chiles, Mexican chocolate, pumpkin seeds and coriander. (It’s deep, complex, and no, it doesn’t taste like chocolate.)

Largent’s ultra-local brewing tutelage includes some of the region’s best taprooms: North Peak Brewing Company, where he started out washing fermentation tanks before moving through the ranks at Rare Bird Brewpub, Grand Traverse Distillery, Stormcloud Brewing Company, The Workshop Brewing Company and The Filling Station.

We’re looking forward to sunny afternoons on Loco Boy’s patio in Traverse City’s Slabtown neighborhood, crafting some of summer’s finest moments.

To inspire: I’m now head over heels for the barbacoa burrito with its cumin potatoes, heirloom beans, queso Oaxaca, epazote and salsa rojo. (This burly bub packs some heat; order it with fresh guacamole to cool the spice.) I paired it with a Niebla, a gorgeously hazy IPA. Pozole Verde with roast pork, heirloom corn and a traditional squeeze of lime.

I

didn’t start my garden from seed this year. Back in March, I was consumed with a volunteer project.

As the deadline to turn on the grow lamp that is permanently mounted in our family bathroom came and went, I decided that one of the many benefits of living in Leelanau County is that I’m surrounded by plenty of professional farmers already doing all the heavy lifting. Now, as our nighttime temperatures start to climb, I’m reminded that I made the right call. From my favorite roadside haunts to the hardware store parking lot, the vegetable starts being sold are far more robust than any seedling I’ve ever nurtured at home. And if there is a plant that I can’t find, all I need to do is lean harder into my farmers market rotation this summer, buying my fruits and veggies as finished masterpieces straight from farmers’ hands. But even in years when I lighten my own garden load, I still have boundaries. There has never been a growing season where I didn’t at least plant herbs—whether it was in a city rooftop garden, an apartment window box or in a reclaimed flowerbed.

Typically, chives, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm, you name it, end up in or on our food; less often do herbs shine as the star ingredient. But when I’ve grown them myself, and especially when they are the only thing I’ve grown myself, it can be fun to put them in the spotlight. This Gin Tonic—without the “and” and served in a big wine

goblet the way they are throughout Spain—accomplishes exactly that. Pair those garden-fresh herbs with a few edible flowers you might also have popped in the ground (think: marigolds, violets, nasturtiums) and you’ve got this Gardener’s Gin Tonic. Whether you are cultivating acres, inches or have your own little circuit of farmers markets, one thing we all share is spending the growing season in the best place on earth to spend it—Northern Michigan.

^ Gardener’s Gin Tonic Serves 1 Lemon wheel 2 ounces gin 4 ounces tonic water 5 juniper berries (see note) 2 sprigs of any mixture of herbs such as rosemary, thyme, mint or dill

Swirl the glass around a few times, then add the sprigs of herbs, garnish with an edible flower or two, and serve.– S.B.
