GET TO KNOW GILIS
WELCOME TO THE ISLANDS
UTOPIA CATAMARAN
STYLISH ISLAND-HOPPING SNORKELLING AROUND THE GILIS
GET TO KNOW THE GILIS
Welcome To The Islands
What are The Gilis?
‘The Gilis’ refers to three islands to the northwest of Lombok. Those in the know don’t call them ‘The Gili Islands’; that’s because the word gili means ‘small island’ and saying ‘The Small Island Islands’ is a bit like saying ‘ATM Machine’.
The islands were permanently settled as recently as the 1970s. Before that, they were covered with mangroves and there was no easy access to fresh water. Western travellers have been coming to the Gilis only since the 1980s.
Since then, the islands have developed, at different rates, and are now favourite destinations for visitors. As well as the particular features that set each island apart, the Gilis share many attractions that draw people in.
Enjoy the Natural Beauty
The diverse marine life is a treat for visitors. Have you ever seen a Bobtail Squid? It’s an amazing creature that’s expert at camouflage, changing its body colour to protect itself from predators. It glows with natural iridescence at night as it darts through the water. Or a Green Sea Turtle? This magnificent animal can live up to 80 years and you might be lucky enough to see one while you’re diving or snorkelling.
The coral reefs surrounding the islands are an impressive sight. In 2000, Gili Eco Trust, a non-profit organisation, was established as a cooperative venture by locals and dive businesses, to help protect the reefs and educate the public.
Other projects have been set up to improve waste management, protect coastlines against erosion, and look after wildlife. Visitors not only benefit from these efforts but are invited to make their own contribution—by volunteering for beach clean-ups or litter collection.

It’s no surprise the major drawcard for visitors to the Gilis is the ocean. There are opportunities everywhere for snorkelling, free diving, scuba diving, kayaking or paddle boarding. Have you ever tried subwinging? You’re towed behind a boat and, by holding on to a wing-like device, you can dive, glide, twist and tumble below the surface. It’s like flying underwater.
Escape from the Everyday
The closest airport to the Gilis is Lombok International Airport (LOP). For travelling between the islands there are motorised boats and speedboats.
Once you arrive, the first thing you’ll notice is that there are no motorised vehicles. Transportation is by bicycle (visitors can rent them) and cidomo (a small horse-drawn carriage). Of course, you can easily visit many of the attractions on foot as the islands are small and relatively flat.
You might see your island break as the ideal opportunity to slow down and pamper yourself. The Gilis have that covered, too. You’ll find plenty of spa resorts and yoga classes to help you soothe and smooth away the stresses and strains of normal life.
Meet the Three Gilis
There are lots of ‘small islands’ around Lombok but ‘the Gilis’ usually refers to the three main ones.
Gili Trawangan
This is the largest of the Gilis and the farthest from Lombok. It’s usually referred to as ‘Gili T’. It has roughly 1,500 residents and has seen more tourism-related development than the other islands. Most of the settlement, visitors’ facilities and leisure activities are in the eastern section of the island.
Gili Trawangan means ‘island of tunnels’, and the name dates from an interesting period in the Gilis’ history. During WWII, Japanese forces occupied Gili T for a short while and dug caves and tunnels there. They used the highest point in the south of the island as a lookout and a mounting base for anti-aircraft weapons. The tunnels have been filled in but you can still see the remains of a bunker.
@karolatakesphotos
These days, you might hear Gili T referred to as ‘the party island’ and although there’s plenty of nightlife, music and beach gatherings, the island has a lot more to offer.
There’s a range of accommodation options—from hotels and spa resorts to private villas and beachfront huts— which attract a wide range of visitors from around the world.
You’ll find stalls selling local food and produce, stylish shops and restaurants for all budgets. Every evening, in the square near the boat pier, you can browse the busy night market. It’s a perfect way to sample the local cuisine; the seafood is a must.
Like the other islands, Gili T has beautiful white beaches and clear sparkling sea and a whole range of water sports. Scuba diving, surfing and snorkelling (on the northeast coast) are particularly popular.
Gili Air
This is the ‘middle sized’ island and the closest to Lombok. With about 1,800 inhabitants, it has the highest density of local populations. The ‘air’ in its name translates to ‘water’, in English, which people find surprising. It refers to the fact that Gili Air is the only one of the three to have underground supplies of fresh water. The other islands are supplied by undersea pipelines from Lombok.
Gili Air offers every kind of water sport and there’s great diving off the southern and eastern coasts. There’s plenty of shopping and nightlife and places to enjoy delicious local dishes and superb European cuisine. It’s a particularly attractive destination for families and those looking for beachside relaxation and life in the slightly slower lane.
The views are stunning. Look east to see Lombok and the slopes of Mount Rinjani or, to the west, glimpse Bali and its volcano, Mount Agung.
The range of accommodation, from simple homestays to luxury villas, spa resorts or yoga retreats, means you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.
Gili Meno
With only 400 local residents, Gilo Meno is the smallest and least developed of the Gilis and lies between Gili T and Gili Air.
For visitors there’s accommodation in boutique resorts and beachside bungalows, or perhaps you’d prefer some luxury ‘glamping’. You can relax among coconut trees on white sand beaches that are perfect for picnicking and sunbathing, or try snorkelling and diving in sparkling clear waters, with coral reefs and many species of fish. Some people claim Gili Meno’s beaches are the most beautiful of all the Gilis.
For those who want peace and quiet and no crowds, Gili Meno offers a tranquil experience. Think visits to the turtle sanctuary or the underwater sculpture installation – ‘Nest’ by Jason deCaires Taylor. And what better than a ride on horseback along the beach as the sun goes down?
And if you’re thinking romance… yes, Gili Meno has been called the ‘honeymoon island’.
The Gilis are the epitome of the beach escape. Look out for more in the series Get To Know The Gilis in the next edition.

Compared to the steady stream of public islandhopping snorkelling trips, Utopia offers a more relaxed, elevated cruising experience.
The catamaran itself was crafted by a renowned naval architect, known for turning dreams into reality. It is 18 meters long, 8 meters wide, and 4 meters high with 160 m2 of decking spread across two levels. It was built using a blend of wood and resin making the vessel as stunning as it is durable. The boat was constructed in Sulawesi and whilst being constructed it became a local attraction. The process took a full year and in 2022 the first Utopia was launched.

BASK BEACH CLUB, GILI MENO
A Multitude of Stylish Poolside Experiences at the Beach Club that Has Everything
Gili Meno’s BASK has shown it is not like your average island resort – it’s an experience beyond the norm and the same can be said for the BASK Beach Club. Lombok has for sure developed an exciting beach club scene in recent years, but few can match the scale of personalized experiences available at BASK. Beachfront dining, cocktails and comfy daybeds are pretty much standard features at many modern beach clubs but at BASK you get a whole lot more.
It features an open-plan kitchen and expansive restaurant that provides a wide range of different vibes, be it chilling out in a cabana or sipping cocktails in a private lounge. The layered poolside terrace and beach bar serve up a lineup of entertainment while couples can enjoy private dining spaces or a candlelit dinner on the sand.
The standout at BASK is ‘Rosalee’ an underground speakeasy style cocktail bar that looks into the 40-metre infinity pool from below the water’s surface. This is the place to indulge with fine wines and cocktails to a chilled soundtrack of jazz, funk, and soul. What’s smore, for an extra exclusive experience, there is a private lounge room for up to 10 guests.
In fact, there are intimate nooks, private seating and exclusive VIP lounge areas throughout the beach club. For utmost privacy and elevated service gather with friends in one of the VIP lounges or take the luxury level up a few more notches in the VVIP area, for an elevated red carpet service befitting an A-lister. For poolside chilling, recline on a plush day bed or unwind in a cabana with a refreshing cocktail in hand. They are available for up to six guests.
Food is always at the forefront at BASK. The restaurant lounge offers a variety of culinary experiences, from upscale a la carte to the premium WINE AND STEAK experience on the Parilla grill. This is a culinary showpiece of premium dry-aged Australian beef grilled over rambutan and coffee wood with a wide selection of fine wines to pair it with.
The restaurant’s open kitchen serves up an array of sushi and raw dishes like the Chicken Karage Roll and Wagyu Beef Carpaccio. There is sharable tapas and snacks available throughout the day, plus pasta and good old comfort food like burgers and gourmet sandwiches. The signature steak selection is a must for premium grilled meat lovers, while there are abundant options for vegetarians too.
For a more intimate ambience, BASK has an exclusive space for private dining for groups of up to eight guests or dine on the beach just steps from the gently lapping waves.
FROM SEA TO SEAT
Sustainable Spearfishing
Alex Koch is a professional videographer. His recent video From Sea To Seat takes viewers into the world of spearfishing around Gili Air, one of the three Gili Islands off the north-west coast of Lombok. Using his own experiences and those of two other men who, like him, arrived relatively recently in Gili Air, he tells the story of how they have found a connection through spearfishing. Alex shows how spearfishing is not only a sporting pursuit but one with a practical purpose: to provide food for local restaurants.
Just as importantly, though, this process of bringing fish from ‘sea to seat (in a restaurant)’ is a story of sustainability. Alex is originally from Germany. He had been travelling for several years before arriving on Gili Air, to take a short break. As soon as he stepped ashore, though, he ‘fell in love’ with the island.
Although he was experienced in traditional fishing, as a newcomer he was intrigued by the locals’ fishing methods. ‘On my very first day fishing on Gili Air, I was standing by the harbour trying to fish but I’d had no luck! Then a local, Puriman, arrived. He’d been out fishing and caught loads, so I got talking to him and he invited me to go out on one of his boats.’
Coming back to Gili in November 2024, Alex was soon introduced to spearfishing. He was an instant convert; it became an important part of his life.
That’s how he met Senol.
‘I went spearfishing with him and he taught me a lot.’
Building a new life on Gili Air
Senol Dursan, who comes from Turkey, is a highly proficient spearfisher, with more than 30 years’
experience. He made his living selling freediving and spearfishing equipment online, also producing travel and diving content for his YouTube channel.
‘My passion for the ocean was my profession and my lifestyle,’ he says. ‘One of the most inspiring people I met was my late friend, Dejan Sverko. He spent most of the year exploring the remote islands of Indonesia, capturing breathtaking diving and spearfishing footage. Our paths crossed four years ago when he visited Turkey. We spent a month together, diving and travelling. He made Indonesia sound almost like paradise.’
Tragically, Dejan died, months after being diagnosed with brain cancer. His legacy lives on in dozens of incredible videos on his YouTube channel, which continue to inspire ocean lovers.
Senol felt an irresistible pull towards Indonesia. After a short stay in Bali, he wasn’t ‘captivated’ but ‘The moment I set foot on Gili Air, two and a half years ago,’ he says, ‘I felt as if I had entered another dimension—one filled with peace and tranquility.’
He met a group of local spearfishermen and spent days diving with them, sharing stories and exchanging experiences.
‘They taught me about their deep connection to the ocean; I shared insights from my life in the business world. It was during these conversations that the seeds of something bigger were planted—the idea of spearfishing and fishing tours in the Gili Islands.
‘I partnered with Jamal to establish Gili Fishing Games. With our 9.5-meter Pescador boat, we also began organising fishing and spearfishing trips.’
They pursue the larger, more aggressive species—the powerful Spanish mackerel, giant trevally, and dogtooth tuna. These fish present a greater challenge and reward. Senol emphasises the importance of choice: choosing larger fish that are fully grown; choosing only fish that will be eaten. He sees this as ‘fairer’ and more sustainable than randomly baiting hooks and catching fish that won’t be used.
Senol’s friends, Sandi and Muding, have opened the SALFA STORE in Gili Air. It offers spearfishing and snorkelling tours as well as diving equipment. Tourists can experience spearfishing, with instruction and equipment provided, as well as refreshments and a fish BBQ afterwards.
What’s so special about spearfishing?
Spearfishing is a form of freediving where you hunt with a single breath. Senol believes it’s more ethical than other forms of fishing. Spearfishers must dive into the natural environment of their prey. They make conscious decisions to target mature fish that have already contributed to the ecosystem. The catches also directly support the livelihood of local people.
Spearfishing also creates employment, allows an exchange of ideas and encourages skill-sharing.
For Alex, one of the main purposes of making the video From Sea To Seat was to show the sustainability of spearfishing. The local fish they catch go directly to restaurants.
‘Yanai Gili Air is a newly opened Japanese sushi restaurant that uses local fish,’ says Alex. ‘In the film, I wanted to show people how fishing sustainably is possible. You have a basic product—a fish—but something special can be made from it. That’s Angel’s role.’
Sustainable seafood dining
Angel Gil is originally from Spain. In Madrid he had found his passion for cooking. He also spent three months studying at the Tokyo Sushi Academy.
He arrived on Gili Air two and a half years ago, looking for a change of lifestyle for his family. He was head chef
at a beachside restaurant but a few months later, after his wife opened Poke Bowl on Gili Air, he decided to open a restaurant of his own.
‘I love cooking and I didn’t want to open a Spanish restaurant,’ says Angel. ‘I love Japanese food; it’s more about the technique. Contemporary sushi was my choice. I like to keep it simple and very traditional. I don’t do any fancy rolls.
‘We have two open kitchens—a hot kitchen, for ramen and katsu, and a sushi kitchen—so I can be outside with the customers but still be able to see what’s going on inside. I always explain to the chefs what we’re doing and we learn together.’
‘Once, when I caught a fish and tried to cook it, the taste was so strong we couldn’t eat it,’ says Alex. ‘When we caught the same type of fish again, I asked Angel how to cook it and he decided to dry age it. It was exquisite!’ For Angel, too, sustainability is important. He tries to apply it to all aspects of his work in the restaurant. For example, he finds a use for every part of the fish the local fishermen bring him.
And, rather than make specific demands for fish that might not be available, and risk wasting time and resources pursuing them, he respects local supply and the seasons when they are plentiful and at their best.
He sees this as part of his role: educating customers to accept this sustainable approach to providing fish for the table.

SAVING SEA TURTLES IN PARADISE
Meet the Women behind Gili Trawangan’s Turtle Patrol
Nestled in Lombok’s stunning Gili Islands, the island of Gili Trawangan is more than just a destination for turquoise waters, beach bars, and world-class diving. It’s also home to Proyek Penyu, a grassroots sea turtle conservation initiative driven by a passionate local team, supported by the Gili Eco Trust.
This project is dedicated to protecting the endangered sea turtles that grace Gili Trawangan’s waters and beaches year-round. Through education, community outreach, and practical conservation, Proyek Penyu aims to ensure that tourists, divers and snorkelers can continue to enjoy magical encounters with these endangered species.
A Local Team with a Personal Mission
At the heart of the project is a group of inspiring female turtle rangers from Gili Trawangan. Having grown up on the island, their lives have been closely intertwined with the sea and the turtles that call it home. Many of these women have fond childhood memories of swimming alongside turtles and watching them nest on the beaches. Today, they’ve come together with a shared goal: to protect that natural heritage.
Almost every evening in the nesting season (March to September), the team responds to turtle call-outs all over the island. Whether it’s a female turtle nesting or a clutch of hatchlings emerging under the stars, they’re on hand to keep both turtles and people safe. With their help, visitors can witness these unforgettable natural events in an ethical and low-impact way, without distressing the animals or disrupting the nesting process.
Their presence ensures that the beaches remain a safe place for turtles to return, year after year. At the same
time, tourists have a chance to experience one of nature’s most magical spectacles—something that can inspire a lifelong appreciation for wildlife and conservation.
Why Proyek Penyu Began
The Gili Islands are one of the few places in Indonesia where visitors can encounter sea turtles year-round, including the endangered Green turtle and the critically endangered Hawksbill. Unfortunately, the very popularity of the islands could also threaten the turtles’ survival.
Unregulated beach development, loud nightlife near nesting areas, and a lack of awareness among beachfront businesses have made it harder for turtles to find safe places to lay their eggs. Some nests are laid too close to the tide line and risk being washed away, while others are located in high-traffic tourist zones surrounded by bean bags, sun loungers, and shops, leaving floodlights on 24/7. If left unchecked, these pressures could lead to a sharp decline in nesting turtles and ultimately impact the health of local marine ecosystems and the sustainability of Gili tourism itself.
Headstarting Controversy in Indonesia
One of the key issues Proyek Penyu aims to raise awareness of is the rise of poorly managed “headstarting” programs across Indonesia. These projects keep baby turtles in tanks for months or even years before releasing them—an approach that in recent years has been criticised internationally. Hatchlings raised in captivity may fail to develop crucial survival skills like breath holding for deep diving, foraging techniques and predator awareness. While this method has been supported by Indonesian authorities since the 1990s, many countries have since moved away from it due to a lack of evidence of success.
Worryingly, many of these turtle farms now market themselves as sanctuaries, charging tourists to release turtles that are raised in artificial conditions. Proyek Penyu takes an ethical stance against this practice, advocating instead for natural hatching and immediate release—a method more in line with global conservation best practices.
A Breakthrough Year for Turtle Nesting
In 2025, Gili Trawangan has experienced an unprecedented nesting season, with over 42 nests recorded from February to May, a hopeful sign for conservation! However, many of these nests have been laid in vulnerable locations, prompting the team to begin fundraising for a community hatchery. This protected space would allow them to safely relocate at-risk nests and improve hatchling survival rates, especially in areas heavily impacted by tourism infrastructure.
Even more exciting, the past five years have seen a rise in nests of Olive Ridley turtles—a rare and elusive species in these waters. Their appearance underscores the importance of maintaining safe, natural beaches that support all turtle species.
How Visitors Can Help
Conservation on Gili T is a community effort, and visitors are welcome to get involved. You can support Proyek Penyu by donating, spreading awareness and following the social media progress, or purchasing locally crafted turtle souvenirs like T-shirts and keychains at the Gili Eco Trust eco shop. Every contribution helps fund patrols, educational outreach, and future plans for a turtle hatchery.
As you soak in the sunsets with a Bintang, dive the coral reefs, or dance under the stars, remember that just beneath the surface lies a delicate balance. With your help, Gili Trawangan can remain not just a paradise for people, but a sanctuary for turtles too.

The Gili Reef Guardians
Gili Air’s
Next Generation Steps Up to Protect Their Island:
The Gili Reef Guardians Launch Coral Restoration Initiative
In the heart of the Gili Islands, a powerful movement is taking root—not led by adults or outside NGOs, but by the children of Gili Air themselves. The Gili Reef Guardians, a youth-led environmental initiative in partnership with Gili Eco Trust from Gili Trawangan, has just launched its first coral restoration project, planting their very first Biorock reef structure off the coast of their island.
A Biorock is an innovative method of coral restoration that uses low-voltage electricity to stimulate coral growth on metal structures submerged underwater. These structures not only regenerate coral reefs but also create natural breakwaters, helping to protect the island from erosion, rising tides, and future storms.
The dream of these young ocean stewards? To build a full underwater coral wall—a living, breathing reef that produces oxygen, shelters marine life, and safeguards the coastline for generations to come.
To support the cause, the Gili Reef Guardians offer eco water activities including snorkeling, scuba diving, and paddleboarding, in collaboration with Blue Marine Dive Gili Air. Proceeds go directly to their coral planting efforts and environmental education projects.
In addition, local businesses like Flow and Slow are actively raising funds through events, channeling proceeds via the Soraya Foundation, which allocates resources transparently toward projects like plastic pollution, education, tree planting, and coral restoration (let’s plant underwater!).
The initiative doesn’t stop at the shoreline. A second project, in partnership with Hello Eco Games, empowers local youth with knowledge and decision-making. Through an engaging educational board game about plastic pollution, children not only learn but lead. The 14-yearold project managers will be trained as facilitators to host school tournaments—where the prize isn’t just knowledge, but a real budget to allocate toward tangible island protection efforts. From concept to execution, these kids will own their impact.
This is more than an environmental initiative—it’s a local legacy in the making.
Follow their journey and donate online via Instagram: @GiliReefGuardians.

The resort is situated in a tranquil corner of Gili Air yet it is within easy reach of beaches, bars and restaurants. Its location just minutes away on foot to Sunset Beach makes it a popular spot to stay on this side of the island. It’s also just 10 minutes away from snorkeling with turtles.

Investing in Paradise: A Sustainable Approach to Real Estate on the Gili Islands
BY DESVANN VAN VUUREN, CEO AND FOUNDER OF PALM VIEW PROPERTIES
The Gili Islands are more than just idyllic escapes; they are a unique opportunity for sustainable investment. As the CEO and Founder of Palm View Properties, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of the Gili Islands, particularly Gili Air. This enchanting destination has evolved into what many are now calling the “family island,” attracting a wave of investors who are not just seeking financial returns, but a lifestyle change that embraces the serene beauty and rich cultural tapestry of the island. The allure of Gili Air lies in its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and a community that welcomes change while holding onto its traditions. As investment pours in, it is crucial for prospective investors to approach this opportunity with an open mind and a teachable spirit. Respecting the island, its locals, and their diverse cultures is not just a moral obligation; it is the foundation upon which sustainable and prosperous investment can be built.
Legal compliance is another cornerstone of establishing a business in Gili Air. Navigating the regulatory landscape can be complex, but it is essential for ensuring that investments contribute positively to the community and environment. As investors, we must commit to aligning our business practices with local laws, thereby fostering goodwill and respect between newcomers and the island’s residents. This compliance not only protects our investments but also enhances the quality of life for the local community. At Palm View Properties, we understand the challenges and opportunities that come with investing in this unique environment. Our team is dedicated to guiding investors through every step of their journey, from identifying suitable properties to navigating the legalities of establishing a business. We pride ourselves on our
extensive local knowledge and connections, ensuring that our clients are well-prepared to make informed decisions. Furthermore, we are advocates for sustainable development. Our mission is to promote investment that not only yields financial returns but also nurtures the island’s natural resources and supports its communities. We believe that sustainable practices can coexist with profitable ventures, creating a harmonious balance that benefits everyone involved. For those intrigued by the investment potential of Gili Air and eager to explore what Palm View Properties can offer, I encourage you to reach out. Together, we can embark on a journey that respects the island’s heritage while paving the way for a prosperous future.
A Finite Paradise The allure of the Gili Islands lies in their unspoiled beauty and limited expanse. As we venture into real estate development, it's crucial to remember that these islands are finite. Our responsibility is to develop sustainably, cutting fewer trees and building around natural landscapes to maintain the ecological balance. This approach not only preserves the environment but also enhances the unique charm that attracts people to the Gili Islands.
Cultural Respect and Understanding Investing in the Gili Islands requires more than financial commitment; it demands an open mind and a willingness to embrace the local culture. Understanding and respecting the islanders’ way of life, their religion, and the daily challenges posed by tropical island living is essential. This cultural immersion enriches the investment experience and builds bridges between investors and the local community. Adhering to Regulations the path to successful investment
in Indonesia must be paved with integrity and adherence to the law. Investors must follow the rules and regulations set by the Investment Coordinating Board of Indonesia (BKPM). These guidelines are not mere formalities; they are essential for ensuring that business is conducted correctly and ethically. Cutting corners to save money might seem tempting, but it often leads to long-term consequences that can undermine your investment.
Empowering the Future At Palm View Properties, we are committed to guiding our clients toward making informed, ethical decisions. Our services extend beyond property sales to include legal assistance, investment advice, and cultural orientation. We believe that a well-informed investor is an empowered one, capable of contributing positively to the islands' future. Sustainable Growth
The Gili Islands' real estate market is poised for growth, but it must be sustainable. By prioritizing eco-friendly development and cultural integration, we can ensure that this paradise remains a haven for future generations. Investing in the Gili Islands is not just about acquiring property; it's about becoming part of a community that values preservation, respect, and responsible growth.
In conclusion, the Gili Islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty and investment potential. As we continue to innovate and expand, I invite you to join us on this journey toward a sustainable and culturally enriched future. Together, we can build a legacy that honors both the land and its people. Let’s work together to unlock the potential of Gili Air, creating a legacy that honors its beauty and culture. Contact us today to discover how we can assist you in making a positive impact while reaping the rewards of your investment.

Debris Free Friday: Clean the Beach, Grab a Beer, Help Save the Planet
Every Friday on Gili Trawangan, locals, backpackers, divers and staff come together for a unique island tradition: Debris Free Friday. This weekly beach clean movement invites anyone with a spare hour and a passion for the ocean to join forces and give back to paradise—one plastic bottle at a time.
Launched in 2013, Debris Free Friday has evolved into a powerful community initiative, removing more than 70,000 kilograms of litter from the Gili beaches over the past decade. The waste recovered ranges from ocean-borne plastic waste to carelessly discarded rubbish, all of which threatens the beauty, wildlife and tourism of the Gili Islands.
Each week, a different beachside business plays host, sponsoring the event with support and often a cold reward! After the cleanup, volunteers are treated to a free beer to celebrate a Plastic Free Paradise. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the sunset, relax with new friends, and feel good about making a positive environmental impact.
But Debris Free Friday is more than just picking up trash. It’s a chance to learn simple hacks for plasticfree travel, discover how waste is (or isn’t) managed on small Indonesian islands, and understand what part you can play in keeping our oceans clean. It’s also a great way to meet like-minded people, share stories, and connect with a growing network of ecoconscious adventurers.
Want to get involved? Just check out Debris Free Friday on Instagram or Facebook to see where we will be meeting this week to clean up. No sign-up, no fee—just show up, grab a bag, and become part of the solution.

THIS IS THE GILIS!
GETTING THERE
From/to Lombok: There are public outrigger boats from each island direct to Lombok throughout the day starting around 7.00am. A faster (more expensive) option is the hourly speedboat service stopping at all three islands.
GETTING AROUND ON THE ISLANDS
Refreshingly all forms of motorized transport are forbidden on the Gilis. That leaves travel by “Cidomo” horse cart, bicycles or let those feet do the walking. All three islands can be circumnavigated on foot within about two hours. There are numerous bicycle rental kiosks along the beachfront on all three islands—both traditional bikes and increasingly, e-bikes.
ISLAND HOPPING
A scheduled twice a day island hopping service by outrigger boat runs between all three islands in the morning and afternoon, meaning you can visit another island for several hours and return in the late afternoon. A more flexible option is the hourly speedboat service to and from the Lombok mainland which connects Gili Trawangan, Gili Mano and Gili Air throughout the day.
MONEY MATTERS
There are money changers and a wealth of ATM machines situated on each islands’ main beach strip. All accept Mastercard and Visa withdrawals.
POWER
Electricity coverage is 24/7 but power outages are not uncommon. The good news is they are generally brief and many hotels and restaurants have a back up generator. Power outlets use two-pin plugs. International plug adapters are available for sale. Free wi-fi is available at many hotels, guest houses and restaurants.
HEALTH
Each island has health clinics able to treat minor ailments and illness, and you’ll find pharmacies for most over the counter medicines. For dental work or more serious injuries, you’ll need to go to the Lombok mainland.
STAYING SAFE
Even just metres from the shore, currents can be sudden and strong. Know your limits when swimming or snorkeling. Never attempt to swim between the islands.
BE A RESPONSIBLE VISITOR
There are many ways each visitor can do their bit to help keep the Gili Islands as pristine as possible. Conserve water where possible and turn off unnecessary power when leaving your hotel room, such as fan, lights s and air conditioning. Don’t litter streets or the beach —use the trash bins and when shopping, use a reusable bag. There are many ways you can get involved to help keep the Gilis clean, such as weekly beach cleanups where all are welcome.
