ALWAYS

On Your Side

Welcome to the 2nd issue of Mylo Draven Digital Magazine. So excited to have you back, or for the first time. Either way, I am confident you will enjoy the content. As I sit and write this letter, I have only been back home in Texas for a couple of days from a visit to Southern California. I went to spend time with mom. We hadn’t seen each other in 8 months. I am the only child to a single parent, and we are VERY close. I didn’t realize just how long it had been until I booked the flight/hotel for the surprise trip. Her tears of joy when she saw me, and her bear hug fed my heart and soul. I am not one who likes to fly. Flying during the COVID-19 pandemic had me worried. I couldn’t gauge which airlines were keeping the middle seat vacant, and which were not. It was immediately noticeable when looking to book a flight reservation that air travel availability has been reduced. I was surprised at the size of the crowds in the airports. There was no Social Distancing while waiting to board the plane. I was surprised by the 90% full flight out, and the 100% sold out flight for my return. Regardless I made the trips to and from safely, and I thankfully remain free of COVID-19. Did I wear a mask? Abso-fucking-lutely! Masks are my new go-to accessory. I wear one a day, and then wash them all on the weekend. I was ASTONISHED by how desolate and post-apocalyptic the streets and freeways were wherever mom and I went, and whenever we traveled. There was hardly any retail open/available. There was no dining inside restaurants. The amount of forever closed businesses was staggering and sad. Thank you, sweet Baby Jesus, hungry in a manger for DoorDash. The beautiful Pasadena Hilton, where I stayed, didn’t have room service or in-hotel dining. The hotel did however provide hazmat suits for their maid staff. The only reason for me to travel to Southern California was for quality time with my mom, and it was just what we both needed. We got much needed quality time for 3 glorious days. It felt like pre-pandemic good times as we laughed, shopped (very little), gossiped, and watched movies together. In this time of selfquarantining many families are split up. There are generational issues, not just geographical ones to consider. Not being able to visit someone in the same city is just as bad as having someone living in another state or country. Shelter-in-Home day in, and day out creates such a distance. It also exerts an exacting emotional toll for many. The Groundhog Day type effect of all days blurring into one is not only disorienting but disheartening as well. The silent sufferers during this unprecedented time are those who battle Mental Illness. I am one the many millions of people worldwide who live with depression. I will get into that more later in this issue in Mylo Musings: the new monthly space in MDDM where I share who knows what to hopefully enlighten and embolden our readers. As I sign off here, I want to encourage all of you to pick up your phone and make a call, send a text, schedule a group ZOOM with friends and family just to bridge the emotional and physical distance. Please know that the people you are least likely to think are struggling, are battling an inner war for a sustainable and attainable positive, stable mindset. Share your affection and be kind, especially now as this Pandemic lingers on. Remember if no one else tells you, I am on your side.

September fASHION wEEKs

Your Guide to 2020 Fashion During a Fashion Matters diversity discussion, hosted in July by Camille Charriere, there were calls to “make shows more accessible and deconstruct elitism in fashion.” The up-side of the up-ended fashion industry this year is that it may have done just that. September will prove to be a month of surprises, kicking off with the Pitti Immagine Uomo 98, one of the most significant menswear events of the year. Dolce & Gabana will be showcasing their collection in the Alta Moda events in Florence, Italy, September 2nd-3rd. Pitti Immagine will be launching Pitti Connect, an online platform set to better serve those wishing to enjoy the events online. A compressed New York Fashion Week will follow, spanning September 14th-16th. NYFW may also expand to the 17th, depending on demand, and will be a virtual-only event. Several designers (notably Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors) will not be adhering to traditional CFDA calendars and will instead be hosting individual shows. Kors, in particular, is one to watch for October events. Taking the year in stride, London Fashion Week will offer a full week of shows online beginning at 5 pm on September 17th, and running through the 22nd. A gender-neutral showcase this year, the LFW designers also have a few tricks up their sleeves. Burberry, for example, will be hosting their Spring/Summer 2021 collection in the British countryside for the ultimate transporting experience. MYLO DRAVEN DIGITAL MAGAZINE

Following closely on the heels of LFW, Camera Moda has confirmed that Milan’s Digital Fashion Week will run September 23-28th with 28 fashion houses presenting live shows and 24 participating digitally. Happy to return to the stage are Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Max More, Prada, and Versace. Dolce & Gabana and Etro will also be returning after hosting some of the only live menswear shows this summer. Gucci and linchpin designers Jil Sanders and Bottega Veneta have decided against following the calendar and will be showing their Spring/Summer 2021 collections later in the year. Culminating in a spectacular display, Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode has given the go-ahead for a hybrid Paris Fashion Week Online show. (If you haven’t caught the creative recap of the menswear looks displayed in the Show-in-a-Box, check out Jonathon Anderson’s video here.) Running September 28th-October 6th, designers like Louis Vuitton, OffWhite, Hermès, Chanel, and Givenchy are slated to give electric showcases. Saint Laurent has decided to bow out for this week-long event. For those of you who still need a fashion fix postSeptember, Shanghai’s 14-year-running festival will be on display for your viewing pleasure on October 9th16th, and Seoul will run their showcases on October 14th-20th. And be on the lookout for individual designer showcases throughout the rest of the season.

Boasting an International Airport larger than Manhattan, one of the fastest-growing metro populations in the country and a few sports teams you’ve probably heard of (Ahem, go Mavericks and Cowboys!), it’s safe to say everything actually is bigger in Texas. The rich history of Dallas is dripping with celebrity, enterprise, and lots and lots of food. Welcome to the birthplace of German chocolate cake (no, it’s not actually from Germany), Tex-Mex, and the frozen margarita machine. Part II TH ER Fight Stress and UN Get the Home You Want! So you’re working from home, homeschooling the kids, learning to bake sourdough and … buying a home? Ok, Super-You, we see your stress levels rising. Go see your shrink. Or journal or something. It’s cool. We’ll wait. Ok, boo, you good? Let’s do this! Whether you’ve decided to diversify your income with an investment or you just need to move, here are some tips from the experts for how to buy a home in 2020 without losing (what’s left) of your mind

As with all home purchases, find a mortgage lender you trust FIRST. As we covered in the last issue, a lot has changed in terms of qualification. So make sure you have your papers filed, you’re pre-approved and your ducks in a row before you jump in.

Likewise, get yourself an inspector ASAP. Getting pre-inspections will help you be competitive in an environment where closes are happening fast. (The average time homes spent on the market in DFW via this July report was 47 days. Yikes!) *Bonus: Here are 7 Things to Check Before Buying a Home to make sure your investment is solid! Do them distanced, virtually, or ask your inspector.

MYLO DRAVEN DIGITAL MAGAZINE

This expert tip suggests putting as much as 20% down, as well as increasing your earnest money. That means you may want to look at selling your home first and moving into temporary housing to have as much cash as possible to sway the seller.

TINA JACOBSEN

WORK, LIFE & WELLNESS

INTERVIEW Sometimes our family and friends know us better than we know ourselves. This was true for Tina Jacobsen, an Alaska native and successful Optician, who found herself rethinking her career path after a move to Texas.

Photography: Jason Kindig Words: Ashley Hahn

"My license was in Alaska; I had an office and a partnership there. I was ready to try something new. My husband and one of my best friends from New York kept encouraging me to try real estate. I didn't see it for myself, but they saw it in me. And they were right. Once I got in, I never looked back. I really have a zest for the industry."

“It’s different than I thought it would be. I thought I would work more with relocation. My business actually came from everywhere: investors, home-owners, buyers, sellers. Once I got the experience, I loved working with real estate agents. When I was a real estate agent, Capital Title was definitely my preferred title company. I knew the people, I know the company and I felt that it would be a good transition. And it turned out to be a great fit.” Tina has covered her bases, working through seven years as an agent, six and a half in management and is now in her third year with Capital Title of Texas. She’s collected some stories as well. “I’ve seen a little bit of everything. Once I went to show a home, and there were people sleeping in it. I guess they didn’t get the memo! Another time the key didn’t work in the front door, so I went to try the back door, and I got about halfway across the yard and a big dog rushed out at me. Just open that door slowly … you never know what’s going to come out at you!”

INTERVIEW

She also has some advice for home-buyers hoping to have a smooth closing process. “...Getting documents turned in can relieve a lot of that [stress about financing]. Getting with the right people to walk you through it makes a big difference. Working with professionals that are hands-on make the process easy for you.”

Her favorite ways to maintain her calm include yoga, swimming, being outdoors, and quiet time. “ [Texas is] quite a bit different from Alaska. I like to do the trails. My husband and I also have a motor home so we like to go camping. We both have a love of the earth and outdoors and like to see as much of the country as possible.

When asked how she handles the stress and her work-life balance, Tina gives away three of her secrets: really loving your job, finding a way to be calm and getting outside. “I have personally loved every part of it [my job] and the people here. We only intended to be in Texas about 5 years, but we stayed. We really have a love of the people here. And real estate, once you get in, one thing leads to another. There’s never a dull moment. I’m personally pretty mellow and can take a lot; I tend to be the calm in the storm. I don’t get too worked up. I take things seriously, but I have a calm about me, and that means a lot to me.”

”Final advice?

MYLO DRAVEN DIGITAL MAGAZINE

“I am a firm believer that one of the most important things is a good amount of sleep. It can solve a lot. Sleep and nutrition, getting a good balance there can regulate a lot.” And she encourages others to get outside as well. “Unplug and get out there! It’s a great re-set.”

Be Well

on n io t a s rs s e e v n l on l e C W A l a nt e h n t M i o t w r e b em P n e It doesn’t take a medical professional to tell you that 2020 m r a feels like letting your neighbor’s illegal pet ferret drive a mac C truck through the Grand Bazaar. And if you’re one of the many struggling to make sense of the chaos or if you’re finally realizing it’s time that you take the wheel tend your own mental garden, this one’s for you.

Carmen Pemberton is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in Grapevine, Texas with a deep love of people and passion for self-advocation and living your fullest life. She has an extensive background in family medicine and trauma units that she draws from to provide her patients the fullest picture of their health and wellness plan. Who should I see if I am seeking professional help for my mental health? Carmen humbly maintains that “the rock stars are the LPCs [Licensed Professional Counselors] and the trauma therapists.” As the front line of mental health, they are often the first point of contact for those seeking professional assistance. Licensed Professional Counselors and psychologists can assist with mild to moderate depression and trained professionals will be able to quickly assess if you need further assistance from there. General practitioners may also prescribe some medications for mental wellness. However, Carmen stresses that GPs are over-taxed right now with the COVID crisis and a full mental health assessment many times cannot be completed in the time allotted for appointments.

What if I need medication? Achieving mental health is a holistic journey. Medications, while sometimes needed, are part of an overall wellness plan. In appropriate instances, she gives her patients many ways they can earn their way off medications by taking care of themselves, socializing, exercising, etc. Finding a practitioner with a medical background outside of mental health is also helpful for achieving a full picture of wellness. What if I don’t like my therapist/psychologist/etc.? A champion of self-advocation, she encourages those seeking help to find a professional that they connect with, and that both you and the professional should know within two visits if it is the right fit. If not, speak up. Mental wellness networks are a tight-knit community and compassionate practitioners will happily connect you to the resources you need. But isn’t mental health expensive? Carmen encourages those seeking mental wellness and struggling financially to let your practitioner know. If you are doing the work and are actively trying to improve, many health care professionals will work on a sliding scale with you to set a fee you are both comfortable with. If you are experiencing extreme financial hardship, every county also has a public mental health network that patients can tap into. You may have to fill out a lot of paper work and you might have to wait for an appointment, but she stresses that the professionals working in Texas she has come in contact with are a very good and compassionate team. What would you say to those struggling with all the change of this year? “It’s so important to connect to one another. Connect to the elderly, bring them food, do their laundry. It’s about humility and thinking about others … We should try to do things based on what is best for ourselves, our families and each other first and then politically and financially. All the things we used to do before the pandemic to keep ourselves healthy still apply. For instance, I am using my home gym a lot more and

walking. All those things still apply. Reach out to people, exercise, get out in the sun, having something to pet and someone to love. Now, we have a few things to mitigate and life is about change and even positive change can be uncomfortable. But there’s always a work around. For me personally and for a lot of people acts of kindness can soothe the soul. Think of how much good you are putting out in the universe. It’s just little things and I think we need to get back to thinking about each other and appreciate humanity…If we could just consider other people and for ourselves and our family get back to caring about others the world would be a better place. At our practice we try to practice with hope and love and acceptance and meet people where they are. This has been very triggering for some people I thought I had cured … But we will get past this. This is a snapshot. It’s been very humbling. But I think taking care of ourselves and loving ourselves and each other. That’s where it’s at. It will be a glorious day when I am not needed.”

GEARS

Have you ever just burst into tears? Have you ever wondered why you are numb, and dissociated? Have you ever felt the need/urge to slice your wrists so that you could just bleed to death? Maybe a thought or one hundred about how your life means nothing to anyone? Have you ever lost hope? I have been experiencing thoughts like these and more for 35 years. For me, they are comfortable like a nice pair of Gucci loafers. Welcome to my battle with depression: my mental illness.Imagine ALWAYS KNOWING there is something you cannot see, or touch, but that can at any moment overtake you. I don’t mean a quick moment of surprise, or a chuckle. No, nothing so fleeting. I am referring to an emotional weight that becomes such a burden you enter a prolonged funk. A mental www.mylodraven.com

fog that does not allow any light/positivity in for relief. The weight of which leaves you paralyzed physically and mentally. The twisted part for me, is my relationship with mental illness is my longest relationship. I remember when my ex-husband was diagnosed as a Rapid Cycling Bi-Polar. He sobbed and sobbed. I didn’t understand why? I tried to offer comfort by saying there were medications and avenues for care that would help him to manage his illness. He looked up at me, his beautiful green eyes almost indistinguishable as a result of the red and puffiness caused from the tears, and said, “If I don’t have my mind, then what do I have. I don’t want to be crazy.” My heart broke for him, and I was speechless. I recently had my monthly ZOOM session with Carmen, who is my own personal LIFESAVER, and it was decided that I needed to increase the dosage for my depression medication. Suddenly I began to cry, tears streaming from both eyes. I immediately was taken back 7 years to what my ex had said. I now understood wholeheartedly his fear, his sadness, his panic, and his feeling of defeat. I too don’t want to lose my mind. I too don’t want to be crazy. I don’t want MENTAL ILLNESS TO WIN. Make no mistake, my bout with mental illness has made me a suicide survivor. I have overdosed only to be found by some twist of fate. I have been revived on the floor of my kitchen by an EMT back when I lived in Southern California. I have been ready to slice my wrists when a phone call from a stranger saved my life. I have battled from the darkest depths of despair and depression. I have journeyed past the darkness, through the fog to find warmth in the LIGHT. I have been saved by the grace of God.

MYLO DRAVEN DIGITAL MAGAZINE

"I don’t want MENTAL ILLNESS TO WIN." I am still someone who lives and battles with MENTAL ILLNESS. We all need to be very cognizant of the fact that many people who live with mental illness a battling in a QUIET WAR within their minds and souls. Each one of us needs to remember that MENTAL ILLNESS does not only show its face as a homeless person. The person you think is so funny could be using humor to cope with an IMMENSE SADNESS. Maybe the person you think is so strong and together is in fact fragile as a result of living with MENTAL ILLNESS. The one thing you can do that COSTS NOTHING is to BE KIND. You cannot help someone who is in denial or not ready. I personally have gone off my meds multiple times thinking each time, “I am GR8! I don’t need medication.” Only to come CRASHING to a new low before regaining my footing. Whether you or a family member suffer from some form of MENTAL ILLNESS, know that there are resources to help you. There is no reason for SHAME or FEAR. Overcome your inner saboteur so that you can begin the road to wellness. It is no one’s right to judge! We all need to lean on one another for comfort, strength, compassion, and LOVE. Now more than ever. Remember, I'm always on your side.
